A word from the Principal...
Dear families,
As we move into next week, I am aware that the strike action being taken by some trade unions
will cause disruption.
However, it is unfortunately a necessary step and the only one available to staff who are working
tirelessly for all of our children in an underfunded system. All school staff have faced pay freezes
over the past decade and for certain roles, the real terms pay cut equates to almost 25% over the
past 10 years. This is coupled with the increasing challenge of delivering the exciting and challenging
provision we strive for despite rising inflation and increasing financial challenges. This is felt
particularly acutely at Ludgvan, where we constantly endeavour to go ‘above and beyond’ across
the curriculum with additional resources allocated to our minibuses to facilitate taking our learning
into the community; our Outdoor Learning provision; 1:1 Chromebooks in KS2 and residential trips
for Y2 upwards to name but a few.
Essentially, what I am saying is that staff have not taken this decision lightly and the ambition is to
ensure that we can continue to offer our ambitious and exciting curriculum long into the future.
I know you will all join me in supporting our staff in their decision to stand up for our profession
and our children’s interests.
Kind regards,
Mr Adam Anderson
Principal

I’m thinking of…:
Start this game with a single object in mind and the phrase, “I am thinking of something ….,”
and then name a feature or attribute of the object or thing. So it might begin, “I am thinking
of something that is blue.” The other player(s) are welcome to make a guess or ask for
another clue. Go back and forth between clues and guesses until they work out the correct
answer.
Outdoor Learning...
The past two weeks have been a busy time for our pupils during Outdoor
Learning sessions. The children have been busy getting back to nature, making
the most of the wonderful winter sun that we have been experiencing. Animals
have been a big focus across our sessions, both through having the independence
and responsibility of tending our school animals and looking out for the
wild birds by making bird feeders. We’ve also been developing various skills
across the year groups including using tools, making shelters and building fires.
Year 6 worked hard in teams to build effective campfires that could be sustained
for a longer period of time.
If you haven’t already done so, check out our new Ludgvan School Farm Facebook
page to stay up to date with our farming activities.

Early Years have had a fantastic couple of weeks learning about Lunar New
Year. We read a story called ‘The Great Race’ about the zodiac animals and
then explored maps and the globe to find Asia. We talked about different ways
the New Year is celebrated and were very lucky to have Lucus’s Mum come and
visit us. Alice helped us to make the zodiac calendar and even left us some
yummy treats! Outside, we have been investigating how to stop water flowing,
measuring using different objects and building lots of dens and houses!

Year 1 have had an extremely busy two weeks! Our geography last week was
to locate Asia on a world map and explore the features and characteristics of
China. The children learnt about the Great Wall of China and the Terracotta
Army. We discovered that dragons are an important part of many celebrations
in China. The children made beautiful Chinese dragons and painted wonderful
pictures of animals that live in China.
This week we have been learning about our class continent Australia and the
children all dressed up as something linked to Australia. They all looked amazing!
We looked at famous landmarks and the interesting animals that live
there. Keep up the amazing work.

Year 2 have been really engaged and eager to learn more about our topic of
space. We have looked back at the history of space and put the events in order
such as the first man and woman in space, the first man on the moon, the
first rocket launch, the space race and even the first animals in space. We have
incorporated this in to our guided reading where we have enjoyed a range of
space themed fiction and non-fiction texts.
We have also enjoyed using pastels to create our own drawings of the solar
system which has also helped us to learn the order of the planets.
Our class continent is Asia. Last week, we loved coming to school dressed up
and really enjoyed our Asian themed lunch, which linked in nicely to Chinese
New Year last weekend. We ‘flew’ on our aeroplane to Asia and then did a tour
of the continent where we learnt more about specific countries, animals in Asia,
foods, climate and much more. We looked for Asian plants outside in outdoor
learning with Mr Richards and made a range of Asian items such as Chinese
lanterns and tiger origami.
In our Science, we have been learning about food chains. We learnt about our
school farm animals and their places in the food chain. We then created our
own chalk food chains on the playground.

Year 3 have been busy in the classroom over the past two weeks. They have
been doing some great writing and have all made noticeable progress within
this area. They have really enjoyed using the thesaurus to find out lots of new
words. We have planned a story of our own and we are now ready to write it
next week. I am really looking forward to reading their stories. The children
have continued to focus on the Stone Age and they have looked at Skara Brea
in Scotland. They looked at the ancient village and then designed their own
Stone Age village, which they will be making in the coming weeks. In art the
children have enjoyed learning about the primary and secondary colours and
created a colour wheel to share their learning. Since the start of term the children
have had the opportunity to visit Penzance Gymnastics club. The children
have really enjoyed visiting the club and using the equipment. They are really
looking forward to their final session in the foam pit!

The children have been learning lots about Ancient Greece in English and history.
They are really enjoying the topic ‘What does it take to be a mythological
hero?’ In English, they have been writing diaries based around Greek gods and
goddesses, the writing has been excellent with the children using their knowledge
and personalities throughout their entries. This focus has continued in
history where they’ve been learning about Alexander the Great, ancient Greek
sports and pottery. They’ve also discussed the differences between primary and
secondary sources . The children visited Mounts Bay Academy last week, they
learnt and practiced their new dance for their performance in the Summer.

Over the past couple of weeks, Year 5 have got stuck straight into their space
topic. We have been exploring everything space related in Science from the
phases of the moon to the different types of planets around us to the history of
our understanding of the solar system over time. We were also incredibly lucky
to have Fran from the Royal Navy visit us this week and explain the importance
of space and its influence on our weather!
We have also been looking at land use over time in the UK and Year 5 created
fantastic presentations about three different parts of the UK. Year 5 have
created some beautiful persuasive letters in English, focusing on persuading
Mr Anderson to let Year 5 go on a school trip to space. Will Year 5 successfully
persuade him?

Year 6 have had an interesting and varied 2 weeks of learning.
Our PSHE unit based on Health and Wellbeing has allowed us to explore aspects
of our emotions, what causes them to become heightened and how we
can attempt to control the negatives ones in an appropriate way. This has led
us to try some Cosmic yoga - that was an interesting day!
We have also been taking part in some rugby training for our PE this half
term. We have learnt about some basic rules and how to pass the ball during
tag-rugby.
Now that we have finished our diary writing in English, Year 6 are very excited
to begin learning how to create eerie stories. We have begun gathering ideas
of what is good about spooky stories. We’ve discussed the power of figurative
language, pathetic fallacy and focused character description, as opposed to generic
description. We now have some fantastic ideas and will begin to create a
story map next week. Watch this space!
