Ice swimmer clocks
two world records
WORLD RECORDS: Hannah Drury won two gold medals at the world ice swimming championships in France.
• By Susan Sandys
THE COMPETITION was as
hot as the water was cold, but
Hannah Drury still managed to
swim her way to world record
success.
The Rolleston 44-year-old
said four months of bathing
in her garage chest freezer had
paid off, as she arrived home
last week with two gold medals
from the world ice-swimming
championships in Samoëns,
France.
The medals were for the 100mbutterfly,
where she recorded an
age-group world record time of
1min 33.69sec, and the 100m
individual medley, where she
recorded an age-group world
record time of 1min 33.07sec.
“I am really proud of what
I achieved and I didn’t think
I would swim as fast as I did.
I certainly never expected to
win two gold medals in record
times,” Drury said.
Her training regime involved
sitting in the freezer filled with
ice-cold water for up to six
minutes a day.

Eleven per

hike leaves
tenants
struggling
• By Susan Sandys
TENANTS throughout the
district are feeling the pinch as
landlords hike up rental prices.
Trade Me property spokesperson
Gavin Lloyd said latest figures
showed the median rental for
Selwyn was $600 in December,
which was 11 per cent higher than
December 2021.
Rolleston residents have reported
on social media in recent
weeks of being told their annual
rent increase was up by $80 a
week.
One single mum was searching
for a two-to-three bedroom home
after she heard that day her rent
was going up $70.
“I have talked to the property
manager and was just told it’s due
to interest rate hikes and in line
with the market,” she said.
Another woman commented
her rent had increased $80 a week.
She also understood it was in line
with the current market rental
rate.
“Absolutely disgusting that
this is how things are for tenants
now,” she said.

SELWYN WILL get a social
agencies hub as part of a
nationwide network.
Social Development Minister
Carmel Sepuloni has confirmed
a tender process for a Heartlands
hub is under way.
It will be one of four new hubs,
part of a 23-hub network across
rural and isolated communities
in New Zealand. The other new
hubs will be in Taumarunui,
Taihape and Tūrangi.
It comes after Selwyn MP
Nicola Grigg wrote to Sepuloni
late last year, saying the district
urgently needed a social agencies
office that could be easily
accessed by people in the district.
“With the size and rapid
growth of our region, it is
unacceptable that people must
travel to Christchurch to talk to
anyone in person,” said Grigg.
“Selwyn is the fastest growing
region in the country, and the
minister has completely failed to
consider the size of our region.”
Grigg’s request to Sepuloni
was backed by social agencies in
Selwyn.
A survey she carried
out showed 86 per cent of
respondents believe there is a
need for a Government-funded
multi-service agency in the
district.
Grigg said this
week that while a
Heartlands hub
was a good place
to start, what
the Government

needed.

Bid to open up land for
1670 homes likely to fail
• By Susan Sandys
CARTER GROUP’S plans for
1670 residential sections on
the undeveloped side of Dunns
Crossing Rd in Rolleston are
likely to be rejected by the
district council.
Hearing commissioner Paul
Thomas has recommended the
district council decline Plan
Change 81 and Plan Change 82
which, if approved, would push
Rolleston’s town boundary out
to the west.
It follows the district council
last year adopting an earlier
hearing commissioner recommendation
to decline Carter
Group’s application of Plan
Change 73, for about 2100
homes in two blocks on Dunns
Crossing Rd.
PC81 would impact 28ha
west of Dunns Crossing Rd and
north of Selwyn Rd. It would
allow for about 350 homes.
PC82, which impacts 109ha
on Dunns Crossing Rd, Brookside
Rd and Edwards Rd, would
allow for about 1320 homes.
Thomas said in a joint recommendation
for the applications
released on Friday the plan
changes did not meet all the
requirements of the National
Policy Statement on Urban Development,
including that they
did not “form part of a wider

strategy.”
“In terms of the statutory
assessment of the plan changes,
I find that approval of the plan
changes would not assist the
council in achieving integrated
management of the effects of
use, development or protection
of land and associated natural
and physical resources of the
district,” Thomas said.
The district council will consider
the recommendation at a
forthcoming meeting. Generally
such recommendations are automatically
adopted. But Carter
Group may appeal the decision
at the Environment Court, as it
did for PC73. This decision was
still pending.

Long recovery for 10-year-old after
• By Susan Sandys
A SOUTHBRIDGE boy faces
a slow recovery after being
seriously injured by a lawn
irrigator while playing at
Southbridge Domain.
The district council has removed
all of its travelling roto
rainer irrigators from operation
and is investigating the accident.
Ten-year-old Jayden sustained
a depressed skull fracture and
bleed on the brain after being hit
on his head by a rotating arm of
the machine.
He was visiting the domain
playground with his grandmother
Angela Slade and eightyear-old
cousin Emily.
Angela said the lunchtime visit
to the park suddenly became a
life-and-death situation after
Jayden was attracted to water
around the travelling roto-rainer
irrigator in hot weather. He was
struck as he stood up after slipping.
Angela said at first she had not
noticed Jayden had wandered
about 15m away to play under
the irrigator on an adjoining
rugby field. As she unpacked
food onto a picnic table, she
heard “a horrible, horrible
scream”.
“That’s when I turned around,
he was just getting back up again
and the bar nearly got him again,
I’m like ‘Get out, get out!’”
Angela said while she had earlier
pointed out to the children
a single caution sign nearby
saying ‘Potentially Dangerous
Equipment’, this had obviously
not been enough to keep Jayden
away.
She had phoned the district
council to tell them about the
accident, and staff removed the
irrigator from operation. It was
now parked up in bushes nearby.
Jayden was in extreme pain
after the accident and began
vomiting. He was taken to
Christchurch Hospital by ambulance.
Mum Sarah Whittaker said
doctors at first thought he had
severe concussion, but they were
as surprised as she was when a
CT scan showed a depressed skull
fracture and bleed on the brain.
Last week he had a craniotomy,
where a 10cm long piece of bone
from his forehead was removed
and replaced with a plate. He
may have to have more surgeries
to replace the plate as he grows.
He was discharged at the
weekend, and is expected to
make a full recovery. But that
recovery will be slow as he
suffers the head injury effects of
fatigue, headaches, irritability
and light sensitivity. He will
be at school only part-time
throughout term one.
SERIOUS INJURY: Jayden was taken
by ambulance to Christchurch Hospital
after being hit by the arm of a roto rainer
irrigator at Southbridge Domain. A scan
revealed a depressed skull fracture. The
district council has since parked up the
irrigator (below).

irrigator accident
Whittaker said she was glad
to hear the district council had
removed all such irrigators from
operation in parks and reserves.
She said while the caution sign
had been pointed out to Jayden,
he would not have absorbed the
information due to a learning
disability and dyslexia.
“I don’t want it to happen to
anybody else,” she said.
District council group manager
infrastructure and property
Murray Washington said while in
operation the irrigator had three
caution signs “placed at different
points around the reserve to
alert people approaching from
different directions”
Washington said the district
council had the irrigators in three
locations, but had now removed
them. The other two locations
had been the Dunsandel and
Leeston reserves.
“This type of irrigator is
common in rural areas and has
been used by the council for
around 30 years without incident
to our knowledge,” Washington
said.
“We plan to replace them
with modern technology water
cannon type irrigators, which
will minimise any future risk to
the public.
“We are really sorry to
hear about the incident at the
Southbridge reserve. We will

investigate it thoroughly and this

He also said the council had
notified WorkSafe of the incident,
and WorkSafe advised it has
recorded the notification and
does not intend to investigate.

people to stay away.

West Melton resident Meg
Knowler told the Selwyn Times
she and her partner, who worked
in Dunsandel, had been looking
for a rental property for the last
six weeks after returning from
Australia. They were living with
her partner’s parents but wanted
to get their own place before they
had their baby, due in July. They
were wanting a rental property
for about six months as they
looked around for a home to buy.
Knowler said their budget was
$450 a week. Prices in Rolleston
were too high, at around $540 for
a small house and $670 for three
to four bedrooms. So they were
looking further south; however,
they had not been successful with
the three places they had applied
for so far.
Knowler believed landlords
were favouring tenants who
could stay for a year or more.
Trade Me’s December rental
price index released last week
shows the $600 weekly median
rent for Selwyn in December
was higher than the median for
Canterbury, which was $520, and
higher than the national median
of $580.
The index shows, with the
exception of Wellington, every
region saw rents climb in 2022.

Ray White Red
Chili Property Management
business
manager Cara Callister
at Lincoln said
rents in Selwyn had
increased at a faster
rate than the rest of
the country, mostly
due to three factors.
There was a large amount of
new builds, which attracted

higher rental prices than older
homes, a population explosion
in Rolleston increasing demand,
and not enough stock to keep up
with demand.
Callister said most annual rent

“The rental market is strong
and there are plenty of families
looking for new homes in the
area for a more suburban familyfocused
lifestyle,” she said.

the new trap library launched

The trap library is part of
ESAI’s Tinaku project. In the

removed 83 rats, 36 possums,
24 hedgehogs, a weasel, a stoat
and some mice from Ellesmere

The automatic AT220 traps
have proven to be hugely

Lochhead says the trap has

Currently, 83 traps are on

He has been using an

to attract the pests, as well as
specialised possum bait and

Fearn says the library is also
grateful for the support from
experienced trapper Dave Tilson,
who is well known in the district
for his pest control efforts.
Tilson has traps out around
his property, as well as five
neighbouring farms.
The ESAI trap library launched
in September last year with a

ESAI partnered with Pest

in the area and to try and

PFBP aims to create a pest-free

The trap library includes

a range of predators from rats

Suspected murder suicide of elderly
Three years after his
parents died in a
suspected murdersuicide,
one question
still haunts their
youngest son. Sam
Sherwood reports
SEAN FEARY was sitting at
home in Washington when his
29-year-old daughter called from
Christchurch. Clearly distressed
she immediately said, “Grandma
and Granddad have been
murdered”.
Feary tried to reassure her
and said she was wrong and that
they were fine. She then told him
about news articles that showed
his parents’ home in Christchurch
and reports that two bodies
had been found.
He told her to head straight to
the scene and talk to the police officers
there. When she arrived, she
called her dad again and he spoke
with a police officer at the scene.
The officer explained how
Feary’s father, Bill Feary, 80, had
called the police about 4am on
September 30, 2019, and told the
operator he had killed his ailing
77-year-old wife Jill, and was
intending on self harming.
A police negotiation team and
armed offenders squad rushed
to the property immediately.
After breaking in they found the
couple dead.
The district’s top police officer
said at the time the deaths were
an “absolute tragedy”.
Feary, speaking to the Herald
on Sunday for the first time,
says he has no doubt the couple
planned their deaths.
“To me it’s like a Romeo and
Juliet story. Mum couldn’t take
anymore and he couldn’t live
without her. She was his whole
life.
“I couldn’t have asked for
better parents.”
Sean Feary was born in
Wellington but the family,
including his older brother,
soon moved to Christchurch.
Bill Feary, who was the boys’
stepfather, raised them from
when Feary was about eight.
“Dad made me the man I am
today, he was awesome,” Feary
says.
“They always took us on little
holidays and things like that,
it was just normal Kiwi life. It

was great.”
Bill Feary spent most of his
career in broadcasting as a rigger,
before moving to Christchurch
and working for a flooring
company and then taking up a
job as a bus driver before retiring.
Jill Feary worked at a local
clothing apparel company until
she retired.
Sean Feary moved to the US
when he was 30, but kept in constant
contact with his parents.
Jill Feary’s retirement was
marred by health issues including
chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease – an inflammatory lung
disease that causes obstructed
airflow from the lungs – as well
as a virus that injured her heart.
This was followed by breast cancer,
which required her to have a
mastectomy in her mid-60s.
Despite the major operation,
she made sure she was able to
travel to see her son and celebrate
his 40th birthday.
However, she never fully healed
from the surgery, with complications
that would continue for the
last 12 years of her life. Near the
end, she had pneumonia.
Feary says his mum was too
stubborn to have someone come
and care for her.
“There was no way that mum
was going to have someone
changing a nappy or bathing her
because she went through it with
my grandmother and there was
no dignity in that,” he says.
“She was definitely suffering,
and I could tell when I spoke to
her she was in a lot of pain.”
Her health issues continued
to worsen and she had to visit
the hospital two or three times a
week.
“She loved the Christchurch
Hospital staff,” her son says.
“They did nothing but take
care of her.”
Sean Feary is adamant his parents
planned their deaths.
Bill Feary, who took on the
role of caring for Jill, became
more protective of his wife as her
condition worsened.

couple ‘a Romeo and Juliet story’
“He didn’t want her stressing
out, didn’t want her doing too
much. He did all the cooking,
he babied her, and he really took
care of mum a lot, above and
beyond.
“He adored her, she was his
soulmate.”
Bill Feary would often email
him with updates about his
mother’s health. The last email
was to inform him she had
pneumonia.
Feary got a call from his mum
in March 2019 asking him to
come home as she missed him
and wanted to see him. He did
so, spending a few weeks with
the couple, and he said aside
from the health issues the couple
appeared to be fine.
“Dad was still goofy as ever.”
Feary’s last conversation
with his parents – who had
10 grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren – was just a
“normal phone call”, he recalls.
“Mum and Dad were just
joking around.”
He was supposed to call them
the following weekend but
forgot. The next day he was on
the phone with the policeman
who was telling him about his
parents’ deaths.
“It was such a shock; I just
went numb.”
After consoling his wife and
children, he booked flights and

was in Christchurch within two
days.
Immediately after touching
down, he went to identify his
parents at Christchurch Hospital
before going to their home.
“The police were brilliant. I
got there and it was like nothing
had happened; they repaired the
house.”
In the bedroom Feary would
stay in when he visited was a
large bag on the bed. Inside
was his children’s favourite
chocolate, jet plane lollies for
him, socks for his wife, and
photos of his children. He is
convinced his mum left it all for
him shortly before she died.
“I know Mum knew what
was going on. Dad wouldn’t
have done that, that was Mum
through and through.”
A will was also left in the
living room.
Feary spent about a month
in Christchurch, dealing with
police and lawyers and sorting
the family home.
“I didn’t really have time to
grieve. My whole time there
was just dealing with what had
happened.”
He credits Victim Support
staff for helping him come to
terms with his parents’ death
while he was in the country.
Three years on, Feary, now
54, is still coming to terms
with what happened. A private
person, he does not like
speaking about it too often
and tries to stay busy, but
admits there are times when
the emotions just come to him,
seemingly out of nowhere.
“I miss them every day. I
will be driving to work in my
van and it’ll just hit me again.
Sometimes I have a tear and a
wee bit of a cry and I’ll be like
why? Just out of the blue. It’s one
of those things,” he says.
“I’m just grateful that I’ve got
great kids and my wife has been
nothing but supportive.”
Asked how he feels towards
his father, he says he loves him
and holds no ill will for what
happened.
“Dad was pretty healthy and
he just would not want to live
without Mum. I don’t know
many men that would’ve gone
through what he went through
and completely stick behind
Mum 100 per cent in the way he
took care of her.
“They loved each other so
much.”
There are still some
unanswered questions for Feary,
which he hopes a coroner’s
report will one day solve.
But the most important
question, that still haunts him, is
about his mum.
“I want to make sure my mum
never suffered and that she was
at peace.
“It would be closure because I
keep thinking about it.”

Farm worker murder: Chef appeals
• By Kurt Bayer
A CHEF FOUND guilty of
murdering his cousin’s husband
while he slept is appealing his
conviction.
Tony Grant Waldron, 29, was
found dead at his Gardiners Rd,
Rakaia, home, on September 18,
2019, after failing to show up for
5.30am milking.
Waldron’s wife Alana Jane
Bamber, 35, and her cousin,
Joshua Morris-Bamber, 28, were
found guilty of murder by a jury
in October last year.
Now, Morris-Bamber is appealing
against his conviction
and sentence.
An appeal notice has been filed
with the Court of Appeal. No
hearing dates have yet been set.
At the trial at the High Court
in Christchurch last year, the
Crown described the story leading
up to the murder as complex.
Bamber was furious with her
estranged husband Waldron,
claiming he had been unfaithful
with one of her bridesmaids and
alleging he had “beat the s***”
out of her days before the killing.
On September 17, hotel chef
Morris-Bamber went drinking
after work and then visited
Bamber at the Gloucester St,
Christchurch, flat she was staying
at.
They chatted, the Crown said
APPEAL: Joshua Dylan Morris-Bamber is appealing his conviction and sentence for the murder of Tony Waldron (top
right). Alana Jane Bamber (right) was also convicted of the murder.
PHOTOS: NZ HERALD
during the trial, for about 15
minutes.
Then, about 11pm, Morris-
Bamber sent a Facebook message
to Bamber, which was allegedly
seen by a witness, and said:
“What is Tony’s address? I need
to get some anger out”.
The essential piece of evidence
– that Morris-Bamber denies
– was not able to be retrieved
because both offenders deleted
content from their phones.
Morris-Bamber’s brother Isak
Morris-Bamber also set off in the
night to stop him from hurting
Waldron, but after his partner
begged him to not get involved,
Isak returned home.
Bamber also told Isak to leave
his brother to it, adding “better
one life than two”.
Morris-Bamber drove for
about 45 minutes south on
SH1 to Waldron’s farm, with
cellphone data and CCTV from
NZTA cameras plotting his
movements.
His car was captured passing a
golf course going in the direction
of Gardiners Rd at 12.56am.
The same car is seen passing
the same golf course again, heading
back to Rakaia, at 1.04am.
With driving time, the Crown
said Morris-Bamber had “at
least four minutes” at Waldron’s
house, “ample time” to go inside
and fatally assault him while he
was sleeping.
A post-mortem examination
suggests Waldron was struck
by a solid weapon at least three
times on the side of his head, ear
and neck.
Waldron suffered a fractured
skull – a 4cm x 2cm fragment of
bone was dislodged - along with
multiple cracks and a broken jaw.
Morris-Bamber left at speed,
stopping briefly to hide “forensically
important items” like the
murder weapon and bloodied
clothing that he would later move
again. They were never found.
Justice Nation sentenced
Morris-Bamber to life imprisonment
with a minimum period of
imprisonment of 16 years.
He sentenced Bamber to life
imprisonment with a minimum
period of imprisonment of 13
years.

Police assisting
FENZ after youth
trigger fire alarms
• By Susan Sandys
FIRE AND Emergency New Zealand
is working with police to stop regular
malicious sprinkler system activations to
Te Puna Wai youth justice residence at
Rolleston.
Rolleston Volunteer Fire Brigade
members are potentially being diverted
from other emergency callouts when they
respond to the false alarm callouts. Over
the last five weeks there has been a high
number, including 13 so far this year to
January 29.
FENZ recently met with facility
operator Oranga Tamariki on the issue.
FENZ community risk manager
Canterbury Dean Harker said personnel
were now working with police to educate
the youth responsible.
They were also working closely with
fire alarm installation and monitoring
specialists, staff at the facility and
Rolleston brigade members.
“This includes looking at the current
fire alarm sprinkler system and how it is
activated,” Harker said.
Last month Oranga Tamariki general
manager service delivery Parani Wiki
said there were sprinklers in every room
at
Te Puna Wai, including bedrooms.
“While the sprinklers are considered
tamper proof, there have been instances
in the past few weeks where young
people have been able to activate them,”
Wiki said.

ATHLETES FROM across
New Zealand descended on
Corsair Bay on Sunday for the
Canterbury Classic Triathlon and
Duathlon.
Environment Canterbury and
independent water quality testing
leading up to the event – which
doubled as the South Island age
group championships – showed
no contamination in the bay,
giving the Canterbury Triathlon
Club the confidence to proceed,
race director John Newsom said.
“It’s well known that you
should not go open swimming
for 24 to 48 hours at any venues
after heavy rain where there
may be storm water run-off. In
the last five years, there have
only been eight tests showing
contamination in Corsair Bay
and six of them are linked to
testing done directly after rain,”
Newsom said.
A wide variety of races were
held, including the aquathon
(swim-run) for children aged 5-9
and the main Olympic distance
triathlon and duathlon, where
the hilly route to Orton Bradley
and back was covered by the
cycle leg before a punishing run
around the trails and footpaths
between Corsair Bay and

Quest for answers to the
universe’s fastest explosions
SOLVING THE mystery of
what powers the fastest
explosions in the universe
is a passion for Canterbury
University researcher Dr Ryan
Ridden-Harper.
The astrophysicist and
postdoctoral researcher’s latest
project is taking him to the
extreme ends of physics in a
quest to uncover explanations for
the universe’s fastest explosions,
which space telescopes detect as
flashes or bursts that rapidly fade
away.
These types of transient
astronomical events come and
go so quickly that they are easily
missed and difficult to observe.
Ridden-Harper says while it is
thought exploding stars, massive
neutron stars and black holes
could generate the explosions,
no-one knows for sure what
powers them.
“I’ve always been curious about
how the natural world works,”
he said.
“After I first looked out into
space, the mystery and wonder
captured me. While all aspects
of astronomy are fascinating, I

found the idea of watching stars
in galaxies millions of
light years away explode
and change before our eyes
incredible. More amazing still
is the extreme energies and
physics that are involved in these
explosions.”
Ridden-Harper has been
awarded a Te Putea Rangahau
Marsden Fast-Start grant
of $360,000 to help extend
knowledge of the phenomena.
“I’m excited to be starting this
project, which represents the
culmination of what I’ve been
working on since I was a PhD
student in 2016,” he said.
“I’ve spent a lot of time
building the tools we need,
and now we’re ready for this
next phase.” The Marsden
grant will be used to kick
start a Canterbury University
astrophysics research group,
supporting a number of students.
Using novel analysis
techniques, the research team
will delve into archival data
from two space telescopes –
Kepler and Nasa’s Transiting
Exoplanet Survey Satellite – to
find previously undetected
transient events and create a
comprehensive survey of the
fastest explosions in the universe.
“Most transient events we
know to exist last for at least a
couple of days,” Ridden-Harper
said.
“With this project, we hope to
find ones that will fade away in
brightness in a day or less down
to an hour or so.
“Working with international
collaborators, we will then sort
through our discoveries to find
fast transients that occurred in
distant galaxies.
“We can then work with our
theoretical astrophysicists to
delve deeper into what could
be powering these really fast
explosions.
“In this project we’ll use
telescopes around the world to
follow up our discoveries. These,
combined with the Kepler and
TESS data, cover large sections
of the sky over a long timeframe,
making this the most in-depth
survey of its kind to date in a
rapidly evolving area
of astronomy.”

Keep an eye out in your emails and post: the latest rates invoices will be
arriving this month for the third quarter of the 2022/23 rating year.
Musical 'Month of Sundays'
hitting the stage
Sunshine and music will come together in Selwyn this month, as the district kicks
off a 'Month of Sundays'—a celebration of local musicians and bands.
The free, family friendly entertainment will be available every Sunday afternoon
from 1-2.30pm throughout February, and people are encouraged to bring a picnic to
sit and enjoy the show.
The performances will begin at the Lincoln Library Green on 5 February with the
Ministry of Sound, who are renowned for showcasing local talent. The Canterbury
Cellists will then take the stage the following weekend at the Lincoln Library,
playing everything from Disney to pop and classical.
The music will move to Te Ara Ātea on 19 February for the award-winning Rolleston
Brass. The 30-piece band will play a variety of music and musical styles for
families to enjoy.
A Month of Sundays will have its last performance on 26 February at Te Ara Ātea
with the popular trio, The Port Hillbillies playing a mixture of Bluegrass, Old Time
and Americana.
The Month of Sundays is part of the district’s action-packed Summer in Selwyn
programme, which features more than 60 different activities for residents to enjoy.

New members sought for Selwyn Emergency
Support Team
Selwyn residents who want to make a positive difference in their community during
an emergency are being urged to come to a free information evening at Te Ara Ātea in
Rolleston on Monday 13 February, 7–8pm.
The Selwyn Emergency Support Team (SEST) is looking for at least 10 new
volunteers to join the group, and is holding an information session this month to help
potential candidates learn what’s involved.
SEST is a group of community volunteers of different backgrounds and skills, with a
common commitment to supporting local communities when emergencies happen.
The team is part of the Selwyn Civil Defence response and is managed by the Council
Emergency Management Team.
Deputy Team Leader Angie Milner says SEST is looking for adults of all ages
and backgrounds.
“The most important things are that you are a people person and can stay calm under
pressure. We provide all the training, so you don’t need previous experience. If you
think you’d like to be a part of SEST, this information evening is for you.”
SEST has been running for almost five years and has been deployed to a variety of
emergencies. This included opening a Civil Defence Centre during recent flood events
in Selwyn, conducting welfare checks on the West Coast, and helping other agencies
during the pandemic to deliver meals and make telephone welfare calls to elderly and
vulnerable residents.
“We train every fortnight on Monday evenings from 7 to 9pm,” Angie says. “We’re a
very community-minded team and we’d really like more volunteers to join us.”
To register for the evening and find more information, visit selwyn.govt.nz/events
The invoice covers the period from 1 January 2023 to 31 March 2023, and is
due for payment (without penalty) by 15 March 2023.
If you do not receive your invoice, please contact our Customer Services team
on 0800 SELWYN (735 996) or email contactus@selwyn.govt.nz.
If you have recently moved to a new address in Selwyn, please phone or email
the Council to update your details.
Helpful tips to manage your rates
1. Check your eligibility for a rates rebate
If your income has recently changed, you may be eligible for a rebate
through the Government’s Rates Rebate Scheme.
The scheme provides a rebate of up to $700. It is calculated on your
household income, the amount of rates you are charged, and the number of
dependents you have. You must have lived at the property at the start of the
rating year (1 July 2022).
To apply for the Rates Rebate Scheme, visit Council’s main office in
Rolleston, or arrange an appointment at the Darfield, Leeston or Lincoln
Library and Service Centres.
2. Pay by direct debit
Never miss a payment deadline by setting up direct debit payments for your
property and water rates. Direct debit allows the Council to deduct regular
payments from your bank account to pay your rates, on a schedule that
suits your budget. You can arrange your payments to be weekly, fortnightly,
monthly or quarterly.
To set up direct debit, visit selwyn.govt.nz/rateseasypay (for property rates)
and selwyn.govt.nz/watereasypay (for water rates). Alternatively, pick up a
direct debit form from the Council offices or our Library and
Service Centres.
3. Get your rates by email
Reduce paper and be more environmentally friendly by signing up to
receive your rates invoices by email. Setting it up is easy. Just visit
selwyn.govt.nz/change-your-details to update your preferred method.
Driver Mentor programme celebrates
students’ success
The Community Driver Mentor Programme (CDMP) has celebrated the
success of eight Selwyn students receiving their restricted licence.
The programme helps new drivers obtain their restricted or full licence, by
overcoming barriers stopping them from learning how to drive, such as cost
and access to a vehicle or lessons.
The Council provides funding for Proactive Drive Charitable Trust to run the
programme in Selwyn.
The CDMP matches a learner driver with a mentor to practice driving skills
taught at Proactive Drive.
Summer
Selwyn
Tim Hartnell, Proactive Drive’s Programme Manager says, “Mentors are
integral to the success of CDMP and we are very grateful for the time and
personal cost our mentors donate so learner drivers can become better, safer
drivers for life.”

The bond between learner and mentor is special and friendships are
often forged.
At the Selwyn graduation at Te Ara Ātea, the students showed their
appreciation for the programme and thanked their mentors.
Graduate, Frederick Toetoe says getting his restricted licence has improved
his self-esteem, motivation and given him more freedom. Having moved from
the North Island, he says the experience helped him to navigate different areas
in Selwyn and Christchurch.
“It has increased my ability to get a job and go to seminars. It is so much
quicker and easier to get to places as I don’t have to wait for buses and it also
means that I can spend more time with my whānau.”

BACKYARD CRITTERS
Legal Matters
It’s a matter
of Minutes vs
Resolutions
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology
(insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces
a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His
column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the
variety of living things around us. Check out the full list
of invertebrates found at www.inaturalist.org/projects/

Larvae of the

Muehlenbeckia
complexa vine,
planted to
attract copper
butterflies.
While some see a subtle semantic
difference, others see the
important distinction between
minutes and resolutions. Accurate
resolutions are essential in
demonstrating appropriate
standards of trust management
and therefore where a resolution
is inaccurate, the trustees’ position
can be compromised.
In the context of Trusts, the term
minutes and resolutions are often
used interchangeably. However,
there is a difference that trustees
should be aware of:
Minutes, more commonly referred
to in the context of companies,
generally provide a formal
record of the meeting, including
the attendees, the documents
presented, and what was decided.
In comparison, resolutions are
a record of the decision that the
trustees have made regardless of
whether the decision was made at
a formal meeting.
It is likely that at the time your
Trust was established, the lawyer
acting for you recommended that
the Trustees of the Trust hold
an annual trustee meeting. The
minutes of this meeting should be
recorded, and any decisions made
at the annual trustee meeting
should be recorded in Trustee
resolutions. These resolutions may
be useful evidence if the Trust’s
validity is ever questioned.
With a growing number of
challenges brought against trusts,
and the Trusts Act 2019 bringing
increased responsibility for
trustees, the need to demonstrate
proper decision making is
increasingly valuable.
Where our specialist Trust
Management company, TP
Trustees, is working with you, you
have nothing to worry about in that
we will be in contact regarding an
annual trustee meeting, and will
prepare all required documents
for you. If TP Trustees is not a
trustee of your Trust, we can
still help run the annual trustee
meeting, prepare the required
documentation, provide advice,
and assist with any other Trust
related matter that arises.
We provide critical support to
trustees, enabling them to perform
their duties confidently to best
practice standards. We are always
able to answer your ongoing
questions and offer additional
services as required. Get in
contact with us for a no-obligation
consultation
Like a moth to the vine
I LIKE growing native plants in my
backyard because most native plants
attract one or more species of native moth
or butterfly that rely on them for food.
I have been growing a few specimens of
Muehlenbeckia complexa, an attractive
small creeping vine that can be observed
growing outside the Lincoln Library on
Gerald St, to attract the beautiful copper
butterfly.
Unfortunately, I have not observed a
single specimen of the copper butterfly
at home yet, but have seen several on the
outskirts of Lincoln.
The good news is that I have attracted a
large moth called Bityla defigurata whose
larvae also feed on the vine. This is an
endemic moth found throughout New
Zealand where Muehlenbeckia complexa
or Muehlenbeckia australis grows.
The moth is 20mm long, brown with
darker brown head, long mane-like hair
on the thorax and usually striped legs.
So, plant some Muehlenbeckia
complexa and you may be luckier than
me in attracting copper butterflies, but
you will be creating a stepping stone to get
them into our gardens.

‘This is it’ – Sprintcar drivers rapt to
• By Allan Batt
THIS WEEKEND’S
New Zealand Sprintcar
Championship at Ruapuna
Speedway has attracted 46
competitors – the second largest
in the 52-year history of the
event – with Selwyn drivers
poised to make an impact.
Former winner Jamie Duff has
been somewhat inconsistent this
summer, showing lightening fast
pace but having a string of minor
mechanical issues. Last weekend
the Halswell resident returned
to form, finishing second in the
New Zealand Sprintcar Grand
Prix at Cromwell, but he is under
no illusions how tough this
weekend’s racing will be.
The 32-year-old is keen to grab
another national championship
win, but said it’s a tough proposition.
“You really need everything to
go your way. The 10-lap heat races
will be tough, and every point
on offer is vital. One mechanical
issue, an untimely flat tyre or
getting caught up in someone
else’s crash can make it a tough
road into the finals, but we have
found plenty of speed in the car,
and with the next nationals in
Christchurch being six or seven
years away we really want to give
this a good crack.”
A 30-year veteran, Southbridge
Speedway driver Dave Kerr has
made the switch to sprintcars
and is upbeat about taking part.
Said Kerr: “(Sprintcars) are
big fields, they are big powerful
cars to drive, and a hell of a buzz
too. There is a real neat bunch of
people involved in the class too.
Most of my team were ready for
a change and a challenge – this
is it.”
Early in his career Kerr won
the national minisprint championship,
before moving up into
the powerful midget cars. He
went on to become the most
successful South Island driver in
that section of all time.
Ruapuna club president Rob
Roxburgh is confident that
despite only two South Islanders
winning the championship in
the past 37 years – Bruce Hobbs
in 1986, and Duff in 2015 – there
is enough ability in the mainland
ranks to get onto the podium.
“There is no doubt that the
North Islanders have a slight upper
hand in equipment, and they
are all battle hardened following
an international series up there
in December, but our guys have
also been primed by recent War
of the Wings Series races and I
think it’s going to be a very tight
contest.”
One driver who has returned
‘home’ after spending most of
the summer racing in Auckland
is Prebbleton’s Matthew Leversedge.
He says the northerners
may not have the advantage
they normally do.
PSYCHED: Hometown hero
Jamie Duff is keen to wow
a big Ruapuna crowd again
this weekend.

FILES
“The weather up north has
made it a really disrupted campaign.
We are rapt to be back
at Ruapuna. I’m pretty familiar
with how the track changes as
the two nights of racing go on.
“A national championship is a
real step up from all other races
in the country. Every time you
hit the track at a nationals is important.

be back at Ruapuna
Other drivers who have
showed great form recently
include Prebbleton’s Caleb
Baughan, Rolleston’s Steve
Duff, and Jayden Dodge
and Connor Rangi from
Christchurch.
Roxburgh said that all have
a great chance of making the
finals.
“They are all young and
fast. Several years ago Connor
was the second top qualifier
for the championship at
Cromwell. He registers to his
old hometown of Nelson but
he’s put in plenty of laps at
Ruapuna.
“I think he has the
temperament to do well and
he is being mentored by
American Jonathan Allard.
He’s really talented. We know
that Caleb and Steve won’t be
left wondering. They will give
it there all while Jayden was
very unlucky to be stripped of
third place in last weekends
Grand Prix on a technical
issue. I wouldn’t write these
guys off.”
Roxburgh said three years
of planning has gone into
making it a memorable
occasion.
“We are lucky enough to
have two Americans and 18
North Islanders headed our
way. The V8 powered class
is gaining momentum all
around New Zealand - the
fans love seeing these 800-900
horsepower cars battling
around the 400-metre track.
“We are the only track in
the country where sprintcars
are considered to be ‘the main
class’ and I think that’s why
our championship has such a
strong draw with the teams,”
he said.
• The championship will
be held on Saturday and
Sunday, starting at 6pm.

Folklore causes
upset in the
Premier Mares
• By Joshua Smith
IT WAS A night of upsets at
Addington Raceway on Friday,
headlined by Folklore in the
Gr.2 Garrards ‘Premier Mares’
Championship Mobile Pace.
The Jonny Cox-trained and
driven seven-year-old paid $44.10
to win the night’s 1980m feature
and did it in emphatic style, cruising
away to a comfortable 6-1/4
length victory.
“She has got a good turn of foot,
but it just helps when they are
going hammer and tongs up front
and she was able to sit off the speed
and had one run at them,” Cox
said.
“She got the run to suit and
everything worked out with the favourites
going pretty hard up front.
We were just in the right spot at the
right time. You never expect to win
those sort of races like that, but
everything played into our favour.”
It was Folklore’s first group
victory and Cox said it was just
reward for the consistent pacer.
“She has raced the nicer mares
over the last couple of seasons and
she always tries so hard,” he said.
Cox has now set his sights
on loftier targets, with Folklore
returning to Addington in a
fortnight to contest the Gr.1 Fahey
Fence Hire (51st) NZ Standardbred
Breeders’ Stakes (2600m).

WHEN BEN Waldron reached
the biggest milestone of his
career at Methven on Sunday he
could see the funny side of it.
“That was the slowest century
since Geoff Boycott,” said
Waldron of his 100th career
training success.
Boycott is a famous former
England cricketer, known for
his notoriously slow scoring
rate, and Waldron has taken 27
years of training to get to three
figures.
But in reality it is a heck of an
effort as he has rarely trained
big numbers or lined up a lot of
horses in a season.
And he started 2023 with a
roar. Penny Weight’s win in the
third race at Methven was his
third winner from just 10 starts
so far this term.
“Things are going pretty
well at the moment,” said the
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Waldron notches up a century
likeable 50-year-old.
“And I reckon this mare can
continue that. She has a bit of
ability and she isn’t finished yet.”
Waldron says driver Matty
Williamson shares that opinion
and you can see why after Penny
Weight overcame missing
away early to run down leader
Beaudiene Quick Step for her
first career win.
Waldron trains 12 horses at
present and, with his flying start
to the year, could be on track
to challenge his personal best

2009. He rates his best horse
as Mr Molly who won 14 of
his 57 starts to make it to open
class.
“He was my best and was a
really good horse but I am still
enjoying the training so I’ll keep
at it.”
Waldron’s milestone was the
highlight of a Methven meeting
that saw the handy mare
Champagneandwine bolt away
with the main fillies and mares
pace while Just Holla won the
handicap pace.
The big trot saw the Lawrence
McCormick trained and driven

Tangata by a length after both

Diversely delicious Buddha bowls
To have a healthy body we
need a diet of different
foods. Hagar Ozri gets
creative with Buddha
bowls, an easy way to
bring your ingredients
together for a taste delight
Job’s tears, shiitake and
tofu Buddha bowl with
tamari and ginger sauce
Ingredients
1 cup Job’s tears
200g block of tofu (firm or soft,
but not silky tofu)
1 packet of sliced dried shiitake
or 8 whole fresh — sliced, (2
mushrooms per serve)
1 broccoli, divided into florets
3cm finger of fresh ginger
Fresh coriander
Tamari (wheat-free naturally
brewed soy sauce)
Sprouts (Mung bean, alfalfa,
broccoli or pea sprouts)
Chilli (optional)
Directions
To cook Job’s tears, place in a
medium-sized pot, rinse in cold
water then toast the grains in the
pan, top up with water at least
1cm above the grains and bring
to the boil with the lid on.
Once boiling, turn heat to
med/low (check that it is not too
low, so the grain is still cooking).
ORGANIC: To prepare the Buddha bowls, cook and chop
all the different components and ingredients in advance
then put it all together. PHOTOS: GERARD O’BRIEN
Continue to cook on low for 40-
50 minutes until the grains are al
dente.
To prepare the tofu, take the
tofu out of its packet, drain the
water, wrap in a tea towel and set
aside.
Prepare the marinade by
combining ⅓ cup of water, ⅓
cup tamari soy sauce, 4 slices of
fresh ginger and 1 clove garlic.
Cut the tofu into cubes and
shallow-fry in a hot pan. When
crispy on all sides pop tofu into
the marinade while still hot.
Drain the shiitake, conserving
the water, and place in the pan
you used for the tofu. Add the
soak-water a little at a time,
keeping the mushrooms covered.
Cook until tender and set aside.
Prepare the sauce by using the
marinade from the tofu, whisk it
with a little sesame oil.
Dry-roast sunflower seeds,
pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds
for toppings.
Cut the broccoli into
individual florets, steam, and set
aside.
Now assemble the Buddha
bowl. First place the grain on
the bottom of the bowl and pile
it a little more in one half of the
bowl so it is visible when all
other ingredients are added.
Place the broccoli next to
the mound of grain, then place
the tofu and shiitake. Top with
sprouts and the seeds, drizzle
with some sauce, saving some
extra to top-up as you eat at the
table.
Broad bean and millet
Buddha bowl with harissa
tahini sauce
Ingredients
1 cup hulled millet
⅔ cup broad beans – shelled
and steamed
⅔ cup steamed edamame
⅛ cup olive oil
1 tomato cubed, 1 avocado
peeled and cubed, ½ red onion
thinly sliced. Mix and season
with olive oil, salt and pepper.
2 Tbsp tahini
1 Tbsp of lemon juice
½ tsp salt
1 tsp harissa
Some fresh basil, chopped
Directions
Cook the millet: Place in a
medium sized saucepan, cover
with water (1cm over the grain)
and bring to the boil. Turn the
heat down and simmer with the
lid tilted until water has been
soaked up. Turn heat off, place
the lid on and set aside for 10
minutes.
Mix the edamame and broad
beans with a little olive oil and
salt and pepper.
To make the sauce, place
tahini and lemon juice and
salt in a small bowl, add ⅛ cup
water and whisk to make a
paste. Keep adding spoonfuls of
water to create a smooth sauce
consistency. Add the harissa and
taste – add salt if needed.
Assemble the bowl, starting
with the millet. Add the beans
on one side and the avocado and
tomato salad on the other. Top
with tahini sauce and sprinkle
with fresh basil.

Create an emergency plan for
your farm and livestock
Summer is a time where fire risk is at
its highest. Do you have a plan in place
to evacuate your livestock in case of
emergency?
Fire and Emergency NZ’s website,
www.checkitsalright.nz, says that it’s
important to include pets, domestic
animals and livestock in your planning for
emergencies, including fires.
The Ministry for Primary Industries
(MPI) offers a checklist to help create an
emergency plan for pets and livestock. Your
emergency plan should cover any major
disasters that could affect your family, farm
or workplace.
MPI’s website, www.mpi.govt.nz, suggests
you discuss your plan, record it, and
practice it with your family and co-workers,
and keep it where it can easily be seen in
the home and/or in a dairy shed, stable or
shearing shed. The site also offers a series
of PDF checklists for varying emergency
events such as a plan for pets and animals
affected by fire, earthquake, flood,
snowstorm, heat wave, volcanic eruption
and drought.
During times of emergency, you can
also contact your local Civil Defence or,
for farmer support, contact the Rural
Support Trust on 0800 787 254
(0800 RURAL HELP).
Fire safety tips for livestock
• For housed animals, maintain a safety zone around structures, including regular
mowing, removing dead trees and clearing brush.
• Protect your assets by keeping flammable materials away from farm buildings.
• Protect your fences from fire by keeping grass away. Spray herbicide in late winter up to
a metre either side of the fence, stifling grass growth and reducing fire-risk.
• Never store damp hay, and regularly check it between 2-7 weeks after baling. Damp or
incorrectly cured hay can spontaneously combust. Don’t store it next to animals or farm
equipment.
• Have a livestock evacuation plan ready in advance.
• In case of fire, if you can stay on your property, check all animals are contained and that
fences have not been destroyed by fire. Consider opening gates within your property to
allow stock easy access to safe ground. Do not open gates onto roadways or cut roadside
fences. Make sure your animals have access to clean feed and water in their new contained
space until they can be returned to their paddocks.

GARDENING
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Time to add compost and manure
Vegetables
In all but the coolest areas,
radishes sown now will not
thrive, tending to bolt to seed,
even when the soil is kept moist,
and those that do mature being
unacceptably sharp in flavour.
To add a little bite to salads, use
nasturtium leaves and flowers,
or grow some mustard streaks
(Brassica juncea), which grow
very rapidly and if to be eaten
fresh are best young. Older plants
can be used in stir-fry mixes.
Onion plants can have their tops
bent over to assist bulb swelling.
Crops sown in autumn will
be almost ready for pulling. If
harvested in hot, settled weather,
they should be well-ripened and
suitable for long storage. Thickstemmed
bulbs will probably not
keep well, so keep them aside for
immediate use.
Liquid manure assists most
crops. Make your own by tying
a sack filled with sheep, horse,
cow or poultry manure and
suspending it in water for a few
days. One kilogram of fresh
manure to five litres of water
is a suitable mixture. Excellent
liquid manure can also be
made with seaweed and is good
for silverbeet, asparagus and
cabbages.

greens not growing as fast as they
should.
Early potatoes can be lifted as
the foliage yellows. Once potatoes
are well-matured, a combination
of rain and warm soil could
prompt new growth, spoiling
the crops quality and storage
properties. Brussels sprouts may
need to be staked to prevent those
in exposed positions twisting in
the wind.
Spring cabbages are best
when harvested early. Make one
sowing at the end of January and
another two weeks later. Grow
in a seed tray or make a seed
bed in a sheltered spot in semishade.
Enrich the soil with some
fine compost. Sow seed thinly
in 50mm-deep drills and cover
firmly. Transplant the seedlings
when big enough to handle.
Cabbage aphis and white
butterfly caterpillars go on the
attack at this time of year. Protect
seedlings with derris dust or spray
with soapy water.
Flowers
The madonna, or true
christmas lily (Lilium candidum),
will have finished flowering by
now. Cut the old flower stems
off at ground level and destroy
to prevent the spread of botrytis.
Unlike almost all other lilies, L.
candidum has no resting period.
Fresh growth develops from the
bulbs as soon as the flowering
period is over so, if bulbs are to
be divided or shifted, the work
is best done now. Also, unlike
other lilies, the bulb should not
be covered but the top third left
above the ground. They like hot,
dry spots and will tolerate some
lime.
Multiply all lily bulbs
by detaching scales and
inserting them point upwards
in boxes of sandy soil with the
base of each scale just below the
surface. Keep the boxes moist and
plant the scales out when they
have rooted. Plants propagated
this way should flower in the
second season.
Violas and pansies may be
looking straggly and producing
smaller flowers. Cut them back to
new growth just above the ground
and they will spring away.
Tulips and hyacinths can be
lifted and cleaned when the tops
have died down. Place the bulbs
in shallow trays in a dry, cool,
airy place. Never expose them
to full sunshine. Anemones
and ranunculuses can be lifted
and stored for a month or two,
until planting space is available.
For winter blooms, plant some
anemone bulbs now in a warm
place. Like all bulbs, narcissi,
crocuses and snowdrops suffer
if kept out of the soil for any
length of time. Lift only when
overcrowding makes it necessary
and replant without delay.
THRIVE: Strawberries like
plenty of compost, leaf
mould and well-rotted
manure.
Fruit
Strawberry plants can be
increased readily from the rooted
runners the plants are now
producing. Use only the strongest
on any vine and after it has
established roots, set it out in rich
soil in early March. This summer
propagation allows the plant
to develop before cold weather
sets in and bear a fruit crop next
summer. If planting is delayed
until winter or spring, no fruit
should be allowed to develop in
the first season.
Being of woodland origin,
strawberries like plenty of
compost, leaf mould and wellrotted
manure. Superphosphate
applied when planting will supply
the phosphates important to
full growth. Do not use lime, as
strawberries prefer a slightly acid
soil.

THE LEAD into summer may
have been a bit gloomy but it
did provide conditions that have
given us lush, healthy roses with
an abundance of flowers.
There are several practical tasks
to help maintain roses at their
best – applying mulch around the
base of the rose helps maintain
moisture, protects the soil surface
and reduces weed growth;
watering well during the growing
season, noting that roses shifted
or recently planted may require
more watering; and feeding roses
with fertiliser by apply around
the drip line a little and often,
but only when the soil is moist.
To encourage new growth and
repeat flowering, remove or
dead-head old flowers. This is
simply achieved by removing
the old flower or flowering
stem by cutting back to the first
complete leaf with five leaflets,
or to any new actively growing
side shoots. In roses that have
multi-headed blooms, pinch out
each individual flower as they age
until the entire head has finished,
then remove the stem.
When selecting new roses
look for good healthy bushes.

to be more resistant to pests and
diseases. The Dunedin Botanic
Garden, neighbours’ gardens
and membership of a local rose

Pests and disease are always
a possibility and there are any
number of treatment options
available. Good hygiene is one
of the best management options,

households feed birds in their
backyards – but are we feeding
them the right kinds of food?
Dr Margaret Stanley, a professor
of ecology, says most of us
feed birds with bread and seeds,
which is unlikely to attract
our native species who prefer
sweeter treats.
“We take what’s happening
overseas and kind of plonk it on
the New Zealand context, which
doesn’t really work,” she says.
“In the UK and in the US,
places like that, they have a
lot of species that eat seed and
grain, what we call granivores,
and in (Canterbury) our native
Margaret
Stanley
species just don’t
eat those things,
we’ve got a lot of
the honey-eaters
– things that eat
nectar and fruit.
“So when we
put out this seed
and this grain and
bread, then all we
do is attract large numbers of
sparrows and pigeons and things
like that and it tends to push out
our little native species.”
To attract and support native
birds like bellbirds and tui some
people put out sugar water for
them to feed on, which Stanley
says can be helpful for the birds
in winter, but at other times
could prove a distraction.
“There are some concerns
about it, that perhaps there
might be more disease if birds
are hanging around feeders, perhaps
they’re not spending that
time pollinating native flowers
and dispersing seeds and doing
their job they should be.”
She suggests that rather than
feeding them all year round,
save the sugar water for winter
– but be sure to keep the
feeder clean. Stanley’s research
found that birds in gardens with
feeders had about four-and-ahalf
times more coccidia, an
organism that causes severe

digestive problems in birds. She
recommends cleaning backyard
feeders at least twice a week by
scrubbing them with hot water.
The type of feeder used can
also help prevent the spread of
disease. Stanley recommends
a specialised feeder with holes
designed for honey-eaters with
long tongues, as it’s less likely
that faeces will make it inside.
Another way to support your
neighbourhood bird population
is to install a bird bath, particularly
doing long dry summers
where water sources are limited.
“It’s definitely a great idea to
have a water bath and often you
can see some really good behavioural
interaction and have that
connection instead of the effort
of putting out those feeders,”
Stanley said.
They also must be cleaned
frequently. Feeders and
birdbaths should also be kept
away from trees, preferably on
a tall post, to keep birds safe
from predators like cats. While
we tend to focus on flowers and
fruit when thinking about food
for birds, Stanley says insects
are also an important protein
source, particularly during
breeding season. So consider
planting some native plants that
attract a lot of native insects,
such as manuka. – RNZ

TAKE CARE: Watch out for poisonous potato ‘apples’, toxic rhubarb leaves and parsnips which can give you a rash if touched with bare hands.
Avoiding hidden poisons in your garden
Gillian Vine urges people
to take a little caution in
their vegetable plots and
highlights the potential
dangers of the fruit of
potatoes, rhubarb and
parsnips
I DON’T LIKE the common
name “potato apple” for the fruit
which looks like a green tomato,
as it implies that it is edible.
In fact, it is horribly toxic,
thanks to the presence of
solanine, a glycoalkaloid toxin
which induces symptoms
including dizziness, vomiting,
diarrhoea, paralysis and even
death.
Removing the flowers of
potatoes stops the fruit forming
and doesn’t harm the crop.
The chemical is found in the
foliage and green potatoes, too,
although chlorophyll may be the
cause of greening.
Play it safe and don’t eat green
spuds. Rather than waste them,
pop them in the ground for a late
crop of new potatoes, which will
be quite normal and a treat for
Easter.
Potatoes belong to the
nightshade family (solanaceae),
which includes tomatoes,
aubergines, chilli peppers and
even tobacco.
In some species, such as deadly
nightshade (Atropa belladonna),
the entire plant is toxic.
Fortunately, deadly nightshade
is rare in this country but black
nightshade (Solanum nigrum),
which is not as poisonous but
still potentially harmful, is
extremely widespread.
Another nightshade, poroporo
(S. aviculare), has large berries
that are poisonous when green,
but the fully ripe fruit is edible.
If you plan to eat poroporo,
be certain of its identity as it can
easily be confused with harmful
nightshades.
Tomatoes also contain
solanine, especially in foliage,
stems and green fruit. Cooking
reduces the risk, so green tomato
chutney is a good way to use
unripe fruit.
Solanine is not the only poison
lurking in the vegetable plot. The
oxalic acid in rhubarb is wellknown
and the leaves – where
most is stored – are often used
for a natural insect killer.
For a spray to zap chewing
insects, such as aphids,
caterpillars and spider mites, put
rhubarb leaves in a pot (ideally
an old one no longer used for
food), cover with water and boil
for about 20 minutes.
Allow it to cool, then remove
the leaves. Add a tablespoonful
of dishwashing liquid, mix well
and pour into a spray bottle.
Clearly label the bottle “poison”.
If you are thinning parsnips
on a sunny day, make sure you
wear gloves, or you risk getting
parsnip rash – also known as
phytophotodermatitis – an
unpleasant skin ailment that
causes itching and blistering,
usually about 24 hours after
handling the vegetable.
The reason for the rash is the
presence of furocoumarins in
the foliage and skins of parsnips,
which in sunny weather interact
with UV rays and set up the
irritation.
It is recommended that
parsnips be peeled before
cooking. Celery and parsley have
been known to cause parsnip
rash, but seem to do so only
occasionally. But don’t let this
doom and gloom put you off
growing vegetables, as nothing
tastes better than home-grown
potatoes or ripe tomatoes warm
from the sun.

Touch of French Riviera in Skoda Fabia
MONTE CARLO is one of the
most fascinating places I’ve had the
good fortune to visit.
In terms of major motorsport
events, it is also home to the iconic
formula one grand prix and has
long been host to a round of the
World Rally Championship.
Skoda has had regular
contenders with the latter. It
entered the competition in 1999
and has had a lot of success in both
it and WRC-2, mostly with its
Fabia.
Capitalising on that success, the
company has launched a couple
of Monte Carlo models – Kamiq
and five-door Fabia hatchback.
The Monte Carlo is the only Fabia
variant available now and it has had
a major lifecycle change, arriving
here at tempting price of $39,990,
and squeezes into the low emission
zone rewarding a buyer with a
$2181 NZ Government Clean Car
Programme rebate. Bear in mind,
though, if you want the bright red
paintwork, as in the evaluation car’s
case, it will set you back an extra
$1000.
In true sports hatch fashion, the
stroppy Fabia has a tight feel on
the road, and while the spring and
damper rates are on the firm side,
there is compliance and onboard
comfort isn’t jeopardised.
Amidst the few specification
options are 18in wheels, the
evaluation car wasn’t fitted with
them, but such is its feel and
presence on the road with the
standard 17in (215/45) Michelin
tyres the Fabia affords an involving
feel and strong connection with the
road.
Given the suggestion there are
motorsport links to the Fabia
Monte Carlo, I eked out some
tight and twisty high country
roads. It has definite composure
and accuracy into a turn, steerage
is sharp and body balance is well
controlled.
Under the bonnet is an
interesting four-cylinder engine
of 1.5-litre. It’s a strong engine
thanks to some fairly healthy
outputs – 110kW and 250Nm,
both generated by turbocharged
forced induction. What makes this
engine so special is the area where
the power is developed. Skoda
claim maximum torque is available
all of the way from 1500rpm to
3500rpm, almost meeting the point
of peak power which comes in at
5000rpm.
The result is a smooth, progressive
flow of energy, and that is the
essence of the modern engine;
power arrives smoothly and is
linear. Drive is sent to the front
wheels through a seven-speed direct
shift (dual clutch) gearbox. It is the
Volkswagen group’s preferred design
for automatic transmission and it
works effectively with quick, clean
shifts and ratios that complement
the power outputs. There are also
four drive modes that can be
implemented, depending on the
type of journey ahead.
The entire driveline is strong,
willing and silent. If you are a

small hatchback buyer and want
to reap the reward of minimal fuel
use then this is the car for you. A
work colleague has just purchased
a Fabia Monte Carlo and he says
he gets a 6.3-litre per 100km fuel
usage average – even during a
consistent inner-city commute.
That relates well to Skoda’s
5.3l/100km claim and the 7l/100km
figure that was showing on the
readouts when I returned it to
the dealership. For the record, a
4.5l/100km figure registers at a
steady 100km/h, the engine loping
over gently at just 1800rpm.
On the subject of figures, the
Fabia in this form is also quite
sprightly, it will launch to 100km/h
in 8sec and will complete a
highway overtake (80-120km/h) in
5.3sec.
The turbo boost is quite strong
and, as such, there is a certain
urgency if you give the accelerator
pedal a bit of a nudge, it isn’t vividly
fast but it has punch nonetheless.
Elsewhere the Fabia carries all of
the virtues that make Skoda such an
interesting manufacturer in terms
of functionality, right from the
clever door-located umbrella holder
to the rubbish bin-type container
inside the driver’s door pocket.
There’s also a parking ticket holder
• Price – Skoda Fabia Monte
Carlo, $39,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4125mm; width, 1954mm;
height, 1461mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
1498cc, 110kW,
250Nm, seven-speed
direct shift automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 8sec
• Fuel usage – 5.3l/100km
on the windscreen, pen holder in
the centre console and cellphone
holders on the back of the front
seats. Add in wireless cellphone
charging it all adds up to a userfriendly
manufacturing philosophy.
It also gets a bit of sporty treatment,
seat stripes, carbon-coloured trim
details, red accent flashes and
aluminium pedals. I particularly
liked the red door grab handle, it
is easy to spot and very practical,
which means if you are in and out
of the car often closing the door is
significantly easier.
Along with that, the Fabia is
extremely comfortable. At just 4.1m
it isn’t a big car, but it does have
interior space that will easily cater
for the small family. At 380-litres
(extending to 1190-litres) there is
also generous load space, it easily
catered for a supermarket load of
groceries after the Kiddie-weekly
Pak’nSave shop. What’s more, if you
lift up the spare wheel cover in the
boot you’ll find a full-size spare.
That’s something I particularly
relate to.
The Fabia in this form is a very
interesting car; sure, it misses out
on a few items that I thought would
be mandatory, it doesn’t get heated
seats, but in an unusual move it
gets a heated steering wheel. There’s
also manual handbrake lever,
however, I particularly relate to
that as I like things simple and I
like the idea of additional control
everywhere I can find it.
There’s no doubt Skoda is
going places in New Zealand, the
company has had some massive
corporate orders – police and
Corporate Cabs – and that success
has raised the profile of the brand
markedly. What’s more, the quality
of product is high grade and
interesting.
Clever features are part of the
company’s ideology; I can’t see the
Fabia Monte Carlo being anything
other than a resounding success.

Confident at Auctions
Looking confident may be all you need to be the last
bidder standing when the hammer goes down.
Does your blood pressure go sky-high at
the sight of an auction room? Chances are
some of your fellow bidders are doing all
in their power to psych you out and win
the bidding.
Securing a property isn’t just about
having the most money. Sometimes the
winning bidder is the one with the most
confidence.
They use psychology to convince
opposing bidders to give up, hoping to
make everyone else think they’ve got more
to spend than anyone else in the room.
Too often buyers have preconceived
ideas about how the auction will unfold
and have their confidence knocked when it
doesn’t go their way.
Two can play at that game. You just need
to get your strategy right.
Looking confident may be all you need
to be the last bidder standing when the
hammer goes down.
To be that person you need to do some
preparation. Make sure you go to a few
auctions first to get used to them.
Come bidding day, park yourself on
the side at the front so that you can
see everyone in the room and, more
importantly, they can see you whether
they’re at the back of the front.
It gives you a vantage point and shows
the opposition you are bidding confidently
against them.
You are hoping that the other buyers
have a plan in place.
Often that’s to start low. So if you come
in with a relatively high first bid, you may
rattle them.
“The lower the open bid the more people
can afford to bid. So you could knock out
some of the opposition before they even
place a bid if you choose the right opener.
Don’t start at $500,000 for a house you
know is going to go for at least $800,000.
Put an opening bid of $785,000.
Immediately your opposition is going to
think it will go incredibly high and might
be unnerved.
Call each bid out confidently. “It shows
you are comfortable and in control.
The more confident you seem the more
people will think you have done it before.
It’s a really good idea to vary your
bidding increments.. If it’s going up by
$2000 bids and it’s below your limit don’t
be afraid to put a $10,000 bid in..
Your competition is always thinking
about that next $2000 bid and if you
change the rhythm from $2000 to $10,000
you show you have the money and it
changes where their next bid has to be.
Instead of $4000 more it is $12,000 more.
Finally, if you’re a couple, make sure
you’ve discussed every aspect of the
auction before you get there. As soon
as you start looking at each other or
conferring, the opposition will think
you’re weak.

Four things you MUST
do before buying a home
Buying a home is a big deal. It’s likely to be the most expensive thing you buy,
and it can be a complicated legal process. It might be tempting to take a few
shortcuts, but failing to do things properly could cause more problems later.
Here are our top four tasks for home
buyers.
1. Research the property
The real estate agent selling the
property acts on behalf of the seller,
however they are also required to
tell you everything they know about
the property. They must respond
professionally to all your enquiries and
not withhold any details. Remember
that you still need to do your own
due diligence. That means getting a
title search so you can find out all the
facts about the property’s ownership,
boundary and access, as held by Land
Information New Zealand (LINZ). It’s
a good idea to get a Land Information
Memorandum (LIM), which shows
information held by the local council
about the property and land. For
valuable feedback on the property’s
condition, get a report done by
an inspector who has professional
indemnity insurance and carries out
their work in accordance with the New
Zealand Property Inspection Standard.
Although this all costs money, it will
save you more in the long term. Sellers
may occasionally provide some of this
information for you. If this happens,
check that it is up-to-date.
2. Get legal advice
Buying property is expensive, and it
can cost even more if something goes
wrong. That’s why it’s important to get
legal advice before you sign anything.
A lawyer will handle all the paperwork
LOOKING FOR DESIGN INSPIRATION?
Visit one of our stunning showhomes to gather ideas for your dream home
involved in the process, including the
title search, and offer impartial advice.
If you don’t have a lawyer, the New
Zealand Law Society can help you find
one at propertylawyers.org.nz.
3. Understand the sale process
There are several methods of buying
and selling property, for example,
tender or auction. It’s important to
understand the process for the property
you are buying. Practices can vary
between agencies so make sure you
confirm details with them. The Home
Buyer’s Guide at buyingahome.reaa.
govt.nz has more helpful advice.
4. Read the sale and purchase
agreement and understand what it
means
The sale and purchase agreement
is your contract with the seller. It is
crucial to read it very carefully and get
legal advice before you sign. You can
negotiate the terms and conditions of
an agreement, but once you sign it,
there’s no going back.

Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
New Year
market overview
31
REINZ (The Real Estate Institute
of New Zealand) December’s
figures show house prices
are still declining, with a 12.2%
decrease nationally and
properties taking longer to sell.
However, it’s not all doom and
gloom in the real estate market,
even with current interest rates
and lower house prices.
Selwyn appears to retain the “place to
buy” title with the New Year starting with
a bright outlook for sales. Richard Tait
from Harcourt Four Seasons Realty says
that the end of December saw fantastic
results, which seems to be carrying
forward to the start of 2023 with good
stock and sales. The overall New Zealand
median house price was $790,000 in
December, and this month, Richard says
house prices in Selwyn range from $700-
$900 000, with sales completed in under
60 days. Open home numbers have been
excellent, and with people realising it’s
“what it’s going to be”, interest rates don’t
seem to prevent buyers from purchasing.
Richard and the staff at Harcourts
Four Seasons believe that Selwyn is an
“undervalued part of New Zealand and
represents extremely good value for
out-of-towners.” With high sale prices
in other regions, buying in Selwyn can
potentially allow some purchasers to
become mortgage free. People can buy a
new fully-insulated, ready-to-go home
on a decent-sized section that is relatively
maintenance-free to give them time to do
what they love. The continuing addition
of new facilities, services, and retail in the
area means there are even more reasons
buyers choose Selwyn to live in.
The market for lifestyle properties has
also been achieving excellent outcomes.
Richard advises, “Well-presented
properties are getting very good prices,
and there is really good competition for
them.” West Melton properties continue
to be sought-after, while throughout
Selwyn, anywhere surrounding Rolleston,
Prebbleton, and Lincoln is popular.
Having the lifestyle you want and
working in town is not an issue with easy
commuting on hand. Rural residents are
finding it easier to get what they need
locally without driving into town.
With a glass-half-full outlook, Richard
suggests that as things have stabilised in
the Selwyn property market, we will see
a steady demand that should result in a
continuous flow of business within the
area.
