How Is The Weather?

North Norwegians love to talk

about the weather.

RIKSGRENSEN

But, despite the location well above

the Arctic Circle, The Narvik Region will

not leave your bones frozen 24/7. The

warm waters of the Gulfstream provide

quite some respite for the Ofot Fjord,

including Narvik, and keep the ports ice

free all year, and may surprise you with

summer temperatures up to 30°C.

NARVIK

SK JOMEN

From late May until late July the sun

does not set, leaving the clouds to

decide whether you will experience the

midnight sun or just a bright night.

In mid-November the sun disappears

until late January.

BALLANGEN

Winter temperatures are usually

somewhere between +5°C to –15°C,

though some days can be much colder

- especially when you travel further

inland.

K JØPSVIK

Are you planning to hike or ski in the

region? Always check the weather

forecast! In the northern part of

Norway, the weather can change

quickly. Prepare well and get updates

on the weather at www.yr.no.

If you are going skiing or hiking in the

snow, check www.varsom.no (varsom

means cautious) for information about

the snow conditions.

Currency

The currency is

Norwegian krone (NOK).

Norway is mainly a cashless

country and all major credit and

debit cards are widely accepted.

Exchanging foreign currency for

local cash may be challenging, but

you will find ATM machines in many

places. It’s a good idea to have

some Norwegian money when you

arrive in the country.

Tide table

"Se havnivå" shows observed and

forecasted water levels, and tide

tables for almost any place along

the Norwegian coast. If you are

interested in water level information

for within the next five days, we

recommend that you use the water

level forecast.

destination was labelled in 2022, and

the labelling scheme is approved by

Global Sustainable Tourism Council

(GSTC). Norway is one of few

countries that has an internationally

approved national standard for

6 Travelguide The Narvik Region 2023

How to dress in

the Arctic

Bikini, flip-flops and sun

hat might be useful in the

summer, but not during the

arctic winter.

We have a saying in Norway, “There is

no bad weather, only bad clothes!”, and

it is true. Here in Northern Norway, it is

all about wool and layers. If you follow

these guidelines on how to dress in the

Arctic, we can guarantee you a warm

and comfortable Arctic Experience all

year around!

WINTER

October to April. To feel warm and

comfortable in the wintertime its

important do dress layer-bylayer!

FIRST LAYER

The first layer next to your

skin should be longsleeved

and long-leg

thermal underwear

and wool socks. It is best to avoid

cotton underwear as it quickly

becomes wet and sweaty, and then

you will get cold. Important: We

recommend that you wear 100% wool

next to your skin.

SECOND LAYER

The second layer should consist of a

long-sleeved, wool or fleece sweater

and trousers. Thickness is depending

on temperature and conditions.

THIRD LAYER

The third layer should be a jacket and

pants that is both water and windproof.

It can be insulated or a thin shell

depending on conditions, activity and

what your first two layers consists

of. For extremely low temperatures,

cotton without a waterproof membrane

is recommended. A scarf around your

neck, and a pair of thick wool socks are

a must!

TAKE IT OFF AND PUT IT ON

The point of layers, is that you can

easily regulate your temperature

by removing or adding a layer,

and when you come inside

Rombaksbotn

©Reinhartsen Media

in for example a heated lavvo with

a fireplace, you can easily peel off a

couple of layers of clothes. If you do

this and then put them on again when

you go outside, you will not feel so cold.

VARIED CLIMATE

The Narvik Region has a varied

climate, and, in the winter, the average

temperature is around -4 degrees, but

you can expect temperatures from

-25 degrees to +5 degrees, depending

on weather and where you go in our

region. To stay warm and comfortable,

wool next to your skin and layers is

always the recipe for success. The wool

adjusts to temperatures, and that is

what makes it unique, all year around. It

is also important to know that even if it

feels warm right away, this can change

fast if you do not have enough clothes

or the right clothes on.

SPRING, SUMMER, AND FALL

May to September. The average

temperature in the period between May

to September is 10 degrees Celsius, so

thin thermal wool underwear, summer

down jacket and summer gloves are

words we locals are familiar with in

summer too. In the spring and early

summer, it can be wet and cold, so we

recommend having a thin wool layer

and a light rain and windproof jacket

with you.

In July and August, the weather

tends to be warmer and better, but

the same applies for this period. You

can experience warm days where you

wear a bikini and shorts, but when the

evening sets, you will need some warm

clothes. This also is important if you do

long excursions because the weather

and temperature can change fast, so it

is recommended to always bring warm

clothes with you.

Many of the activities we offer in the

Narvik Region supply clothing for their

activities such as thermal suits, shoes,

hat, and mittens, but you have to have

the 2 first layers covered to stay warm.

Points of Interest

The region presents unique opportunities

for experiencing untouched nature while

taking part in local culture.

The Narvik region is a large area in Northern Norway,

but also sparsely populated. However – it’s not all

wilderness – but several villages, all worth visiting for

their selection of natural and cultural experiences.

01 NARVIK

Narvik is the only town and a great hub for

experiencing the region. The city center offers

very good accommodation and shopping

opportunities. Narvik is home to the main

attractions; Arctic Train, Narvik Museum, Narvik

War Museum, Narvikfjellet, The Cable Car, The

Winter Festival and much more.

02 SKJOMEN

Skjomen is a small village known for its scenic

landscape and is often referred to as Norway’s

most beautiful valley. The lush village is

surrounded by steep granite mountains, ice blue

glaciers and offers everything from golf and dog

sledding to one of Norway’s best climbing areas.

Skjomen is abundant with outdoor experiences

and highly recommended.

03 BALLANGEN

For a long time, the community in Ballangen

existed because of the mining industry. Hence,

the mining history museum is well worth a visit.

Ballangen offers more than just minerals. Endless

hiking trails, a camping paradise for children,

some great cross-country trails and Norway’s

biggest moose population awaits you.

04 BOGEN

The area has something to offer for everyone, steep

mountains, and gentle valleys, rolling grasslands,

birch forests and picturesque coastal landscapes.

Saltwater fishing on bright summer nights, while

salmon-carrying rivers lead you inland to many fishrich

waters. Add a flourishing Sami culture and the

Márkomeannu festival on top and you are ready for

experiences you will never forget.

05 KJØPSVIK

Kjøpsvik in Tysfjord is known for its varied and mighty

nature. The area is home to Stetinden, Norway’s

iconic national mountain. There are endless

opportunities to engage in all types of outdoor

activities, from fishing and hiking to epic summit

tours and cave exploration – all in all spectacular.

A scenic coastal area known for its fishing

Eldorado. The spectacular landmark Morgans

place to learn about coastal culture. Experience

the high-masted, elegant Nordland boat at the

museum and learn something new about the life

by the sea revolving around the ocean tides.

07 TENNEVOLL

The village in the heart of Lavangsfjorden offers

a range of activities suitable for all levels. Ice

climbing and free skiing for the toughest, or owl

safaris and exciting hikes for the family. Don’t

forget to explore the mysterious caves if you

stop by or join in on a guided WW2 hike and walk

Port of Narvik

Welcome to Narvik - A

peninsula surrounded by

fjords and mountains.

Narvik is so much more than

just beautiful nature!

The Port of Narvik is central in the

development of Narvik as a national

and international transport and

logistics centre. The harbour is ice-free

all year round and well protected from

wind and adverse weather.

Narvik is the largest port in the Barents

Region shipping more than 23 million

tonnes through our facilities annually.

In 2005, the Port of Narvik was given

status as a “Motorways of the Sea” by

the EU.

Narvik and Ofotbanen are also on

the TEN-T CORE Network, which is

regarded as the main railway network

for transport within the EU.

RAIL

Narvik is the only city in Northern

Norway (north of Bodø) with a railway

connection. On-dock rail connects

with the international network

through Sweden linking us to southern

Scandinavia and central Europe, as

well as The Baltics and Asia. 10 iron-ore

trains, 3 cargo trains and 2 passenger

trains arrive and depart from Narvik

daily.

MS Queen Elisabeth

©Dag Normann

ROAD

Narvik is a junction for the national

and regional road network, with the

E6 running north to south and the E10

running east to west, with fish being

the major product exported. The road

connection west (Lofoten/Vesterålen)

and north (Troms) is now 20km shorter

due to the new Hålogaland Bridge

crossing the Ofot Fjord.

AIR

Narvik’s regional airport is Harstad/

Narvik Evenes and it is only one of three

wide body airports in Norway with the

capacity to take down any size plane.

There are approx. 15 daily arrivals/

departures of passenger planes from

Evenes as well as cargo and military

traffic.

To be an attractive

To be a different

MS Mein Schiff

Cruise Port

Narvik

Narvik as a cruise destination

has grown steadily over the

last 10 years.

With the new developments such as

a new cruise pier and the increased

number of excursion possibilities, we

are renewing ourselves. The new cruise

pier is located 400 metres from the

town centre. It is 150 metres long and

can without problems accommodate

ships of up to 350 metres in length.

TURNAROUND

Another goal is to attract more

turnaround operations and it is

our pleasure to introduce this new

turnaround concept for cruising in

Arctic waters under the Midnight Sun

or the Northern Lights. This is a truly

unique opportunity to see this part of

the world from a different perspective.

Rural, rugged with wild nature and

fauna. The colour spectre of the Arctic

light reflected in the fjords, mountains

and glaciers along this route gives this

cruise an exceptional setting.

The Port of Narvik is only 40 minutes

from Harstad/Narvik Evenes

regional airport. Narvik also has the

infrastructure on the quayside to

handle the busses and the people.

In combination with excursions we

believe this offers a unique opportunity

to explore our region.

OVERLAND

Narvik is only a three-hour drive from

Lofoten, Vesterålen and Tromsø. Its

location is ideal for cruise lines to

do overland tours between these

destinations, meeting the ship at

the next destination. Several of our

excursion tours are located between

these destinations, making it attractive

for the guest to go exploring.

TRANSIT

Narvik has a great selection of

activities/excursions for all ages, both

summer and winter. With a combination

of volume tours and boutique

excursions we welcome all cruise lines

to Narvik.

PRE/POST CRUISE ADVENTURES

Offers you a unique opportunity to

The Arctic

cooking

philosophy

The Narvik region is situated

between high mountains and

deep fjords, where nature is

rich in both pure ingredients

and unique flavours.

In recent years, the region has

established itself as a unique food

destination with varied restaurants and

some of the region’s best wilderness

chefs. One of them is Sami-descendent

Vegard Stormo, food, and beverage

manager at Scandic Narvik. His passion

for seasonal and short-travelled food

benefits locals and travelers alike.

WHEN PASSION & PROFESSION FIND

EACH OTHER

If you are to explore the nature in

the region, you will quite possible

encounter Vegard at some point.

Always near some delicacy of the Arctic

nature; by the seaside collecting sea

urchins and shells, fishing, or hunting,

or in the forests, picking mushrooms

and berries. All ingredients are carefully

selected to be prepared and served

to the guests at Tind restaurant at

Scandic Narvik. Or outdoors.

Several years ago a Chinese film team

was visiting, and especially for them,

he hosted dinner right by the coast,

just outside of Narvik. He arranged for a

diver to suddenly rise from the sea with

fresh sea urchins, shells, and seaweed,

which was all added to the casserole

cooking on open fire.

NATURE ON THE PLATE

Vegard’s cooking philosophy is to

minimize the processing of food and

bring natural ingredients right into the

pot.

treating good ingredients according to

old traditions and presenting them in a

modern and innovative manner.

The calendar is an important guideline

for Vegard. The tastes and smells in

the menu reflect what you find and see

in the mountains and fjords around

the hotel. The sea, the meadows, the

mountains, and the marshes. King crab,

reindeer, and delicious cloud berries.

The wild sheep, reindeer and the juicy

berries in the autumn, the famous

skreimølja (seasonal cod fish served

with its liver and roe) in the winter,

the halibut in the springtime and the

summer’s delicious mountain fish.

Everything is a story.

especially the food

Vegard is dedicated to serving

food with good stories that

lift and carry the overall

experience.

Thus, it is important where the food on

your plate comes from and how it got

there. This philosophy has been with

me throughout my career as a chef. I

have grown up outdoors and the joy of

all the ingredients nature offers.

CATCH AND COOK. LITERALLY AN

OUT-OF-THEORDINARY COOKBOOK

A cookbook by Leif Milling, to which

Vegard is one of the contributors.

The focus of the book is the role of the

competitions, and have resulted in,

among other things, 4 first-place

awards: Reindeer Chef of the Year,

Northern Norwegian Chef of the Year,

Sami Chef of the Year (Sapmi Awards)

and Head Chef of the year 2020.

In addition, I am a Sami descendant and

have been very interested in learning

about the Sami culture and our bond

with nature. I would like to pass this on

to our guests and staff to increase local

knowledge and culture.

In ancient Sami culture, harvesting

from nature was a necessity. Although

the reindeer was the basis of life,

small game, fish, herbs, mushrooms,

and berries were important food

supplements, and a medium of

exchange for other commodities.

It is important to respect and love

the nature we depend on. We focus

on good, short-travelled ingredients,

sustainability, the environment,

and, not least, happy guests and

employees, says Vegard.

Polar Park

The worlds northernmost

animal park

Polar Park is the world's northernmost

animal park and is home to Norway's

large predators, such as bears, wolves,

and lynx, as well as deer, moose,

reindeer, and muskox. The park,

which opened in 1994, is focused on

exhibiting animals in their natural

surroundings, allowing visitors to

see them in a setting that closely

resembles their natural habitat.

Visitors to Polar Park are welcome to

explore the park at their own pace

or join one of the guided tours to

learn more about the animals and

their behavior. The park also has a

restaurant and cafe where visitors can

enjoy meals made from local produce,

or they can have a picnic in the park.

Included in the entrance fee is

predator guiding, which takes place

on weekends in the winter season and

every day in the summer season. This

allows visitors to learn more about

the large predators and see them up

close. The welfare of the animals is a

top priority at Polar Park, and they live

in large enclosures with the freedom to

hide in their natural surroundings. Most

Arctic Train

An unforgettable journey

through a beautiful and wild

arctic landscape.

The Arctic Train is an unforgettable

journey that takes you on a

43-kilometer ride through the stunning,

wild landscape along the Ofoten

line. The line stretches from Narvik in

Norway to Kiruna in Sweden, making it

Norway's most northerly railway.

AN UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY

As you travel from the ice-blue fjords

of Narvik to the barren mountains

of Sweden, you'll be able to witness

several historical events that add to the

dramatic atmosphere of the trip. The

train makes several stops along the

way to give you the opportunity to fully

experience the beauty of the arctic

landscape. With the help of the "Voice

of Norway" app, you can learn about

the history of the places you pass on

your journey.

THE OFOTEN LINE

The construction of the Ofoten line

began at the end of the 19th century

and continued into the early 20th

century. The railway was built to provide

access to an ice-free export port for

the massive iron ore deposits found

in northern Sweden. Many itinerant

workers, known as "rallers," came to

the area in search of fortune, and at its

peak, over 5,000 people were involved

in the construction of the track.

A RICH AND DRAMATIC HISTORY

Due to its importance as an export

route for Europe's largest iron ore

deposits, the route was heavily

contested during World War II. The

area surrounding the railway played a

key role in the Battle of Narvik, adding

to the rich and dramatic history of the

railway. This history, along with the acts

of war that took place in 1940, provide a

dramatic backdrop for the train journey.

War history

experiences

We welcome you to learn

more about the Narvik

campaign, the Battle of

Narvik, and WWII during your

visit.

In April 1940, the battling parties in

Europe all look to a town far to the

north: From Narvik, iron ore from

Sweden is shipped all over the world.

Iron ore that can keep the German

war machine going, iron ore that

under British control can hinder its

continuance. April 9th 1940, Narvik is

invaded by Nazi-Germany.

April 10th and 13th, the great powers

of Nazi-Germany and Great Britain

engage in one of the largest Naval

Battles to ever take part in the Atlantic

Ocean – the Battle of Narvik has begun.

When the German invasion happens

April 9th 1940, the Norwegian

battleships “Eidsvold” and “Norge” are

positioned close to Narvik. The old

battleships are swiftly sunk by a top

modern German fleet as the German

fleet lurk its way into the Ofotfjord,

under the cover of a snowstorm.

Narvik falls into German hands – some

surrender, others fight back. When the

German Kriegsmarine and the British

Royal Navy engage in intense battles in

the Ofotfjord the following days, both

parties suffer massive losses – losses

that will affect all battles to come.

62 DAYS OF WAR

Norwegian soldiers on neutrality guard

and at mobilisation takes on the battle

in the mountains. Allied forces from

Great Britain, France and Poland come

to aid. Together, they fight a German

army trying to gain control over Narvik

and strategic areas in the region. The

Germans are forced into a smaller

and smaller area, and Norwegian and

Allied forces gain back control over

Narvik May 28th. The German troops

find themselves forced up against the

border between Norway and Sweden,

ready for leaving Norway through

Sweden. It is Hitler’s first strategic

loss! But then the Allied forces leave

Northern Norway for the Western Front.

After 62 days of fierce battles in the

fjords and mountains, the declaration

of capitulation takes place June

10th 1940. 64 ships, 86 planes, and

8500 lives are lost during the Narvik

Campaign.

FIVE HARD YEARS OF OCCUPATION

The Germans take over and introduce

many sanctions. They occupy homes,

are encouraged to impregnate

Norwegian women, and establish

over 600 prison camps for Norwegian

and foreign prisoners. The civilian

population is faced with difficult

choices: Are you to agree or disagree

with the German occupying force?

Restrictions on food and other

necessary items are hard, people

experience increasing levels of

uncertainty and control, and around

them are horrendous prison camps

where humans are severely mistreated.

But life must move on; babies are

being born, providing food and clothing

requires creativity, and numerous

companies enter into cooperation

with the Germans to keep the wheels

turning.

Scene from the movie "The Battle of Narvik -

Hitler´s First defeat" that was partly filmed in

the Narvik region.

Norway and Narvik are liberated from

the German iron heel May 8th 1945 –

peace has arrived! Then the treason

and collaboration trials begin. Close

to 93,000 Norwegians are accused

of choosing the German side. Some

are acquitted, others are punished,

for what? It is the last time Norway

practice death penalty. In other parts

of the world, war ravages on. It ends

when USA drops atomic bombs on

the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and

Nagasaki in August 1945.

EXPERIENCE THE HISTORY

The Narvik region offers a variety of

activities and guided tours for both

The Northern

Lights

Experience the starry,

unbelievable colors that move

The Northern Lights, also known

as the Aurora Borealis, is a natural

phenomenon that can be seen in the

night sky in the polar regions of the

earth. In Narvik, located in the northern

latitudes just north of the Arctic Circle,

the Northern Lights can be seen during

the long polar nights when the sky is

clear.

The Northern Lights are known for

their beautiful, vibrant colors and the

way they seem to move and dance

across the sky. They are caused by the

interaction of solar particles with the

earth's magnetic field, which results

in the emission of light. The colors of

the Northern Lights vary, but they are

typically shades of green, yellow, red,

and blue.

To photograph the Northern Lights,

use the widest aperture on your

from 3200 to 6400. Set the shutter

speed to between 1-15 seconds and

adjust the white balance to 3500k to

accurately capture the colors of the

Northern Lights. Focus manually on a

distant light and use a shutter delay

of 2 seconds to avoid camera shake.

couples or families. Large windows on three of four

walls and in the ceiling of the master bedroom -

gives the feeling of sleeping under the open sky. All

cabins have their own terrace and are in the terrain

to give the feeling of private luxury. The modern

architecture blends into nature in a very special way.

Norway`s best backcountry

terrain.

A favored starting point for a lift-based

summit hike. With the help of lifts,

the ski traps are put at an altitude of

around 1000 meters. Within just an

hour, you will reach the Third Peak.

Several possible slopes await there,

including the internationally known

World-class

summit hikes

A great variety in mountain

landscapes, from the

fjords in coastal Norway to

the high mountain plateaus in

Swedish Lapland.

The Narvik region serves as an

excellent base for alpine ski touring

and off-piste skiing. Enjoy beeing

surrounded by fjords, islands, deep

valleys, pristine lakes, waterfalls,

glaciers and mountains plateaus. But

first and foremost, wild and rugged

mountains in seemingly endless

terrain.

With its great variety in mountain

landscape, from the fjords in coastal

Norway to high mountain plateaus

in the inland, giving the region close

to 100 high quality ski touring peaks

within a one-hour drive from Narvik city

center.

This combined with the region’s

large climate variation within short

distances, has made the Narvik region

attractive for many of the certified ski

touring guides, that in the past 2 years

have established their businesses with

Narvik as its basecamp.

With all its possibilities from urban

skiing at the Narvikfjellet Ski Resort,

Ski touring

which also offers the best ski-lift

accessed skiing in Scandinavia, to the

most recognized heli-skiing enterprise

in Scandinavia, the Narvik region is a

perfect place for an arctic ski touring

experience.

The town of Narvik has also all the

comfort of the city at your fingertips

after a long day out in the mountains,

and all types of accommodations can

be arranged from lodges to 4-star

hotels.

It's all about

the view

”If somebody mentions ski

touring and Northern Norway

most people probably think

about Lofoten Islands and

Lyngen. Strange enough Narvik is

practically unknown even though

the little town offers some of

the best backcountry skiing in

Scandinavia ”

distances, which improves the chances of

finding good snow and weather.

• A ski touring season that stretches from

the polar night with its northern lights, to

the late spring with neverending days under

the midnight sun.

• Ascents and descents up to 1700 metres

in vertical distance.

• Some of the best chute skiing in the world,

40 Travelguide The Narvik Region 2023

including 1200-metre descents straight

down to the fjord.

• Possibilities to do train accessed ski

touring.

• A comprehensive system of huts that can

Certified ski

guides

The nature of the region led

to having a remarkably high

number of internationally

certified mountain guides

residing here.

As of today, we have six guides with the

highest certification, which is unique

in a national context. If you really want

to explore the possibilities for ski

touring, we strongly recommend using

these guides. They have invaluable

knowledge about the local area.

STETINDEN

Stetinden is the national mountain

of Norway. Its distinct, steep profile

fascinates the many people who dream

of one day conquering it. During winter,

it is the slightly lower Halls Fortopp,

Stetind´s neighbour, that most skiers

head for. It offers great ski touring,

spectacular scenery and magnificent

skiing all the way down to the fjord.

TREDJETOPPEN

The ascent to Tredjetoppen is easily

accessible from the lifts in Narvikfjellet

ski resort, either on foot or with skins.

The view of Ofotfjorden and the

surrounding mountains is fantastic.

You get 1100 vertical metres of skiing

from the summit and down to the

Narvikfjellet

©Rune Dahl

bottom part of the lifts and can choose

between relatively mellow or really

steep descent alternatives.

SPANSTINDEN

Spanstinden is a real ski touring

classic in the Narvik region and a very

popular destination among ski touring

enthusiasts from all over the world.

The final section to the summit point

is really spectacular. Spanstinden

can be accessed from Lapphaugen

Turiststasjon, which is also a really

good base for ski touring in the

northern part of the region.

TVERRDALSFJELLET

Tverrdalsfjellet is synonymous with

Skamdalsrenna - a narrow chute that

winds down towards Skamdalsvatnet,

between 100-metre-high walls that

block out the sun. The colossal

surroundings can make the chute

a little claustrophobic, but it’s an

unforgettable meeting with nature and

a great descent for advanced skiers.

Dogsledding

The perfect way to experience

the arctic wilderness! Behind

a pack of happy husky tails,

you enter deep into the

mountains, with only the

sound of drooping paws

against the snow.

After a quick check of your gear, you

will meet the dogs and receive an

introduction to dogsledding. How to

prepare the sled, harnessing the dogs,

instructions for handling the sled

and how to handle the pack and take

care of the dogs and yourself in the

mountains.

First there is the excitement of the

start but soon we drive in silence into

the magnificent arctic landscape,

where you can enjoy the tranquility of

the wilderness. The path goes through

a changing and magical arctic terrain,

along rivers, through valleys, forests

and over hills, all in a frozen landscape

that makes you breathless. The winter

above the polar circle is special. It is

For generations, Huskies have

were indispensable for an arctic

environment. They are born to pull

heavy loads over long distances and

live in the wilderness, and they love to

run!

The dogs are positioned based on

their personal characteristics, the

smart leading dogs in the front and the

strongest dogs in the back. The guides

know the dogs inside and out and have

a very close bond with them, they are

the best colleagues in the world!

SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE

Dog sledding is suitable for everyone,

and there are many ways to do it.

Larger sleds take passengers with a

guide behind, so you can sit and enjoy

without having to drive yourself.

Smaller sleds can be run by yourself

with a friend who travels on hour-long

trips, or you can participate in multiday

trips with a hiking trail full of food,

The downhill

Who does not dream of

sitting on a mountain top on

a fantastic spring day - and

looking beyond a majestic

landscape?

You have just had fun on the way up,

had several breaks and been impressed

by the herd of reindeer that you

observed along the way. In front of you

hundreds of meters of fantastic skiing

to the sea far down there. You put the

thermos in your bag, take off the ski

That dream can be yours. Welcome to

ROMBAKSTØTTA (1230 mas)

One might think that a climbing

expedition is required to get to the top,

but that is not the case. The peak has

only short, easy climbing passages

and is actually among the most visited

peaks in the area. A classic with a great

view! Called only the Tøttatoppen

by the locals. The descent from the

top offers wonderful driving which is

divided into several short sections. We

recommend to climb and descend the

peak with a certified Mountain Guide.

RÅNKEIPEN (1200 MAS)

One of the absolute finest viewing

stops in the entire area. The ride

down to the Ofotfjord is a wonderful

experience with the fjord below you

all the time. At times, it almost feels

like the next turn goes straight down

into the water, even if you’re still above

the tree line. This tour is very popular

and on a nice day you should expect to

meet others in the mountains.

MERAFTESTIND (1443 MAS)

Driving into Sørskjomen to Skjombotn is

like driving into a world where nature’s

creator has worked overtime. Here it

gets dramatic. You end up surrounded

by tall granite walls and steep snow

slopes. The trip up to Meraftestinden

begins in Skjombotn and goes almost

straight uphill. From the top you can

enjoy the view of the huge glacier,

Frostisen, and then play your way back

to the car.

Rohkunborri

National Park

Explore the arctic wilderness

Rohkunborri National Park is located

in one of Troms county’s wilderness

areas, one hour drive north of Narvik.

To the west lies Sørdalen valley with

the dramatic canyon that was carved

out by melt water from lake Torneträsk

during the last Ice Age. On both sides

of this canyon tower lofty glacier-clad

mountains above 1,500 mas.

Down in the valley are lush, old-growth

birch forests and a great diversity of

plant and bird species. To the east

in the national park lies the mighty

Rohkunborri massif, surrounded by

forested valleys, alpine wetlands

and lake Geavdnjajávri. The Arctic

national park access points in the

Sørdalen valley and at Bones in the

Salangsdalen valley. Lake Altevatnet is

also a good starting point for hikes in

summer and cross-country ski trips in

winter.

REINDEER HERDING

Rohkunborri is an important grazing

area for domestic reindeer. The herds

are moved here for calving in the spring

months of May and June.

The calcareous bedrock makes for

good summer grazing and the snow on

the mountaintops reduces the insect

nuisance. In late autumn, the Swedish

reindeer are moved to their winter

grazing areas in Sweden. There are

both Norwegian and Swedish reindeer

herds in the national park.

Show consideration, and keep your

distance from reindeer during their

calving period.

EXPERIENCES

In Rohkunborri National Park, you can

hike, fish and hunt. You can hike on the

waymarked Arctic Trail from Sweden in

the south or from Øvre Dividal National

Park in the north through the canyon

in the Sørdalen valley, or you can take

a hike off the beaten path in a vast

wilderness area.

There are many good fishing lakes,

including the Geavdnjajávri and

Eartebelajávri lakes, which are

surrounded by cloudberry marshes.

In the designated season, you can go

shooting for both willow ptarmigan and

rock ptarmigan in the national park.

There is also a designated hunting

season for Eurasian elk.

48 Travelguide The Narvik Region 2023

HOW TO GET THERE

The E6 from Narvik leads you north to

Setermoen where you turn onto the

Altevatn road, and then choose

between the Sørdalen and Altevatnet

branches. Alternatively, take

the E6 through Salangsdalen and

branch off to Bones.

FLORA AND FAUNA

Rohkunborri is a habitat for the big

predators, wolverine, lynx and bear. The

golden eagle, rough-legged buzzard,

gyrfalcon and kestrel all nest here.

The national park’s high conservation

values are associated with its birch

forest wetlands and its alpine wetlands

on mineral-rich bedrock. In the

Sørdalskløfta canyon and the Jordbru

river system, there are lakes which are

naturally empty of fish.

One of the results is a healthy stock of

crustaceans, and these are important

for mountain ducks such as the

common scoter, long-tailed duck,

velvet scoter and scaup.

Springfulness

Powdery Snow. Sun. Great

times. An unique kind of

happiness.

Narvikfjellet

©Rune Dahl

During the months of March, April,

and May, the days get longer and the

weather gets warmer in the north.

Every spring, the arctic wakes up from

its winter sleep and bursts into life.

Here are some of the best ways to

experience it

SPRING SKIING

Vårskiturer (spring skiing), is very

popular in the region. The days are

warmer (you might be able to ski in a

woollen t-shirt), and are growing longer

and longer. You even get midnight

sun in late spring. In the Narvik region,

spring is the perfect season for ski

touring and kiting. Thanks to the sun

reflecting off the snow, you might even

get a spring tan! Just don’t forget to

pack your sunscreen

& sunglasses.

FIND THE PERFECT FLOW

Waterfalls are particularly beautiful

and impressive during spring when the

snow melts in the mountains. Witness

how the dramatic waterfalls roar to

life. May and June is the absolute best

time to see them come to life, rushing

cascades of water that plunge down

the mountainsides. Please respect the

potential danger of the waterfalls. Not

only is the current strong if you fall in,

but the ground nearby is often slippery

and wet from mist, and the cliffs are

steep and high.

HOORAY IT’S 17TH OF MAY

Children’s parades, marching bands,

traditional costumes, and ice

cream. A lot of ice cream. Norwegian

Constitution Day is a truly unique

party! Brazilians have their carnival,

the Irish Saint Patrick’s Day. Norway’s

answer? On 17 May, we celebrate

the signing of the constitution in

1814. In Norway, Constitution Day

is huge. It’s a patriotic, but very

inclusive and joyous atmosphere

– visitors are welcomed

warmly!

HOT SPRING TIP

Experience

Narvikfjellet Ski

Resort, where you can

ski from the top of the

mountain and down

to the fjord, often until

June.

THE BIRDS AT THEIR LIVELIEST

Spring really enlivens birds! Norway’s

long coastline is bustling with life this

time of year, when the migratory birds

that left in autumn return home to

breed and enjoy the warmer seasons.

Bring your binoculars and camera, and

maybe even your sound recorder, as

this is an experience for the ears as

well as the eyes. Just make sure that

you behave respectfully towards all the

newly hatched nestlings.

Look for

the small flowers

As spring arrives in Norway, the

landscape comes alive with colorful

wildflowers. In the high alpine

regions, you can spot trailing

azealea, alpine bearberry, and other

delicate blooms. Keep an eye out for

the tiny purple mountain saxifrage,

which blossoms in rocky ridges

following snowmelt. This is a sure

sign that spring has finally

arrived in the north!

Seize the night

Get that arctic summer

feeling!

Narvik is located in the northern

latitudes, just north of the Arctic Circle

at 68 degrees north. Between the

vernal and autumnal equinox, the area

experiences the phenomenon of the

midnight sun, where the sun never sets

below the horizon. This can be seen in

Narvik from late May to mid July. During

this time, the landscape is bathed in

yellow, orange, and red hues from the

glowing sun.

The midnight sun is a breathtaking

sight in Narvik, with the sun shining

over the fjords and surrounding

mountains. It is a unique experience

that has put Narvik on the map as

a destination for witnessing the

midnight sun. The phenomenon occurs

and the North Pole faces towards the

sun during the summer, allowing for

constant sunlight.

In Narvik, the midnight sun can be seen

from late May to mid July. During this

time, the landscape is bathed in warm,

vibrant colors from the glowing sun.

The fjords and mountains surrounding

Narvik are particularly stunning during

this time, as the sun shines over them

without ever fully setting.

During the season of the midnight sun,

locals tend to take advantage of the

long days and light nights. People in

Narvik go hiking in the evenings or even

at night, and fishing in the lakes or from

the pier is a popular activity. With 24/7

daylight, there is plenty of time to enjoy

the great outdoors in the Narvik region.

the horizon until around 9 p.m. Despite

the shorter days during the autumn

Amazing Fjord

Experiences

Whether you want to

destination.

The fjords are often described as

“natures own work of art”, formed when

the glaciers retreated and seawater

flooded the U-shaped valleys.

Thanks to the warm waters of the Gulf

Stream and air currents caused by the

Coriolis effect, Norwegian fjords enjoy

a relatively mild climate and remain

Climb Norways National

Mountain.

The gigantic granite mountain at the

very south of the Narvik municipality

has been an eye-catching landmark,

ever since human existence found

place in the region. It is very possible

to climb up our impressive national

mountain, with the help of one of Narvik

regions certified guides.

The mighty anvil can be seen from a

vicarious distance. The mountain has,

over the years, inspired and attracted

climbers, artists and photographers

from far and near.

ARTWORK CREATED FROM ICE

You will not find something as powerful,

as it seems almost unapproachable

where it stands, smoothly cut.

A monument of 1392 meters, created

by millennial ice sculptors. Smoothly

polished into a piece of granite artwork

that plunges straight into the sea. This

is how it has been magically viewed

as part of the Northern Norwegian

landscape. In admiration and

astonishment, people have treasured

the mountain, wondered about it, and

felt drawn to it.

THE KING OF STETINDEN

A quarter of a century after the first

climb, Arne Næss introduced bolt

climbing in Norway. The development

of climbing methods was in process

in the period 1936-37. Næss climbed

the mountain using several different

technical routes, which were

impressive. The professor established

himself as the king of Stetinden, and in

1963, he led the first winter ascent of

the mountain via the eastern wall.

One of our most beautiful summits

Stetinden is a great experience for

those who seek the magical presence

of the mountain and its mightiness.

Therefore, they will definitely enjoy the

view from below. As well as, those who

would rather look out over its realm

from the top. It is possible in Narvik to

A successful trip to Stetinden is easily

If you are a beginner who wishes

to practice how to place nuts and

stoppers, you can find suitable places

at Haugfjell and Kleivhøgda. Consider

some additional tips for climbing crags

in the region:

KJERRINGVEGGEN

At Haugfjell, north of Narvik. A nice crag

with several bolted routes. A few routes

also for trad climbing. Haugfjell also has

other climbing crags.

LEIRVIK

Northeast of Narvik. This is one of the

nicest and most easily accessible crags

in the Narvik region. Some relatively

easy routes, many of which are bolted

or accessible for top roping.

KLEIVHØGDA

North of Narvik. The wall has 7 trad

climbing routes with grades ranging

from 4- to 6.

STIBERG

Located in Skjomen, about 7 km past

Elvegård. Stiberg is a vertical wall with

difficult routes. Several technical

routes to test your skill. There are also

several routes here for trad climbing.

SVARTDALEN

East of Narvik. This crag contains

several good routes, graded mainly

between 5+ to 8+. Many of the routes

are bolted, with a few routes available

for trad climbing.

FRAMNES

This small crag is almost in the town

centre, right by the road to the old

airport. The bolted routes here are

graded between 5+ to 7.

EIDETINDEN

Eidetinden (847 masl) is on some

recent maps also known as Stortinden.

There is a number of climbing routes

available here. On the northern wall

there are 3 routes, whereas the

southeastern side has 8 routes and a

long traverse.

KUGLHORNET

Kuglhornet (also known as Huglhornet

or Kulhornet) is a fantastic place

for climbing. The mountain is easily

accessible from E6 in Efjord. There

are several climbing routes, with the

perhaps most well-known Østkammen

– one of the “must-do” routes in the

region.

STETINDEN

Norway’s national mountain has been

popular among climbers for along time.

The summit has very steep sides and

must be climbed in order to reach the

top. Several options with different

approaches.

INDOORS CLIMBING GYM

The climbing gym (at Kraft Narvik) is

located by the university college. The

gym has a bouldering room, and 4

climbing walls, including 2 auto-belays.

The walls are 13,5 m tall and offers

varied climbing and difficulty levels.

Necessary climbing gear can be rented.

ICE CLIMBING

The Narvik region offers several places

for quality ice climbing, some reachable

within minutes. Within one hour drive

there are many more. Rick McGregor

by the road, with possibilities for top

rope belaying.

SILDVIK

Just past the Rombak bridge there are

gently inclined waterfall, which makes

for good practice for beginners.

ABISKO

Abisko is one hour’s drive from Narvik.

are normally very stable throughout

winter. Varied ice climbing offering

opportunities to make top rope

Autumn

a season of colors

Togetherness

@Joakim Jaksland

60 Travelguide The Narvik Region 2023

Nothing can

last forever

Over the course of a few short

weeks, the summer loses its

green grip as the colour-rich

autumn sets in. A season that

is abundant and generous in

so many ways.

At the end of August, the

transformation in the Narvik region

starts. The mountain birches turn

yellow, and on the meadows the

blueberry bushes dress in a flaming red

colour.

It doesn’t take long for the rest of the

trees and the forest to follow.

During September, the colour belt

creeps down the mountain sides as the

Cloudberries

@Michael Ulriksen

highest peaks are frosted by the first

snowfall of the year. Light and colours

change from day to day.

Mountain-ash (rowan) impresses with

its varied colour palette shines from

deep yellow via luminous orange and

strong red tones to a surprising touch

of purple.

THE

FOOD SEASON

Autumn is also the harvesting season.

The bogs have dressed in gold. Under

the August and September sun,

clusters of alluring cloud berries appear

in their beautiful golden cloaks.

Yellow and juicy, they lie in close

proximity to the marshes and the

slopes, calling to us, and luring us

higher up and farther in. And we are

lured.

At the beginning of September all

moose and small game hunters feel

an extra tingling in the stomach. The

month marks the start of a new hunting

season and soon moose and grouse

meat will be curing in garages and

under the roof tops.

Autumn hike

@Rune Dahl

LOBSTER AND HIKING

September is also the month when

the areas many domesticated

and wild sheep are brought down

from the summer pastures on the

mountainsides, and in October you can

hunt the worlds northernmost lobster

in the fjord under the steep north wall

of the national mountain, Stetinden.

The wonderful autumn nature is an

irresistible invitation for hiking and

outdoor activities. The summit tours

are now at their most beautiful. The

insects are almost gone, the colours

are strong and the fresh clear autumn

air provides extra broad views from the

Narvik regions many mountain peaks.

NOTHING CAN LAST FOREVER

The farewell performance of the forest

and the mountains is intense. For a

week or two its flames reach glorious

Tysfjord

@Michael Ulriksen

heights, followed by first autumn storm

and sweeps away the splendour.

When the last, crisp-dry foliage has

fallen to the ground, and the night frost

has cracked it with rhyme, the autumn

is relentlessly over. The colours are

gone, the puddles are covered with ice

sheets and the sun loses altitude from

day to day.

Autumn Lights

@Rune Dahl

Indoors, the warm woollen blankets

and slippers are put out, and more and

more often one can notice smoke from

the many chimneys. A new intense

season is on its way. Maybe it will snow

tomorrow?

The fresh tastes

of autumn

Lobster, lamb, and moose.

Root vegetables that have

grown slowly, steadily soaking

up the sweet flavours of

mother earth.

As the days grow shorter and the air

gets cooler, the autumn season brings

a bounty of fresh and delicious flavors

to the Norwegian table. Lobster, lamb,

and moose are just a few of the dishes

that are popular during this time of

year, and root vegetables, which have

grown slowly and steadily, soaking up

the sweet flavors of the earth, are also

a key part of the autumnal diet.

Hunting and harvesting season is in

full swing in the forests, where berries,

mushrooms, and game meat can be

found in abundance. This is the time of

year when Norwegians turn to richer

and more robust cuisine, often slowcooked

with a lot of patience and care.

Harvest Season

@Michael Ulriksen

Many of Norway's food traditions have

deep roots in the nation's history of

hunting, farming, and fishing. The

lobster season lasts from October to

Christmas, and during this time, sea

trout and crab from Northern Norway

are also highly prized. The hunting

season provides local dinner tables

with meat from reindeer, moose, and

grouse – all delicacies with a distinct

taste of the wild.

Lamb is another very important

ingredient in Norwegian cuisine – not

only is it the main ingredient in the

national dish of fårikål (lamb stew),

but it is also a key component of many

slow-cooked autumn dishes.

For a list of the best eateries in Narvik,

be sure to check out page 13. You'll be

sure to find some delicious autumnal

dishes to try!

The Norwegian word

for autumn – høst –

also means “harvest”
