So many fond memories take place in our yards. As children, we
climb the branches of our favorite trees, or run barefoot across the
cool grass. Having your wedding at home brings those memories
full circle. Truly, what could be more intimate and romantic? But as the
big day gets closer and closer, you might find transforming that space a
little more difficult than you originally thought. Don’t sweat it! Here are
a few things to keep in mind when preparing your yard for the big day
to make it all you dream it to be, while not being too labor intensive.
The first thing to think about, before you even start setting up, is
the garden itself. Nothing really much has to be done in backyard
spaces that already have lots of green. No special color is needed. If
anything, the beauty of the grass or simplicity of the trees will speak
for themselves. The only real thing to do is to clean it up a bit. Clear
off dead foliage, put in new mulch, and trim flowers and hedges. Your
ceremony can be focused around your favorite spaces, such as the old
apple tree, and the ceremony itself can be held in between two large
flower pots. Nothing much has to be done to nature to make the effect
enchanting, so don’t worry too much about perfection in the yard.
One of the problems that everyone experiences when holding events in
large open spaces is distinguishing space—where to gather, eat, dance,
and hold the ceremony. Pick a distinguishing factor from your yard.
Maybe it’s a favorite tree or a patch of rose bushes. Maybe there’s some
lovely ivy growing along the fence. Whatever it is, have that be the
backdrop to the ceremony. Here you can place an archway, two groups
of chairs to create the aisle, and an aisle runner. Rugs work well as aisle
runners because they sit well in the grass without shoes going through
them—and look stunning. Consider renting a dance floor for dancing,
and designate tables and chairs close by for the reception. Large white
tents (with heaters for evening weddings) or runner lights strung
across the yard and trees can both designate a reception space, or unify

activities separated around the yard. Distinguishing space makes for natural gathering places for
friends and family to keep themselves happy as they wait for the main event, or keep themselves
occupied while the photographer takes family and wedding party photos.
If you have some space after deciding on your ceremony and reception, or if you’ve decided to
not do a reception at all, consider filling up the outer edges of the yard with transitory spaces.
This will be where people hang out as they transition from one activity to another, and where
they’ll connect if they’re not watching the dance floor. Things like cocktail tables and a bar would
go here. Other ideas for transitory spaces include couches and board games, yard games, a
picture booth, or a signature/gift table.
With all that’s going on and a large yard full of people, the last finishing touch would be to make
sure your guests know where to go and what’s going on there. Traditionally this might mean
handing out a schedule of sorts upon entry, placing friends at the entrance to guide guests, and
placing meal placards at the reception table(s). In a yard space, knowing what to do and where
to go is achieved by clever little signs and strategic placement of activities. The cake, for instance,
might be right beside the reception area, and the meal might be advertised by small sandwich
boards. Signs meant to direct could be as simple as chalkboards or as complicated as arrows

Elevating a Step Above the Rest
You often hear the words “local expert” in real estate, yet oftentimes they’re hollow words. I helped cofound
Elite Realty Partners in 2022 with the idea of bringing a better experience not only for agents
in North Idaho but also for my community. Having a strong background in training and support, I
made the decision to put my skills to work and create a business model geared by hands-on training;
learning new strategies, thinking outside of the box and passing along personal experiences to
my business partners, which has led to a highly trained real estate team in the North Idaho
region. This has resulted in happy customers who receive better representation, along with
progressive industry-leading marketing and consistent innovation.
Basically, the standardized bar of quality and experience have been raised.
So why do we have the word “Partners” in our name? It was important for me to
show the real estate agents that the people I work with are more than team
members, or simply a number. Having an established partnership with
one another creates stronger unity and trust. Every agent who is part of
Elite Realty Partners has a different background, experience, and level of
education. As individuals, we could have grown and survived, but working
together, our growth has exponentially surged—and we have been
thriving. Now this could not be possible without our amazing clients, so
I want to say thank you and God bless.

labeled and docked on lantern posts. There can be a lot of
formality at weddings, with very little or a lot of activity.
No guest will be in any way eager to offend, which can
make people hesitant. Clear communication, signs with
directions markers, and activities that clearly hedge in
the yard space will clear up this small snag in what will
otherwise be a clearly laid-out event.
Nothing much has to be done
to nature to make the effect
enchanting, so don’t worry too much
about perfection in the yard.
Keeping these things in mind, do whatever makes this day
uniquely you! Allow it to be as relaxed, as organized, as
traditional or untraditional as you want it to be. The dance
floor and the ceremony space could be one in the same, as
they are both platforms. The reception space could be in a
separate long tent with seating arrangements, or organized
according to a smattering of circular tables on the outer
edge of the ceremony space. You could have a large meal
served at the tables or served buffet style. Or you could
scrap the meal entirely and serve small appetizers and
drinks. Whatever you feel comfortable with!
It’s your wedding, and you should both be the happiest
people there. If you’re having fun, then your guests will too!

Making a difference
Meet the top three nominees for Bonners
Ferry Living Local's Finest Person of 2022
by CHRISTIAN WEANER
In the several years that Bonners Ferry Living Local has
held a vote for the "finest" businesses and individuals in the
community, some truly inspiring people have been recognized.
This year, the three finalists for the annual Finest Person of the
Year award are no exception. Eli Pine, Dr. Hank Willis and Ron
Sukenik are three men dedicated to serving the Boundary County
community in both their professional and philanthropic work.
So, without further ado, let us get to know Eli, Hank and Ron.
ELI PINE
Even if you do not know Eli Pine personally, you likely know him
as the guy you often see walking along the side of Highway 95.
What you may not know is that Eli is one of the most pluggedin
people in Boundary Country, serving as the director of Hope
House, working at the Boundary County Community Restorium
and volunteering with the Rotary Club.
"I love this town," Eli said. "I love how people come around [each
other] in times of need and help each other out, and I just wanted
to be a part of that."
In May 2022, at the suggestion of the Friends of the Restorium
fundraising group, Eli raised $39,000 with the support of several
local businesses that gave money for each mile that he walked that
month (345 miles in total, which is a "normal month" for Eli).
Around that same time, Eli and his wife Anna also took over
Hope House, the charitable organization that donates clothing
and school supplies to students and families in need throughout
Boundary County.
In addition to their current services, starting January 6, Hope
House is launching a weekly soup kitchen that will be held every
Friday from 5:30 to 7pm at the Senior Hospitality Center.
Eli Pine, Dr. Hank Willis and
Ron Sukenik are three men
dedicated to serving the
Boundary County community
in both their professional and
philanthropic work.
18 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL january/february 2023
Whether he is talking with a resident at the restorium,
handing out clothing at Hope House or serving the
Foundations Committee with the Rotary Club, all that Eli
does for the community comes from a deep sense of gratitude
for the opportunities he has been afforded.
"It comes back to pride in my country and the fact that I'm
blessed to be here," Eli said. "It's the least that I can do for
what I have been given."
DR. HANK WILLIS
Hank Willis moved to Bonners Ferry in 2004 after he
completed his dental school and residency at the University
of Washington, and North Idaho quickly became home for
Hank and his family.
"I was drawn to this close-knit, family friendly community
and small-town values," Hank recalled. "I felt immediately
welcomed by the people here, and Bonners has been a very
good place to raise kids."
After working at a nonprofit clinic in town for several years,
Hank opened his own private practice in 2007, and his dental
work has become a stalwart in the community.
A big passion for Hank is serving others through dental
mission work. Hank has traveled to several countries in
Africa, Haiti, Mexico and the Philippines to provide free
dental care.
"Dental care is desperately needed in many parts of the
world," he shared. "There are people in other countries who
have never seen a dentist and have no access to care. Serving
people in greatest need has been a privilege to me."
When Hank could not travel during COVID-19, he got the
idea to host several free dental days right here in Bonners
Ferry, hoping to help those in the area who struggle to
afford dental care. Hank has also supported the community
through sponsorships and donations to the annual Turkey
Trot, Boundary Ambulance, 9B Trails, Distinguished Young
Women and the Parks and Recreation Department.
"Over the years I've felt very supported by this community,
and I think it's important to find ways to 'give back' to help
make this town a better place and support others," Hank said.
RON SUKENIK
Back in 2002, a friend asked Ron Sukenik to help raise

support among local businesses to start a Rotary Club in Bonners
Ferry. Despite knowing nothing about Rotary International at
the time, Ron diligently began inviting people to the inaugural
meeting designed to charter the group.
"After the meeting, when the dust settled, they had 24
businesspeople sign up," Ron remembered. "But it takes 25
members to charter a club."
Ron did not attend that meeting, but when he found out they only
needed one more member, he decided to join.
Now more than 20 years later, Ron is one of several charter
members still actively participating in the club. His wife has given
him the nickname "Rotary Ron," a fitting title for a man who has
spent approximately 15 years serving on the Rotary Club board
in some capacity and actively involved in nearly every fundraiser,
scholarship fund and event that the group supports.
During his time as a Rotarian, Ron has helped plan and execute
numerous events ranging from the Swish Basketball Tournament
and Polar Bear Plunge to the Kootenai River Ride and Food Bank
Turkey Harvest.
"It just seems like the right thing to do," Ron said of his volunteer
work. "It's become second nature, and sometimes it's a lot of work,
but when you see the net results … the hope for our future as a
society is what motivates me."

in the

by CHRISTIAN WEANER
BETHANY CAVENDER, FIFTH GRADE
Naples Elementary School
Bethany Cavender might have
the most interesting classroom
décor at Naples Elementary
School (NES), and possibly all
of Boundary County School District for
that matter.
Her circular restaurant booth, hanging
rope hammock chair and a futon couch
sit alongside her large aquarium—home
to her class' turtles, Adamson and Mr.
Bubbles—and reptile terrarium, which
houses a leopard gecko that she got from
her son.
"The reason the room is like this is
because of kids that I've had in the
past who said [they wanted] that home
feeling," Bethany explained. "Like they
come in and they feel really comfortable
and at home."
Bethany is in her sixth year as the
fifth-grade teacher at NES and 20th
year working at the school. Whether
serving as a reading coach, running the
school's library, assisting students as
a paraprofessional or leading her own
classroom, Bethany has continuously
been a key part of the NES family since
she joined the staff back in 2002.
Before moving to Boundary County
35 years ago with her husband, Wayne,
Bethany grew up in the small town of
Lynn, Massachusetts, in a suburb north
of Boston.
Bethany had studied to be a teacher but
never quite finished her degree before
getting married and starting her family.
But, after several years working in various
roles at NES, at the age of 50, she decided
to go back and finish out.
"I just waited until it was right, and that
was right," Bethany said.
Bethany took over the fifth-grade
teaching position during the 2017-2018
school year and has remained there
ever since. She said that her previous
experience working on the support staff
at NES strategically prepared her for the
challenges of running her own classroom.
"It gave me a better appreciation for
the way I teach in general because I am
always thinking about how I want to teach
[the lessons] the way it says in the book,"
Bethany noted. "But I know that some of
my kids aren't going to [understand] it
that way. So, I always have in mind that
I generally help plan it so it can help the
other kids."
Bethany added that she loves being a part
of the tight-knit community at Naples
Elementary and appreciates the respect
and support she receives from all the
other teachers and staff.
"It's like a family," Bethany added. "Naples
is really like a family."

Student in the spotlight
MIA BLACKMORE
SENIOR
by CHRISTIAN WEANER
If one were to look back at the rosters of the
successful girls' sports teams at Bonners
Ferry High School (BFHS), the National
Honor Society member list or Distinguished
Young Women (DYW) competitors from the
last several years, one name would be a common
denominator: Mia Blackmore.
A senior this year, Mia's athletic and academic
accomplishments over her high school career
have been plentiful. But for her, those awards and
achievements are not what is most important,
nor are they the reason why she is so involved in
the school and community.
"I love the opportunity to hang out with friends
and have something to work for, whether it be
a skill or relationship," Mia explained. "I enjoy
being active [and] I love the dynamic of the sport
and team," adding, "It's always enjoyable to win
the game.
And Mia has done plenty of winning.
Throughout her time at BFHS, Mia has starred
as a midfielder on the soccer team, a point guard
in basketball, a sprinter and hurdler in track and
field, and a golfer.
In all these activities, her biggest impact has been
as a team captain and vocal leader, encouraging
her teammates to get better each day.
"I feel like I have grown influentially and as a
leader," Mia said. "My skills in all of my sports
have improved so much."
Mia attributes her growth and success to the
numerous coaches and teachers who have
developed relationships with her and pushed
her to get better. But no one has been more
encouraging, according to Mia, than her mom
and dad.
"I feel like my parents have influenced me the
most because they always push me to work to do
better and enjoy watching my growth," Mia said.
Aside from sports and school, Mia loves creative
outlets like bracelet making and painting. She
also enjoys spending time with friends and
family and taking in the picturesque scenery of
North Idaho.
"I love the beautiful seasons that Bonners Ferry
offers and the pleasant greenery and mountains,"
Mia said.
She earned All-League recognition this past fall
in soccer, won first place in the 100-meter hurdles
at numerous track meets, helped the Badger
girls' golf team capture a 3A State Championship
in 2021 and finished second runner-up in DYW
last spring.

A Festive Evening of
FUN AND
FUNDRAISING
Festival of Hearts returns in person
26 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL january/february 2023
The Fry Healthcare Foundation is excited to announce
that the 2023 Festival of Hearts, a fun and festive
fundraiser for Boundary Community Hospital, is
returning in person!
“We are most excited to talk to our community in person about
all the exciting possibilities we are working on at Boundary
Community Hospital,” smiles Danielle Larsson, Fry Healthcare
Foundation coordinator.
A maximum of 110 tickets (priced $75 per person) will be sold
for the event, which will take place Saturday, February 11, at
the Kootenai River Inn. Attendees to the Festival of Hearts will
be treated to a cocktail hour and entertainment beginning at
5:30pm, followed by a wonderful dinner at 6pm prepared by the
chefs of the Kootenai River Inn. The menu features a salad and
sorbet appetizer, followed by a dinner of prime rib or chicken
with side choices of potatoes, rice and mixed vegetables. The
auction kicks off at 7:15pm, immediately followed by the
dessert dash.
As of press time, they were still working on securing some great
auction items for attendees to bid on, and they are looking to
have five to 10 auction items at this year’s event. Individual
persons or businesses that would like to donate an auction item
can contact Danielle at 208.267.6912 or Danielle.L@bcch.org.
The always exciting dessert dash, featuring delicious specialty
desserts, is made possible by the generous—and talented—
members and businesses in the community. Those interested in
supplying a dessert can reach out to Danielle as well.
Danielle encourages the community to join in this truly
special event. “Festival of Hearts is an excellent way to connect
with our community and talk about how we are meeting the
community's needs and how they can help support the FHF in

that mission,” she shares. “The pandemic highlighted the importance of rural
hospitals like ours; there were several points during the pandemic when transfers
were made extremely difficult due to a lack of available rooms at other facilities,
which has continued past the pandemic. Boundary Community Hospital has
strived to increase the level of care we can provide to ensure that our community
is receiving excellent care despite transfer difficulties. Expanding our service
lines and abilities comes with more vast equipment needs.”
In December, FHF hosted its Festival of Trees, with a goal to raise the
remaining $19,000 needed to go toward two new Stryker defibrillators for
Boundary Community Hospital’s AC/ED; the proceeds from their 2022 Golf
Tournament raised the initial funds to help fund the defibrillators. As they
have yet to meet their goal, the fund an item for this year's Festival of Hearts
will be the defibrillators. "And if we complete that goal, we will move to fund
new monitors for the AC unit," says Danielle. Last year’s Festival of Hearts and
Cornhole Tournament successfully funded BCH’s new Procedural Care Clinic
(BoundaryCommunityHospital.org/procedural-care-clinic).
Fry Healthcare Foundation’s annual fundraisers play an important role in helping
secure funding needed to help keep our hospital thriving and our community
healthy. Show your support today by purchasing your ticket to this year’s Festival
of Hearts, or by donating an auction item or dessert.
“Thank you to our community for continuing to support the Fry Healthcare
Foundation!” says Danielle.

PLACES TO EXPLORE
AND THINGS TO DO
In and Around Bonners Ferry
My Boundary County (and beyond)
bucket list for 2023
by CHRISTIAN WEANER
During my first trip to North Idaho several years ago, my
wife wrote out a "bucket list" of places to show me and
things to do while I was visiting her family in Bonners
Ferry. I loved every second of that trip, as we hiked
many of the nearby trails, swam in the lakes and tried
many favorite local eateries.
Now, as we begin a new year, it is my privilege to pass along my own
bucket list of sorts. Here are my recommendations for some places to
explore and things to try in 2023.
1. UNDER THE SUN
I can still remember my wife raving about this sweet little shop in her
hometown, where she used to meet up with friends to drink coffee and
work on homework.
As I have personally come to know, the ambiance at Under the Sun
is truly unmatched. Whether you are shopping for some quant house
décor or a gift for a friend, or want to enjoy a delicious sandwich and
some coffee while you get some work done, Under the Sun is the place
for you.
2. TWO TONE’S CAFÉ
Two Tones Café has been voted as one of Bonners Ferry's finest
restaurants several times, and for good reason.
With a newly expanded menu full of great options like authentic Italian
food or filet mignon, Two Tone’s will not disappoint. The cozy indoor
dining room provides a relaxing atmosphere year-round, but the best
time to visit might be the summertime, when you can sit outside on the
patio, listen to live music and enjoy some good eats.
My personal recommendation: try the Pan Asian nachos—you will not
regret it!
3. KOOTENAI WILDLIFE REFUGE
Nestled on nearly 3,000 acres of land next to the Selkirk Mountains
west of town, the Kootenai Wildlife Refuge offers the opportunity
to take in the beauty of Boundary County and spot some of the 300
species of wildlife that inhabit the area.
This spring, consider taking the family out for a drive around the scenic
auto tour, or go for a short walk to the Myrtle Creek Falls.
4. KOOTENAI FALLS SWINGING BRIDGE
Just a 45-minute drive from downtown Bonners Ferry, taking a trip
over to Montana to see the Kootenai Falls Swinging Bridge will be well
worth your time.
The falls and swinging bridge offer a unique experience and view of the
Kootenai River that is quite incredible.
30 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL january/february 2023
5. CRESTON, CRANBROOK AND THE CANADIAN ROCKIES
Another must-do activity driving on the Selkirk Loop to explore
British Columbia and beyond.
Now that many of the COVID-19 restrictions have loosened up, grab
your passport and head north.
If you make a daytrip, I recommend stopping off in Creston or
Cranbrook for an early lunch before continuing up into the Canadian
Rockies for the afternoon.
6. CLIFTY, BURTON, ROMAN NOSE, CHIMNEY ROCK—OR
ALL OF THE ABOVE!
While the Canadian Rockies cannot be topped, Boundary County has
plenty of exciting hikes and incredible mountaintop views to offer.
Once the snow melts this summer, lace up those old hiking boots and
head up the mountain for one of the many hikes in the area.
Pro tip: Download the AllTrails app to get directions and read about
the distance and difficulty of each hike before you set out.
7. COPPER FALLS
Whether you are on your way up to Canada or are looking for a short
but fun afternoon hike, be sure to check out Copper Falls this year.
8. EILEEN DAM
If you love Geocaching or want to go for a swim on a hot summer day,
look no further than Eileen Dam over in Moyie Springs.
This is another short hike that offers plenty of opportunities to explore
the old dam and take a dip in the Moyie River.
9. THE GATHERING PLACE
As its website boasts, The Gathering Place truly has "something for
everyone." Complete with a bakery, farm-to-table country grocery
store, coffee shop and produce stand, you will not be disappointed
by a wide selection ranging from high-quality produce to fresh baked
pastries straight from the oven to your table.
10. BONNERS FERRY FARMERS MARKET
A great way to meet people and purchase quality, homemade goods
and foods is to visit the weekly Bonners Ferry Farmers Market.
The market is open every Saturday in the downtown City Parking Lot
from 8am to 1pm, beginning the last weekend of April and running
through the first weekend of October.
Make 2023 a year of adventure, and explore all that our beautiful area
has to offer.
The Copper Falls trail is a simple 1.4-mile loop that offers a jawdropping
view of the 150-foot waterfall that you will not soon forget.

NORTHWEST WINERIES AND VINEYARDS MAKE THE

Everything you could ever want ...
A
s they begin to plan, one of the
initial decisions that every couple
must make is where to hold the
ceremony and reception. With an abundance
of venues and options to choose from, any
newlywed will recall that this process can
make your head spin.
While every location has its positives and
negatives, one type of non-traditional venue
that might just be the least stressful—yet
most elegant—place to hold a wedding is
one of the picturesque wineries or vineyards
located right here in the Northwest. And
here is why.
Jaw-Dropping Scenery and Abundant
Natural Light
One thing is for sure, if you choose to hold
your wedding at a winery or vineyard, your
photographer will thank you.
Couples often spend copious amounts of
time decorating every inch of their wedding
venue to try and hide any areas that might be
less than picture friendly. But at a vineyard,
the scenery will speak for itself.
With ambient rays of sunshine in every
direction, rolling hills of grape vines and
charming architecture, you will not be
disappointed by the backdrop of your
wedding photos.
“A vineyard is the perfect setting for a
summertime wedding,” Olalla Vineyard
& Winery’s website states. “The natural
backdrop of our wine grapes along with our
beautiful gardens makes for stunning photos
and memories that you and your guests will
treasure for a lifetime.”
Olalla Vineyard & Winery, located along
the shores of the Puget Sound in Olalla,
Washington, is one of the Northwest’s many
wineries that could make the perfect setting
for your special day.
Great views and radiant sunshine leads to
awesome wedding pictures and memories
you will never forget.

wineries and vineyards. No need to stress over coordinating your ceremony and reception at separate locations
when you can have everything you desire without ever needing to leave the vineyard grounds.
Most wineries that host weddings have built-in packages to choose from that include everything from a day-of
coordinator and catering options to security personnel and guest transportation.
Many vineyards can easily accommodate large numbers of people and provide recommendations for nearby
hotel block packages and any other details that you would otherwise need to figure out on your own during the
planning process.
A perfect example of the versatile nature of a winery wedding venue is Spokane’s Arbor Crest Wine Cellars,
which assists couples with every detail of the planning process to help make their wedding day go as smoothly
as possible.
A wedding in wine country will not only provide an alluring wedding day, but it will help streamline the planning
process to take the weight off the bride’s shoulders while simultaneously giving guests a memorable getaway
experience that they will not soon forget.

A TALE AS OLD AS TIME
Indoor and Outdoor Spaces
Brides often fantasize about outdoor weddings with eye-popping
floral displays and dazzling views of nature as they walk down the
aisle. However, planning events outside always comes with the
inherent risk of bad weather messing things up.
Fortunately, wineries and vineyards are perfect venues to host
weddings thanks to their ability to hold ceremonies and receptions
at numerous locations, including indoor options for when Mother
Nature decides not to cooperate.
With large tasting rooms, warehouses and bottling facilities onsite,
wineries can quickly pivot to move your special day indoors
while still allowing for the elegant look that every bride hopes for.
Plus, if you are okay with getting a little wet, you can still grab
that white umbrella and pop outside for some incredible photo
opportunities around the vineyard or winery grounds.
Located in downtown Spokane, a unique wedding venue that
provides adaptable outdoor and indoor spaces for your big day is
Barrister Winery.
Barrister offers a breathtaking urban garden courtyard for outdoor
ceremonies while also providing access to the winery’s historic
brick and timber building that will blow your guests away.
While you cannot change what the weather will look like on
your wedding day, you can decide to hold your special event at a
location that gives you peace of mind, knowing that your day will
be as meaningful and magnificent as you always dreamed it would
be, rain or shine.
The Obvious One: Great Wine Selections (and Good Food!)
Finally, and arguably most importantly, one of the biggest reasons
to hold your wedding at a winery or vineyard is the extensive
selection of wines—grown, pressed and bottled on-site—that are
available for you and your guests. Oh, and not to mention that
wineries are known for their fantastic catering options as well.
While good wine is a given, what you may not realize is that
wineries have a solid reputation for their farm-to-table food
options that will pair nicely with your wine selections and impress
even the most prestigious of your wedding guests.
Also, many wineries provide the bride and groom with the
opportunity to taste test their wines ahead of time and pick out
what they would like served on their big day.
One Washington winery known for providing excellent food and
wine selections is Karma Vineyards in Chelan. Not only does
Karma have eye-popping views of the Chelan River, which adjoins
their spacious vineyards, but it also offers an added experience that
will give the bride and groom a memory to last a lifetime—custom
sparkling wine bottles to commemorate the big day.
Whether you are a wine connoisseur or a casual sipper, a winery
such as Karma Vineyards could be the ideal location for your
special day.
And lucky for you, because the Northwest is dotted with wellrespected
wineries and vineyards that can make your wedding
dreams come true.

Simple lifestyle strategies to boost
your health in the new year
by Taylor Shillam
42 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL january/february 2023
I
f you’re looking to make a health-related lifestyle
change in 2023, it could be time to think outside the
box and allow your New Year’s resolutions to evolve.
It’s no secret that the start of a new year is a perfect time
to revamp your wellness routine. Once the holiday buzz
has settled down, the opportunity to take a breath and
reset your habits for the year ahead arrives.
While overhauling a nutrition and fitness routine is often
at the forefront of health-based goals for a new year,
maybe 2023 is the year that sees you add something more
to that list: elements of mental health support, building
community, and small, simple lifestyle habits that can add
up to a major life change.
Start with these easy-to-implement
habits and strategies to level up your
commitment to health in 2023:
Make time for digital detoxes. If you
feel exhausted by the pull of constant
screen time, responding to messages,
and checking social media, making the
conscious choice to regularly “unplug”
this year could be highly beneficial for
you. Disconnecting from technology
and social media is a welcome form of
self-care for many, and it doesn’t have
to be extreme.
Start by turning off notifications or
implementing your phone’s “do not
disturb” function for a set amount of
time each day. Start small and progress
to an amount of daily digital detox
that works best for you. Taking some
technology-free time at night to wind
down before bed is also known to
be highly beneficial—set your goal
time and stick to it for putting away
your devices.
Allowing yourself to release the
constant availability and stimulation
that comes with being very active
on your phone, on apps and across
social media can help you set
healthy communication boundaries
and stay present in the current
(off-screen) moment.
Find your fitness community. Have
fitness goals for 2023? Take them a step
further by embracing what can be one
of the best added benefits of adopting a fitness routine:
community. With group fitness and studio workouts
in full swing, it’s a perfect time to take advantage of
opportunities to both get your sweat on—and join a
healthy new community.
Chances are, you’ll find a fun group or accountability
partner who will keep you motivated to show up. Whether
it’s trying a new fitness class or joining a running club,
challenge yourself to break into a more social sweat scene
this year.

Incorporate small doses of movement. Physical fitness doesn’t necessarily
all come from a gym, or from a single workout session in the day. More often,
fitness is being considered an all-day practice, and breaking up an exercise
routine into bites of movement throughout the day can be just as effective.
Along with smaller bites of movement throughout the day come smaller
rushes of energy and endorphins—those after-effects of exercise that provide
a healthy, addictive rush.
It’s likely you’ll find enjoyment from small doses of mood-boosting
movement that you can do at your convenience, such as taking a short walk
at lunch time, standing for a few minutes every hour, taking the stairs, or
incorporating brief workout sessions during the day. It’s also likely you’ll feel
less pressure to get your workout in, if your schedule doesn’t always allow a
long stretch of time to dedicate to fitness.
Treat yourself at home. Boost your mood and your outward glow with
at-home skin care. Self-care certainly includes caring for your skin, and
preserving your youthful glow can be as easy or as advanced as you make it.
Whether it’s adopting a completely new, targeted skin-care regimen this year,
or simply starting with a relaxing face mask during the week, it’s likely to
boost both your mood and confidence to pay more attention to your beauty
routine. And with more innovative beauty products constantly hitting the
market, it’s easier to have spa-quality treatments for less, all within the
comfort of your own home.
Practice expressing gratitude. Experts have found an association between
expressing gratitude and improved feelings of happiness, better sleep, and
more manageable levels of stress and anxiety. Working to maintain an
attitude of gratitude and joy, even in the smallest ways, can help balance your
mental health. A quick tip: Keep a gratitude journal and use it to take note of
at least one item you’re grateful for each day.
Get outside. The benefits of time spent outdoors each day (for no matter
how long) are undeniable. Making time to go outside at some point of your
day to soak up some natural light can do wonders for stabilizing your mood
and energy levels throughout the day. The real challenge? Implementing
outdoor time daily, regardless of weather. Even when it’s cold in the early
months of the year, challenge yourself to make a habit of getting outdoors
each day, even if it’s for a quick step and a few deep breaths outside.
Add nutrition (don’t subtract). To boost your nutritional health for the
long-term future, focus on adding nutrients, rather than giving up the
foods you enjoy. Adding healthier foods to your diet releases the feeling of
deprivation and allows you more freedom to choose. Start your nutrition
cleanup by focusing on implementing more colorful produce to your plate,
rather than subtracting from it. The nutrients and fiber within these natural
foods will likely leave you feeling fuller and more satisfied, while leaving less
room for indulgences.

Gratitude
HEALTHY TIP
A year to be thankful
Did you know that focusing on the positive things in your
life may benefit your mental and physical health?
Each day, make the time to express at least one thing you
are grateful for—this can be something from your past, the present,
or optimism for the future. It can be as simple as recognizing the
sun is shining and the warmth it provides. Appreciating time
in the kitchen cooking a meal with your kids, focusing on
the laughter, not the mess. Despite the stress of your job,
acknowledging your talents and strengths.
As a new year is upon us, purchase a special
journal, or start a document on your computer
or phone, and pen or type one gratitude entry
(or more) each and every day. Be sure to date
the entry as well.
Whenever you are overwhelmed, or
negative thoughts and feelings are
taking control, read some of your
entries. They’re sure to remind
you that there is much to be
grateful for.
It’s time to live a life
of gratitude.

Quality Care Close to Home
Importance of critical access hospitals to rural communities
by DANIELLE LARSSON, BOUNDARY COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
Bonners Ferry is nestled among the beautiful Selkirk,
Purcell and Cabinet mountain ranges, creating our rural
oasis. Being in a rural setting is what most love about our
community, but it can come with challenges. Residents of
rural areas typically face barriers to accessing health-care services,
including traveling long distances to seek care. According to the
Idaho Department of Labor, 88 percent of Idaho’s population is
considered rural. However, there are only 54 hospitals; 27 are Critical
Access Hospitals (CAHs) in our approximately 83,000 square miles
of land. CAHs greatly benefit our community by improving access
to quality health care in our rural communities.
We are one of the fortunate communities self-contained with
all our essential needs; food, housing, education, and medical
care available without requiring extensive travel, integral during
inclement weather. Boundary Community Hospital (BCH) was the
first Pacific Northwest hospital to receive Critical Access Hospital
designation by the federal government. Critical Access Hospitals
and Rural Health Care Clinics like BCH and Boundary Community
Clinics (BCC) provide vital services in rural areas such as ours here
in Boundary County.
Critical Access Hospitals are aptly named; during time-sensitive
emergencies such as heart attack or stroke, every second is vital for
the patient’s outcome. CAHs provide essential lifesaving care close
to home and bridge any gap in care between rural communities
and cities. Time-sensitive emergencies are medical conditions
that expeditious treatment can make an advantageous difference
in the eventual outcome for a patient. In these circumstances, the
faster patients receive medical attention, the better their chances of
survival. Additionally, receiving treatment quickly can also lower
the risk of permanent disability.
Depending on the patient’s situation, they may be stabilized at a
CAH and then transferred to a higher level of care; stabilizing the
patient before transfer saves precious time and can significantly
improve the chances of a favorable outcome. Transferring to a higher
level of care is not always necessary or possible; in recent years, we
have experienced larger hospitals at maximum capacity that cannot
take on more patients, further necessitating our CAHs.
Patients may be stabilized and admitted to BCH if their level of
care is appropriate or if another facility is unavailable. Physicians
will assess the need for a higher level of care depending on several
factors unique to each situation.
Top Time-Sensitive Emergencies (this list is not exhaustive):
• Cardiac Arrest
• Heart Attack - “Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States
has a heart attack.” - Heart.org
• Deep Vein Thrombosis/Blood Clot
• Heart Arrhythmia
• Stroke
• Severe Trauma: i.e., brain injury, chest injury, profuse bleeding
• Appendicitis
• Intestinal Obstruction
As much as we never want a medical emergency to happen to
ourselves or a loved one, it is essential to know what to do and
where to go if the time comes. In an emergency, you should call
911; the EMTs will contact the hospital to let them know the vital
information and status of the patient they are bringing in.
BCH is more than just a Critical Access Hospital; we strive to bring
needed medical services to our community to help improve access
to quality health care. A host of support services include 24-hour
emergency services, med/surg floor, cardiopulmonary, laboratory,
radiology, 3D mammography, CT, MRI, 4D ultrasound, surgery,
physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, procedural
care clinic, rural health clinic, and the extended care facility. BCH
also provides accommodations for visiting specialty physicians in
cardiology, orthopedics, general surgery and women’s health. All
of these services provide access for our local community to receive
quality care close to home.

VICTORIA,

The Old-World charm of Victoria, British Columbia, is the perfect setting for a romantic getaway.
The Coast Salish First Nations Peoples settled the area with communities up and down the
coast. Named for Queen Victoria, it is the capital city of British Columbia and was founded in
1843 as a British settlement. Over the years it has become a popular tourist destination and is
inundated with crowds during cruise ship season. In the winter months, crowds dwindle, making this low
season the perfect time of year to visit. Just 62 miles from Seattle, Washington, you can travel by airplane
from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, seaplane, or the Victoria Clipper fast ferry. It is just 25
miles from Port Angeles, Washington, on the Blackball Ferry.
Known as the “Garden City,” Victoria is an easily walkable city with a section of Government Street
transformed into a pedestrian-priority zone. Completed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the zone
includes picnic tables, seating, planters, and artwork installations featuring local talent.

STAY
If romance is the goal, there is only one choice: the iconic
Fairmont Empress. This stately building dominates the inner
harbor front and has been a favorite of visitors since its
founding in 1908. If you can swing it, book a harbor front suite
on the Fairmont Gold Floor, which is like a small boutique hotel
amid the larger hotel. It gives you the best of both worlds, a
separate check-in desk, concierge, and the use of the elegant
Fairmont Lounge, while still having use of the larger hotel’s
restaurants, shops, fitness center, pool, and the luxurious Willow
Stream Spa.
When splurging on a luxury hotel, take time to enjoy all the
amenities. The Fairmont Gold Lounge is a fabulous perk. Enjoy
a scrumptious breakfast buffet each morning with delectable
hot and cold dishes as well as some of the best croissants in
North America. Enjoy great coffees from a high-end machine.
In the afternoon, pop back in for the Fairmont Empress’ famed
scones and Lot35 Tea, Fairmont’s proprietary brand sourced
from premium ingredients. Evening offers appetizers and an
honor bar for cocktails. Late evening, pop in for dessert. The
outdoor veranda is open, weather permitting. Keep warm with
outdoor fire pits and blankets while watching a romantic sunset
over the harbor.

Tours regularly include sightings of harbor seals, elephant
seals, and Steller and California sea lions.
The Willow Stream Spa at the Fairmont Empress is a lovely
oasis to enjoy some couple’s time. Conde Nast Traveler ranks it
as one of the top spas in Canada. Book a variety of treatments
