Aside from an embarrassing FA

Cup third round exit at home to

League Two Stevenage, Aston

Villa’s transformation under

new boss Unai Emery has been

nothing short of exceptional.

The former Arsenal gaffer

replaced Steven Gerrard in

November after the Liverpool

legend had been dismissed

following a dismal start to the

season in which they had won

just twice in the league and

only sat above the relegation

places on goals scored.

Under Emery, however, Villa

have quickly turned things

around, winning four games

from eight to move up to

mid-table, 10 points clear of

the drop zone. That run has

included victories over highflying

Manchester United,

Brighton & Hove Albion and

Tottenham Hotspur.

After leaving his role at Rangers,

ex-England international

Gerrard’s tenure at Villa as

successor to Dean Smith lasted

less than a year following just

13 wins from 40 league games.

Gerrard’s high-profile signings

included Barcelona forward

Phillipe Coutinho, Sevilla

defender Diego Carlos and

French midfielder Boubacar

Kamara. A further £13m was

spent on Wolverhampton

Wanderers defender Leander

Dendoncker. However, Carlos

suffered a serious ankle injury

on his home debut and Kamara

has only just returned to action

following a knee ligament injury

sustained against Southampton.

Emery’s first move in the

January window saw Villa

snap up Spanish left-back

Álex Moreno for £13.2m

from Real Betis.

ONE TO WATCH:

ARGENTINIAN / AGE: 30

The arrival of Carlos Alcaraz as

A World Cup winner with Argentina last month where he performed

heroics in the penalty shootout victory over France, Emiliano Martínez

is now in his third season at Villa Park. The towering goalkeeper ended

a 10-year association with Arsenal to move to Villa in September

2020, lifting the FA Cup in his final act as a Gunner. The colourful

character had joined Arsenal from Independiente, but his first-team

appearances in north London were interspersed with six spells out

on loan. Martínez, who saved a penalty on his Premier League debut

for Villa, played every minute of his first campaign with the club and

was named Player of the Season at the end of that term. He kept 11

clean sheets last season and has three to his name in 17 appearances

this time around. Capped 26 times by his country, he won the Golden

Glove in Qatar.

THE BOSS:

SPANISH / AGE: 51

Aston Villa’s appointment of Unai Emery was a sign of the club’s

ambition. Emery is a European specialist, having won the Europa

League three seasons in a row at Sevilla before lifting the trophy

again with Villarreal when they beat Manchester United in 2021. The

Spanish club also reached last year’s Champions League semi-finals

under Emery. Emery returned to England with something of a point to

prove following his sacking by Arsenal in 2019. His 18-month stint at

the Emirates has been painted as a failure, but tasked with following

Arsène Wenger, Arsenal finished fifth in his full season in charge,

and he led the Gunners to the Europa League final where they lost

to Chelsea. A former midfielder as a player, Emery’s management

career began in his native Spain in 2004 with Lorca Deportiva. He later

enjoyed league and cup success with Paris Saint-Germain prior to his

arrival at Arsenal.

James Ward-Prowse celebrates his second

Nathan

Jones

Dear supporters,

welcome back to St

Mary’s for this

afternoon’s Premier League

match against Aston Villa.

I would like to welcome Unai

Emery, his staff and players,

and the travelling supporters

to Southampton for what

will be another tough test

against a team that have

shown an improvement

under their new manager.

Unai is a top-class coach who

has achieved unbelievable

things in Spain and in

Europe, so it comes as no

surprise to see him have an

impact on his new club.

A week is a long time in

football, and for us last

week felt hugely significant

in lifting everybody around

the club, proving we are

on the right path with

the work we are doing.

Selhurst Park and Goodison

Park are two grounds where

you really have to fight to

get a result – atmospheric

stadiums where the home

crowd make it tough for you.

To come away with two

wins on the road, in the FA

Cup and Premier League

respectively, showcased the

strength of character of this

group, particularly given we

were forced to come from

behind on both occasions.

That is not easy to do against

any Premier League club,

especially away from home.

In between those games, we

had the small matter of taking

on one of the best teams in

the world in Manchester City.

We know all about their

quality, as well as their

proud record in the Carabao

Cup in recent seasons, so it

was another measure of our

progress that we were able

to get through to the semifinals

with a clean sheet in

front of our supporters.

This was not a case of hanging

on to a lead and riding your

luck – we defended superbly

as a team from front to back,

restricting a great side to

zero shots on target, and

always carried a threat of

our own going forward.

These performances and

this team spirit must be the

blueprint for us now. We’ve

proved we can find different

ways to win games, but we

have to kick on and keep

the momentum building.

Your support here at St

Mary’s is absolutely key to

that. Your backing on the

road has been wonderful to

see, but this is our home and

we have to make the most

of that advantage from now

to the end of the season to

get to where we want to be.

We March On.

Saints seal Alcaraz transfer

Southampton Football Club

is delighted to confirm it

has completed the transfer

of midfielder Carlos Alcaraz

from Racing Club.

Alcaraz, 20, has put pen to

paper on a four-and-a-halfyear

contract at St Mary’s,

becoming the second signing

for the Men’s First Team this

month, following on from the

arrival of Croatia international

winger Mislav Oršić the

previous week.

A burgeoning talent in South

America, the creative Alcaraz

has risen to prominence while

starring in his home country

of Argentina over the past

three years.

Alcaraz, who is known as

‘Charly’, made his debut for

Racing Club at the age of

17, in January 2020, quickly

establishing himself as a

regular and going on to make

a total of 83 appearances for

the side, scoring 12 goals.

Southampton manager

Nathan Jones said: “Charly’s

arrival is another major

addition for us. There has

been a lot of interest around

Europe, so it’s great to get

him in and also to have done

it quite early in the month.

“He will give us a really

exciting option and add a bit

more creativity into the side,

which is something that will

be a real benefit to us.

“I know how determined he is

to get started and to help us,

so we’re looking forward to

getting to work with him and

we’ll also make sure he has

all the support needed to get

settled in here.”

WOMEN UPDATE

SAINTS FALL TO FIRST

DEFEAT SINCE AUGUST

Saints suffered a

losing start to 2023

as a stubborn Lewes

team took all three points

away from St Mary’s in the

Barclays Women’s

Championship.

Courtesy of a fast start, the

first shooting opportunity

arose in the 13th minute when

Georgie Freeland stepped

inside from the left wing,

bending her right-footed effort

goalward and almost over the

head of Lewes goalkeeper

Sophie Whitehouse via a hefty

deflection.

From the resulting corner,

Saints worked the ball back

cleverly to Lucia Kendall who

whipped in an enticing cross

toward the far post, but she

was denied an assist through

some brave defending from the

away side, who managed to

get a block on the ball before

hacking it to safety.

More heroics were required

shortly after in the 25th

minute when Katie Wilkinson

stole the ball in the middle

of the park and set flying

full-back Ella Morris through

on goal with an excellent pass,

the defender taking a touch

before firing her effort across

goal from an increasingly tight

angle, forcing Whitehouse into

an impressive fingertip stop.

Emily Kraft’s header shocked

Saints just 10 minutes later,

though, the defender towering

at the far post to meet an

in-swinging corner, evading the

gloves of Kayla Rendell from

close range, and propelling her

side into the lead against the

run of play in the 37th minute.

end of further bad news as

Megan Collett was forced off

through injury, Megan Wynne

taking her place.

After the half-time interval,

Saints started brightly as they

looked to level proceedings.

A first opportunity to do so

came almost instantly courtesy

of Alice Griffiths’ driving

run from deep midfield, the

Welshwoman taking on and

skilfully beating two players.

She then fed Sophia Pharoah

with a reverse pass, which she

subsequently flicked behind

her and into the path of

teammate Wilkinson, but the

final effort on goal was bravely

blocked by the onrushing

Whitehouse, who read the

situation well.

After a lively start, the game

reduced to a simmer until the

75th minute when Rendell

was called into action to

save Kraft’s header from

close proximity following an

in-swinging set-piece. With

15 minutes left to play, Saints

A left-sided free-kick from just

embers may have offered a

route back into the game, but

Kendall couldn’t keep her strike

Southampton’s

second

signing of

the January

transfer window has

echoes of the club’s

summer recruitment

strategy, as Argentinian

youngster Carlos Alcaraz

was welcomed to St

Mary’s on a four-and-ahalf-year

contract.

Whilst the capture of

30-year-old Croatian

World Cup star Mislav

Oršić signalled that

Saints are also prepared

to acquire players at the

peak of their powers,

Alcaraz, ten years his

junior, is the type of

long-term project Saints’

reputation in the market

has been built on.

‘Charly’, as he is known

in his homeland, arrives

in England as one

of South America’s

brightest prospects.

A combative, feisty

midfield player, Alcaraz

has a relentless engine

and the ability to go

from box to box, with his

well-timed runs into the

opposition penalty area

earning him nine goals for

former employers Racing

Club last season, whose

league campaign drew

to a close in October.

His last goal for Racing

was perfectly timed – two

minutes from the end

of extra time to win the

of the Community

Shield, against Boca

Juniors, on his final

appearance for the club.

Fittingly, it came

through ghosting into

the box and heading

home a cross, which

had already become

Alcaraz’s trademark

when still a teenager.

That was not the end

of the drama, however,

as his goal sparked a

sequence of events that

became global news,

as seven players were

sent off in the melee

that followed, including

Alcaraz himself for

removing his shirt and

celebrating in front of

the Boca Juniors fans.

That took the total of

red cards in the final to

ten, with seven going

to Boca players, forcing

the referee to end the

game early and award

the trophy to Racing.

All in all, it was an

eventful way to bow out

for Alcaraz, who made

his Premier League

debut last weekend, two

months on from that

extraordinary send-off.

It perhaps goes some

way to explaining why

the 20-year-old hopes

Saints can help him

improve by being “calmer

on the pitch”, but this is

a player with enormous

potential to complement

the fire in his belly, whose

exploits back home

had caught the eye of

Champions League clubs.

“I’m thrilled to be at this

club, it’s fantastic,” he

said, speaking in his

first interview as a

Saint, via a translator.

“After my first few hours

at the club facilities, I can

see how great it is and

I’m delighted to be here.

“It’s a brilliant club. I’ve

seen lots of videos about

how everything works

at the club, so that’s

what convinced me.

“I knew it would be a

challenge in my career,

so I wanted to take it,

knowing I was joining a

great club, and that’s just

what I’ve found here.”

Alcaraz has very little

grasp of English, but his

agent speaks it well, and,

more pressingly, Saints

boss Nathan Jones is

fluent in Spanish, the

language of Argentinians.

“I’ve only spoken to him

briefly. We talked about

where I’d like to play

and some other things,”

Alcaraz revealed.

“It’s really good to know

that the coach speaks

Spanish because that’ll

help me over the first

few days in terms of

understanding the way

he and his coaching staff

train and work in general.”

Among his new

teammates, Spaniard

Juan Larios is only a year

younger than Alcaraz,

while the new boy has a

compatriot in five-cap

Argentina international

Willy Caballero, both

of whom will help

him settle.

His 30-minute cameo at

Goodison Park was, by

Jones’s admission, longer

than planned, given

Alcaraz’s gruelling week

and having gone two

months without playing,

but will serve him well.

“He’ll get better,” Jones

said after the game. “I

don’t think he suddenly

pulled up any trees with

his performance today,

but he only arrived late

Tuesday night after being

stuck on the M3 and

18 / saints

then did his medicals

all day Wednesday.

“He watched us play

Manchester City

and then did a little

session on Thursday

and then he’s into a

Premier League game.

“It’s quite a story and I

didn’t envisage putting

him on for so long, but

we felt we’ve got to

get him up to speed,

which was a brave

decision considering the

magnitude of the game,

but we feel that once he

gets up to speed we will

see a real quality player.”

Introduced with the

scores level, Alcaraz

watched James Ward-

Prowse win the game for

Saints with a textbook

free-kick 12 minutes

from time – his second

goal of the day.

Alcaraz had already

expressed his admiration

for his new captain

at his unveiling.

“I really like Ward-

Prowse’s game – I

don’t know if I’ve

said that right!” he

laughed, sheepishly.

“I really like the way he

plays because he has the

same dynamic as me in

terms of driving forward. I

think it’ll be very helpful

for me to watch him and

have him as a teammate.

“He’s very good at freekicks!

I really like his

shooting technique.

I’m going to learn a lot

with him by my side.”

“My attributes include

shooting from outside the

box, headers and getting

into the box,” Alcaraz

said of his own game.

“That’s what I really like.

“I enjoy linking up with my

teammates, I try to push

forward and drive towards

goal. I think those are

some of my attributes.

“I’d like to improve my

game and maybe be

calmer on the pitch, so

that I develop in the

best way possible.

“I always want to keep my

cool and the club will help

me do that. I’d say that’s

also one of the reasons

why I’ve come here.”

saints / 19

“Playing for

the national

team is one

of my dreams,

but I know

I’ll have to

work hard for

that. I hope it

happens one

day.”

In the immediate term,

Saints have acquired a

fighter with an eye for

goal ready to get stuck

into the club’s quest for

Premier League survival.

In the longer term,

Alcaraz dreams of

following in the footsteps

of his countrymen,

inspired by Argentina’s

World Cup triumph in

Qatar last month that

sparked a tidal wave of

emotion on the streets

of Buenos Aires, an

hour north of his home

city of La Plata.

“I’m really excited to play

and train,” he said. “I’m

here to give 100 per cent

for this club and for the

shirt. I can’t wait to get

to know my teammates.

I’ll give my all.

“It was wonderful to

see Argentina win the

World Cup for the first

time in many years,

so it was brilliant.

“Of course, I dream of

playing for Argentina. I

know I have to work

very hard to get there.

“Playing for the national

Saints Goal

kickstarted for the

New Year thanks to

Vitality

Saints Foundation’s popular fitness programme, Saints

Goal, will return for a special New Year cohort, supported by

Southampton Football Club’s official wellness partner, health

and life insurer Vitality.

The newly refreshed health

and wellbeing programme –

consisting of a one-off 12-week

course which kicked off on

Wednesday 18th January – will

be based at the Southampton

Football Club stadium and

training ground, and aims to

support adults aged 35+ to live

healthy, active lifestyles.

The programme is part of

Southampton Football Club’s

commitment to support the

people of Southampton to live

healthy and active lives. Saints

Goal aims to give all participants

the tools they need to continue

to live a healthy and active

lifestyle after the face-to-face

support has concluded.

Taking a holistic approach to

health, those taking part will

be taken through how to eat

well and stay active, and the

associated health benefits

of doing so. The programme

will additionally incentivise

participants to make healthy

choices by providing rewards

when they do so.

The programme will conclude

with a celebration event for

participants on 15th April 2023,

with participants taking part in a

parkrun, followed by the men’s

first team game, Southampton

vs Crystal Palace at St Mary’s

Stadium.

Greg Baker, Director of Saints

Foundation & Community, said:

“We are delighted to be able

to continue our Saints Goal

programme for another group of

participants in 2023.

“Over the last few years, the

programme has supported

more than 250 people across our

city to change their lives for the

better and now, with Vitality’s

brilliant support, we can give it a

whole new lease of life.

“We would like to say a heartfelt

club’s way of connecting

with the local community.

Every year, we help

thousands of people live

healthier, happier lives, to

fulfil their potential and

feel proud of their city.

And 2023 is lining up to be

no different – from the

Saints Women providing a

special day for our schools

programme, to an exciting

new fundraising challenge.

There’s lots to get our

teeth into already…

SAINTS WOMEN

AT WOODLANDS

Last week saw Woodlands

College, one of our Community

Champion partner secondary

schools, welcome members of

the Saints Women first team

for a special coaching session.

Ella Pusey, Sophia Pharoah

and Paige Peake joined the

Woodlands Senior Girls team’s

after-school club, offering

insight, advice and positive

reinforcement to help develop

their players.

The trio spent time coaching

the girls through competitive

games but soon decided

management wasn’t for them,

swapping the sidelines for the

pitch and getting stuck in!

The girls enjoyed the

opportunity to see first-hand

the level our Women’s Team

now operate at, and grilled

Ella, Sophia and Paige on their

pathways into the professional

game. Let’s hope to see the

stars of tomorrow coming out

of Woodlands very soon!

Community Champions runs

in nine of the city’s secondary

schools, with a member of

the Saints Foundation team

working full-time with their

pupils to raise aspirations and

improve attainment. One of

their focuses is encouraging

more female participation in

football and using sport as

a way to shape leadership

potential in girls across

Southampton.

21

BY Duncan Holley

Looking back at

three Saints

matches played on

this date...

21ST JANUARY 1961

Saints victories on this

particular day are infrequent,

in fact only three post-war

league matches have ended in

wins. The first was in 1960/61

when, in a Second Division

game, Middlesbrough were

despatched 3-2 at The Dell

thanks to a Terry Paine shot

which took a deflection, a

Derek Reeves special and a

Harry Penk finish from 12 yards.

21ST JANUARY 1978

Seventeen years later and

Saints were back in the Second

Division but were mounting

a serious challenge for one of

the two automatic promotion

places. Notts County were the

visitors and for 20-year-old

Tim Coak, a local boy from

Portswood, it was his home

debut. The Football Echo

headline (see right) gives

two-goal Phil Boyer the credit

for Saints’ 3-1 victory which

only became comfortable in

the 89th minute when Steve

Williams flicked home from

close range. Most of the 20,174

in attendance went home

happy, even though Saints’

main rivals for promotion,

Bolton and Spurs, both also

posted wins. Many of that

crowd would have bought this

same Football Echo on the way

home, paying the princely sum

of 7p and would take extra

pleasure in noting that while

Saints were still tucked nicely

in third, along the South Coast,

managerless Portsmouth were

struggling third from bottom

of the Third Division.

They would have also learnt

Bournemouth had been held

1-1 at Dean Court in a Fourth

Division clash with Scunthorpe

and Johnny Giles had just

resigned as the Republic of

Ireland’s manager. Meanwhile,

the weather had virtually

wiped-out football north of

the border. Inside, on page

three, Peter East’s “With the

Saints” column focused on the

recent beating of Grimsby in

the FA Cup, after two replays

and looked forward to the

forthcoming Fourth Round tie

at Bristol Rovers while also

featuring a caricature of Saints

young defender Mike Pickering.

Further into the paper there

were photos of Netley Central

Sports, currently topping

Division 1 of the Hampshire

League, Southampton Senior

Division 2 side, Old Edwardians

and a smart looking Colden

Common squad who were

leading the Southampton

Sunday morning League.

The Football Echo first

appeared on Southampton

streets in 1898 and picking

one up on the way home from

a match became a ritual for

Saints fans that lasted well

over 100 years. Indeed, it often

found its way all over the world

and was the only way, back

then, that fans could keep up

to date with the goings on at

the club. It is sorely missed by

fans of the Saints and local

football. It has provided an

archive of the club’s fortunes

and without it there would

be no history books on

Southampton FC.

21ST JANUARY 2020

Before drowning in the

nostalgia of how better

things used to be, we end

with a brief mention of our

last win on this date, which

came just three years ago

when Nathan Redmond and

Stuart Armstrong goals were

responsible for a 2-0 win at

Crystal Palace. This elevated us

into the top half of the table.

Now that is nostalgia worth

wallowing in.

ONCE

KNOWN

AT THIS

ADDRESS

Southampton . Southampton .

BY BARRY WEBB

WITH STEVEN DAVIS

Today I feature a

much-admired player

who is no doubt

respected by Saints and Aston

Villa supporters alike:

midfielder Steven Davis MBE...

Born in Ballymena, County

Antrim, Northern Ireland on

New Year’s Day 1985, Steven

started at Belfast-based St

Andrew’s Boys Club before

moving to Villa in 2002,

making his first professional

appearance as a substitute

on 18th September 2004.

By October 2005, he was a

regular, missing only one

game in the 2005/06 season

when he was named Young

Player of the Year, Fans Player

of the Year as well as Player

of the Year. During his three

seasons at Villa he made a

total of 91 league appearances

and scored five goals.

In 2007 he transfered

to Fulham, but after 22

appearances, moved to Glasgow

Rangers – the club he had

supported as a lad – initially

on loan for six months, then

on a four-year contract.

Following the insolvency of

Rangers in 2012, he became

a free agent which led to him

signing a three-year contract

Steven celebrates his goal in our win over

Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on 3rd October 2015.

with the Saints on 6th July

2012, coinciding with our

return to the Premier League.

The deal was subsequently

extended to 2016 but in October

2014, he signed another to

keep him at Southampton

until 2018 – and in June 2016

extended again until 2019.

In all competitions, Steven

made 226 Saints appearances,

scoring 14 goals – including

two in a league match for

the first time in a memorable

2-1 away win at Spurs in May

2016. He made his 200th

appearance on 16th September

2017 against Crystal Palace,

scoring in the 1-0 win.

I spoke to Steven recently about

his time at Southampton: “I

loved it, first and foremost.

When you go to a new club it’s

a bit unknown but plans for the

Premier League made it a really

exciting time. I loved everything

the club stood for and how they

wanted to progress. Obviously

there was a special group of

players there at the time.”

Steven made his debut in our

first match on return to the

Premier League on 19th August

2012, away to champions

Manchester City. He scored

to put us 2-1 ahead only three

minutes after coming off

the bench – what he calls a

“perfect debut”. Although we

eventually lost, he feels that

“we showed that we could

compete at that level”.

He says that playing in the

Europa League was a whole

experience of “being back at

saints / 35

In action against West Bromwich Albion in September 2015 – wearing not quite the green of his

beloved Northern Ireland.

that level”. Although we didn’t

get past the early stages in

2015/16, Steven remembers

2016/17 as “really special” for

him and the fans, “playing

against massive clubs like

Inter Milan, home and away”.

In January 2019, Steven returned

to Rangers on a six-month

loan, then signed a permanent

contract. His 300th appearance

for the club in January came

in an unbeaten season when

they won the 2020/21 title –

their first since 2011. He

admits to the disappointment

that it happened during the

Covid pandemic with fans

missing at many matches.

A serious knee injury sustained

last December means that he is

out for the rest of the season,

which is when his contract runs

out. He told me that it’s far too

early to look long term but as

his rehabilitation progresses he

will have talks with the club.

Asked about how his wife feels

about having him around the

house, Steven laughed – “She’s

not too pleased!” – but added

that it for once meant he could

spend more time with his three

children over the festive period.

Playing for Northern Ireland

is, he says, “very special for

me”. He made his full debut

for his country in February

2005 and he played in the 1-0

victory over England in a World

Cup qualifier in September

2005. His first international

goal came against Wales in

October 2005, then in 2006,

he became Northern Ireland’s

youngest modern-day captain.

His two goals against Greece in

October 2015 helped Northern

Ireland to qualify for the

finals of Euro 2016. He recalls

that “as one of the smaller”

countries this meant so much

to “the group and the whole

country”. Steven became their

most-capped player when, in

October 2020, he made his

120th appearance against

Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Steven was awarded an MBE

in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday

Honours list, for services to

football: we too owe him our

gratitude for his considerable

contribution to the history of

Southampton Football Club.

Other players who have appeared* for the Saints and Aston Villa include John Burridge, Peter Crouch, Mark Draper, Stuart Gray, Danny

Ings, Hassan Kachloul, Alan Mcloughlin, Chris Nicholl, Kevin Phillips, Kevin Richardson, Paul Rideout, Matt Targett, Andy Townsend and

Mark Walters. * at least one appearance, permanent and/or on loan. Photos from the Holley collection.

My

Match

BY MARK FICKLING

Today’s guest writer

is Mark Fickling who

has written

extensively for the

Hagiology historians and

who celebrated 60 seasons

following the Saints in

2021/22. Hearing about this

series Mark asked to report a

match that holds special

memories for him and his

family. The date: 16th May

2015. The match:

Southampton vs Aston

Villa...

What could be arranged to

celebrate the 70th birthday of

my friend and lifelong Saints

fan, Bob Phillips? – a question

asked by his wife Alice. The

answer: hospitality in the

Our young record-breaker Sadio Mané.

President’s Lounge for the

last home game of the season

against Villa, close to Bob’s

birthday on 21st May.

With the lounge opening twoand-a-half

hours before the

12.45 kick-off, it meant picking

up Bob and Alice at eight

o’clock. But it was a glorious

sunny day, full of promise.

Alice kept the secret from

Bob for as long as possible

but neither of them knew

that Bob’s daughter Betty and

grandson Oscar – both Saints

fanatics – had travelled down

from Northumberland to join us

for the match. En route, making

an excuse about the car having

a problem, I pulled into the

Travelodge in The Avenue for us

to meet them.

The 2014/15 season was the

first for manager Ronald

Koeman and there was a chance

of qualification for Europe.

However, the Saints’ form

had dipped recently with only

one win and one draw in the

previous six games. Sensing

that the Villa match might be

an anti-climax, it turned out to

be a record-breaker.

The match exploded into life

when Graziano Pellè scored –

only for it to be ruled out by a

hotly disputed offside decision

which was later shown to be

incorrect. If VAR had existed

then and the goal had stood,

would the sequence that

followed have been the same?

A keeper’s eye view of Mané’s first goal... if he had been between the posts to see it!

saints / 37

Shane Long’s Goal of the Season – 5-0 to Southampton.

In the 13th minute Pellè flicked

the ball on for our Senegalese

winger Sadio Mané to score.

Sadio revealed later that, as he

ambled back for the restart, the

referee Robert Madley called

to him, “Hey Mané, come on!”

When he scored again with a

simple finish in the 14th minute

he was told by the referee that

he would give him a yellow card if

he continued his slow walk back.

He scored his third and best

goal in the 16th minute

following what Sadio described

as “the perfect ball across”

from Shane Long. This time

the referee told him that he

had broken the Premier League

record for the fastest hat-trick

– three goals in 176 seconds.

During that time the ball was in

play, astonishingly, for under a

minute. The 21-year-old record

– four minutes and 33 seconds

– by Robbie Fowler sounds

pedestrian by comparison.

Surely Sadio’s record will never

be broken.

More was to follow. Shane Long

enjoyed one of his best games

that day, adding two goals to

his assist for Sadio’s third. His

second was a 40-yard effort

that flew over the hapless Shay

Given to make it 5-0. That strike

was voted Goal of the Season

at the SFC Awards ceremony at

the end of the campaign.

Unfortunately, the Saints

conceded just before half-time:

Christian Benteke planted a fine

header past Paulo Gazzaniga

from a corner. But Graziano

Pellè did finally get on the score

sheet 10 minutes from time,

slamming home a cross from

Sadio – no offside this time.

Villa were thrashed by Arsenal

(4-0) in the FA Cup final a

fortnight later, allowing seventhplaced

Southampton to crown

their season by sneaking into the

Europa League.

So, was there a particular highlight

for Bob on his special day?

Was it the extraordinary hattrick

by Sadio? Or was it Shane’s

goal of the season? Or was it

meeting his all-time hero at

half-time, Mr President himself,

the legendary Terry Paine, over

from South Africa? Bob did not

even have to leave his seat as

Terry graciously wished him,

“Happy 70th birthday”. Perhaps

it was meeting other Saints

greats in hospitality or some

of the current squad in the car

park after the game?

Without doubt it was the whole

fantastic day that has lingered

in the memory.

It is not always easy being

a Saints fan but sometimes

the football gods do smile on

us. That day they positively

beamed on us.

Footnote: the fastest ever

hat-trick in league football

scored by James Hayter for AFC

Bournemouth against Wrexham

on 24th January 2004: 142

seconds.

SAINTS: Gazzaniga, Clyne, Fonte,

Alderweireld, Bertrand, Davis (Yoshida

72), Mané, Wanyama, Ward-Prowse

(Djuričić 80), Long, Pellè (Elia 85).

VILLA: Given, Vlaar, Ocore, Bacuna

(Lowton 67), Hutton, Cleverley,

Westwood, Delph, N’Zogbia

(Agbonlahor 57), Grealish (Sinclair 82),

Benteke.

Aside from an embarrassing FA

League Two Stevenage, Aston

Villa’s transformation under

new boss Unai Emery has been

nothing short of exceptional.

The former Arsenal gaffer

replaced Steven Gerrard in

November after the Liverpool

legend had been dismissed

following a dismal start to the

season in which they had won

just twice in the league and

only sat above the relegation

places on goals scored.

Under Emery, however, Villa

have quickly turned things

around, winning four games

from eight to move up to

mid-table, 10 points clear of

the drop zone. That run has

included victories over highflying

Manchester United,

Brighton & Hove Albion and

Tottenham Hotspur.

After leaving his role at Rangers,

ex-England international

Gerrard’s tenure at Villa as

successor to Dean Smith lasted

less than a year following just

13 wins from 40 league games.

Gerrard’s high-profile signings

included Barcelona forward

Phillipe Coutinho, Sevilla

defender Diego Carlos and

French midfielder Boubacar

Kamara. A further £13m was

spent on Wolverhampton

Wanderers defender Leander

Dendoncker. However, Carlos

suffered a serious ankle injury

on his home debut and Kamara

has only just returned to action

following a knee ligament injury

sustained against Southampton.

Emery’s first move in the

January window saw Villa

snap up Spanish left-back

Álex Moreno for £13.2m

from Real Betis.

THE BOSS:

UNAI EMERY

ONE TO WATCH:

EMILIANO MARTÍNEZ

ARGENTINIAN / AGE: 30

What shape are Aston Villa

in ahead of this encounter?

If there’s a club in the Premier

League that can match

Southampton (and Arsenal)

for high spirits right now, it’s

probably Villa. They feel like a

team in a good place and are

steadily climbing the Premier

League table.

Like Saints, they switched

managers just before the

World Cup, hiring Unai Emery

from Villarreal, and it’s had

quite the effect at Villa Park:

they’ve taken 13 points from

their last six games, including

wins over Manchester United

and Tottenham Hotspur.

They’ve scored in every game

Emery has presided over and

competed hard in each one too,

with a new tactical blueprint so

far proving a recipe for success.

What is Villa’s tactical

identity under Emery?

First and foremost, Emery’s

Villa have been defensively

solid. They line up in a 4-4-2

formation that demands

plenty of defensive work rate

from the wingers, while the

centre-backs are protected by

a responsible midfield pivot of

Boubacar Kamara and Douglas

Luiz.

In games against extremely

possession-dominant sides,

like Spurs and United, the

wingers tracked the opposing

full-backs all the way back

while their own full-backs

tucked into a narrow position,

creating a 6-2-2 look. It was

near-impossible to break

down.

To suggest they pride

themselves on clean sheets

would be an understatement;

Tyrone Mings recently

admitted they’re so focused on

that side of the game, they’re

even celebrating offside calls.

On the ball, they play short

from the goalkeeper and

circulate it around the

backline, attempting to bait

find joy against this Villa

side?

If Saints opt for a pressing

strategy, it will need to be

perfectly executed. Villa have

drawn several opponents onto

them and then played straight

through them of late (Leeds

United being a prime example),

so it comes with risk attached.

There’s a potential plus

matchup for Southampton

on the left flank; if Samuel

Edozie can emulate parts of

Wilfried Gnonto’s twisting,

turning performance from last

weekend, 38-year-old rightback

Ashley Young could be in

for another stern examination.

The battle between those two

was quite the sight, with Young

using every trick in the book (in

addition to showing remarkable

fitness and mobility for his age)

to keep Gnonto at bay for as

long as possible.

On the other flank, Álex

Moreno made an abrupt debut

off the bench last weekend

and struggled to immediately

match the rhythm and pace of

the Premier League. He’s one

week wiser now but may still

struggle at some points.

Lastly, you can’t even consider

a Southampton attacking

move right now without

envisioning James Ward-

Prowse at the heart of it,

whose free-kick radar is as

strong as ever.

Franny Benali

Last week was a great

one for Saints. Any

team that beats

Manchester City must play

well, and we did everything

right from the first whistle to

the last to book our place in

the semi-finals of the Carabao

Cup.

The St Mary’s atmosphere

was electric on the night and

the fans got to welcome our

new signing, Carlos Alcaraz.

I’d like to welcome him to

the club, too, and I hope his

time at Southampton is going

to be a very memorable one.

He made his debut from the

bench against Everton and

played his part in the win.

We were thoroughly deserving

of our win and it backed up

our FA Cup win at Palace.

Clearly, we were in need

of points in the Premier

League as well and it was

vital that we transferred the

performances to the league.

Winning a league fixture for

the first time since 1997 at

Everton’s Goodison Park saw

us do that. It had been a long

time since our last league

win, against Bournemouth in

October. We can now use our

momentum to build towards

the Villa game today.

It wasn’t the best of starts

for us at Everton after going a

goal behind, but whatever was

said at half-time worked and

the changes made helped us.

I was watching the game for

BT Sport Score and seeing the

resilience and character in the

second-half was very pleasing.

Having James Ward-Prowse

in the role he is currently

playing certainly helps him

and the team. As the captain,

he is able to instigate a lot of

the attacks and the pressing

from Saints, and we saw

that with his first goal.

It was a nice team move

with good build-up, but the

composure that he showed

at a crucial moment was

outstanding. Of course, the

second goal with his free-kick

was something that we almost

come to expect from him now.

That doesn’t make it any

easier, though, because he’s

still got to step up and deliver.

His set-pieces are almost like

a tennis or cricket bowling

machine where he’s that

consistent with his execution

and can produce it so often.

I’d like to end today’s column

by telling you about my latest

charity challenge that was

announced last week – and

you Saints fans can be a

part of it this time, too.

The Benali on Tour - South

Downs Challenge will be

taking place on Friday 24th

and Saturday 25th March

and will involve a marathon

(26.2 mile) hike along the

stunning South Downs Way,

from Brighton to Eastbourne.

It is a wonderful part of the

world to explore and we will

be raising funds for the Saints

Foundation, who continue

to do so much great work in

the city of Southampton.

We are looking for people

to sign up to join me and

my wife Karen for the trek

and I’d encourage everyone

to start fundraising and

training. It will be a long day

but a very rewarding one for

so many different reasons.

Franny
