FROM THE NOTEBOOK...

THE

GAFFER

Welcome to Deepdale for what promises to be

an exciting night of FA Cup action.

There’s obviously been a lot of

anticipation ahead of tonight’s

game since the draw was made,

with one of the Premier League’s top

clubs coming to town.

It’s a big game for the football club,

the fans, and everyone associated with

Preston North End really, and it’s one

we’re really looking forward to.

They’re obviously a good team with some

top quality players who were at the World

Cup playing for their national teams not

long ago.

On top of that, Antonio Conte is a top class

manager and we’ll massively respect him

and his side, like we do with any team

we face.

But what we’ll also do is have a right good

go tonight and that will be the message to

all the boys.

They’ve got to enjoy the occasion and try

to give a good account of themselves,

because we know the world will be

watching.

We know what the FA Cup is about, we

know there’s always upsets, so it would

“WHAT WE’LL DO

IS HAVE A RIGHT

GOOD GO TONIGHT

AND THAT WILL BE

THE MESSAGE TO

ALL THE BOYS.”

be great for us to give Tottenham a really

tough fight and let’s see where that might

take us.

We’re really looking forward to being in

a packed-out stadium with great noise no

doubt coming from both sets of fans.

Tonight will be a tough game, and there

will be spells where we’ll probably have

to work very hard out of possession,

so to have our fans right behind us will

hopefully spur us on.

Enjoy the game.

Ryan

Déjà Vu

This shot comes from the FA Cup fourth round on 17th

INTERVIEW

Cannon

Tom Cannon says PNE are looking to express themselves this evening

as they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup fourth round.

Not for the first time in recent years,

Premier League opposition will come to a

packed-out Deepdale looking to navigate

their way through a domestic cup competition.

North End have faced the likes of Arsenal,

Manchester City and Manchester United

in recent years, but tonight is the turn

of Antonio Conte’s Spurs outfit.

With the BBC One cameras in attendance,

too, it’s an opportunity for PNE to show the

country what they can do, and loanee Tom

says it’s a game they will be well up for.

He said: “Obviously, it’s a massive game

against a big club and it’ll be good to go out

there and express ourselves, I think.

“With the type of game it is, it’s

kind of all or nothing for us.

“We’ll put our all into the game and give

it our best shot and see what happens.

“I feel like if we can grab a goal early

on, or even just stay in the game until

the end and have a break, or even just

get that little bit of luck, it can go a

long way.

“Hopefully that happens and we

manage to pull off a result.”

On a personal level for Tom, less than three

months on from making his professional

debut, it’s a huge game to be taking part in.

It wasn’t long ago that he was playing youth

football with parent club Everton, so to be putting

himself up against some of Europe’s best this

evening is arguably his greatest challenge yet.

He said: “I’ve come on in the Premier League

against Bournemouth and Wolves, but this is

the top six in the Premier League we’re talking

about, so it would be a great game to play

in and hopefully I can grab a goal if I play.

“I’d always watch the FA Cup with my dad and my

brothers – and my mum and sister might join us

if they’re sat with us – but my dad would always

be telling me how big it was back in his day.

“Obviously, I know myself now by playing

football just how big the cup is, so it would be

good if we could put a little cup run together.”

It’s been a bright start to life at PNE for the

forward, who was thrown straight into the

starting XI for his debut just a few days after

joining on loan until the end of the season.

20 « The one and only

While, in terms of the result, things didn’t go as

planned in his first start, he caught the eye with

his performance, before again impressing in last

weekend’s away victory against Birmingham City.

On his arrival at the club, the youngster

only knew of Ryan Ledson, with the fellow

Liverpudlian being a family friend.

Tom admitted: “Ryan was good the first

week, especially the first day helping

me settle in straight away.

“Anything I’ve needed he’s kind of looked

out for me, and I’ve spent a lot of time

with Liam [Delap] since he’s come in.

“I knew him before from playing Manchester City

with Everton at the Academy, but this is obviously

the first time we’ve played with each other and

I feel like there’s already been glimpses of what

we can add to the team, and hopefully we can

create that partnership and score some goals.”

For Liam, it’s the second loan move of his career

– after spending the first half of this campaign

with Stoke City – but it’s Tom’s first taste of

senior football away from Goodison Park.

He’s been involved with the Toffees’ first

team in recent months, training almost

exclusively with the Premier League squad,

and has made three appearances for them.

However, keen to kick on with his development, Tom

knew getting out on loan and gaining some experience

was the best thing for him at this stage of his career.

He said: “I had a good start to the season

with the U21s and to get that experience with

the first team from training with them since

like October has been good, just training with

better quality and getting more experience.

“Making my Premier League debut was

obviously a good highlight and coming on

in the cup; just getting minutes where I can

and trying to impress the manager.

“Working under someone like Frank Lampard

was great, and I felt like I was sort of past the

youth ages, and if there weren’t going to be

opportunities in the first team then I wanted to

come out on loan to try and develop myself.

“It was the right thing to do and now I’m

here I just want to take everything in my

stride and perform as well as I can.”

Having joined Everton at the age of ten,

it’s been quite the journey for the centre

forward over the past decade.

Aged 18 when he signed his first professional

contract in 2021, Tom has since penned a

new deal with the Toffees, which will see

him stay there until at least 2025.

The one and only » 21

“WE’LL PUT OUR ALL

INTO THE GAME AND

GIVE IT OUR BEST

SHOT AND SEE WHAT

HAPPENS.”

Not many players end up managing to

go as far on their journey as Tom has,

with many Academy prospects having

their dream ruthlessly taken away.

He admitted: “I had a few ups and downs

at the start, but then at around 14 or 15 I

thought I had a good chance of making it.

“There was actually a tournament I got left out of

at like U14s and I then somehow played a game for

the U16s and I scored in the game, and that was like

two or three years above my age, so I was thinking

if I can do it against these then I can kick on.

“Since then, I feel like I’ve just come on. With

the U16s I had a good season, then in the U18s I

scored 17 goals I think before the season got cut

short for Covid, and then I broke into the U23s.

“I started coming off the bench and then made a few

starts in the latter stages of that season, and then

I had a good start to the season this time round.”

Getting to that point wasn’t easy either, with

long days and lots of commitment required on

the way to football becoming his career.

In his mid-teens, Tom would often put in 14-hour

days between school and football, leaving the house

just after seven in the morning, before returning

late to do it all over again the next day.

“NOW I’M HERE,

I JUST WANT TO

TAKE EVERYTHING

IN MY STRIDE AND

PERFORM AS WELL

AS I CAN.”

His days would consist of school firstly, before

heading to Finch Farm to train, put in some work

in the gym, and then finishing off any schoolwork

in the education block at the training facilities.

“It was a lot and it’s a side that people

probably don’t see,” he said.

“People probably think you just get up,

go to football, earn a ton of money and

that’s you sorted, but it’s not like that.

“It’s demanding and you’ve got to be really

strong, determined and disciplined as well.

“Obviously, when you see your mates going

out, you think ‘I could go out’, but you’ve

got training so you stay in and do the right

things to help you with your football.

“But, don’t get me wrong, I don’t regret any of it.”

It’s also helpful for young players to have a good

support network around them to drive them

on, and that’s something Tom certainly has.

He lives with his parents, two brothers – Sean

and twin Ryan – and his sister, Emily, in what

he describes as 'the mad house' in Aintree.

His parents made endless trips down the

M57 back and forth to Finch Farm to taxi Tom

to and from training while he was coming

through the age groups, while they all come

and watch him at games as often as possible.

“They’re dead supportive,” he said. “They’ve

never pushed me to do it, I just wanted to do

it and they’ve always fully supported me.

“I used to play with my brothers. I used to

play in the same team as my twin, Ryan, and

it kind of would be me and him, and then

it ended up just being me, because maybe

he didn’t want it as much in the end.

“My sister loves it now, too. She likes coming

to see me play and the same with my mum.

“It’s nice on the day of a game having your

whole family there because it makes you feel

good and you want to perform for them.

“It’s good because when you’re in football it’s

hectic, everything’s dead busy, but when you

come home it’s nice to switch off and just relax.

“They come back from work and it’s bonkers, but

it’s nice because we all have a bit of banter with

everyone around the house, so it’s good.”

» The lowdown «

It’s the battle of the Lilywhites here at Deepdale, as North End brace themselves for a fierce

encounter with Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. Striker Harry Kane took his side into

the fourth round of the FA Cup by netting the only goal against Portsmouth, to set up a first

meeting with North End since 2009. That resulted in a 5-1 victory for today’s visitors, as the goals

were fired in by the likes of Peter Crouch, Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe. With all attention

on this fixture, though, manager Antonio Conte will know just how important it is to bring home

silverware – having won nine trophies so far in his managerial career. He opted to make seven

changes in the previous round, but with the likes of Bryan Gil, Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane

starting in attack, there was certainly no lack of quality on show. It's been a mixed month overall

for Spurs, with defeats coming against the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, but they head

to Deepdale on the back of a 1-0 victory away from home against Fulham earlier in the week.

Southampton, Celtic (loan)

England international Fraser Forster began

his career at Newcastle United, before having

loan spells at Stockport County, Bristol Rovers

and Norwich City – achieving promotion to the

Championship with the latter. Much of his career

has been spent with Celtic, with his first spell

there being a loan in 2010, before a permanent

move in 2012, and he then returned for the

2019/20 season. Overall, the ‘keeper lifted four

Scottish Premiership titles, three Scottish Cups

and a Scottish League Cup during his time there.

In 2014, Forster joined Southampton and went

on to register 134 Premier League appearances,

including 42 clean sheets and a player of the

month award. Now with Spurs, and with plenty

of experience behind him, he often has to settle

for a place on the bench, but he was called into

action in the previous round of this tournament,

keeping a clean sheet against Portsmouth.

Davinson Sánchez

26-years-old

Central Defender

Previous clubs:

Atlético Nacional, Ajax

Colombian defender Davinson Sánchez joined

Atlético Nacional in 2013 and soon made his

professional debut at the age of just 17. His

performances over the next few years were

catching the eye of some of Europe’s biggest

clubs, and it was Ajax who secured his signature

in 2016. He would only go on to stay there for one

campaign, such was the level of his performances.

Being named the club’s player of the year, again

there were teams sniffing around, and that’s

where Spurs swooped in in 2017. He became a

crucial part of their team and, in the 2018/19

campaign, played a key role in Spurs reaching the

final of the Champions League. Sánchez has gone

on to make 135 appearances in all since joining

the North London side, but gametime has been

relatively limited so far this campaign. However,

he has played 90 minutes in all domestic cup

games and will be hoping to feature this evening.

Previous clubs:

Born in Stockholm, now representing his country

at international level, Dejan Kulusevski made

the brave decision to move over to Italy as a

16-year-old. Over there, he joined the youth

ranks at Atalanta, to become part of the first

team in 2019. After showcasing his talent on

loan at Parma, Juventus signed the youngster,

before allowing him to spend the remainder of

the campaign back on loan. During this spell, he

scored ten goals and provided nine assists from

39 appearances, to claim the Serie A 2019/20

best young player award. Kulusevski then took

his chance at Juve – becoming a regular in the

2020/21 season, lifting the Coppa Italia and also

winning the Supercoppa Italiana. Tottenham

Hotspur got their signing through the door in

January 2022 on an 18-month loan deal and he

has proved to be a huge success, with a return

of a seven goals and 13 assists since his arrival.

Previous clubs:

An Academy graduate, Harry Kane has risen to

become one of the world’s greatest stars. Leyton

Orient were the first club to take him on loan in

2011, where he made his Football League debut and

scored five in 18 games. Then Millwall, Norwich

City and Leicester City followed. Kane was handed

his first Premier League start for Spurs in April

2014 and instantly impressed, scoring against

Sunderland. Rapidly improving since then, the

striker has smashed numerous records and

reached milestones for club and country that

any aspiring footballer would dream of. In March

2022, for example, Kane climbed above Thierry

Henry in the all-time Premier League goalscoring

list, while at the Qatar World Cup, he bagged his

53rd international goal to equal Wayne Rooney’s

record as England’s top scorer. He is also now

level with Jimmy Greaves as Spurs' top scorer in

history, with 266 to their names.

first, best, last...

We look back on our first ever win against Spurs, our last win and our biggest

victory against the North London outfit – two of which came in the FA Cup.

FIRST

The first time the clubs met was 123

years ago yesterday! It was an FA

Cup first round tie that was played on

Saturday 27th January 1900 and North

End started their 20th century cup

campaign with a home victory over the

then Southern League Spurs.

It was a North End side that struggled

in the first division that season, but

were buoyed at the start of the year by

a couple of good cup results.

Over 7,000 were inside Deepdale for

the visit of the side from the capital

and they saw James Stevenson grab

the only goal of the game and set up a

local derby with Blackburn Rovers in

the second round.

It was Stevenson’s only goal in the

competition that season, but added to

his five in the league, giving him half a

dozen in his 28 appearances.

As mentioned, the Lilywhites went on to

play Blackburn in round two and again

made progress, before being knocked

out in a replay against Nottingham

Forest in the third round, following a

goalless draw at Deepdale.

PNE line-up: McBride, Dunn, Orrell, T

Eccleston, McIntyre, Elliott, Murray, Gara,

Stevenson, Pierce, Henderson.

First - Peter McBride (the one in the hat!) - part of

the team that first met Spurs in 1900

Best - hat-rick hero Dennis Hatsell

BEST

PNE prepared for the FA Cup final in

perfect fashion, by hammering Spurs

less than two weeks before they faced

West Brom at Wembley.

The Lilywhites travelled to White Hart

Lane on Monday 19th April – Easter

Monday – and would come away with

the two points and six goals, as they

thrashed their hosts 6-2 in front of a

crowd of 30,206.

North End, who finished the season

11th (Spurs finished 16th), were only

outscored in the first division by league

title winners Wolves, with PNE netting

87 times in their 42 matches, and this

was the fourth time they had grabbed

a half dozen in all competitions.

On the day, Dennis Hatsell was the star

of the show, grabbing a hat-trick, to

take him to 11 goals for the season.

The other scorers were Bobby Foster,

Angus Morrison and a penalty from

Jimmy Baxter. Top scorer that season,

Charlie Wayman – who would score

two weeks later in the FA Cup Final –

and who finished the season with 32

goals, was not involved – maybe being

rested ahead of the date at Wembley.

PNE line-up: Thompson, Cunningham,

Walton, Docherty, Marston, Forbes,

Campbell, Foster, Hatsell, Baxter, Morrison.

LAST

The last time North End were victorious

against today’s visitors also came in

the FA Cup, when the Lilywhites were

a second division (Championship) side

and Spurs were a top flight team.

It came in March 1966 in the fifth

round. PNE had already seen off

Charlton Athletic and Bolton Wanderers

– in a replay – to set up the last 16

clash with the North Londerers.

Nearly 37,000 packed into Deepdale

and would see the Black Prince, Alex

Dawson, and Ernie Hannigan score

the goals in a famous 2-1 success that

set up another almighty tie, against

Manchester United in the quarter-final.

Dawson, a Busby Babe himself, scored

18 goals that season, 14 of which came

in the league, with Hannigan also

getting into double figures, finishing

the season with 14 in all competitions

for Jimmy Milne’s men.

PNE line-up: Kelly, Ross, Smith, Lawton,

Singleton, Kendall, Hannigan, Godfrey,

Dawson, Spavin, Lee.

Last - The Black Prince Alex Dawson

Since signing from Bayer Leverkusen in August

as a teenager for Hamburger SV and scored on

his Bundesliga debut. During his time at Hamburg,

he registered 20 goals from 78 appearances,

before joining Bayer Leverkusen in June 2013. His

goalscoring remained consistent which helped

the club on their way to successive Champions

League qualifications and, because of this,

Tottenham Hotspur began to take notice. They

were able to tempt Son with a move and, on

his home debut, the South Korean scored twice

in a 3-1 Europa League victory over Qarabag.

Together with team-mate Harry Kane, the duo

combined for a record 37 Premier League goals

last year, meaning they have claimed more goal

contributions than any other duo in the history

of the division. While winning the 2019/20 FIFA

Puskas Award is impressive enough – for a

superb solo goal against Burnley – Son is also a

Premier League Golden Boot winner. He stepped

up his game to another level in the 2021/22

season, with 23 goals being enough to share

the award with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

career in 2006 and took Bari to a Serie B title,

as well as Siena to promotion from the same

division two years later. After taking over at

Juventus in 2011, Conte won three consecutive

Serie A titles, but switched to the Italian national

team three years later. He would take them as

far as the quarter-finals of the UEFA Euro 2016,

when Chelsea then came calling. His time there

was quickly successful, winning the Premier

League and FA Cup over two seasons, but in 2019

he returned to Italy with Inter Milan. Repeating a

similar story to Chelsea, Conte guided Inter to the

UEFA Europa League Final in his first season, then

won the 2020/21 Serie A title in his second. Now

at Tottenham Hotspur, since signing in November

2021, the manager faces the challenge of bringing

silverware to Spurs, with the club looking for

their first trophy since 2008.

This evening’s FA Cup tie with

Tottenham Hotspur will be

the 12th time that our two

clubs have clashed in the

competition.

The first time, back in 1900, was a first

round affair, with North End beating

the Southern League champions elect

by a single goal from James Stevenson,

which you can read more about over

the page. That was the season that

Spurs moved to White Hart Lane and

changed their colours to the same as

Preston North End’s – a tribute to the

most successful team of that era. They

had previously played in chocolate

and gold! At that time Tottenham

had induced a number of league

professionals to play for them in the

Southern League, including five former

North End players. The following year

Spurs beat PNE 4-2 after a 1-1 draw

and another former North Ender,

Sandy Brown, scored a hat-trick in

the replay. He scored 15 FA Cup goals

that season, going on to score in every

round, including the Final, that season

as Spurs became the first non-league

team to win the trophy.

The official matchday programme from when the two sides met in March 1937.

PNE versus Tottenham Hotspur, FA Cup, 1953.

The one and only » 39

Joe Marston leads the North End side out at White

Hart Lane in 1953.

In the early 1920s we met each other

twice, both times at the semi-final

stage, both games being played at

Hillsborough, Sheffield. The 1920/21 FA

Cup run resulted in Spurs beating us

2-1 and going on to win the coveted

trophy once more. The 1921/22 semifinal

saw the result reversed, but we

lost the Final to Huddersfield Town to

a controversial penalty (no VAR back

then!).

Two more games followed in the 1930s,

with both clubs winning one game

each by 3-1. In the Sir Tom Finney era

we were drawn against each other

during the 1952/53 competition, Spurs

going through 1-0 after a 2-2 draw at

Deepdale. In those games in the 1930s

and 1950s, both teams changed colours

due to the kit clash.

Then the game many of our older

readers will remember; the fifth

round game when the likes of Jimmy

Greaves, Alan Gilzean and Pat Jennings

graced the Deepdale turf. It looked

game over after a very early Greaves

strike, but North End overcame their

top-flight opponents with goals from

Alex Dawson and Ernie Hannigan.

Greaves was on the scoresheet once

again the last time the two teams

clashed in 1968, with Spurs winning 3-1

at White Hart Lane. We are due another

win... COYW!

FOR

RECORD

with Mike Payne

Over the years many club records have been set by Preston North End players, and in this

new series of articles we look at some of those records that have been set, and broken,

here at Deepdale. Some are well known, but others are more obscure, and hopefully

fascinating. All records are up to the end of last season.

It has not been unusual for our

paths to cross with Tottenham

Hotspur in the FA Cup over the

years, although this is the first

such meeting since 1968. It is

quite fascinating to have a look at

some of our previous meetings

with today’s opponents in the FA

Cup, and two games – some 66

years apart – caught the eye.

As soon as the draw was made known

for the 1899/1900 FA Cup competition,

Prestonians were jumping for joy, as

the London side were starting to be

recognised as the second Preston

North End! So many of the Spurs

players were ex-North Enders, and not

only that, they adopted our colours and

our nickname. They were the current

champions of the Southern League and

almost came to Deepdale as favourites.

That was because North End were

having a very poor season in division

one and were not that well prepared

for the game, unlike Spurs. The

Londoners spent some time training at

Morecambe preparing for the match,

and according to one report, they

arrived at Deepdale 'as fit as fiddles!'

The report went on to say that: “On the

other hand, Preston did not undergo

any special preparation, they simply

took care of themselves!” It sounded

like a recipe for disaster to me.

As it turned out, the match was well

contested by both sides, with each

intent on winning, as early attacks

at either end were repelled by the

respective goalkeepers. North End

had the mighty Peter McBride in goal

and he had an excellent game, as did

the whole PNE defence. It was the

same at the other end, with Davie

Haddow saving shots from James

Stevenson and Jackie Pierce, and the

Spurs defence keeping a tight rein

on the home forwards. Although the

day was dry, a previous long spell of

rain had made the ground churn up

and become very heavy. Thus, both

sides reached the break in need of a

breather. When the sides reappeared,

it was North End who looked as though

they had enjoyed the rest more,

coming out with renewed vigour,

The one and only » 41

Ernie Hannigan

attacking in force. Haddow made three

quick saves, but was helpless when

Stevenson fired in a long shot which

deceived the goalkeeper and found

the net. Spurs reacted well, though,

and immediately fought back hard.

But North End’s defence held firm and,

with McBride in commanding form,

they repelled all that Spurs had to

offer, even though there were some

narrow squeaks for the PNE goal in

the last few minutes. So, most of the

crowd went home happy to see North

End in the next round, a local derby

against Blackburn, and it is worth

noting that 7,061 tickets were sold for

this game, and the total receipts came

to the magnificent sum of £217. Oh, how

times have changed. Meanwhile, Spurs

were to have the last laugh to some

extent, as the following season, in 1901,

they were also drawn to play us here.

This time the result was a 1-1 draw

and Spurs won the replay 4-2 and

went on to become the first Southern

League club to win the FA Cup.

After that game the teams met again in

1921, and this time it was the semi-final,

and alas, we lost 2-1 thanks to two

goals by Bert Bliss for Spurs and just

the solitary goal by Frank Jefferis for

us. Ironically, a year later it was our

turn for revenge, and again in the

semi-final. This time North End ran

out 2-1 winners, but sadly PNE then

lost the Final to Huddersfield. Twice in

the 1930s, once in 1953 and then twice

again in the 1960s, the clubs met again.

So far the results for us in this fixture

have gone like this – Won, Lost, Lost,

Won, Lost, Won, Lost, so on that basis…

The other match to feature in this

article is the one played here at

Deepdale in March 1966, not least

because I have a Pathé News piece of

cine film of the game and it is etched in

my memory. It was a fifth round game

in front of a packed house, although

for North End it was a bad start.

With just three minutes gone, that

ace poacher James Peter Greaves,

or Jimmy to his friends, nipped in at

the far post to shoot home after a

cross by Jimmy Robertson. However,

spurred on by an inspired display from

captain Nobby Lawton, PNE came back

strongly. In the 32nd minute, a huge

deep cross from George Ross from

near the halfway line went beyond the

far post where the Black Prince, Alex

Dawson, sent a magnificent header

past Pat Jennings. On the hour mark,

North End then sensationally took a

very deserved lead. Alan Spavin’s shot

was parried by Jennings, but Ernie

Hannigan was in like a whippet to fire

home the loose ball. Cue jubilation from

the Deepdale terraces! A late scare

came when Greaves was all alone

and seemingly certain to score, until

Alan Kelly came out and smothered

the striker’s shot. A memorable game

ended in a fine win for North End.

It will certainly be ironic if Harry Kane

should break Jimmy Greaves’ Spurs

scoring record here at Deepdale,

because not only did Jimmy score in

this game, he also once scored five

for Chelsea here in a league match.

ACADEMY MATCH REPORT

GILLINGHAM U18s 1

PRESTON NORTH END U18s 2

Preston North End U18s secured

a place in the fifth round of the

FA Youth Cup thanks to a 2-1

comeback victory over Gillingham.

The hosts took the lead inside the

opening minute through Ronnie Sithole,

but a leveller from Felipe Rodriguez-

Gentile sent the sides into the break

level.

Home skipper Alex Giles saw red with

ten minutes to go and North End made

their advantage count on 86 minutes,

when Kian Best struck a fantastic freekick

to set up a fifth round tie against

Luton Town.

PNE named a strong team, with the

likes of Finlay Cross-Adair and Kaedyn

Kamara – who both featured in the

senior version of the competition earlier

in the month – named in the starting XI.

The game got off to a bad start, though,

as the hosts took the lead as the clock

hit 60 seconds thanks to a superb strike

from Sithole, which flew above the head

of James Pradic in goal.

PNE settled from that point and had

the next few opportunities of the tie.

Firstly, Noah Mawene sent a low strike

just inches wide, before Jacob Slater

tested Taite Holtam in goal, who was up

to the task.

There was nothing Holtam could

do, however, on 22 minutes when

Rodriguez-Gentile – following on from

his five goals in the previous round –

wonderfully lobbed the ‘keeper, after

being found by Cross-Adair.

Cross-Adair then nearly got on the

scoresheet himself less than ten

minutes later after being cleverly found

by Kitt Nelson, but his strike went

across the face of goal and just wide.

There was soon to be a lengthy

stoppage, as Gillingham man Elliott

Moore received treatment following

a strong but fair challenge from Kian

Best, and the youngster left the field on

a stretcher with everyone’s best wishes.

The action was lively from the off in the

second half, and PNE felt they could have

had a penalty on 58 minutes when the

ball appeared to strike an arm inside the

area, but nothing was given.

At the other end, there were shouts for

a sending-off as James Pradic brought

down Joe Gbode as he broke through

on goal, the referee giving him a yellow

card.

That was to prove important for PNE,

too, as the Wales youth international

came up with a superb double save just

minutes later to deny Sithole and then

Matt MacArthur.

On 65 minutes, Cross-Adair came close

for North End, breaking through on goal

and sending a powerful effort towards

Holtam, who managed to make the save.

With ten to go, the hosts lost their

captain as central defender Giles was

shown a second yellow, and PNE soon

made their advantage count.

Best stood over a free-kick on 86

minutes, before sending it over the wall

and superbly finding the bottom corner,

cuing huge celebrations on the pitch and

on the touchline.

North End managed the game superbly

from that point to seal victory and set

up a fifth round tie away to Luton Town

– a repeat of last year’s Youth Alliance

Cup Final – on Monday 6th February,

with a 7pm kick-off at Kenilworth Road.

ACADEMY INTERVIEW

MATCH-WINNER BEST

HAD FULL CONFIDENCE IN

FA YOUTH CUP VICTORY

Match-winner Kian Best was always confident Preston North End U18s could turn the

game around after conceding early in the FA Youth Cup victory over Gillingham.

Best earned his side a

place in the fifth round of

the competition when he

superbly executed a 25-yard

free-kick with just a few minutes

left on the clock.

On the game as a whole, Kian said:

“We started off slowly. Obviously,

we conceded first, but then after

that I think we deserved to win.

“We’ve gone behind quite a lot in

the last few games, which needs

to stop, but the team has shown a

few times that when we’ve gone

behind, we can still win games, so

I was still confident.

“With the players we had on the

pitch, I think we all believed in

each other and trusted each other

to get back into the game.

“We created chances throughout

the night so it was good to win

because I feel like we deserved it.”

Lining up as part of a defensive

three, Kian was perhaps not the

man you’d expect to be stepping

up to take a free-kick from a

dangerous position just outside

the area.

He’s put away quite a few of them,

though, while progressing through

the age groups, but it was only

a late decision for him to be on

those set-piece duties.

Kian laughed: “Fenners [Andy

Fensome] actually told me just

before we went out that he wanted

me to take the direct free-kicks,

so as soon as it got given, I fancied

myself in that position.

“I got booked actually for moving

the ball more inside for the freekick

because I thought it would

have given me a better chance.

“But then when the ref moved the

ball back and booked me, I felt I

had to score to show him that I

didn’t have to move the ball.

“I think someone in the

wall turned or something

because it went through a

gap and it went in.

“It was a good moment

because my mum

and dad were in

the crowd as well.

They drove down

in the morning,

so it was good

to celebrate

in front of

them.”

late stunner from Kian Best

earned Preston North End

reserves a point against

Blackpool in the Central League.

PNE went ahead 12 minutes in through

Finlay Cross-Adair before Tayt Trusty

equalised for the visitors with virtually

the last kick of the first half.

Blackpool then thought they’d done

enough to earn victory when Ewan

Bange scored in the 87th minute, but

Best – fresh from his late winner in

the FA Youth Cup against Gillingham

– popped up with another fantastic

strike to draw level.

The visitors enjoyed the first chances

of the game, firstly through Luke

Mariette, who curled a left-footed

effort over from 25 yards, before Josh

Nyame then had a powerful strike of

his own saved.

Mariette also dragged an effort wide of

goal on 12 minutes and, within seconds,

North End went down the other end to

take the lead. Nelson did well to slot

the ball through for Cross-Adair and

the striker made no mistake by slotting

it under the ‘keeper.

Jacob Slater came close to a second

on the half-hour mark as he saw an

effort from a tight angle strike the

woodwork, while Cross-Adair and

Nelson almost combined again minutes

later but a defender came to the

rescue.

The latter also had a big penalty shout

on 37 minutes, as he looked to be

hacked down after a clever touch and

turn inside the area, but the appeals

were waved away.

After Donovan Lescott had sent an

effort wide from a promising position,

Blackpool got themselves an equaliser

in the second minute of stoppage-time

through Trusty, who pounced after

Pradic had parried an effort out.

Shortly into the second half, Mariette

had a big chance to give his side the

lead, but he couldn’t find the target as

the ball fell his way just a few yards

out.

At the other end, North End came close

themselves on 66 minutes through

half-time substitute Ellis Horan, who

saw his goalbound effort take a nick

off a defender and spin inches wide.

It looked as though Blackpool had

done enough to earn the points with

just three minutes left on the clock

as Bange took the ball in well with

his back to goal, before turning and

finding the back of the net.

Best had other ideas, though, as he

scored his second goal in as many

games, picking the ball up 25 yards

out and drilling it low into the bottom

corner to earn a point for his side.

MATCH REPORT:

ATHERTON LABURNUM

ROVERS LADIES 3

PNE WOMEN 1

Preston North End Women’s run

in the Lancashire FA Women’s

Challenge Cup came to an end at

the quarter-final stage, as they lost

3-1 away to Atherton Laburnum Rovers

Ladies.

The hosts opened the scoring inside

15 minutes, before Freya Hunt levelled

matters from the penalty spot.

However, two goals in the second half

for Atherton swung the tie back in their

favour and brought North End’s Cup

campaign to an end.

PNE haven’t played too much football

in recent months, with the weather

causing havoc to the schedule, and

perhaps it showed in a slow start from

the team.

Proudly sponsored by N Palmer Deliveries Ltd

The one and only » 55

It was the hosts who were on top from

the off and they took the lead within the

first quarter of an hour, when a mistake

at the back from the Lilywhites was

punished.

Atherton continued to press and cause

problems, and they would have doubled

their lead were it not for some good

stops from Justine Elliott in goal.

They proved important, too, as North

End won themselves a penalty just

after the half-hour mark when Madison

Hadley was brought down in the area.

Midfielder Hunt resumed duties from

the spot and drew her side level before

the break.

The hosts got themselves back ahead

shortly into the second period, though,

when Elliott could do nothing to

prevent a good strike finding the back

of the net.

Looking for another equaliser, PNE

changed to a three up top and as a

result created some good opportunities,

but they couldn’t quite find the allimportant

goal.

Instead, it was Atherton who scored

the fourth of the game as they caught

North End out with a fast break late on

to seal victory and their place in the

semi-finals.

PNECET IN

ZANZIBAR:

APRIL 2023!

Preston North End Community and Education Trust is

co-ordinating a trip for a team of more than 20 volunteers

to visit Zanzibar in April 2023 to leave a positive lasting

legacy of Preston North End on the African island.

The one and only » 57

We caught up with Will Newbolt,

Partnerships Manager for

African Adventures, the travel

company that PNECET is using for the

trip….

Tell us a bit about yourself and your

role with African Adventures.

My role at African Adventures is to

design bespoke volunteer trips for

organisations that are interested in

visiting Africa. Once we have their trip

details finalised, I help them to launch

their trip and recruit volunteers to

travel with them. As well as running

trips for community club organisations,

we also work with schools, businesses

and scouts.

Why did you get into this line of work

initially?

I previously worked for Tranmere

Rovers in the Community and we

partnered with African Adventures. I

was the group leader for Tranmere’s

volunteer trips to both Kenya and Ghana.

Seeing the work that volunteers help

African Adventures do at their partner

schools and the impact it was having

on the children’s lives, made me want

to have a complete career change and

go into international development. I

was lucky enough to be offered a job

at African Adventures, where I work

closely with their partner schools and

continue to support other clubs to share

the same experience I had.

Can you explain more about African

Adventures and the work you do?

African Adventures is a unique travel

company, partnered with over 20

schools in developing areas of Ghana,

Kenya and Zanzibar, that supports

over 22,000 children. We organise

life-changing trips for people who

want to help bring our work to life

by volunteering at one of our partner

schools. We pride ourselves on our

ethical, sustainable volunteering model

that puts our partner schools at the

heart of everything we do. They tell us

what help they want, and we recruit

volunteers from the UK and beyond to

make it happen. Whether it’s building

a new classroom, or running a sports

coaching session, there are lots of

ways you can get involved and make a

difference.

Why is it important that PNECET

facilitates trips like this for

volunteers to take part in?

It is fantastic that organisations such as

PNECET are facilitating trips with us. It

is widely recognised the brilliant work

that PNE do for their local community,

and their trip to Zanzibar is adding an

international aspect to the charity’s

work, whilst involving people from

their local community. Zanzibar’s

government-run schools are severely

underfunded and are struggling to cope

with a growing population of young

people. It is not unusual for classes to

contain upwards of 100 children with

just two teachers. Some schools have

two sittings, one in the morning and one

in the afternoon, literally cutting access

to education in half. By volunteering

in Zanzibar, volunteers will be lending

teaching support and improving the

school environment through renovation

which is a huge help.

What would you say to PNE fans,

local schools, businesses, and

organisations who might be

interested in going on future trips?

If you are thinking of going on a trip, go

for it! You will return home with a new

outlook on life, meet some amazing new

people and learn about a new culture

whilst making a difference to children’s

lives. It’s an experience I will never

forget.

EFL WEEK OF ACTION:

JORDAN STOREY AND ALI

MCCANN VISIT GREENLANDS

PRIMARY SCHOOL

Preston North End players Jordan Storey and Ali McCann paid a special visit to

Greenlands Primary School to speak with children about the importance of healthy

eating, as part of EFL Week of Action.

Taking place from 16th to 20th

January, EFL Week of Action shone

a light on the impact that EFL clubs

and their club community organisations

(CCOs) have on their local communities.

The pair answered a variety of questions

about what they typically eat throughout

the week, how they look after their bodies

and what it is like representing Preston

North End, before signing autographs and

posing for pictures.

The players’ visit was part of Preston North

End Community and Education Trust’s

[PNECET] 'PASTA' session, which stands for

'play and skills at tea-time activities'.

Designed to support healthy lifestyles

through a range of fun and interactive

activities centred around diet and

exercise, the programme engages

families with children between five and

eight-years-old, to help them to learn to

cook six different recipes over the course

of six weeks.

“It was really good to come here

and speak to the children about the

importance of nutrition and having a

healthy, balanced diet,” explained Storey.

“Especially at their young age, if they

can pick up these positive habits from

early on.

"The advice I gave them was to make sure

they're eating their greens and to try and

have a good breakfast such as porridge

or Weetabix, to set them up for the day.

"Pasta with a bit of chicken and tomato

or mushroom sauce is another simple

meal if their parents or guardians could

support with this.”

Speaking more broadly on the power

of PNECET's work across Preston and

surrounding areas, Storey said: "I think

Preston North End Community and

Education Trust does so many good things

with the younger and older generations,

from different backgrounds, and

sometimes it can go under the radar. The

Trust helps bring the city together and

coming to events such as these is the

least that we as players can do in terms

of giving back."

Participant Kealan, who attends the PASTA

sessions each week, talked about his

delight at meeting the PNE stars.

“When my teacher told me the players

were coming, I was so excited!" He said.

“I asked them why we should eat

vegetables and they said it’s good for

giving us energy and keeping us healthy.

“I play football and basketball at school,

so I need lots of energy to play well!”

programme, please email grace.
