SUMNER lifeguard Will Simmons
has been awarded the prestigious
Top Candidate honour at Surf Life
Saving New Zealand’s national
lifeguard school.
Simmons was one of 15 candidates
chosen to attend the school
from all over New Zealand and one
of only three from the South Island.
The school is needed as preparation
towards achieving the advanced
lifeguard award, the highest surf
lifesaving qualification in New
Zealand.
The Waihi beach event involved
days that started early and finished
late. All the candidates were put
into high-stress situations including
orchestrated patrol, first aid and
search scenarios. They were constantly
tested, observed and evaluated
by staff and instructors, said
SLSNZ national education manager
Belinda Slement.
THE DAYS of having to climb to the top
of a hill or head out onto the water to get
cellphone coverage are gone for some
parts of Banks Peninsula.
Okains Bay and Le Bons Bay now have
cellphone coverage thanks to the Rural
Connectivity Group (RCG) with support
from the Okains Bay community.
Until now, residents have had to go to
the hilltop to get coverage or head out of
the bay by boat.
RCG met a December deadline to
get a tower installed. The group was
contracted by the Government to bring
4G to rural New Zealand, but before
it can set up sites it needs the help of
rural communities, iwi, local businesses,
Councils and landowners.
The new Okains Bay tower is on
Turner to push for walkway completion
• By Tony Simons
THE NEW manager of the
Rod Donald Trust, former city
councillor Andrew Turner, has
declared he wants to see the
Head to Head Walkway between
Godley Head and Adderley
Head near to completion within
the next three years, and he has
a plan that might just see that
happen.
Turner is
pushing for
the Te Pātaka
o Rākaihautū
Banks Peninsula
Community
Board to
partner with
the trust to
Andrew
Turner
reinvigorate
the project.
The trust
has experience
working with landowners and
community groups creating
access, and can achieve more
than what the city council could
achieve on its own, Turner said.
“Just look at the experience
and success the we have had
securing land and public access
across DOC and private property
for the entire Te Ara Pātaka
track network,” he said.
The Head to Head Walkway
has been an aspirational project
for more than 10 years.
“It is time to see some real
progress and a plan for completion
finalised within the term of
the current council, and within
budget,” Turner said.
The trust can bring a co-ordinated
and joined up approach
to the creation, promotion and
maintenance of the track across
different land ownerships and
would work closely with council
staff and the community board
if a partnership approach were to
be adopted, he said.
The community board has
voted to re-establish a joint
community-council working
party to lead the project but
wants that group to report back
before deciding next steps. That
working party may include the
Rod Donald Trust as well as
various peninsula reserves committees,
residents and business
associations, Te Whaka Ora, and
Rāpaki Rūnanga.
This project could be the
legacy of the current community
COMPLEX:
Some sections
of the Head to
Head Walkway
have been
completed
but others are
missing.
board, Turner said.
Asked if he is concerned about
money for the project being
pulled by the city council in its
search for savings Turner said:
“If we are talking about value for
money and getting things done
quickly and more cheaply, the
project aligns exactly with the
conversation being held around
the city council table right now.
“It is my hope the focus will be
on the application of funds to get
value for money, rather than a
budget reduction.’’
The walkway was first mooted
back in 2010. Turner was on
the community board and city
council over the intervening
period and admits progress has
at times been slowed, by earthquake
related disruption, budgetary
constraints, and resourcing
constraints.
“This is a complex project,” he
said.
Some sections of the route,
about 29km, already exist as
public walking tracks but access
is needed over other public
and private land to fill in the
gaps. Some existing sections of
the route also need upgrading,
according to city council head of
parks, Andrew Rutledge.
The missing parts are from
Rapaki to Sandy Bay, and from
Ohinetahi-Allandale across the
Teddington Flats and around to
Charteris Bay.
A third section is also needed
from Purau to Adderley Head.
The track will be about 70km
long when completed.
The city council’s current
capital spending programme
has $550,000 allocated for the
walkway over the next three
years, but there are no estimates
for the total cost to completion
because that is dependent on
route options and design still to
be determined, Rutledge said.
SUMNER SURF lifeguards have
been recognised by Surf Life
Saving New Zealand for a day of
rescuing multiple surfers who got
caught in a rip near Scarborough.
The Rescue of the Month drama
unfolded at about noon on
November 12 after Sumner club
president, Wayne Simmons, who
was off-duty at the time, spotted
several surfers stuck in a rip near
the clocktower struggling to get
back to shore.
He called the club and three
inflatable rescue boats were sent to
help while Simmons co-ordinated
from the shore.
One IRB, with lifeguards Blake
Hickford and Kate Suter on board,
rescued four surfers, but then
more got into trouble. A second
IRB was then called in to help,
then a third.
They then rotated through the
rest of the day rescuing multiple
surfers who continued to get into
difficulties.
Even the Coastguard Sumner
Lifeboat was brought in to assist.
• From page 1
“They also had to complete the
practical elements in challenging
conditions with a big swell running
directly into Waihi beach,”
she said.
At the end, Simmons, who lives
A young child was also rescued at
Sumner beach after being swept
into a hole.
In all, 21 lifeguards were
involved in rescues, on patrol,
in IRBs or co-ordinating the response
on the day.
Club captain Kate Suter said
it was a superb example of
coordination and co-operation
between clubs.
BEACH-GOERS at Sumner
and Taylors Mistake have been
commended for their behaviour
in the water over the Christmas-
New Year break, but that doesn’t
mean lifeguards haven’t been
busy.
December 29 was the busiest
day at Christchurch beaches
with the city sweltering with 30
deg C at times. Taylors Mistake
Surf Lifesaving Club president
Vivienne Bickle said it was so
busy that day the club had to call
in help from members who knew
the beach well.
Patrol manager Ian Rae said
there were seven incidents at the
beach that day but most were
not “hands in the air’’ rescues.
They involved lifeguards seeing
dangerous situations developing,
being pro-active and jumping on
their boards to move swimmers
back between the flags, he said.
“Preventative actions are what
save lives. We don’t want things
to get to the point where there is
a major incident,” he said.
“Conditions at Taylors have
been challenging with some big
swells then a quiet period then
more big swells,” he said.
“It means the beach keeps
changing so we have to reposition
the flags quite often.”
One unorthodox rescue on
Boxing Day saved an old dog
walking with its owners around
towards Boulder Bay. When they
got to Harris Bay the dog simply
decided it wasn’t going any further,
said Rae, so we needed to
send an inflatable rescue boat to
pick it up from the shore.
At Sumner, lifeguards were
patrolling Christmas Eve,
Christmas Day, New Years Eve,
New Years Day and all the days
in between.
Club captain Kate Suter said
it was good to see people swimming
between the flags, knowing
their limits and listening to the
advice of the lifeguards.
As the weather warmed up the
water got up to about 18 deg C
and, while there were rescues at
Sumner and Scarborough, Suter
said they were mostly people getting
out of their depth and being
swept off their feet into holes
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Learn the three Rs to keep
lifeguards’ workload down
or rips. Lifeguards were able
to get out to them quickly and
assist them back to shore with no
issues, said Suter.
For the remainder of the
summer holidays the advice to
swimmers is the same.
Always swim between the flags
and, if you find yourself stuck in
a rip, follow the three Rs.
• Relax and float to conserve
energy.
• Raise your hand to signal for
help.
• Ride the rip out until help
arrives or you can swim back to
shore.
A FREE, community-led running
event at Bottle Lake Forest Park is
proving to be a big hit.
About 100 runners on average
set out from the Broad Park car
the 5km parkrun each Saturday
morning.
Volunteer Lisa McGonigle
said up to 120 runners have
previously taken part in the
event. There were fewer than this
at its 15th run on Saturday due to
the wet weather, but McGonigle
and the other organisers knew
people would still show up.
enabled families to find their
personal histories without
leaving home and this has
resulted in a growing interest in
this area,” Brittenden said.
“I am constantly being
contacted by folk from all
over the world regarding their
historic connection with Le
Bons, either seeking information
or sharing their own research.”
This edition features a
chapter on the quite extensive
Scandinavian migration to New
Zealand that saw around 25
families settle at Le Bons in the
1870s.
“The New Zealand
Government actively recruited
immigrants from Scandinavia
at this time, and much has been
written about the settlements
of Dannevirke, Norsewood and
Ekatahuna in the North Island,”
said Brittenden.
“However, significant numbers
came to Lyttelton and ended
up in Robinsons Bay and then
on to Le Bons to work in the
sawmills, where they bought
SETTLERS: The Condon family at their Le Bons Bay home
in the 1870s. Alfred Condon was the bays first mailman,
walking through the bush to Takamatua and back three
times a week to collect and deliver mail. Left – Garry
Brittenden has been gathering and publishing the history
of the bay for 45 years.
land and settled. Denmark had
a disastrous war with Prussia
in the 1860s, and many Danes
lost land as a result. In Le Bons,
four Danes who served together
in the war came out with their
families and ended up with
adjoining farms in the bay.”
One of the Danish families,
the Hemmingsens, are holding
a family reunion at Le Bons
later this month. While there
is extensive evidence of Maori
occupation of the bay for
hundreds of years prior to
European settlement, no Maori
lived in the bay when John Cuff
brought his sawmill up the Le
Bons Bay stream in 1857 and
began the clearance of the dense
native forest.
The sawmills did not just bring
a steady stream of settlers to the
bay, the clearance of the forest
enabled dozens of small farms to
be established, accompanied by
thriving cocksfoot and cheesemaking
industries.
into history of bay
FRONTIER: A shot of Le Bons Bay beach taken in 1952.
Unlike the other eastern
bays, Le Bons never had large
land holders, so by 1890 the
bay supported more than 300
people. It is no surprise then
that their numerous offspring
in the generations that followed
maintained a continued interest
in their forebears. The book also
features some wonderful sections
from diaries and recollections of
the early settlers. Henry Drury
was a bushman in the bay in the
1870s, and his stories of whiskey
stills, horse racing and bush life
paint an evocative picture of a
world we can only imagine.
The new edition also contains
many additional historic photos
that date back to the 1870s and
reveal an intimate look at a small
rural community and its changes
over time. The Elliot family came
to Le Bons in the 1860s and one
of their descendants, Garry Elliot,
has a wonderful collection of early
some of which appear in the book.
NZ aviation tech company develops
pilotless planes to fight bushfires
• By Kurt Bayer
A CHRISTCHURCH-based
aviation technology company
is developing pilotless planes to
fight bushfires from the skies.
Skybase is converting aircraft
to fly remotely in a world-leading
move designed to revolutionise
firefighting.
It involves putting high-tech
artificial-intelligence computer
systems inside Kiwi-made
Fletcher top-dressing planes
and keeping pilots safely behind
computer screens on the ground.
The move will mean when
conditions – such as poor weather,
fading light or firefighter
fatigue – ground planes and
helicopters, the converted drone
aircraft can still take to the air
and drop vast litres of water and
fire retardant on flames and
hotspots.
In a New Zealand-first, the
Civil Aviation Authority granted
Skybase certification in May
2022 to carry out remotely operated
test flights on the condition
a pilot was on board.
“That was a key moment for
aviation in New Zealand,” said
Skybase founder Michael Read.
The company, which was
founded in Christchurch in 2017,
has been testing the technology
out of Rangiora airfield.
Its long-term vision is for the
aircraft to be completely autonomous.
But for now, they are
reliant on pilots to supervise and
step in when needed.
The remote pilot on the
ground has to be qualified in the
New Zealand-made Pacific Aerospace
Fletcher - often described
as a “workhorse” utility plane
– but can be based anywhere in
the world.
Pilots fly as if they’re inside
the cockpit, talking to air traffic
control, and watching several
monitors.
“You’re doing everything from
the ground that you would do
from the air,” said Read, a former
TECHNOLOGY: Michael Read, founder of Skybase, says the technology to convert planes to drones could be used across
many different sectors including fires such as the 2017 outbreak on the Port Hills.
PHOTO :GEORGE HEARD
Royal Australian Air Force pilot.
The ground technology is connected
to the aircraft through
several communication modes,
including tracking antennae, satellite
and mobile phone network.
And the development of Elon
Musk’s Starlink satellite internet
constellation could prove a “gamechanger”
in the future.
Read envisages the flight
autonomy upgrade system for
existing aircraft, dubbed SOFI,
also becoming useful for other
sectors, including agriculture,
mapping, surveillance, cargo
operations, first responders,
medevac missions and natural
disaster responses.
The plane can carry 1500kg
and could air-drop emergency
supplies after floods or cyclones
and in weather deemed too dangerous
for manned planes.
“There are a lot of reasons to
do this technology other than
aerial firefighting,” Read said.
“But right now, that is the focus
because [fires] are extremely
dangerous and increasingly
prevalent.”
He cites key statistics to support
his arguments, including
that around 80 per cent of all
aviation accidents are caused by
humans and, in 2021, 17 per cent
of the world’s carbon emissions
came from uncontained bushfires.
The ability for pilotless planes
to be on standby 24/7 could help
eliminate wildfires “as a catastrophic
threat”, Read said.
“Speed is the key to fighting
uncontrolled fires.”
But about 75 per cent of the
time, safety regulations around
risk factors such as poor visibility
mean planes are grounded
while the fire burns on.
Most blazes start late in the
day when it’s hot and thunderstorms
are active.
And overnight, when manned
aircraft aren’t able to fly, can be
the best time to fight fires, with
lower winds and temperatures.
“This technology changes
what is possible, unlocking flight
at times or in places where it
wouldn’t otherwise be possible if
a pilot was on board. It increases
safety and capability, but also
commercial returns,” said Read.
“Not having a human pilot on
board means the risk benefit is
very favourable.”
Skybase expects SOFI units
to be rolled out commercially in
2024. – NZ Herald
Race track tribute for cancer campaigner
• By Barry Clarke
WHEN GREG Manson’s horses
step out onto the race track
they carry with them a very
special memory to a mate who
is remembered for his fight
for better cancer care in New
Zealand.
That special memory is
Manson’s colours – the initials
BV emblazoned on black, red
and white.
BV stands for Blair Vining,
who became a national
identity as he battled terminal
bowel cancer, presenting a
140,000-strong petition to
Parliament with his wife Melissa,
three months before he died in
October 2019.
The black, red and white are
the colours of Vining’s beloved
rugby club Midland in Winton.
A lock, who played about 400
senior matches, Vining was
renowned for his toughness.
“He was a strong man; my
horses have to be tough like he
was,” Manson said.
On Sunday, the colours were to
the fore when veteran and tough
as teak pacer Copperfield Rose
finished third at the Motukarara
trots.
“They are very proud
moments,” said Manson, who
trains a small team at Lincoln.
Each time Manson’s horses
win, there is a tribute to Vining
in the winner’s circle.
“Blair’s mentioned every
time. I love it . . . the awareness
of cancer, the hospital,” Manson
said of the Southland Charity
Hospital Trust, established in
2019 following Vining’s highlypublicised
battle to provide free
services to those in the southern
half of New Zealand who are
unable to access care through
the public or private health
systems. While Copperhead
Rose is probably in the twilight
of his career, another Manson
pacer Franco Marek could carry
the colours to the top.
“Copperhead Rose has raced
for six years. He’s such a tough
animal. A bit of that is rubbing
off on Frankie,” he said of Franco
Marek.
Franco Marek won over
Christmas New Year at
Motukarara, his fifth win from
just seven starts.
“He is still just a boy, but he
is a smart horse. We have been
patient with him and tried to give
him time to mature. He has got a
wee way to go, but he knows what
it is about,” Manson said.
“He is getting more
professional every day. The plan
is to go all of the way with him.”
Manson became mates
with Vining when he lived
in Southland through their
respective wives Karla and
Melissa who were friends.
The Mansons and Vinings
and a handful of other families
would go to Twizel on holiday
each year.
“We still do that with Blair’s
family,” Manson said.
Vining was not a horse racing
person as such. But when
Manson decided to get back
into training after an absence
from the game he suggested to
Vining that he wanted to change
his original colours to the BV
on black, red and white. Vining
agreed.
Vining’s family now take a
big interest in the horses which
carry their colours , keeping
up with how they are going
and “putting a dollar each way on
them.”
Treasures from the Past:
The Sinclair’s Sailing Tradition
THE SINCLAIR family
have a long association with
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour,
with the Scotsman William
Sinclair setting up his shipwright
business in Dampier Bay near the
dry dock in 1870.
With his son Jimmy, the Sinclairs
were famous for their love
of yacht building and racing, with
their yachts Little Wonder and
Mascotte competing with their
arch rival, the Miller’s Pastime
through the 1880s and 90s.
This competitive tradition
carried on through to the next
generations with the founding of
the Canterbury Yacht and Motor
Boat Club in 1921. Of the Club’s
40 founding members, seven were
Sinclairs, with Elliot Sinclair’s
uncle, Sam Sinclair, sailing the
“Linnet” under the Club’s flag in
the 1922 Sanders Memorial Cup
in Dunedin.
True to his family’s tradition,
Elliot Sinclair was also an accomplished
yachtsman who notably
won five consecutive Sanders
Cups for the Club and Canterbury
from 1932 to 1936.
In November 1953, this unrivalled
veteran yachtsman again
won the privilege to defend the
Sanders Cup for Canterbury, sailing
Genie in the trials off Lyttelton,
and was runner-up in the
hotly contested Sanders Cup of
January 1954, won by Otago’s If.
Mini with strong performance pedigree
WHEN BMW bought into the
Mini brand in 1996 it embraced
the history and concept of the
early Austin and Morris cars.
So much so, that even the high
performance name of Cooper has
been retained over the years.
Cooper harks back to 1948
when father and son Charles and
John Cooper were making open
wheel cars for motorsport, to
which they had much success.
The British Motor Corporation
(and British Leyland) capitalised
on that success and badged many
of the Mini variants Cooper and
Cooper S, both had significant
performance enhancements over
the standard models. Racing and
rallying success followed, a Mini
with either badge was sought
after and desirable.
As tribute to the Mini Cooper’s
illustrious past, today’s Mini
range incorporates several John
Cooper Works-badged models
– three-door, Countryman and
Clubman, all commonly referred
to as JCW.
This evaluation focuses on the
Clubman, although all immediately
impress with their sporty
looks and keen performance, the
latter thanks to a turbocharged,
2-litre four-cylinder engine that is
rated at 225kW and 450Nm.
These figures are up with the
competition in terms of power
output placing the JCW quite
squarely in the hot hatchback
market, although with its clever
twin opening rear door arrangement
it isn’t exactly a hatchback.
As the badge Clubman suggests,
it’s a slimmed down versatile
station wagon.
If the engine size and figures
look familiar, it is much the same
power plant that can be found in
BMW’s M135i and, as such, the
JCW has phenomenal performance
on tap. It is an engine that
works effectively through the
entire rev band and doesn’t need
to be constantly driven towards
the top end. Drive is channelled
through an eight-speed automatic
transmission. It is characterised
by quick, strong shifts and ratios
in the early gears that are biased
towards quick acceleration.
The JCW Mini is quick, it will
lunge to 100km/h from a standstill
in 5.1sec, and will complete
an 80-120km/h overtaking
manoeuvre in 4sec, all of the time
enticing the driver with a wilful
engine sound and exhaust growl
which pops and crackles with
each gearshift.
BMW also lists a 7.7-litre per
100km/h combined cycle fuel
usage rating. That correlates well
with the 9.6l/100km showing on
the test car’s trip readout and the
6l/100km instantaneous figure
UNIQUE: The Mini Clubman has two rear doors that open
horizontally, exposing a useful load area.
MINI JOHN COOPER WORKS: Engine from BMW’s M-Sport division.
travelling at 100km/h (engine
speed 1800rpm).
I took the test car on the
fabulous roads that make up
State Highway 72 (Scenic Route),
through the tight and twisty
roads out of the river gorges
the JCW provided accurate and
stable handling. Grip in the first
instance is supplied by low profile
Bridgestone rubber (235/35 x
19in), and if you add in the benefits
of drive to all four corners
through a fully independent
suspension you end up with a car
which is delightful and capable in
a corner.
Power to the rear is quite strong
and it gives the false impression
that it is rear drive only. Just when
you think oversteer can be initiated
out of a corner the front bites
and that force is negated. However,
it is a wonderful handling feeling
and certainly draws the driver
into the feel of the car. That’s what
buying a sports car represents,
as a driver you want to feel fully
involved within the unique characteristics
of it, the JCW makes
you feel special, simply because it
is a very special car.
The balance of power and
handling is insightful, the JCW is
eager, especially in sport mode,
but there is also normal mode
which encourages moderate
accelerator use in order to glean
those amazing fuel usage figures.
• Price – BMW Mini John
Cooper Works, $79,650
• Dimensions – Length,
4266mm; width, 1800mm;
height, 1440mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
1998cc, 225kW, 450Nm,
eight-speed automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 5.1sec
• Fuel usage – 7.7l/100km
One thing any prospective buyer
would need to consider is that
the ride is firm, sure BMW have
done well to build compliance
into the system, and there’s just
enough suspension so that road
ripples and ruts are absorbed, but
with the low profile tyres there is
a constant reminder that this is
a car that is built so that corners
can be challenged without a handling
compromise.
On that subject, I must mention
as well, the quality of the
brakes, huge vented discs are
fitted at each corner providing
immense braking power. There
needs to be strong retardation,
the JCW fair flies between corners,
but slowing and stopping is
quick and constant.
Inside, the JCW gets all of
the trim and specification you’d
expect to find in any BMW, and
it is laid out in the style which is
retrospective making the Mini
concept true to the past and very
much a standout.
The JCW Clubman is priced
from $75,940, as with all BMW
product there are a vast array of
specification and trim options
depending on your taste and
need, and the evaluation car was
carrying several extras. However,
it is still priced firmly amidst its
competition.
There are many high
performance models that share
similar performance around
the same price, but the Mini
is much different in terms
of styling, I particularly like
the rear doors system and,
of course, I like the interior
design details that hark back to
the 1960s. What I’m referring
to there is the switchgear and
toggle arrangements that form
part of the centre console dash
panel, they look and feel great
to manipulate. That attention to
detail is something to treasure.
When I met my wife 42 years
ago she had a Morris Mini and
it served her well for many
years. Every time I’m in a new
generation model I relate to that
early 850. Sure, the Mini today
is a vastly different in terms of
technology, but there are many
elements that transport you back
to that era.
