WELCOME LETTER
They always say time
changes things, but you
actually have to
change them yourself.
-Andy Warhol
I have to admit, it stings a bit every time I watch one of those insurance
commercials with Dr. Rick. Yes, apparently, I am turning into my
parents. I leave my phone number twice when I leave a voice mail. I still
have a landline. I pack water and munchies when I go to the movies….I
could go on, but you get the point.
Well one more example…as I was researching mattresses for our
“Supporting Your Sleep” feature, I matter-of-factly told my coworker
how old my own mattress was. Her look conveyed a mix between shock
and disgust. But in my defense…I am sleeping perfectly well, mattresses
can be expensive, and on a green note, it’s one less thing going to the
dump.
Although those excuses could be covering up the root cause—I grew
up with parents who didn’t throw things away. Bath towels and dish
cloths hung around in drawers for decades. Our kitchen cabinets were
original to the home. Lamps were outfitted with 60-watt incandescent
bulbs and served as a source of light…not mood.
Whether the push is from Dr. Rick or the new year, it might just be
time to freshen up our homes with items that make us happy and more
comfortable. Is it time for that new mattress? A kitchen update? Need
help making sense of today’s confusing array of light bulbs? Or would
you like to tap in to your home’s unused space? Regardless of your goal,
this issue of Housetrends has it covered.
It’s a new year, and you’re a new generation. It’s time to celebrate
change.
Thanks for reading.
DISHING WITH
KitchenDesigners
Area experts share their favorite features
BY KAREN BRADNER
As editor of a magazine that has a heavy focus on kitchens, I often get asked by friends and
acquaintances who are prepping for a remodel what they should consider when planning and
designing their new space. I have my particular favorites: I like a floating shelf or two, I like one
wall with no upper cabinets, and I don’t like the microwave to be mounted over the range.
(This is based on my own experience—my microwave is, in fact, mounted over my range.)
But Housetrends has access to an incredible group of kitchen designers and I decided to take
that question to them asking: “What is one item, or concept, you’d want to include if you
were designing your own kitchen?”
Here are their answers…there are a few common threads definitely worth noting. ➻
housetrends idea book 2023 17

“For years we put desks in kitchens and they
became a catch all. A command center allows
you to charge cell phones, send a note, stack
mail and store coupons. You take care of a
task and close the door.”
—Vicki Waker, Cabinet Creations Inc.
“It is important to allow room for
multiple people to be in the kitchen and not feel
on top of each other. I always include a number
of “touch down areas,” open countertop space
for prepping, serving, and cooking supplies.”
bottom for oil/vinegars!”
“Opening up one wall to another
room allowed us to extend
usable counter space which we
desperately needed. The new
layout allows two or more people
to work independently. Light from
windows in the adjacent room now
filters into the kitchen.”
“I would do a butler’s pantry! A place for the
many kitchen appliances and gadgets we
accumulate to live, organized food items,
and countertop space to plug in crock pots,
toaster etc. that you don’t want seen in the
main kitchen.”
—Amber Bolin, Dave Fox Design | Build Remodelers Photo by CT Photo Memories
“I would incorporate modern “connected”
appliances, such as a refrigerator that allows
you to remotely monitor its contents, and
a range that allows you to pre-heat from an
app on your phone.”
“Hands-down a scullery. The main kitchen
can remain a pristine showpiece without
sacrificing functionality. With limited space,
a scullery can provide an extra sink, dishwasher,
beverage fridge, and cooking appliances
with the added benefit of pantry and
small appliance storage.”
—Allison Burt,
Haus Studio
“For me it’s drawers….as many as I can have.
Large, wide drawers hold pots, pans, bakeware,
casserole dishes, plastic containers,
linens—you name it! They take one motion
to open, and you can see everything. Full
extension is a must.”
“My kitchen must have would be lots of
drawers! They offer much more convenient
storage and accessibility rather than your
traditional shelving or pullouts. Large
drawers for pots and pans, smaller drawers
to organize silverware and other cooking
utensils.”
—Amber Ott-Johnson,
Kitchens By Design
“Without proper organization, all the pretty
doesn’t matter. Each of my cabinets has a
purpose. I have a place for pots, pans, ladles
and spices. Everything has its home and
that makes me happy every time I cook or
put things away.”
“I would include an island that functions
like a table. You could prep on one side and
sit on the other or switch. It would have to
have power at both ends and hidden storage
drawers.”
—Michael A. Wright, Kitchen Kraft
“Custom organization solutions keep your
kitchen feeling orderly and fresh for the
months and years following a renovation—
from a lift for your mixer to easy-access
drawers for pots, pans, and lids, and perfectly
divided drawers to keep counters free
of clutter.”
“Layers of lighting are critical.
Ceiling or recessed lights provide
general ambient lighting. Tape light
under upper cabinets provides task
lighting. Decorative lighting—
overhead pendants or sconces—
enhances style and creates focal
points. Tape light inside glass-front
cabinets and below lower cabinetry
adds drama.”
YOUR SLEEP
Making sense of today’s mattress options
BY LEE RHODES
“Going to the mattresses” is an expression that (for those who aren’t Godfather fans
and don’t already know) means to gear up for battle.
The thought of purchasing a new mattress may feel a bit like going to battle, what
with the plethora of options available today and the fact that–since we spend a third of
our lives sleeping–choosing the right mattress is a big decision. All the more reason to
view this purchase not with trepidation but with anticipation and even excitement–and
to get educated before you start to shop.
Mary Helen Rogers, VP of Marketing and Communications at the Better Sleep
Council, concurs. “We’re not here to tell you what to buy,” she says. “We recognize
that it’s a very personal process, so we’re here to make it more fun and less of a
grudge purchase.” ➻
housetrends idea book 2023 29

EVALUATE FIRST
With that in mind, it’s best to start by thinking not of when to buy a new
mattress but when to evaluate whether you need one. Rogers explains: “Ask
yourself, ‘How am I sleeping and how am I feeling when I wake up?’ If it’s good,
then you’re good to go.”
On the other hand, if you’ve recently gone on vacation and realized that you
sleep much better on vacation than at home, it may be time to replace your
mattress. Or, if you’re undergoing a lifestyle change, such as getting married, it
may also be time, as your existing mattress may not align with what your partner
needs. And if you’re experiencing a body change (think injury, pregnancy,
weight gain, weight loss, etc.), those are all triggers for you to evaluate whether
you need a new mattress.
COMFORT AND SUPPORT
While personal preference, size, firmness level, cost and more can influence
your mattress purchase, the top two factors to consider when shopping for a
new mattress are comfort and support. In other words, when you lie down in
your preferred sleeping position (i.e., back, stomach or side), you should feel
comfortable. Not only that, your head, neck and spine should be supported and
in proper alignment. Here’s a breakdown of some different mattress categories
relative to the kind of comfort and support they can provide.
TO SPRING OR NOT TO SPRING
Roberts explains that there are two “mega” categories of mattresses: those with
springs and those without. Historically, mattresses have contained springs, but
modern times call for modern mattresses. Springless mattresses are comprised
of foam or air; examples include latex and memory foam.
• Latex mattresses have a bouncy feeling (without the feeling of sinking) and
are known for their durability. Because they are harvested from rubber trees,
eco-conscious consumers favor them, though this also means they can be
more expensive.
• Memory foam mattresses are, for many, the heroes of the mattress world,
perhaps because they envelop sleepers like a hug, molding to the body and
evenly distributing weight. They allow people to sink into them for maximum
comfort and can even alleviate back or joint pain.
• Hybrid mattresses are just that: a mix of support springs and then a foam core
with varying levels of comfort at the top.
• Spring mattresses are certainly not obsolete. In fact, they provide support
and bounce in their own right, with the coils allowing for airflow and
ventilation. And spring mattresses often provide a cooler sleeping surface
than other mattresses (though many of today’s foam options also help
regulate temperature and wick away moisture). ➻
BASE-ICS
Your mattress is key to a transformative
sleep experience. But it doesn’t
act alone. It rests, of course, on a
base. Here are three basic types:
A box spring is a network of steel
coils framed in wood. They are the
base of choice for an innerspring mattress.
On the plus side, they tend to
be more lightweight than a platform,
and thanks to the springs, they have a
little bit of give. The springs, however,
may weaken over time.
Canopy: Vanguard
A foundation uses wooden slats
which are spaced two to three inches
apart—the closer together, the more
supportive. On the plus side, this
base is compatible with multiple mattress
types, it provides even support
and is fairly durable. However, this
base has no give and tends to be on
the heavier side.
Metal: Liberty Furniture
An adjustable base allows the
sleeper to move the mattress to
support the curvature of the spine.
Adjustable beds tend to cost more
and are considerably heavier—up to
three times the weight of a traditional
mattress, box spring, and frame combination.
SETTING THE STAGE FOR SLEEP
Along with the right mattress, you need an appropriate bed frame.
Platform beds are best for memory foam, latex, or hybrid mattresses.
A conventional frame is better suited to the thickness of a mattress
and box spring.
PRACTICAL SHOPPING TIPS
Rogers acknowledges that mattress
shopping can seem daunting because
there are a lot of choices. “I liken it
to shopping for a car,” she explains.
“The options seem infinite, so how do
you start? You say, ‘I like a small car, a
red car, etc.’ Start thinking about the
features that are important to you and
align with one that has your preferred
level of comfort and support.”
One of the best ways to start is with
a self-inventory of what you like and
don’t like. To help narrow down your
choices, The Better Sleep Council’s
website offers a “Better Bed Quizzz”
to help consumers evaluate their mattress
needs.
Consider factors such as whether
you sleep with a partner or alone. “If
the latter, go on your own mattress
journey,” says Rogers. “If you sleep with
a partner, you need to find something
that will work for both of you. If it’s
you, a partner and a pet, take that into
consideration.” Ultimately, choose a
mattress that gives everyone plenty of
room, including if you co-sleep with
your children.
Other factors? Think about what
features are important to you. “Smart”
mattresses offer everything from a
massage option to sound features
to sleep monitoring to adjustable
foundations. The latter allows you
to raise the head and the foot, and
it helps with snoring and even with
injuries.
Rogers encourages going to
multiple stores and testing out what
different mattresses feel like. It’s a
tactile product, after all. “There is
a lot of science and technology out
there that goes into today’s sleep
surface and if you haven’t shopped
for a while, it may be unfamiliar,” she
acknowledges.” So put on comfy pants
and head out to try some out.” ➻
housetrends idea book 2023 33

It’s also important to bring your own pillow or ask for a pillow so you can get an accurate feel of the
mattress as it relates to your head position.
Finally, in terms of cost, keep in mind that you may want to stretch your budget, if you can, because a good
mattress is a good investment—not just in your physical health but in terms of your mental and emotional
health as well. If you’re not sleeping well, you’re not going to feel well.
“I like to say, ‘By investing in your mattress, you’re investing directly in yourself,’” concludes Rogers.
WHAT SIZE TO SLEEP ON…
Your mattress needs to be a good match for your sleeping habits, but it also needs to be the right length for your
body and the right size for your room. Widths vary from just over 3 feet to 6 feet. Lengths vary from just over 6
feet to seven feet. And remember, getting some of these up staircases can be tricky.
Fun fact: The California king got its name from where it was invented—Los Angeles, California.
The creator of the mattress thought most Californians had houses big enough for a bed six feet wide and seven feet long.
HIDING UNDER
THE STAIRS
Clever ideas for creating more
usable space in your home
There are secrets lurking behind our walls and under our stairs.
Sometimes you’ll also find them hiding inside your furniture,
in the basement or even the garage. These secrets conceal
extra space that, if uncovered, could be used for
storage, studies, playtime, and more. Here are
some of our favorites that homeowners have
revealed. ➻
SPACE UNDER THE STAIRS
Untapped space lies beneath most any set of stairs. Built
in shelving, wine storage, a cozy reading nook, or a pintsized
playroom are just of few of the possibilities.
WORKING REMOTELY
While garage space isn’t hidden, it is
often ignored. Consider sectioning
off an area with drywall. Add portable
heat and AC and you have office
space, 2020-style. Use your remote to
open the doors when weather invites
you to work alfresco.
ASSIGN DOUBLE DUTY
If your home office needs to double
as a guest room on occasion, consider
installing a wall bed. Lift it up and
out of the way behind clever concealing
wiser.
DECK THE WALLS
Floating shelves are a great way to
add vertical space without sacrificing
floor space. It’s a win-win when you
use these to artfully display functional
items. And a television mounted
Queen or king-size beds conceal 33 or
Clear, low-profile storage containers
are an easy solution. But a bed
with a base of built-in drawers—even
better.
VANITY IS FAIR
If a pedestal sink is your style, never
mind. But if you opt to show your
ASK THE EXPERT
paver protection
WHY YOU
SHOULD
SEAL YOUR
PAVERS
How does sealing pavers protect them?
Most pavers are man made from cement
powder, aggregate and color pigmentation.
At the very surface of the paver, you’ll find
mostly smaller aggregate, cement powder
and color. This mixture of materials at the
surface is what gives a new paver a smooth
finish appearance. However, over time,
rain and traffic deteriorate the surface of
the paver removing the smaller aggregate,
cement powder and color exposing the
larger aggregate below the surface. Sealing
your pavers will dramatically reduce
surface deterioration.
Mark Rhodus - President of Perfect Paver Co.
What other benefits come with sealing
pavers? Pavers that have been sealed are
easier to keep clean since it’s more difficult
for dirt and debris to get lodged in the
pores of the paver.
Many of the paver sealers on the
market have natural oils added to them
to enhance the remaining color in pavers.
This is especially nice for older pavers
since it will make them appear newer.
Even newer pavers can fade soon after
installation, so they too can benefit from
this color enhancement.
Sealing your pavers will protect them
from salts applied to the pavers during the
winter. This is important if your pavers are
in the front of your home where shoes and
tires carry road salt on them.
line and Lee hired someone to repair their pavers.
quickly discovered not all paver repair companies are the same.
What about the joints between the
pavers? Most of the time, when a client
contacts us to seal their pavers, one of
their main concerns is the sand between
the joints. When sealing your pavers, it’s
the perfect time to also replace the sand
Mark started in the hardscape industry more than 22 years ago working for the very first concrete
paver contractor in the country. After spending several years working on large-scale commercial
and high-end residential paver projects, he and his wife Katie started Perfect Paver Co. to help
homeowners restore the beauty in their existing pavers.
between the pavers. We recommend
removing the existing sand and installing
polymeric sand. Polymeric sand is a mixture
of natural sand and plastic binders. Once
installed and activated with water, it sets
up hard like a grout. This makes it easier to
maintain and keep your pavers clean.
Should I seal new pavers? We strongly
suggest sealing new pavers after they’ve
been installed for 60-90 days. Just like
with sunblock for the skin, you don’t
want to wait until the damage is done to
apply the protection. New paver owners
are more educated than ever before, and
so we’re sealing substantially more new
paver installations.
BRIGHT IDEA
Getting back to lighting basics, one bulb at a time.
BY SYDNE SANTO
When lightbulbs were first invented, they were purely functional. They allowed
humanity to exist past sundown, opening entire worlds of possibility outside of only
candlelight.
Today, lightbulbs are still functional. They still allow us to lead lives at all hours of the
day, but now, these lights are also used as pieces of decoration; they can add beauty,
intrigue, and personality to any room. But before we can get to lighting design, we
must first cover the lighting basics, starting with the bulbs. ➻
housetrends idea book 2023 53
housetrends idea book 2023 53

WHAT TYPE OF BULB SHOULD I GET?
Picture a basic lightbulb. You know, the small one with the wires you
can see that you’re used to sticking in your table lamps. That’s an incandescent
lightbulb. Tried and true, it’s the base model of lightbulbs and
provides the gold standard of light.
The American Lighting Association (ALA) names three additional types of
lightbulbs to choose from:
Halogen incandescent
CFL (Compact fluorescent)
• Halogen incandescent – This bulb is very similar to the traditional
incandescent bulb, as it’s part of the same incandescent family, but is
more efficient than its traditional counterpart, using up to 30 percent
less energy.
• CFL (Compact Fluorescent) - The CFL bulb is more efficient still than
the halogen incandescent, using up to 75 percent less energy than the
traditional incandescent lightbulb, but its use is expected to decline due
to the growing popularity of LEDs.
• LED - Today, the LED bulb is the most efficient, longest lasting, and
often the most suitable type of bulb for home lighting. The new models
look very similar to traditional bulbs. These bulbs tend to have a slightly
higher upfront cost, given their energy efficiency, but that cost is mitigated
by their very long life.
Now that we can identify the different bulbs, we can continue with
other criteria to use in selecting the right bulb for you.
WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN A LIGHTBULB?
When you look at a box of lightbulbs, you will see a series of numbers
along the bottom. Believe it or not, all these numbers actually mean
something, and understanding them will greatly help you choose the right
bulb!
The next time you pick up a pack of lightbulbs, check the box for the
following:
• Lumens: How bright is the bulb?
• Color: Is the light from the bulb a warm 2700K or a cool 4000K?
• CRI: Does the bulb render colors beautifully? 80+ is good, 90+ is great!
• Dimmable: Can I use the bulb with a dimmer switch?
LED
WHAT’S A LUMEN?
Traditionally, lightbulbs were measured using wattage, which measures
the amount of energy a lightbulb uses. But this is not an entirely accurate
unit of measurement now, especially since bulbs take up less energy than
ever before. For example, an 80W lightbulb does not inherently mean
double the amount of light as a 40W lightbulb.
Instead, we should use lumen, which measures a bulb’s brightness. For
space lighting, anywhere from 450 to 1,600 lumens could do the trick, but
for cozy, reading lighting, you would probably look for less brightness, and
therefore, less lumens. It all depends on your space. ➻
housetrends idea book 2023 55

WHAT COLOR BULB IS BEST?
Light coloring is different than light brightness, as it measures the overall light appearance. Some lights
give off a warm light, while others have a cool, blue-white hue to them. Light coloring is measured in
Kelvins, and a bulb with a lower Kelvin, typically ranging from 2,000 to 3,000K will be warm, while the
bulbs with higher Kelvin, ranging from 4,000 to 5,000K, will be cool.
The best trick of all? See the bulb on and in-person before buying. That will give you the best idea of
what this bulb will look like in your space.
Chart courtesy of Philips
CRI: WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
CRI, or the Color Rendering Index, describes how many colors a light lets you see. This index is measured
on a scale of 0-100, with 0 meaning all colors look the same, and 100 meaning you can see the true colors
of an object.
The general rule of thumb is, the higher the CRI, the better the color rendering capacity of a bulb. Of
course, we want every bulb to score a 100, but try to aim for at least 80.
WHAT TYPE OF LIGHTING
SHOULD I LOOK FOR?
According to the ALA, the most
aesthetically pleasing and effective
way to light a room is to light with
three layers: overall, task and accent.
Overall lighting is the main light
source in a room. This is typically
the biggest, brightest light and tends
to be higher up in order to give off
the most light. This could include
a ceiling light, recessed lighting, or
multiple pendants.
Task lighting is the light needed for
specific tasks, like reading, cooking,
or applying make-up. Task lighting
tends to be more versatile in size, as it
only needs to be lighting for specific
tasks.
Accent lighting includes every
other type of lighting, like in-cabinet
lighting, cove lighting, or small,
portable lamps.
The best part about layered lighting
is that it could include any type of
lighting, depending on the space. The
most important thing is to layer the
lighting so that appropriate illumination
is available for the activity taking
place and can protect your eyes over
time.
LIGHTING FOR AGING EYES
Lighting becomes more and more
important as people age. The ALA
says that with each passing year,
people require more light to see
properly.
Terry McGowan, director of engineering
for the ALA, says, “older eyes
experience two important changes.”
The amount of light required to
sustain visual performance increases
with age. Research shows that a
60-year-old needs twice as much light
as a 30-year-old.
Over time, human eyes also become
more sensitive to glare. This can
seem a bit backwards, as adding more
light can often result in increased
glare on objects. That is what makes
the quality of light that much more
important as you grow older.
Just a few simple lighting adjustments
can make a huge difference
when lighting your home with age
considerations in mind:
• Turn on a table lamp or two while
watching TV to reduce the contrast
between your dark room and the
bright screen.
• Have a task light that can be aimed,
giving you direct light on the task
at hand.
• Use a floor lamp for versatile room
lighting. Aim to find a lamp that has
a light at the top, for full room lighting,
plus a separate light attached to
the side than be used as additional
task lighting.
Lighting is exciting! It can exist
in so many ways, from floor lamps,
to table lights, to even jaw-dropping
chandeliers. Now that you understand
the bulb basics, you can continue
crafting your perfect space, with
the right bulbs lighting your path
forward.
FRESH LOOK FOR
HUCK HOUSE
Columbus remodelers step up for area teens
PHOTOS BY KARLI MOORE PHOTOGRAPHY, LLC
In a typical year, over 500 youth experiencing some kind of challenge, take refuge in
Weinland Park’s Huckleberry House. As a crisis shelter, “Huck House” offers teens,
not just a place to sleep, but counseling and support to help them navigate through
these challenges.
Built in 1905, the building became home to Huck House in the 1970s and was
clearly showing its age. Walls needed painting and dirty, mismatched floor coverings
needed replaced.
“We don’t spend a lot of money on fixing up the space,” says Sonya Thesing, executive
director for Huckleberry House. “We spend money on programs and staff.” ➻
housetrends idea book 2023 61

MAKING THE CONNECTION
Upon learning of the shelter’s needs, members
of the Central Ohio chapter of the
National Association of the Remodeling
Industry (NARI) stepped up and selected
this project for its annual Community
Service Project. When a NARI team toured
the home, they saw in addition to paint
and flooring, the space could also be reconfigured
to function much more efficiently.
“By knocking down walls and getting rid
of hall closets and storage areas, we were
able to open up the space, give them more
of a central gathering area, as well as additional—and
better—bedroom space,” says
Todd Schmidt, chairman of NARI’s community
service committee.
Walls were reconfigured to allow for a study/lounge area leading into the
girls’ bedroom.
FRESH AND VIBRANT
Now, after several months of planning and
two months of construction, the second
floor is covered in luxury vinyl tile. Fresh
paint coats the walls and spaces have been
designed to better serve the needs of the
staff and residents.
“There’s a lot of joy and happiness in the
colors and paintings that were selected,”
Schmidt says. “It’s not a drab space.”
GAME CHANGER
“Teens are no longer laying on dirty carpet
in front of a desk talking to a therapist,”
Thesing says. And it’s far more comfortable
for a staff that needs to work 24/7. “It’s just
so warm and welcoming, she adds. “This is
life changing for Huck House to have this
space.”
The Huckleberry House crisis shelter is
one of four service categories offered by the
70-member staff of Huck House. For more
