Specialist in Artificial Grass, Contemporary Gardens,

Porcelain Paving and all types of Landscaping
We are are an experienced team of 8 landscapers with most of our
guys having 20 plus years in the trade.
I started myself at the age of 13 in the landscape industry working
weekends for a local garden centre, and then progressed over the
years. I’ve spent the last ten years running a team of 15 but now
we’ve downsized so we can specialise more in the design and
build element and being able to be more focused on fewer builds.
We have built gardens for Chelsea gold winners, installed in the
grounds of Chatsworth, worked all over the country building sensory
gardens, and we pride ourselves on quality and passion and
thinking out of the box!
For a complete design and build package don’t
hesitate to contact us we have a great customer base
and fantastic portfolio.

Happy New Year and welcome to the January 2023 edition of The
Eckington and Killamarsh Doorsteppa!
We want to take this opportunity to thank all our clients, and each
of you in the community for your support over 2022, and hope
everyone had an amazing Christmas. We certainly appreciated the
break!
This month we focus again on Eckington’s Got Talent who marked
11 years of performances in 2022. They have exceeded £10,000
raised for local charities. All good things come to an end ! Turn to
our Community section on Page 22 for all the info.
Many of us will have received the odd unwanted item for Christmas.
Rather than sticking it away in a cupboard never to be seen again,
why not pop it into our classifieds? One person’s rubbish is
another’s treasure! See all the details of how to go about this in our
Stuff 4 Sale section on Page 30.
Once again, it’s a congratulations from me for anyone who has
popped the question over the recent holidays. One thing is for sure
- you will need a relaxing holiday after the big day! Lisa Byers has
some amazing advice in a Honeymoon special. Check out our Travel
section on Page 44 for more.
If you are interested in advertising in this or any of our four editions
of The Doorsteppa and are thinking of giving your business a New
Year boost, please get in touch on the details below. Note the

Equity Release
Pictured: The Team at Laterlivingnow, celebrating at The Peak Edge Hotel, Derbyshire
Raising The Standard
Chesterfield based Laterlivingnow, has become
the UK’s first specialist Equity Release advisory
firm to have 100% of its advisers attain the SOLLA
Later Life Lending Advice Standard.
This London Institute of Banking & Finance
accredited award demonstrates an adviser’s
understanding regarding client care in supporting
older and potentially vulnerable people, and helps
reassure clients, professional connections and
other trusted consumer organisations that the
adviser has reached a high standard of advice skills
and applied knowledge.
Simon Chalk, MD of Laterlivingnow and SOLLA
Advisory Board Member commented;
“To think that our small family-owned company,
based here in Chesterfield – Derbyshire, is the first
in the whole of the UK for all of its advisers
to attain the highest possible level of
professionalism, is a huge achievement.”
“Homeowners over 55 deserve to be advised by
the most dedicated professionals, as it’s a big step
to take and requires a high level of skill and
knowledge from their adviser.”
Jane Finnerty – Joint Chair of SOLLA (Society of
Later Life Advisers), said;
“We introduced the Later Life Lending Advice
Standard in response to advisers wanting to demonstrate
their applied knowledge and understanding
of later life lending and its wider implications
and considerations when advising older clients.”

ARIES 21 March - 20 April
Some situations draw to a natural conclusion bringing some
sorrow. This is a phase only and it’s worth remembering that some
things leave our lives in order to make way for new things to come in.
Fortunately you have at your fingertips all the resources necessary to
overcome obstacles and though you may be down you’re, certainly, not
out! Take time out for yourself and work through your emotions. You’re
stronger than you’ve ever realised. Thought for 2023: Decisions
made now shape your future for years to come.
TAURUS 21 April - 21 May
This has all the hallmarks of a glorious month though, sadly, it
won’t be in technicolour as such! But it is a vast improvement on
recent events. Slowly but surely life begins to change for the better and
you start to feel a calmness overcome you. There are one or two
niggling threads to be unravelled but some sort themselves out in time
and require the merest of tweaks from you. The remainder’s a doddle!
Thought for 2023: Be creative in your thinking and abundance will
surely follow.
GEMINI 22 May - 21 June
Get organised! One job at a time, please. Complete that task, tick
that box: move onto the next item. Oh, and whilst you’re about it; you’d
best remain tight lipped around others as to your ideas, motivation, and
intentions, as not everyone you encounter now has your best interests
at heart. It’s not as dire as it sounds really but it’s time for you to stand
up and be counted. Take no rubbish from others!
Thought for 2023: Transformation brings positive change. Do not
fear nor repel it.
CANCER 22 June - 23 July
All things in equal measure and balance of mind, body, and spirit,
allow you to be your best possible self and achieve success. Work
matters receive a boost and someone in a position of authority is on
hand to give you the full benefit of their experience. Listen carefully to
their words! Life should start to feel easier as you’re better able to deal
with situations and challenges don’t hold the fear they once did.
Thought for 2023: All actions have consequences. Consider all
possible outcomes before acting.
LEO 24 July - 23 August
New opportunities and offers come your way but be advised that
not everything on offer will come to fruition and you’d be wise to
scrutinise the small print before signing on any dotted lines. Again,
collaboration with a partner is a good option as two heads are better
than one and the workload can be shared. Patience will be required as,
at times, you may feel as though you’re wading through treacle. Keep
looking ahead! Thought for 2023: Your wisdom enables you to
appreciate the truths of situations.
VIRGO 24 August - 23 September
Balance is key! You find yourself in the right place, at the right
time, to capitalise on events as they unfold. You may be required to
think outside the box and quirky plans shouldn’t be ignored as they
herald a positive experience. This could lead to you treading a
completely different path altogether but there’s nothing to fear here.
Sometime you may feel as though you’re walking a tightrope but head
up and look forward. Thought for 2023: Be graceful and patient.
Going with the flow works best.
LIBRA 24 September - 23 October
Is a brand new you about to emerge? It would appear you have
plans aplenty and can’t wait to get started on your next adventure.
That’s great and you’re guaranteed an energy and enthusiasm not
experienced for some time. Of course; there is a but! Boring as it may
be, weary as you are, you must tie up any lose ends before you
venture forth. It won’t take you long! Then it’s onwards and upwards.
Thought for 2023: Sudden changes offer opportunity to grow and
make us stronger.
SCORPIO 24 October - 22 November
You’re required to dig deep within yourself to find that extra bit of
strength and courage you need to face a reality. You’ll also need to
ensure that everyone is treated fairly otherwise resentments can fester
and will come back to haunt you in the future. Remember the saying
“reaping what you sow”? New people come into sharp focus and new
friendships form. This is the basis on which to build good, solid,
harmonious, relationships. Thought for 2023: Be ready to claim your
happiness. Past endeavours reap rewards.
SAGITTARIUS 23 November - 21 December
New faces and new places beckon and the lure of adventure draws
you in. You’re ready for something new in your life. Yet something, or
someone, holds you back stopping you from reaching your full potential.
Step away for now! You can’t win every argument and sometimes it’s the
wisest move to concede the occasional point. You will, eventually, return
much stronger than before. Time spent in quiet contemplation brings
fresh insight into a conundrum. Thought for 2023: Your wisdom and
knowledge sees you deal, easily, with challenges.
CAPRICORN 22 December - 20 January
A series of new opportunities come along but not everything is as
it appears and there’s the potential therefore to be unrealistic in your
expectations! Read the small print on everything before signing on the
dotted line. Sleepless nights could spiral out of control; leaving you
lethargic and not operating at your best. Don’t be tempted to
compromise on anything for the sake of peace and quiet as this leads
to upset in the future. Thought for 2023: Embrace change! It makes
way for new experiences to evolve.
AQUARIUS 21 January - 19 February
Good news arrives and you’ll have to think on your feet and act
fast. Possibly faster than you would like but, providing you’re careful of
who you say what to, all should be well. There’s someone around who
could put a spanner in the works. This person isn’t who they purport to
be and won’t have your best interests at heart. There’s another new
beginning on offer with career being the main focus this time.
Thought for 2023: Focus on your objectives and drive towards
them with determination.
PISCES 20 February - 20 March
Beware of being led up the garden path. Not everything is clear
cut nor concise. Major decisions would be best put on hold for now.
Don’t worry as your intuition is there to guide you and no one knows
you, or your situation, better than you. A new start in business or career
is suggested but make sure you know exactly what you’re taking on.
Let others know who’s in charge from the go get!
Thought for 2023: Expect the unexpected and know that you can
overcome anything.

Eckington’s Got Talent Exceeds £10,000 raised for local charities!
Last year marked 11 years for Eckington’s Got Talent
There has been some fantastic ability
displayed over the years at Eckington’s Got
Talent. They have had acts auditioning for
Britain's Got Talent, and others put through
to Got What It Takes on CBBC. Georgie, on
the latter show, not only got through, but
won!
Highlights of the show include a group of
the singers and dancers performing to
1940s tunes to remember the anniversary
of WW2 while in lockdown. One of which
was on Sir Captain Tom's Facebook page
which went all around the world. Through
this, Shrinjoy became an honorary member
of EGT all the way from Illinois America!
Shrinjoy wanted to join in, and sang in one
of the lockdown shows, as well as the
Christmas shows on Sir Capt Tom's page.
The Poppy Appeal
Cardiac Risk In The Young
The Child Foundation
Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice
RACE Animal Care
Rain Animal Rescue
Ashgate Hospicecare
All the acts agree this has been a fantastic
experience, as it was for local resident
Gillian Parker. She said, “I never dreamed
when I started in 2012 we would be going
11 years later and raise so much for local
charities. But all good things come to a end
and last year was our last one. I want to
thank everyone that took part in the show
over the years. We have seen acts grow up
and follow their dreams, and even come
back as guests on our later shows! Plus,
most importantly, we know the money
went to good causes.”

Gillian continued, “Everyone that gave us
raffle and auction prizes - there was so
many of you to thank. Judges Steve April,
Amanda, Sal, Nick, Jim, Jessica and Max. We
had a few hosts over the years Sean, April,
Richard thank you all.”
“Also thank you to Alan, Lee and April for
being our sound engineers.”
Soldiers of Swing, finalists on BGT, hosted
the very last show and what a night it was.
A complete sell out for with plenty of guest
acts from over the years.
Julian Smith (finalist on BGT) joined
everyone to raise money for the NHS on a
lockdown show on the net. April, Loretta,
Georgie, Immy and Keria took part. The
youngest acts received thank you cards
from Sir Capt Tom and some even received
Blue Peter badges. Lockdown was very busy
for EGT!
All in all £10,129.00 has been raised for local
charities through the 11 years which has
gone to:-
The Guide Dogs For The Blind
The Royal National College for the Blind
Thornberry Animal Sanctuary
Other companies that offered support
along the way include:-
Roman Roads Systems Ltd
Petersman Folk Life Trust
Motionfive
Eckington Rotary
Eckington Town Team
Gillian finished, “On our last night we had
help from Emily, Diane, Ricky, Lewis, Mick
and Martin. The celebration couldn't have
been achieved without you all!”

History
This month Killamarsh Heritage Society look
at the history of the popular dish – Fish and Chips.
Fish and Chips is probably the most famous dish associated
with the UK and probably the most loved. We have always
had several to choose from in Killamarsh.
Over the past 150 years, it has become the go-to Friday
night treat. Everyone remembers waiting for Friday for the
best school dinner or a trip to the chippy. Here we delve
into exactly what is the history of fish and chips as we know
it.
As with almost all things in the world of food, the history of
fish and chips is unclear as to who actually invented the
great dish as both constituents were being sold and popular
in different parts of the country and it was the combining of
the two that sparked the culinary genius.
Most people think that fish and chips originated in England,
but this is not actually the case. Fried fish and chips eaten
together is a British combination but neither of the
constituent parts is British in origin.
The real history of fish and chips can be traced back to 15th
Century Portugal where the dish was really invented. Like so
many other famous dishes, fish and chips were created out
of necessity, not culinary genius. Portuguese Jews fled to
Britain in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. This was
due to Manuel 1 of Spain issuing an order that all Jewish
people had to be baptised and become Catholic, or be
executed.
The displaced Sephardi Jews brought with them their
tradition of frying white fish, usually cod or haddock, in flour
before sunset on Friday. As cooking is not allowed on the
Sabbath, this method preserved the fish meaning it could be
eaten cold the next day without losing its flavour. It was a
huge hit with the locals and fish “cooked in the Jewish
manner” was sold on the streets of London every day.
Charles Dickens, the author, makes reference to a “fried fish
warehouse” in the popular tale Oliver Twist published in
1838.
A Jewish immigrant, Joseph Malin, opened the first
recorded combined fish and chip shop in Bow, east London,
in 1869, It was so popular that it remained open until the
1970s.
The other name mentioned in the race to be first is John
Lees from Mossley near Oldham in the North of England. He
owned a “Chipped Potato Restaurant” which opened in
1863 which also sold fish and chips. He sold his fish and
chips from a wooden hut at a market before upgrading to a
brick built shop. In the window he had inscribed “This is the
first Fish and Chip shop in the world”.
Whoever it was, it became an instant sensation. People
started slathering batter on their favourite fish and serving
it with chunky chips.
The industrialisation of the 19th and 20th century brought
even more popularity of fish and chips. It quickly became a
favourite of factory and mill workers. To keep costs down
they used old newspapers as wrappers. This sparked the
phrase – “today’s news is tomorrow’s fish and chip papers.
However, this practice stopped in the 1990s as people
worried about the ink seeping into their food. A takeaway
will now wrap you food in plain paper or simply serve it in a
cardboard box.
By 1935 there were over 35,000 fish and chip shops in the
UK. It was now a Friday night favourite and a big part of
British culture.
In World War I Prime Minister Lloyd George made sure the
fryers stayed on at home. During World War II for the
morale of the nation, the Government made sure it was
never rationed.
The first choice of fish is cod or haddock but an array of
delicious fish is now offered such as plaice or pollock.
Salt and vinegar are classic partners for fish and chips.
Other accompaniments are mushy peas, curry sauce,
tartare sauce or gravy. The choice is yours.

KILLAMARSH PEOPLE ……INTRODUCING …….
Next in our feature about people
who are involved and well known
in the community – this month we
introduce Richard Wells of
Killamarsh Methodist Church.
“My name is Richard Wells and I
am one of the Stewards at
Killamarsh Methodist Church. I am a
regular volunteer at the long
standing and popular Thursday
coffee morning and monthly
Community Sunday Lunch. These
events alongside our Friday morning
Cafe form part of Killamarsh
offering of Warm Spaces at some
point every day of the week.
I was born in Sheffield and grew up
in Intake, attending the Methodist
Church there throughout my
childhood.
As one of 3 brothers and several
cousins our childhood was full of
sport. I remain a keen golfer and
have a passion for cricket, still
playing the game at 63. I am also
Chairman of Hollinsend Methodist
Cricket Club. As to football well I
am a long suffering Owl but
at least I fulfilled an ambition
and saw my team win a cup at
Wembley in 1991.
I went to Leicester to study
Pharmacy where I met my wife
Carol, also a Pharmacist. We have
2 girls Vicky and Lucy and now 2
grandchildren Emilia and Alfie,
Moving to Killamarsh in the 1990
we started to attend the
Methodist Church as a family and
this helped grow my faith and
belief that helping others was a
fundamental part of that.
A career in community pharmacy
helped me to live out my faith in
the work place.
Now I am retired spending time
with those who come to our
community events, chatting and
getting to know people and how
we can help them gives me similar
satisfaction to my time as a
Pharmacist.
If you need somewhere warm or
just want some company then pop
along and say hello any Thursday
from 9.00 am.”

5 Tips for
Planning
Your Dream
Honeymoon
When calm is restored after the initial
excitement of ‘popping the question’
(assuming the answer is ‘Yes’) … then
comes the rest!
For most couples, this is a truly special trip
– the first long, exotic holiday together and
the start of their new lives as a married
couple. So, you want it to be perfect, right?
Sadly, it is possible to do this heavenly trip
wrong, and a few simple mistakes could
endanger your wonderful trip. But we
don’t want that – we want you to have the
time of your lives. So here are my 5 top tips
for planning the perfect honeymoon,
whatever your tastes.
1. Check the Weather Before You Book
If you’ve been dreaming of a winter
wedding followed by a glorious beach
honeymoon, you need to do some serious
planning beforehand. Despite some of
these destinations seeming ‘always
sunny’, most of them have wet seasons,
hurricane seasons and harsh winters that
could ruin your ideal sunny honeymoon.
2. Use A Trusted Travel Agent
With a wedding to plan, the honeymoon
often ends up being an afterthought for
busy couples. But your honeymoon is one
of the most special holidays you will ever
have, so you should make it memorable.
Using a trusted travel agent means you will
have access to all sorts of hidden perks
from complimentary champagne and fruit
platters in your room to spa access and
romantic dining experiences.
Not only that, l have direct contact with a
wide range of hotels that offer fantastic
benefits packages for honeymooning
couples, so you can get the 5-star
treatment for a fraction of the cost.
There’s one more benefit to using a
trusted travel agent to arrange your
honeymoon, and that’s complete peace of
mind.
At Lisa Byers Travel, I can completely tailor
your honeymoon experience and take care
of all the little details – like luggage, seat
reservations, car transfers, and hotel
bookings – so you can enjoy a stress-free,
seamless honeymoon from start to finish.
3. Ask For Contributions
If you’re desperate for a particular
honeymoon but your budget won’t quite
stretch to it, you might want to consider a
honeymoon gift list. Honeymoon
contributions as wedding gifts have been
growing in popularity over the last few
years, especially since most couples
getting married already live together. This
makes the ‘traditional’ wedding gifts of
linens and china a bit redundant, so
instead ask your wedding guests to help
you put together the perfect honeymoon.
I can offer a unique gift registry service
that makes it simple and easy to manage
your donations. Guests can buy a particular
activity for you, or simply give a sum of
money for you to spend on you trip. Our
registry services include a web page, where
we can upload photos and messages, as well
as all the stationary you need to ask – and
thank – for your honeymoon gifts.
4. Read Trusted Reviews
It saddens me to say it, but every year I
deal with so many people who have been
taken in by fake reviews on their previous
holidays. Now if you’re reading a review of
your local pub, it’s unlikely they have hired
a reputation management company to
post fake reviews (after all, how much do
you spend in there? £30?).
But with hotels and big attractions, where
you’re often spending over £1000 before
you’ve even bought your first drink, fake
reviews are often posted to boost their
reputation and sabotage the competition.
You can avoid all of that by talking to a
trusted travel agent. As a franchise owner
of Travel Counsellors, we have access to
millions of hotel reviews worldwide from
trusted and certified sources, so you can
read real stories from real clients, without
worrying that you’re being lied to.
5. Budget Budget Budget!
Just like the wedding, the honeymoon
budget can easily spiral out of control. So,
when you’re talking honeymoons, it’s
important to set yourself a realistic
budget. From there, you can work out a
savings plan, how much you can pay off in
advance and whether you want your
guests to contribute.
By working out a budget, you avoid
overspending and having to make last
minute cutbacks on other elements of the
wedding. It also stops you from dipping
into the honeymoon fund if the wedding
starts to go over budget, as you know you
won’t be able to afford that wonderful
10-day trip if you take away from the pot.
But above all, planning the perfect
honeymoon means being true to yourself.
There is no such thing as a ‘one size fits all’
honeymoon, and this once in a lifetime trip
should be a celebration of everything that
makes your marriage unique.
As a Travel Counsellor, I love helping each
couple I work with craft the ideal
honeymoon for them – whether it’s
swimming in clear blue oceans or
hunkering down to watch the Northern
Lights together. With my network of
contacts and knowledge of luxury travel
worldwide, I can help plan the perfect
honeymoon for you.
So, let me book your next adventure, all
you need to do is pack!
