day telling the epic tale of
Sunderland AFC’s history from
the first trophy win to the

and scorers including Watson,

It will celebrate one of the

history 50 years ago, that
glorious 1973 FA Cup win but
continues to tell the story of
the club right up until the epic
celebrations of the 2022 League
One play-offs.
Nicky Allt, writer of The
Sunderland Story said:
“Sunderland was one of the
clubs we specifically wanted
to write about. I met with a
number of Sunderland fans
over the years. Their fanaticism
and passion always moved me.
“I always felt their lives were
wrapped up in the football
club. To tell it from a people’s
perspective is how we are
doing this rather than in
football moments. We wanted
to tell it through the eyes of
the people who have grown
and lived with the football club
through the generations.
“We had Celtic and Liverpool
and we waited for our moment
with Sunderland. After the
play-offs, all we could see was
an upward trajectory with the
club. With the 50th anniversary
of the FA Cup final, it was the
right moment and we only see
the football club moving up
as well.

Benno has close connections
with Middlesbrough too as he
used to coach the youngsters
at the club and his son Andre
signed for Tony Mowbray,
and so it is that when we
arrive at the Riverside there
is inevitably much meeting
and greeting for the MBE.
I do recall one match at the
Riverside when I was covering
Newcastle United. ‘The Sun’, I
believe it was, tried to steal the
show by employing topless girls
to run on the pitch to distract
Paul Gascoigne. One of the
more bizarre incidents I have
ever witnessed at a football
match. I thought as I was
writing this that maybe it was
all a figment of my imagination,
but I have checked its veracity
and indeed it is true. It was in
December 1998 when the two
girls ran on in Christmas outfits
minus their upper garments
and chased Gazza around the
pitch! I’ve seen a chicken on
a pitch at Huddersfield and
a dog at Gillingham, but I
suspect that the Boro incident
tops both of those!

that also felt like the right time
to do the show. The history
of the football club will be
intertwined with the city. It’s
not just a football history, it’s a
city history. The mines, the ship
building, it’s all there.
“If I am being straight about
it, I feel really privileged
to write about Sunderland
Football Club. Every time I’ve
come across Sunderland fans,
they come across to me as
passionate a fanbase as any. I’m
very happy to be writing this

Even now Brian Clough
continues to fascinate people.
You never seem to go long
without yet another book
about Cloughie appearing, the
most recent being ‘Alchemy’,
published late last year and
exploring Clough’s time in
his first senior managerial
role at Hartlepool. Known
by many for his triumphs as
a manager, Sunderland and
Middlesbrough fans saw Brian
as a player.
Thinking of all those ‘Get
Clough for Roker’ car stickers
that were once de rigueur on
Wearside, sadly Brian never
came back to Sunderland to
spread the sort of managerial
stardust that saw him win the
top-flight title with both Derby
and Forest and sensationally
not only win the European Cup
with Forest but retain it. As I’ve
mentioned before in interviews
with them in the old Legion of
Light magazine, I interviewed
two Sunderland chairmen –
Keith Collings and Sir Tom
Cowie – who interviewed
Clough for the Sunderland
manager’s job and decided not
to give him it! They had their

reasons, mainly concerning
Clough’s relationship with
the boards of directors he
had worked with but finding
a Sunderland supporter who
doesn’t regret those decisions
is probably even harder than
finding a stone on Bamburgh
beach. If only!
As a striker Clough was as good
as he was as a manager - and
that is saying something!
In Brian’s last season for
Sunderland he had 28 goals
in 28 games before, he was
struck down by the injury that
effectively ended his career
on Boxing Day in 1962. Clough
tried incredibly hard to come
back from injury, eventually
playing three more games and
scoring one more goal after
three years of rehabilitation.
Clough scored even more
goals for his home town of
Middlesbrough. 197 in 213
league games added to his
Wearside tally of 54 league
goals in 61 outings gave him
an overall goals to games ratio
of 0.916 in league goals. No
player to have scored a double
century of goals in the history
of the game in England can
match that record.
Having been forced to give up
playing Clough the manager’s
first steps in that field were
taken at Sunderland. As
youth team manager he took
the club’s youngsters to the
semi-final of the FA Youth
Cup for the first time in 1965
before accepting the post of
Hartlepool manager in October
of that year.
There are statues to Clough
in Middlesbrough, Derby and
Nottingham. Had Sunderland
appointed him as first team
manager when they had the
chance there may well have
been a statue of Brian here too.

MANY HAPPY RETURNS
ALAN, FAMILY & FRIENDS
Red&White / 5
Good morning and welcome back to the Stadium
of Light for today’s game against Middlesbrough.
I’d like to start by welcoming Michael
Carrick and the visiting supporters
to Wearside – I spent 12 years of my
playing career there, as well as three
years in management and met some
fantastic people along the way.
Looking back at last week’s fixture against
Swansea City, it was great to see over
40,000 Sunderland supporters at the
Stadium of Light for the first time in 2023.
It was frustrating as I thought we started
the game very bright and looked the
better team when it was 11 v 11 – it felt like
it was going to be a good day for us.
After the red card, it turned into a long
afternoon against the team with the
best possession stats in the league.
Sometimes teams are more direct
and you can deal with them a man
down, but Swansea moved us around
and found a way through.
I said to the players after the game
that we weren’t going to over
analyse it – they worked extremely
hard, and we’ll have better days.
Middlesbrough have been in fantastic
form recently with four wins in a row in the
league, so we’re expecting a tough game.
We’re well prepared and we know
that we can be a match for anyone in
this division – it’s a big test, but one
that we’re looking forward to.
The reverse fixture at the Riverside was
difficult for us after losing Ross Stewart
in the warm-up and having to change
formation minutes before kick-off.
We have a number of injuries now
and once we get those players back,
I’m confident we can really push on
in the second half of the season.
Now it’s us on home soil we can start
on the front foot with the backing of a
huge crowd at the Stadium of Light.
We have to be aggressive in our play and I’m
confident we can take the three points.
Enjoy the game,

CORRY
EVANS
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to
the Stadium of Light, as we prepare to take on
Middlesbrough in a hugely important clash between
two sides who know each other very well.
We’re looking for a response from last
weekend’s defeat against Swansea City. It’s
a game we have looked to take the positives
from and on the whole, put behind us.
It’s a bit of a one-off when you go down to
10 men; I thought that with 11, we were well
on top, but these things happen in football.
The week has given us a bit of extra time to
get some more rest in the legs and secure
some more preparation under our belts for
what is going to be a huge game today.
Middlesbrough are a fantastic team.
They have really hit a good run and the
table speaks for itself. But we feel on
our day, that we’re confident against
any opponent, especially backed by the
support of all of you at the Stadium of
Light. We had over 40,000 last weekend
against Swansea, and to keep that noise
and those numbers would be huge for us.
On a personal note, I feel fine now in terms
of fitness. I suffered a tight hamstring
after the Blackburn Rovers game on
Boxing Day, so it was the right decision
to rest up for a few games. I trained away
for a few days and I feel good to go.
The important thing is now that we are
ready. We’re over halfway through the
season and the table will soon take shape
even further. We want to see how far we
can get and all push in the right direction.
Results like last week happen in
football, especially in a league like the
Championship. We can’t let it affect us,
and we have to keep our heads held
high. We’re a good team and we’re up
for Middlesbrough – we’re ready.
Enjoy the game,
Corry.

AWARD
We are delighted to reveal that Amad has
won the Vertu Motors PFA Fans’ Player of the
Month Award in the Sky Bet Championship for
December 2022.
The forward hit three goals in a Sunderland shirt
throughout the course of the month, securing
wins against Millwall and Wigan Athletic, as well as
a penalty struck against West Bromwich Albion.
The 20-year-old Manchester United loanee
has struck a real chord with teammates and
supporters alike, having now appeared 20 times
in the Championship, with six goals and one assist
from 13 league starts.
Among the nominees was a fellow man in red
and white, Ross Stewart, who hit three goals
in three games after returning from injury.
Middlesbrough’s Chuba Akpom, Viktor Gyokeres
of Coventry City, and Iliman Ndiaye and James
McAtee (both Sheffield United) were also
shortlisted.
Congratulations, Amad!

2022 NE
PRIZE
Sunderland AFC goalkeeper Anthony Patterson
has been named the North East Football
Writers’ Association’s Young Player of the Year
for 2022.
The 22-year-old enjoyed a stunning
breakthrough year on Wearside, returning
from a non-league loan spell at Notts County in
January before cementing his place as the Club’s
number one.
Patterson went on to keep nine clean sheets
during SAFC’s 17-game unbeaten run, which
culminated in victory and promotion at Wembley
Stadium in the Sky Bet League One Play-Off Final.
The second successive Academy of Light
graduate to earn the NEFWA Young Player of the
Year award, the goalkeeper succeeds 2021 winner
Dan Neil.
Patterson also follows in the footsteps of former
SAFC goalkeeper and current Everton and
England number one Jordan Pickford, who won
the award back-to-back in 2016 and 2017.
Patterson said: “I’m delighted to receive such a
special award. I’ve loved every minute. I know
how special the award is, and to follow in the
footsteps of of Jordan Pickford is something I’m
very proud of.
Tony Mowbray added: “Congratulations
to Anthony, it’s a great story. He is a very
unassuming kid and he keeps himself to himself.
What is fantastic is he keeps the ball out of the
net using his big frame to his advantage.”
Patterson will be presented with the coveted
award at the NEFWA’s annual awards evening,
which will take place on Sunday 5 March at the
Ramside Hall Hotel.

THE
SUNDERLAND
STORY
With tickets still on sale for the club’s theatre production
The Sunderland Story, those behind the concept have been
speaking of their pride in being the architects to the show.
The Sunderland Story, which
runs from Wednesday 17
May – Saturday 27 May, will
take audiences on a trip down
memory lane up to the modern
day telling the epic tale of
Sunderland AFC’s history from
the first trophy win to the
team’s legendary managers
and scorers including Watson,
Stokoe, Reid, Cochrane,
Campbell and Gurney.
It will celebrate one of the
biggest moments in SAFC’s
history 50 years ago, that
glorious 1973 FA Cup win but
continues to tell the story of
the club right up until the epic
celebrations of the 2022 League
One play-offs.
Nicky Allt, writer of The
Sunderland Story said:
“Sunderland was one of the
clubs we specifically wanted
to write about. I met with a
number of Sunderland fans
over the years. Their fanaticism
and passion always moved me.
“I always felt their lives were
wrapped up in the football
club. To tell it from a people’s
perspective is how we are
doing this rather than in
football moments. We wanted
to tell it through the eyes of
the people who have grown
and lived with the football club
through the generations.
“We had Celtic and Liverpool
and we waited for our moment
with Sunderland. After the
play-offs, all we could see was
an upward trajectory with the
club. With the 50th anniversary
of the FA Cup final, it was the
right moment and we only see
the football club moving up
as well.
“Within the city, there are a lot
of new buildings going up so
that also felt like the right time
to do the show. The history
of the football club will be
intertwined with the city. It’s
not just a football history, it’s a
city history. The mines, the ship
building, it’s all there.
“If I am being straight about
it, I feel really privileged
to write about Sunderland
Football Club. Every time I’ve
come across Sunderland fans,
they come across to me as
passionate a fanbase as any. I’m
very happy to be writing this
show.”
Tickets are priced from £13 and
are on sale. They are available
online at ATG Tickets.
*A £3.65 transaction fee applies to
telephone and online bookings.

JIM
MORROW
[2 JUNE 1929 – 5 JANUARY 2023]
Club historian Rob Mason pays tribute.
We were saddened to learn
of the death of former Youth
Development Officer Jim
Morrow at the age of 93. Jim
managed England Schoolboys
from 1970 to 1982 and came to
SAFC in 1985. In addition to his
outstanding work with young
players he became part of the
coaching staff under Denis
Smith and Malcolm Crosby,
being part of the backroom
staff when the FA Cup final was
reached in 1992.
As a young man Jim became a
teacher, starting at Washington
in 1948 and played football
in the Northern League for
Stanley United in addition to
representing his birthplace
of Pity Me at cricket. He also
played football for Ballymena
during his National Service with
the Royal Ulster Rifles.
Achieving his full FA Coaching
Badge as far back as 1953, after
progressing through local
and county junior football Jim
became assistant manager to
future Liverpool coach Tom
Saunders for the England
Schools team. Jim’s career
in education progressed as
he became head of Gilesgate
Moor Junior School in Durham.
One of many players to owe
Jim a debt of gratitude is Martin
Smith who came through the
ranks at Sunderland while
Jim was Youth Development
Officer. “I’m really sorry to
hear Jim has passed away” says
Martin. “I hadn’t seen him for
six or seven years and was just
thinking about him recently.
He was a big influence when
I was coming through to the
extent that my teammates
thought I was his ‘blue-eyed
boy’ as he always looked after
me. There was one game at
Bradford when I was playing
in the national trials after I’d
already signed schoolboy
forms for Sunderland. After a
couple of minutes I hit a scissor
kick from outside the box
and it cannoned off the bar.
Afterwards he was so happy
because all the scouts were
interested and he was saying to
them, ‘He’s mine!’”
Peter Stronach and Wilf Rostron
were future Sunderland players
who played for England boys
under Morrow, as did many
players who went on to have
great careers such as Ray
Wilkins, Kenny Sansom and
Clive Allen. Stronach says,
“Jim was great and I’m so
sorry to hear he has passed
away. When we were playing
at Wembley or at Arsenal Wilf
and I would travel down with
Jim along with John Trewick,
a Newcastle lad who went on
to play for West Bromwich
Albion and Newcastle amongst
others. He never showed
us any favouritism as he was
scrupulously fair and a pleasure
to play for.”
England Schoolboys won
62, drew 16 and lost 19 of Jim
Morrow’s 97 games in charge.
His contribution to football
with England and Sunderland
should not be underestimated.
“He was a passionate supporter
of 'The Red and Whites' right
until the end of his life” says his
daughter Julie. Rest in Peace
Jim.

TALES...
Rob Mason remembers the games
in honour of Sunderland players.
THE PLAYER
BRIAN
CLOUGH
At Sunderland:
14 July 1961 to 14 November
1964*
Appearances: 74
Goals: 63
Other club(s): Great Broughton,
South Bank, Billingham
Synthonia, Middlesbrough
International: England
*As a player, before continuing as youth
team coach until 27/10/1965.
Even now Brian Clough
continues to fascinate people.
You never seem to go long
without yet another book
about Cloughie appearing, the
most recent being ‘Alchemy’,
published late last year and
exploring Clough’s time in
his first senior managerial
role at Hartlepool. Known
by many for his triumphs as
a manager, Sunderland and
Middlesbrough fans saw Brian
as a player.
Thinking of all those ‘Get
Clough for Roker’ car stickers
that were once de rigueur on
Wearside, sadly Brian never
came back to Sunderland to
spread the sort of managerial
stardust that saw him win the
top-flight title with both Derby
and Forest and sensationally
not only win the European Cup
with Forest but retain it. As I’ve
mentioned before in interviews
with them in the old Legion of
Light magazine, I interviewed
two Sunderland chairmen –
Keith Collings and Sir Tom
Cowie – who interviewed
Clough for the Sunderland
manager’s job and decided not
to give him it! They had their
reasons, mainly concerning
Clough’s relationship with
the boards of directors he
had worked with but finding
a Sunderland supporter who
doesn’t regret those decisions
is probably even harder than
finding a stone on Bamburgh
beach. If only!
As a striker Clough was as good
as he was as a manager - and
that is saying something!
In Brian’s last season for
Sunderland he had 28 goals
in 28 games before, he was
struck down by the injury that
effectively ended his career
on Boxing Day in 1962. Clough
tried incredibly hard to come
back from injury, eventually
playing three more games and
scoring one more goal after
three years of rehabilitation.
Red&White / 23
Clough scored even more
goals for his home town of
Middlesbrough. 197 in 213
league games added to his
Wearside tally of 54 league
goals in 61 outings gave him
an overall goals to games ratio
of 0.916 in league goals. No
player to have scored a double
century of goals in the history
of the game in England can
match that record.
Having been forced to give up
playing Clough the manager’s
first steps in that field were
taken at Sunderland. As
youth team manager he took
the club’s youngsters to the
semi-final of the FA Youth
Cup for the first time in 1965
before accepting the post of
Hartlepool manager in October
of that year.
There are statues to Clough
in Middlesbrough, Derby and
Nottingham. Had Sunderland
appointed him as first team
manager when they had the
chance there may well have
been a statue of Brian here too.

NEWCASTLE UNITED ** 6
Eastham, Burton, Hateley, Dobson (p), Iley, St. John
Late in the evening of his
Testimonial Clough revealed
that he had accepted the
managerial hot seat at
Hartlepool. One of his new
Pools players had just played
alongside his new boss. Former
Sunderland man Amby Fogarty
had turned up as a spectator
but ended up playing for the
Lads due to Mike Hellawell’s
late withdrawal. Cloughie’s
abrasive nature meant that not
all of his regular Sunderland
team mates turned out for him,
something well documented in
Len Ashurst’s autobiography for
instance.
Billed as ‘Newcastle United’
the opposition was actually the
Magpies goalkeeper Gordon
Marshall and their defence. This
included Frank Clark who would
go on to win the European Cup
under Clough at Forest in 1979
and be assistant manager to
Ken Knighton as Sunderland
won promotion a year later.
None of Newcastle’s forwards
played in the testimonial game
as the front five were all ‘Guest
players’ with all but one of them
scoring. These were Arsenal’s
George Eastham (a former
Newcastle player), Aston
Villa’s Tony Hateley, Sheffield
Wednesday’s Colin Dobson
and Liverpool’s Ian St. John.
Arsenal man George Armstrong
competed the ‘Guests’ in
front of a record testimonial
attendance of 31,898.

CLUB HISTORIAN
ROB MASON
BROTHERS
Fifty years ago next week John
Hughes’ (below) only game
for Sunderland remains the
last time two brothers played
alongside each other for The
Lads. ‘Yogi’ played in the same
team as brother Billy (right) in a
2-0 home win over Millwall on
27 January 1973 only for injury
to deny Celtic legend John the
chance to play again.
In October 1989 the Gabbiadini
brothers both played for
Sunderland in a match at
Leeds, but with Ricardo coming
on as substitute to replace
Marco the brothers didn’t get
to play alongside each other
for Sunderland. As with John
Hughes, Ricardo’s appearance
here proved to be his only first
team match for SAFC.
1,000 UP
New Year’s Day’s game at
Blackpool was the 1,000th
league game in a row that
Sunderland have fielded at
least one full international.
Including used substitutes
Sunderland have used
between three and six full
internationals in every game so
far this season.
The last time a full international
did not play in a league game
for Sunderland was late in the
last century at Swindon on 3
May 1998, although of that
side Kevin Phillips and Allan
Johnston would win their first
caps for England and Scotland
the following season. Republic
of Ireland international Niall
Quinn missed that game at
Swindon as did Michael Gray
who would debut for England
the following season.
As regards all competitions,
the last SAFC line up to not
include a full international
happened much more recently.
The team for the Football
League Trophy game against
Manchester United Under 21s
in October 2021 was made up
of a side so bereft of first team
experience that seven players
made their debuts with only
Denver Hume – making his
way back from injury - having
more than the tiniest number
of first team appearances to his
name. Ironically there was a full
international former Sunderland
player in the Under 21 line-up of
the visitors – veteran Republic
of Ireland international Paul
McShane who was playing for
United as an over-age player.

first contract for the
Red Devils in 2011. He
went on to make 24
appearances during his
time at Old Trafford.
The defender signed
for Sunderland in 2016
making 28 appearances
over two seasons at

2021. The Northern
Ireland international
played an integral part in
helping the team qualify
for the 2016 European
Championships.
DARRAGH LENIHAN
Darragh previously
played under Tony
Mowbray at Blackburn
Rovers. After a
successful loan spell at
Burton Albion, Lenihan
made his Rovers debut
in 2015 against Millwall
at Ewood Park. Darragh
remained with the club
after relegation, playing
a vital role in their
2016/2017 promotion
season. The Republic of
Ireland international was

move to Accrington
Stanley in 2015 after a
successful loan spell. He
went on to play 53 times,
scoring eight goals for
the club. The 28-yearold
moved to Rangers
in 2016 but returned
to England a year later.
He joined Rotherham
United in 2019 and

role in helping The
Millers gain promotion
in 2020. Middlesbrough
signed Matt in 2021,
finishing as the club's
top goal scorer in his
debut season. Crooks
has scored six goals so
far this season.
JONNY HOWSON
A product of Leeds
United’s academy,
Howson made his
professional debut
against Barnet, at
just 16 years of age.
He scored 28 times
in 225 appearances
for the Elland Road
club before signing
for then-Premiership

January 2012. He would
go on to be appointed
club captain of the
Canaries, making a total
of 188 appearances
over a five-and-ahalf-year
stay at the
club. The experienced
midfielder signed
for Middlesbrough
in 2017 and was later
voted North East
Sports Writers Player
of the Year in 2021.
The 34-year-old has
amassed over 600
league appearances
to date, with 258 of
those coming in a
Middlesbrough shirt.
DUNCAN WATMORE
Watmore’s early years
were predominately
played in the lower
leagues. The Black Cats
swooped to sign him in
2013 after an impressive
15 goals in 28 matches
for Altrincham. A series
of injuries hampered his
progress at the Stadium
of Light. The 2019/2020
season would be his last,
scoring a total of eight
goals in 87 first-team
appearances. The striker
signed a two-anda-half-year
contract
with Middlesbrough
after impressing Neil
Warnock while training
with the club. He has
so far contributed five
goals in 21 appearances
this season.
CHUBA AKPOM
Akpom joined Arsenal’s
academy at the age of
six. The striker's first
senior goal came in a
Premier League match

Rob Mason researches what today’s opponents had to say
about The Lads when it was Sunderland’s turn to be the visitors.
As we look forward to the
fourth round of the FA Cup
in this 50th anniversary
season of the legendary 1973
FA Cup triumph, it is worth
remembering that the cup
winning season kicked off at
Middlesbrough.
The Teessiders’ programme
on 12 August 1972 stated
that Sunderland, “…must be
rated amongst the hottest
promotion favourites”. It fairly
made the point that, unlike
most promotion aspirants,
Sunderland’s bright young side
has been developed almost
entirely from the club’s nursery.
Only three of today’s possible
team have previously played
for other clubs…” Indeed of
the 17 man squad photograph
used only Dave Watson, Dick
Malone and Ian Porterfield had
not come through the youth
team, albeit by the time of the
cup final the XI who played at
Wembley would include new
signings Ron Guthrie and Vic
Halom. Incidentally the cup
final would be refereed by Ken
Burns of Stourbridge who also
blew the opening whistle of the
season at Ayresome Park.
When Sunderland next visited
Teesside as cup holders on
Boxing Day 1973 the Daily
Mirror’s Charlie Summerbell
revealed that ‘Up the Borough’
had become Sunderland’s
dressing room battle-cry.
Summerbell explained that this
had been his regular welcome
whenever he visited the
Sunderland squad and that since
then ahead of all Sunderland’s
European games he had always
sent a telegram simply saying,
‘Up the Borough!’
Sunderland’s visit to Ayresome
Park for a Littlewoods (League)
Cup tie in August 1987 bought a
column from the Boro captain,
none other than Tony Mowbray,
“Tonight’s game against the old
Red&White / 33
enemy will no doubt produce
all the good things that football
has to offer, big crowds, electric
atmosphere, two sides with
a lot of pride at stake. This
mixture should produce a fast
and entertaining game. The first
leg of the Littlewoods Cup at
Sunderland proved to be a very
close game. We now know what
we have to do to progress to the
next round. It will be very close
but I am sure we will go through,
so enjoy the game, keep out of
trouble and cheer the lads into
the next round.”
‘Mogga’ was the centre
spread in the programme for
Sunderland’s visit in September
1991, complete with a fetching
blond hair-do. The poster
followed a profile of the then
27 year old Boro skipper which
pointed out that as well as
Tony winning back to back
promotions with his local club
in 1987 and 1988 he had at one
point made 111 consecutive
league appearances between
January 1985 and September
1988.
Sunderland’s last ever trip to
Ayresome Park in September
1994 saw Adrian Bevington
interview from Boro, Sunderland
and Newcastle man Alan
Foggon. ‘What happened at
Roker Park?’ he was asked. “It
was fine at first” replied Foggon
who continued, “but when
Bob Stokoe was sacked and
Jimmy Adamson took over the
problems began. Adamson
didn’t want any of the senior
pros so individually he called in
myself, Jim Montgomery and
others, and bombed us out.
I only played once more and
Sunderland were relegated.”
Later in the same issue the
welcome to Sunderland started
with, “A visit from Sunderland
is always a special occasion”
before going on to outline the
history of the club, stating, “The
Rokermen were one of the first
giants of the game by the turn
of the century and had finished
in the league’s top two 11 times
by the outbreak of World War
Two – higher than Boro have
ever achieved.”
More recently Sunderland’s visit
to Teesside in April 2017 was
a Premier League encounter.
Ugo Ehiogu was pictured on
the cover as part of a tribute
to a highly respected player
who had just passed away.
The same issue included a
column from former Premier
League referee Jeff Winter
who remembered that he
officiated at Sunderland games
over 30 times. At the time of

far from friendly encounter, due
to the antics of the Romanians.
I remember inviting Steve
Agnew to have a ‘free one’ on
their most annoying midfielder,
he duly obliged before quickly
being substituted.” Winter went
on to recall refereeing the first

Rob Mason researches what today’s opponents had to say
about The Lads when it was Sunderland’s turn to be the visitors.
As we look forward to the
fourth round of the FA Cup
in this 50th anniversary
season of the legendary 1973
FA Cup triumph, it is worth
remembering that the cup
winning season kicked off at
Middlesbrough.
The Teessiders’ programme
on 12 August 1972 stated
that Sunderland, “…must be
rated amongst the hottest
promotion favourites”. It fairly
made the point that, unlike
most promotion aspirants,
Sunderland’s bright young side
has been developed almost
entirely from the club’s nursery.
Only three of today’s possible
team have previously played
for other clubs…” Indeed of
the 17 man squad photograph
used only Dave Watson, Dick
Malone and Ian Porterfield had
not come through the youth
team, albeit by the time of the
cup final the XI who played at
Wembley would include new
signings Ron Guthrie and Vic
Halom. Incidentally the cup
final would be refereed by Ken
Burns of Stourbridge who also
blew the opening whistle of the
season at Ayresome Park.
When Sunderland next visited
Teesside as cup holders on
Boxing Day 1973 the Daily
Mirror’s Charlie Summerbell
revealed that ‘Up the Borough’
had become Sunderland’s
dressing room battle-cry.
Summerbell explained that this
had been his regular welcome
whenever he visited the
Sunderland squad and that since
then ahead of all Sunderland’s
European games he had always
sent a telegram simply saying,
‘Up the Borough!’
Sunderland’s visit to Ayresome
Park for a Littlewoods (League)
Cup tie in August 1987 bought a
column from the Boro captain,
none other than Tony Mowbray,
“Tonight’s game against the old
Red&White / 33
enemy will no doubt produce
all the good things that football
has to offer, big crowds, electric
atmosphere, two sides with
a lot of pride at stake. This
mixture should produce a fast
and entertaining game. The first
leg of the Littlewoods Cup at
Sunderland proved to be a very
close game. We now know what
we have to do to progress to the
next round. It will be very close
but I am sure we will go through,
so enjoy the game, keep out of
trouble and cheer the lads into
the next round.”
‘Mogga’ was the centre
spread in the programme for
Sunderland’s visit in September
1991, complete with a fetching
blond hair-do. The poster
followed a profile of the then
27 year old Boro skipper which
pointed out that as well as
Tony winning back to back
promotions with his local club
in 1987 and 1988 he had at one
point made 111 consecutive
league appearances between
January 1985 and September
1988.
Sunderland’s last ever trip to
Ayresome Park in September
1994 saw Adrian Bevington
interview former Boro,
Sunderland and Newcastle man
Alan Foggon. ‘What happened
at Roker Park?’ he was asked.
“It was fine at first” replied
Foggon who continued, “but
when Bob Stokoe was sacked
and Jimmy Adamson took over
the problems began. Adamson
didn’t want any of the senior
pros so individually he called in
myself, Jim Montgomery and
others, and bombed us out.
I only played once more and
Sunderland were relegated.”
Later in the same issue the
welcome to Sunderland started
with, “A visit from Sunderland
is always a special occasion”
before going on to outline the
history of the club, stating, “The
Rokermen were one of the first
giants of the game by the turn
of the century and had finished
in the league’s top two 11 times
by the outbreak of World War
Two – higher than Boro have
ever achieved.”
More recently Sunderland’s visit
to Teesside in April 2017 was
a Premier League encounter.
Ugo Ehiogu was pictured on
the cover as part of a tribute to
a highly respected player who
had just passed away. The same
issue included a column from
former Premier League referee
Jeff Winter who remembered
that he officiated at Sunderland
games over 30 times. At the
time of this game Steve Agnew
was Middlesbrough manager
and Winter revealed in taking
Dickie Ord’s Testimonial against
Steaua Bucharest (A game
featured in last weekend’s
‘Testimonial Tales’) it was, “…a
far from friendly encounter, due
to the antics of the Romanians.
I remember inviting Steve
Agnew to have a ‘free one’ on
their most annoying midfielder,
he duly obliged before quickly
being substituted.” Winter went
on to recall refereeing the first

AWAY DAY
ANECDOTES…
WITH
For all the travelling we do
covering Sunderland, matches
against Middlesbrough
are a joy for the fact
there is so little travel!
It has been calculated that this
season Sunderland will travel
4,965 miles in the Championship
– that’s without cup matches
at Fulham, Shrewsbury and
Sheffield Wednesday. I suspect
Boro fans probably have
similar thoughts. It’s certainly
one of the more attractive
constituents of the Wear-Tees
‘derby’. This is not the place to
begin a debate as to whether
it is a derby by the way!
The Riverside Stadium is the
only Middlesbrough stadium I
have known. When I embarked
on my commentary career in
Riverside Stadium
1992, I missed out on Ayresome
Park and I’d never been there
as a fan either. In all the years
I’ve been covering matches
at Middlesbrough it has seen
very little change, though sadly
now it is no longer graced by
the late great Alistair Brownlee
who passed away in 2016. He
was the voice of Middlesbrough
and had a personality to match.
He was taken far too soon.
Of course, there has been a
fairly considerable overlapping
when it comes to players who
have appeared for both clubs
from Lee Cattermole and Grant
Leadbitter to Julio Arca and
Boudewijn Zenden plus a good
few more. Backroom staff too
have come and gone including
fitness guru Nick Allamby
and the current Sunderland
assistant kit manager Andrew
Thompson, Tommo! AND of
course, there’s Tony Mowbray!
Benno has close connections
with Middlesbrough too as he
used to coach the youngsters
at the club and his son Andre
signed for Tony Mowbray,
and so it is that when we
arrive at the Riverside there
is inevitably much meeting
and greeting for the MBE.
I do recall one match at the
Riverside when I was covering
Newcastle United. ‘The Sun’, I
believe it was, tried to steal the
show by employing topless girls
to run on the pitch to distract
Paul Gascoigne. One of the
more bizarre incidents I have
ever witnessed at a football
match. I thought as I was
writing this that maybe it was
all a figment of my imagination,
but I have checked its veracity
and indeed it is true. It was in
December 1998 when the two
girls ran on in Christmas outfits
minus their upper garments
and chased Gazza around the
pitch! I’ve seen a chicken on
a pitch at Huddersfield and
a dog at Gillingham, but I
suspect that the Boro incident
tops both of those!

STARS SURPRISE LOCAL
SCHOOLCHILDREN AT BEACON
Show Racism the Red Card hosted their annual educational
event at the Beacon of Light this week, as local schoolchildren
were treated to a surprise visit from four special guests.
Sunderland AFC legends Gary
Bennett MBE and Kevin Ball
joined Bailey Wright and
Aji Alese in a Q & A session,
much to the delight of the
students in attendance.
Speaking about the importance
of events which focus on
combating racism through
education and reflecting on
the afternoon’s proceedings,
Alese said: “Events like this are
really important. It’s a shame
that we’re still having to have
them but it’s important to get
the message across, especially
to youngsters because they’re
the future generation.
“I really enjoyed the session. We
got asked some very interesting
questions, some questions that
we were stumped with and didn’t
have answers to, but it shows
the way the kids think and the
way that their brain processes
things, so hopefully we got
messages across to them that
they can take away and hold
onto for the rest of their lives.”
Fellow defender Wright feels
progress has been made in
combatting racism, albeit admits
there’s still work to be done:
“We’re handing over the baton
as we get older to the next
generation of young inspiring
people. You saw the number of
kids here today getting educated
around racism and what Show
Racism the Red Card has been
doing in schools, football and
in sport, it’s come a long way.
“There’s still a long way to
go in tackling racism but
the education around it is
important. We are educating
and putting the time and effort
into the next generation, not
just with Show Racism the Red
Card but in all walks of life.”
Former SAFC skipper, Ball,
added: “After being involved
with Show Racism the Red Card
for 27 years, whenever these
events come up, I like to sit
and listen to the young people
to hear what they have to say.
It’s interesting what questions
they ask you and it’s interesting
reflecting in your own head, what
your own experiences were.”
Ball was also quick to heap
praise on the Foundation of
Light for its ongoing work
within the community. “Places
like the Foundation of Light
where they can come along
and learn is of huge importance
to the city of Sunderland and
the surrounding areas.”

Rob Mason searches for players from the past.
Former Sunderland and Middlesbrough fullback
JOHN KAY...
R&W: What are you up to
these days John?
JK: I work for a Housing
Association called Homesafe.
I help people with housing,
benefits and mental health. I
really enjoy what I do and the
organisation I work for have
been absolutely fantastic,
especially during lockdown.
I’ve been lucky.
R&W: You were at the
Blackburn match – what did
you make of Sunderland?
JK: I thought they played very
well. I thought it would be
a tough game but I thought
Sunderland dominated the
game, especially in the first
half. If that’s the standard of
this division then I think that
match should have given the
young lads at Sunderland a lot
of confidence.
R&W: Do you keep much
of an eye on football and
Sunderland in particular?
JK: I don’t get to many games
but I do follow Sunderland. In
the past a lot of my work meant
I couldn’t get to many games
but I’ve also got dogs and I feel
a bit guilty if I go to watch the
football on my day off when the
dogs are sitting in the house,
but I am hoping to get to some
more games this season.
R&W: In your first season at
Sunderland you played every
game as the third division was
won in 1987-88 – how do you
look back at that campaign?
JK: The thing is, the season
before I was at Wimbledon and
half way through that season I
did my Achilles so I had been
out for six months. When I
came to Sunderland I was just
getting over the injury so to
play every game was a little bit
of a surprise. We dominated
that season. We had the best
players and were the best team
in that league by far.
R&W: On the infamous day
Benno showed David Speedie
the sights of the Clock
Stand paddock you looked
desperate to join in. Have you
forgiven Benno for not letting
you make it a tag-match?
JK: It was little and large –
Benno picks on the little ‘uns
but no I’ve definitely not
forgiven him!
R&W: In the 1990 Play-off
semi-final you flattened
Newcastle’s Billy Askew but
the pair of you went back a
long time so didn’t he see it
coming?
JK: I’m from Great Lumley
and Billy lived across the road
from me. He was a couple of
years older than me but I used
to play football in the street
with him when we were kids.
He joined Middlesbrough and
everyone looked up to him
because he was an apprentice
and on the way to becoming
a pro footballer. He played
for Hull for a lot of years and
I still see him now and again. I
think he knew what was about
to happen when I went in for a
tackle on him!
R&W: You honestly admitted
you weren’t fit enough to play
in the 1992 FA Cup final. How
close were you?
JK: Malcolm Crosby gave me
every chance to be fit. When
you have a good cup run league
fixtures can mount up and we
had a lot of games in a short
space of time. It was a match
at Brighton where I got hurt.
Red&White / 41
I knew I was really struggling
and to be fair to the lads you
can’t just turn up on the Friday
and say, ‘I’m going to be fit for
the Saturday’ knowing full well
you aren’t going to be. I knew I
wasn’t going to make it.
R&W: Before you came to
Sunderland you had a spell
on loan to Middlesbrough
from Wimbledon. Have you
any memories of your time at
Ayresome Park?
JK: I was there for a couple
of months and thoroughly
enjoyed my time. The late Willie
Maddren was the manager. He
was an absolutely top bloke and
they had some good players.
Tony Mowbray was there and
so was Gary Pallister and Tony
McAndrew. Irving Nattrass had
presented me with a trophy
called the CD Watson Cup
when I was captain of my Junior
School in Great Lumley. He
was with Newcastle then and
then I was playing with him at
Middlesbrough. He used to
pick me up at Chester-le-Street
and give me a lift.
R&W: You can’t ever do a
Sunderland interview without
being asked about your last
game when you broke your
leg and pretended to be
rowing a boat when you were
carried off on a stretcher.
Were you not in agony?
JK: Whyaye – my leg was
broken! I was never to be seen
again but I had a great time
at Sunderland and I was very
fortunate.

THREE’S
A CROWD
Club historian Rob Mason examines the 50th anniversary of the 1973 FA
Cup win and the 110th anniversary of 1912-13 when the league title was
won and the cup final reached. The series also commemorates the 130th
anniversary of the 1892-93 season when the league title was retained.
6-0 wins over Aston Villa and
Royal Arsenal on this weekend
in 1893 and 1913 plus the
start of the run to the most
glorious of FA Cup triumphs
at this stage in 1973 make this
weekend a momentous one
in the trio of seasons being
featured in this series.
1972-73
Having progressed through
the third round of the FA Cup
by eliminating Notts County,
a fourth round home tie with
Charlie Hurley’s Reading
was the prize and we will
deal with that in the next
issue against, of all teams –
Reading.
In the meantime
Sunderland returned to
league action. There had
already been the start
of a revival as the Lads
looked to climb away from
the lower reaches of the
table and this continued
with a draw at Swindon
followed by a home win
over Millwall. Both games
involved debuts. The latest
piece of the cup-winning
jig-saw was left back Ron
Guthrie who made his bow
at Swindon on this weekend
in 1973. A week later Celtic
legend John Hughes made
what proved to be his only
appearance for Sunderland.
Playing alongside his brother
Billy- it remains the last time
two brothers played alongside
each other for Sunderland – as
detailed in today’s Historian
page. Unfortunately John was
injured early on and although
he limped through the rest of
the match he was never able to

play for the club again.
At Swindon a late goal from
Ian Porterfield cancelled out
Joe Butler’s first half opener.
It was an important goal –
but obviously not Ian’s most
important strike of the season.
Second half goals by Dennis
Tueart and Bobby Kerr saw
off Millwall on a day that was
memorable for pop star Lulu
doing the half-time draw!
1912-13
This weekend in 1913 Charlie
Buchan was Sunderland’s
hero, as he was so often.
In what was described in
contemporary reports as a
thrilling game with Oldham
Athletic the man who
remains the club’s all time top
league goal-scorer scored an
equaliser quarter of an hour
from time, after the Latics
had led since the 14th minute,
through Gilbert Kemp. Any
supporters who turned up

the opening goal as the game

was the second week in a
row The Lads had smashed
the opposition for six, having
walloped Aston Villa 6-0 in the
league – as described in our
last issue. January 28th saw
Sunderland only score four but
they did win 4-2 against fourth
placed (Sheffield) Wednesday.
On a day when Billy Dunlop
made his Sunderland debut,
James Gillespie and Jimmy

at Tottenham he scored in
the 14th minute to bring
Sunderland level after they
had fallen behind early on to a
goal from Billy Minter. On the
stroke of half time Harry Low
grabbed the winner which took
Sunderland to a highest of the
season so far fourth position.
1892-93
This weekend in 1893 a hat-trick
by Jamie Millar, two goals from
Johnny Campbell and a goal
from Davy Hannah delivered a
6-0 hammering of Arsenal in
the FA Cup – or Royal Arsenal
in the English Cup to use the
names that were current at that
time. The Gunners were still
a non-league club, although
despite their hammering at
Sunderland – where they were
5-0 down by half time - they
were elected into the Football
League at the end of this
season – as were Newcastle
United, Middlesborough
Ironopolis, Liverpool and
Rotherham Town as the league
was expanded.
Jamie Millar scored a cup hat-trick against
Royal Arsenal and followed it up with a goal
in the win over Wednesday.

A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to
make you aware of new measures
being taken across all of football
to ensure everyone can have a safe
and enjoyable experience. We are
supporting strong action from the
FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle
anti-social and criminal behaviours
that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of
the risks to fans and staff – pyros
can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius

while entering the pitch endangers
players, managers and match

We know those who commit these
illegal acts do not represent the
majority of supporters.

Sunderland bounced back from defeat against Middlesbrough to
take a well-earned point against an organised Norwich team at
the Academy of Light on January 13.
The match was a tale of two
defences with both teams
defending in numbers letting
little get past them during a
tense 90 minutes.
After a cagey opening 15
minutes, Norwich carved out
the game’s first opportunity
when midfielder Ben Watt tried
his luck from 20 yards out, but
Jacob Carney comfortably
collected his shot.
The visitors continued to apply
the pressure and came inches
from opening the scoring when
Harry Brook’s curling effort from
out on the left came crashing
back off Carney’s crossbar.
Sunderland came close to taking
the lead when Ethan Moore’s
perfectly timed cross from
the right fell to the feet of Ellis
Taylor inside the box, but the
Norwich defence managed to
make a last-ditch block to clear
the danger.
The hosts squandered a great
chance on the stroke of half
time when Nathan Newell
advanced past his man and
picked out Tom Scott on the
edge of the box – Scott’s first
time shot cleared McCracken’s
crossbar.
Sunderland started the second
half as they finished the first on
the attack, but Scott dragged
his attempt from outside the
box wide of McCracken’s far
post.
Moore was next to come close
to finding the back of the net
after Sunderland broke down
the left, but Ellis Taylor’s floated
cross was an inch too high for
Moore to direct the ball towards
McCracken’s goal.
In a game of few chances
Sunderland kept pushing
forward in the final few minutes
to find a breakthrough goal, but
Norwich held firm to claim a
point.

SAFC WOMEN 3
DURHAM WOMEN 2
Sunderland Women came from behind twice to achieve a thrilling
victory over Durham Women in the River Wear Derby at Eppleton
last Sunday.
Backed by a bumper crowd of
1,164 – a record attendance
since being back in the Barclays
Women’s Championship - Mel
Reay’s side fought back in the
second half to claim the spoils.
Sarah Wilson opened the
scoring for Durham before
Lasses’ new signing Liz Ejupi
equalised just before half time.
Rio Hardy converted a
penalty in the 61st minute,
but Sunderland fought back
once again, with Abby Holmes
and substitute Katy Watson
grabbing the second and third
respectively within the last 10
minutes.
Durham started on the front
foot in the first half, with Lily
Crosthwaite’s cross-shot looping
over the bar 10 minutes in.
On the 15 minute, Sarah Wilson
connected with a Beth Hepple
corner and headed past Claudia
Moan.
After a promising start to her
debut, Ejupi announced herself
on Wearside with a goal against
her former club. The striker
chopped onto her left foot
and whipped a shot across the
‘keeper and into the bottom
corner.
Both sides were fully committed
to the derby occasion,
highlighted in the 50th minute
as Wilson and Holmes collided
in a robust 50/50 challenge, with
both players up on their feet
straight away.
Mollie Lambert was brought
down in the box on the
60th minute, with Hardy
converting her penalty from the
spot to give Durham a 2-1 lead.
The Lasses responded brilliantly
once again and got their rewards
in the 83rd minute as Emma
Kelly’s corner dropped to the
feet of Holmes, who smashed a
shot past Naoisha McAloon to
equalise yet again.
Lee Sanders’ side almost replied
swiftly, but Moan made a great
stop to deny Wilson, tipping the
shot over the bar.
Substitute Katy Watson took
only eight minutes on the pitch
to make a crucial impact. The
ball was played through the
centre and Watson used her
pace to get there first and poke
a shot past the goalkeeper to
score Sunderland’s third and the
eventual winner.
With six minutes added on, the
Lasses still had to keep their
focus, and defended brilliantly
to see out a momentous derby
victory at Eppleton.
