Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: The Lookout at Ferry Park. The restaurant on the second 

floor of the Cape May ferry terminal began offering brunch a few weeks 

ago and it’s been a hit. From the tasty food to the wild bloody mary recipes, 

there’s a lot to talk about. 

The vibe: It was a Saturday afternoon and a packed house. Courtney 

and her gang, Jeff, Matt and Darren — the same group who brought 

you their Cricket Club experience a few columns ago — really lived it 

up this weekend and are back to tell you more! It was rainy which made 

the views a bit grey, but still breathtaking with waves rippling across the 

Delaware Bay and the ferry heading in and out of the dock. The food was 

coming out quick, drinks quicker, and there was much to be enjoyed. 

The drinks: Now let’s talk about those wild bloody mary recipes, 

and a few other cocktails. Courtney enjoyed the Mary Mary Quite Contrary 

— a green tomato bloody mary with southern spices — Darren 

started with the Lookout Mary (Here I Come) — this classic bloody has 

clam juice and is topped with everything but the kitchen sink — and Jeff 

went for the Peach and Basil Bellini. They then moved on to Death in the 

Afternoon, Black Coffee in Bed and the Tea and Toast which is served in 

cute little teapots for the table — great for a cute little pic. Definitely a 

hair-of-the-dog kind of day, and very well spent. 

The food: Everyone went for the Croque Madame aside from Courtney 

who couldn’t pass on the Salmon Hash. They took it a step further 

and ordered an Avocado Toast and Stuffed French Toast with a fresh 

blackberry filling. The group finished strong and are looking forward 

to the next visit — especially because the stuffed French toast filling 

changes regularly, offering a pleasant surprise each time. 

The takeaway: The Lookout is open for dinner Thu-Fri 4-7pm and 

for brunch and dinner Sat-Sun 11am-7pm. Walk-ins are welcome, and 

reservations are recommended for larger parties. Enjoy the views and 

try the bloody marys — no two are the same and the presentation will 

have you pulling your phone out to snap a photo immediately.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

As mentioned prior, barring an 

unforeseen change of circumstance, 

this will be my final Undertow. Ever? 

Well, I never say never (I worked at 

Elaine’s three times, for crying out 

loud, and they hate me over there), but it’s 

hard to envision a scenario in which I return. 

But we can get into that a bit later. For now, 

let’s enjoy one more collection of semi-mundane 

observations and Grade-A dad jokes 

before we say goodbye. (Which is going to be 

hard enough to do without people like Maddie 

Hogan randomly popping up on my Facebook 

telling me how much they like me… let’s keep 

it professional, shall we? Sniff, sniff, HONK!) 

It was so cold last Friday night I saw 

Jussie Smollet out looking for a Subway. 

Not one, but TWO members of the Cape 

Harbor Shell crew (Steve Bistak and Jerry 

Mancuso) asked me which door was sticky a 

few weeks back. You just can’t teach this level 

of customer service — you’re just born with it. 

(Door was still a little sticky — I’m not telling 

them which door, though, and this being my 

last column it will just have to haunt them 

through eternity.) 

I don’t want to say Cathrine is superdrugged 

up from her shoulder injury, but on 

Christmas Eve she brushed her teeth with Ben 

Gay. (Many, many thanks to those of you who 

have reached out with your good thoughts.) 

Since my wife was waylaid with injury, 

and we had to wait for some checks to clear 

before we could go Christmas shopping, the 

boys and I went to an actual mall to do so. The 

Hamilton Mall, to be precise. It is there that 

the first seeds of The Undertow were planted, 

when Cath and I went to the Cinnabon only 

to be told they were out of cinnamon buns. It 

was too perfect. Anyway, I was surprised to 

find everything I needed at reasonable prices, 

and unpleasantly surprised to find around 40 

percent of the stores closed. And, like, I’m 

glad the laws have changed and no one’s going 

to jail for it anymore, but does EVERY shop 

have to smell like weed? 

I think coming in 16th in the world in a 

sport where “soccer is the future” since the 

70s is pretty good. 

Low Testosterone Hand Dryer of the 

Week: I love playing acoustic gigs at Cold 

Spring Brewery, as I did last weekend on a 

last-minute call with Sugar Dave Hughes, but 

I’d die of old age waiting for that blower to dry 

my hands. 

I am a member of the last great generation, 

Generation X, and grew up on Rankin 

& Bass Christmas classics like Rudolph the Red 

Nosed Reindeer and Year Without a Santa Claus, 

so I am not some pampered millennial when I 

declare that Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July

I upgraded my Hulu to commercial-free 

last week for one 

reason; the mind-numbing NJM 

“we are the tippy top we’re top 

insurance” commercials they 

play incessantly on every break. 

To the point where I would not 

be surprised to find that NJM is a 

stealth investor in Hulu. 

After he finishes Dune (Part 

1 was my favorite movie of… 

whatever year it came out… 

everything is a blur since March 

17, 2020), I hope director Denis 

Villanueve makes another 

straight-up thriller, because I 

rewatched Prisoners last week and 

it is an absolute banger. 

Gigs of the Week: For my two 

final shows of 2022 (and two of 

my final gigs ever? More on that 

after this), I’m going out with 

a couple of bangers; December 

30 in the Brown Room and New 

Year’s Eve at the Corinthian Yacht 

Club. New Year’s is a private gig 

so you better all jam into the 

Brown Room the night before to 

shower me with long goodbyes 

and loads of cash. Thank you, 

Jerry Kolber, for being a great 

musical partner and good friend. 

Why might it be two of my 

last gigs ever, you might ask? 

Shut up and I’ll tell you, I might 

answer. Since becoming virtually 

unemployed a little over a month 

ago (writing this column and 

delivering magazines are, shockingly, 

not enough to make a living 

on) I’ve been doomscrolling the 

Indeed app like it’s Twitter, looking 

for a job, any job, and failing 

spectacularly. Seriously. I didn’t 

even get an interview at Arby’s 

(side note: Arby’s isn’t my go-to, 

but it never fails to satisfy). It was 

getting fairly depressing (okay, 

it was getting VERY depressing) 

until I finally broke through and 

landed a gig. Starting next week, 

I will be joining the materials 

supply team at Cape Regional 

Medical Center. This is basically 

a supply chain job, but as we’ve 

all learned since the Dumbassin-Chief 

crashed the economy, 

supply chains are pretty important. 

So, I got that going for me. 

Which is nice. However, it’s a 

40-hour-a-week and every-other-weekend 

job, so I’m not sure 

how much room there’ll be for 

performing. Believe me, if I can, 

I will, But we shall see. You can 

read about my gigs in here next… 

oh wait… never mind. 

Lastly this week, goodbye. 

Without getting overly sentimental, 

in 2003 I emailed the 

editor-in-chief of the fledgling 

Exit Zero magazine about writing 

a sports or movie or TV or 

local gossip column. That editorin-chief 

said, “Ok.” Nearly two 

decades, 750+ columns and 15 

serialized short stories later, here 

we are. I’m grateful for the opportunity 

I’ve had to share my worldview 

for the dozens of hundreds 

who happened upon this page 

and thought, “Sure, why not?” 

You’ve “known” my 21-19- 

17-year old sons since they were 

infants or younger. You’ve known 

me since I was in my early 30s, 

newlywed and full of hope (I look 

back in fondness at that naive 

little guy). In turn, I’ve gotten 

to know many of you. I can’t 

remember any of your names, but 

I know you. You’re cool. You’re 

funny. And you’re good looking. 

You can take a joke and throw 

one right back. You understood 

that, even if I went a little too far, 

I never did so with malice in my 

heart. Mostly, I just wanted to 

make you laugh and I hope I did. 

I gave her my heart. She gave 

me a pen.

Looking for that last minute holiday gift 

or trying to figure out what to do with 

that gifted loot? Why not invest it in 

a hobby that is tantamount to opening 

presents every day of the year. Of 

course, I’m talking about bird watching. 

North America’s second most popular 

outdoor pastime. Every morning, Ma Nature 

puts out piles of colorfully wrapped presents. 

They are a delight to our eyes, music to our 

ears, a challenge for young and old alike. 

You get close enough to note the bird’s “field 

marks,” pin the name to the bird and cast a 

spell of binding over it. Every day a new array 

of possibilities. 

Your hobby goes wherever you do. Birds 

are everywhere, nature’s ambassadors opening 

the door to a world of discovery — 750 

species in North America, 10,000 in the world 

and the nearest one is right outside your door. 

On the utility line or under the hedge. Or take 

a drive to Cape May Point. Scan Lake Lily. 

Ducks galore. They’re big, boldly patterned 

and they swim in the open. OK, some of them 

do dive and not every bird is a duck. Here’s 

your first lesson in bird identification. 

Step 3: Pin the bird down to the family. 

Not everything that swims is a duck, goose 

or swan. Coots and grebes swim and dive, 

too. Coots look like charcoal tea pots with a 

white spout. Grebes resemble meat loafs with 

a chicken’s head. 

Steps 1 and 2? Binoculars and a field 

guide. But you can buy both items for less 

than dinner in Cape May. Luckily the Cape 

May Bird Observatory is seated right on the 

north end of Lake Lily. The shop has the best 

selection of optics in New Jersey and new and 

used field guides. The bird check lists are free. 

They tell you the seasonal abundance of birds 

in Cape May. Fill the list with check marks 

and you have a record of your discoveries. 

It’s called a Life List. After that, you can start 

keeping “Year Lists” as a way of getting you 

out all year long. Birds are seasonal. Some 

only breed here, others only in winter. 

“The Sibley Guide,” written in Cape May 

Point, is the gold standard but the Kaufman 

Guide is more user-friendly. Other guides? 

Plenty. Walls of them and bird feeders, too, 

plus lots of books dealing with other natural 

history subjects. 

Bird seed? Smeltzer and Sons, Cape May 

Court House sells high quality seed. Black 

oil Sunflower seed is loved by birds. If you 

are buying mixed seed, avoid cheap (cheep?) 

fillers like cracked corn. Don’t forget the suet.

The Movie Column 

By arts columnist Tom Sims 

So many movies, so little time. Add 

television shows in the mix, and 

there’s even more to review. It’s been 

a good year with plenty of outstanding 

content. 

To make it easier, the “Flix You Missed” 

podcast has been updated with many columns 

from this year. Visit flixyoumissed.com and 

select the podcasts for dozens of reviews. 

With all that’s out there, use it as a guide to 

catch up on what you may have skipped. 

The year started with the animated hit 

Encanto. We went through superhero blockbusters 

and quirky television shows. The 

Adam Sandler hit Hustle was a highlight for me 

since it was filmed where I work. The Netflix 

game show Bullsh*t taught me that people can 

still win big at trivia even without the slightest 

clue as to the right answer. 

Nope and Prey were both standouts. And 

the year ended strong with Black Panther in 

theaters and the TV series Wednesday. Experts 

tell us that we’re getting back to theaters but 

not at pre-pandemic levels yet. It’s challenging 

to get back when so much entertainment is 

streaming, right? Let’s see what 2023 brings. 

Avatar is supposed to usher a big screen comeback.

An accomplishment for me this year 

was publishing “The Book Is Better: Stories 

Inspired by Not-So-Famous Motion Pictures.” 

The book is a compilation of adaptations, 

mostly stories but a couple essays and a poem 

as well — all based on the quirky little movies 

I produced over the years. I’m an amateur 

filmmaker at best. But it was fun to create the 

films over the years. They’ve screened at festivals 

(including the Cape May Film Festival), 

and other venues over a decade or so. 

The videos were mostly shorts, but it 

turns out there were more narratives to create. 

The book was a blast to write, taking 

the ideas and characters then expanding on 

them. And I’ve also been able to launch my 

first audiobook based on “The Book Is Better,” 

something I’ve always wanted to do. You can 

find that on Spotify for free. A summary of 

the stories and a link to the audiobook — as 

well as where to buy the paperback book — is

If you’re a thalassophile, or lover of the 

sea, a salt-scented wedding is a dream 

come true. Cape May offers options, 

from the simple beauty of a wedding 

picnic to a fairy-tale extravaganza. 

If you’d like to be close enough to have 

a mermaid be your bridesmaid, choose a 

beach wedding. Being a barefoot bride can 

be a budget-friendly option, especially if you 

pay only for the permit, forgoing chairs and 

decor. (If you want chairs, do yourself a favor 

and rent — you don’t want to be stacking 

chairs in your wedding dress.) You can do 

a 30-minute ceremony on the beach, with 

advance planning and permission from the 

City. Remember, photos of your beach wedding 

will include strangers in the background. 

The beach is public, so you can’t ask people 

to leave. However, you’re telling the whole 

world you’re in love, and passersby will be 

offering their best wishes. If that’s not for you, 

consider Convention Hall, overhanging the 

sand, or the top of the Cape May Lighthouse. 

For a simple reception, consider a picnic at 

Cape May Point State Park — their reserved 

area has a shelter and restrooms and can 

accommodate 60 people. Friends of the bride 

and groom have to take the garbage away, and 

the fee is $80 for New Jersey residents. Visit 

nj.gov/dep/parksandforests for information. 

Exit Zero’s Ferry Park, with its panoramic 

views and abundant parking, offers an intimate 

“Mini-Matrimony Package” for up to 

20 guests starting at $3000. They can also 

host huge outdoor events. Flip through this 

paper for more ideas — the Chalfonte offers 

a pretty garden area for your ceremony, gorgeous 

porches and gracious service. Beach 

Plum Farm offers farm-to-table fare and their 

rooster “alarm clock” to get you to the church 

on time. A Congress Hall wedding offers the 

chance to keep the party going in the Boiler 

Room or the Brown Room. The Southern 

Mansion’s Downton Abbey vibes can feel like a 

family estate. The Grand Hotel has experience 

with receptions for beach weddings and offers 

the sundeck for ceremonies or an al fresco 

cocktail hour. Peter Shields is a great choice 

for couples seeking a BYOB option. 

Many of Cape May’s fine dining restaurants 

will accommodate a small wedding, as 

will Willow Creek and other vineyards. Most 

also offer planning advice. Look into accommodations 

— Cape May is likely a destination 

wedding for most of your guests, and hotels 

may require a three-night stay for some weekends. 

Rent a trolley to transport your wedding 

party and avoid parking hassles.

him — he is extremely friendly and playful 

and requires a slow introduction to men. A 

woman owner who is patients with his anxiety 

would be best for Carmine. 

NALA is a happy and social two-year-old girl. 

She has a lot of energy and loves to play fetch 

and run around the yard. Once she works off 

that energy, she relaxes easily and loves to be 

pet. Nala’s leash-walking skills are improving 

daily, and she enjoys investigating her surroundings. 

She has lived with children before 

but needs a slow introduction to cats. 

CRANBERRY came to the shelter as a stray, 

but she is full of life! She enjoys being around 

people and going for long walks with her 

human — her leash skills are excellent. Cranberry 

is still in the early stages of training and 

needs a home that will work on her puppy 

manners. She’ll thrive as the only pet and with 

older children.
