God on the side of the poor
The last church I served in was located at St Lukes, on the northside of Cork.
Outsiders thought St Lukes was a well-off area, close to Montenotte and all
that. I noticed great irony at its post office. Over the door was given its location
St Luke's Cross in English, but Crossaire na mBocht in Irish (the
crossroads of the poor).
St Luke himself would surely have approved. The writer of the third gospel
always paid great attention in his writings to people on the margins. As well
as the poor, his gospel is full of the joy of salvation and the mercy of God.
Only in Lukes gospel is found the story of the Prodigal Son, the Good Samaritan
and the Dying Thief.
St Lukes Gospel will be read at Sunday Mass all this year. Listen to it well,
see things through St Lukes eyes. Bring the Mass leaflet home with you and
read over the Gospel afterwards. Or follow it in your own bible at home.
You will see there that God is on your side, loving and forgiving you.
