As President of Connacht Rugby I am
pleased to speak to you today ahead
of this evening’s BKT United Rugby
Championship fixture with Emriates
Lions from South Africa.
Today marks the end of a long block of
games for our Pro team who have been
busy training and playing games since
the middle of November. There’s been
ups and downs in those two months so
fingers crossed the team can finish on
a high this evening and head into a welldeserved
break in a good position before
the next block of fixtures.

Tonight could be particularly momentous
for one of our own. Jack Carty needs 7
points to overtake Eric Elwood’s all-time
scoring record of 1152 points for the
province. This is a monumental feat and
one that Jack and everyone at Marist
College and Buccaneers RFC should be
very proud of. Fingers crossed his breaks
that record tonight as it would be only
fitting that he achieves the feat in front
of his home fans.
Over the last few weeks we saw the
Connacht Women in action during the
Vodafone Women’s Interprovincial
Championship. The squad and
management should be very proud of
their efforts, picking up a notable win
away to Ulster and battling valiantly away
to Leinster and home to Munster. The
squad was full of many young players
enjoying their first taste of interpro
action so the future is looking bright!
On the Club & Community scene,
recently we had the return of the
totalhealth Prozone Series, whereby
teenage boys and girls from across the
province learned position-specific skills
from professional Connacht players.
These events to me epitomize everything
that is good about the province. To see our
Professional stars give back to the next
generation was extremely heart-warming,
and long may it continue.
To our visitors today from South Africa, I’d
like to welcome their players and travelling
party for their first trip to the West of
Ireland. I understand you’ve had a long and
busy time away from your homes so I hope
you have a safe trip back after the game.

Last weekend was a tough day at
the office for Connacht losing to
Newcastle in the Challenge Cup.
Director of Rugby Andy Friend
said the squad left England
frustrated with the performance
at Kingston Park.
“We reviewed the game and its
frustrating that we can’t change
it regards the result and mistakes
we made”

This weekend attention turns o the
Lions who got their first win since
mid December after beating the
Dragons and Andy knows that will
give them new confidence coming
to Galway.
“They won at the weekend which
was their first in a few games so

in the URC this season as we’ve

This will be Andy’s last season
involved with Connacht and he
spoke about how the time is flying
as they get closer to the end of
the campaign.

so I figured it wasn’t the right time,” he

However, since making the choice to join
the international set-up, Kacper hasn’t
looked back.
The talented backrow forward has
previously impressed for Ireland U18
and as a member of underage Connacht
teams. He was also a mainstay in Sligo
Grammar’s backrow as they battled in
the Connacht Schools Senior Cup.
In fact, it appears Westport RFC has
embraced the twenty-year-old lining
out for his international side, with a
surge in demand for Poland flags in the
Mayo town in advance of Poland’s next
competitive fixture in February.
Kacper Palamarczuk’s rugby journey
started with Westport rugby minis
when he was just six years old.
The next stage of this journey will see
him step out at the Arcul de Triumph in
Bucharest on February 4th with hopes
of helping his native Poland gain victory
over Romania.
And when his playing career ends
many years from now, Kacper hopes it
includes an appearance at The Rugby
World Cup with his native Poland.
This ambition is paired with the goal
of winning this year’s Bank of Ireland
Connacht Junior Cup with Westport.
“My aim with Westport is to win the
Cup this season. It would be great to
bring it back home, while my main goal
for Poland is to one day make it to the
World Cup. It is very possible, especially
with all the young talent and amazing
coaching we have on board,” he said.
Those aims are certainly within reach for
the 20-year-old, with Westport into the
last four of this year’s Connacht Junior
Cup, while Poland is an international side
on the up after gaining promotion to this
year’s Rugby Europe Championship.
It was in that promotion push where
Kacper made his senior international
debut, starting a crucial game against
Lithuania last April when a positive result
was needed.
Discussing the experience, he said: “It’s
a really exciting experience to represent
your country. Going into my first camp
for Poland was a similar experience
