WHEN NGAIO Marsh village 

resident George Beard reached 

out to support a women’s refuge 

in the eastern suburbs with 

donated food, his kindness was 

welcomed. 

The women at Te Whare 

Hauora – including Dale 

Johnson and Rachel Tahuri – 

were thrilled someone 

would contact the refuge, 

seemingly out of the blue, with 

provisions. 

Te Whare Hauora, also 

known as Otautahi Māori 

Women’s Refuge, provides 

confidential ‘safe house’ 

accommodation, specific to 

the needs of Māori women and 

their tamariki who are victims 

of domestic violence. 

Now George plans to approach 

other residents from Ngaio 

Marsh, in Papanui, and possibly 

other Ryman Healthcare villages 

to gather further donations for 

the refuge. 

For a long time, George 

helped a women’s refuge 

group on the Gold Coast, so 

when he returned to New 

Zealand it seemed natural to 

continue supporting those in 

need.

– police 

make arrests

RESIDENTS IN the northern 

suburbs were shot at by airsoft 

guns over the New Year, leading 

to two arrests. 

Police stormed a Northcote Rd, 

Bishopdale, property on December 

27 searching for a man shooting 

BB pellets at passing cars. 

Resident Amanda was awoken 

by the sound of police at 1am in 

the morning “banging the hell” 

out of her door. 

“They said there was somebody 

shooting at cars with a BB gun, so 

they searched my house looking 

for a young male with a gun,” she 

told the NZ Herald. 

She said she felt intimidated as 

six officers searched her home and 

yard. 

Amanda was shown a tiny rosegold 

bullet, which police believed 

was one of many fired at vehicles. 

“I don’t have a front fence so it 

could have been anybody,” she 

said. 

A police spokesperson said 

there were “few further lines of 

inquiry”, which halted the progress 

of the investigation. 

However, in Riccarton the next 

day at least one pedestrian was 

injured after being shot in the arm 

by an airsoft-type gun fired out of 

a car window. 

The police spokesperson said 

two men aged 34 and 26 were arrested 

over the incident.

Imitation firearms can cause damage – police

On New Year’s day, someone reported 

a slug pellet or something 

similar flew past them as they 

drove down State Highway 74, 

near Mulberry Place in Redwood. 

A police spokesperson said 

limited lines of inquiry meant the 

investigation faltered. 

“If anyone does have any information 

that may help police, they 

are asked to get in touch,” the 

spokesperson said. 

Based on recent statistics, police 

understand there has not been 

any notable increase in imitation 

firearm incidents in the Christchurch 

area. 

“However, police would like to 

remind people to take extra care 

and note that imitation firearms 

can cause damage when used 

inappropriately,” a spokesperson 

said.

as part of the deal when he 

moved into Ngaio Marsh and 

decided he would like to convert 

it into food for the refuge. A visit 

this month to the Stanmore Rd 

New World supermarket saw 

him pick up $800 of meat and 

$200 of frozen vegetables. 

The produce was handed over 

to Johnson, the manager for Te 

Whare Hauora, and Tauhiri, 

a residential and community 

worker, to use over the holiday 

period. 

Johnson said the food donation 

went far, particularly during the 

festive season and new year, when 

families are under pressure. 

“This food went straight into 

our safe house. So families 

that come in, sometimes in the 

middle of the night, they don’t 

have anything. 

“They’re standing up in what 

they’ve got pretty much – it’s a 

very traumatic time for those 

families,” Johnson said. 

“To be able to put food on the 

table and make sure there’s a 

warm, safe space for them to go 

and that they’ve got food in their 

belly is our main objective for 

these whanau referred to our safe 

house.” 

Once families are settled, the 

refuge team members work with 

individual women and their 

tamariki to prioritise their needs 

and help them achieve what they 

want. 

The work includes navigating 

legal systems and applying for 

protection orders, custody orders 

and tenancy orders. 

They also liaise with early 

childhood education centres or 

schools. 

“Whatever the need is we are 

there to support them,” Johnson 

said. 

Te Whare Hauora, is an 

independent refuge contracted 

to provide Government-funded 

refuge services in Christchurch. 

As a Kaupapa Māori Service 

it’s an affiliated member of 

the National Collective of 

independent Women’s Refuge.

Surf lifesaver earns top honour

A FORMER Shirley Boys’ High 

student has been awarded the 

prestigious Top Candidate 

honour at Surf Life Saving New 

Zealand’s national lifeguard 

school. 

Will Simmons was 14 when 

he started his lifeguard journey 

at the Sumner Surf Life Saving 

Club. 

Five years later, he became 

one of the 15 candidates chosen 

to attend the school from all 

over New Zealand and one 

of only three from the South 

Island. 

The school is needed as 

preparation towards achieving 

the advanced lifeguard award, 

the highest surf lifesaving 

qualification in New Zealand. 

The Waihi beach event involved 

days that started early 

and finished late. All the candidates 

were put into high-stress 

situations including orchestrated 

patrol, first aid and search 

scenarios. They were constantly 

tested, observed and evaluated 

by staff and instructors, said SL- 

SNZ national education manager 

Belinda Slement. 

“They also had to complete the 

practical elements in challenging 

conditions with a big swell running 

directly into Waihi beach,” 

she said. 

At the end, Simmons, who 

lives in Redcliffs, was chosen as 

the standout. 

“Everything about the school 

was challenging,” he said. 

“Many of the tasks really put 

me out of my comfort zone but 

I enjoyed the theory and practical 

elements equally. I learned so 

many new skills and knowledge, 

all of which I can take back to 

my club’s patrols to help develop 

our lifeguards.” 

Simmons comes from a surfing 

and surf lifesaving family. 

His father Wayne is president of 

the club, mother Tracy Blackwood 

along with brother Jack 

who is also a lifeguard. 

He intends to continue as a 

lifeguard for as long as he can. 

“Once you are in it you are in it 

for life,” he said.

Turner pushes for walkway completion

within the next three years – and 

has a plan to make it happen. 

Turner is pushing for the Te

the project.

promotion and maintenance of 

the track across different land 

ownerships and could work 

closely with city council staff 

and the community board if 

a partnership approach was 

adopted, he said.

Asked if he is concerned about 

money for the project being 

pulled by the city council in its 

search for savings, Turner said: 

“If we are talking about value for 

money and getting things done 

quickly and more cheaply, the 

project aligns exactly with the 

conversation being held around 

the city council table right now. 

“It is my hope the focus will be 

ACC, WINZ quotes, Southern Cross Easy-claim 

on the application of funds to get 

value for money, rather than a 

budget reduction.’’ 

The walkway was first mooted 

back in 2010. 

Turner was on the community 

board and city council at the 

time and admits progress was 

slow at times due to earthquakerelated 

disruption, budgetary 

constraints and resource 

constraints. 

“This is a complex project,” he 

said. 

Some sections of the route, 

about 29km, already exist as 

public walking tracks, but access 

is needed over other public and 

private land to fill in the gaps. 

Some existing sections of the 

route also need to be upgraded, 

city council head of parks, 

Andrew Rutledge said. 

The missing parts are from 

Rapaki to Sandy Bay and from 

Ohinetahi-Allandale across the 

Teddington Flats and around to 

Charteris Bay. 

A third section is also needed 

from Purau to Adderley Head. 

The track will be about 70km 

when completed. 

The city council’s current 

capital spending programme 

has $550,000 allocated for the 

walkway over the next three 

years. But there are no estimates 

for the total cost to completion 

because it was dependent on 

route options and their design 

which were still to be determined, 

Rutledge said.

Forest parkrun draws a 

crowd despite weather

A FREE, community-led 

running event at Bottle 

Lake Forest Park is proving 

to be a big hit. 

About 100 runners on 

average set out from the 

Broad Park car park near 

Waimairi Beach for the 

5km parkrun each Saturday 

morning. 

Volunteer Lisa McGonigle 

said up to 120 runners 

have previously taken part 

in the event. There were 

fewer than this at its 15th 

run on Saturday due to the 

wet weather, but McGonigle 

and the other organisers 

knew people would still 

show up. 

“It was kind of drizzling 

when we started at 8am 

and it was raining quite 

hard by the time we finished,” 

she said. 

“We know that some 

people would absolutely 

turn up – rain, hail or 

shine. And they did indeed.” 

In total, 57 runners 

and about 12 volunteers 

attended. 

The Linwood resident 

said the sense of 

community is among the 

main reasons she enjoys 

the parkrun. 

The runners and 

volunteers head to a nearby 

cafe after the Broad Park 

parkrun. 

The group aims to 

extend the event after the 

one-year trial ends on 

October.

Car stolen but slight 

drop in number of thefts

POLICE ARE reporting 

a small drop in the 

number of car thefts in 

Christchurch, but that’s 

little comfort to woman 

who woke to find her 

daughter’s Mazda had been 

stolen last week. 

Provisional figures show 

there were around 414 car 

thefts reported in the city 

in December. 

That compares to 459 

reports in October and 455 

in November, where in one 

week alone the police received 

just over 150 reports 

of vehicles being stolen. 

In early November, Canterbury 

Metro Area Commander 

Superintendent 

Lane Todd described this 

as a “significant increase” 

in thefts, mostly attributed 

to recent youth offending. 

A police spokesperson 

said the number of vehicles 

reported stolen in December 

was down nearly 10 

percent on October. 

They said while it was 

“pleasing to see” that theft 

numbers appeared to be 

decreasing, the December 

figure was still provisional 

and could change once 

people returned from their 

Christmas breaks. 

“If you are returning 

home from your holidays 

over the next few weeks 

and notice that your car 

has been stolen, please 

report it to police.” 

“It is concerning when 

any vehicle at all is stolen, 

and we know that this is 

incredibly frustrating for 

vehicle owners,” they said. 

The police spokesperson 

said they wanted to remind 

the public to be extra 

vigilant around securing 

their vehicles, ensuring all 

valuables were removed. 

“If you are parking on 

the road, then please look at 

investing in a wheel lock. It 

is a cheap but effective way 

of helping to prevent your 

car being stolen.”

their Cashmere house. 

It was the second time 

the car had been targeted

hadn’t been so lucky. 

She said her daughter’s 

car was found the following 

day abandoned in 

Opawa, with the engine 

still running. 

Leah said it was incredibly 

frustrating that the car 

had been stolen for what 

she believed was simply a 

joyride. 

“They’ve actually done 

some damage under the 

car. God knows what 

they’ve been doing to it, 

if that car could talk, the 

stories it would tell. 

“Now my daughter’s 

without a car, she’s got to 

get to and from work, uni 

is going to start soon, so 

fingers crossed we can fix 

it, rather than write it off.” 

Leah said vehicle theft 

was causing disruption to 

residents’ lives and they 

had now installed security 

cameras at their house. 

She said police did 

appear to be trying to 

tackle the problem, as 

they had arranged for her 

daughter’s car to be towed 

for a forensic inspection.

New Year 

New Opportunities 

Welcome to 2023: a year that, like its 

recent predecessors, will have its very 

own signature. 

That combination of continuing market changes 

(think price), challenges (think interest rates 

plus inflationary pressure) and beauty (or 

opportunity, as I like to call it). 

I’m curious about the year ahead. We have an 

election, always interesting, given its potential 

to hamper major decision-making at both an 

individual and a national level, and we have that 

vacuum created when everyone is trying to pick 

the bottom of the market and the likelihood of 

an upswing. 

Which, I might add, will eventually happen, as 

it has every other time there’s been a slump in 

activity – repositioning, as some industry experts 

like to describe the current market. 

Last year, at about this time, I looked at my very 

old and battered crystal ball hoping for some 

sort of insight befitting my now 29-year tenure. 

I noted that experts were at odds, with opinions 

that ranged from a 4% decrease in prices 

across the board to others thinking that the 

astronomical gains of the 2020/’21 period could 

continue. In retrospect, it looks like no-one 

realised the depth of the correction we would go 

on to experience – or the level of zeal the Reserve 

Bank would bring to the country with its ‘stop 

spending’ and ‘beware the property market is 

unsustainable’ mandate. 

Frequent increases in our OCR levels, interest 

rate rises (with more to come) have all but 

brought to a halt that runaway horse we were 

riding, one which had indulged itself on huge 

increases in property values, cheap money and 

eye-watering auction clearance rates. 

So where are we going? 

A lot of the dialogue is once again mixed, so 

maybe rather than look at data (which can be 

confusing no matter how experienced you are) 

I’d prefer to look at opportunities that are being 

created. 

I’m thinking about you, buyers! 

You are the lucky ones in this orbit of the 

marketing cycle. 

Do not squander your chances while standing on 

the side-line thinking, I’ll wait it out, I’ll squeeze 

every last ounce of opportunity out of the seller. 

You have so much on your side, especially 

choice, that most exquisite of factors which over 

the last few years has been such a rarity. 

There are large numbers of properties on or 

coming to the market. On December 19th, 2022, 

there were 1,917 Christchurch homes for sale. 

Owners are also more educated as to prices 

now, many doing their best with both their 

presentation and their negotiation opportunities, 

and you, our dedicated buyers, have the chance 

to lock in your interest rate. 

Make the decision to buy and get on, or further 

up, the property ladder, because you certainly 

have that chance. 

It’s perhaps a fact of human nature that even 

when you have everything you could possibly 

want, you’ll still go for more. That’s the dilemma 

I’ve seen with some buyers as they challenge 

prices, even those that are vastly reduced, whilst 

insisting on extra chattels to be included in the 

sale. Rather than the property, we’re talking 

fridges, spas, trampolines and cushions. 

But there’s a flipside here. Recently (January 5th, 

2023), CoreLogic noted that although there’s 

been a nationwide drop in prices, slowing in 

December, Christchurch bucked the trend (the 

only main centre to do so). 

Here’s the clincher: Christchurch is an incredibly 

affordable city with attractive lifestyle options, 

so despite everything that’s happening we are 

still fortunate here. 

With that, I’m keen to make the most of what’s 

ahead. I’ve planned a massive year prioritizing 

health and wellbeing, doing great business and 

hopefully getting out of my comfort zone.

at Brighton Mall to ensure 

it is readily available in 

an emergency as visitor 

numbers increase.

trustee Penny Wright, 

who has extensive medical 

training, campaigned for 

a new automated external 

defibrillator (AED), paid 

for by ratepayers, which 

could be accessed 24 hours 

a day. 

The other defibrillators 

near Brighton Mall are not 

accessible after hours. 

The new AED, located 

in the PO Box office on 

Carnaby Lane, analyses 

a person’s heart rhythm 

and sends an electric pulse 

if it has stopped beating 

normally. 

Without CPR or a 

defibrillator, the chances of 

a person surviving severe 

cardiac arrest decreases 10 

per cent a minute. 

Said Wright: “[Business

Young hopefuls out to impress

THE BEST young netballers 

in the city will be hoping to 

impress the New Zealand 

secondary school selectors at a 

national development camp in 

Ashburton. 

A majority of the 15 players 

selected from the Mainland 

area, which is made up of 17 

netball centres from Canterbury, 

Tasman, Malborough and 

the West Coast, are from the 

Christchurch and Selwyn netball 

centres. 

Ninety secondary school players 

were picked in December to 

attend one of the three camps 

taking place across New Zealand. 

The players will undergo movement 

competency screening, 

skill development and tournament 

match play. The Mainland 

representatives and 15 Southern 

players will attend the camp in 

Ashburton from January 20-22. 

LOOKING IN: Maddy Laing 

is hoping to impress the 

New Zealand secondary 

school selectors at an 

upcoming national 

development camp. 

The camps are the first step on 

an elite path for young netballers 

still at high school. 

It will be the second consecutive 

camp for Sienna Stowers- 

Smith (STAC), Madi Smith 

(CGHS), and Maddy Laing, who 

also participated last January. 

Maddy, who plays for the 

Halswell Rugby League Netball 

Club, said she is feeling confident 

after going through “a lot harder” 

selection process than last year. 

“This year it was different 

. . . everyone who wanted to be 

selected participated at a camp in 

Rangiora with (Mainland Tactix 

assistant coach) Tania Hoffman. 

From there, another camp was 

held with people chosen from the 

first one . . . that was at a higher 

level.” 

“I was very nervous last year, 

but now that I’m . . . in that older 

year group I feel more confident 

for this year’s camp,” she said. 

The 16-year-old said the skills 

she learnt at the 2022 camp 

helped her in the following 

season. 

“When it came to my season, 

I found playing with new people 

so much easier after having to 

meet new people and play with 

them at the camp,” she said. 

Former Central Pulse assistant 

and current NZSS head coach 

Pelesa Semu will lead the camps 

with former Silver Ferns and 

Southern Steel assistant coach Jo 

Morrison. Maddy, who plays in 

the midcourt, is looking forward 

to working with both coaches 

again, particularly on defence. 

“They’re really specific . . . 

sometimes with club coaches . . . 

you need to ask lots of questions 

to understand. 

“But these coaches were really 

clear and used whiteboards for 

understanding, which was helpful 

visually,” she said. 

The camps in Ashburton, 

Auckland and Hastings over the 

next two weeks signal the start 

of the NZSS team’s campaign. 

The final squad will be selected 

in a few months for the first 

international competition for 

the NZSS team in more than 

two years. For Maddy, there is 

no hesitation on the goal for 

the upcoming netball year: “It’s 

getting into that squad.”

Nutty muesli 

Makes 7 cups 

1 cup each: vanilla bean 

yoghurt, natural muesli 

whipped cream to garnish 

Ingredients 

Directions 

4 cups rolled oats 

½ cup each: pumpkin seeds, 

sunflower seeds 

1 cup pistachio nuts 

170g packet raisins 

2 tsp ground cinnamon 

75gm butter, chopped 

1 cup maple syrup 

Directions 

Preheat the oven to 180 deg C. 

Lightly grease a large roasting 

pan with butter. 

Combine all the dried ingredients 

in a large bowl. 

Place the butter and maple 

syrup in a small saucepan. 

Heat on low until the butter is 

melted. Stir well. Pour into the 

dry ingredients and mix well. 

Pour into the roasting pan. 

Bake for about 20min, stirring 

well every 5min. 

Cool completely, then store in

1. How will the Christchurch 

property market be different in 

2023 from last year? 

With interest rates increasing 

in 2022 the market should have 

somewhat adjusted to these higher 

rates for the near future and will be 

making decisions based on these 

rather than the unknown future. 

2023 might have a few less surprises 

and changes and possibly settle in 

more than the 2022 and previous 

covid markets did. 

2. Best piece of advice to offer those 

considering a move this year? 

Consult those in the know 

with robust knowledge in their 

respective areas. Mortgage brokers 

with experience in more than 

just a good market, a reputable 

conveyancing lawyer and a great 

accountant if you are looking at 

investment also. Also look for a 

knowledgeable and experienced 

real estate consultant to help advise 

you on the process, the current 

market and who can guide you 

through a successful transaction 

from start to finish. With a good 

‘crew’ around you you should be 

able to make confident buying and 

selling decisions.

lol. I don’t see the market changing 

greatly. We are in a very balanced 

market at the moment and feel here 

in Canterbury we will stay the same 

for the next couple of years. 



Do it - it’s a great market. We still 

have a number of buyers wishing to 

purchase on all dollar levels and all 

over the city. If you are thinking of 

selling - talk to us before to get some 

advice on what to do around your 

property to maximise your return 

and also time frames.

Last year we saw a slight 

readjustment in prices unlike other 

major cities that had a big decrease, 

partially due to the interest rate 

hikes, however experts are predicting 

a peak next year and a continued 

drop in house prices. Crucially, 

they’re not expecting to see the 

market ‘crash and burn.’ 

As we look at 2023 , there are 

undoubtedly very real and genuine 

challenges on the horizon, however 

the market here in Christchurch 

is more evenly balanced than it 

has been in sometime, there’s still 

competition which is driving great 



As a homeowner, you want the best 

possible price for your property, my 

advice would be to choose a Sales 

consultant who is experienced and 

knows how to sell in different market 

conditions, who also has a presence 

in the market. I would suggest you 

check their online profile to ensure 

they have the market reach to 

market your home successfully and 

ideally they’ve sold properties similar 

to yours and have buyers waiting in 

the wings...
