WELCOME TO
THE MAG
Notts County v FC Halifax Town
Saturday 28 January 2023 — 3pm
Vanarama National League
Meadow Lane
— IT’S BEEN MORE than two months since we’ve hosted a
Saturday 3pm kick-off at Meadow Lane, so it’s great to break that
duck today – particularly following the recent disruption.
Luke Williams discusses the impact of postponements, as well
as the new deal he signed earlier this month, on page five.
To celebrate the good news, we take a look at some of the
best wins Williams has overseen on page 16, while Mick Chappell
brings us another Peek at the Past on 18.
Enjoy the game and the Mag – and we’ll see you back here for
the Valentine’s Day visit of Barnet!

HEAD COACH'S NOTES
LUKE WILLIAMS
We’re delighted to be back in action today after seeing our last two
matches postponed due to the cold weather...
— WHILE IT’S BEEN a hugely frustrating
period, I don’t think there’s a lot
anyone could have done to get either
the Chesterfield or Solihull game on.
Unfortunately, unless you have undersoil
heating it can be impossible to combat cold
temperatures.
Postponements make life very difficult
as they sabotage your training schedule.
Usually we work the players very hard early
in the week before reducing the workload
going into a game, but we’ve been unable
to follow this pattern recently due to
the disruption.
“WE SHOULD ALL BE
PROUD OF THE WORK
WE’VE DONE SO FAR, BUT
I FEEL IT’S IMPORTANT TO
STRESS THAT WE’RE ONLY
SIX MONTHS INTO OUR
JOURNEY TOGETHER AND
I KNOW THAT WE’RE ONLY
GOING TO GET STRONGER”
That said, there are many other teams in
the same situation as us – including today’s
opposition who have had their fair share of
postponements this season.
We’ve been clear to the players that they
can either react well or badly to what’s
happened, and that they have to be strong
enough to deal with the adversity. Their
reaction has been brilliant and now we
have to see a response in today’s game –
we need showtime again.
On a separate note, I’d like to take this
opportunity to thank our owners, Chris
and Alex Reedtz, for putting their faith
in me and Ryan Harley by offering us
new contracts.
As a manager or head coach, it can be
incredibly difficult to find a club that closely
matches your own philosophy and values
and I feel very fortunate to have found that
here, particularly so early in my career.
We should all be proud of the work
we’ve done so far, but I feel it’s important
to stress that we’re only six months into our
journey together and I know that we’re only
going to get stronger.
The foundations Chris and Alex have
laid for this club are phenomenal and I’m
honoured to be the person they want
to lead the team at this very important
juncture in the club’s history.
It would mean the world to me to
be part of the collective effort to
take Notts back into the EFL – and
the prospect of what we could
go on to achieve from there is
incredibly exciting.
For now, though, as clichéd as
it sounds, our focus has to be on
the next match and helping the
players maintain the superb levels
they have consistently produced so far
this season.

NICKNAME:
The Shaymen
MANAGER:
Chris Millington
OPPOSITION PROFILE
fc halifax
town
An FC Halifax Town side accustomed to battling for promotion in recent seasons
arrive at Meadow Lane today occupying a mid-table position in the National League...
— CHRIS MILLINGTON’S
team were scheduled to
entertain relegation-threatened
Scunthorpe United on
Wednesday, but after last
weekend’s home game against
Wealdstone was called off due
to a frozen pitch, they found
themselves in 15th place, well
clear of the relegation zone but
six points outside the play-offs.
A disappointing festive season,
when they picked up just one
point from their double header
with Altrincham, was followed
by a 1-0 defeat at relegationthreatened
Torquay United,
leaving manager Millington to
reflect: “It was a horrible game -
horrible weather, horrible pitch,
just a horrible day at the office.
“They coped with the
conditions much better than we
did and deserved the victory.”
The Shaymen have struggled
to pick up points on the road
this season, with their last away
win in the league coming against
Meadow Park
STADIUM:
The Shay
Solihull Moors in November. It’s
a fact not lost on Millington, who
said: “We’ve been on the wrong
end of too many 1-0s in what
have been nothing games.
“We’ve had it at Yeovil and at
Eastleigh, games where you just
make sure you don’t lose, but
we’re coming away on the wrong
end of a 1-0 defeat. If we do a
bit more we come away with at
least a point. It’s something we
need to fix.”
Torquay’s winner came when
Halifax failed to deal with a
corner, and Millington said: “We
didn’t clear the first ball well
enough and when the second
ball happens they are first to it.
It wasn’t just that moment, there
were too many times when we
were second best.”
Millington will hope those
defensive frailties will be
addressed following the
recent arrival of Adam Senior
on a month-long loan from
Bolton Wanderers.

2021-22 FINISH:
4th – National League
The defender came through
the Trotters’ ranks and has made
seven appearances for them. This
is his latest loan after spells at
Ashton United, York City, Chorley
and Telford United.
In August’s reverse fixture at
the Shay, we emerged 4-1 victors
thanks to a superb attacking
display from front pair Cedwyn
Scott and Macaulay Langstaff,
along with an impressive
substitute appearance from
Kairo Mitchell.
The former Gateshead duo
came to life at the end of a quiet
first half, Langstaff finishing at the
back post before Scott headed
home just before the break.
And they combined in the
second half before Langstaff
rounded the keeper to score his
second and secure the points.
Harvey Gilmour gave the home
fans something to celebrate with
a late volley but we had the final
say as Mitchell pounced on an
error to complete the scoring.

LATEST FROM NOTTINGHAM PADEL CENTRE
Having offered free play to all since the facility opened in November,
prices from the beginning of February have been set at levels to
reflect the continuing uncertain weather conditions.
One-hour court hire will be £12 during off-peak hours, rising to £18
for more popular times.
Interest levels since the opening last November have been hugely
encouraging with more than 400 people making bookings.
In recognition of the possibility that bad weather may dissuade
players from following through with their bookings, the free

Unused: Francis, Munakandafa.
A devastating attacking display from
front pair Cedwyn Scott and Macaulay
Langstaff, along with an excellent
substitute appearance from Kairo
Mitchell, fired us to victory in the reverse
fixture at the Shay.
The duo came to life at the end of a
quiet first half, Langstaff sliding in to finish
at the back post moments before Scott
flicked a header home.
And they combined in the second half to
allow Langstaff to round the keeper, score
his second and secure the points.
Harvey Gilmour’s late volley was only
ever to be a consolation as Mitchell
pounced on an error to add gloss to the
scoreline.

A LECTURE FROM
JIMMY SIRREL
In his new book Dennis Coath looks back on a
career spanning 45 years as a TV and radio sport
reporter based in Nottingham. He recounts many
hilarious and amazing experiences, including his
enjoyable encounters with Jimmy Sirrel…
— ‘Jimmy was an extraordinary
recruitment officer,’ writes Dennis.
‘He picked up a string of
bargain buys and developed star
material from the youth team.
Jimmy’s judgement of a player
was acute.
‘I recall there was a striker
with a Second Division club who
was attracting the top scouts
and linked with First Division
clubs, including Notts County.
I enquired if Jimmy fancied
signing the player, and he said
that he had watched him and
dismissed the lad, as he claimed
he was lacking in a bit of courage.
‘When I watched him, I realised
that Jimmy was spot on. The
player did not relish heavy
challenges and was not keen on
putting himself about. In oldfashioned
parlance, he was ‘a goal
hanger’.
‘I observed the player gradually
sank down the leagues; he scored
goals but never established a
place at a club.
‘Behind a bluff and tough
Glaswegian exterior, Jimmy was a
kind man who always found time
to chat.
‘One day he explained how
his four-two-four system worked
by utilising salt and pepper pots,
drink, and sauce bottles. They
were lined up like chess pieces on
his office table. There could have
been the tomato ketchup gambit
or checkmate with beer bottle
and salt cellar.
‘It was a brilliant analysis and
like getting an advanced lecture
on football tactics.’
Dennis’ book’s title comes from
the trials and tribulations he faced
including giant rats, paddling
through pigeon poo and eating a
mouldy pie...all in his duties as an
intrepid TV reporter.
Dennis recalls dodging a hail of
bricks in Istanbul and avoiding a
fusillade of full beer cans hurled
by French rugby fans. He faced
NOTTS COUNTY v FC HALIFAX TOWN
the militia’s machine guns in
Bilbao, was severely bitten by a
horse and terrified by lizards and
cobras in Vietnam.
He chronicles his interviews
with Muhammad Ali, Ayrton
Senna, Jonah Lomu and Rod
Stewart, among others.
Dennis has also published
books with England’s greatest
cricketer Ian Botham and
England’s most capped footballer
Peter Shilton and this latest
addition to his repertoire is
available at Waterstones, Amazon
and all good book shops for £8.99.

WILLIAMS'
BEST WINS...
SATURDAY 26 AUGUST 2022
NOTTS COUNTY 3
MAIDENHEAD0
The opening day of the 2022-23
season brought with it a wave
of intrigue and anticipation as
Williams took his place in the
dugout for his first competitive
match at Meadow Lane.
The pressure was on to get
the campaign off to a strong
start and he named a familiarlooking
XI, with only Aden
Baldwin, Sam Austin and
Macaulay Langstaff of the club’s
six summer signings going
straight into the line-up.
But any concerns over a were
quickly quashed as Langstaff
produced two fine finishes
before half-time.
The game was wrapped up
on the hour in sensational style
as Joel Taylor’s thunderbolt
threatened to secure our Goal of
the Season award in record time.
SATURDAY 3 SEPTEMBER 2022
DAGENHAM 0
NOTTS COUNTY 5
Langstaff didn’t have to wait
long for his first Notts treble,
though, as he put the Daggers
to the sword on a rampant day
in Essex.
Thriving once again in the
poacher’s role bestowed on
him by Williams, the Teessider
took his tally to nine in seven
games with our first, third and
fifth goals in a sensational team
display.
Eyebrows were raised when
Williams decided not to start
Geraldo Bajrami following his
brilliant midfield performance
in our victory over Solihull days
earlier.
But the incoming Jim
O’Brien’s excellent performance
fully justified the boss’
decision as we continued our
promising start.
TUESDAY 4 OCTOBER 2022
NOTTS COUNTY 1
WREXHAM0
Rarely had an October match
felt more significant before Phil
Parkinson’s side rolled into the
East Midlands for this midweek
match which attracted an
excellent crowd of 10,741.
Along with Chesterfield, we
and Wrexham had established
ourselves as the division’s early
pace-setters and, with two
points separating us from the
first-placed Dragons, it felt like
a significant night in what had
already become a tantalising
title race.
We burst out of the blocks
ferociously and were rewarded
with an early lead when an
ingenious set-piece led to
Langstaff notching his 15th
goal of the season. And, despite
losing the influential O’Brien
midway through the first half,
Williams was able to guide us
to a huge victory in a match we
edged, but which could have
gone either way.

Earlier this month we were delighted to announce that our head coach Luke Williams had signed a
new contract which commits him to the club until the end of the 2026-27 season.
It came as just reward for Williams, who has already led us to many memorable victories since his
arrival last summer. Here, we look back at some of the best…
TUESDAY 25 OCTOBER 2022
WEALDSTONE1
NOTTS COUNTY 6
Anyone who had written off
our chances of bettering the
Dagenham result on the road
was made to eat humble pie
on an incredible evening at
Grosvenor Vale.
Our hosts were left stunned
by a superb display of first-half
finishing, Langstaff setting the
tone inside two minutes with an
emphatic opener.
But it was Adam Chicksen
who grabbed the headlines with
two excellent goals which took
his season tally to five as he
continued to relish his role as an
attacking wing back in Williams’
free-flowing system.
Matt Palmer, and then Aaron
Nemane and Bajrami in the
second half, rounded off a
hugely memorable night as we
fired another warning shot to
our promotion rivals.
SATURDAY 12 NOVEMBER 2022
EASTLEIGH0
NOTTS COUNTY 2
Having been beaten without
scoring on all three of our
previous visits to the Silverlake
Stadium, this result felt like it had
added meaning – particularly as
the Spitfires came into the game
unbeaten at home.
Our performance oozed class
from start to finish but we had
to wait until the 56th minute
to nudge ourselves in front,
Chicksen scoring his seventh
goal of the season, meaning he
had equalled his career total for
goals in less than four months
under Williams’ guidance.
Ruben Rodrigues added
deserved gloss to the scoreline
when he rounded off a superb
team move.
NOTTS COUNTY v FC HALIFAX TOWN
SATURDAY 10 DECEMBER 2022
MAIDENHEAD3
NOTTS COUNTY 4
While Williams was
understandably unhappy to
have seen us relinquish our
3-1 half-time lead, the fact we
emerged victorious was seen
by many as a reflection of the
grit and determination he has
instilled in his team.
Having been in such a
dominant position, the prospect
of relinquishing three points
would have caused lesser sides
to crumble.
But Williams watched on as
his men produced a superb
winner out of nowhere,
Langstaff volleying home Kyle
Cameron’s excellent cross to
continue our relentless challenge
for end-of-season glory.

PEEKS AT THE PAST
Today’s guest writer is Geoff
Gibbs, who reminisces
about his seminal role
in founding the original
Notts County Ladies team.
Geoff started supporting
Notts in 1947 and he’s
subsequently been involved
with the Supporters’ Club,
the Patrons, the Centenary
Club, NCFPA and Lifeline.
He currently sponsors
Ruben Rodrigues’ shirt...
— NOTTS COUNTY LADIES
FC were founded during
the 1978-79 season, when a
group of ladies led by Tina
Godward wanted to form a
team to play friendly matches.
This was accomplished with
the help of Tina’s father, Bill,
and I. The team’s title was
agreed upon after consulting
Notts’ Chairman, Jack
Dunnett and Secretary, Neil
Hook and permission was
granted for the ‘1972 Black
and White Stripes’ to be used
as our registered kit.
A public address
announcement at a Notts
match stimulated sufficient
interest to raise a team and a
friendly fixture versus Hadden
Park was arranged. However
Memory Lane
Honorary Club Historian, Mick Chappell reflects on
times past with a little help from his friends...
this caused major problems
because playing against
registered league clubs or
non-registered Women’s
FA clubs was not allowed;
registering for both was the
only solution. Fortunately,
Birmingham City were in the
same situation so we initially
set up a friendly with them.
Our original players ranged
from schoolgirls to those in
their late 20s and early 30s, so
I organised suitable training
sessions on the Embankment
and at Wollaton Park until
a work colleague arranged
for Killisick Park at Arnold
to be used as our home
ground. Eventually we were
accepted into Division Two of
the Nottinghamshire Ladies’
League and I became the
club’s representative.
Predictably, when the
1978-79 season started
results went against us
but spirits stayed high and
performances improved so
much that Notts County
Ladies played a big part in
preserving the existence
of the Nottinghamshire
Ladies’ League after it
received a winding-up notice
from the WFA. After the
League Secretary resigned
I volunteered to succeed him
and responded positively
to WFA requirements at a
crucial meeting that ultimately
preserved the status of
our League.
Thereafter we achieved
our first League victory when
Selina McConville scored
in a 1-0 win over Lloyds
Ladies and a second victory
against County Canaries
eventually ensured that
we avoided bottom spot.
When Hucknall team, Byron
Rangers, disbanded two
of their best players joined
us and strengthened our
attack and defence so much
that we were invited to host

French club, Diablo Nantes,
for a friendly that resulted in
a 3-1 win.
During the close season we
recruited experienced players
who possessed the ability
and commitment to improve
our team. After training
throughout the summer we
sought permission from the
WFA to tour Germany and
play teams of a supposedly
similar standard during
August. Our first opponents
were Kobern Gondorf, who
were based in Koblenz on the
banks of the River Moselle.
Two days later we were
due to face Bad Neuenahr’s
third team, but after watching
us win our first match 4-1
they fielded their Deutscher
Meister team (Champions
of Germany 1978) for a
game played on a red shale
pitch. Unsurprisingly we lost
heavily and Sandy ‘Brian
Stubbs’ Bryant ended the
game with ‘shredded legs’ as
a consequence of the sliding
tackles that were her forte!
Ironically the ‘real’ Brian
Stubbs then asked if he could
train the ladies with me;
fitness, skills and camaraderie
soared before the new
season began with extremely
encouraging League results.
Ultimately we finished second
in Division Two on the same
points total as Lloyds Ladies
and earned promotion by
virtue of our better goal
difference. Nevertheless we
were disappointed to lose
the Second Division Cup
final against champions,
Doncaster Ladies.
At the 1980 Nottingham
Ladies AGM I resigned
as League Secretary and
Manager of Notts County
NOTTS COUNTY v FC HALIFAX TOWN
Ladies. However, a new
Second Division Cup
Competition was named after
me for ‘services rendered’ and
I was proud to present it to
my former team when they
became its first winners the
following season.
Some of the original Ladies
still live locally while others
have moved further afield,
but I’d like to thank each
and every one of them for
the effort, friendship and
commitment that made Notts
County Ladies such a highly
respected club.

OFFICIAL SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION
THE OSA COMMITTEE BRING US UP TO SPEED…
— AS OUR SUPPORTERS
ARE AWARE, the OSA have
continued to support local
homelessness charity the
Friary by providing clothes
for a number of years and
will continue to do so.
Please, therefore, keep your
unneeded clothing and
donations coming.
We can never receive
enough trainers, jeans,
hoodies or joggers, and
we would also love to
have unworn underwear,
deodorants, shower gels,
toothpaste, hand gel, shaving
gel, biscuits, crisps, chocolate
bars and cereal bars – all
essential items when you are
in the unfortunate position of
sleeping rough.
The OSA are also now
supporting St Mary the
Virgin and All Souls Church,
Highbury Road, Bulwell with
their food bank.
With the current economic
climate, a large number of
people are struggling to get
by and in this regard, at our
last Meeting, Loz Clough
asked the OSA Committee
if we’d support her with the
food bank. It was agreed by
the Committee that we could
help the two charities sideby-side,
with food donations
being distributed via St Mary’s
food bank.
They’re currently very
short of tinned potatoes, fruit
NOTTS COUNTY v FC HALIFAX TOWN
juices, instant mash, dried
milk powder and jam. These
products can be brought to
the OSA Office on matchdays.
Loz will be collecting for St
Mary’s and overseeing this
project and Patricia Akers will
continue to support the Friary.
Thank you in advance for
your support.
