before closing OxfordRoad, near
Rangiora, for roadworks this week,
says Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon.
Mr Gordonsays, given it is abusy
road,the council couldhave done
better.
Commutersand local business
owners have vented theirfrustrations
at the lack of notice.
Fernsidebusinessowners say they
were not consultedonhow the road
closure,whichcouldbefor up two
months, would impact on their
businesses.
They say the lack of advanced notice
left them havingtoquickly rethink
how to operate.
One business owner was understood
to be negotiating withthe councilto
temporarily relocate his business late
last week.
Commuterstook to social media last
week to vent their frustrations, after
road closure signsappeared.
FernsideFresh Milk owner Peter
Hansen said he only found out the day
before he closedfor Christmas.
‘‘There was no consultationabout
how this would impactour businesses.
‘‘This is certainly going to effectus.
We’veonly been going ashorttime, but
we’restarting to gain some
momentum.’’
A1km stretch of OxfordRoad at
Fernside, between Swannanoa and
last week,after enquirieswere made.
Mr Hansensays he had contacted
Cordetodiscuss how it would impact
his business.
‘‘Theguy from Cordesaid in
Christchurch they put signs up to say
youcan access businesses, but they
don’t do thatout here.’’
Fernside FreshMilk is still
operatingand Corde has said
customers can still access the Oxford
Road entrance, from the Boundary
Road end, Mr Hansen says.
Mr Gordon says the council’s
standard notification practice was
onsite signage, aletterbox dropto
affected properties and updateson
thecouncil’s websiteand Facebook
Buthesaid this could havebeen
done earlier,and he hasraised the
matter withactingchiefexecutive Jeff
‘‘Options such as temporary traffic
He was Canterbury District RSA
Iwas being consideredand they would
get back to me in December if Iwas
successful.
‘‘I was humbled but thought there
were othersmore deservingthan me.
Dark Sky Trust seeks sanctuary
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Kaikōura could soonbecomeadark
sky sanctuary.
The Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust has
been invited by the International
DarkSkyAssociation to applyfor
sanctuary status, which would give the
area higher status than Tekapo.
The trust, which was formed last
year,has been working withthe
Kaikōura District Counciltowards
making the districtadark sky reserve.
‘‘Sanctuary is like the gold star
status,’’ project coordinator Colette
Doughty says.
‘‘We initially looked at the criteria
andthoughtwewouldn’t quality for
sanctuary status. We thought we would
need to be like Stewart Island.’’
But the advisefrom the experts in
the UnitedStates was Kaikōura could
apply for sanctuary statusbecauseof
the remoteness of the district, she
says.
To becomeadark sky sanctuary an
area needs to be remote, have ahigh
dark sky reading and there needs to be
protections put in place.
The Kaikōuradistricthas adark sky
reading on apar with Tekapo,
according to Nasa’s website.
Mrs Doughty said 51 percent of the
district was Department of
Conservation land, which enhanced
its credentialsasaremotearea.
The trustisdue to meetonFriday,
January 27,todecidewhetherto
pursuesanctuary status.
It willthen step up its efforts to
protect the district’s night sky by
making aprivateplan change
application to the Kaikōura District
Plan.
‘‘It is not aboutmajorchange,but
about protecting what we have and
making sure new builds fitthe
criteria,’’ Mrs Doughty says.
Race and Gala day to return
By ROBYN BRISTOW
The historic race track on MedburyRoad
will again reverberate to the soundof
hooves on turf, on February 11.
The HurunuiRace and Gala Day is
returning.
Apartfromthe horse racing, there will
be fashioninthefield, trade and craft
stalls, food and refreshments, free
children's entertainment and the popular
Station ChallengeTugofWar.
The last race day was held in February
2020 aweekbefore the country was
plunged into lockdownwiththe increased
emergence of Covid19.
The race committeehas hostedthe biannual
event since 2010, but postponed the
planned event in 2022 giventhe
uncertainty thatremained withcovid in
the community.
But the horses willrun again, the crowd
will cheer them on, while there is ahost of
entertainment and trade and craft stalls, to
enjoy.
Fashioninthefield is open to men,
womenand children,and there is already
plenty of chatter aboutthe makeupof
teamscompeting for honours in the tugofwar.
Both events can be entered on the day.
Once againthe race committee has been
well supported with generous local
business’s sponsoringthe event.
CommitteechairAlly Youngman says
the generous supportoffaithful local
sponsors is huge given the economic
climate, with many businessesreturning
each time the race andgala day is held.
This yearthe committee has partnered
with the volunteer brigades of Waiau,
Culverden, Hawarden and Waikari to
provide much needed man poweronthe
day to ensureitis afun filledand safe
eventfor all.
Work is already going on behindthe
scenes to ensure the track and grounds are
in tip top condition.
Historydates back to 1874 when the
fromthenonuntilWWII intervened the
Catan World Champion ... Hamish Dean
PHOTO: JACKIE WATSON
Talker aworld champ
By SHELLEY TOPP
A‘‘good talker’’ from Amberley witha
PhD in mathematicsisthe new Catan
WorldChampion.
Hamish Dean began playing the
strategy board game withagroup of
friends 12 yearsago.
Then in 2013,when he was in Los
Angeles, where he spends part of every
year working on his software business
ShapeShifter, he startedtesting
himself at ahigher level,playing
competitively.
Aftersharpening his skill level with
competition in Los Angeles, Hamish
became the first New ZealandCatan
Champion in 2021, but was unable to
defend his titlein2022 as the
competition wascancelled because of
Covid19 pandemicrestrictions.
However, his 2021 national title
prize included atrip to Malta, in the
Mediterranean, for the CatanWorld
Championship on November18to20
last year,and his tickettocompete
thereagainst other national
champions from around the world.
The game of Catan was designed by
KlausTeuberofGermanyin1995 and
involves two or four players competing
to establish the most successful colony
on the fictional island of Catan.
‘‘A typical game takes one and ahalf
hoursbut at the World Games they
take three to three and ahalf hours,’’
Hamish says.
‘‘Unbelievably, sometook 45
minutesfor their first turn.’’
Therewere 87 competitors from48
countries at the Malta event, with
Hamish the onlyrepresentative from
New Zealand.
His planwas to win, and he was
confident he coulddothat, but he kept
his inner optimism hidden from his
opponentsinthe heats and made sure
he was not one of the favourites by just
sneakinginto the semifinals,
finishing in 16th placewhichproved to
be an advantage.
‘‘The16th player getslast choicein
theirstarting position. So the other15
players would consider their starting
position better than mine, and so at the
startofthe game,Iam the least
favoured,’’ Hamish says.
‘‘Because Ihad finished 16th in the
heats noone picked on me in the
semis.’’ That enabled him asmooth
ride flying undertheir radar to win his
semifinal.
‘‘I am agood talker and Iwas good at
convincing theother players to part
with theirresources,’’ he says.
His semifinal was the first to finish.
He then had to wait two and ahalf
hoursfor the other semifinalists to
finish, which was frustrating,but gave
him atactical advantage.
‘‘By the time of the final Iwas feeling
very confident and under no
pressure,’’hesays.
‘‘It is agame of negotiation, and I
was able to convince the others to pick
on each other.’’
His winner’s prizewas atrip to
defend his worldtitle in 2024with a
date and location stilltobedecided.
He also won arange of board games,
so many thathehad to pay extra
baggage fees to bring them home.
Stubble fire advice
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Stubble fires are triggering unwanted
call outs by fire brigades across
Canterbury.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand
(FENZ) is experiencing an increase in
calls to rural addresses where
landowners are burning crop stubble
after finishing harvest.
Amajority of the call outs are false,
and prompted by people seeing smoke or
afire and ringing 111.
FENZ Community Risk Manager Dean
Harker says the false callouts can be
reduced by landowners following afew
quick easy steps.
These include following Federated
Farmers recommended best practice
protocol of informing effected parties,
including neighbours, especially down
wind, and FENZ.
‘‘This will assist in areduction of false
alarm calls from the public,’’ Mr Harker
says.
FENZ has controlled burn banners
that landowners can borrow and display
in ahighly visible location to inform
members of the public that the fire/ burn
off are controlled.
Mr Harker says these can requested by
emailing
canterburycrr@fireandemergency.nz.
The public can also play their part by
making aquick phone call to (03) 341
0266 when they spot smoke or flames in
rural Canterbury.
Mr Harker says this often meant
Stubble fire ... Landowners are urged to
help stop unnecessary call outs for FENZ.
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
volunteers weren’t called away from
their places of work unnecessarily if it
was astubble fire.
He says while there is an Open Fire
Season at the moment, fires should not
be lit when the fire danger on the day
may be elevated, including hot windy
days.
‘‘Also ensure you have an adequate
water source nearby should afire get out
of control.’’
More information, including if you can
light afire, can be found at FENZ
website, checkitsalright.nz.
Garden business flourishing
By SHELLEY TOPP
AFernsidelifestyle property, bought
to give the new owners’ children space
to play, has evolved intoasuccessful
garden business.
Jo and JasonChapman’s Fernside
Flowers, at 296 O’RoarkesRoad, is a
country garden nursery which sells
locally grown, affordable cottage
garden annuals and perennials.
The couple also sellvegetable
seedlingsand next year Jo hopes she
will have fresh flowers from her
garden for customers.
The husband and wifebought the
propertythreeyears ago when Jo was
aphysical education teacher and
knew nothing aboutgardening.
Jason, who also works for Air New
Zealand,says Jo is the ‘‘brainsbehind
the business’’, while Jo says,Jason
does all the hard work at the property.
When they moved intotheirnew
home the garden had clearly been
developedbysomeone who knewwhat
they were doing. It was justinneed of
some loving care, Jo says.
She had acquired alove of parksand
gardens some years earlier when the
couple lived in London.
Then,when they returnedhome to
New Zealand to live in Nelson,Jo
begantoappreciate nature even more
through theeyes of their children.
It was also in Nelsonwhere she
learnt about the gardentoplate
programmeinschools, and how
children benefitfrom learning to grow
theirown fresh fruit and vegetables
and preparing them to eat.
When Jo and Jasonmoved to
Fernsidethey wanted to restoretheir
garden to its former glory and began by
clearing theweeds.
Peaceful spot ... Jo Chapman, the owner of Fernside Flowers in O’Roarkes Road, in her
appeared.
‘‘It reminded me of Regent's Park in
London,’’ Jo says.
‘‘We found so many hidden
treasures.’’
Amagnolia tree, now underplanted
with acarpet of rose campion, a
rhododendron garden, arose garden,
adaffodilwalkway, an orchard and
nowthere is alsoacricket oval,
surrounded by large pittosporums and
other native trees.
‘‘We loveplaying cricket,’’ Jo says.
Butwith the initial jungleofweeds
gone there were many gaps to fill.
Jo beganthat task with asingle
packet of alyssum seeds which
progressed to 10 flowervarieties.
She alsoread many gardening
books, talked to lots of people, learnt
as she went along, and soon became
interestedindeveloping the garden
into aplant nursery.
Now she is propagatingand growing
more than 100 varieties of perennials
and annuals and loving her new career
as agardener.
‘‘It is very pleasant.
‘‘We are very lucky with the support
we have had from locals,’’ she says.
Rangiora HS review
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Change is in the air at Rangiora High
School in 2023.
Bruce Kearney has had three terms to
get his feet under the table, after taking
over as principal in May last year, and is
ready to make his mark.
The entire school curriculum, and
how it is delivered, is set to come under
the microscope, including the role of the
Rakahuri building.
It follows the school announcing in
November its intention to conduct a
review of the school farm.
‘‘It is going to be abig year,’’ Mr
Kearney says.
‘‘It is about bringing teaching and
learning back to the forefront.
‘‘We will be evaluating what we are
doing and the impact on our students.’’
The review will cover crosscurricula
year 9and 10 programmes, the wānanga
teacher (or form teacher) structure, and
resilience and wellbeing courses.
It will be led by new deputy principals
Haidee Tiffen and Paula McDonald.
Aformer New Zealand women’s
cricket player and coach, Ms Tiffen
joined staff in the middle of last year,
while Ms McDonald was appointed at
the end of last year.
One of the questions they will be
considering is whether the Rakahuri
building’s open plan learning
environment is fit for purpose, Mr
Secondary changes
By JOHN COSGROVE
It’sthe bigyear, theone whenyour child
leaves primary school and starts their
secondary school education.
Rangiora NewLife School principal
Stephen Walters, says all high schools
havevery goodtransition programmesin
place.
‘‘They all starttheir programmes the
yearbefore,and their roleistohelp
supportstudents withthe bigchanges in
study andsocialenvironments they all
facewhencoming to anew school,’’ he
says.
Mr Walterssaysparents can alsoplay a
big part in helpingtheir children
transition successfully to anew school.
‘‘Weencourageparents to attend a
parent /teacher/studentbarbecue at the
start of each year to makeconnections.
‘‘For parents it’stolearn whotheir
children's teachers areand forthe
childrenit’s achancetolearn to make
connections.
‘‘It’simportant forparentstoencourage
their childrentotakepart in school
activities:either sporting,creative or
outdoors, to allow them to make
connections withother students.
‘‘Anumberofour new students come
without knowinganyone here. Their
friends from last year have gonetoother
high schools, andtohelpthem, we
encourage themtomake friends either
through sport or attendingextra
curricular schoolactivities.’’
Mr Walterssaysparents shouldalways
getacopy oftheir child’s timetable to
supportthemwiththe newclass structure
they arefacing thisyear
‘‘It helpsthem processall thenew
academic subjects they are undertaking
forthe first time.’’
He urges parents to ensure their
student’s device is fully chargedeachday.
Changes studentscan expect are: new
routines, newteachers,new support
peopleand anew school system;having a
form teacher,and adifferent teacherfor
each subject; getting used to atimetable,
with lessonsfor each subject in different
classrooms; findtheir waytoclassand
getting thereontimewith therighttext
books or gear; wearingauniform; a
longer, moreintensive schoolday;
learningunfamiliarsubjects andmuch
more homework.
The school day
Most secondary schools have alonger
school day thanprimary/intermediate
schools, with studentsoften starting at
8.40amand ending at 3.20pm.
Theday normally starts in aform,home
or whä nauclass with arollcalland daily
notices.
Students then break into subject
classes,moving to different classrooms
with differentteachers for each subject.
In larger schools, teachers teach only
their specialist subject(s) andteach
hundreds of students each week.
Lessons (called periods) can be 50
minutestoanhourlong, andinanaverage
daystudents will havefiveorsix periods.
Each school has adifferent timetable
system which must be learnt and
managed.
Schools change theirtimetables each
term andsomeschools have several
differenttimetablesthat mightrotate
weekly throughout the year.
Care urged as NC schools open
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Careand commonsenseare key
ingredientsinkeepingstudents safe as
theystart returning to schoolinlate
January.
Students and parents arebeing urgedto
exercise both as TermOne begins in
North Canterbury.
There willbealot of studentson
safety officerPeterDalysays students
havejust hadsix to eightweeksholiday
and will not be thinking much about what
theyare doing as theymaketheir way to
school.
‘‘Everyone just has to be careful as they
(students) can do random things.
‘‘Kids are not adultsand don’t always
takecareofthemselves like we would
wantthemto,’’ says Mr Daly.
Students neededtobe reminded about
being careful, responsible andsensible
en route to andfromschool, andkeep a
lookout forcars andtrucks.
Motorists alsoneeded to take care.
‘‘Slow down and allowplentyofspace
whenyou see children walking or cycling.
‘‘Kids can’t always judgethe speed and
distanceofapproaching cars –soslow
downand expect the unexpected,’’ says
Mr Daly.
School buseswill be backplying rural
routes, he says.
Thismeans driversmust slowdownto
20 kphtopassbusesregardlessofthe
direction,and which sideofthe road, they
are passingthe bus as it stops to pick up
or drop off passengers.
Parents andcaregivers are also urged
to be carefulwhen droppingoff or picking
up their students.
“If you do drive yourchildren to school,
think aboutparkingfurther awayfromthe
school gateand walk,’’ Mr Dalysays.
‘‘Double parking is abig concernduring
Things to remember:
Children can’t accurately judge the
speed and distanceofapproachingcars.
Young childrencan’talwayslocate the
source of sounds.
Children's eye levels arelowerthan
adults; they may notbeable to see around
Theyget easilydistracted around other
childrenand may forget to look fortraffic.
Mr Dalysays thecouncilhas starteda
programme lookingatspeed limits
District to ensureeveryone stays safe.
However, he says even if people are
travelling at thespeed limititdoesn’t
makeit100 percent safe forotherroad
uses.
In abid to ensure cyclists knowhow to
stay as safe as possible, thecouncil
contracts theNorth Canterbury Sport
‘‘The programme is providedatour
‘‘The speed limitfor passing abus that is
There willalso be students, somevery
‘‘Throughout all of our communities there
‘‘Please be mindful of these areas in your
Abig year ... Year 11 is the start of National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA)
Many to face NCEA
Thisyear manythousands of students
nationwide willface the biggest
academic examoftheirschool years to
date–National Certificate of Educational
Achievement(NCEA).
Students usually beginstudying for
their NCEA Level 1inYear11, and
continuestudyingthroughyears12and 13
(from ages 15 throughto18) for Level’s2
and 3.
Rangiora NewLife School principal
Stephen Walters says unlike in their
parents day,whenschool certificate
exams sawstudents studyingfor awhole
yearbefore sitting an exam, theNCEA
examinationinternal assessment process
starts almost immediately after theybegin
their year.
‘‘Once we start, theyear 11 students
needtobeawaretheir first assessments
are due in onlyafew weeks time, and this
is where their parents canplay abig part
in helpingtheir childrensucceed.’’
Mr Walterssaysparents should
encourage their childrentotalk to their
teachers, to learnthe critical assessment
dates, to learn theintricacies of the NCEA
schedule because it changessubtly each
year.
‘‘Talk to your children, find out their
timetable,discover with them the critical
pinch points they mustadheretofor
handing in assignments.
‘‘It’sabig yearfor year11students and
we encouragetheirparents to help them
keep to the schedule, tohelp them process
allthe newinformation on when
assignments aredue,when andhow to
studyand how to balancetheir school and
social lives.’’
Parents should encouragestudents to
talk to theirteachers,talk abouthow to
improve their assignmentsand not leave
it alltothe last minute.
‘‘Manyare undertaking practical
assignments that theyhavenever done
before,writingformal letters,making
craft or engineering things, completing
analysis andbackingtheirfindingsup
with research.
‘‘It’saverybusytime forall anditis
here where parents can alsoplayapartby
keeping an eyeonattendances.’’
Mr Walterssays thisyear it is very
important forparentstomonitor their
children's attendancerates.
‘‘Manyofthe internally assessed
subjects require aminimum of 90 percent
attendancebystudents.
‘‘If thereare issues through sicknessor
stress thenwehaveprocesses in placeto
help out, but we need to know before it
becomesaproblem,’’ he says. Parents
should encourage students to study,make
thecommitment to keep to theschedule,
andwhentheyare struggling, as many
will, he says ‘‘please talktous, we are here
to help.’’
We would like to wish everyone a
Comcol (formerly Community
But general manager Kate O’Connor
It suspended its Youth Guarantee
Comcol North Canterbury ran an
The new 12week coursewill starton
The Grow programme willteach
Skills included cooking, budgeting,
preparing aCV, barista training and
It will centre on growing food and
preparing it in the kitchen and there
will be flexibility to support student
It has been made possible thanksto
‘‘Withoutthose sheep from Marlborough
it wouldbeavery low yarding.’’
Mr Rowe says in recent yearsnumbers
have swelled from the sale of capitalstock
due to farmsales, suggesting there may be
less sheep around.
‘‘Hawarden has been avenue to unload
‘‘There has been atransition out of
The numbers might be down, but Mr
Farmersbattling sheep drench resistance
By TIM CRONSHAW,
@alliedpress.co.nz
A‘‘sobering’’ rise in sheep drench
resistance is leaving farmers with few
options to destroy internalparasites.
This was compoundedlast week with
the announcement thatBionicPlus
capsules to manage internal parasites in
ewes over lambing willlikely be pulled
from shelves by distributor Boehringer
Ingelheim. Farmers were relying on using
acombinationofdrenches to slow worm
resistance to them, but this is looking
tenuous.
Areport by national veterinary
laboratory Gribbles Veterinaryfound33
percent of farms tested had
Trichostrongylus worms that were
resistant to triple combinations of
chemicals.
It also revealed 18 percent of farmshad
Teladorsagia species thatwere resistant
to this mix of drugs. The commonlyused
Moxidectin—popular for controlof
Barber’sPole worm —was showing
resistance in bothofthesespecies —38
percent of farms for Trichostrongylus and
40 percent of farms for Teladorsagia.
WormwiseProgramme manager Dr
GinnyDodunski said she had been
hearing from farmers and vets of alarge
upswing in combination drench resistance
in recentyears.
Some veterinarypractices had reported
that 30 percent of theirtests were showing
triple combination resistance in one or
more worm species, she said.
Ms Dodunski said the Gribblesreport
confirmed these findings.
“In 2017, less than seven percent of the
testsrun showedtriple combination
resistance in any species and now 33
percent of cases are showing up triple
resistant Trichostrongylus’’, she said.
‘‘This reflects the growing number of
Cheerless outlook ... Wormwise
Programme manager Ginny Dodunski has
found areport paints ableak picture for
sheep drench resistance.
PHOTO:SUPPLIED
cases of autumnillthrift and even deaths
in lambmobs where large numbers of this
resistant wormhave been allowedto
build.’’
The largest set of drenchtestingdata
released in New Zealand so far shows the
results from64tests in the NorthIsland
and 102 testsinthe South Island.
Ms Dodunski saidusing drench
combinations to slowresistancewas
advocatedwhen there was alow level of
preexisting resistancetoindividual
actives in adrench,and where other
known measurestodelay resistance were
also in place.
“Unfortunately, most farmers did not
know theirresistance status whenthey
started usingcombos, and the other safety
measures such as not usinglongacting
treatments in ewes, and not wintering
lambs in excess of ewe replacements, have
notbeen well understood or adopted.
We’re now in asituation where substantial
changes to management practices are
required on somefarms because they have
so few drench options left.”
The Wormwise partnershipfunded by
Beef +Lamb New Zealand, veterinarians,
an animal health body and the Ministry for
Primary Industriesadvisessheep farmers
to ‘‘get testing yesterday’’.
Ms Dodunskisaid many farmers would
be carrying out routine weaning drenches
at the moment. ‘‘A great first step is to
collect 10 fresh faecal samples from lambs
10 days afteryou drenched them, andsend
them for afaecalegg count. If there are no
eggs present afterdrenching, that’s great
news, but if thereare, that’s the start of a
conversation with your animal health
adviser.”
Farmers who rely on Bionic Plus
anthelmintic capsulestotreat animals
infected withparasiticworms are being
told to start planningonfarmingwithout
the product after Boehringer Ingelheim
revealed it will probably not be available
for thisyear’s lambing. Problems emerged
last yearwith the Bionic Plus Hogget
capsule, leadingittoberecalled, and an
extendedmeat withholding period
applied to sheep already treatedwith the
capsule.
Investigations are continuing, but it
appears the capsuleswere not releasing
product at the correct rate.Boehringer
has advised vets thatitis‘‘highly unlikely’’
that eithercapsulewill be available in
2023.
Ms Dodunskisaid the unavailabilityof
Bionic Plus could be an opportunity for
farmers to look at a‘‘reset’’ of their
breedingflock management.“There are
plenty of farmers aroundNew Zealand
who get great ewe performance and
excellent lamb weaningweights without
the use of any prelamb worm treatment
for ewes—but thekey to this are ewe body
condition and feed planning. ‘‘Getting this
right for lambing starts the day you wean.”
Some farms with big responses to capsules
hadfeed at lambing and it was about amix
of lambing dates, stocking rates, autumn
andwinter sales policies,grazing
management and fertility.
Observatory overcomes challenges
By DAVID HILL
Local Democracy Reporter
The Oxford communityisready to
cashinon agrowing interest in
astronomy.
Oxford Area School Observatory
volunteer Raul EliasDrago says the
teamhas come throughCovid19
disruptions and is stronger than
ever.
After holding just one open night
in 2021, theobservatory lost some
key volunteers and fellow volunteer
ErikVermaatadmits the team came
close to throwing in the towel.
But last yearthe weatherplayed
balland the observatory had its best
stargazing season in 16 years of
operation.
‘‘Itwas our bestyear so far with
attendance and we evenhad to put
people on awaitinglist because of
the demand,’’ Mr EliasDrago says.
After two years of virtually no
income, the teamhas been able to
fundsome much needed
maintenance. Now theeightstrong
teamofvolunteers is planning for
the future.
Prior to Covid, previous
observatory volunteers discussed
options withthe Waimakariri
DistrictCouncil for protecting the
night sky from light pollution.
Acouncil spokesperson saysthe
councilisgradually converting
street lights to 3000KLED lighting,
in linerecommendations by the
International DarkSkyAssociation.
A‘‘Light Protection Area
Overlay’’ provisionhas been
included in the Proposed
Waimakariri District Plan,
includingrules for shielding and
timing of outdoor lighting near the
Oxford Observatory.
Conversations were also ongoing
extendits education programme,
with the possibility of astrotourism
in the longer term.
Mr EliasDrago says open
evenings have been pencilled in
across16weekends betweenApril
and August this year.
Two early morning sessions are
also planned in July to view
Matariki.
Asolar filter has been purchased,
so solarobservation sessionscan be
offered during the day.
Astrophotographysessions are
also being planned and the
volunteersare keen to buy asecond
telescope to increasecapacity.
Alongside the open nights are the
astronomy coursesoffered by Mr
Vermaat.
Covid disruptions forced the
classes to go online two years ago
and this has provedtobeasuccess,
he says.
‘‘I havepeoplefrom Auckland
and around the SouthIslandtaking
the courses and hopefully we will
get peoplefrom overseas,’’ Mr
Vermaat says.
The courses begin with
‘‘exploring the solarsystem’’ in
term one, kickingoff on February
14. Asecond course,‘‘exploring the
universe’’will continue over terms
two, three and four.
He says the coursesare open to
all ages,from youngchildren to
retiredfolk.
‘‘I talk alot about the underlying
physics. Once we leavethe solar
system, you really need the physics
like ‘whatisspectroscopy?’.
‘‘I bring physics backtothe very
basics and in normal English. Italk
aboutthe historyofscienceand
how we as humansinitially
discoveredthings, where we are
now and what we can expectover
the next few years.’’
The observatory is also helping
the school to reconnect with
international student exchanges,
Teething problems at
new Amberley Pool
By DAVID HILL
Local Democracy Reporter
The Amberley MainpowerPool
has been experiencing some
unexpected teething problems
in its firstfullseasonof
operation.
Atechnicalfault on
Christmas Eve and ahigh
demand for season passeshas
caused some headachesfor
council staff,Hurunui District
Council pool manager Naomi
Woodham says.
The new pool openedfor just
one month last season, but is
expectedtooperatefor afull six
monthseasonuntilApril.
Amalfunction in theplant
room on ChristmasEve saw the
closure of the pool overthe
Christmas /New Year period,
whilethe council waited to
source replacement parts.
‘‘We had techniciansout as
soon as we could,’’MsWoodham
says.
‘‘We weregoing to be closed
anyway, so we didn’t lost time to
the general public,only to our
members (seasonpass
holders).’’
Residents have taken to
social mediatovent their
frustrations at notbeingable to
access the poolinthe early
morning or evening.
But Ms Woodham says the
council had the weighupthe
extracostofemploying
lifeguards from 6am to 9am and
6pm to 8pm.
‘‘We feltitwasn’t worth
putting on lifeguards just for
two or three hours, so we looked
at different models.
‘‘The pool doesn’t make
money, it is subsidised by the
ratepayer.’’
Theyoptedfor amodel based
on Lyttelton Pool,offering
season passes for $125 (plusa
$10 bond) to regularusers to use
the pool between 6amand 9am
and 6pm to 8pm.
‘‘We thoughtwemightget 20
to 30 people, but it went crazy
with the numbers,’’ she says.
‘‘It is full in themorning, so
we had to put acap on it.’’
Season passes for the fivelane
pool havebeen capped at
under 100 for lane swimming
and aqua jogging.
The seasonpass holders are
required to go through ahealth
and safety briefingand are
given lessons on how to take the
cover off the pool and placeit
backon.
And there mustbeatleast two
people at the pool at all times.
Ms Woodhamsays there have
alsobeen complaints aboutthe
chlorine levels and water
temperatures.
‘‘We’ve had some complaints
fromparents about the chlorine
being too strong in the toddlers’
pool. We testitevery hour and
we’ve been keeping the
chlorine levellow, so it’s never
beenunsafe.’’
She says it is hard to finda
balance, as some peopleprefer
higher temperatures, but others
say it is too hot.
Oxford Road Closed for Repairs
Oxford Road will beclosed from Monday
to repair failed areas inthe existing pavement.
Fix adripping tap.
Adripping tap can waste
15 litres of wateraday.
YOUTH
Development Grant
The site to be repaired is just over 1km long and
work should take approximately 6–8 weeks. If the
work is completed earlier, then the road will be
reopened. Traffic will be detoured via Swannanoa
Road and Boundary Road with large trucks
detouring via Tram Road.
Available to young people living
in the Waimakariri District aged
between 12 and 24.
The road closure allows the contractor to carry
out the works safely and more efficiently and
reduces the impacts onthe public. Other options
such as temporary traffic signals or Stop/Go
traffic management have been considered but
would cause longer travel delay times for drivers.
This is why the road closure and detour are being
put inplace.
We understand that this work will bedisruptive,
but it's important the repairs are undertaken.
Bin Checks Starting Up
KAIAPOI CHRISTADELPHIANS
“TheKey of Knowledge ..”
(Luke 11:52)
“KINGDOM OFGOD”
ONLY GOD CAN AND WILL
BRING WORLD PEACE
As nations constantly wage war, and chaos reigns
as people are in turmoil, trying to resolve conflict but
often making things more complicated. In this age it
would appear that most men would prefer to do that
which is right in their own eyes.
There is only one place where wisdom is presented,
giving answers to man’s questions. The Bible firstly
describes the conditions in these days (the last days)
as the same as the days when Noah and Lot lived.
The people had become immune to the deteriorating
moral conditions around them. Their condition could
be remediated if they turned to God. This is the same
for today. God has given the gospel through his son,
and the message is -‘Seek you first the kingdom of
God, and his righteousness’.
God has revealed his plan for his creation, and we
are at the final stage where he will intervene in man’s
affairs and bring about true peace, where men and
women will live peacefully, giving glory toGod, with
Jesus Christ ruling and guiding the world. This is true
hope, with the vision of aworld dwelling in harmony.
