PRESIDENT’s
WELCOME
THank You To Our Partners for
their continued support
As President of Connacht Rugby I am
pleased to speak to you today ahead
of this evening’s BKT United Rugby
Championship fixture with Emriates
Lions from South Africa.
Today marks the end of a long block of
games for our Pro team who have been
busy training and playing games since
the middle of November. There’s been
ups and downs in those two months so
fingers crossed the team can finish on
a high this evening and head into a welldeserved
break in a good position before
the next block of fixtures.
Principal Partner
Official Partners
Tonight could be particularly momentous
for one of our own. Jack Carty needs 7
points to overtake Eric Elwood’s all-time
scoring record of 1152 points for the
province. This is a monumental feat and
one that Jack and everyone at Marist
College and Buccaneers RFC should be
very proud of. Fingers crossed his breaks
that record tonight as it would be only
fitting that he achieves the feat in front
of his home fans.
Over the last few weeks we saw the
Connacht Women in action during the
Vodafone Women’s Interprovincial
Championship. The squad and
management should be very proud of
their efforts, picking up a notable win
away to Ulster and battling valiantly away
to Leinster and home to Munster. The
squad was full of many young players
enjoying their first taste of interpro
action so the future is looking bright!
On the Club & Community scene,
recently we had the return of the
totalhealth Prozone Series, whereby
teenage boys and girls from across the
province learned position-specific skills
from professional Connacht players.
These events to me epitomize everything
that is good about the province. To see our
Professional stars give back to the next
generation was extremely heart-warming,
and long may it continue.
To our visitors today from South Africa, I’d
like to welcome their players and travelling
party for their first trip to the West of
Ireland. I understand you’ve had a long and
busy time away from your homes so I hope
you have a safe trip back after the game.
Go raibh mile maith agat, and enjoy the
evening.
Coach PREVIEW
“I think their game is built on set
piece”
“They have a massive scrum with
a big forward pack and have a
really good maul”
“They have a good attack but our
defence is one of the strongest
parts of our game so I’m confident
that our lads can stop them”
“They might not have the star
names like the other South
African sides but they have some
talented individuals that can hurt
teams”
For Connacht the hope of
reaching the play-offs are still in
sight but Andy Friend know’s they
need to get on a winning run from
now till the end of the season.
its really important that we don’t
have any more slip ups”
“Our backs are to the wall and
that’s down to us but I’m hoping
we finish strong which I believe
we can do”
Connacht welcome South
African side Emirates Lions to
The Sportsground this Saturday
for Round 13 of the BKT United
Rugby Championship, k/o
7:35pm.
Last weekend was a tough day at
the office for Connacht losing to
Newcastle in the Challenge Cup.
Director of Rugby Andy Friend
said the squad left England
frustrated with the performance
at Kingston Park.
“We reviewed the game and its
frustrating that we can’t change
it regards the result and mistakes
we made”
“A massive opportunity was
missed”
This weekend attention turns o the
Lions who got their first win since
mid December after beating the
Dragons and Andy knows that will
give them new confidence coming
to Galway.
“They won at the weekend which
was their first in a few games so
that should give them confidence
coming here”
“We know they are a tenacious
side, they stay in the game and
keep fighting till the end”
“We can’t afford another slip up
in the URC this season as we’ve
used up all that”
“We are very aware of how big
Saturday’s game is to us”
This will be Andy’s last season
involved with Connacht and he
spoke about how the time is flying
as they get closer to the end of
the campaign.
“Time is flying by and its hard
to believe that we only have a
minimum of six URC games left
and a minimum of one Challenge
Cup game”
“There’s still a job to do here and

Player PREVIEW
“Every team no matter where
they are provide a different
challenge, Welsh teams
are different, French and
South African, they all bring
something different”
“I suppose the one thing that
South African teams bring is
that they are always in the
fight”
“These guys coming at the
weekend have an unbelievable
scrum and have some really
good individuals in the front
row but we also have a good
scrum which that stats would
back”
“We really want to get
after their scrum and back
ourselves in the scrum”
This week it was announced
that Dylan Tierney-Martin
signed a new 3-year
contract keeping him at The
Sportsground till 2026. He
was speaking ahead of the
game against the Emirates
Lions about the new deal.
“I’m delighted about it” said
Dylan
“I’ve been in Connacht my
whole life, the last few years
haven’t been easy with
opportunities to show what
I can do but towards the
end of last season and this
season I’ve been able to get
minutes on the pitch to show
what I can do”
“I’m really excited with what
we can do over the next few
years, winning a trophy with
Connacht is one of my aims”
Tomorrow its back to BKT
United Rugby Championship
action for Connacht as they
welcome the Lions who
ended a bad run of result’s
last weekend when they beat
the Dragons. The Connacht
hooker Tierney-Martin spoke
about the challenge he’s
expecting for the South
African side.

cLUB & COMMUNITY
Ireland. I knew it was going to be a high
level and I needed to be ready for it.
“We needed to win with a bonus point in
order to get promoted to the European
Championships for the following
season. It was a brilliant experience
and we successfully got the bonus
point win we need to make history for
Poland”.
winning it and I got the Player of the
Tournament Award. Shortly after that I
got approached about the call-up. At the
time I was still involved with Connacht,
so I figured it wasn’t the right time,” he
added.
However, since making the choice to join
the international set-up, Kacper hasn’t
looked back.
The talented backrow forward has
previously impressed for Ireland U18
and as a member of underage Connacht
teams. He was also a mainstay in Sligo
Grammar’s backrow as they battled in
the Connacht Schools Senior Cup.
In fact, it appears Westport RFC has
embraced the twenty-year-old lining
out for his international side, with a
surge in demand for Poland flags in the
Mayo town in advance of Poland’s next
competitive fixture in February.
Kacper Palamarczuk’s rugby journey
started with Westport rugby minis
when he was just six years old.
The next stage of this journey will see
him step out at the Arcul de Triumph in
Bucharest on February 4th with hopes
of helping his native Poland gain victory
over Romania.
And when his playing career ends
many years from now, Kacper hopes it
includes an appearance at The Rugby
World Cup with his native Poland.
This ambition is paired with the goal
of winning this year’s Bank of Ireland
Connacht Junior Cup with Westport.
“My aim with Westport is to win the
Cup this season. It would be great to
bring it back home, while my main goal
for Poland is to one day make it to the
World Cup. It is very possible, especially
with all the young talent and amazing
coaching we have on board,” he said.
Those aims are certainly within reach for
the 20-year-old, with Westport into the
last four of this year’s Connacht Junior
Cup, while Poland is an international side
on the up after gaining promotion to this
year’s Rugby Europe Championship.
It was in that promotion push where
Kacper made his senior international
debut, starting a crucial game against
Lithuania last April when a positive result
was needed.
Discussing the experience, he said: “It’s
a really exciting experience to represent
your country. Going into my first camp
for Poland was a similar experience
to going into the underage camp with
It was with a Westport underage side
when he first got notice that Poland
was interested in acquiring his services.
“There was a tournament called the
Rugby Amber Cup that I attended with
Westport RFC in Poland. We ended up
“Everyone at Westport RFC is happy for
me and they are being really supportive,
with a few of my teammates even traveling
to the Rugby European Championship
against Romania,” he added.
