OUNDERS’ LETTER
I
t isn’t “go bold or go home” - for Pulp Design Studios it’s “go
bold at home!” We love to create exciting and adventurous
homes that push the boundaries of design, while still
delivering interiors that are functional and livable, fun, and
fabulous. And in this issue of ICON, we’re celebrating that sense of
adventure in interior design.
We’ll show you the newest projects we’ve completed that think
differently about design, and the products we love to use to create
those wow-worthy rooms.
We’ll also give you tips for how to find your dream home, and how
to create your own sense of style and adventure in your interiors.
Since our last issue, we’ve also embarked on a new adventure
ourselves - we’ve launched our first vacation rental! Pulp House
Palm Springs is a gorgeous retreat that you can enjoy, too. We’re
showcasing the stunning interiors in this issue, and we give you the
links to Airbnb so you can stay in the beautiful desert hideaway.

adventure
Pulp Properties Launches Its First Vacation Rental:
Pulp House Palm Springs!
Pulp Design Studios and its new division, Pulp Properties,
is once again forging a cutting-edge path with an expansion into
real estate development and the experiential hospitality market.
The first Pulp House vacation rental property is now listed on Airbnb for
fabulous getaways in the Racquet Club Estates neighborhood of Palm Springs.
This historic mid-century Meiselman house, titled Pulp House Palm Springs,
is a fabulous location with hip and design-driven interiors, with Pulp Design
Studios acting as the design firm for Pulp Properties. This first Pulp House has
a Rat Pack meets the desert-chic vibe of nearby Coachella, creating a magical
destination that’s a bold reinvention of vacation rentals. Let’s take a tour!

shape while they’re on vacation, the Pulp House also offers workout gear such as weights and yoga mats.

From
the
Beginning
We’ll give you 6 reasons that explain how bringing Pulp Design Studios into your home
buying process helps you find the home of your dreams!
It’s a daring idea - asking your interior designer to join you on your house
hunting. But when clients bring us in from the very beginning of a project,
we’re able to help them find the house that will give them the best value
for their money and will be the right fit for their future dream home. This
longtime client knew that when she was searching for a home in Laredo, and
she called Pulp to help her source the perfect space. Together we found the
right location and the right “bones,” and then we went to work on a complete
renovation, including interior and exterior paint, appliances, reconfigured
floor plans, finishes, and also furnishings for the entire house. Read on to find
out why it’s so important to get Pulp involved before you even tour possible
homes and sites!
1LOCATION, LOCATION
The old saying in real estate about location
is so true! But Pulp looks a properties a little
differently. Yes, you should be in the city and
neighborhood that gives you what you need.
But we also consider if the home has enough
land for expansion. Or if it is large enough for
your family, or small enough for an empty nester.
For this Laredo home, we knew right away that
it was special and would give us room to work
our magic for our fabulous client and her family!
On the outside of the home, Pulp created an
exterior wall with doors and planters to offer
more privacyfor the entrance of the house. It
also adds incredible personality and curb appeal.

FROM THE BEGINNING
2THE BONES
When Pulp is looking at a house, we’re looking
for those special architectural details - the things
that make the home stand out. We want to see
tall ceilings, unique arches, fabulous floors and
gorgeous windows. Those are the things that will
bring so much personality to the space right from
the start. You can see the incredible ceiling that
was already in the home, here on the left. We gave
it a little zuzsh with a stunning chandelier.
In the entry below, there was already a stunning
barrel ceiling in brick. You just don’t see that every
day! We painted everything white and added
large mirrors with sconces to brighten the space.
The new paint alone was transformative, and the
mirrors help exaggerate the natural light, making
the entire space much brighter.
3THE FUNCTION KEY
The next question we’ll ask about a
prospective home is if it will function the way
you and your family need it to. We want to
know if it will fit your lifestyle - or if at least it
can be renovated to work that way. A house
can be stunning and the bones can be there,
but if it isn’t easily set up to work for you, it
will never be your dream home.
Our client in Laredo loves to entertain, so
big open spaces were key. This living room
originally had large columns and a sunken
floor that was just too dated. We filled in the
floor and removed the columns, creating a
light-filled space that is perfect for gathering
friends and family. We also added a fabulous
bar at one end with stunning brass inlay and a
wine cellar with a humidor.It’s often hard for
our clients to reimagine a space, but that’s our
job and we’re really good at it!

4HAVE IT YOUR WAY
If you’re buying an older home (even one from the late ‘90s), you’ll want
to change something about it. Usually that’s going to be the kitchen or the
bathroom - or both! Pulp understands what can be fixed with paint and new
furnishings, and what might need to be renovated. We can give you a really
good idea of what your budget will be to have it your way. Our clients really
appreciate that there are no surprises when we’re brought in at the start.
We also work collaboratively with builders to ensure we’re all on the same
page!
In this Laredo home, we wanted to create a complete oasis for our client in
the primary bedroom. There was already a fabulous private terrace right
outside. But the primary bathroom required a complete gut, so we created
a beautiful custom sanctuary, complete with a coffee and drink bar, heated
towel racks, steam shower, and champagne bubble soaking tub. Now that’s
having it your way, right?!

6PERSONAL DETAILS
It sounds strange to most people, but our
Pulp team really can look at a blank space
and see the end result. We spend a lot of
time getting to know our clients - how they
live, what they love, and who they are.
So when we have helped them buy their
dream home, we already have a good idea
of how the finished interiors will look. And
that includes curating personal details like
art, things our clients have collected on their
travels, antiques they’ve inherited, and more.
Even at the point of purchasing a house, we
can see where the best pieces of art should
go, where clients can show off mementos
from an incredible destination, and where
they can highlight the things they love!

We always push our clients to think beyond
the traditional ideas for a home’s design. Are
there rooms they’ve always dreamed of, but
didn’t think they could have? Would they
love a custom range hood in the kitchen and
extra storage? How about stunning details

How does Pulp select the perfect palette for the homes we design? We often find our best inspiration
just outside the doors! And then we add our signature element of surprise. Let’s take a look at
a lakeside Seattle home and how we built its color story.
PACKING A PUNCH
We always love to surprise and delight our clients, as we did with the bold punches of orange and deep red in the living room.
Those colors can be part of the stunning sunrises each evening on the lake, and they definitely add balance to this home’s color palette.
NATURALLY COLORFUL
Mother Nature has an incredible way with color, so for this gorgeous Seattle home,
we took our inspiration from the lake views and lovely plants and trees outside.
You’ll see an array of blues in the home, all from the every-changing color of the
lake’s water. And there are neutral colors like sand, bark, and stone in every room.

COLOR STORY
WATER COLORS
One of our favorite parts of this home is the open
staircase (Opposite page). We gave it a lot of
personality with a custom ombré stair runner in
watery blues. It looks stunning against the view
of the lake just behind it.
In the primary bedroom we had a local artist
plaster the bedroom wall, giving it a texture that
looks like waves of water.
In the outdoor setting, the neutral look for the
furnishings is accented with blues in the pillows.
The patterned fabric is from our collection
with S. Harris - it’s Old Cairo in the aptly named
Lagoon colorway.

COLOR STORY
MULTICOLOR TASKING
A lot of rooms now serve many purposes, like this
den. Our clients wanted a workout room, an extra
guest room, a TV room, and a great hang-out
space - all in one room! We made it happen, and
we made it chic and colorful. The bold orange is
perfect in a room where you need some energy.
And that’s also why we selected the incredible
wallpaper on the walls, too.

featured on page 53!
THE WONDERS OF WOOD
We love the look of natural wood, and this home was
perfect for an organic look like that. In the kitchen,
we expertly mixed several wood tones to create a
stunning look for the cabinetry and floor. And don’t you
love those windows around the top? The view of the
greenery makes it look as if the wood cabinets are the
source for the leaves.
We kept that neutral look going in the nearby dining
space. The art by Kevin Dotolo gave us the perfect
opportunity to bring in more of those gorgeous blues.

Voom
Not every home needs a major facelift - some just need a really good nip-and-tuck. There’s
real power in paint, great lighting, fab accessories, and gorgeous wallpaper. Take a look at this
4,300-square-foot home and see how Pulp took a very vanilla French Provincial home in Dallas and
gave it a modern update with our exclusive micro-renovation service.

MODERN MAKEOVER
When our clients contacted Pulp, they had a very specific
list of needs. They are a young and dynamic professional
couple that travel a lot for work. With a primary home
in Missouri, they realized that Dallas was becoming a
top destination for their jobs, so they purchased this
second home in Highland Park. Although they loved the
architecture, the interiors were too formal and needed a
modern update.
GLAM ENTRY
The entry had a lovely tile floor and a gorgeous
stair railing. But the details were too dated.
We added a new sconce that was a better
complement to the chandelier. And we put a
modern table and fun stools in the curve of the
stairs. It adds an unexpected moment that is
much more exciting as guests and family enter.

LUXE LIVING ROOM
The living room had gorgeous natural light flooding in and a beautiful curved ceiling. But the decor and design was too ho-hum and needed more
interest and modern design elements. We used a stunning blue grasscloth to cover the fireplace surround, creating a feature wall that updated
the room’s design and offering a textural treat for the eyes. Then we provided a gorgeous package of furnishings, accessories, and art to create an
updated and comfortable space that’s perfect for entertaining or hanging with family.

DELISH DINING ROOM
The dining room, like the rest of the house, wasn’t bad. It was
just a bit boring. Even our client’s little dog blended in. But look
at what wallpaper, new lighting, and fab furnishings can do –
now the room is a showstopper! It’s also a more modern space
that exudes sophistication.

LIGHT THE POWDER
The powder room, just off the entry, had
an out-of-fashion wall covering and ornate
lighting, creating a drab feeling. A lighter color
and subtler pattern for the wallpaper made all
the difference, as it lightened and brightened
the space. The modern sconces add a touch
of contemporary glam and the simpler mirror
gives a sleek and chic vibe.
KITCHEN DETAILS
The smallest details can change everything in how a room looks. Lighting,
new stools, paint, and custom storage in the cabinetry made this room
more modern and much more functional for our clients. Those new
fabulous pendants are some of our absolute favorites!

MAGICAL MAKEOVER
Architectural details like a niche can add visual
interest to a hall or entry, but people often don’t know
what to do with them. That’s where having an expert
team like Pulp can make all the difference. We added
an ombré wallcovering to make this niche pop, and
then we used a fabulous table and art to create an eyecatching
spot that gives major personality.
STUNNING OASIS
The primary bedroom was another superformal
room without a lot of life in it. We
wanted this to be an oasis, a space that would
reflect the chic sophistication of our very
modern clients, and a room that would help
them recharge after a long day. We worked
closely with our clients to source incredible
lighting, special pieces of original art, and
unique accents for each room. They love this
primary bedroom and its gorgeous new design!

PRO TIPS
how to style a
COFFEE
TABLE
The Pulp team loves to style a space - it’s the secret to a perfectly polished room. Pulp co-founder
Carolina Gentry shows you our top tips for setting up a coffee table like a pro!
STEP ONE: Check the shape of the table. It will tell you a lot about where
and how you might place items. A square table looks great when you place
items within a square grid, for example.
STEP TWO: We always like to have some sort of natural greenery or florals
on a coffee or cocktail table. A vase of branches like this also adds height to
the look, which is always a plus. Varying heights add visual interest!
We love a good pattern, and this chess set is just the ticket for adding that
design to the table. It’s also something that guests and family members will
be drawn to. But note that this is a super-stylish game, not just your same
old set.
Even if you aren’t a big reader, books are a great way to showcase your
personality and let people know what you’re into. Select large coffee table
books and line them up. Another trick is to select books that have colorful
spines that coordinate with the room’s palette.

Build on that base, adding more books as needed. But don’t go too high if
you plan to put other items on the table. A giant stack doesn’t work here.
Finally, add items that are more artistic and that have great texture. The
sculpture on the left is super-cool and fits the style and color of the room.
And the box can also store things like matches or the remote.

Your entire room doesn’t have to push every design boundary. Most people can’t live that
way in every space. But you can select fabulous pieces that will stand out with a little daring
and drama. Here are some of Pulp’s very favorites!
Remember that the showstopping piece in
your room can also be incredible hardware,
like this stunning door pulls from Lisa Jarvis.
They definitely give major personality and
drama on these doors from the Wise &
Wicked office space we designed.
We’re known for sourcing
incredible furniture that also
looks like a work of art - and this
Skeleton Chair from Sylvan is a
perfect example! It’s made of solid
ebony, and is hand-carved and
hand-polished. It was the perfect
look for our Wild & Wicked
showhouse space.
Lighting is a great way to bring the bling in a room.
We love the handblown designs from SKLO, including
the balloon pendants we used below. You can use any
color and any configuration to make it your own.
You can always make a bold statement in a quieter
palette. Look for unique shapes and fun pieces that
you can use just for kicks (get it?!). The Kedan stool
from OLY is handcarved in solid wood.

DECOR
Decor for the walls means much more than paint for the Pulp team.
Design ideas that push the boundaries and decorating rules are a hallmark of Pulp Design Studios. And
that includes how we finish the walls in a home. Unique materials, eye-catching wallpaper, fabrics, and
incredible techniques are all ways that we make sure the walls really talk in our clients’ homes!

VENETIAN PLASTER
Venetian plaster has been around since the Middle Ages - in fact, this material is exactly why frescoes have lasted for
centuries. It’s a very versatile treatment, and it gives an amazing glow to every room. It’s low maintenance and it has an
incredible visual impact when you enter a space. We love how the light is softened in any room with this finish on the
walls. Not only that, but this plaster is also mold-resistant and mildew-resistant. That’s why it was the perfect idea for
the walls in that stunning bathroom on the opposite page. You can introduce any pigment to the plaster,
so it can be eye-catching like that bold orange, or a softer look like the one in the bedroom below.

WOOD PANELING
If your idea of wood paneling is the knotty
pine look from the ‘70s, then think again!
Natural wood paneling can be gorgeous in its
natural state, especially if it’s refreshed with
a new finish or with paint. One of our favorite
looks is the bright white version on the
opposite page, paired with a bold wallpaper.
We also love using more modern wood panels
like those in the primary bedroom below. And
we’ve even created our own “paneling” look
by using molding to frame the walls. It looks
great in that soft grey below.

WALL DECOR
BOLD IDEAS
Pulp is always thinking beyond the ordinary,
so we’ve come up with some amazing looks for
walls. On this page, you can see a wallpaper that
we love that has the look of wood. It’s hard to
tell it’s wallpaper until you walk up to it!
In the bottom bedroom, we created wallpaper
from the schematics of a client’s favorite team’s
stadium. And in the beautiful art niche in a
primary bedroom, we used fabric from S.Harris
to create a fantastic textural backdrop.
Sometimes our favorite looks are found right in the bones of the house. We loved the look of this concrete wall so much that we just
kept the raw view. It’s an industrial chic idea that’s perfect with the softly upholstered bed.

gyms. These spaces need thoughtful design as much as any other room in the home,
so here’s how we add a bit of fun to our clients’ homes!
Home Gym
A gym can be as large or as small as our
clients need. We’ve provided spaces for
storing weights and equipment in rooms that
do double duty, like in the Pulp House Palms
Springs below. And we’ve worked with homes
that have attached basketball courts or full
home gyms.
Whatever our clients need for their wellness
goals, we’re always game for designing the
perfect spaces!
Bars & Wine
Storage
After the pandemic, we’ve all discovered how
much fun it can be to have your own super-cool
bar right in your house. The Pulp team has
designed home bars and wine storage
for so many of our clients. Some want a full bar
with its own fridge and sink, like the one on the
right. For others, we’ve suggested very cool
bar units that fit into unused space, like the
fabulous built-in above. And by the way,
that built in also has a drawer fridge -
so fabulous! We also tend to attract clients
who have a major appreciation for wine (we’ve
even designed a full winery!), so we
love to create the proper storage for those
clients. These spaces are fun for our
clients and their guests!

FUN & GAMES
Game Rooms
Entertaining at home can include fun game nights - for adults and
kids! When we find out that our clients love backgammon or are
obsessed with video games, we are ready to guide them to rooms
and spaces that will help them do what they love!
Game rooms can include media like big screens and gaming
consoles, or great seating and tables for board and card games.
And if you like more active things like table tennis, we can design
something that fits your style, too!

Play Spaces
We love to gather with our families, and we
know our clients do, too. So spaces that welcome
even the littlest family members are important.
These rooms can be just as stylish as the rest of
the gorgeous home - all you need are washable
paints and fabulous performance fabrics. Also key
to a great playroom is storage for every toy and
puzzle, as well as colors and patterns to stimulate
little minds.
As they grow, though, we want these spaces to
still work for them, so we also include things like
a fridge for sodas and water and a microwave
drawer for popcorn, as you can see in the
playroom on the opposite page.

Spa bathrooms are all the rage today. Here are Pulp’s pro tips that will help you
create a gorgeous oasis of your own, featuring our Seattle bathroom remodel.
Never skimp on the details when creating a spa bathroom! Texture, shine, and space are all important. We created an
extra-long vanity for our clients, with the perfect bright accent from our own Pulp Starburst pulls on the doors and drawers.
A textured grasscloth on the walls from Schumacher feels as beautiful as it looks. And always remember to bring in something
natural, like flowers or lovely branches.
Shoot straight onto the vignette. If you take the shot absolutely
centered, with no skew, you’ll get the perfect “hero shot!”
Life is messy, so don’t try to make every shot look perfect. You live
in your house - let it look lived-in.
Water is one of the best things to soothe both your body and your soul, so having both a freestanding tub and a fabulous shower is
important. But consider adding extras like a bench in the shower, or jets in the tub. They’ll take your relaxation to the next level.

Rim the rocks glass wth Spicy Salt.
Muddle Agave Syrup and lime juice in
