Alzheimer’s Awareness Month
Jana Schulz is a caregiver to her father Roy, who lives with
dementia. Along with many others across the province, she’s
participating in the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s Alzheimer’s
Awareness Month in January. The campaign aims to flip the
script on stigma associated with Alzheimer’s disease and
dementia.
The campaign shares tips and tools to support living with
dementia, while highlighting amazing individuals on the
dementia journey who continue to find moments of joy, peace
and happiness.
Schulz is a registered social worker working as a regional
dementia education coordinator in the Kootenays. She’s also
an elected official within the Metis Nation of B.C.
During her journey, she has shared the caregiving role with
her mother and leaned more into her culture. She takes comfort
knowing that Roy’s journey is bringing him closer to their
ancestors and she’s brought an Indigenous perspective to the
disease to help create a better environment for Roy and others.
Through it all she’s found unexpected gratitude and joy.
“It’s important not to lose yourself on the caregiving journey,”
she says. “Despite all the challenges we’ve faced with the
disease, there are so many moments that help shield me from
immense amounts of grief. I don’t take those moments for
granted.”
During Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, the Alzheimer Society
of B.C. encourages residents to visit alzbc.org/FullOfLife to
find resources, tips, tools and support.
First female Captain within the KBRFR
“I love firefighting,” says Carlene Pires who has become
the first-ever female Captain within the Kootenay Boundary
Regional Fire Rescue Service (KBRFR). “I just so happen to be
a woman too,” she adds.
Carlene is proud of her paid-on-call (POC) job as well as
the determination and accomplishments that have engineered
her rise to the top. She hopes that any publicity generated
will encourage more aspiring firefighters, regardless of age or
gender, to join the service during the KBRFR’s annual spring
recruitment drive.
Her promotion to the rank of Captain, an historic milestone
for the KBRFR, was based solely on merit. The accolade
was also awarded to fellow crew member David Flanagan.
Together, the pair will ensure a seamless succession at Station
372 Warfield is secured and a strong chain of command is
already entrenched when Captain Ron Gattafoni retires in a
couple of years.
“Carlene embraces the work ethic, values, passion and critical
thinking that the role demands and her appointment will
sustain our fire service’s continuity long term. Her remarkable
leadership qualities, curiosity for continual growth and commitment
to training, all gained whilst balancing a full-time job
has been impressive,” says Deputy Chief Gallamore. “Having
each developed a unique skill set, all our captains are up to
the task, provide a source of inspiration for new recruits and
have the ability to strengthen an already tight-knit crew and
community,” he adds.
Firefighting is in Carlene’s DNA. Her grandfather was a
career firefighter with Nanaimo Fire Rescue and she spent
much of her youth, and his retirement, with his firehall family
- attending events, visiting former crew members as well as the
Saturday night dinners, card games and camaraderie which
she remembers the most.
Carlene’s journey into firefighting began as a new recruit in
the fall of 2015 as a POC Firefighter and was underlined by
“wanting to be part of something bigger than myself, to serve
others and help people in my community in their greatest time
of need”. In 2019 she was promoted to a POC Lieutenant and
her sheer hard work, dedication, perseverance and love of the
job has been the cornerstone to her success.
During the last seven years as a POC Firefighter, she has
gained Provincial wildfire deployment experience and a rack
of certifications including Full-Service Firefighter Operations
(NFPA 1001) and Fire Officer 1. The demands of the role have
also been balanced with careers in the Financial industry
and within the Emergency Management Department of the
Regional District of Kootenay Boundary where she has been
its Emergency Program Coordinator since March 2021.
“I love my job and am thankful for all the strong, trailblazing
women who have come before me as well as the fantastic
peer support and mentorship I continue to benefit from. If my
appointment encourages more girls and ladies to consider the
fire service as a Career, Paid-On-Call or Volunteer firefighter
that would be amazing. It’s such a rewarding move to make,”
Kootenay Lake Levels
January 4, 2023
For the benefit of Kootenay Lake area residents,
the following lake levels are provided by FortisBC
as a public service.
Queen’s Bay: Present level: 1743.81 ft
7 day forecast: Down 8-10 inches
2022 peak 1751.61 ft. / 2021 peak 1747.33 ft.
Nelson:
Present level: 1743.58 ft
7 day forecast: Down 5-7 inches
says Carlene who is a member of Fire Service Women BC
(fswbc.ca) and sits on the planning committee for Camp Ignite
– Kootenay Division, a youth firefighting mentorship program
for grade 11 & 12 girls living in Southeast BC. The four day
overnight summer camp (campignite.com), will be coming
to our region for the first time in July 2023 to empower local
young women to follow their dreams and introduce them to
the exciting world of firefighting.
Even though the KBRFR is a progressive and inclusive
organisation committed to gender diversity, the lack of
women amongst the ranks is representative of firefighting at
large. Less than 5% of Canada’s firefighters are women. Many
think they lack the strength, height or fitness credentials to
make it but that’s simply not the reality. Recruits are trained to
use technique, equipment and teamwork to overcome any lack
of physical stature and size.
“Positive change within the fire service is a constant. We
all work so hard to leave the profession a better place than
when we first started. We’re breaking down barriers, talking
about trauma, removing stigmas, focusing on fire prevention
and receiving robust mental health support and training. It’s
a great time to join such a unique, challenging and fulfilling
career!” adds Carlene.
Hospice Navigator Program
Following the closure of the
Kalein Centre (Nelson), The
Greater Trail Hospice Society
(GTHS) is taking its Navigator
program into the West
Kootenay region, delivering
more under its umbrella of
services and expanding its
reach to serve Nelson, Salmo,
Nakusp and the Slocan Valley.
The Navigator Program,
which has been an active Kalein
program since 2019, matches
specially trained Hospice Volunteers
with clients who are
living with a life limiting diagnosis.
Each volunteer helps the
client “navigate” the medical
system, finds resources to keep
them connected to their community
and walks beside them through their illness.
“We’re pleased to step up in response to the increased need
for help, support
the West Kootenay
Nav-Care program
and ensure that the
services they’ve been
providing through
this important community
program will
be able to continue
uninterrupted,” says
Brenda Hooper,
Chair of The Greater
Trail Hospice Society,
who developed
the Navigator program
with UBC
Okanagan researcher
Dr Barb Pesut.
Under Hooper’s
lead, the Trail area
was the first to be
part of the development
of this
initiative in 2012,
bringing a different
type of help to those
Kokanee Glacier hut keeper reflects
Many of us have a connection
to Kokanee Glacier
Provincial Park, whether it’s
from spending time within
its bounds or admiring the
view of the glacier from
town. Petra Hekkenberg
has her own unique view of
the park as the hut keeper.
She’ll share her reflections
and experiences in a visual
presentation at the Nelson
Library on January 18 at 7
pm.
Hekkenberg grew up in
the Netherlands and settled
in BC because she wanted
to live in a cabin in the
woods. “The mountains, the
water, the community, the
kindness and open-mindedness
of its people stole my
heart and made me decide to settle in the Slocan Valley,” Hekkenberg
says. In 2021 she was hired as hut keeper and park operator
in Kokanee Glacier Park. She kept a journal of sketches and words
about her time in the park. That journal became her book, In the
Alpine: An Illustrated Journal of Kokanee Park.
At the January 18 event, Hekkenberg will share excerpts from
her book along with a slide show, From Dutch Flatlander to Alpine
Local and the award-winning short film In Your Mind’s Eye:
Moods of Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park. The film was made
as a tribute to Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park’s 100th anniversary
and contains landscape video and excerpts from the park’s
logbooks dating back to the 1970s. Hekkenberg says, “I hope this
presentation will bring people together to celebrate and share their
love for the alpine, featuring Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park.”
In the Alpine: An Illustrated Journal of Kokanee Park will be
available for sale; 15% of sales will be donated to Friends of West
Kootenay Parks.
Nelson Public Library
Closing the book on overdue fines
The Nelson Library is eliminating overdue fines effective January
1, 2023. Library staff and board are excited to join the growing
numbers of libraries in Canada that are removing fines to provide
barrier-free access to library services and materials.
“Late fines can discourage people from using the library and can
be a significant barrier to many,” says Chief Librarian Tracey Therrien.
“We hope that anyone who isn’t using the library because of
their fines will feel welcome to return to the library.”
Libraries originally charged fines as a motivator to return items
on time, but libraries that have been fine free for some time have
seen an increase in circulation, returned items, and memberships.
Under this new policy, borrowers are still encouraged to return
their materials on time. Materials will continue to have their regular
loan period and can be renewed up to 2 times. If an item is more
than 42 days overdue, it will be marked lost and a replacement fee
will be charged. Fees will also still be charged for damaged items.
Solutions on Page 2 or
pennywiseads.com/local news
Technology is a Tool, Not a Focus
You’re driving in an unfamiliar area and don’t fully trust that
you’ll be able to find your destination. But you’ve come prepared!
You open your navigation app or your vehicle’s infotainment system,
type in the address, and are fastidiously following the directions.
You’re so focused on not missing a turn, in fact, that your focus on
the road slips for just a moment… and when you look back up, you
find yourself closing the distance between yourself and the vehicle
ahead far too quickly.
Navigation tools are useful additions to a driver’s arsenal. However,
it is worth remembering that these are indeed tools and not the
main focus. National Safe Driving Week is December 1 – 7 and the
Canada Safety Council, in partnership with the Insurance Brokers
Association of Canada, want to remind you that focus on the road
while behind the wheel is a must.
“It might be said that automation tools such as navigation apps
in a vehicle help reduce driver anxiety and therefore can help a person
focus on safe driving,” said Gareth Jones, President and CEO
of the Canada Safety Council. “And while that is true, these tools
can also contribute to distraction behind the wheel when not used
as intended. When used as a crutch, rather than assistance, these
technologies can quickly become problematic.”
Any task that takes focus off the road increases the likelihood of
a collision. Property damage and increased insurance premiums,
to say nothing of injury and fatality, are simply not worth the risk.
Read on for tips on how to safely navigate away from distraction
behind the wheel:
• Program your navigation before departure. At 90 km/h, taking
your eyes off the road for five seconds is the equivalent
of traveling the full length of a standard football field. Program
your destination ahead of time so it does not become
an issue while on the road.
• Get a passenger to help guide you. The auditory cues on
navigation apps can be distracting. Additionally, some apps
actively draw your attention to them, prompting the driver
to confirm presence of law enforcement or a collision. To
eliminate these distractions, ask a passenger to direct you
and leave the navigation tool muted. If you do not have a
passenger on board, be cognizant of where your attention is
being directed and ensure that there are no competing interests
to your focus on driving.
• Leave the phone alone. The best solution, of course, is to
leave your phone alone entirely while behind the wheel.
Familiarize yourself with your destination ahead of time,
using a tool like Google Street View. Knowing the area and
directions will enable you to keep your focus entirely on the
road, and to keep alert so you won’t miss your destination.
National Safe Driving Week campaigns, go to www.canadasafetycouncil.org
Lower Columbia Community Health
- Resident Input Requested -
A committed group of doctors, nurse practitioners, and
community members are working together to bring a Community
Health Centre (CHC) to the Lower Columbia region.
The Lower Columbia CHC Network Working Group is proposing
a CHC that includes 3-4 clinics to serve Rossland,
Warfield, Trail, Montrose, Fruitvale, and RDKB Areas A and
B. The proposed CHC will be a community-governed, notfor-profit
organization providing patients with access to a
team of healthcare providers working together to care for
patients of all ages and abilities. Working with Indigenous
organizations, settlement services and other groups to provide
a culturally-safe space, the CHC will also integrate other
health care and social services that focus on the needs of the
community.
Dr. Mike Scully, Family Practitioner in Rossland, said,
“After researching the health care needs of our communities
through a Needs Assessment, and with a letter of support
from each of the five municipalities in the Lower Columbia as
well as the Regional District, it’s clear that launching a Community
Health Centre has the area’s full support. As a working
group, we believe the introduction of a CHC will increase
access and attachment to a primary care provider; helping
residents get the care they need, with the right practitioner,
when they need it.”
To further develop the CHC model to meet specific
community needs, the Working Group is seeking patient
input on the initiative through a survey on their website at
kootenayclinics.org/survey.
Win Mott, a Trail resident and Chair of the Working Group
said, “Recent estimates indicate that 30% of patients in the
Lower Columbia region are without a primary care provider.
This is unacceptable. The research shows that the team-based,
Community Health Centre model works. Not only does it
increase access to practitioners, we’re hearing directly from
potential physician recruits that it is an attractive option.
We’re strongly motivated to move this initiative ahead for all
residents in the Lower Columbia and look forward to receiving
their feedback.”
Community Health Centres are not a new concept. They
have existed in BC for over 50 years and continue to be
adopted by communities across the province. In the Lower
Columbia, the Working Group has consulted and collaborated
over the past three years with the Kootenay Boundary
Division of Family Practice, Interior Health, and local
municipal leaders to develop a CHC proposal that proactively
addresses the needs of the region.
Warfield’s Mayor, Frank Marino shares, “A great deal of
work has gone into the Lower Columbia CHC Network initiative
over the past few years. Now that the project is closer
to becoming a reality, it is time to gather input from residents
about what is important to them in a future CHC.”
Community Health Centre Network, including a copy of the
Needs Assessment and our contact information, visit kootenayclinics.org.
