Poem a Week

Gary Michael Dault

“...this notion rests on a fallacy which identifies form and content; just as

though we were to say that water poured into a vase takes on the form and

properties of that vase.” Herbert Read, “James Joyce” in A Coat of Many

Colours (London: George Routledge & Sons, 1945), p. 147.

This is What I Long to See

leaving

a sparkling

density of water

in the shape

of the former

vessel

water poured

into a vase

a mass of water

vase-shaped

and free-standing

allowed to sit

for some time

then

when it is calm

and resolved to be

a body of vase-filling

water

the vase itself

is carefully

cut away

as formal

as porcelain

but surging

against itself

backwards and forwards

only vaguely sensing

the idea

of a former edge there

a neck

a rim

and a stable base

UNDER THE RADAR

Pushed away like a magnet that was identically

Negative, I am happy to have learned that

Our newly found differences and polarity finally

Bring us together… Sorry that I am again

Preaching, but rhymes are boring at the end

Of the day: the same sunset that puts a stain

On the horizon is looking forward to the rain

The meteorologist promised earlier. I am

Home finally; and have been here

For some years now, garnering memorabilia

Instead of creating them for souvenir shops

Down at Chinatown at Dundas and Spadina.

It’s all dark out here in the suburbs, and I shall

Shut the blinds and close the door so that

The stories of my life in Canada that I am not going

To tell you won’t be spilled like a glass

Of soy milk, so secrets remain secrets,

Notwithstanding that they aren’t even worth anyone’s

Attention and time, which you can spend on

Someone else, someone who has a bigger heart than me.

Travelling Palm

Snapshots

Tamara Chatterjee

Thailand (January, 2003) – About twenty

years ago; (give or take a day or two) I spent

a single day in the old Siamese capital,

taking in as many of the historical sights as

possible before mounting the night bus back

to Bangkok. I still remember it as a magical

day, essentially monastery hopping from

one end of the city to the other. Throughout

the day, the ancient statues and architectural

wonders grew larger and larger. At Wat

Mahathat, amongst the hullabaloo of days’

wondrous discoveries was a single Buddha

head enveloped by the tangled roots of an

old banyan tree. I imagine with time, that

the historical relic will be reclaimed entirely

by mother nature. I still feel blessed having

had the chance encounter, as the lore of the

encased Buddha head was what brought me

to Ayutthaya in the first place.

ART LOGBOOK

Holly Lee

(From Edwin) A group of women in the Korean province of Jeju dives deep beneath the water to

collect seafood and other aquatic treasures. Known as Haenyeo (meaning “sea women”) they

are part of a tradition that dates back to 434 CE. But they aren’t young people, as you might

expect from a group who routinely conquers depths between 32 and 65 feet and can hold their

breath for up to two minutes. The Haenyeo are mostly over the age of 60.

Eschaton, book of sand

“who

is invisible enough

to see you” - Celan

i

we slide into the throat of Winter, brightly bit and together

a bucket tinned by nine years, swallowing and roaming

fallen madly into incandescence stone-tucked and hard, just discovered

the world two days ago, absent and together.

ii

bright as that first day baying in May upon a book of sand.

iii

the quotidian ghosts of the everyday poem, skyed and branching upon the rubbled and the hill.

iv

love’s labour more rich than our labouring tongue or the luggage of language

the labour of our longing.

v

the sky lit as sea beneath our twinning lives.

vi

we lived in neighborhoods damp with voices.

vii

the lives ablossom, the color of apples long-ripe in a brown bowl.

viii

then one day you awake and swing between a nest of voices and trees

articulations gnarl beneath the licking sky,

dropped light angular between the snow

dropped white between the falling bronchial words

dropped red into your life and home,

decorating all that lit up,

chalky breath and arteries of light

roaming time for homing home

this life, vaping upon white, snow scribbled finger,

this air: the algebra from me to you.

ix

the sky lit as sea beneath our twinning lives, regained.

x

we live in neighborhoods damp with voices

lives ablossom the color of apples long-ripe in a brown bowl

then one day you awake and swing between a nest of voices and branch of gestures, touching

as we lived to tell the stories we were not expected to survive.
