THE HEAD COACH

STEVE

COOPER

Good evening and welcome back

to The City Ground for tonight’s

Carabao Cup semi-final first leg

against Manchester United.

We return to The City Ground this

evening having previously defeated

Leicester City here last time out –

an afternoon that delivered exactly

what we were expecting in terms

of noise and the atmosphere.

We knew going into the game

the local rivalry between the

two clubs which added that

extra spice to the fixture, so to

pick up all three points and send

our supporters home happy

was particularly pleasing.

Saturday was an afternoon full

of mixed emotions as we battled

hard to pick up a point against

Bournemouth. We gave away a

poor goal despite starting the

game really well, but ultimately

it would have been incredibly

harsh if we weren’t to get

anything out of the game.

What was important to me was the

way we played in the second half,

especially away from home in the

Premier League, which ultimately

showed signs of real progression.

We were the team well in control,

and even after Sam levelled

things up late on, we wanted to

get the game started and go for

a winner which wasn’t to be.

It was great to hand debuts

to Danilo and Chris Wood on

Saturday, two of our most recent

arrivals who both bring something

different to the group and add

qualities in different ways.

We now look to build on going

three games unbeaten and focus

on picking up a positive result in

the Carabao Cup this evening.

Due to the nature of the cup,

nothing is decided this evening,

so as ever, we will take each game

as they come, focus on showing

the best version of ourselves

tonight and then see where we

find ourselves after the first leg.

The City Ground is a special

place every time we play here,

but night games add that little bit

extra and playing under the lights

often makes for a great occasion.

What we need to recognise is

that reaching the semi-finals

of a cup competition and

games like these don’t come

around too often, so we have to

embrace it and we are all really

looking forward to tonight.

We have all worked hard to get

to this stage of the competition,

but that is in the past and we

must only look forward as we

come up against a world-class

side in Manchester United this

evening. We are all aware of

their quality, but as ever we

will focus on ourselves and

focus on how we can have a

positive impact on the game.

I know you will all help make

tonight a special atmosphere. We

don’t take your amazing support

for granted and are continuously

looking to make you all proud.

Enjoy the game and thank

you for your support.

FREULER

FEELING AT

HOME ON

TRENTSIDE

Ahead of this evening’s semi final clash against Manchester United at

The City Ground, we caught up with the Switzerland international to

discuss life on Trentside so far…

The midfielder arrived from

Italy Serie A side Atalanta in

the summer following six-anda-half

seasons in Bergamo and

has so far made 18 appearances

in all competitions for The Reds

since making his debut against

Tottenham Hotspur at The City

Ground in August.

Speaking about his time in

English football so far, Freuler

says he’s enjoying the transition

to the Premier League.

“We had a lot of new players

at the beginning so naturally it

was going to take some time,

but now we see that we have

made such good progress and

hopefully we can keep moving

forward like this.

We have made

such good progress

and hopefully we

can keep moving

forward like this.

“The Premier League is different

to the leagues that I’ve played

in before, but I’m really enjoying

my time here, especially at home

because it’s amazing to play at

The City Ground. It’s always

been a dream to play in England

and now we want to keep

progressing together as a team.”

The 30-year-old midfielder

has started the last 14 Premier

League games in a row, as well

as featuring in three of the four

Carabao Cup fixtures so far

en route to tonight’s semi final

clash.

Following the recent arrival

of Danilo, as well as the

competition provided by

the likes of Orel Mangala,

Ryan Yates, Gustavo Scarpa,

#NFFC // 9

Cheikhou Kouyaté, Lewis O’Brien

and Jack Colback in central

midfield areas, Freuler says the

competition for places will help

bring out the best in the team,

both individually and collectively.

“The competition for places is

good and it’s important. It will be

the same for any top team. They

are all good guys and I enjoy

playing with them. We know

we have to always give 100%

because you want to improve

and keep your place in the team.

We have good competition at the

moment, and we all want to get

better every day.

“I’m enjoying being with the team

and living here in Nottingham,

it’s totally different to Italy but

I’m feeling settled and at home,

the city is good and me and my

family have managed to go to

some nice places.”

We know we have

to always give 100%

because you want

to improve and keep

your place in the

team.

Freuler played a key role for his

nation during the FIFA World Cup

in Qatar this winter, starting all four

games and scoring the decisive

goal against Serbia in a 3-2 Group

G victory as Switzerland reached

the Round of 16.

Reflecting on the experience,

Freuler, who now has 53

international caps after making his

debut in 2017, says it was a dream

come true to represent his country

on the biggest stage.

“The World Cup was an amazing

experience, and it was a big

moment for me and my family. I

enjoyed playing and representing

my country because it was a

dream to play at that level with

Switzerland and something I

have worked very hard for. It

was beautiful to score in such an

important game against Serbia

and I will never forget that feeling.

10 // #NFFC

After returning from the winter

break, Freuler has started all

five league fixtures since the

Premier League resumed, and the

midfielder admits he thrives off

the atmosphere created by the

Forest supporters, particularly at

home on Trentside.

“Our fans are amazing; the

atmosphere is always really good

and I can feel their appreciation.

Sometimes it can be difficult to

see the work the midfielders put

in because we don’t always score

the goals or get the assists, but

football is a team sport and I really

feel that the fans appreciate the

work we do and what we can

bring to the team.”

Looking ahead to the rest of the

campaign, the midfielder feels as

corner over recent months, and

says he enjoys being one of the

more experienced players in the

team as The Reds continue to

develop to life in the top-tier.

“I really like to the help young

players and it’s always enjoyable

to see them come into the team

and do well. We can already see

that in our team we have young

players who are making good

progress and putting in good

performances so hopefully that

can continue.

“We want to finish as high as we

can in the table, we’re in a position

where we still have to be mindful

of where we are, but we’ll keep

going and following our process.

We feel we’re moving in the right

direction and we’re looking like a

strong team on the pitch now.”

Following the Carabao Cup

quarter final shootout victory

against Wolves, Forest returned

to Premier League action as The

Reds hosted Brendan Rodgers’

Leicester City on Trentside.

Steve Cooper made one change

from the win against the Molineux

side, with Scott McKenna replacing

Willy Boly.

Forest started in energetic fashion

and saw the majority of the ball

during the opening stages. The

first chance of the afternoon fell to

Ryan Yates when he leapt above

Wout Faes to meet Remo Freuler’s

in-swinging cross, but his header

flashed wide of the post.

14 // #NFFC

Yates saw himself in the thick of the

action once more when Freuler’s

interception cut through the middle

of The Foxes’ defence, but he

dragged his shot wide of Danny

Ward’s goal from outside the area.

Leicester created a chance of their

own when an unmarked Harvey

Barnes met the cross of Marc

Albrighton, but he skewed his

chance wide of the goal.

After Leicester asserted a period of

pressure, The Reds grew into the

game and the atmosphere lifted

around The City Ground, although

the score-line remained even as the

half-time whistle blew.

Forest made the first change of

the match at half time when Jack

Colback was introduced in place of

Ryan Yates.

and enjoyed a spell of dominance.

Brennan Johnson’s neat ball across

the six-yard box was unable to

the attacking midfielder crafted a

chance of his own after weaving

through the Leicester backline but

he was unable to get a strike on

The deadline was broken moments

later, when Gibbs-White’s ball

unlocked the Leicester defence

and was met by the surging run of

Johnson, who rounded Ward and

stroked the ball into the net. After

Backed by another superb

combined to set up Morgan

six minutes, however his first-time

strike was brilliantly saved by Neto

The hosts registered their first

opportunity three minutes later,

Jordan Zemura's low ball into the

area almost found its way through

the crowd of bodies before falling

just wide of Hennessey's left-hand

post.

Forest looked to have taken the

lead on the 15 minute mark after

Ryan Yates stooped to head

home after being found by Boly,

however after a VAR check the

Ivorian defender was adjudged to

be offside after heading Gibbs-

White's free-kick back into the

path of Yates.

to put the hosts ahead on 25

by Anthony's accurate delivery.

However, three minutes later The

Cherries took the lead through the

dangerous Anthony. The winger

was found by Dango Ouattara

before finishing with a neat low

finish past Hennessey into the

bottom corner.

Yates went close just after the halfan-hour

mark as Forest looked for

a response, seeing a header from

close range well blocked by Kelly

before Hennessey and Worrall

combined moments later to

prevent the hosts adding a second

on the counter.

Moments before the break, Yates

was forced off and replaced by

Danilo, the Brazilian midfielder on

for his Forest debut after arriving

from Palmeiras last week.

The hosts started quickly after

the break, with Renan Lodi having

to be alert at the back-post to

turn Ryan Christie's dangerous

cross behind for a corner after the

Scotland international exchanged

passes with Zemura.

As The Reds looking for a response

in the second half, Cooper

introduced Gustavo Scarpa on

the hour-mark to replace Orel

Mangala.

With 15 minutes remaining,

Cooper further shuffled his pack

by introducing Neco Williams,

Scott McKenna and Sam Surridge

in place of Boly, Aurier and Wood.

Returning to face his former club,

it was substitute Surridge who

managed to get Forest back on

level terms as he slid the ball home

from close range after being found

by Brennan Johnson's low cross.

Following another VAR check,

Surridge was ruled onside to tie

the score with just four minutes of

normal time remaining.

Forest stood firm in four minutes

of additional time, Anthony seeing

a free-kick from 20 yards strongly

blocked by the wall before referee

Anthony Madley brought the game

to a close, a result which keeps

The Reds 13th in the table.

WELCOME

TO FOREST,

DANILO!

Nottingham Forest were delighted to recently announce the signing

of midfielder Danilo from Palmeiras.

The Brazilian has signed a

six-and a-half-year deal which

commits him to the Club until

the summer of 2029.

The Reds beat a lot of European

competition to secure the

signature of the 21-year-old old,

widely considered one of the

best young talents in Brazil.

Danilo, 21, came through the

youth ranks at Palmeiras before

making 141 appearances in all

competitions for the 11-time

Brazilian champions.

During his time with Palmeiras,

the versatile midfielder won

two Copa Libertadores - the

highest level of competition in

South American club football.

He was also named in the Team

22 // #NFFC

of the Year as Palmeiras won the

Campeonato Paulista as well as

the Brazilian Série A title in 2022.

Danilo will wear the shirt number

28 during his time on Trentside

and made his Premier League

debut against Bournemouth on

Satursday as The Reds earned a

draw on the South Coast.

After completing his move to

The City Ground, Danilo said:

“I’m really happy to be fulfilling

my dream of playing in the

Premier League and playing for

Nottingham Forest.

“I learnt a bit about the history

of the Club and saw they had

won two European Cups. I spoke

to Gustavo Scarpa as well, and

he told me that Nottingham is

a great city and Forest have a

quality squad with really good

staff.”

“I will show a lot of

determination and a strong

desire to win and will always

look to do my best on the pitch

to achieve positive results.

“I’m excited about getting

started and meeting my new

teammates.”

Sporting Director, Filippo Giraldi,

added: “We are really happy to

welcome Danilo to our Club and

to our city.

“He is a fantastic talent that will

be a great asset for the present

and the future of Nottingham

Forest.”

Welcome to The City Ground...

CHRIS WOOD!

Nottingham Forest were also delighted to announce the signing of

Chris Wood from Newcastle United on Friday.

The striker joins on loan for

the remainder of the season

with a conditional obligation to

become a permanent deal until

the summer of 2024.

He will wear the number 39 shirt

during his time on Trentside and

made his first Forest start on

Saturday.

Chris Wood said: “It’s a great

feeling and I am very thankful to

be here.

Nottingham Forest is a massive

club which I have come up

against a number of times, but

it’s nice now to be able to pull

on the red shirt and fight for the

club.

“You can see the transition

over the past 18 months and it’s

progressing in the right way. It’s

a project that’s going in the right

direction.

“It’s a club looking up rather than

anything else, it’s going to take a

lot of hard work, but it’s a squad

that’s pulling together.

“I’ve been in this league a long

time, so hopefully I’ll bring a lot

of experience to try and help

the younger lads out and bring

everybody together.

“As a visiting player, it’s always

been a hostile atmosphere at The

City Ground. The crowd are loud

and strong, so I’m thankful to

have that passionate fanbase on

my side now and I can’t wait to

get playing there.”

Sporting Director Filippo Giraldi

added: “Chris is a player who has

great character and experience,

having played 189 games and

scored 54 goals in the Premier

League.

“He is hungry to join us, and

we are proud and ready to fight

together to reach our targets.”

Wood, 31, arrives at The City

Ground having hit double

figures in four consecutive

seasons during his time at

Burnley.

Born in Auckland, he made his

international debut for New

Zealand in 2009 and has since

scored 33 goals in 70 games for

his country.

Moving to England in 2008

having impressed on trial

at West Bromwich Albion,

Wood enjoyed loan spells with

Barnsley, Brighton, Birmingham

City, Bristol City and Millwall

before joining Leicester City on a

permanent deal in January 2013.

Helping the Foxes win promotion

from the Championship in

2013/14, Wood then joined Leeds

United in the summer of 2015,

going on to score 44 goals in 88

appearances during a two-year

spell at Elland Road.

The 6-foot-3 striker joined

Burnley for a then-club-record

fee in August 2017, scoring 49

goals in 144 Premier League

appearances for the Clarets

during a four-and-a-half year

spell at Turf Moor.

Moving to St. James' Park in

January, Wood was an integral

figure for Newcastle in the

second half of last season as the

Magpies avoided relegation from

the Premier League, and departs

having made 39 appearances for

the club.

LYNDSEY

HARKIN: CAPTAIN

REACHES 250

APPEARANCES

FOR FOREST

WOMEN

Forest Women captain Lyndsey Harkin marked

her 250th appearance for The Reds with a

dominant win over AFC Fylde.

Nottingham-born Harkin signed

for her hometown club in 1999,

aged 8, and made her senior

debut for The Reds in 2005 as a

14-year-old.

Lyndesy played a key role in

Forest’s promotion to England’s

top league – going the entire

season unbeaten.

The Reds’ captain would go to

represent England at Under-19

and Under-20 level including a

4-0 debut win against Belarus

and featuring at the U19 Euros

and U20 World Cup.

Harkin moved to Doncaster

Belles in 2010, competing in the

Women’s Super League, before

re-joining Nottingham Forest in

2016.

Since her return to Forest,

Lyndsey won the FA WNL Plate

last season and remains a vital

member of Andy Cook’s side.

Harkin reflects on making 250

appearances for her hometown

club: “It was a proud moment

obviously, I’ve represented the

club for a long time and with

Forest being my hometown club

it’s really special especially for

my family who have put a lot of

miles in supporting me across

the country with Forest.”

“I was a baby when I first started

her, I was about 8 or 9, so things

have changed a lot; at the start I

was one of the younger players,

now I’m one of the oldest and

more of a leader.”

The Reds’ captain shared her

favourite moments so far in the

Garibaldi: “When we won the

league and got promoted to the

top league, that was a special

team; we went unbeaten that

season. Playing at that top level

26 // #NFFC

with Forest was special and it

was a good team to be a part of.”

“In recent times I’d probably say

winning the cup last year, it was

the first piece of silverware that

we had won in a while so that

was a special occasion for us.”

“Anytime we play at The City

Ground is incredible, I had the

chance to play against Jamaica

there and that was the first time

I had played at The City Ground.

That was amazing, especially

as quite a few fans came out to

support us.”

Andy Cook shared his thoughts

on Harkin’s career at Forest: “To

reach 250 games is a fantastic

achievement. Lyndsey is a player

who’s been central to how we’ve

tried to play since I joined.

“She will look back on these

games with great fondness I have

no doubt. I would be shocked

if she’s thinking about anything

other than the next game ahead

of her.”

“She has been the captain since

2019 and has always played in

the way that we want with the

courage, energy and attitude you

need to play 250 games at the

level she has.

“I have no doubt she’ll break 300

appearances and many more

after this!”

Erik ten Hag will likely

keep faith with him.

Heaton’s career has

gone full circle, with the

goalkeeper starting his

career as a youngster in

the United academy. Now,

36, he’s back at United

following spells with

Burnley, Cardiff, Bristol

City and Aston Villa. His

best spell came at Burnley

where he proved a real

stalwart, making 200

appearances and helping

them win promotion to

the Premier League.

United’s very own World

Cup winner, Martinez

scored for The Red

Devils during Sunday’s

3-2 defeat at Arsenal.

The Argentinean star

made 120 appearances

for Dutch champions

Ajax before getting the

call to join ten Hag at Old

Trafford. Martinez has

been a decent addition

to the United ranks and

he’s made 27 appearances

for the club this season.

His defining moment of

2022/23, however, came

in Qatar when he helped

his country lift the World

Cup as he made four

appearances throughout

the tournament.

Another Ten Hag signing,

Casemiro has looked

superb at United and

his form has offered

suggestions that Real

Madrid were crazy to

let him go. The Brazilian

midfielder oozes class and

he bossed the midfield

when United beat Forest

3-0 last month at Old

Trafford. Casemiro

enjoyed a superb time of

things at the Bernabeu,

making 336 appearances

for the club and winning

five Champions League

titles. Casemiro has also

made 69 appearances for

his country and was part

of the squad that lost in

the quarter-finals in Qatar

last year.

It’s not unrealistic to say

that right now, Rashford

is one of the most in-form

players in world football.

His goal against Arsenal at

the weekend took him to 17

for the season for United,

with nine of those coming

in the Premier League.

Rashford has emerged from

a tough period in his career

and now he’s starting to

prove those who dared

to doubt him completely

wrong. The player was

vastly underused by

England at the World Cup

and it’s clear that Ten Hag

has worked his magic on

the forward. Rashford has

scored four goals in three

Carabao Cup outings this

season.

THEY PLAYED

FOR BOTH

With Forest renewing acquaintances with Manchester United this evening we took a look

at half a dozen players who have turned out for both teams during their career.

JAMES GARNER

One of the best loan players to ever grace The City

Ground, with The Reds winning promotion during his

second temporary stint. Garner first checked in during

January 2021 and his form helped The Reds secure

their Championship status. Forest managed to get

him back from Manchester United for last season and

he became instrumental under Steve Cooper. In total

he scored eight goals and claimed 10 assists from 69

appearances at The City Ground and in the summer

United chose to sell him to Everton for £15 million.

PETER DAVENPORT

The talented forward played for Forest for four years in

the eighties. He made 118 appearances and scored 54

goals for the club and was a firm fan favourite. Following

his time at Forest he was snapped up by Manchester

United where he made 92 appearances and hit the

net 22 times. Davenport went onto enjoy a decent

playing career and also turned out for Middlesbrough,

Sunderland, St Johnstone and Stockport among others.

Davenport was also capped by England during his career

and made a single appearance for the Three Lions.

32 // #NFFC

GARRY BIRTLES

Brian Clough plucked the striker from non-league where

he’d been banging goals in at Long Eaton United. In 280

appearances across two spells for The Reds, he scored

96 goals and helped the club claim two European Cups

against the odds. His time at United wasn’t overly fruitful

and he scored 12 times during 64 appearances at Old

Trafford. Birtles was a fantastic player and fans of a certain

age might consider the former striker as one of the greatest

to ever play upfront for the club. These days Birtles can still

be found at The City Ground on a regular basis.

JONATHAN GREENING

The former midfielder came through the academy

ranks at Old Trafford and was on the bench as they

lifted the Champions League in 1999. He didn’t find

first-team football easy to come by at Old Trafford

and he moved to Middlesbrough on a permanent deal

in 2001. Greening signed for Forest at the other end

of his career, signing for the club in 2011 when Steve

McClaren took the managerial hotseat. He made

49 appearances for The Reds and slipped towards

retirement when he departed for the final time in

2014.

ANDY COLE

The striker was one of the most feared marksmen in

the Premier League during his prime. He spent six years

at Old Trafford, scoring 121 goals in 275 appearances,

initially signing for the club from Newcastle where

he’d caught the eye. A Nottingham-born player, it

seemed fitting that he ended his career at The City

Ground. Sadly, the dream turned into a nightmare and

he departed after failing to score in 11 outings for The

Reds. Cole also played for Fulham, Blackburn Rovers,

Manchester City, Portsmouth and Sunderland.

NEIL WEBB

Another player who produced the goods for Forest

but not Manchester United is the former midfield

player, Neil Webb. After signing for The Reds in 1985

from Portsmouth, Webb became a cult hero, scoring

34 goals in 146 appearances for the club. In 1989 he

secured a huge move to Old Trafford but found the net

just eight times in 75 appearances before returning to

Forest. During his second spell, he spent four years

at the club, featuring just 30 times, with injuries

hampering his case for first-team football. Webb was

also capped 26 times by England during his career.

OPPOSING VIEW

Tonight we take on Manchester United in the semi-final first leg of the Carabao Cup and

ahead of the clash we spoke with United in Focus editor Dan Coombs who gave us the

lowdown from Old Trafford.

FR: We know that Marcus

Rashford is in the form of his life

and Casemiro oozes class but

who else should Forest look out

for tonight?

UIF: The man to watch is

Christian Eriksen, who leads us

for assists this season ahead

of Bruno. On a free transfer he

has been terrific. I’m intrigued

to see what new loan signing

Wout Weghorst can offer and he

should make an impact over the

two legs. Antony still needs to

do more to justify his big fee but

you can’t take your eyes off him.

Alejandro Garnacho has been a

revelation this season too, who

Forest know about already from

the Youth Cup final. Keep an eye

on youngster Kobbie Mainoo,

who could make an appearance.

34 // #NFFC

FR: Erik ten Hag looks like

the first manager since SAF

departed to really hit the

ground running. What has he

done to make United better so

quickly?

UIF: Ten Hag has finally got

United playing as a team, rather

than individuals, and he is

improving players. While there

were flashes under Ole, the

difference with Ten Hag is that we

have the midfield quality to now

dictate games, and our defence

has been vastly improved. For the

first time in a while, it feels like

we have a proper coach, whose

first focus is work on the training

ground, and the players are fully

buying in. His transfers have

largely been a success too, which

helps. The way he dealt with

Ronaldo from start to finish has

commanded respect, no doubt

within the squad too.

FR: Finally, with the transfer

window still open, if a dream

signing could be made where

would you like to see it made?

UIF: Our main weakness at

present is up front, despite playing

well we haven’t scored enough

goals this season and Anthony

Martial’s fitness problems make

him too unreliable. Harry Kane is

getting linked for the summer, he’s

a proven option, Dusan Vlahovic

and Victor Osimhen are younger

alternatives. The problem is

permanent signings appear to be

on hold right now until after the

proposed takeover, which makes

sense. Ideally whoever buys us

would pay up to try and win over

Jude Bellingham, that would be

the midfield sorted for the next

decade.

HAVE WE MET?

With Forest set to take on Manchester United tonight, we took a trip

down memory lane and looked at our last five meetings.

27th December 2022

Manchester United 3

Nottingham Forest 0

Forest were beaten at Old Trafford

back in December in the first

game after the World Cup. Goals

from Marcus Rashford, Anthony

Martial and Fred secured a pretty

routine win for United, with Ryan

Yates seeing a goal disallowed

after a VAR check.

6th February 1999

Nottingham Forest 1

Manchester United 8

The Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Show!

The Norwegian striker only played

for 14 minutes of this clash and

left the field with four goals to his

name. Forest were second best

to United who won the treble that

season. Alan Rogers did equalise

for The Reds in the first half.

26th December 1998

Manchester United 3

Nottingham Forest 0

Forest were no match for the

Champions elect in this Old

Trafford clash. Ronny Johnsen

scored twice from set-pieces with

Ryan Giggs adding a third for the

Red Devils. United under Sir Alex

Ferguson massively had Forest’s

number and this was another

example of that being evident.

11th November 1998

Manchester United 2

Nottingham Forest 1

As if it wasn’t bad enough playing

United twice in the league, Forest

went and drew then in the fourth

round of the League Cup too.

So often the nemesis, Solskjaer

scored twice and Steve Stone

scored what proved to be a

consolation for The Reds.

26th December 1996

Nottingham Forest 0

Manchester United 4

A Boxing Day to forget for The

Reds who shipped four at home to

the Red Devils. On this occasion,

United passed the goals around.

David Beckham scored a freekick,

with Nicky Butt, Ole Gunnar

Solskjaer and Andy Cole also

getting onto the score-sheet.

36 // #NFFC

When Manchester United visited

us in the FA Cup four decades

ago the two teams were very

evenly matched. We were only

above them in eighth place

in Division One because we

had scored five goals more.

We both had 29 points from 26

games and had the same goal

difference, but, remarkably, United

had drawn no fewer than fifteen

times. They had only lost four

games (we had been beaten eight

times), so clearly their problem

was scoring the decisive goals to

turn tight games in their favour.

Fittingly, this cup tie turned out

to be a tale of two strikers – one

unaware he had scored the

winning goal, the other only too

aware he was not yet producing

the goals expected of him after a

big-money transfer.

Trevor Francis had made his

comeback the previous month,

having not played since May

because of the Achilles tendon

injury that had denied him a place

in the team that retained the

European Cup. Although he had

often been played in a right-sided

position in his Forest career to

date, Francis had worn the number

nine shirt since his return. He had

soon got back into the goalscoring

habit, with five goals already to

his name from six league and cup

games.

We were in a period of transition,

as the team that had won so much

silverware in the last three years

was starting to be broken up.

Among those to leave was Garry

Birtles, who had moved to Old

Trafford for a fee of £1.25 million in

October. By the time United came

to town Ian Bowyer had just left

for Sunderland and as some of the

established stars departed other

players were given an opportunity

to make their mark. Our team for

this 4th Round tie included squad

player Bryn Gunn, promising

youngster Colin Walsh and Swiss

newcomer Raimondo Ponte,

whereas Birtles – despite playing

a full part in two trophy-laden

seasons at Forest before his move

– was one of the least experienced

of United’s eleven.

REVIEW

Unfortunately, he had had a

difficult start to his United career.

However well he might have

played, as a striker he was judged

on his goal tally and he had not

got off the mark until his tenth

game, scoring the second goal

as United beat Brighton in a 3rd

Round replay. Birtles would have

been keen to mark his return to

Trentside with a goal against his

former team-mates, but sadly for

him the game was to reflect his

and Francis’s respective fortunes in

front of goal.

With Walsh calling the shots in

midfield with a maturity that belied

his years, we dominated the first

half, but we only had one goal to

show for our superiority. After 15

minutes, United keeper Gary Bailey

was slow to react when John

Robertson curled an in-swinging

corner towards the near post. He

hastily moved along his goal line

to challenge for the ball, but two

covering defenders impeded his

progress and he could not prevent

Francis from scoring from close

range. In the melee of bodies

Francis was not even sure whether

or not he had got a touch, but he

was happy enough to take credit

for the goal once his team-mates

started congratulating him.

United were better in the second

half, if somewhat flattered by

Brian Clough’s over-generous

post-match verdict that they had

deserved a replay. Their best

player was Steve Coppell, but,

when the imperious Kenny Burns

wasn’t dealing with the rightwinger’s

crosses, there was still

England keeper Peter Shilton to

beat. The closest United came

to scoring was when a Birtles

header was brilliantly turned

past the post for a corner by

his former team-mate mid-way

through the second half.

We eventually went out of the

FA Cup in a 6th Round replay at

Ipswich and finished the season

seventh in the table, one place

and two points ahead of United.

By September Francis had been

sold – prematurely in most fans’

eyes – to Manchester City. Birtles’

struggles continued throughout

the rest of that 1980-81 season,

but in the following campaign

he found the net more regularly,

finishing with a respectable 11

goals in 33 League games.

By the 1982-83 season he was

back at Forest – along with Ian

Bowyer – as Clough wanted a

couple of reliable, experienced

players to lead by example and

educate his exciting young team.

Back with his home-town club,

Birtles was once again prolific in

front of goal, but he also proved

as adept at preventing goals as

he had been at scoring them in

prolonged spells when Clough

played him at centre-half.

Forest: Shilton, Anderson, Gray, McGovern,

Burns, Gunn, Ponte, Wallace, Francis ,

Walsh, Robertson

United: Bailey, Nicholl, Albiston, Wilkins,

McQueen, Buchan, Coppell, Birtles, Jordan,

Macari, Thomas

Forest Review’s own Kit Man, Tom Ignatowicz, takes a look at the

kits used in our previous games against Manchester United.

ALL WHITE AWAY

Years before our own successes,

Manchester United were enjoying

their own heyday of top flight titles

and European memories. They

were one of a number of teams

who still had no logos whatsoever

on their kits with the simple red

shirts paired with white shorts

and red socks as opposed to their

usual black. Forest did have their

old City coat of arms emblem on

their all white away strips with the

shorts clash deemed not an issue.

United legend George Best is

pictured in a 3-0 Forest loss at Old

Trafford.

1980-81

SPONSORLESS FOR TV

The 1980-81 season saw us

retain our most famous kit for

a third season including the

commemorative “European Cup

Winners” text under our logo as

we celebrated retaining Europe’s

top prize. We had introduced our

first shirt sponsors Panasonic for

this season but perhaps against

the logic that would be assumed

today, sponsors were not allowed

when the game was on TV as was

the case here. Man United were

in white shirts with Adidas stripes

on the sides rather than sleeves,

a style that was brought back in

WEMBLEY

Our last appearance at the

old Wembley came against

today’s opponents in the same

competition being the 1992

League Cup final. Forest won

the toss for kits and wore this

classic Shipstones kit with writing

under the logo to commemorate

the occasion, something that

wouldn’t happen again until our

recent playoff victory at the new

Wembley. United fully embraced

the nineties with some wild away

kits, this being one of their first

which despite the odd use of two

different shades of blue did still

pleasingly include red trim. Forest’s

Brett Williams is pictured but

would end up empty handed as we

went on to lose 1-0.

recent years. Pictured is our own

1964-65 Gary Mills evading a tackle in a

1991-92

2-1 loss.

1995-96

PREMIER LEAGUE YEARS

As the Premier League began we

released a new home kit but did

retain this white away kit matched

with black shorts and socks in

a colour scheme perhaps more

familiar for tonight’s opponents.

The kits were updated, however,

for sponsor Labatts who were

used for every away game. Ian

Woan is pictured battling Paul

Ince who is sporting United’s

throwback style kit with laces

around the collar for a very old

fashioned look. Kits and teams

are often fully synonymous with

their sponsors, with Sharp and

Manchester United being a

famous mainstay of the nineties.

1992-93

UNLUCKY KITS

For the 1995-96 season Manchester

United released a gray away kit in

two shades with red trim throughout

and a separate area for their Sharp

sponsor. Infamously this kit was

worn at Southampton and changed

at half time as it was thought

to be unlucky with players also

complaining of poor visibility. It did

earn them a 1-1 draw here courtesy

of the pictured Eric Cantona’s

penalty canceling out a rare Paul

McGregor opener for Forest. Ian

Woan is pictured in our heavily black

trimmed home kit, a colour scheme

that we stuck with for one more

home kit after this before returning

to our traditional red and white.

LEAGUE CUP

The last time we met in the

League Cup was actually in our

last Premier League season in

1998/99. Although this kit was

originally meant to be a third kit, it

was actually used more often than

the white away in their two years

of use. The centralised style of the

logos was copied from the home

kit, with the kit featuring traditional

red and white trim throughout to

compliment the blue worn here

by Andy Gray. as far as famous

kits go, United’s here has gone

down in history due to it featuring

throughout their treble-winning

campaign. From a kit point of view

it also featured a rarely seen zip-up

collar with a full sleeve of Umbro

logos making it look slightly busy.

COLUMNIST

MARPLES’

MUSINGS

Dave Marples muses over The Reds’ journey to the last four…

We’ve been here before. It may

not seem like it to some of you,

but honestly, we have. This brave

new world of competing in cup

semi-finals is more ‘it’s been a

while’ than brand spanking new.

The road to this point was – like

all roads – characterised by

periods of plain sailing mixed with

the requirement to avoid some

rather large and scary potholes.

Navigating past Grimsby Town

was a pleasant drive to the

seaside with some football on

the beach accompanied by fish

and chips. Defeating Spurs was

like a visit to the Peak District

– seemingly daunting and

difficult to get to, but surprisingly

straight-forward and exceedingly

rewarding. The road up to and

past Blackburn was literally

difficult, dark and challenging, yet

metaphorically plain-sailing. And

then there was the turbulence

of the journey past Wolves,

as challenging as successfully

navigating through the West

Midlands on a Friday evening.

There were moments when the

traffic was backing up and it

felt like we were going to break

44 // #NFFC

down on the hard shoulder. Yet

we hung on in there, exercised

patience and resilience, and held

our nerve when approaching

the really tricky parts.

And we now face a task akin

to taking a ring across Mordor

and dumping it into the pits

of Mount Doom, about as

easy as driving in and out of

Manchester for an evening

game without getting lost or

encountering any road closures.

But that’s not to say such

a thing is impossible – just

a bit tricky, that’s all.

If we have learned anything

over the last 16 months, it is to

never put a ceiling on how good

things can get. When we climbed

out of the bottom three of the

Championship, perhaps that was

as good as we could hope for. It

wasn’t. When we made midtable

then – was that the ceiling

for that season? No. When we

REVIEW

‘O brave new world,

that has such people

in ‘t!’

made the play-offs – was that

as good as it could get? No.

When we reached the play-off

final, surely that was the best we

could hope for? Apparently not.

Ok then…chalking up our first

Premier League goal? Our first

Premier League win? Our first

away win? Could it get any

better? Well yes actually – beating

Liverpool was as good as many of

us would dare to dream about.

But still, here we are: competitive

in the Premier League and

competing in our first League

Cup semi-final since February

1992, when we vanquished

Tottenham Hotspur in the biblical

rain after a bomb scare and the

very definition of a bullet header

from Roy Keane. Our reward? A

final against none other than this

evening’s opponents, of course.

This is how football works – not in

mysterious ways, but in bizarrely

predictable serendipitous ways.

When Miranda utters the famous

words, ‘O brave new world, that

has such people in ‘t!’, she is in

awe of the people around her,

yet naively unaware that she is

surrounded by mostly conniving

and power-hungry royals, eager

to claim her island for themselves.

This brave new world in which we

find ourselves is no less dangerous

and daunting, but unlike Miranda,

we grow less naïve with every

passing experience. It’s a brave

and ever so slightly familiar world

– and one to be embraced.

IPSWICH 1 (4)

Morgan (26’)

FOREST 1 (2)

Osong (63’)

Forest U18s were in FA Youth

Cup action last week as The Reds

travelled to face Ipswich Town at

Portman Round.

With a place in the fifth round up

for grabs, Forest named a strong

side which included the dangerous

attacking duo of Esapa Osong and

Jack Nadin, while Kyle McAdam

wore the captains armband.

Goalkeeper Aaron Bott made

a strong stop to deny Oli Davis

as the hosts registered the first

opportunity on target after five

minutes, tipping his effort around

the post and behind for a corner.

Forest started to settle into the

tie as Joe Gardner embarked on

a strong run from deep inside

his own half, beating the Ipswich

midfield before looking to play in

Josh Powell but the hosts cleared

the danger.

Midway through the first half,

Powell delivered a dangerous

corner which was met by the head

of Jack Thompson but his effort fell

wide of the post as Forest looked

for the breakthrough.

However, just before the half an

hour mark, the hosts took the lead

through Rio Morgan. Bott made a

couple of smart saves in the buildup

before Justin Hanks cleared

a chance off the line, however

Morgan was primed and ready to

tuck home the loose ball.

The Reds looked to respond

moments later as George

Hemmings took aim with a leftfooted

strike but he couldn’t trouble

Woody Williamson in the Town net.

Forest added fresh legs for the

second period as midfielder Archie

Whitehall replaced Hemmings

during the interval.

Zach Abbott came close to forcing

an equaliser two minutes into the

second 45 following a corner but he

volleyed just wide of Williamson's

post.

Osong was then through on goal

under pressure from the defender

but saw his effort denied by

Williamson again, before appeals

for a shirt pull on the Forest number

9 inside the penalty area were

waved away.

On 66 minutes, Osong got the

goal he deserved to level the tie

after cutting inside from the left

and firing past Williamson from 20

yards.

With confidence up after scoring

the equaliser, Forest pushed for a

winner as Thompson struck wide

from Abbott's cross with just a few

minutes remaining.

With no breakthrough from either

side for the remainder of normal

time, the tie headed to extra time.

The score stayed level after the

additional 30 minutes, meaning

the fixture in East Anglia would be

determined by penalties.

The hosts converted their opening

three spot-kicks before Osong

missed for Forest, seeing his strike

well saved. Powell and McAdam

then scored their penalties,

meaning Rio Morgan had to step

up to convert the decisive penalty

to send Ipswich through, which he

coolly did from 12 yards.

The Reds will look for a response

next time out in the league as they

host Stoke City on Saturday.

Several of our out-on-loan players were in action for their respective teams across the

weekend. Here, Forest Review’s Matt Derrig takes a closer look at how they performed...

Goalkeeper Ethan Horvath

featured again for Luton Town as

the USA shot-stopper played the

full 90 minutes in The Hatters'

2-0 away victory against Wigan

Athletic. The 27-year-old has

now kept 10 clean sheets since

joining Luton in the summer and

his side are well placed in the

Championship sitting in 7th place,

just two points behind third having

played a game less.

The Hatters return home to

Rob Edwards' side host Grimsby

Town in the Emirates FA Cup.

Josh Bowler will have to await his

second home debut for Blackpool

after The Seasiders' Championship

clash against Huddersfield Town

was postponed due to a frozen

The Lancashire side parted

company with manager Michael

Appleton last week, with former

Sunderland and Wolves boss

Mick McCarthy taking over at

Bloomfield Road.

Blackpool are back in action this

weekend as they travel to St

Next up for The Royals is an

Emirates FA Cup clash againt

Manchester United at Old Trafford

One fixture against Lincoln City

was called off due to a frozen

pitch. Taylor will have hoped to

have featured for his new side

on Tuesday evening as Burton

welcomed Peterborough to the

Pirelli Stadium.

Will Swan's Mansfield Town

weren't in action either on

Saturday after their League Two

fixture against Northampton Town

was postponed due to a frozen

pitch.

Prior to the postponement, the

forward netted a behind-closeddoors

hattrick for Nigel Clough's

side in a friendly victory against

Barnsley. Defender Riley Harbottle

remains sidelined after picking up

an injury against Northampton on

Boxing Day.

Following the winter break,

Mohamed Dräger and FC Luzern

returned to Swiss Super League

action on Saturday as they

drew 2-2 against FC Zurich at

the Swissporarena. The Tunisia

international played 72 minutes as

The Luminaries took a 2-0 lead,

however two late goals from the

visitors saw the points shared

in central Switzerland. Next up

for Mario Frick's outfit is a clash

against Basel this weekend as sixth

face fifth.

After netting on his AFC Telford

United debut last weekend, Lewis

Salmon featured again for his new

side as he started in the midweek

1-1 draw against Kettering Town.

The young striker appeared for

70 minutes against The Poppies

before seeing Saturday's trip to

league leaders Kings Lynn Town

called off due to a frozen surface.

Telford, who are currently bottom

of the National League North

table, return home this weekend to

host Southport FC at New Bucks

Head.

SUNDAY 15TH JANUARY / KICK-OFF 2PM / KELLAMERGH PARK STADIUM / FA WOMEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE NORTH

AFC FYLDE 1

Hollinshead (44’)

FOREST WOMEN 12

O.G (2’), Mosby (14’, 55’, 59’), Domingo (16’), West (28’, 45’), Anderson (32’, 35’), Steggles (64’, 90’), Mitchell (90’)

Forest Women made history

earlier this month following a

12-1 victory against AFC Fylde at

Kellamergh Park – a result which

is The Reds’ biggest ever league

win.

Andy Cook made one change to

the starting line-up following the

FA Cup defeat against Sheffield

United as Charlotte Steggles

replaced Arryana Daniels for The

Reds’ first league game since

November 2022.

Forest got off to the perfect start

just two minutes in when Hayley

James’ cross was bundled into the

back of the net by an opposition

player.

The Reds continued to push after

their opener as Greengrass fired

a low shot against the near post

before Mosby doubled Forest’s

advantage by tapping in the

rebound from close range.

After doubling their lead in the

14th minute, Domingo added a

third only two minutes later with

a composed finish from inside the

box.

West scored Forest’s fourth in

under 30 minutes with an excellent

header hitting the back of the net

from Harkin’s cross.

Becky Anderson netted a quickfire

52 // #NFFC

brace in the 32nd and 35th minute,

firstly scoring with a close-range

finish from Domingo’s dangerous

ball before slotting into the bottom

corner following a high press from

The Reds.

Fylde pulled one back in the

45th minute as a cross dropped

past goalkeeper Emily Batty and

into the back of the net.

However, Andy Cook’s side

immediately restored their six-goal

lead as West fired home a brilliant

effort from 30 yards out as The

Reds commanded a 7-1 lead at the

break.

Forest continued where they left

off in the opening 45 as Mosby

scored her second and Forest’s

eighth of the afternoon, calmly

firing home from 10 yards out.

Mosby completed her hat-trick

in the 59th minute when she

found the back of the net with an

excellent free kick.

Steggles then added a another on

63 minutes from 12 yards after a

foul on Mosby inside the box.

The Reds scored their 11th and

12th of the game late on through

substitute Gianna Mitchell and

a second penalty converted by

Steggles to hand Forest top spot in

the FA Women’s National League

Table.

Speaking after the victory, Head

Coach Cook said: “The result was

fantastic. To score 12 goals in any

game is brilliant and there were so

many good performances across

the team.

“We really wanted to perform as a

team, and we set the tone after the

opening 15 minutes and pushed

on from there. You can’t ask much

more of the players after putting

in a performance like that and now

we want to continue building and

moving forward because we’ve got

important games coming up.”

SUNDAY 22ND JANUARY / KICK-OFF 2PM / HALBROOKE STADIUM / VITALITY WOMEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE CUP QUARTER FINAL

FOREST WOMEN 2

Steggles (33’), Mitchell (80’)

BURNLEY 1

Aherne (84’)

Forest Women have progressed

through to the League Cup semi

final after defeating Burnley at

Halbrooke Stadium on Sunday.

Andy Cook made three changes to

the side that secured a dominant

victory over AFC Fylde last

weekend, with Aja Aguirre and

Naomi Powell replacing Emily

Batty and Amy West. Meanwhile,

Arryana Daniels returned to the

starting line-up in place of the

injured Georgia Hewitt.

The quarter final against Burnley

was set to take place in Lancashire,

however the fixture was reversed

on Friday resulting in The Reds

playing their first game at

Halbrooke Stadium since October

2022.

Forest got the better of the

opening 15 minutes with Steggles

and Mosby both having chances

from long range, although the

best opportunity fell to Charlotte

Greengrass whose header from

Sophie Domingo’s cross was

deflected wide.

The Reds continued their search

for the opening goal with Yasmin

Mosby creating a brilliant chance

for herself – the shot going just

wide of the far post.

Forest were rewarded for their

constant pressure in the 32nd

minute when Daniels was fouled

inside the box and a penalty was

awarded.

Charlotte Steggles made no

mistake from 12 yards, calmly

slotting home into the bottom left

corner.

With five minutes of the first half

remaining, Greengrass had a

brilliant effort well-blocked by an

opposition player, as The Reds

headed into the break ahead.

Forest started the second half with

the same energy as the opening

45 with Steggles firing wide from

distance and Greengrass having an

excellent volley saved.

Mosby’s effort in the 66th minute

narrowly missed the Burnley goal,

as The Clarets followed up with a

good chance of their own minutes

later.

Head Coach Cook looked to

freshen his side up with three

substitutions on 75 minutes:

Gianna Mitchell and Niamh

Reynolds replaced Domingo and

Mosby, while Laura-Jayne O’Neill

made her long-awaited return to

first team action replacing Naomi

Powell.

Mitchell made an instant impact

off the bench with her fourth goal

of the season, slotting home after

an excellent assist from Hayley

James, topping off a brilliant

Forest counter-attack.

Another of the substitutes, Mai

Moncaster, looked to increase The

Reds’ lead on 83 minutes firing in a

dangerous shot which hit the bar.

Burnley halved the deficit with

six minutes remaining as Alyssa

Aherne scoring for The Clarets.

88 minutes into the cup tie and

Cook introduced striker Rosetta

Taylor for Charlotte Greengrass as

his side looked to hold onto their

one-goal lead.

Late into added time, Burnley were

awarded a free kick in a dangerous

position which was dealt with well

by the Forest defence as The Reds’

held on to book their place in the

final four.

UNHCR is the world’s leading organisation

dedicated to supporting people fleeing the

horrors of war and persecution. Across the world,

UNHCR teams are on the ground in over 130

countries, providing:

Help - lifesaving humanitarian aid and

assistance such as emergency shelter, food,

water and protection.

Hope - enables refugees to access education,

healthcare and livelihoods restoring their selfreliance

and dignity.

Home - supports refugees to return home in

safety – just as they’ve always dreamed of.

Right now, many refugee families across the

world are facing a threat as dangerous as the

one that forced them to flee their homes – the

freezing winter weather.

Thousands of displaced families are living in bomb

damaged, unheated buildings or makeshift shelters

that can collapse under the weight of snow. With

winter setting in, they face a battle to survive.

As temperatures drop, the support of Nottingham

Forest FC and its supporters is especially critical.

The economic ripple effect of the Ukraine conflict

has seen huge hikes in fuel and food prices in places

like Afghanistan, Syria and their neighbouring

countries – leaving families cold and hungry.

UNHCR teams are in a race against time to deliver

blankets, clothes & fuel to refugee families, but

resources are at breaking point.
