Examples of depositional settings are listed in FIGURE 6.16, along with a simplified

description of characteristics found in those settings. The sequence of beds,

or strata, is like pages in a book that record the succession of depositional environments

in an area, and the study of such sequences is called stratigraphy. Further

study in geology will give you additional skills with which you can read those pages,

but even with your basic knowledge, you can interpret the history of sedimentary

rocks in the field. See how far you can get in deciphering the history of the rocks

in Exercise 6.10.
