Dad, daughter set sail for sister city

A FATHER and daughter are 

about to embark on a trip for the 

50th-anniversary celebration 

of Christchurch’s sister city 

relationship with Kurashiki 

City in Japan. But there will 

be no comfortable plane seat 

for Andrew McGeorge and 

daughter Elizabeth (inset). They 

are going by yacht. Weather 

permitting the 10,900km voyage 

will take them two and a half 

months. 

They leave Christchurch for 

Picton later this month, then it 

is onto Whangarei before setting 

off in earnest for Japan via 

Fiji, Guam, Ogasawara (Bonin 

Islands) for the June celebrations. 

The voyage will take two and 

a half months. 

The Seacraft6 37-foot Gannet 

is part of a four vessel sister 

city 50th anniversary yacht 

rally McGeorge has organised. 

The other boats are from New 

Zealand and Australia, but his is 

the only one from Christchurch.

As the effects of growth in population 

and economic activity coupled with the 

rising demand for resources and the 

consequent environmental impacts that 

are changing planet Earth, it is vital we 

start living more sustainably.

We can teach our children about 

sustainability by involving them in 

growing a veggie garden at home and 

taking them to farmers’ markets to 

talk to growers about organic growing 

practices. 

Energy efficiency is another important 

aspect of sustainability we can easily 

introduce into our lifestyles with energyefficient 

appliances, adequate insulation, 

solar water heating, solar photovoltaics 

for power and water catchment systems. 

Of course, a major result of the impact 

our lifestyles has made on the planet 

is climate change brought about by 

carbon emissions. Transport is the 

second largest and fastest growing 

greenhouse gas emissions contributor. 

In this area too, we can make a 

meaningful contribution by reducing our 

dependance on petrol/diesel vehicles. 

Trading in your petrol/diesel vehicles 

for a hybrid or electric vehicle, using 

public transport where possible, biking 

or walking are all sustainable transport 

options to consider. 

Sustainability is a long-term plan to save 

our planet and there will be much more 

about it on display at the Sustainability 

EXPO being held at the Rolleston 

Community Centre on January 21-22. 

Anything from worm farming to the 

latest in electric transport, we hope to

It takes a village to save penguins 

A CONSERVATION trust 

and eco-tourism business have 

welcomed the work done by 

Diana Isaac Retirement Village 

residents to help safeguard a 

precious penguin colony on 

Banks Peninsula. 

Both the Helps Pōhatu 

Conservation Trust and Pōhatu 

Penguins work closely on 

removing predators from the 

peninsula to help maintain little 

penguin. 

The residents from the 

retirement village in Mairehau 

have been making the especiallydesigned 

wooden trap housings 

to catch pests, such as stoats 

and rats. The white-flippered 

penguins nest at Flea Bay near 

Akaroa, where predator control 

has been ongoing for the last 40 

years. 

Geraldine Guillemot-Peacock 

helps maintain the traps on 

behalf of the trust and Pōhatu 

Penguins, which runs wildlife 

and peninsula tours. Recently, 

a group of residents from the 

Diana Isaac village, including 

Bruce Gray, Gary Archbold, 

Norm Reid and Brian Hill 

handed more than 25 traps to 

Guillemot-Peacock. 

The conservation trust protects 

little penguins at Flea Bay and 

the wider Banks Peninsula 

through predator control, 

rehabilitation of injured birds, 

weekly monitoring of the colony, 

surveys and education and

advocacy. The traps have been 

laid for decades, so there is a 

need for replacement for rusted 

mechanisms and the housings. 

There were also traps lost during 

a 2021 floodwater event on the 

property. Stoats are the worst 

pest. Other introduced species 

like rats, hedgehogs, cats, ferrets, 

unsupervised dogs as well as 

human disturbances also impact 

and have led to a decrease in 

penguin numbers. At one point 

the colonies around the Banks 

Peninsula were declining at an 

alarming rate and some have 

disappeared altogether. 

There were 182 traps, split 

across 10 trap lines, within the 

property that stretches hundreds 

of metres inland. 

These traps are checked 

weekly for the pests as well as for 

any required maintenance, so 

damaged traps can be repaired 

and gaps in the plan can be 

filled. 

“We know, for example, stoats 

like going near fence lines… 

Some of the traps are in the bush, 

higher out of the (immediate) 

penguin colony, some are within 

the penguin colony,” Guillemot- 

Peacock said. 

“It’s always nice to have good 

traps that work well.” 

Last year there was a slide 

show and presentation to teach 

Diana Isaac residents about the 

penguins and how they need to 

be protected from such predators. 

Bruce, Gary, Norm and Brian are 

thankful of the help they have 

received from others in a wider 

project, particularly from a team 

of builders at Charles Upham 

village, led by resident Lynn 

Andrews. 

Lynn, a former watchmaker, 

has been helping ensure the 

wooden trap housings are built 

to specification for conservation 

groups. 

Given the staged purchase 

and delivery of wood and other 

screws and partitions for the 

traps, the assembly process has 

been speedy and well executed, 

Bruce says.

Weather will be unpredictable

“Preparations for this trip 

began in 2016 with a nine-month 

refit at our house in Cashmere, 

including rigging, electrical, mechanical 

and plumbing upgrades, 

and this work has carried on to 

this day; it’s a boat so it needs a 

lot of upkeep,” said McGeorge. 

The original owners of the 

Gannet had salied around the 

world in it, 

McGeorge said they were they 

are travelling soon even though 

the celebrations are not till November 

as they want to avoid the 

worst of Japan’s typhoon season. 

“Our first stop is Fiji, where we 

can repair various things before 

the one-month-long voyage to 

Guam.” 

They would avoid the early 

Japanese typhoon season. 

Guam would provide a place 

to stop, resupply and watch the 

weather before they undertake 

the final push to Ogasawara, an 

island group about 1000 kilometres 

directly south of Tokyo. 

From there, it’s about a week’s 

sailing to mainland Japan. 

Once they reach Japan, three of 

the boats will cruise Japan, while 

one will carry onto the Aleutian 

Islands and Alaska. 

Said McGeorge: “We pretty 

much stay there until the typhoon 

season is over. The earliest 

I could leave Japan for the return 

trip home would be December 

2023 but more likely going to be 

February or March of 2024.” 

McGeorge has been sailing 

since he was seven and has sailed 

all around New Zealand and up 

into the Pacific islands, but he is 

under no illusions this will be a 

hard trip for him and Elizabth, 

who has just completed her PhD. 

“My wife Kate, jokingly says 

that all the snack food will be 

gone in the first few days! But 

I know things will break and 

although we carry lots of parts 

and tools (about 500kg) we can’t 

cover everything so there is 

redundancy built in everywhere 

to the systems. “You have to keep 

asking yourself, ‘if this breaks, 

can I fix it or do without it’.” 

Recent cruising guides state the 

established trade wind routes are 

now less reliable and weather is 

less predictable. 

“While we are hoping for 

tailwinds as predicted, we may be 

bashing our way into headwinds 

and seas. The Doldrums near the 

equator, also vary greatly and we 

may have to motor for up to 10 

days as we cross the equator, plus 

it will be hot.” 

The Gannet carries only 300 

litres of water, but McGeorge said 

they can collect rainwater. 

“There will be no long showers, 

and in 37 feet, privacy is an illusion. 

Once in the tropics, keeping 

out of the sun and the air flowing 

through the cabin will be a priority. 

Our initial watch keeping will 

be four hours on, four hours off. “ 

“Gannet has solar panels and 

a wind generator powering her 

electrics, but if it is rough, everything 

becomes hard work; I once 

had to lie down just to brush my 

teeth,” he said. 

McGeorge has a long association 

with Kurashiki. he travelle 

dthere as a 17-year-old. 

After university in Christchurch, 

he returned under the JET 

programme for English tutoring 

at schools where he met his wife 

Kate, who was from Kurashiki’s 

American sister city, Kansas City. 

“Our children were born in 

Kurashiki, we lived there for 10 

years. We owe much to the sister 

city relationship and the 50th 

anniversary deserves something 

big; this is big for me anyway.”

Rapaki trails a hit with 

both walkers and riders 

THOUSANDS OF mountain 

bikers and walkers have 

explored two new trails above 

the lower half of Rapaki Track 

over the summer break. 

The Elevator dual-direction 

mountain bike trail and Kowhai 

walking trail opened in 

early December – and regional 

parks manager Kay Holder 

says they’re helping ease the 

pressure on the busy track. 

“Rapaki Track is one of 

the most popular routes in 

the Port Hills, but in the past 

there have been safety issues, 

as some mountain bikers 

came down at high speeds and 

caused conflicts with walkers 

and runners,” she said. 

“With both the Elevator and 

Kowhai trails opened in time 

for the summer break, we’ve 

noticed a significant decrease 

in traffic on Rapaki Track itself, 

as walkers and mountain 

bikers explore and use the new 

trails. We’re really pleased 

with the positive response 

we’ve received to these new 

trails, and to see thousands of 

people enjoying them over the 

Christmas holiday period.” 

Both trails begin on the lefthand 

side of the track, about 

100m above the end of the 

tarsealed road.

winter spring, following a 

public consultation process 

and hearings panel in 2021. 

More than 300 individuals 

and groups provided feedback 

during the consultation.

Theatre for the community

IT ALL started with a mum who 

realised how quickly the costs 

grow when taking the family to a 

live performance. 

So Hollie Morrison decided to 

establish the Hoon Hay Theatre 

Company in 2020, aiming to 

make theatre accessible and 

affordable for the community. 

“I realised there would be a 

high number of families who

able to justify

show, and this 

in turn spurred 

me to create a 

company focused 

on delivering 

communitybased 

affordable theatre 

performances,” Morrison said. 

Last week the theatre group 

performed Little Red Riding 

Hood and the Three Pigs at the 

Hoon Hay Community Centre 

to 250 audiences for the first 

time. 

Morrison, who is also a writer 

at the theatre, said entry to the 

afternoon show cost a gold coin 

donation for the SPCA. 

“We were able to raised over 

$300 for them. 

“It was our first time selling 

tickets for the evening show, $8 

for adults and children under 13 

were free.” 

The money from the tickets 

will go towards the cost of 

licensing music, show props and 

paint. 

It will also be used to fund 

the theatre’s 2023 Christmas 

Pantomime. 

Said Morrison: “All cast and 

crew were unpaid volunteers 

doing it for the love of the 

performance and we had some 

incredible support from the local 

community and the performing 

community. 

“There is no way we would 

have been able to bring our 

performance to the audience of 

around 250 people without the 

help we received.” 

The theatre also received Off 

The Ground funding from the 

city council and benefited from 

the #HereForGood Warehouse 

sponsorship.

Club, established in 1952, is the 

largest in New Zealand with a 

membership of approximately 

800 members. Our modern 

clubrooms are centrally located in 

Nova Place, off Barbadoes Street, 

with extensive off-street parking 

and consist of three large rooms 

and excellent catering facilities. 

The club offers free lessons 

which are provided by 

professional teachers utilising 

the latest technologies which 

enable practice and review at home on 

the internet. After 11 weeks you will be 

ready to set out on your bridge journey 

armed with enthusiasm and skills to last a 

lifetime. Opportunities to represent your 

club, province or country in a variety of 

grades will be open to you. In addition,

Ingredients 

Melted butter for the pan 

1½ cups salted roasted 

cashews (170g) 

14 Tbsp unsalted butter 

(198g), divided 

1¼ cups packed light 

brown sugar (275g), 

divided 

2 large eggs (100g), cold 

from the refrigerator 

1 Tbsp vanilla extract 

1 cup all-purpose flour 

(135g) 

1 tsp Diamond Crystal 

kosher salt or ½ teaspoon 

Morton kosher salt Flaky 

sea salt (optional) 

Special equipment needed: 

20 x 20cm (8 × 8-inch) 

baking pan 

Directions 

Preheat the oven and 

prepare the pan. Arrange 

an oven rack in the centre 

position and preheat the 

oven to 80 deg C. Line a 

20 x 20cm baking pan, 

preferably metal, with foil, 

pressing it into the corners 

and smoothing it across the 

bottom and up the sides. 

Brush the bottom and sides 

of the foil with a thin layer 

of melted butter and set the 

pan aside. 

Try this optional upgrade 

if your salted roasted 

cashews are on the paler 

side – toast them to further 

develop the flavour. Place 

the nuts on a sheet pan 

and toast until they’re deep 

golden brown and fragrant, 

7-10 minutes, tossing halfway 

through. Let them cool 

completely. 

Chop the cashews. Place 

the cashews on a cutting 

board and chop until the 

largest pieces are about the 

size of a pea. Set aside. 

Make the toffee-covered 

cashews. Line a small sheet 

pan with a silicone baking 

mat or parchment and set it 

next to the stove. Combine 

4 Tbsp (57g) of the butter, 

¼ cup (55g) of the brown 

sugar, and 2 Tbsp (28g) 

water in a medium saucepan. 

Set the saucepan over 

medium heat and bring 

to a boil, stirring with a 

heatproof flexible spatula to 

melt the butter and dissolve 

the sugar. Once the mixture 

is boiling, stir in the 

chopped cashews and cook, 

stirring constantly, until the 

nuts are completely coated 

and there’s no liquid toffee 

oozing across the bottom 

of the saucepan - about 5 

minutes. 

Watch for potential 

pitfalls. If the toffee mixture 

heats too quickly or isn’t 

stirred constantly, the butter 

may separate out and pool 

in the saucepan. If this happens, 

remove the saucepan 

from the heat, add 1 Tbsp 

of water, and stir vigorously 

to dissolve some of the toffee 

and bring the mixture 

back together. Return the 

saucepan to the heat and 

continue to cook. 

Cool the toffee cashews. 

Scrape the cashew mixture 

out on to the prepared sheet 

pan and spread it into a 

thin slab with the spatula, 

then set aside to cool. 

Return the saucepan to the 

stove (no need to wash it). 

Make the batter. Add the 

remaining 10 Tbsp (142g) 

butter to the reserved 

saucepan and melt it over 

low heat. Scrape the melted 

butter into a large bowl. 

Add the remaining 1 cup 

(220g) brown sugar and 

whisk vigorously until the 

mixture is smooth, thick, 

and satiny, about 30 seconds. 

Add the eggs one at a 

time, whisking thoroughly 

after each addition, then 

continue to whisk until 

the mixture is completely 

smooth and slightly pale, 

about 30 seconds. Whisk 

in the vanilla, then add the 

flour and kosher salt and 

whisk vigorously until the 

batter is very smooth and 

thick, about 30 seconds. 

Nutella rice krispie 

slice 

Makes 18 

Ingredients 

50g butter 

225g white marshmallows 

325g Nutella 

175g rice bubbles 

300g white chocolate 

Directions 

Line a 28 x 18cm slice 

tin with baking paper. 

Place the butter and 

marshmallows in a large 

saucepan and stir over 

a low heat until melted. 

Remove from the heat, add 

175g of the Nutella and stir 

until smooth. 

Add the rice bubbles and 

mix well. Use slightly wet 

hands to press the mixture 

firmly into the prepared 

slice tin. 

Melt the white chocolate 

in a bowl set over a pan of 

simmering water or in short 

bursts in a microwave, 

stirring between bursts. In 

a separate bowl, slightly 

melt the remaining 150g 

of Nutella. Pour the two 

mixtures over the base and 

swirl with a skewer or fork 

to get a marbled effect. 

Refrigerate until set 

before serving.
