FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
RECREATION & CULTURE PROGRAMS
The City of Revelstoke Parks, Recreation & Culture Department believes that every child should have
the opportunity to enjoy and play sports. Research shows that participation in recreation improves
health, life skills, teamwork, socialization and goal setting in children and youth. We want to make sure
you know about the opportunities available to ensure all children have access to recreation and cultural
activities.
C.O.R. Recreation Passes
The City of Revelstoke, through Council
support, offers free annual recreation passes
and 50% subsidy on certain recreation
programs to low Income residents. Look for
the above heart logo labelled on programs that
qualify for this assistance.
Revelstoke’s Youth Access Fund
This fund was established to ensure all youth
have equal opportunity to participate in
sports, recreation, arts and culture programs,
events and activities. The YA fund was
designed to help remove financial barriers
(including registration fees, equipment,
transportation and other costs associated
with participation) for youth from low and
modest income families to participate in
activities that they would otherwise
not be able to.
KidSport BC
The KidSport concept was hatched in 1993 by board
and staff at Sport BC as a way to help address the
challenges faced by many families when registering
their children in organized sport. Their mission is to
remove financial barriers that prevent children from
playing organized sports! Check online for more
information and how to apply.
Please contact Community Connections to
determine your eligibility.

JumpStart
Jumpstart gives kids a sporting chance.
Participating in sport not only helps the physical
and social well-being, but helps build self-esteem.
By helping kids get into the game, we are
equipping them with determination.
This confidence goes beyond practices and
games. No kid should be left on the side lines but
in Canada 1 in 3 families cannot afford to enroll
their kids in organized sports. Jumpstart is here to
help.
Families requiring assistance need to fill out the
application before the fees are due, as money
goes directly to the organization. Applications can
be submitted from January 1 - November 1.
Check online for application forms and more
information or call: 1-844-YES-PLAY.

Lap Swimming Etiquette 101
Swimmers arriving at a pool should do three things before entering the water:
1. Make note of lane signage (Fast, Medium, Slow, Closed, etc.)
2. Spend a few minutes observing and roughly timing the pace of swimmers already in the pool.
3. Select a lane containing swimmers moving as closely as possible to the pace that one realistically
expects to swim throughout his or her entire workout.
Once you choose a lane, carefully check the position and speed of other swimmers before entering,
preferably to one side of the lane. Incumbent swimmers have an initial right of way and may need a lap or
two to adjust to your presence.
During a swim, swimmers should observe and respect the pace and workout routines of other swimmers
in their lane by:
1. Staying constantly aware of other swimmers’ presence (e.g. Move up a lane if you are constantly
passing swimmers or down a lane if you are constantly being passed).
2. Explicitly informing other swimmers of your intentions (e.g. Gently but distinctly touch the feet of a
swimmer before you pass them. If you get touched, continue to the wall then stop in the corner to let
the faster swimmer pass).
3. Knowing the common lap swimming etiquette (e.g. Allow swimmers doing faster strokes to swim
ahead).
4. Applying common sense at all times (e.g. Share the space as best you can… no one has a right to
“own” a lane indefinitely or insist on their on idiosyncratic rules.)
The nature of lap swimming is incredibly dynamic and can change many times throughout a single
workout. When in doubt, communicate with people in your lane and, if all else fails, ask the lifeguard. It is
not the role of a lifeguard to constantly “police” the lanes, but they are happy to answer questions about
common conventions and provide suggestions for possible solutions.
Happy Swimming!
CHILDREN MUST BE
42" TALL TO USE THE

The Lifesaving Society Swim for Life® program is a comprehensive swim lesson program that
focuses on the development of fundamental swim strokes and skills for learners of all ages and
abilities. Instructors ensure swimmers get lots of in-water practice in every lesson. Swim for Life
includes fun, hands on activities that focus on teaching Water Smart education for the whole
family. Lessons that will last a lifetime!
Parent & Tot Program Overview
Recommended age: 4 months to 3 years old. The Lifesaving Society Parent & Tot lessons structure
in-water interaction between parent and child to stress the importance of play in developing
water-positive attitudes and skills. Activities and progressions are based on child development allowing
parents to register in the level appropriate for their child’s age: 4-12 months, 12-24 months, or 2-3
years.
During this program, one parent or caregiver will be required to be
in the water with the tot (one-to-one ratio).
Parent & Tot 1 – Jellyfish (previously Starfish)
Recommended age: 4-12 months. Parent & Tot 1 provides an orientation to
water for infants and their parent/caregiver. Parents/caregivers will learn how to
swim safely with their infant in the pool through instruction of holds and
supports. Infants will be introduced to getting their face wet, blowing bubbles
and floating with the help of their caregiver.
Parent & Tot 2 – Goldfish (previously Duck)
Recommended age: 12-24 months. Parent & Tot 2 teaches toddlers how to play
in the water safely! They’ll learn how to enter and exit the water with help from
their parent/caregiver and will play games to encourage them to get their face
wet and blow bubbles in the water. Toddlers will also develop floating and kicking
skills with the support of their parent/caregiver.
Parent & Tot 3 – Seahorse (previously Sea Turtle)
Recommended age: 2-3 years. Parent & Tot 3 teaches toddlers how to safely
enter the water wearing a PFD. They’ll develop underwater skills such as
submersion and opening their eyes underwater. ‘Starfish’ floats, ‘pencil’ floats
and kicking skills are taught using songs and games.
Parks, Recreation and Culture - Leisure Guide - Winter 2023 | 250-837-9351 | prc@revelstoke.ca | www.revelstoke.ca | 22
Preschool Program Overview
Recommended age: 3 to 5 years. Give your child a head start on learning to swim! The Lifesaving Society
Preschool lessons develop an appreciation and healthy respect for the water before they get in too
deep. With a progression-based approach, instructors work to ensure 3-5 year olds become comfortable
in the water and have fun while developing a foundation of water skills. Water Smart education is
included in all Preschool levels.
During this program, one parent or caregiver will be required to be on deck (not in the water)
to assist with their child(ren) if necessary.
Preschool 1 – Octopus (previously Sea Otter)
Recommended age: 3-5 years. Preschool 1 is a transitional level which transfers the
preschooler to the care of the instructor. Preschoolers will have fun learning to get
in and out of the water. They’ll learn how to put their face in the water, blow
bubbles in the water, and how to float and glide.
Preschool 2 – Crab (previously Salamander)
Recommended: Completed Preschool 1. Preschool 2 teaches preschoolers how to
safely jump into chest-deep water and how to swim wearing a lifejacket (PFD).
They’ll learn submersion skills and continue to work on floats, glides, and kicking
with buoyant objects.
Preschool 3 – Orca (previously Sunfish)
Recommended: Completed Preschool 2. Preschool 3 teaches preschoolers how to
enter deep water safely wearing a PFD. They’ll learn how to submerge and exhale
underwater, retrieve objects underwater, and will continue developing their
floating, gliding and kicking skills.
Preschool 4 – Sea Lion (previously Crocodile)
Recommended: Completed Preschool 3. Preschool 4 teaches deep-water entries
and treading water wearing a PFD. Preschoolers will become skilled at retrieving
objects from the bottom of the pool in chest-deep water and performing front and
side glide. Front crawl wearing a PFD is also introduced.
Preschool 5 – Narwhal (previously Whale)
Recommended: Completed Preschool 4. Preschool 5 teaches Swim to Survive® skills
wearing a PFD. Front crawl and back crawl are introduced as well as interval fitness
training. Preschoolers will also learn how to tread water and perform vertical whip
kick (flutter kick) with a buoyant aid. Once complete, preschoolers can register into
Swimmer 2.
DISCLAIMER:
Children must be enrolled in the correct class for their ability. If you are unsure of your child’s swim
level, bring them in for a free swim assessment prior to registration.
The assessment can be arranged during any public swim session.
If your child has been incorrectly enrolled, we reserve the right to withdraw them.

Swimmer Program Overview
Recommended age: 5 to 12 years. The Lifesaving Society’s Swimmer program makes sure your children
learn how to swim before they get in too deep. Each level challenges school-aged children to develop
safe entries, deep water support, underwater skills, and swimming strokes. Kids learn healthy habits by
getting and staying fit in the water. Swimmer levels include fun, hands-on activities that focus on
teaching water safety.
During this program, parents or caregivers with children under 7 years old will be required to
be on deck (not in the water) to assist with their child(ren) if necessary.
