from the
The Holidaze
are Over!
Is it just me? The older I get, the faster time flies by. I
remember ringing in a new year and thinking there was
so much time before the next one – reality check, there
really isn’t that much time. But, as an incurable optimist,
I welcome 2023 with a heart full of hope and wonder. As far as
resolutions go, well, I don’t make any - they are too easy to break,
so instead, I set goals for the year and see how that goes.
If the holiday season has left you a bit fluffy, Delray Beach is
the place to be! Our Village by the Sea is chock full of places to get
in shape and get a jump on everyone’s favorite resolution – lose
weight! Picturesque downtown, Pineapple Grove, and Ocean
Boulevard are great places to walk or run. For a more intense
workout, there are gyms or fitness studios to fit your training style
all around town. Check out our advertisers for New Year deals!
Our City Person to kick off 2023 is Nancy Chanin. Nancy is a
native New Yorker with a philanthropic heart. She serves our
community in many ways, always fighting for diversity, equality,
and inclusion. We need more people like Nancy in the world.
Will you adopt a pet this year? Send a photo of your newest
family member to pets@atlanticavemagazine! Planning on
traveling somewhere? Bring a copy of Atlantic Ave Magazine with
you, take a picture and email it to info@atlanticavemagazine with
the subject line ‘On Vacation with Atlantic Ave’ for a chance to win
our quarterly drawing for a gift card to a restaurant downtown!
We love to hear from our readers!
If everything
around you
seems dark,
look again,
you may be
the light.
Trez Capital STaff members with children from ACCF
On Tuesday, December 6th employees
from Trez Capital volunteered
at ACCF and performed a variety of
tasks around the Center, including
beautifying the playgrounds and decorating
the gym for the holidays.
Calder Alfano, a current Trez Capital
employee, brought along a photo that
was taken about ten years ago when he
was at Boca Raton High School and was a
volunteer at ACCF. He vividly remembers
dressing up as Santa Claus and surprising
the children. In the photo he is posed
with the same teacher, Ms. Tonya, who
remembered him from his visit as a teen.
It was a wonderful full circle moment.
Delray Under $50
Most Fun Small Town, Most Crazy Small Town, Most Small Town that Feels
Like a Big Town. Delray has it all. With a bustling downtown, Pineapple
Grove area, and little nooks and crannies in between, there’s more
to do in Delray now than ever, with events and happenings
spanning from daytime to nighttime. While it can
seem expensive at times, there’s a great
opportunity to enjoy all the City has to offer
without breaking the bank. Here’s what you can
do in Delray Beach in January for $50 or less.
With the beginning of a new year comes new opportunities,
new focuses, and new challenges. But, it’s also a great time
to remember that life is beautiful! January is Celebration
of Life Month and not only is this a great time to enjoy the hopefully
less busy post-holiday season, but also a great time to show yourself
a little attention. If you want to get out and about and enjoy the fresh
air, live music and local sights, look no further than Art & Jazz on the
Avenue. Held Wednesday, January 25 from 6 to 9:30pm, you’re invited
to get groovy in the Grove and thoroughly celebrate the evening
with live music, art installations, wellness activations and vendors.
Not only that, but you’re right in the heart of downtown so pop into
some of our amazing local watering holes and dining spots for dinner
or drinks, or both. This edition of Art & Jazz is held in Pineapple
Grove from Atlantic Avenue to Northeast Third Street. Call friends,
invite the neighbors, or head down there solo, and get to celebrating
life! Visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com or call (561) 243-1077
for more information and event details.
Sorry, liver. We know it was a tough holiday season. Super fun and
tasty and enjoyable, and yes we’re looking forward to doing it
again, but, phew, it was a lot. Now that we’re in the New Year, it’s
about time we focus on orange juice without champagne, and social
events without vats of wine (at least for a little while). January is Get
a Balanced Life Month and is a great time to just balance the alcohol
with, well, less alcohol. But do not fret, mocktails have become the
new cocktails, and there’s plenty options along the Avenue for you to
get your fun fix without the alcohol aftermath. Rocco’s Tacos is your
No.1 go-to destination with their handcrafted selection of zero proof
drinks, which are as delicious as they are gorgeous. Their Mockarita
is made with Zero Ritual Tequila Alternative and house-made sour
mix is all that’s right about the ‘rita. The Mulecumber, made with Classic
Tonic, basil, cucumber, Rocco’s House Sour Mix and ginger beer,
and their Roseberry, made with Classic Tonic, fresh blueberries, rosemary,
agave, and club soda, may or may not have you thinking about
Do you sometimes find that you go about your day on autopilot?
That it’s not a right or a wrong, it’s just a doing or not
doing? Chances are, you’re not the only one. But it’s time to
snap out of it and put some positive value back into your decisions!
January is National Conscience Month and is a great time to check in
with the ol’cranium and show it some positive love. To do so, head
outside of the comfort zone box and go straight to the Delray Beach
Public Library where Yoko Sata Kothari, award-winning classical pia-
nist, will be playing a free (!) and very personal concert for you.
She presents a piano concert of gorgeous music composed in
dedication to special moments – weddings and funerals. Yep,
music celebrating a momentous beginning and music celebrating
a momentous end. The concert program will include piano
works by Wagner, Liszt, Ravel, Chopin, Elgar, and others. Making
appearances on the stages from Tokyo, Japan, to Carnegie
Hall, Yoko Sata Kothari has been enjoying her performing career,
and rightly so. She’s won a handful of awards around the
world and is excited to bring her talent to the Delray community.
The performance is held Sunday, January 29 at 2pm and
registration is required. The Delray Beach Public Library is located
at 100 W. Atlantic Ave. Visit www.delraylibrary.org or call
Heavy dinners with gravy-laden dishes, casseroles galore,
and cookies around every corner. The holidays are
fun, but they definitely leave some fun in the bum, too. If
you’re looking for an easy way to get clean and lighten up your
mealtime calorie count, look no further than your best friend,
Mr. Broth. January is National Soup Month and is a welcome
reminder that soup is good for the soul. Especially when the
weather cools down a degree or two, it’s nice to eat to match
the season. If you want to go super clean but also super tasty,
order the Vegan Ramen from Ramen Lab Eatery. For $16, you’ll
get the pleasure of slurping veggie broth, box choy, cauliflower,
beansprouts, corn, kikurage mushrooms, inari, soft tofu, scallions
and nori. It’s a comforting meal in a bowl, and perfect for
dinner or lunch. For a spicy and meal-worthy soup, Lemongrass
is serving up their Tom Kha Lobster and Shrimp Wonton
Soup. The spicy coconut lemongrass base is joined with wontons,
mushrooms, scallions, and cilantro, and at $15 you might
just want to order two. For more of a traditional yet over-thetop
soup, head to Granger’s Grille and enjoy all that is good in
the soup world with their Four Cheese Bourbon French Onion
Soup, which boasts a house made recipe blended with a hint of
bourbon and topped with four cheeses, for $10. Whatever your
soup pleasure, dive in. Visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com
or call (561) 243-1077 for complete restaurant information.
Hi there, self! I know we really haven’t spent too much
one-on-one time together as of late, in between work
meetings, social parties, and, well, scrolling on my
phone, but I’d like to get back into the swing of things, so how
about a date? Aww, I love you, too. January is Self-Love Month
and if you, like most of us, need to focus on the inner and less
on the outer, don’t fret! It’s all about the fun. Good news for us,
there’s a primo spot for focusing on the fun, right in our backyard:
Silverball Museum! It’s not your average museum, that’s
for sure, because you’re encouraged to touch all the vintage
pinball and arcade games that you can get your hands on. Onehour
admission is $15 but a daily admission is $20 so you can
come and go as you please. Not that you’d want to go anywhere,
with their daily happy hour (Monday through Friday from 12
-7pm with half-priced drinks and $6 food items) and entertainment
every weekend. Bring yourself and some more of your
non-selves (aka friends) and have the time of your life, acting
like a kid again! Silverball Museum is located at 19 N.E. Third
Ave. Visit www.silverballmuseum.com or call (561) 266-3294
Reasons Most People Fail at
Their New Year’s Resolutions
(and How You Can Beat the Odds)
5Who
doesn’t
love getting
a fresh
start?
For many
people,
January is
the perfect
time to
shake off
old vices
and create
some
positive
new habits.
But good intentions don’t always translate into actual change.
By February, the majority of resolution-setters have abandoned
their new goals and fallen back into their old ways.
Why does this happen? There are a number of common reasons
why most people don’t stick to their New Year’s resolutions. If you
make one of these mistakes, you’ll probably find yourself giving up
on your resolutions, too.
1. Not being realistic
Shooting for the moon isn’t always the best strategy. In fact,
sometimes it can prevent you from even getting off the ground. Realistically,
almost no one can learn a new language in six months
or become a runner overnight, but many people make overly-optimistic
resolutions like these every year. If you’re too ambitious
with your New Year’s resolutions, you’ll end up getting burned out
before January is over.
2. Making too many resolutions
Even small resolutions can be hard to keep if you make too
many of them. It’s easy to get overwhelmed if you try to change
more than one or two habits at a time. Besides that, making a
lot of different resolutions is a sign that you haven’t put much
thought into each one, and it’s easy to give up on resolutions that
aren’t meaningful to you.
3. Not setting specific goals
If your resolution is something like “lose weight” or “get better
grades,” you aren’t likely to succeed. Why? Because these goals are
vague and hard to track. Useful goals are specific and measurable
- for instance, “lose 10 pounds by March” or “get an A in calculus.”
COPYRIGHTED
4. Not making a plan
Along with a specific goal, you need a plan. How are you going
to turn your resolutions into reality? Many people fail at keeping
their resolutions because they don’t turn their goals into specific
action steps.
5. Giving up too soon
Perseverance is important for forming any new habit in your life,
but many people throw in the towel on their resolutions as soon as
something goes wrong. It’s important to stay flexible and to avoid
getting discouraged too quickly, even if your resolutions are tougher
to keep than you thought they’d be. Adjusting a goal to be more
realistic is better than giving up on it completely.
How Can You Beat the
Odds and Keep Your
Resolutions?
Failing to keep New Year’s resolutions is very common -
but the good news is that it’s not inevitable. A minority of
people do stick to their resolutions every year, and if you’d
like to be one of them, there are some things you can do to
increase your odds of success.
1. Set only resolutions that
are meaningful TO you.
If you don’t really care about your resolutions, you won’t
stick to them. Avoid choosing this year’s resolutions based
on what you think will impress other people. Instead,
choose goals that you’re deeply invested in.
2. Plan for the long haul.
Many people think of New Year’s resolutions as a quick fix
for the previous year’s problems and bad habits. In reality,
though, it takes time to create lasting changes in your life.
Make your resolutions with the knowledge that you’ll need
to work on them consistently, and adopt the mindset that if
you fall off the wagon, you’ll climb right back on.
3. Take baby STEPS.
Every big achievement is made up of a series of small
action steps. Break your goals down ahead of time, so you
won’t get overwhelmed when the new year rolls around.
When you transform a big resolution into a lot of small, doable
steps, you’ll always know what to do next.
4. Track and celebrate your progress.
One of the best ways to stay on track is to look back at
how far you’ve come. It might be hard to see how your small
victories matter from moment to moment, but over time,
those little wins really add up. Keep a log of all your progress,
and reward yourself for meeting milestones on the
way to your main goal.
The Takeaway
New Year’s resolutions get a bad rap because most people
give up on them after a few weeks. But if you love setting
goals for yourself at the start of the year, don’t give up on
the idea of resolutions just yet. Resolutions can actually be a
very useful tool. By taking the right approach and avoiding
these five common mistakes, you might find it easier than
you expected to keep your resolutions all year long.
Delray Beach Kiwanis Club Launching “On A Roll”
Paper Towel and School Supplies Donation Drive
Club Hopes to Replenish Depleted Paper Goods and
Paper towels, tissues, and other paper
goods go fast at Orchard View Elementary
School in Delray Beach.
School supplies such as pens, pencils, and
crayons also tend to be in short supply this
time of year as students return to school after
the holiday break.
With that in mind, the Delray Beach Kiwanis
Club is launching its “Delray Kiwanis
On A Roll” paper towel and school supply
donation drive this month. They hope to collect
hundreds of rolls of paper towels, boxes
of tissues, and much-needed school supplies
before the month’s end.
“Our club has been supporting Orchard
View Elementary school for many years,”
said Kiwanis Member Peggy Kelleher, chair of
the collection drive, along with club member
Rich Pollack. “In August, our members donated
more than $1,500 worth of school supplies
to the school, and our club later gave another
$250 worth of paper towels, but those
were all gone in a flash.”
To contribute to the drive, those wishing
to give can go to Amazon.com, Walmart.
com, and Costco.com and find Orchard View
Elementary’s wish list, which includes specific
items requested by educators. Supplies
and paper towels can be sent directly to the
school. (See box for detailed information)
“All of us at Orchard View are incredibly
grateful to the Delray Beach Kiwanis,” said
Principal Danielle Garcia. “No matter what
our needs are – whether for the school or our
families – the Kiwanis Club is always there.”
Garcia said the club’s August donation of
school supplies helped ensure that teachers
had the materials they needed.
With most of those supplies now gone,
club members decided to reach out to the
community to help replenish the materials
for the year’s second half.
Kiwanis Club members first understood
the need for paper towels and other paper
products– not usually high on school wish
lists – several years ago when they greeted
students on the first day of school.
“What we saw caught us by surprise,” said
club member Ezra Krieg. “Many of these little
kids were carrying packages of paper towels
that were bigger than they were. We decided
that this was an area where we could help.”
In addition to supporting Orchard View,
the Delray Beach Kiwanis also provides financial
support to the Achievement Centers
for Children and Families, which received a
$2,500 donation of proceeds from the Kiwan-
► The Subtle Art of Not Giving A #@%! (Theaters)
Based on the bestselling self-help phenomenon, The Subtle Art of
Not Giving A #@%! is a cinematic doc designed to help us become
less awful people. The author himself, Mark Manson, cuts through
the crap to offer his not-giving-a-#@%! Philosophy: a dose of raw,
refreshing honesty that shows us how to live more contented,
grounded lives. With over 15 million copies sold, The Subtle Art of
Not Giving A #@%! struck a chord with readers worldwide; now,
its no-bullshit, life-changing advice comes to the screen. Backed
by academic research and scatological jokes, Not Giving A #@%!
shows us that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to
turn lemons into lemonade but on learning to stomach lemons.
The Subtle Art of Not Giving A #@%! doc is directed by filmmaker
Nathan Price,
becomes savagery when it’s discovered that the young man’s heart
has been skillfully removed. Fearing irreparable damage to the
fledgling military academy, its leaders turn to a local detective,
Augustus Landor (Christian Bale), to solve the murder. Stymied by
the cadets’ code of silence, Landor enlists the help of one of their
own to pursue the case, an eccentric cadet with a disdain for the
rigors of the military and a penchant for poetry—a young man by
the name of Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling). The Pale Blue Eye is
Protectors of
the Light
By Ivy Gilbert
The Battle Between Light and Dark is
Never Fully Won.
Darkness lurks in the shadows of the
world, patiently waiting for its opportunity
to emerge and take control. It’s only by protecting
the Light that we keep it at bay.
Hannah has always considered her life
unremarkable, even though she had an
experience that few have. After receiving
a journal sharing the stories of several
women before her, she learns that no matter
how ordinary a person might feel, life
holds a purpose – often more significant
than one could ever imagine
After years of limited communication
with her twin brother, Nick, their lives become
intertwined as they try to solve the
mystery of a lost, ancient artifact. As they
battle with the forces of Darkness, they
again come together and learn of the powerful
bond only twins can share and their
joint calling to protect the Light.
This supernatural mystery shares
knowledge of the universe in its quest to
overcome Dark’s attempt at control.
Good for a Girl
By Lauren Fleshman
Lauren Fleshman has grown up in the
world of running. One of the most decorated
collegiate athletes of all time and a
national champion as a pro, she was a significant
face of women’s running for Nike
before leaving to shake up the industry
with feminist running brand Oiselle and
now coaches elite young female runners.
Every step of the way, she has seen how our
sports systems—initially designed by men,
for men and boys—fail young women and
girls as much as empower them. Female
collegiate athletes routinely fall victim to
injury, eating disorders, or mental health
struggles as they try to force their way past
a natural dip in performance for women
their age. Girls drop out of sports at alarming
rates once they hit puberty.
Long gone are the days when women and
54 | january 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
girls felt lucky to participate; Fleshman and
women everywhere are waking up to the
reality that they’re running, playing, and
competing in a world that wasn’t made for
them. Part memoir, part manifesto, “Good
for a Girl” is Fleshman’s story of falling in
love with running as a girl, being pushed
to her limits and succumbing to devastating
injuries, and daring to fight for a better
way for female athletes. Drawing on
not only her own story but also emerging
research on the physiology and psychology
of young athletes of any gender, Fleshman
gives voice to the often-silent experience of
the female athlete and argues that the time
has come to rebuild our systems of competitive
sport with women at their center.
Written with heart and verve, “Good for
a Girl” is a joyful love letter to the running
life, a raw personal narrative of growth and
change, and a vital call to reimagine sports
for young women.
Spare
By Prince Harry
It was one of the most searing images of
the twentieth century: two young boys,
two princes, walking behind their mother’s
coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and
horror. As Diana, Princess of Wales was laid
to rest, billions wondered what the princes
must be thinking and feeling—and how
their lives would play out from that point on.
For Harry, this is that story at last.
With its raw, unflinching honesty,
“Spare” is a landmark publication full of
insight, revelation, self-examination, and
hard-won wisdom about the eternal power
of love over grief.
The Mitford Affair
by Marie Benedict
From New York Times bestselling author
Marie Benedict comes an explosive
novel of history’s most notorious sisters,
one of whom will have to choose: her country
or her family?
Between the World Wars, the six Mitford
sisters — each more beautiful, brilliant,
and eccentric than the next — dominate the
English political, literary, and social scenes.
Though they’ve weathered scandals before,
the family falls into disarray when Diana
divorces her wealthy husband to marry a
fascist leader, and Unity follows her sister’s
lead all the way to Munich, inciting rumors
that she’s become Hitler’s mistress.
As the Nazis rise in power, novelist Nancy
Mitford grows suspicious of her sisters’
constant visits to Germany and the highranking
fascist company they keep. When
she overhears alarming conversations and
uncovers disquieting documents, Nancy
must make excruciating choices as Great
Britain goes to war with Germany.
Probing the torrid political climate in the
lead-up to World War II and the ways that
seemingly sensible people can be sucked
into radical action, “The Mitford Affair”
follows Nancy’s valiant efforts to stop the
Nazis from taking over Great Britain and
the complicated choices she must make between
the personal and the political.
Commit to Yourself
“New year! New you!” “Out with the old, in with the
new!” “I’m going to the gym and starting a new diet on
January 1!” “I’ll start a new program on Monday.”
Blah, blah, blah...
It’s the same thing every year. Said the same people who start
something “new” every year, only to do it for a few weeks and
quit because of whatever excuse they came up with. Then
they fall back on their old habits. Throughout my career, I have
heard excuses like “If all I could do was workout for a few months
straight and make it my job, I would be in great shape too, like
that model or actor.” Well, guess what? Covid allowed most of you
to do just that, and many of you squandered that opportunity and
actually came out worse on the other side. Why? I have my opinions,
but the fact is humans are inherently lazy. We don’t want to
change, we don’t want to challenge ourselves, and we don’t want
to change our comfy routine. We don’t want to do things that are
hard or hurt after. Our society has become built on us wanting
others to do it for us, and we will pay astronomical amounts of
money to see results from surgery or fad diets rather than doing
the work. Well, it is time to change that.
Do you wait until your car breaks down and has a major blowup
to fix it? No, most of you routinely get your oil changed, tires
rotated, new wipers, filters, etc. So why do we do this to ourselves?
Do we not need maintenance? We do! Our body and mind are built
on the premise of this. Constant repetition and a routine schedule
make people the most productive and healthiest. We yearn for
this consistency as humans. When we put a little bit of effort into
planning, it goes a long way to save time and leads to better results.
Here are five simple steps to take to start with.
1Plan and prep your meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
This saves on average one hour a day in cooking time as
well as dealing with the pesky question “What’s for dinner
honey?” because we all know how that ends up…
2Plan and stick to a 12-week workout plan. That can be a
complex push-pull workout routine or something as simple
as push-ups, crunches, and walking. Whatever it is, move!
3Get bloodwork done and have routine wellness exams
performed. Always question your providers about
medications and ask if they need to be adjusted based
on your bloodwork.
4Start taking care of yourself. Start going to a chiropractor
and get adjusted regularly. If you’re going
to physical therapy, push yourself to get to
the next level of rehab. If you get massages, plan to do
them regularly. Get on a maintenance schedule, so you
don’t break down.
5Think positive! We only get one chance at life;
make it a healthy one.
Jumpin’ Into The New Year!
The holidays are over, and you’re ready to de-fluff and jump back on
the fitness wagon. Like most, you have most likely set some fitness
related New Year Resolution. Here are some tips to ensure these
resolutions are attainable and will work for you. It is all about having
goals and plan! A healthier version of you is just a couple steps away!
1. Make Realistic Resolutions
Set goals that are attainable and realistic. The more
accomplished you feel, the more likely you are
to stay motivated and push toward your goals.
A resolution shouldn’t be a fantasy. Don’t set
yourself up for failure before you begin! If
you’ve never lifted weights, attempting to do
so 7 days per week is probably setting you up
for disappointment. For most people, breaking
or setting new habits doesn’t happen overnight.
The key to sustainable resolutions is to
make small changes gradually. Start training
slowly if your goal is to go from never running
to finishing a half-marathon. Begin by
walking a few miles twice a week, steadily
increasing the workload to jogging, and
then running over several months. Just keep
the word “realistic” in your mind, and you’ll be
off to a good start!
2. Get Specific With Your Goals
Resolutions should be both specific and measurable.
Writing down your goals is a great way to accomplish
them, but your list can also help you figure
out the exact steps needed to get where you want to
go. “I want to lose weight” is a common New Year
resolution, but how exactly do you go from point
A to point B? The vaguer your goals are, the harder
it will be to attain them. Instead, try setting a
more specific goal. For instance: “I want to lose 10
pounds over the next 6 weeks by eliminating fast
food meals and going to the gym 3 to 4 times per
week. I’ll then maintain my goal weight for 6 months
before setting any other new goals.” The more specific
your goal, the better your results will be.
3. Set Non-Superficial Goals
Looking good in a swimsuit is always a good goal, but
it should come secondary to your main goal. Looking good
in a swimsuit is always a good goal, but superficial goals
usually lose their appeal after endless weeks of diet and
58 | january 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
exercise. Instead, try picking a goal related to health and
happiness. For example, regular exercise has awesome
benefits, such as lowering cholesterol, boosting overall
energy, increasing happiness, and decreasing
depression. Bringing deeper intentions to your
workout can make all the difference in sticking to
your goals.
4. Buddy Up
Find a friend or someone with like-minded
goals to keep and hold you accountable. Accountability
is huge! You are much more
likely to stay on track when you have
someone to answer to besides yourself.
A buddy should also serve to motivate
and keep things real. They should have
no problem telling you to put that
French fry down and get your booty
to the gym when you lack motivation.
If your buddy isn’t doing their job,
fire them and find a new one! There
is always someone looking to become
healthy and fit.
5. Reevaluate
Resolutions Often
Many things seem fun from a distance
but might not be a good fit. How many people
resolve to finish a marathon, only to realize
they dislike distance running? Or decide
to take up yoga and realize they want something
faster-paced? If this happens to you,
switch gears and pick a different resolution.
Don’t be afraid to switch it up if it isn’t working.
You’re much more likely to stick with
something that you genuinely enjoy.
Nicole Stott
Interviewed and written by Emily Peters | Photo Courtesy of NASA
In the not-too-distant past, girls who dreamt about working in maledominated
fields were often met with a multitude of unrelenting
obstacles. Thanks to trailblazing astronauts like Nicole Stott, the
skies are no longer the limit for these young women... space is.
Born in Albany, New York, Stott relocated to South Florida before
she could walk, and grew up in close proximity to Cape Canaveral.
“One of my earliest recollections as a child, was watching the
Moon landing at home with my parents.”
The future space explorer was exposed to many facets of the aviation
world at an early age, as her father had a passion for
flying, and spent a lot of time at the local airport building
small airplanes. While visiting her father on site, Stott
was witness to women working on the aircrafts as well,
which was encouraging.
“As a teenager in high school I had a female aviation
teacher, which when I think back was a huge influence,
not really knowing it was happening at the time.”
As she began to express her interest in wanting to
know how planes and rocket ships operated, everyone
lifted up her ambitions, and was never told she couldn’t
achieve her goals, regardless of gender.
Stott set out on a path pursuing a degree from Embry-
Riddle Aeronautical University, eventually moving to
Houston where she earned an instrument rated pilot
license. Securing a job as a NASA engineer at the Kennedy
Space Center in Merritt Island, Florida, would lead
to her position as an astronaut on the Space Shuttle and
International Space Station (ISS).
“I was really drawn to the idea of being an astronaut, because I
had gotten to see how all of the work NASA was doing was ultimately
about improving life on Earth, and that to me was really attractive, in
addition to the adventure side. I spoke to a couple people I considered
to be mentors, and they encouraged me to do the one thing I had
control of in that whole process, which was to fill out the application.”
On August 28, 2009, aboard Discovery STS-128, Stott departed on
her first flight, as the only woman among seven crew members. Prior
to spending 104 days on the ISS, Stott contemplated the work-home
life balance, and was grateful for the opportunity to call home every
day, and video conference once a week.
The rocket
ship
doesn’t
care if
you’re a
boy or girl
“Children always add an extra thought in your head no matter
what. My hope was that we were doing work that would make life
better for my son, who was seven when I flew for the first time. I am
especially thankful to my husband who was supportive every step of
the way. For my first flight I trained for three years, and because it’s
the International Space Station and we have five international
space agencies involved, as crew members we
go to all those places during that time frame. Over fifty
percent of my time was out of the country, which was actually
much more difficult than the three months I spent
away on the space station.”
One of the most exhilarating aspects of Stott’s career
choice was the ability to view our planet from an exclusive
location, while orbiting at speeds of 17,500 mph.
“The first time I saw Earth from space was after
launch on my first mission. I remember floating up to
a window, and being stunned at how overwhelmingly
beautiful it was.... glowing, crystal clear, all the colors
you know Earth to be, against the clearest black I’d ever
seen. In all of that awe however, in the back of my mind I
thought about the fact I was floating on a ship... in space,
and how surreal it was.”
In preparation for the challenges space travel presents,
one of the significant events of Stott’s training program
was living for 18 days in an undersea laboratory.
“The Aquarius habitat sits at about 60 feet under water on the sea
floor off the coast of Key Largo, and is about the size of a school bus.
It is the best analog to flying in space, because at that depth pressure,
you can’t simply swim to the surface or you’ll hurt yourself. If something
goes wrong, you have to know how to deal with it in a relatively
confined space, while always being diligent about the way you behave
in that extreme environment.”
In 2000, Stott was selected as a NASA astronaut candidate, beginning
a two year training cycle whereupon each applicant is evaluated
extensively for advancement opportunity.
COPYRIGHTED
“We were told it would be three to five years before being assigned
to a spaceflight. Sadly in 2003, the Columbia accident happened, and
pushed our wait time up to ten years. In the meantime, you’re working
on NASA projects and focusing on your training.”
Stott put that arduous practice to use, as only the tenth woman to
ever participate in a space walk, and the fifth female crew member to
fly on the International Space Station.
“There’s a lot of things going through your mind as you’re preparing
to open the hatch and ‘walk’ in space. You float out that hatch in
your spacesuit, which provides everything you need to survive... like
you’re in your own little spaceship. Earth is rotating 250 miles below
you, you’re hanging on to the handhold, trying to look around and
take it all in, while able to move effortlessly in three-dimensions. Our
training is fantastic, but nothing can fully prepare you for that.”
Bestowed with the recognition of being the first person to use watercolor
as an expressive medium while in flight, Stott produced a
piece that was displayed in the Smithsonian entitled, “The Wave,” and
served as a catalyst for her life after NASA.
“I brought along a few personal objects with me on my spaceflight,
which included a small watercolor kit. Painting with watercolor in
space, like everything else in space, is pretty surprising. There’s floating
balls of water, and the way the brush and paper behaved was very
different. It seemed to embody what it was like
to live while floating in space.”
After 27 years working within NASA, Stott
harnessed an intense enthusiasm for bettering
the world, along with her passion for painting, to
co-found the Space For Art Foundation.
“I was starting to feel like my experiences
needed to be shared in a unique and meaningful
way. Painting on the space station led me to
spaced- themed art therapy. I worked with kids
at a pediatric cancer center in Houston, and observed
the children being able to picture themselves
someplace outside that hospital. Using
art and the inspiration of space as a therapeutic
tool, it allowed them to transcend what they
were going through and imagine their future.
It was amazing to see, and so we expanded the
program from that point, reaching refugee centers
and orphanages around the world. Kids
very quickly understand their role of working
together, and the connection between personal
health and the health of our planet.”
Many of us watch the Superbowl for the commercials,
and in 2020 Stott appeared in one of
those coveted spots. Oil of Olay created a campaign
entitled, “Make Space for Women,” accompanied
by a monetary pledge benefitting
Girls Who Code. When given the opportunity to
project a positive female presence for the space
program, Stott said the decision was easy.
“I feel very fortunate, because the way NASA
has evolved, sets a wonderful example for how
other industries should act when it comes to diversity
and inclusion.”
Exceptionally accomplished, Stott remembers
not always being extremely confident in every step of her journey,
but remained determined.
“Don’t ever be the one that says no to yourself... the rocket ship does
not care if you’re a boy or girl.”
From inner space as an aquanaut, to outer space and back, Nicole
Stott has explored extraordinary regions of our world, in hopes of designing
a better tomorrow.
“We all live on the same planet and are all Earthlings. The only border
that matters is that thin blue line of atmosphere that blankets and
protects us all.”
In 2021, Stott published a book entitled, Back to Earth, a personal
recount of her time as an astronaut and the eye-opening information
it provided. Stott actively continues to inspire by means of her motivational
speeches, working with children through the Space for Art
Foundation, and promoting empowerment of women in the sciences.
Although all her missions have been completed, part of Stott’s heart
remains in orbit, as there is one box she hasn’t been able to check off
her wish list yet.
“I would still love to walk on the Moon.”
Photofacial IPL Treatments
Photofacial light treatments are a cut above the rest for skin rejuvenation
of all age groups. With Photofacial light treatments, we
can build collagen to reverse the aging process. Additionally, treating
acne, broken blood vessels, and brown spots has never been easier.
Photofacial treatments refer to a group of treatments performed using
a specific machine called the Sciton, which delivers broadband
light (BBL) or intense pulsed light (IPL) at different wavelengths to
target unwanted colors on your skin. These treatments not only reduce
the signs of aging on the superficial layers of the skin, such as
brown spots and broken blood vessels, but they also heat the lower
layer of the skin (the dermis) to encourage collagen production, resulting
in long-lasting anti-aging results for years.
Moxi + BBL
Lighten, brighten and refresh with our newest technology, Moxi!
If you’re looking for a gentle approach to radiant skin, Moxi is the
uneven pigmentation and improving tone and texture. The
best part is that it yields amazing results for all skin types, and is an
excellent option for men, too! Moxi comfortably delivers non-ablative
laser energy to revitalize your skin by correcting the initial signs
of sun damage and aging, regardless of season or skin type. It can
also be combined with BBL for brown and red spots for the ultimate
laser experience resulting in incredible results. Treatment is fast and
easy with little downtime, post-care is simply to stay out of the sun,
and makeup can be applied 24 hours post-treatment.
Secret Microneedling with Radiofrequency
(Secret RF)
Patients love microneedling because they notice that their skin
is brighter, smoother, less wrinkled, and less porous than before.
Secret RF offers the latest technology, which combines both microneedling
and radiofrequency. This radio frequency (RF) fractional
microneedling system delivers tailored energy to improve fine lines,
wrinkles, and scars from the inside out. Secret RF’s microneedles
smoothly penetrate the skin, delivering energy at various depths to
induce collagen regeneration while sparing the skin’s surface. Secret
RF’s unique, customizable features allow us to treat the widest
range of skin concerns and skin types. At Siperstein Dermatology
Group, we also combine Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) with some of our
aesthetic treatments, such as laser resurfacing and microneedling.
By combining PRP’s active growth factors with these procedures, we
can stimulate stem cells to produce more collagen, reduce downtime,
and improve overall skin texture and youthful appearance.
Botox/Dysport
Have all of your Zoom meetings, squinting at computer screens,
and daily stress added a few more lines to your face than you would
like? No problem! Botox and Dysport are an excellent option for
patients interested in reducing wrinkles around the forehead, between
the eyebrows, and around the eyes. These naturally occurring
proteins safely relax the muscles where they are injected. Patients
will keep their natural facial features while reducing the movements
that cause wrinkles. The best part is that the treatment takes only
a few minutes, and the results may last from three to four months!
Fillers
You may have heard of Restylane and Juvederm (injectable
fillers) but may be wondering how these fillers are different from
Botox and Dysport. While Botox and Dysport affect the action
of nerves and muscles, injectable fillers act to add volume to the surrounding
soft tissue. We all naturally lose volume over time, as fat
and bone structure in the face diminishes with age. This loss of volume
can often lead to sagging of the skin, creating the appearance of
jowls or marionette lines. In the last few years, most cosmetic dermatologists
have been using these products to fill superficial lines
around the mouth and for volume restoration. When filler is injected
in the proper place on the cheek, it can lift it up and decrease the
smile lines below. If you fill in front of the ear, it can help lift the corner
of the mouth and smooth the jawline. Hyaluronic acid fillers are
composed of a substance found in normal skin, which our bodies
produce to keep our tissue strong. The improvements can last 4-12
months, depending on the location and placement of the filler.
THE SIlverBALL MUSEUM
Make Everyday a Holiday
By Diane Feen | photos by Ryin Gibbs
To be a grownup is to be responsible. There’s the house,
the kids, a spouse, and a career that usually takes priority.
But did you know that having fun is very important to your health?
Your doctor may be unable
to prescribe this all-encompassing
remedy, but Silverball
Retro Arcade has one for you.
It requires no insurance forms
and no appointment. What they
have is 9,000 square feet of arcade
and boardwalk fun. Add that to
over 200 Retro Pinball machines,
Arcade Games, Skee Ball, Video
games, and table shuffleboard, and
you have a day of sheer joy.
The history of Silverball is one
of legends. Rob Ilvento, owner and
a food manufacturer, was at a convention
with his daughter when
she gravitated towards a pinball
game at the event.
He opened a Silverball Museum
in Asbury Park, NJ., in 2009 and
then one in Delray Beach in 2016.
Recently the name changed from
Silverball Museum to Silverball
Retro Arcade. The rest is history.
Ilventor had the vision, and the people of Delray (and beyond)
came for the fun, games, and the nostalgia of it all to make the vision
come to life. People like Dan Emond found his true passion once
again. “The Silverball Museum is an incredible place. Since my local
pinball spot closed, I’ve had an empty spot in my heart. I visited Silverball
on a work trip, and I couldn’t have been happier. You can’t
beat the value of the all-day pass. The machines are in top condition,
and there are rare gems to enjoy! t It’s an A+ atmosphere and a
much-needed fantastic night of fun after a rough year.”
Emond is right. There aren’t too many places that engage the senses
and allow one to roll back to a time of innocence with so much
unbridled fun.
You don’t have to hoard coins to play; instead, you get an All Day
Pass and a wristband that allows you to play any game all day long. If
you are short on time, you can purchase a shorter pass.
The machines roll all day long, and so does the challenge of beating
Godzilla, the Hobbit, Iron Maiden, or scoring big at Skee Ball.
There are recently added vintage pinball machines from the 30s
or newer ones, like Star Wars, The Mandalorian, or Godzilla. There’s
the Creature from the Blue Lagoon, The Hobbit, and Moral Kombat.
The games never stop (unless it’s past closing time), and the fun
continues as if you didn’t have a care in the world.
But reality has a bit of play here. One does get hungry after all this
fun and games. That’s why Silverball has a cozy retro bar and restaurant.
The food is excellent, and the menu is varied.
They have a great kitchen staff and improved their menu and catering
options. The best part is that Happy Hour starts at noon and
goes on until 7 pm. That means half-price drinks and a $6 menu are
yours for the asking.
“Terry, our Kitchen Manager, is a natural leader and a great men-
tor for all our staff. “Terry and John have really turned the kitchen
into a place of wonder. All the staff is really great. We try to create an
atmosphere that projects that to our guests,” said long-time Manager
Dayna DiDomenico, a staple of Silverball since it opened in 2016.
The all-day menu includes juicy fresh hamburgers, fish and chips,
wings, meatball parmesan appetizers, pizza, nachos, and much more.
There are also cocktails to top off the day or night.
There are 14 TV screens all over the museum and a huge projector
overhead – on the second floor – that broadcasts sporting
events. High above the entire space is a sparkling disco ball that
lightens the mood.
Entertainment takes such a high priority at Silverball that they
now have a DJ on Friday and Saturday from 10 pm to 2 am and a new
dancefloor for you to boogie like it was 1960. Though they can’t turn
back the clock to when it took $12 to fill your gas tank, they can let
you experience the past with as much gusto as you can muster.
That’s why they want to share this exuberance with as many people
as possible. They host corporate events, book parties, milestone
celebrations, and more.
“We have a great fundraising promotion,” said DiDomenico. “You
buy our $20 all-day passes and keep 50% of the profit for your organization.
It’s a no-risk option for school fundraising, clubs, teams,
and non-profits. It’s joyful to give back.”
There are two floors of wizardry and gaming, perfect for a private
party. One has a bar made from a ship with seven flat-screen TVs, air
hockey, pinball machines, and a dance floor.
The other side has vintage tables and chairs, Foosball Table, Vintage
Pinball machines, a Vintage Juke Box, and a signed guitar from
Tom Petty on the wall. Both locations are perfect for fun, celebration,
and team-building.
If you are short-winded or just want to be taken to this palace of
non-stop play, call Silverball, and they’ll pick you up in their Silverball
Golf Cart. Tommy will lift your spirits and let you glide in a comfy cart
with bubbles down the street.
The pinball games are kept in immaculate condition because
there’s a real pinball wizard in the house, Marcel. Some of the newest
machines include Godzilla - Star Wars Mandalorian and Godzilla.
The new games are interactive and have technology that records
your highest score and talks to you. You can track your progress –
and it records your score so you can come back and see if anyone has
beaten you. You can also play their game of the month and fill out a
form at the desk to see if you got the highest score at the end of the
month. The winner gets a free pass.
They also sell nostalgic candy, Silverball Museum T-shirts, sweatshirts,
and accessories. If all you want is food, that’s cool too.
The Silverball Museum is an action-packed place where fun and
games are plentiful, and happiness is the guaranteed outcome.
initially reluctant to move their licenses to a smaller boutique brand.
“Moving my business to Posh Properties is one of the best moves I
have made. My business immediately started to grow my first month.
The personal hands-on approach with their agents and the incredible
reputation Posh Properties has within the community and other
industry peers has proven to be invaluable,” says Anthony.
Always accessible for their customers, Anthony and Paige are available
creating long-lasting friendships with my customers is very rewarding.
I work diligently around the clock and always put my customer’s
needs first. Hard work, transparency, and staying focused on emerging
trends have been essential to my success,” said Paige.
A Florida native with years in the business, Anthony Addeo graduated
from FAU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration
and a major in Management. He grew up managing his family’s investment
properties and closed just shy of 30 transactions in his first
year as a Realtor, for a total of over $10,000,000 in sales volume. His
dedication and work ethic eventually led him to join Posh Properties.
“My greatest achievements stemmed from early in my entrepreneurial
lifestyle. Early on I owned a small business while completing
full time college credits. You adapt quickly when it is sink or swim. It
all taught me how to handle immense workloads and develop critical
thinking skills when the pressure is on. This later transitioned seamlessly
into my real estate business without missing any opportunities,
and most importantly, delivering for every one of my customers,
time and time again,” said Anthony.
Combined, Paige and Anthony come to the table with not only an
incredible work ethic and drive to succeed in the industry but with
their desire to go above and beyond for each of their individual customers.
Anthony specializes in negotiations and strategic pricing,
and Paige with marketing and networking. Along with the team they
have built, which includes Brianna DiPalermo and Mehdi Rachidi,
they focus on all aspects of the transaction. Their goal is to create
an experience that their customers will remember and continue to
work with them and recommend their family and friends. Working
diligently around the clock and always putting their customer’s
needs first, they understand and embrace the required hard work,
transparency, and focus needed on understanding emerging trends,
that have been essential to their combined success.
“We all work well together, and we know every aspect of the transaction.
Building a competent and driven team, allows us to focus on
the customer and insures the transaction is smooth and with little
disruption to the customer’s daily life. We are on the same page, and
we are available 24/7,” said Anthony.
“We want our customers to know that we are available for them,
and we are giving them undivided attention. Our brand reflects that
we are there for our customers. When the process is over, we want
them to say that was easy and that we took the stress away from
them. We finish the process with a great experience and build relationships
that last a lifetime,” said Paige.
The team continues to grow their business and are now investing
in their community by buying and renovating homes together.
“They are building their practice now and will become the real estate
agents to go to for the next 20 years. They have the work ethic of
veteran realtors and get the job done,” said Jerilyn.
Posh Properties continues to excel in the South Florida real estate
market. The boutique firm has a staff of focused and hardworking
agents who truly care about their customers. Posh Properties is
working with builders, selling land and luxury homes.
“Even though it was a tough 2022, agents at Posh Properties were
able to exceed what we did last year by 10 percent,” said Jerilyn.
Anthony and Paige continued, “We really care about our customers.
We fight really hard negotiating for our customers.”
Their customers praise Paige and Anthony for their dedication
and for helping them throughout the real estate transaction.
“Anthony and Paige are real professionals. They are hard-working,
selling my former home and finding me the perfect home to move to.
I appreciated the energy and enthusiasm they put into their work.
They are very responsive whenever I needed them and made me feel
like I was their only client. There was no question they were unable
to answer... I trusted them to do what was in my best interest, and
they always did, whether it was the properties we looked at or the
financial aspects,” said customer Paige P.
“Paige and Anthony are outstanding agents! They helped me buy
a house in a very hot market, as a first-time home buyer, with a special
type of mortgage I wanted to use- all while I was very busy with
work. They kept on top of absolutely everything and advised me well
at every turn. I’m so grateful!” said a happy customer.
THRōW Social ®
The Perfect Place for Fun,
Fantasy, and Friendship
By Diane Feen | photos by the Ginger Companies
Ginger Flesher Sonnier has a mind for math, a heart
for engaging others to enjoy life, and a creative flair
for turning any space into one of grace and grandeur.
She started as a high school math teacher (in Pennsylvania)
and then as a math department chair at a private school in
Charleston.
But an extended stay in Europe got her thinking about life beyond
the walls of a school.
“My husband Darren had a government contract to work in Europe
for three months. We lived in Germany, and on our travels
around Europe, we discovered escape rooms. I was so enthralled
with the concept and loved puzzles, but I noticed all the escape
rooms were dingy.”
Flesher Sonnier, a design genius, realized that creating escape
rooms with the panache of a boutique hotel might be fun.
So, she did just that. She opened an escape room in Washington,
DC, with a lounge and bar that hinged on solving a mystery to get
out of the room. The first Escape Room Live became so popular that
she opened other DC locations.
Flesher Sonnier took her genius for creation to another level,
opening Axe Throwing spaces called Kick Axe. They opened in the
Northeast and were also a success.
But her latest creation, THRōW Social®, has everyone in Delray
Beach rejoicing. The restaurant, bar, music venue, and experiential
hotspot has everyone putting on their dancing shoes and enjoying
the utopian atmosphere.
There is TapGlo Ping Pong, Darts, Axe Throwing, live music, a floral
photo wall, Corn Hole, Giant Jenga games, and more. It’s like a
floating cruise ship that never leaves port.
“I take pride in creating elevated environments that are comfortable
and casual in a ‘Barefoot Luxury’ vibe. This exemplifies what
I’m trying to provide with my THRōW Social® locations. They are
fun, beautiful, and lively - the perfect places to hang out!”
You bet they are. The indoor-outdoor space encompassing
THRōW Social® is a veritable panacea for action and relaxation
amid Mother Nature’s most treasured assets. There is a Tiki Bar, a
large outdoor stage for live music, a 22-foot video wall, Palm Beachstyle
cabanas for privacy or parties, and private lounge areas for
fun and fanfare.
Since Hawaii and Palm Beach are two of Flesher Sonnier’s favorite
spots, it’s no surprise that Throw Social® is a mixture of this
grandiose yet grounded lifestyle. “In all of my brands, I always
choose to provide immersive experiences that transport people to
another place or time.”
That is exactly how she rolls. Guests can bask in this new-found
happy place that allows them to roam free and enjoy life. There are
board games, Live Karaoke bands every Tuesday, Country Night on
Wednesdays with Line Dancing Lessons, and a VIP experience any
day of the week.
There is also Sunday Brunch (with bottomless mimosas for two
hours), popular DJs spinning music, or live music on the large outdoor
stage. The 11,000 indoor-outdoor space is tropical in theme,
with neon signs and hot pink accents with black and white striped
awnings and banquettes.
There are furnished Cabanas with a welcome bottle, open bar
COPYRIGHTED
packages, beer buckets, and games. There is also a retractable
pergola that ensures your VIP experience outdoors. The theme
every night of the week is “Wanna Party Like a Flock Star?”
Of course you do! No matter how old you are, life offers you
possibilities. And Flesher Sonnier is the quintessential master
of ceremonies to help you reach that nexus of nirvana. That is
why everyone is flocking to this exciting new venue.
They were recently named the new “IT” bar in Palm Beach
County, specializing in music, fun, fanfare, and food.
“We have the ability to accommodate every event, big or
small, through our one-of-a-kind experiential entertainment
concepts. From a non-traditional bar scene to a spacious venue
to celebrate, THRōW Social® is your go-to location for celebrations
and events of all kinds! Our retro Palm Beach venue
is perfect for lounging on a cabana or snapping a selfie in front
of a kitschy neon sign.”
It’s also the perfect venue for Birthday parties, Bridal showers,
Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Corporate events, Weddings, and Bachelor/Bachelorette
parties.
They have frozen margaritas, pina coladas, organic vodka
infused with a flower essence, and other island-inspired
drinks. You can dine on lite bites and appetizers or have dinner
to fit your mood. There are drinks to fulfill your island fantasies
and a very happy Happy Hour.
“I always create places that we would want to hang out at,
and so far, it has never failed. Since day one, we have been so
busy; it’s been a great ride.”
At THRōW Social®, the world is your oyster, and the vibe is
elegance and exuberance. It’s a world with the best life has to
offer, and you are invited.
STAMM DevelopmeNT group
Opening Their First South
Florida Office In Delray Beach
By diane feen
When Michael Stamm
says something, he
stands behind his word.
Michael Stamm, President and CEO of Stamm Development Group
70 | january 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
The CEO and President of Stamm Development Group (“SDG”),
Michael Stamm, saw the potential of Delray Beach for the
luxury home market and, like a mountaineer, put his flag on
the top of the highest peak.
That was almost three years ago. Since then, Stamm, a Philadelphia
real estate development leader, has successfully acquired, entitled,
and developed a portfolio of high-end luxury single-family
homes and townhomes in downtown Delray.
They currently have 20+ new construction projects - from the
ocean to the intra-coastal waterway - and beyond. The properties
are all built with the utmost luxury, with light-infused great rooms,
designer kitchens, high-ceiling foyers, and natural light that permeates
the entire premises.
Stamm knows this market well. He knows Delray Beach has the
rare combination of a thriving nightlife and a luxury beach lifestyle
with the intimacy and quaint vibe of a small town.
Since he set his sights on Delray Beach, his goal was to become
a leader in the real estate development of this idyllic town. And it
seems he has done just that.
“We have a number of exciting projects in construction and a
whole new wave of projects at various price points to break ground
in 2023. If you missed the first phase of our projects, we have new
phases coming to market this year,” said Philadelphia native Stamm.
To cement their presence in Delray, they opened their first South
Florida office at 900 East Atlantic Avenue, Suite 5, just steps from
the ethereal sand that attracted Stamm.
The office is an interactive sales studio where prospective
homeowners (or buyers under contract) can come and experience
Stamm Development Group and its unique approach to portfolio
hospitality.
“Homeowners can touch and feel the materials that will make up
their dream home; meet the interior designer, architect, and every
part of our South Florida team.”
Stamm has brought his business and real estate development
savvy to South Florida with a blitz of beautiful new luxury homes
and townhomes that allow the glory of Mother Nature to grace the
indoors and to extend outward.
They also bring a unique aspect to design development by allowing
people to semi-customize their homes. “Everyone wants to put
their flair into their new home. We don’t have one style - we use different
architectural and interior design styles depending on what
we think fits the area.”
Ibis House – 415 Andrews Avenue
With this attention to detail and infinite expertise in home building,
the SDG brand has become a major one in town. They have gotten
to know their customers and neighbors in Delray Beach and
have received valuable referrals from former home buyers.
“We are working with the top architects, interior designers, engineers,
and elite sales teams in Delray Beach to craft carefully curated
projects that are nothing like the market has ever seen before.”
But it’s no surprise to someone as ambitious and hard-working
as Michael Stamm. They have an entire staff from Philadelphia to
South Florida and over 700 units in construction in Philadelphia.
SDG’s portfolio consists of luxury single-family homes and
townhomes that are a tastefully designed blend of modern and
coastal designs, bringing a Hampton’s flair to the market.
One of their first projects is 10Palms, which almost entirely
sold-out pre-completion. 10Palms is a luxury, upscale and vibrant
collection of 10 townhomes in the heart of one of Delray Beach’s
most desirable neighborhoods, Palm Trail. Steps from the Intracoastal,
close to the beach and Atlantic Avenue, 10Palms is an
oasis of tranquillity and a testament to luxury living at its finest.
SDG’s other exciting projects include breathtaking beachfront
estates, barrier island single-family residences, and more.
To highlight a few: They have an 11-single-family home development
site adjacent to 10Palms set to break ground in 2023.
Their project, Zuria, at 1001 White Drive, is a spectacular point
Intracoastal lot that will be a boater’s dream, having all the amenities
of greatness: a private swimming pool, luxurious modern
interior design, and an abundance of outdoor living spaces. Their
project Ibis House, at 415 Andrews Avenue, has over 8,800 square
feet of high-end amenities (and privacy) mixed with exclusive island
fauna and flora.
One word can spell disaster in the home–building market: supply
chain scarcity. But with SDG, that reality doesn’t affect them
like many builders. “We are able to navigate it well because we
are commercial builders in Philadelphia. Because of that, we have
leverage in supply houses and the building products industry. We
use our influence in the supply chain to build luxury homes in
South Florida.”
SDG also uses its influence and success to help build strong
communities and invest in charitable ventures.
Michael founded The SDG Foundation in 2019, a non-profit
that serves and uplifts children and families in need. Through
fundraising, strategic donations, and active volunteering, the SDG
Foundation empowers and improves the neighborhoods they
both live and work in.
Zuria – 1001 White Drive
In Philadelphia and Florida, the SDG Foundation has raised and
donated over $750,000. This includes food and daily essential
care packages to hundreds of families through the COVID-19 pandemic,
awarding over $80,000 in scholarships to first-generation
college students, raising money and awareness for mental health,
and more.
The SDG Foundation also partnered with Feeding South Florida,
donating $10,000 at their ground-breaking ceremony for the
10Palms development project.
“We are a very philanthropically focused company. We are excited
to be a part of the real estate market and philanthropy in the
South Florida community,” said Michael.
SDG will continue to water the seeds of growth in the Delray
community. Their ability to construct regal luxury living spaces
with the ultimate pampering and precision has garnered them a
thriving following.
“Since COVID, people’s lifestyles have been reset, and the world
has changed. That includes a large migration to shore locations.
Our Delray Beach properties are a combination of elegant luxury
designs, craftsmanship, and a rare level of hospitality and concierge
services.”
MAURICI SALON
The Experts in Making You
Look Beautiful
By diane feen | Photos by melissa korman
Are you looking for an intimate
client-focused salon to bring out
your inner (and outer) beauty?
Look no more. Maurici Salon has a new owner that is wowing
clients with their excellence in hair care products, colorists,
stylists, and treatments.
Owner Peter Klein owned high-end luxury salons in Connecticut
and knows how to create a dream salon for guests. “When you walk
in our door, it’s all about the health and integrity of your hair. Our
purpose is always to listen to our client’s concerns and make sure
they get what they want.”
As a means to this lofty goal, they offer free consultations and
take time to get to know you. They listen to your needs and desires
and excel in creating the best option for your hair.
Others agree.
“I went to Maurici’s salon to have highlights done. My hair was
over processed with bleach. Esther did highlights and lowlights
with color, cut, and blow dry. OMG! My hair is gorgeous and healthy.
I can’t get over how I walked in and how I walked out! I am so happy
with my hair. She is extremely talented and so nice and professional.
The salon is beautiful and clean. The staff is also just so friendly.
After 18 years in Florida, I finally found my place,” said Stacey.
72 | january 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Stacey is right. Esther is a pro when it comes to color, cutting, and
styling hair. She has been performing miracles on clients’ hair for
over 23 years and is the heir apparent for this profession.
“I love what I do. There is nothing else I would rather be doing.
My mother was a stylist and had a salon in Connecticut specializing
in hair color. Working with hair is second nature to me.”
This Master Colorist and Master Stylist is compassionate and
kind – and wants what is best for her clients. She knows that every
seven years, the hair changes, and she informs clients that different
things in life can affect the hair. “Different things affect your hair
– like your diet, stress, medication, and pregnancy. It is important
to me that people leave here looking good and feeling good. The
integrity of your hair is paramount here.”
Their extensive collection of products helps part of this petition
for perfection. They use only L’Oreal Professional and Kerastase
hair care products. And their L’Oreal professionally trained Master
Stylists and Colorists treat clients to a uniquely relaxing experience.
Everyone wants what is best for each other and their customers.
This quaint, cozy salon is the perfect milieu for beauty. There is no
pomp and circumstance, only dedicated stylists and colorists waiting
to help you reach a place of haircare nirvana.
Annalise found that and more at Maurici Salon.
“The experience I had was AMAZING! Gul is an artist. She did exactly
what I wanted and gave suggestions to make my haircut even
better. She is the best of the best!
Peter, the owner, is such a great guy too. He gave me a treatment
for free and took my boyfriend for ice cream next door. It’s an amazing
business with a wonderful, family vibe.”
COPYRIGHTED
The treatment that Annalise is talking about is called Fusio-Dose.
Kérastase’s salon customized hair care treatment works wonders
on clients’ hair and is free for first-time guests.
There are stainless steel industrial hair care stations with grommet-adorned
mirrors and a colorful Murano glass chandelier that
will perk up your museum craving.
They also offer the coveted Balayage coloring technique, freehand
painted highlights on your hair. This creates a soft and natural
gradation of lightness toward the ends. The results are always
runway ready, with Hollywood beauty aside.
They also offer treatments and salon styling and coloring techniques.
They have ammonia-free color products, glaze, fantasy colors,
corrective color, L’Oreal Metal Detox, Keratin Brazilian treatments,
and more.
Maurici also does cutting and coloring for men’s hair as well.
Master stylist and colorist Ulises has been in the business for 20
years and has lived all over the world. He brings a natural flair to
beautify your locks and is helpful and in harmony with his clients.
RESHAPE THE ORDINARY
UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT AND OWNERSHIP
Maurici aims to help people of all ages and in all situations. For
those who have thin hair – or need a cover-up – they have European
wigs that are lightweight and stylish. They come in all colors and
styles and include ponytail add-ons, buns, and hair accessories.
The little salon (with the big vision) wants people who need wigs
to be able to find them easily and be comfortable. “It is amazing
what hair can do for your self-esteem and confidence,” adds Esther.
They also have a collection of designer-inspired shawls that are
classic and classy. In all colors, they are a must for keeping warm
and keeping your fashion sense in check.
Come to Maurici Salon and be treated like royalty and leave looking
runway ready. They have “world-class concierge service” and
are touted as a top salon in Palm Beach County.
ALLYSON SULLIvaN
Giving to Clients and
Giving Back to Society
By diane feen | Photos by melissa korman
When clients talk about Allyson Sullivan, they speak in
superlatives. The real estate agent, who works for Lang
Realty in Delray Beach, has garnered a superstar status
through her diligence, intelligence, and fierce negotiations.
But it is not accolades that this 20-year real estate veteran
wants to talk about this holiday. “Giving back is my passion.
I am very involved with a local charity called Live Like Jake.
My role as a realtor has helped me bring awareness to this Foundation
and what it stands for.”
The Live Like Jake Foundation raises awareness for childhood
drowning prevention and provides financial and emotional support
for families who have experienced a drowning accident. They
also offer scholarships for self-rescue swim lessons for families that
cannot afford them.
Sullivan met Live Like Jake Foundation founder and Executive Director
Keri Morrison when they were both selling real estate 20 years
ago. Morrison was selling new homes in Delray Beach at the time.
But nine years ago, everything changed for Morrison. Her 2-yearold
son Jake drowned in the Intracoastal after slipping out the back
door while she was nursing her then 12-week-old daughter. “It took
over 20 minutes to find him, and he was never revived.”
What was revived, though, was Morrison’s selfless and everlasting
faith that this should never happen to anyone’s child again.
“Drowning is the leading cause of death of children from the ages
of one to four. But, it is preventable,” said Morrison, who added,
“This can happen to the best of parents and is completely preventable
with proper layers of protection.”
The layers have been carefully honed by the Live Like Jake Foundation.
Morrison hopes that prevention will stop accidents like the
one that took the life of her precious Jake.
The Foundation offers scholarships for self-rescue swim lessons
to children (as young as six months old) across the country.
They promote ISR (Infant Swimming Resource) and help other
families with medical and funeral expenses after a drowning accident.
The Foundation has also built an indoor pool in Palm Beach
Gardens for year-round ISR lessons. “We’ve had over 600 children
learn to self-rescue since the pool opened two years ago. It’s yearround
because drowning knows no season.”
If you wonder what it means to Live Like Jake, the Morrisons will
tell you. “Many people can remember how it was to be a child, full
of life, fascinated with nature and the world around them. For Keri
and I to ‘Live Like Jake’ means living with no prejudgments, needing
very little to be happy, not getting bogged down with petty things or
inconsequential circumstances,’” said Keri’s husband, Roarke.
Sullivan knew Jake and has been an active promoter of the cause.
There is an annual 5K race in Jupiter and an annual Gala this spring.
Sullivan sponsors each event and goes beyond just supporting Live
Like Jake events.
“I have been involved in every fundraising activity. I also help
new homeowners with swimming pools to raise awareness and use
precautions. Kids need self-rescue swim lessons.”
Morrison is adamant that the more parents know, the safer children
will be from drowning. “Allyson really tries to bring awareness
to her clients. She has given ISR lessons to families with young
children as closing gifts. We also have awareness cards, and realtors
give them out as a layer of protection.”
Children who attend these classes learn how to float to get air
when in water and are taught to swim. Parents learn about layers
of protection, like pool fences and locks.
Sullivan is not only a protector of children from drowning but
has also protected her clients in real estate.
“This was our first home-buying experience, and we couldn’t have
found a better agent. Allyson’s local knowledge was invaluable in
helping us find the perfect area to narrow our search. After we found
the perfect home for us, Allyson leveraged her network to help us answer
each question that came up. She helped us connect with great
inspectors and a phenomenal title agent,” said one client.
As for sales, Sullivan had another banner year selling condos and
homes. “Downtown Delray is my niche market with a mix of townhomes,
condos, and single-family homes. My advice to homeowners
or buyers is to work with a realtor with a proven track record.”
Sullivan is just that. “l had another successful year selling property
in downtown Delray. I know every inch of Delray and pride
myself on having a keen knowledge of townhomes, condos, and
single-family homes.”
This year Sullivan has been delighted to help clients buy and sell
historic homes. “I love Delray Beach and feel blessed to be able to
sell real estate here. I am enthusiastic about the new year and look
forward to another spectacular year in 2023!”
Acupuncture Zen
A Healing Mecca
Dr. Tony Willcox Brings
His A-Game Every Day
By diane feen
It is said that life is one big movie screen.
We project what we want into our lives,
and the world responds in kind.
When you’ve got a Movie Star in the house its time for the Glasses!
Dr. Tony with FBI’s MoST Wanted Jess LaCroix aka Julian McMahon
For Dr. Tony Willcox, this happens rather swiftly.
The reason is that this Doctor of alternative therapies and
acupuncture has created a narrow path for those who want to
climb into their greatness.
Actor Julian McMahon found this to be true. The former Nip/Tuck
and FBI: Most Wanted star happened to be in Miami, Florida, on vacation
when he went on a search for someone who had NovoTHOR
Red Light Therapy.
McMahon found a healing professional with the ultimate in healing
devices and acupuncture, and the two Australian natives became
fast friends. The LA resident combed the Internet and came
up with Dr. Tony’s name and address in Delray Beach. Though the
two had never met, it was kismet.
“Dr. Tony is extremely gifted, connected, and present. He is a
spiritual healer who is intuitive and conscious. He uses his intuition
to understand your body and knows how to guide you to the right
tools for healing and maintaining your health.”
76 | january 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
McMahon found Dr. Tony’s Acupuncture Zen as the launching
pad for trying his unique (and coveted) healing modalities. McMahon
had read about NovoTHOR for years and was intent on finding
someone who had it.
The results were just as amazing as the research that preceded it.
“I loved the NovoTHOR bed - and found it rejuvenating. It allows the
body to heal and gives you the ability to do more physical activity,”
said McMahon, who just wrapped up a movie called “The Supremes
at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat.”
The NovoTHOR bed is a whole-body red-light therapy using 660
nm visible red and 850 nm near-infrared light to treat injuries, increase
blood circulation, reduce pain, relax muscles/joints, and improve
energy levels. “It’s the top of the line for relaxation and stress
reduction. Even the US Special Forces use NovoTHOR®.”
Dr. Tony has spent his life searching for –
and learning – the most up-to-date modalities
to change lives and create a calm landscape
for patients to restore their health. Dr.
Tony has a Double Doctorate in Acupuncture,
a Clinical Doctorate in the US and a
PhD. in Acupuncture from China. He is also
one of the only Acupuncture doctors in the
US who has completed a published Scientific
Clinical Study with human participants
on Mild Cognitive Impairment.
To accomplish great things, you have to
be a great thing. And Dr. Tony is just that.
McMahon agrees. “Dr. Tony feeds into
the modality of being a spiritual healer.
He gets to express his passion for healing
at Acupuncture Zen. You can feel it
and see it in his nurturing and healing
space in Delray. He is thoughtful and kind and
comes from that place to heal people.”
In a quiet way, Dr. Tony has helped many people heal from injuries
both mentally and physically. If you listen to those touched by
his sturdy and studied methods, it seems like miracles come out of
his office at 900 East Atlantic Avenue quite often.
But Dr. Tony is too modest and self-aware to tout his miracles.
But others are forthcoming about their miraculous healings.
“I was at my wit’s end. Six years ago, I had a car accident that left
me with vertigo, carpal tunnel, and headaches. I also had severe arthritis
in my neck and shoulders. I was on pain medication all day.
After three treatments with Dr. Tony, my vertigo was gone, and after
ten, my carpal tunnel, neck, and shoulder problems were gone. I
don’t take pain medication now and didn’t need surgery for carpal
tunnel. My neurologist was stunned with my results,” said Kelly.
Having practiced for over 17 years, Dr. Tony
provides acupuncture and dry needling with
great success, but he also offers Cupping Therapy.
This healing modality removes toxins and
offers pain relief for headaches, migraines, and
high blood pressure. It also helps reduce inflammation
and degenerative conditions like
arthritis and can reduce anxiety, stress, allergies,
and fatigue.
They also offer state-of-the-art K-Laser therapy.
This new 100 W laser (the world’s strongest
and first therapeutic laser with Artificial
Intelligence) measures the depth of penetration
for wavelength and tissue according to
each patient. It’s a valuable tool for tendon and
ligament maladies, pain and inflammation of
joints, tennis and golfers’ elbow, and more.
Dr. Tony has treated patients with acupuncture
for all types of medical issues. “You would
be surprised what this integrative medicine
can help with.”
Not only did Julian McMahon
discover this center of the healing
universe to be the “real thing,”
but so did others in the sports and
entertainment world. Dr. Tony has
helped Jon Bon Jovi, NHL All-star
player Jack Eichel, MLB Player &
Olympian Danny Valencia, PGA Golfer
Gary Woodland, and Glory 4-time
world champion kickboxer Robin Van
Roosmalen who calls him the “Best in
the Business.”
Many people feel that way. They
range in age from teenagers to 104 and
come from backgrounds as varied as the
ground we all walk on.
To Aimee of Delray Beach, he was the
answer to her prayers. “My thanks to Dr.
Tony for his expertise in acupuncture and
ability to offer personalized and patientspecific
care. With his positive and reassuring
personality, matched by his caring staff,
Dr. Tony helped me relax with acupuncture
treatments tailored to address my fertility issues. I am confident
this assisted in my quest and ultimate success with pregnancy. He
really cares greatly for his patients.”
McMahon agrees. “I traveled to see Dr. Tony many times while
I was in Florida. He is a special guy, and I feel blessed to have met
him. He is extraordinarily gifted.”
We agree.
Dr. Tony, You’re Simply the BeST!
The perfect balance of
Needles and Spiritual Healing.
Thank You! Julian McMahon
My Experience with the
USS Arizona
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii
By Harvey Lustig
Last month, December 7th
brought back memories…
In 1955 I joined the US Navy. My first duty assignment was aboard
the USS Midway CVA 41. After a year and a half of being off the
shores of Korea, launching planes supporting troops fighting the
Chinese and North Koreans, I helped put the Midway out of commission
to get extensive repairs.
My next assignment was Ford Island, located in the middle of Pearl
Harbor. Ford Island was a Navy seaplane base. It was also the island
where all the big Navy ships were tied up because that’s where the
deep water was. The Japanese sunk most of the ships.
In addition to my regular duties, I was assigned to take a small boat
to the small wooden dock attached to the smokestacks sticking out of
the water of the sunken USS Arizona, raise the American flag every
morning, and lower the flag every night. We had to do this because the
Navy never decommissioned the USS Arizona. They never removed
the 2,403 bodies from the battleship.
Since then, the Parks Department has taken over caring for the USS
Arizona. There is a big monument built over the ship so people can
visit and pay their respects. If you ever go to Hawaii, make sure you
visit the USS Arizona.
Many years after leaving the Navy, I realized what I did was something
not many men could say they did. When I got in touch with the
Navy Commander in Pearl Harbor telling him what I did, he said I was
the first person to come forward doing that. He asked me to write a
first-person story for the USS Arizona archives. I was honored to do so.
Every year on December 7, I feel very proud to be part of the history
of Pearl Harbor.

Woman with a Golden Heart
If Nancy Chanin were a tree, her
leaves would be different colors, and
her branches would extend outward.
The local Delray resident is a quiet force for good who embraces
causes that affect children, adults, and the underserved.
She has never met a problem she doesn’t try to solve and is
tenacious in getting support (or raising funds) for different causes that
touch her heart.
With Chanin, there is little in the way of pomp and circumstance. What
you see is what you get.
She blends into the crowd effortlessly yet is always at the underpinnings
of righteousness. As the former president and current VP (and
board member) of the Boca Raton Police Athletic League, Chanin is always
facing the right way.
“I always fight for the underdog. I took one of our PAL students to the
eye doctor to get his first pair of glasses. Now he is a pro boxer,” said the
New York City native.
Chanin is a born and bred New Yorker, but she has been in South Florida
for over 25 years. She works hard to support causes and shows up at
events and landmarks that support the betterment of society and Delray
Beach. She recently joined the Delray Beach Kiwanis Club and is on the
board of The Spady Museum, The EJS project, and the Green Implementation
Advancement Board.
It’s hard to categorize Chanin because she defies the ordinary. Her
steps are measured, and she is always on the go for different causes or
political campaigns.
Her interest in politics goes way back. Chanin’s parents had a friend
running a presidential primary campaign, and Nancy traveled across the
country working on it. “I like the excitement and action of a political campaign.
I also like seeing it all come together.”
Chanin is not only an advocate for voter’s rights, but she is an advocate
for anyone who needs to be lifted up – or who was pulled down.
She supports the Spady Museum and those who were held down due to
race or circumstances.
She recently went on a civil rights journey to Alabama and Georgia and
visited sites of historical significance. She walked on the Edmund Pettus
Bridge and visited the National Center for Civil and Human Rights.
Though this might seem irrelevant to some, to Chanin, education in
our history is a valuable asset. “I couldn’t believe how little I learned
about black history in school. This trip was a very emotional journey, and
there was so much to learn. It’s one thing to read about it and another to
be on the very spot where Dr. King marched.”
Emotions don’t define Chanin, nor do they lead her astray. Quite to the
contrary, she is focused and always in motion for others.
As the mother of three grown children, Chanin took on the role of an
involved parent. She volunteered relentlessly for their schools and “did
every job possible.”
“I did fundraising, was a PTA President, Auction Committee Chair,
Walkathon Chair, and more.”
Her selfless involvement in organizations and causes has garnered her
a small cheering section in the cross-culture that makes up Delray Beach.
“Nancy’s generosity helps many non-profits in Delray. Her tremendous
support of Arts Garage and her passion for Equity, Diversity, and
Inclusion helps all of us do better (and be better) as we strive to make
positive and long-lasting changes in our community,” said Marjorie Waldo,
President of Arts Garage.
Waldo isn’t the only one who reveres this petite woman who strides
toward justice. “Nancy Chanin’s dedication to the success of local nonprofit
organizations is highly impactful. Her personal attention and genuine
care of the people she serves makes Nancy’s philanthropic work exemplary,”
said Charlene Farrington, Executive Director of Spady Cultural
Heritage Museum.
Philanthropy is not something new to Chanin. Her parents were very
involved in different causes and set an example for their daughter. “I was
raised with parents who gave back. My mother worked as a volunteer
and fundraiser for many organizations.”
Chanin also writes Op-Ed columns and letters to editors at local newspapers
when there is an injustice or cause. She successfully lobbied the
Boca Raton City Council to support the efforts of PAL when the council
considered cutting off municipal funding.
Her love of writing is secondary to her commitment to justice. She was
a journalism and history major in college and worked for a book publisher,
radio station, and newspapers. She had a column (years ago) for
Teen Machine called “Nancy’s Nook.”
“I wrote celebrity articles for a teen magazine. I wrote articles about
Duran Duran, Miami Vice, Michael J. Fox, and the Brat Pack.”
Though celebrity profiles are a thing of the past, Chanin is a local celebrity
to those who know her. “The EJS Project is lucky to have Nancy
on our board. She has a huge heart and an unwavering passion for helping
build communities. She has always been intentional about where she
gives her time and commitment. She won’t be there for long if her heart is
not in it. She is extremely dependable and hard-working,” said Emanuel
Dupree Jackson Jr., founder of EJS Project.
Chanin has also supported Delray Citizens for Delray Police, the Police
Explorers Program, and the Ice Cream Truck and served on the Police
Advisory Board.
When not taking up the moniker of Community-Activist Fundraiser,
Chanin can be found fighting for voter rights, social justice and helping
with local political campaigns.
When asked how she decides what causes she supports, Chanin has
this to say. “I follow my passion to make things better for as many people
as I can. I try to make a difference.”
And make a difference she does.
“Nancy can be counted on. Whether for an important cause or a friend
in need, she is someone who will do everything possible to make a positive
difference. We are all very fortunate that Nancy Chanin calls Delray
Beach home,” adds Ezra Krieg.
Garlic
Sautéed
Spinach
Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds baby spinach leaves
2 tablespoons good olive oil
2 tablespoons chopped garlic (6 cloves)
2 teaspoons kosher salt
3/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
Lemon
Sea or kosher salt, optional
COPYRIGHTED
Directions
1. Rinse the spinach well in cold water to make sure it’s very
clean. Spin it dry in a salad spinner, leaving just a little water
clinging to the leaves.
2. In a very large pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil and sauté
the garlic over medium heat for about 1 minute, but not until
it’s browned. Add all the spinach, the salt, and pepper to the
pot, toss it with the garlic and oil, cover the pot, and cook it for
2 minutes. Uncover the pot, turn the heat on high, and cook the
spinach for another minute, stirring with a wooden spoon, until
all the spinach is wilted. Using a slotted spoon, lift the spinach
to a serving bowl and top with the butter, a squeeze of lemon,
and a sprinkling of sea or kosher salt. Serve hot.
Salmon
Baked
In Foil
Healthy
Cauliflower
Rice
Ingredients
4 (5 ounces each) salmon fillets
2 teaspoons olive oil plus 2 tablespoons
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
3 tomatoes, chopped, or 1 (14-ounce) can chopped
tomatoes, drained
2 chopped shallots
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried thyme
Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
2. Sprinkle salmon with 2 teaspoons olive oil, salt, and
pepper. Stir the tomatoes, shallots, 2 tablespoons of oil,
lemon juice, oregano, thyme, salt and pepper in a medium
bowl to blend.
3. Place a salmon fillet, oiled side down, atop a sheet of foil.
Wrap the ends of the foil to form a spiral shape. Spoon the
tomato mixture over the salmon. Fold the sides of the foil
over the fish and tomato mixture, covering completely;
seal the packets closed. Place the foil packet on a heavy
large baking sheet. Repeat until all of the salmon have
been individually wrapped in foil and placed on the baking
sheet. Bake until the salmon is just cooked through, about
25 minutes. Using a large metal spatula, transfer the foil
packets to plates and serve.
Ingredients
1 large head cauliflower, separated into 1-inch florets
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, finely diced
Kosher salt
2 tablespoons fresh parsley leaves, finely chopped
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Directions
1. Trim the cauliflower florets, cutting away as much
stem as possible. In 3 batches, break up the florets into
a food processor and pulse until the mixture resembles
couscous.
2. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
At the first wisp of smoke from the oil, add the onions,
and stir to coat. Continue cooking, stirring frequently,
until the onions are golden brown at the edges and have
softened, about 8 minutes. Add the cauliflower, and stir
to combine. Add 1 teaspoon salt, and continue to cook,
stirring frequently, until the cauliflower has softened, 3
to 5 minutes. Remove from the heat.
3. Spoon the cauliflower into a large serving bowl,
garnish with the parsley, sprinkle with the lemon juice
and season to taste with salt. Serve warm.
BY Bill Piechocki and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM
What Has Happened to Truth
in Advertising and Labeling?
Call me old-fashioned, but when I see an advertisement or a label,
I expect it to be based on truthful facts. We have traveled
from words having common meanings to now having legal
definitions. When it comes to health and nutrition, we need to be
as perfect as possible. There are real laws in the United States, and
I am sure elsewhere, that are guidance in this realm but are they
being adhered to?
Let’s begin with pet FOODS. According to the FDA (Federal Food and
Drug Administration), a food can only be used if it is human grade but
allows the use of the word FOOD when it is NOT human grade or consumable.
Okay, we are not off to a good start. Let’s now look at the legal definition
of “chicken” …is it human grade? Is it meat, just bone, or parts?
Is it chicken or some other bird? We do not know. Another situation is
the use of “Buffalo” meat. Is it American Bison or Water Buffalo from
Asia?
Do you see my dilemma? We work in this space daily not only with
the meats but with the herbs as well, and we are constantly faced with
terms like “USDA approved,” “Organic,” 100% Natural”, and “Always
Free Range” that are not even legal terms. You need to know and understand
the differences.
Any product, meat, poultry, or fish not by FDA rules of slaughter is
not considered FOOD but is designated as FEED grade for animal feed
only. You need to know the difference by reading the label. You have to
ask this, “if it is not fit for human consumption, is it safe for my pets?’
Did these animals die of a disease, or were they euthanized with chemicals?
Other considerations not shown on the label are the not fit for
human consumption products diseased, treated with harmful drugs,
or exposed to deadly toxins?
The labeling laws only require we list the ingredients we add, such
as vitamins, minerals, flavors, or preservatives. However, there is no
way to know how those products were derived, processed, or manufactured.
We have seen many processed pet food recalls for excess vitamin
D as this added supplement is not a natural form but a usually
synthetic product called vitamin D.
Many pet foods are labeled as “complete and balanced,” and some
with “for all life stages.” Let’s just break this down. How can any food
claim that it is complete as the body is dynamic and ever-changing,
which means its’ nutritional requirements are constantly changing?
Also, do you believe that the nutritional requirements for a growing
puppy or kitten are the same for an active young adult or a senior? If
these feed-grade meals are complete and balanced, why is there a rapid
growth in the industry of treating pets with so many health issues?
The truth is that this occurs with every transaction, every moment
of every day. Let’s recognize that we must do our homework to find
the truth.
sussie tita bruno
This pretty girl was rescued from Puerto Rico in
September, and she’s a doll! Just about 7 months
old, Sussie is 29 lbs. of gentle love. We think she’s a
Lab mix, with a long, thin body and glossy fur. She’s
a bit shy and cautious because she’s been through a
lot, but she becomes your friend quickly.
TITA is a supermodel! This spayed, 52 lb., 3 year
old girl has one ice blue eye and one golden eye.
She’s a housebroken Plott Hound Mix from Puerto
Rico. This babe loves long walks and although she’s
strong, she’s mannerly on a leash. She craves ear
scratches, snuggles, and someone to kiss every day.
Bruno stopped you in your tracks with his pleading
eyes, didn’t he? He’s incredibly adorable, just 7
months old, a Puerto Rico rescue pup who’s so
sweet, gentle, and friendly. He’s got his whole life
ahead to fill your home with happiness and he’s
ready to start today. Bruno is neutered and 30 lbs.
