“ASK LAURA ABOUT REAL ESTATE”
Do you own a second home?
During the pandemic, second homes became increasingly popular—largely
because of the rise in work-from home flexibility. It also allowed people to go
on “vacation” safely, having their own private getaway. Owning a second
home, especially in the luxury market, allowed those homeowners to spend
more time in their favorite places or to enjoy different home features. A
Luxury home isn’t necessarily defined by price—other characteristics, such as
location, a view, or specific features and/or upgrades may put it in this
category… the things that make the home feel luxurious.
Our Reasons for Final Wishes
By: Dan Roberts / Roberts Rules
“
Who are you?” Those were the last words
spoken by the man starring at me for a very
long time.
That man was my father. It was March 2012.
Suffering from dementia, he remained
“a prisoner” at home, lying in a hospital
bed 24 hours a day. Compounding this
end of life nightmare, my dad required
full-time personal care.
I have absolutely no doubt that my
father never wanted to complete his time
on earth behaving like that toward his
family. And the thought of me possibly
following in his footsteps toward my sons
when my day comes horrifies me.
I readily admit that I am far from the
smartest or most religious person in the
room, so forgive me if I don’t understand
how a loving God would allow my dad (or
any “good” person) to suffer.
And like many of you, I also had the unfortunate experience of having
to “put their pet down.” This occurred a few years after my father died.
My cat of 15 years suffered a stroke, and I rushed her to the animal
hospital. When advised that the diagnosis was fatal, I stayed with her
while the vet tranquilized her to fall asleep and then injected the fatal
dose.
It was swift and sad, but in retrospect, the most caring, loving, and
compassionate event I ever experienced. My cat literally died in my
arms.
I remain dumbfounded how we can treat our pets with more love,
dignity, and compassion when it comes to end of life decisions. Believe
me, if my dad (and unfortunately later my mom) had that option, they
would have done so in a New York minute.
In September 2018, my Rana first proposed that The Vegas Voice
lobby the Nevada legislature to allow such “Death with Dignity.” When
we asked readers for their opinion, we received over 500 responses. To
my surprise, our survey showed 95-5% FOR such a law.
Yes, I recognize that the survey was unscientific but 95%?
We also received numerous comments regarding reader’s viewpoints.
Basically, it came down to two reasons why they would be opposed to
such a law:
1. Only God has the right to decide when a person should die.
2. If such a law was passed, it would create a “slippery slope” and
who knows what the government would eventually do down the road.
Although I understand and respect those who would sincerely
and vigorously oppose such a law, to me, it still comes down to an
individual’s choice. No one is being forced to submit to this proposal if
they believe that such final action is against God’s judgement.
However, for those 95% who wish to “take their chances with the
Almighty” why should a government entity say no?
Toward this end, over the past four years, Rana and I met various
national “end-of-life” organizations. We advised our willingness to
assist them in their efforts.
To my dismay, they merely patted us on our heads, pointedly told
us that “they were professionals and to let
them do it.” And if we “really” wanted to
help, how much money can we raise for
their efforts?
To say that we were turned off (if not
disgusted) was an understatement. The
Vegas Voice deliberately stayed away from
lobbying the Nevada legislature (and to
be honest, COVID also played a part) for
such a law.
But no more. And if those organizations
want to join The Vegas Voice in assisting
us, they are more than welcomed to do so.
It is our intention (just like we did
in guardianship reform) to do a senior
grass-roots campaign and petition drive to urge legislators to support
such “Death with Dignity” law.
But we cannot do so without your support.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU. Contrary to those organizations, we
are not asking readers to reach into their wallets, nor organize, protest,
and contact their respective Nevada legislative leaders and let them
You Gotta Laugh
By: Bill Caserta / Bill’s Blurbs
My Weekly Reminders:
1. Stop spending more money to get free
shipping.
2. My coffee is still in the microwave.
3. Don’t throw the box with the directions away
until it’s 100% done.
4. My glasses are on top of my head.
5. Just because it pops in my head doesn’t mean it should come out
of my mouth.
6. Don’t use your phone as a flashlight to look for your phone.
7. I’m never going to remember to do that thing later. Do it now.
Looking Back: One day you’re 21, staying up until 3:00 am, eating
pizza, and dancing like no one is watching. Then suddenly you’re a
Sun City resident eating kale, going to bed at 8:00 pm, and you can’t
dance because you pulled a muscle putting on your socks.
At the Movies: Two older gentlemen, Fred, and Sam, went to see
a movie. Minutes into the movie, Sam heard Fred rustling around. It
appeared that he was reaching under the seats.
“What on earth are you doing, Fred?” asked Sam. Fred responded, “I
had a caramel in my mouth, and it dropped out. I’m trying to find it!”
Sam told him not to worry about it - they could get him another
caramel later since that one was ruined by now. “But I’ve got to,” said
Fred. “My teeth are in it!”
Final Wish: When I die, I want a crank on the side of my casket
that plays the “Pop Goes the Weasel” song just to see who has the guts
to turn it!
And Finally: The good thing about having a bad memory is that
jokes can be funny more than once.

Words I Never Want to Hear Again in 2023
By: Susan Goldfein / Susan’s Unfiltered Wit
don’t know about you, but there are expressions
I one hears on an almost-daily basis that I find
particularly irksome; things people say that
robotically pop out of their mouths.
I try to be polite but it’s getting more difficult to stop from blurting
“Don’t tell me what kind of day to have!” So, I might as
well begin with the catalyst(s) for that snarky
reaction: “Have a great day,” and its derivatives
“Have a good day,” and “Have a good evening.”
If a relative stranger tells me to “Have a great
day,” how am I supposed to respond to that? Do I
simply reply “You, too.” That’s ridiculous.
I know perfectly well that the guy who parked
my car is not going to have a great day. We’re in
Florida; he’s sweating. He’s running around in
the heat parking and fetching cars for impatient
people who will no doubt give him a stingy tip.
Being instructed to “have a great day” is burdensome. One must
ponder about what extraordinary thing to do to make this day grander
than yesterday. If there must be a mandate, let’s stick with “good.” It’s
like striving for a B instead of an A+.
I’m leaving a restaurant at 10:00 pm and the smiling hostess wishes
me to “Have a good evening.” Do I look twenty years old and
about to go dancing? I’ve had my “good evening” in your restaurant
and it’s already past my bedtime.
Do I bother to tell it’s no longer evening, and a simple “Good night”
would be more appropriate? I really want to, but behind my smile I’m
gritting my teeth.
Speaking of restaurants, I’m sure this has happened to you. (If not,
tell me where you dine because I want to go there.) A wait person,
usually female, approaches to take your order.
You relate your desires, and she responds with an enthusiastic
“Great!!” You can almost see the exclamation points coming out of
her mouth.
Was the menu a quiz and I made the correct selection? Is she
complimenting me on achieving a good score? Can you tell me why
ordering a Caesar salad and a plate of pasta is a wonderous thing? I
find “Great” in this context highly grating.
“Hi, how are you?” A common greeting
upon entering a shop. Why not stop at “Hi” or
even “Welcome” because do you really care how
I am?
Do I really care to tell you? “Well, if you must
know, my husband left me, my dog has fleas, and
my best friend has an incurable illness.” But the
truth is not what’s expected, so you smile, and lie,
and simply say “fine.”
And how about politicians who justify their
actions by stating ‘because that’s what the American people want!” How
do you know what the American people want?
Did you waste my taxpayer dollars on a sweeping survey of every
American? Funny, because I don’t remember being asked. Arg!
And to conclude, honorable mention goes to “Follow your
dream,” and “Do what you love,” both of which, to my mind,
have as much substance as a fortune cookie.
So, let’s raise a glass to a cliché-free 2023. And until we meet again,
at least try to have a great day!
know your position (but of course, feel free if you want to do so –
including going to Carson City).
The truth of the matter is that most of
us are too busy, or too lazy or expect the
other guy to do that. To further compound
the problem, “numbers matter” and unless
there is a collective demand, it is so easy for
the legislature to ignore us.
Our suggestion is easy, effective
and requires no heavy lifting. We
also know from past experiences that it will
have an unbelievable impact on the Nevada
Legislature.
Best of all: It will only take you (less
than) one minute. As we have previously urged, simply fill out the
petition on the next page and mail it to The Vegas Voice. It will cost
you no more than a stamp.
And for those readers that are “on-line” go to our website home
page, (www.thevegasvoice.net) and fill out/send the petition.
As evidenced from the photo many of you
have done so – and for that we say, “thank
you.” But we need more – many more
petitions. Not hundreds, but thousands.
Assuming we get them, The Vegas Voice
(meaning Rana) will do the rest. My
Ladylove and yours truly intend to travel to
Carson City and hand deliver the petitions -
as well as testify before the legislature.
Can you imagine the legislators’ faces
if we bring thousands of petitions to the
hearings?
This issue is one that affects everyone reading this article. Sooner or
later (and we hope much, much later) we are all going to die. How we
choose to do so should be your decision.
As Publisher Dan set forth in his article we are
still collecting Final Wishes petitions for
the start of the Nevada Legislature 2023 session.
As the photo shows, we had thousands of petitions for
guardianship reform. Can we collect that many for
our new cause?
When I was much younger it wouldn’t have
occurred to me to endorse anyone choosing to end
their life. However, that was long before I witnessed so
many of my friends suffer, then die in many painful
ways. Per the telephone calls and emails sent to us,
many of you have too.
My best friend was diagnosed with an aggressive
form of cancer just a few months before she died.
I’ve watched helplessly as Parkinson’s, Lou Gehrig’s
Disease, Alzheimer’s, and other medical issues robbed patients of their
dignity.
Life as they once knew it was gone, and they had no hope as they
begged their God to take them.
I ask, isn’t it time that we, the patients, were allowed to make that
decision for ourselves?
Why is it a governmental decision for a terminally ill person to suffer
in horrific pain while they, (with the help of their physician) can leave
this world when they are ready by just going to sleep?
Of course, there are rules, as there are in many other states in which
“Death with Dignity” is now legal. For example, the
patient must request help from their doctor only after
a diagnosis that they are terminal and have no more
than a few months left.
Only the patient will be given the medication. No
one can request it for them since this must be only
the patient’s decision with no influence of loved ones.
If you believe Nevada should join the other states
putting such personal decisions in our own hands,
please join us in signing the below petition. You can
also go to our website (thevegasvoice.net) and send
it via email.
It’s June Cleaver!
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
For those of you who read my column (and I
thank you for that) you will no doubt recall
that I recently wrote about my
dear friends Tony Dow and Jerry Mathers. I thought it
would be fitting to also write about another one of my
favorites, Barbara Billingsley.
She will forever be known to millions of people
around the world as the mom, June Cleaver on the TV
show, Leave It To Beaver.
Before that show, I had the pleasure of playing her
daughter in a short lived (one season) 1955 TV show
called “Professional Father.” We did it live before an
audience every Saturday at CBS Television City in Los
Angeles.
It was a sit-com but unfortunately only did “fair”
in the ratings. Nonetheless, it will always remain one of my fondest
memories.
One of the reasons was Barbara. She was the sweetest, most loving
woman in the world. When the show was cancelled, she gave me a
beautiful gold necklace with a charm on it that was called “Thursdays
child.” It was a wonderful gift since I was born on Thursday,
Thanksgiving Day.
Barbara had been an actress since the 40s in mostly uncredited
shows. She was also a fashion model and had only a few credits to her
name when she was cast in “Professional Father.”
When she was later cast as June Cleaver, she
became known world-wide, as Leave It To Beaver has
been seen in over 100 countries. To this day, the show
lives on in reruns.
Barbara had always been self-conscious of what she
called a “hollow” in her neck so it was her suggestion
that she wear pearls as it would look better on screen.
Little did she know that she would ultimately become
famous for those pearls!
People will also remember her role as the “Jive
Lady” in the well-known movie “Airplane” in 1980.
She died in 2010 at age 94.
I will also be eternally grateful to her since she introduced me to
Tony Dow who later became my life-long friend. I am truly blessed to
have known one of the loveliest ladies in the world.
Until next time, remember, a smile can turn a frown upside down.
Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody
By: Renee Riendeau / Movie Revelations
Whitney Houston, from 1985-1995
was America’s Pop Princess. Clive Davis,
(played by Stanley Tucci), her manager and
mentor said, “Whitney reached a level of
stardom that might never be eclipsed. Hers
was a once in a generation voice.”
Whitney had stage presence, style,
winning charisma. British actress, Naomi
Ackie who played Whitney only sporadically
captured Houston’s mega watt appeal.
Written by Anthony McCarten and
directed by Kasi Lemmons struggled to
capture even a fraction of the electrifying
sparkle of Houston. Ackie reminds us of
Whitney’s talent as a performer but she’s playing an icon, not a human.
The film seems a “by the numbers” telling of an artist’s life and
offers little to the legacy of Whitney Houston. I was disappointed that
this was not like a biofilm but more like a condensed diary with lots
of entries.
This patchwork movie barely skims the professional highs and
personal lows that made up her tragically short life. Ackie lip-synchs
her heart out as the songbird legend, but Whitney Houston deserved
a much better movie. The film hardly ever entertains or impresses us.
In her career she released: seven consecutive number 1 singles; sold
more than 200 million albums, appeared in films, TV shows, sang for
Nelson Mandela, and paved the way for
black women to have their music played on
MTV and mainstream commercial radio.
A highlight of her career was singing the
National Anthem at the Super Bowl.
By the late 1990s her career had faded.
She performed belated comebacks and
occasional appearances but never repeated
her 1985-1995 success.
She married Bobby Brown in 1992 which
led to drugs and an unhappy marriage until
her 2007 divorce. Her happiest moment was the birth of her daughter.
Whitney had an extraordinary life and a legendary voice. She was
and is remembered as America’s Pop Princess!
Unfortunately, this screenplay lacks balance, focus, and structure. I
rate it 2 out of 5 overall (movie) stars.
Valentine’s Day Dating
Suggestions
By: Mike Murphy / Social Insecurity
Recently I received an ad on my phone
plugging an app for a senior dating service.
With Valentine’s Day coming up, I decided to check out the site’s
suggestions on preparing for that first date with a stranger.
Now, it’s not that my wife and I aren’t getting along, though having
tofu in place of bacon for breakfast occasionally could become a
sticking point. I was just curious.
According to the site, seniors have numerous options on where to go
for the first date.
Restaurants and coffee houses appear to be the most popular spots
mentioned on the dating website, with the XXX aisle of a video store
not surprisingly far down
the list.
Once you have chosen
someone to date and
where to go, here are
experts’ suggestions on
how to prepare for the big
event.
1. Rediscover your
inner glow. I’m not sure
what this is, or that I ever had it to begin with. But if it’s anything like
indigestion, I’ve got it covered.
2. Make a list of what you love about your body. Uh. . . this
one is tough. However, I do take great pride in, and am very protective
of, the three hairs remaining on my head.
3. Have three “Go To” dating outfits in your closet. I’m all
set here, except I have a heck of a time choosing between my red, green,
or brown flannel shirts.
4. Always take a bath or shower before your outing. Dang!
This is turning out to be more work than I expected.
While out on the first date, the site points out that nerves can result
in terse conversations like:
Him: How’s your salad?
Her: Good. And yours?
Him: Yeah, really good.
Personally, I see nothing wrong with that topic since it sounds exactly
like something that my wife and I discuss nearly every time we go out
to eat!
I guess that you could liven up the conversation by tossing out some
more stirring starter questions like: Who did you vote for in the last
election? What went wrong between you and your ex? Have you
ever had plastic surgery?
And if you are a man with a strong death wish, you could ask, “Are
you on a diet?”
Welcome to the Village of Positive Aging
By: Pat Landaker / Positive Aging
The Village of Positive Aging is a different
kind of place because it’s ideal - a utopia
where simply living is all that’s required for your
positive aging experience.
It’s a place where ownership of aging begins at
birth.
It’s a place where a mindset of hope, health
and happiness are encouraged. It’s a place where
aging and the aged are embraced and honored.
It’s where young people grow old with pride, not
disappointment.
The Village of Positive Aging is where you don’t
need to defend your right to age. It’s where old
age is respected and accepted and the wisdom
and knowledge that come with aging are highly sought after. It’s a
place where everyone embraces aging and always lives their best life
possible with intention, focus, and honor.
The Village is a place where winning a marathon at 85, doing 100
pushups at 90, or living and “aging in place” after 100 is the norm
and is supported, not sensationalized. It’s a place where your choice
and style of aging and lifestyle is perceived as something unique but
never crazy.
Life in the Village of Positive Aging is fueled by a belief in yourself and
the energy that belief creates. It’s where you manage your experiences
and expectations through self-awareness, self-respect, and self-care. It’s
where your sad days don’t cripple your good days and instead are used
as lessons learned.
In the Village of Positive Aging, your opinions
are accepted. It’s where diversity of individual
and culture are sought out, not kept out. It’s
where you’re encouraged to express who you are
and age in your own way.
It’s where “Senior” means you’ve paid life’s
dues and now you get to enjoy the rewards of
aging. It’s where the word “Senior” gets the
honor and recognition it’s earned.
It takes a Village to embrace aging in order
for aging to be embraced. And it’s in this Village that we all thrive.
Wouldn’t it be nice if it really existed?
Shut Down Those Puppy
Mills
By: Diane Rosen / Animal Magnetism
I remember it like it was yesterday - the day in
2008 when I learned that two Amish brothers who
ran a puppy mill in Pennsylvania, decided to shoot 80 dogs rather than
risk the fines they’d have to pay when they didn’t pass inspection.
Pennsylvania had just passed stricter puppy mill laws to insure that
dogs used for mass reproduction are kept healthy, nourished, bathed,
and properly exercised, or the owners would face significant fines. The
Zimmerman brothers found it easier to shoot those poor dogs, rather
than comply with the new rules.
The sickest part to me was the shock they expressed at the idea that
anyone would actually care about the dogs. To them, the dogs were
chattel - things to be sold for a profit. They laughed at reporters who were
devastated at the news.
Lousy conditions can make for unhealthy dogs. Those cute puppies for
sale in the window likely came from a lousy place.
They are adorable and deserve love, but the cycle has to stop. Puppy
stores get their “products” from mass producers of puppies. It bugs me
that they sell their puppies at auction or through other business deals, but
they don’t care where their pups end up.
Do pet stores vet their customers to make sure the pups they sell are
going to good homes? I doubt they’d turn down a sale.
Why not go after the puppy mills instead of the pet stores? Puppy Mills
fall under the auspices of the US Agriculture Department. Their resources
are spread too thin, and there’s no way they can keep tabs on businesses
that can shut down and move quickly in remote areas.
Our Clark County Commissioner, Michael Naft, is going to make a
huge difference in stemming the flow of puppy mill dogs in our area. He
recently led the charge to pass an ordinance that prohibits pet stores from
selling dogs, cats, potbellied pigs, and rabbits.
Pet stores have one year to transition their businesses, but thankfully,
the status quo will no longer be. Kudos!
Many people have difficulty talking to
individuals or holding their own in chatty
groups. Conversation should be a two-way
dialogue wherein a speaker and listener each occupy about half the
time.
Those who habitually don’t listen to what is being said, keep jumping
in with pieces of their own news, or talk non-stop, are not particularly
welcome as constant buddies. The same applies to anyone frequently
peeking at their cell phone or communicating with faraway contacts.
A true listener gives undivided attention to the meaning and intent
of the words the speaker is delivering - including the body language
accompanying them. To make the speaker feel heard and valued make
eye contact, or lean forward slightly, or nod to show you get the point,
or occasionally utter an expression of five words or less to signify your
understanding.
When you’re initiating the conversation it’s offensive to interrogate
the other person through a succession of personally invasive questions.
It’s safer to inquire about the other person’s hobbies, plans for the day,
or results of yesterday’s activities.
And if those pursuits match yours, it might be the beginning of a
long and compatible relationship.
look.
I loved the house from the
moment I saw it. It was across
from a lake, a two-story older
home with many large rooms,
a porch all around, with
French doors and marvelous
woodworking throughout. It
oozed warmth.
I desperately wanted to
work on the house because I
was afraid another designer
would come in and take out
all the charm in the name of
modernization. Happily, we
were sympatico and worked
together until the house was
perfect to both of us.
Jeanette, my client, was a gracious hostess and, like me, a tea
enthusiast. She loved serving tea from her antique tea pots, and
little desserts in hand-etched glass antique plates. We spent many an
afternoon chatting over tea and her delicious, sweet treats.
We exchanged recipes and stories of past gatherings and I remember
her making this dessert. It was a chocolate, fudgy sheet cake that she
cut into various shapes based on her theme of the week.
While I don’t do themes, I often make the cake, cutting it into
squares, rounds or rectangles, sometimes stacking and filling them
with ingredients, such as fruit flavored whipped or pastry cream, or
topping with frosting, depending upon my mood.
Here’s the basic cake recipe. Decorate as you will.
Fudgy Chocolate Sheet Cake
In large bowl, combine 2 cups each sugar and flour, ¼ tsp. salt and 1
tsp. baking soda. In another bowl, mix ½ cup buttermilk, 1 tsp. vanilla
extract and 2 eggs.
In saucepan, melt 2 sticks butter, add 4 heaping tbs. cocoa powder.
When melted, pour in 1 cup boiling water. Allow to bubble and
immediately remove from heat, combine chocolate, and flour mixtures.
Stir to cool, pour in egg mixture. Stir until smooth. Pour into
ungreased sheet pan, bake 20 minutes at 350 degrees.
Living Trust Concerns
By: Jerry Creed / Trust Jerry
“
Does your Plan prepare you if one or both of
you have to go to a Skilled Nursing Facility or
Memory Care Facility?”
These days, most homeowners are getting a Living Trust and rightly
so, because the Living Trust is the preferred estate planning vehicle. But
few are asking, “How does my estate plan help me handle with Elder
Planning or Assisted Living?
You see, when you buy a car and drive it off the lot, you’ll know if it’s
a lemon in a few days or months. But when will you know whether your
Living Trust is a lemon?
Probably years from now, when you (or your spouse) are ill, disabled,
entering a skilled nursing facility/memory care facility or pass away.
This is when you and your loved ones most need the Trust to work --
and when it’s too late to fix it!
I met with a family last week that is going to lose several hundred
thousand dollars because their Trust didn’t prepare for assisted
living.
Unfortunately, you may have been led to believe that all Living Trusts
are the same and the only difference is price. The truth is all Living
Trusts are not created equally!
You and your loved ones can’t afford to just wait and see if the Living
Trust you’ll get (or have) is a “ticking time bomb.” Now is the time to
find out and take the steps to avoid problems.
Learn why/how:
1. Many Living Trust plans may prevent you from qualifying for
Medicaid benefits and allow your estate to be wiped out by nursing
home bills! or Nevada’s Enhanced Medicaid Recovery!
2. If you’re married, how the wrong type of Trust can force your
surviving spouse to needlessly lose half your community property
when it could have been protected.
3. It’s important for your Trust to be able to adapt to the changed
situations and needs of your loved ones -- after you’re gone! - such
as unexpected financial setbacks, illness, disability, or drug or alcohol
problems! AND
4. How properly drafted Powers of Attorney for Finances and
Healthcare may remove the threat of guardianship, preserving your
ability to act and not involve the Court system. (A Living Trust that
merely avoids probate and estate taxes isn’t good enough anymore!)
5. How to preserve your ability to act and make choices to save your
assets!
6. How a “Blue Pig” can save half a couple’s community property
when a spouse dies, and
7. How a “Pink Pig” can save your house
Check the seminar flyer below and make your reservation
right away.
Don’t risk all you’ve worked for during your lifetime. A properly
drafted and maintained Living Trust is critical to you and your loved
ones’ well-being -- be informed, rather than wait until it’s too late!
“Red” My Lips
By: Sandi Davis / Fashion “Cents”
“
RED my lips.” I do not
mean “read.” I mean
the color red. February is
the month of red. Especially with Valentine’s Day,
love is in the air, right?
I am delving into the color “red”– particularly
in lipstick. There are so many shades of red! But
which one is right for me, for my skin tone, my
hair, my eyes, my outfit?
How do you choose your red lipstick color? It’s
tough, since there are many shades of red. Look
at Revlon, or Loreal with shades like True Red
to blue reds, orange reds, brick reds, British Reds,
on and on.
How to choose? First choose the formula base.
Matte? Shine? Lip tints or lipstick or lip balm?
For mature lips, it’s best to choose a moisturizing lipstick, like Loreal
Color Riche. Or use a lip tint which lasts longer. Then cover with a lip
balm to keep your lips moist.
A lip liner is a good idea. Keeps the line in place
and helps you define your lip shape. Also, do not
use dark lip liner, with much lighter lipstick. Not
a great look.
And it makes the lips look smaller. Better to
even use a nude lip liner, which will work with
both light and dark lipsticks.
And speaking of outfits, as I promised last
month, here’s my month’s color outfit: I will wear
a beautiful red dress with a draped neck, nipped
in waist and full skirt.
And will do so with a wide black patent belt and
my favorite shoes. The shoes, as shown here, have
lips all over them. Just perfect!
Have a great month and share the love with
many people. Pass it on. Red Kisses!
How Did You Start the New Year?
By: Linda Bateman-Gomez / Timeless Beauty
I
’m typing this from my bed, fully immobile,
with my left leg in a full leg brace in hopes of
avoiding surgery. Last month I tripped on my
cat’s blanket and crushed my knee.
You are probably wondering what this has to do with a beauty
column, but there really is a tie in.
As we age, whether through an accident or illness, many of us may
deal with something that leaves us sick, in pain or keeps us from doing
all the fun things we normally enjoy.
The first week of my injury, after understanding the seriousness of
my accident, my attitude was rather poor. My family was wonderful, but
I was feeling quite sorry for myself.
Then recently, I focused on how much I had to be grateful for. Was
this how I planned to start 2023, “No” - but is my situation better than
many others, undoubtedly.
I took a look at myself in the mirror and what a mess! I decided to do
what I could to clean up. I washed my hair, moisturized my skin, even
put on lip balm and pretty pajamas. Pulled my hair into a nice bun and
used my favorite perfume.
Now, I’m not saying I looked like I was ready to go out, but it was a
far improvement to what it had been. I not only looked better, but I felt
better. I wasn’t any better physically, but mentally I was.
As my attitude changed, I was able to see things in a better light. I
was able to see the positives and to make plans and arrangements.
I was also able to see my blessings clearer and laugh with my
wonderful family that was working so hard to help me.
February 2023
In a nutshell, having gratitude and changing my attitude not only
helped me feel and look better, but probably made things easier on my
family.
We often start the upcoming new year with big plans, but things may
happen that put a damper on those. Try and keep in it perspective and
focus on the future.
No matter how big the bump, as long as there is life, there is hope.
Love Conquers All!
By: Dianne Hahn / Back in the Days
On December 17, 1897, a baby boy was born
in Poland. They called him Daniel. Daniel
spoke Ukrainian, (no English) and only had a
few dollars in his pocket when he immigrated to the U.S. He got a job
in a foundry, shoveling coal into a gigantic furnace.
On September 29, 1898, a Ukrainian baby girl was born in Austria.
One of nine children, they named her Zophia.
Zophia Lewinsky’s parents died when she was very young. Her older
brother died when he stepped on a landmine (from World War I) buried
in their field.
Zophia immigrated in her teens. She also spoke no English and
didn’t know anyone in her new country. Immigration authorities
changed her name
to Sophie.
Sophie got a
job in a factory,
separating tobacco
leaves to make
February 2023
cigarettes. She
lived in a boarding
house.
Sophie was a
diminutive beauty
with dark eyes and
wavy brown hair.
Daniel, six feet
tall and muscular
from shoveling all
that coal, fell in
love with Sophie - but Sophie had many suitors.
One Sunday, dressed in his one and only suit and tie, Daniel came to
call. Sophie and another suitor were seated in the parlor on the second
floor of her rooming house.
Daniel invited the young man out to the balcony to talk. A man of
few words, Daniel lifted his rival up by his lapels and threw him over
the balcony.
“Don’t come back!” he said, sending his hat flying down after him.
The suitor didn’t, but others did.
A man of action, Daniel took Sophie for a Sunday stroll. They sat on
a bench to rest. Daniel scooted over next to Sophie. She moved, but he
did too.
Another move and she was at the edge of the bench! He asked, “Will
you marry me, Sophie?”
“Either I had to say yes, or land on the grass,” she said. “I said yes!”
Happily, Sophie was my Baba and Daniel my Dido. Incredible
grandparents, they loved and spoiled me. They lived with love in their
hearts for their family and their adopted country! Love Conquers All!
A former schoolteacher, Dianne Sebis Hahn writes for children too.
Presently, Dianne has eight books available on Amazon.com.
How Can We Help
Ourselves?
By: Liz Breier / This & That
friend who lives alone had a fall in her house.
A Even if we don’t live alone, we may find
ourselves in a similar situation if our partner is
not around.
If you can get right back up – good for you. Many seniors, however,
find themselves stranded in that “I’ve fallen, and I can’t get
up” situation.
Even if you are lucky enough to have a smart watch that knows you
are down and will automatically call for help or you wear a device that
lets you signal an emergency, or even if you are able to call 911, what
then?
Who will open the door for the EMT? Solution: a residential lockbox
a/k/a KNOX HOMEBOX. You can purchase them from the internet and
while a bit pricey it’s less expensive than replacing or repairing your
front door.
Only the police and fire departments have a key to open the box and
retrieve your house key. If not, you will probably end up with those
bruises plus a busted front door.
While you’re planning for this contingency you may also want to
take advantage of the Nevada’s Lock Box for important documents
regarding your care (NevadaLockbox.nv.gov). If you have any form
of Advance Directive (a living will, health care proxy or similar
document), they can be forwarded to the Nevada Lockbox.
This is an electronic registry securely maintained on the Nevada
Secretary of State website, which contains an electronic reproduction
of each document filed by the registrant. The Nevada Lockbox has two
filing components: the Advance Directive Registry and the Guardianship
Nomination Registry.
The Advance Directive Registry is a simple and secure approach to
ensure that your medical wishes are followed. A copy of your advance
directive will be kept confidentially and readily available to you and
your health care provider, when needed, 24-7.
There are so many unforeseen contingencies, especially as we age
and any system, whether a physical lockbox or a virtual one, can make
things safer.
Liz Breier is an ex-New Yorker who retired to Florida for 24 years
after service members returned home to a country struggling to
understand why America was fighting in Southeast Asia. It was a cause
Americans were ambivalent about.
While in office, President Bill Clinton visited Vietnam and stated,
“In our national memory Vietnam was a war, but Vietnam is also a
country.”
National Vietnam Veterans Day pays tribute to those who stepped up
and served with honor when called to an unpopular war.
An Honor to Serve My
Country
By: Chuck Dean / Vet 2 Vet
Mike Fairhart served as an officer in
the U.S. Army Transportation Corps. He
graduated from Washington State University in 1966 with a degree in
Arts and Communication, and an ROTC commission. His work in the
field of broadcasting continued until he retired in 2010.
VET2VET: When you went off to college what inspired you to choose
the ROTC program?
Mike Fairhart: As a youngster I was interested in all things military.
My great uncle proudly served in the Army in WWI, and my father and
uncle served in the Army during WWII.
Always wanting to follow in their footsteps,
I decided to enroll in Army ROTC while
attending Washington State University.
VV: What duty were you expecting as an
Army officer?
MF: I had hoped to be commissioned in
one of the combat branches, Infantry, Armor,
or Artillery, but soon learned that because I
wore glasses, I was not combat qualified.
Before Vietnam, I did attend the Jungle
Training School in Panama, but chose the
Transportation Corps because it seemed interesting and offered new
challenges.
VV: You were in the thick of the TET Offensive in, and around, Saigon
in 1968. How was that for you?
MF: TET was a difficult time. I was separated from my unit for 4
days at the start of the enemy offensive. Although I was with other Army
officers, who were also separated from their units, we had to organize
and improvise a defense in order to survive and eventually return to
our units.
Returning from Vietnam was not easy as well. Family and friends
avoided the subject, and because of the difference of opinions, Vietnam
was not discussed in my presence. Like many veterans, it was difficult
to talk about our experiences.
VV: What lessons did you learn at that time that you have carried
with you in life?
MF: The most important lesson learned was persistence. Relying on
my training, following my instincts, and not quitting until the job is
finished.
VV: Any parting words for senior veterans?
MF: There is honor in serving your country. Be proud of your service.
You are not alone, so rely on veteran’s organizations, and other veterans
to get through difficult times. Help is available.
Chuck Dean served as an Army paratrooper in Vietnam and
through that experience was led to address the many transitional
issues veterans struggle with. He is the author of several important
books for veterans. All can be found on Amazon at: http://www.
Brain Crystals & Psychic Abilities
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
Scientists believe magnetite in animals like
honey bees, dolphins, and homing pigeons
influences their ability to respond to Earth’s
magnetic fields. They know that peoples’ moods,
learning ability, anxiety, physical responses, etc., are
affected by Earth’s magnetic fields.
Although they are still unsure how our brain’s
magnetite interacts with the brain’s function, they know
elevated magnetite levels in the brain tissue are linked
to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
In 1992, it was shocking that magnetite, a highly magnetic
substance, was found in the brain and synthesized by our bodies. A
study in 2009 proposed that magnetite plays a significant role in our
long-term memory, suggesting that cellular components of the brain
communicate through magnetite antennas using magnetic signals,
receiving simultaneous information from different parts of the brain.
Now, an enormous body of research is emerging that shows essential
links between magnetic fields and cognitive function. Research found
that magnetite is an antenna for external electromagnetic fields,
including the Earth’s geomagnetic field.
Even more exciting is that research can now provide some
connections between our planet’s electromagnetic field and psychic
abilities. Although it may sound far-fetched, there is new evidence that
these crystals respond like little antennas connecting our brains to the
planet and our entire universe.
Neuroscientist Dr. Michael Persinger, Laurentian University (Canada),
has been exploring electromagnetic effects on biological organisms. He
argues that “all phenomena, including consciousness,
spiritual experiences and even paranormal events,
can be explained by physical mechanisms, and can be
verified using the scientific method.”
Some of his recent laboratory conclusions sound like
a sci-fi movie, where he’s demonstrated that magnetic
brain stimulation can create metal states conducive to
human telepathy.
Some studies observe even more bizarre behavior related to our newly
discovered magneto-reception telepathy. Two people sat in separate
rooms in one experiment, where an identical, computer-controlled
magnetic field surrounded them. As a light flashed into one subject’s
eye, the person in the other room’s brain responded as if they saw the
flash of light.
Our thoughts are amplified by our emotions and increased by our
actions. It is up to all of us to hone our electromagnetic reality if we
want peace within ourselves, our communities, and our world.
In Memory of Lee-Ann
By: Liz Palmer / NSG
We at the Nevada Senior Games are saddened
by the loss of one of our volunteers and
athletes, Lee-Ann Skomski. Lee-Ann was our
swimming coordinator for 2018 and 2019 and was a standout athlete
who wowed everyone with her masterful swim races.
And before that? Lee-Ann was one
of the world leaders in the Olympic
sport of Modern Pentathlon, which
consists of epee fencing, freestyle
swimming, equestrian jumping,
pistol (now laser) shoot, and cross
country running.
Anyone who saw Lee-Ann swim at her
first NSG competition in 2017 knew that
she was truly flying on water. She swam
in four races and won all four while also
winning the admiration of the other
swimmers in the competition.
As fierce a competitor as Lee-Ann was, the
most serious challenge in her life was when
she bravely fought a battle with cancer. She
was very candid about her diagnosis and treatment that unfolded over
several years and faced the disease with grace and courage. The cancer
ultimately took her life in early January.
We’ve all met people in our lives who touch us in some way.
You remember them for their contributions, for their dedication,
compassion, and talent. And if you’re lucky, for their friendship.
As a wife, mother, athlete, supporter, and friend, Lee-Ann Skomski
will be remembered for all these things. We were privileged to know her.
a mountain bike configuration.
Lisa has been biking since childhood, and she played basketball,
Colorado. “Cycling is such as relaxing, enjoyable sport,” states Lisa.
There are a lot of riding groups in Southern Nevada that will meet
at different
while doing this in luxury.
Tim uses an e-bike for his riding. Cycling with an e-bike, you can
work as hard or as little as you want. You get the same amount of
exercise using either a road bike or a mountain bike.
Lisa and Tim generally won’t ride with others. They are independent
of each other and will ride at different times. Tim rides around 30 miles
a day or 8,500 miles a year. Lisa rides 25 to 40 miles daily and clocked
5,000 miles in 2021.
The bike tours offer a different perspective of a place, versus being on
a tour bus, cruise line, or in a car. The incredible bike trip was the South
Island in New Zealand. Another exciting trip was on the Rhine River,
staying on a cruise ship and biking port to port.
Cycling allows you to see the world from a different vantage point.
It is relaxing, great exercise, and fun. It is a sport you can do alone or
with others.
You can do competitions, go off-roading, or have a great vacation.
So, go exploring in the great outdoors with the bike of your choice.
Every January, thousands of techies descend
upon Las Vegas to experience the newest
technologies at the
Consumer Electronics
Show (CES). This is the largest trade show to
visit Las Vegas, and is held at the LVCC, as well
as many other hotels.
Technologies range from senior health
care to artificial intelligence robots to flying
cars. We spent a few days (and 30,000-plus
steps!) cruising the halls looking for the
most interesting technologies related to the
automotive industry.
After our visit, we are both thrilled and in awe
of the future. With artificial intelligence and
autonomous vehicles as the standouts, we will
be using our brains a lot less, but our ability to be mobile, especially as
we age, will increase.
Autonomous vehicles and shuttles were prevalent, especially electric
ones that can move you around the city as well as your community.
There are navigation devices for the seeing impaired, and advanced
aids for those who are hearing impaired as well.
We also saw an experimental Pillbot drone you swallow that can
Lightyear Solar Car
By: Dan Hyde / Call to Action
Finally, a real electric car! Introducing the
brilliantly designed Lightyear Solar Powered
Car engineered and produced in the Netherlands!
(funny that we couldn’t have done this
in our country).
Imagine, an all-electric vehicle that
recharges as you drive directly from the
sun, has a range of 300 miles per charge,
and if needed can plug directly into to
your 110 home power outlets for added
charging capacity.
Currently taking reservations/waiting
list for production models, the estimated
cost is $47,000.
Are you listening Tesla? I encourage readers to peruse their website
”lightyear one” and assure you you’ll be floored by the technology and
the beautiful car design.
I’ve written numerous articles regarding the fantasy that the
existing mass production of plug-in electric vehicles by Ford and GM
is a failure in the making. The problem is that all of these electric
vehicles must plug into our very frail national power grid and use their
elaborate ancillary charging apparatus that drains power well in excess
The Future is Here
February 2023
of 110w.
No reasonable person can possibly think that our grid is in any way
capable of providing electric fuel to millions of our homes and provide
the juice to millions of yet to be deployed electric vehicle at the same
time.
It will take billions (if not trillions)
of dollars to upgrade the grid to
accommodate that kind of demand.
That’s not going to happen in the
foreseeable future.
This revolutionary design has been
termed Charging Reinvented as the
optimized solar roof and holistic design
means that the car can be driven for
weeks, even months without charging.
I know what you’re thinking. No, this
isn’t a fantasy, even though it sounds too good to be true.
Don’t take my word for it. Look it up! The car was introduced at the
CES convention in Las Vegas last month.
All of the attendees were blown away. Just like you will be when you
take a peek at their website.
community. He can be reached at: dhyde9@cox.net.
navigate around your stomach, and perhaps in the future do remote
surgery from inside. Science fiction for sure.
Automotive wise, our favorite feature isn’t here yet, but will be
soon. It’s from a U.S.-based company called
Sheeva.ai.
It has created a program where you can
automatically pay for goods and services
through your car. Pull up to the gas station,
pump your gas, and go on your way.
Your car’s software will recognize how much
gas and charge it to your preferred card. And
it works for parking, fast-food restaurants, tolls,
curbside pickups and more.
Another new automotive feature is from ZF, a
corporation known for making transmissions. It
introduced the Heat Belt, a heated shoulder
belt that will warm you up inside your electric
vehicle, and it helps improve driving range by 15% because you won’t
need the cabin heater to warm the vehicle, saving power.
CES shows that technology can help make our lives as seniors easier
in every area. We need to embrace it instead of fear it.
Heart of My Heart
By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness
February is “heart month.” What are you doing
to protect your heart? Are
you exercising and having a
healthy diet? Are you trying to “destress” as much
as possible?
Last month we heard much news regarding
heart attacks. This has brought to mind additional
information regarding heart health.
During the last few years, we experienced major
changes in our life - losing jobs, pandemic, eating
more than we should, hunkering down in our
homes. We have rebounded somewhat, but there
are still lingering items that we should be aware
of.
I admit that I ate more frequently, making trips to the refrigerator
more than I should! Without my constant daily exercises, I tried to do
walks around the neighborhood.
So now with all the stress of 2020 -2022 behind us, how do we protect
our heart? It’s never too late to control the binge eating and exercise
more.
For those who have not returned to the brick and mortar gyms, we
(as I have done from time-to-time) can partake in virtual exercise
classes. Virtual communication has become our way of life for many
and will most likely continue for a prolonged period of time.
Now I make just one weekly trip to the grocery
store, gathering up my perishables. I’ve begun to
cook and freeze meals more frequently. I’ve been
conscientiously making healthier meals.
When I arrive home, I cut up the celery into
bite-size pieces so that I can grab them easier for
snacks. Keeping apples on hand and peanut butter
makes for an easy snack.
If you are not into meditation, it could be a time
to start - even slowly. During the day, I turn off the
television, put on some calming music (thank you
ALEXA!), sit in a comfortable chair and take some
deep breaths. Even 10-15 minutes of this may help
to destress.
BE GRATEFUL - for whatever you have, not what you don’t have.
POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND HAPPY HEALTH TO ALL!
Zumba, toning and dance classes throughout the Las Vegas
Valley. She can be reached at zumbaqueen@cox.net.
Double Trouble - Covid Can Strike Seniors Again!
By: Crystal Merryman-Sarbacker /
Out & About
My husband Ray and I were having a quiet
afternoon watching TV and the interminable
US Speaker elections, when a news alert broke in with the latest Covid
information: “Seniors - 50 years of age and older - need to have second
Covid vaccine injections.”
I’d heard rumors about seniors who caught Covid more than once,
and according to most medical centers, there’s now a sub-variant
known as XBB.1.5, which is spreading around the country and is
especially dangerous to seniors. This may sound like something out of
a sci-fi movie, but Covid seems to be with us and it’s spreading.
Last year, countless seniors received their first injections to fight
Covid. But this year, seniors seem reluctant to have their second shots.
Although the vaccine is readily available at most drug stores, and
shots are still given at no cost (for now!), there may be little time
required for standing in line. A recent study by AARP found the main
reasons given for avoiding their second Covid shots were that seniors
were just too busy or had decided they didn’t really need the injections
after all.
Neither my husband nor I enjoy standing in line or getting
injections, but we definitely hate being ill. Last month we attended a
small get-together to celebrate a friend’s birthday, and even though
we’d previously received our initial Covid injections, we both awoke
February 2023
exactly 48 hours later with rip roaring cases of Covid. And we were too
ill to get out of bed.
Fortunately, we had good news. A quick call to our family doctor,
and he immediately prescribed the latest medications for us. We didn’t
even have to go into his office to be diagnosed. It took almost two weeks
before we were considered to be healthy, and occasionally we still have
unusual aches and pains.
The really bad news, though, is many medical scientists are becoming
convinced Covid can strike more than once and return without warning.
Plus, each attack can be more debilitating than the last.
So, you might want to continue wearing masks when you’re out and
about. Next to getting vaccine shots, it’s still the best prevention!
Viking River & Cruise Line
By: Stu Cooper / Happy Adventures
Sharon and I have been in the travel business
for close to forty years. We have seen all the
trends and innovations that have made the
vacation travel industry what it is today.
Without doubt, in our opinion, the most innovative and trend setting
company is Viking River and Cruise Lines. They have carved out a
contemporary/upscale cruise line that provides more vacation options
than any other cruise line in the world.
Viking River Cruises has made the wonder
of river cruising available to a vast majority
of “small vessel” cruisers. And they provide
vacations on just about every major river in
the world. Yes, I said in the world.
More recently, they have become one of
the most unique Ocean-going cruise lines
in the world. Their modern fleet of mid-size
occupancy ships offer “upscale” cruising as
well.
Their newest Expedition vessels are offering “small ship” luxury
cruising to the most exotic parts of the world. Antarctica and the
far northern regions of our planet are just two examples of Viking’s
expedition destinations.
With all this in mind we are happy
and proud
to announce
our next Vegas
Voyagers meetings
featuring special
presentations by representatives
from Viking River and Ocean
Cruises.
We will hold a meeting on Monday
March 20 at 10:30 am at the Sun City
McDonald Ranch community Center.
And our second meeting in Summerlin
will be announced in next month’s
edition.
At these meetings, we will discuss special
group departures and all the incentives being
offered directly from Viking. In addition, when you book your Viking
the inclusions that are a part of your Viking experience.
Travel & Fashion in
Bermuda
By: Lisa Kemmerling /
The Fashionable Traveler
Traveling for New Year’s has become a tradition
for my husband and me. The first time we
traveled for this celebration was to Paris, to see the Champs Elysée and
the thousands of twinkling lights that line both sides of the street.
Both times we took our then young daughter to experience this
beautiful city in winter. This year we decided to give Bermuda a try, in
search of those much talked about “pink sand beaches” and of course,
the Bermuda onion drop.
I started to think about what to pack and how warm the weather
may be. Flying in on day 1 we arrived in a rainstorm with high winds.
Fortunately, the rain
disappeared for the
duration of our trip.
Bermuda is a
beautiful island that
we had fallen in love
with 4 ½ years earlier.
As with all things
associated with the
travel post pandemic,
I went with a bit of
trepidation and was
hoping for the best
possible outcome.
I must admit this amazing paradise didn’t disappoint! Bermuda is a
safe country, the people, food, and experiences are incredible.
We booked two private tour experiences: the After Hours Food Tour
(highly recommended). It makes 5 stops during the tour and our guide
was instrumental in making sure we had the perfect drinks paired with
our food. The second, the 3 ½ hour history tour around the East End of
the island is perfect if you’re a history buff.
As for New Year’s in Bermuda… it’s a Party! Every hotel throws a
celebration. Dressing up for this night out is a must, so pack your finest.
Arriving in Bermuda we immediately felt the humidity as it’s very
high in winter and far worse in summer. As many of the locals shared,
“We don’t go outside much in summer.”
One of my favorite parts of traveling - learning about the Fashion
styles and what’s best for this warm weather climate. Lots of light
clothing e.g., linen slacks, sleeveless tops, and a light sweater for
evenings. Flat shoes since you will do a bunch of walking.
For the men, Bermuda shorts are very acceptable, even in a fine
dining restaurant. As Mark Twain once exclaimed: You can go to
heaven if you want. I’d rather stay in Bermuda.
well as finding current styles for both men & women. You can
Your Liver
By: Kyo Mitchell / A Healthier You
The liver is one of the most crucial organs in
the body. Located in the right side of your
chest at the bottom of the
ribcage, the liver holds many crucial responsibilities
physiologically.
It detoxifies many chemicals which could be
harmful to the body. It produces bile which helps
emulsify fats so they can be digested and used by the
body.
It produces albumin, a protein that balances the
amount of water between the circulatory system and
the fluidic space around the cells. The liver stores
minerals and vitamins, helps store and regulate blood
sugar, and helps support the clotting of the blood.
There are a number of ways the lever can be damaged. Excessive long
term intake of alcohol is one major cause of liver problems. Certain
infections, especially hepatitis, can damage the liver.
Long term or excessive use of certain medications such as
acetaminophen, amoxicillin, methotrexate and antiseizure medications
can cause irreparable damage to the liver, but exactly what happens?
The liver has an amazing ability to regenerate itself. The rate at
which it can regenerate is faster than the growth of any known cancer.
The liver, however, has its limits in terms of how much toxicity and
damage it can handle. Exposure to toxins and infections over the long
terms changes the structure of the organ itself.
Initially, functional cells of the liver are replaced
over time by scar tissue (liver fibrosis) and possibly
fatty tissue (hepatic steatosis or fatty liver).
Notwithstanding this level of damage, a person can
still lead a fairly normal life.
However, when the scarring and damage become so
severe that a large portion of the liver’s functioning
cells have been replaced by scar tissue (a condition
known as liver cirrhosis) the patient’s health is highly
compromised.
Yellowing of the skin and eyes, itching of the skin,
a rash over the trunk of the body, especially over the
liver, red palms, and prominent veins in the skin that branch out and
look like spiders are some common signs that the liver is compromised.
Bottom line: Protect your liver!
For those who prayed for a Beatles reunion,
those “prayers” were answered last month…
sort of. Beatles’
music was featured at the most unlikely
of venues: Henderson’s Congregation
Ner Tamid synagogue.
For nearly 25 years, a talented group
of the congregation’s musicians, dubbed
The Shabbatones, provided the music
at a monthly Sabbath service. Cantor
Jessica Hutchings, who assumed the role
of the congregation’s musical director
nearly nine years ago, was inspired to Photo courtesy David Weinstein
create the service after hearing a Beatles
parody performed by a Jewish rock
group.
“I was enchanted by the music,” she remembered. “You can feel the
heart when you listen to Beatles’ music.”
Spiritual music has always been a staple of the weekly Friday night
services. Since the first Beatles-influenced service that featured four of
the group’s works, the lineup has grown to over 15 songs this year.
Mi Shebeirach, the prayer to heal the ill, was sung to John Lennon’s
Imagine; the traditional prayer Ein Keloheinu was performed to Let It
Be. Among other Beatles’ music included in the evening were Lucy in
the Sky, Sgt Pepper, Hey Jude and more.
“The spirit of a synagogue is
felt when people are gathered for a
common experience,” Cantor Hutchings
explained, adding the Beatles service
“brings a larger community together in
our space.”
The Shabbatones group boasts nine
original members, according to founding
member Jay Poster who mans the band’s
clarinet and saxophone. Poster added
that trombonist/pianist Tracie Birch,
who relocated to California, made the
trip in to perform for the annual event.
“There’s a careful mix between a concert and a worship service,”
commented Poster. “This was a way to bring the membership together,”
emphasizing that the spirituality remained.
A near-capacity crowd attended in attire true to the later Beatles after
they abandoned the group’s earlier skinny ties, single breasted jackets
and white shirts for bell bottom trousers, headbands and tie-dyed shirts,
eager to have their photos taken against a Carnaby Street backdrop.
The Growing Season Begins!
By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening
February marks the start of the 2023 growing
season in Southern Nevada. You will see your
landscaping swinging back to life with new leaves
and flower growth.
The local garden centers will again be stocked
with new shipments of plants, shrubs and trees and
you will again start to work making your gardens
ready for the new season.
February is a perfect time to plant trees and
shrubs since the daylight hours and temperatures
will be increasing. As you begin to work, you may be
considering ways to both beautify your property as
well as attempting to conserve water usage.
Planting drought tolerant “xeric desert plants” may be a
wise choice. Fact: desert (xeric) plants can, if necessary, “tolerate”
infrequent irrigation, but they will certainly accept and appear to
flourish when given frequent but brief watering.
Xeric trees and shrubs such as Palo Verde, Mesquite, Pepper Trees,
and Yucca that are frequently watered will initially grow properly and
will continue to accelerate growth leading to tall, slender but very
fragile growth that will be prone to wind, root and heat damage.
Overwatered trees and bushes can be uprooted by strong winds and
damaged by extreme temperatures. It is best to give your desert trees
and shrubs infrequent but longer periods of irrigation.
This is recommended because the roots will travel to where water is
located. Frequent but brief irrigation leaves residual water in shallow
pockets near ground level. This water will evaporate
soon causing shallow root systems to dry out.
Deeper waterings create water pockets deeper in
the soil that are not as prone to evaporation. The
roots, therefore, will travel deep below ground level
in search of needed water, allowing these plants to
tolerate infrequent irrigation.
In addition, these plants will develop root systems
that are deeper thereby shielding them from harsh
temperatures and gusty winds! They will also have stronger stems,
branches, and trunks.
These xeric desert plants, when properly irrigated, will survive the
harsh summer temperatures and will not be subject to summer
dormancy!
Pregnant Tennis Match
By: Vicki Wentz / Vicki’s Voice
Sometimes, my head is the Kuwaiti desert of
creativity. But, occasionally, into that desert
someone drops a funny moment, as welcome as a
cool summer rain.
Such a moment happened last month, as I sat
at our local coffee place. And I’d like to thank the
adorable couple who rained it on me.
I had been staring morosely at my computer
screen for nearly an hour, writing and deleting,
writing, and deleting, when they showed up.
Fortunately, I have no idea who they are, and if
you recognize them here, please be discreet…I
don’t want to have to move again.
First, the young wife sat down near me, and
I noticed that she was pregnant - very pregnant… like that stage of
pregnant when if one more person says you have that “special glow”,
you’re likely to give him his own glow by, say, setting his hair on fire.
Her young husband joined her presently, and they sat contentedly
eating their chocolate scones, and then a “conversational Wimbledon”
began:
He serves first, a gentle underhand serve: “So, honey, this is nice. We
won’t have much chance to do this after the baby.”
February 2023
“Why not? I certainly don’t intend to stop everything I enjoy after this
baby comes, George, I hope you don’t expect that!” A blistering return
that whips past the stunned George.
A warning shot, causing his hair to flutter in the breeze as it passes
inches from his head. (I stop staring sullenly at my laptop, and begin
to smile – maybe I’ll write something today, after
all…)
George is shaken, but regroups, trying another
easy serve. “Course not, sweetheart. We’ll go out to
dinner as often as we can, I promise.”
“Dinner? I may be just a tad exhausted at the
end of the day, George. Staying home with a baby
is no picnic, you know!” A crosscourt return, but
George scrambles.
“I know, honey. How about if we go out to
lunch once in a while? My mom’ll be here to help,
remember?” A brave attempt, but right to her forehand.
“George, I’m not comfortable leaving the baby with your mother so
soon.” Her shot is deceptive; he doesn’t see the topspin and attempts a
feeble volley.
“Sure, honey, whatever.” He shuffles happily sideways to meet it.
“Whatever? That’s your attitude about EVERYTHING, ISN’T IT,
GEORGE?!” Her ball hits the line and streaks out of his reach, slamming
into the back fence.
He is bewildered, searching the restaurant for clues to this mid-air
change in direction, but finds no answer. (Meanwhile, I’m typing so
fast my fingers might burst into flame, and I’m wondering if there are
any chocolate scones left.)
It’s her serve now: “Anyway,” she sniffs, “I don’t even want her to
come until after the baby’s home, George.”
“Alright. I’ll call her tonight and tell her to wait a while, okay?” He is
increasingly winded, bounding all over the court.
“And I hope she’s not going to criticize everything I do with the baby.”
She’s clearly playing offense, getting as much mileage as she can.
Running hard, he attempts a weak, ill-advised backhand lob. “Honey,
Mom wouldn’t do that.”
She’s at the net, racket back, dancing into just the right spot, eyes
searching skyward for the approaching ball. “George, if you DARE take
her side once this baby is born, I will NEVER FORGIVE YOU!”
Smash! George must literally spin off the ground to prevent the ball
from rendering him unable to further procreate.
“Sweetheart, I wouldn’t! I’ll make it clear she’s not to criticize you!”
He’s perspiring profusely as he steps halfheartedly to the baseline.
“In fact, maybe we should tell her not to come at all!”
She steps to the service line, raises her racket, smiles, and tosses the
last bite of scone into her mouth. “Whatever you think is best, Georgie.”
An ace.
Game, set, and match.
