URBAN
PUBLIC SPACES
A great city is the one with a unique identity and a variety of scenarios
and routes for walking, shopping, working and meeting people — no
matter the climate. Having designed more than 50 city squares, parks,
embankments and streets, we are experts in gentle interventions in
the city fabric that make a difference to the quality of life

RECLAIMING THE CENTER
For more than 100 years Kazan embankment — the
most central embankment of Tula, adjacent to the
wall of the medieval fortress (Tula Kremlin) — was
closed to the public, as it belonged to the armory
plant. For decades surrounding streets were
degrading, with beautiful 18 and 19 century
mansions used as communal tenements
MUSEUM QUARTER
The renovated area houses the Museum Quarter
that includes several museums, stores, hotels,
restaurants, food trucks, cafés and kiosks
PEDESTRIAN FRIENDLY
Metallistov street (historic name Pyatnitskaya,
“Good Friday street”) has been pedestrianized
after thorough traffic modeling. As a result, it is
now a bustling tourist street, as well as all the
neighboring cul-de-sacs

NEW LIFE FOR THE RIVER
The riverbed has been reinforced and the relief
corrected, consistent with the sustainability
approach. The old river bed was cleaned and
straightened by removing about 70 tonnes of
debris. It is now filled with clean water, its level is
monitored by hydraulic structures
EXTENSIVE RESEARCH
The design was preceded by extensive research
and analysis to optimize pedestrian and transport
connections, the zoning system, as well as possible
scenarios for the future development of the area

SEASIDE REACTIVATION
Dagestan is a mountainous Muslim region in
the Northern Caucasus area bordering the
Caspian sea. Traditionally the sea did not play
an important role in the local culture, hence the
seafront was largely underdeveloped
ECONOMY DRIVER
A project for comprehensive reconstruction
of the embankment along the Caspian
Sea in Derbent aims to fill this previously
underdeveloped area with life and make it one
of the drivers of the local economy
TOURIST BOOM
Recently Dagestan and Derbent, a historical
2500-year-old city, have experienced a tourist
boom. So the necessity of developing the Caspian
seafront has become evident
58 Central Promenade
FOUR FUNCTIONAL AREAS
The promenade, with a total area of 8.5 hectares, is divided
into recreational (400 m), tourist (250 m), museum (500 m) and
transit (250 m) areas and houses cafes, restaurants, beach
facilities, event and exhibition sites and much more

HISTORY AND TRADITION
The image of the embankment refers to the traditional
architecture of the magal (the oldest part of Derbent) and
the UNESCO-protected neighboring Naryn-Kala citadel
A THOUSAND COURTYARD
PROMENADE
We have based our concept of the Derbent seafront on
the uniqueness of Dagestan culture. Derbent’s social life
tradition, as in many traditional communities of the region,
is based on social interactions within small circles in semisecluded
spaces. So we called our idea A Thousand Courtyard
Promenade. It is based on the creation of a number of semiopen
spaces for outdoor recreation. The chamber-like
courtyards are protected from the active sun

A SHELTER FROM EXTREME COLD
Norilsk is a city with one of the most aggressive climates on
the planet. However, even in a place with an almost year-round
winter people need to get together, walk outdoors and live a
full life.
For such a challenging environment we came up with a series
of unique solutions that allow Norilsk residents to enjoy all the
functions of a public space in comfortable climatic conditions

FROM INFAMOUS
TO FAMOUS
Kapotnya is a densely populated working class area in the south-east of
Moscow. It was infamous for being close to an oil refinery plant causing
major pollution of air and water in the vicinity. After a 250-million-dollar
reconstruction the refinery is now producing much less damage to the
environment. However, much is left to be done to restore the ecological
balance of the area. One of the first steps was our project for regeneration of
the river bank in Kapotnya
UNIQUE WETLAND
ECOSYSTEM RESTORED
Following the sustainability concept of the project, the area was completely
regenerated, in particular the unique wetland ecosystem was restored and
a 2.5 ha floodplain area was cleaned

the local community

meters. The shape is inspired by a rare natural
phenomenon called 'ice flowers', which is a
unique feature of the area. The concept combines
elements of traditional Tatar culture with the
latest technology.

THREE HALLS
– The Great Hall, a solemn yet informal space;
– the transformable Universal Hall;
– the Eastern Hall, which gives a sense of coziness thanks
to the circular stage with an audience seated around it
EASTERN HALL
The multi-layered wall panels in the Eastern Hall are inspired
by traditional Tatar female jewelry: the khasite, the izu
breastplate, and the kalfak headdress covered in silver coins

entire structure

RESPECTING THE HERITAGE
The Stanislavsky Electrotheatre is an example of
the solution of an impossible task.
An old-fashioned theater (built in 1909 as
one of the first cinema halls in Russia) with
dilapidated technology and a messy backyard
was transformed into a modern theatrical venue.
In its eclectic design all the valuable historical
elements were carefully preserved and boldly
juxtaposed with ultra-modern technological
elements

REFURBISHMENT NEEDED
A 30,200-square-meter hotel on the Imeretinskaya embankment in Sochi,
built for the 2014 Winter Olympics, with more than 500 rooms. It was the
first hotel to be built in the greenfield. In a few years a number of highclass
hotels and resorts appeared around, and this building started to lose
competition. The owners felt that a refurbishment was needed together with
restructuring of all the hotel’s logistics
INTERIOR REDESIGN
The existing zoning and functional program of the complex,
much of which is used inefficiently, were redesigned

CASCADE OF TOWERS
The design is based on combining two
shapes — a cascade and a parallelepiped: seven
towers of different heights pressed tightly against
each other form the mass of the building.
CITY’S LANDMARK
The hotel's tallest tower is made of glass and
metal panels, making it visually lighter — during
the day it merges with its surroundings, and at
night it becomes the city's landmark
