Burnouts, bands and so much
more at annual muscle car event
The annual Muscle Car Madness event
is again being run at the end of
January, and as spokesperson Craig
Stare remarks: “What a crazy couple of
years we have had with Covid. Luckily, we
managed to run the last couple of shows
successfully with a record Saturday turnout
last year.
“We weren’t so lucky on the Sunday
with rainy weather and the announcement
that we were going into total lockdown
later that day pretty much destroying
the day. So, choose your day wisely,” he
advises.
“Saturday has become the main day,
and this year there is drag racing on
the Sunday – an ultimate ‘petrolheads’
weekend.”
Pete Schimanski returns this year
with another car from his collection, this
time one of the wildest street-legal early
Holden Monaros ever seen on New Zealand
streets. Also from Palmerston North, a
supercharged 383-cubic-inch Chevroletpowered
Morris 1100 – BADBMC, is sure
to add spice to the burnout pad. Arnie
Donaldson returns with his methanolburning,
blown and injected chopped
Falcon ute and Ricky Ireland’s top Aussie
Holden ute has its South Island debut.
Matt Elliot is bringing his Chevrolet
C10 pick-up all the way from Tauranga,
Craig says, a super-slick show truck. Also,
possibly New Zealand’s top caravan owned
by Phil Dunstan will be on display.
“A lot of new cars will debut at this
event. We have a contingent of nice cars
travelling all the way from Waiheke Island
and another large bunch from the Wairoa
Rod and Custom Club in Hawkes Bay.”
All-day action includes the retro
pageant at 12 noon on Saturday catering
for all ages. Entries will be taken on the
day. This will be followed by Stadium
Finance’s burnout competition from 1pm
with the finals on the Sunday. Sign of the
Firebird will play from 12 noon before
burnouts start.
Saturday features two big display
areas with the main arena normally full by
9.30am. The secondary area’s entrance is
through the public parking gate.
“If you only intend staying for a couple
of hours please use the second parking
area so we can keep the arena as full as
possible for our important customers to
view,” Craig says.
For the first time in three years an
international band is able to return, with
the confirmation of the Flyin’ Saucers
rockabilly band from Melbourne coming to
entertain the crowds.
As Craig says, “Everybody loves
Belinda on the double bass. And I recently
discovered another amazing band from
Auckland playing at the ‘Beach Hop,’ called
The Sons, and they will join the line-up of
bands.”
The huge number of trade displays
include parts for your ride, stuff for your
“man cave”, and plenty of things to wear or
sign to put on the wall. Items for sale will
include rockabilly dresses and handbags
for the ladies, toys for the kids (and kids’
rides) and the famous event T-shirts, which
sell out quickly.
The event kicks off on Thursday night
with Real Steel’s (Riverton) ‘Twin Towns’
cruise. This leaves from outside Rangiora

BMW Mini John Cooper Works
When BMW bought into the Mini brand in
1996 it embraced the history and concept
of the early Austin and Morris cars.
So much so, that even the high
performance name of Cooper has been
retained over the years.
Cooper harks back to 1948 when father
and son Charles and John Cooper were
making open wheel cars for motorsport,
to which they had much success.
The British Motor Corporation (and
British Leyland) capitalised on that
success and badged many of the Mini
variants Cooper and Cooper S, both had
significant performance enhancements
over the standard models. Racing and
rallying success followed, a Mini with
either badge was sought after and
desirable.
As tribute to the Mini Cooper’s
illustrious past, today’s Mini range
incorporates several John Cooper Worksbadged
models – three-door, Countryman
and Clubman, all commonly referred to as
JCW.
This evaluation focuses on the Clubman,
although all immediately impress with
their sporty looks and keen performance,
the latter thanks to a turbocharged,
2-litre four-cylinder engine that is rated at
225kW and 450Nm.
These figures are up with the
competition in terms of power output
placing the JCW quite squarely in the hot
hatchback market, although with its clever
twin opening rear door arrangement it
isn’t exactly a hatchback. As the badge
Clubman suggests, it’s a slimmed down
versatile station wagon.
If the engine size and figures look
familiar, it is much the same power
plant that can be found in BMW’s M135i
and, as such, the JCW has phenomenal
performance on tap. It is an engine that
works effectively through the entire rev
band and doesn’t need to be constantly
driven towards the top end. Drive is
channelled through an eight-speed
automatic transmission. It is characterised
by quick, strong shifts and ratios in the
early gears that are biased towards quick
acceleration.
The JCW Mini is quick, it will lunge to
100km/h from a standstill in 5.1sec, and
will complete an 80-120km/h overtaking
manoeuvre in 4sec, all of the time enticing
the driver with a wilful engine sound and
exhaust growl which pops and crackles
with each gearshift.
BMW also lists a 7.7-litre per 100km/h
combined cycle fuel usage rating. That
correlates well with the 9.6l/100km
showing on the test car’s trip readout
and the 6l/100km instantaneous figure
travelling at 100km/h (engine speed
1800rpm).
I took the test car on the fabulous roads
that make up State Highway 72 (Scenic
Route), through the tight and twisty roads
out of the river gorges the JCW provided
accurate and stable handling. Grip in the
first instance is supplied by low profile
Bridgestone rubber (235/35 x 19in), and
if you add in the benefits of drive to all
four corners through a fully independent
suspension you end up with a car which is
delightful and capable in a corner.
Power to the rear is quite strong and it
gives the false impression that it is rear
drive only. Just when you think oversteer
can be initiated out of a corner the front
bites and that force is negated. However,
it is a wonderful handling feeling and
certainly draws the driver into the feel
of the car. That’s what buying a sports
car represents, as a driver you want
to feel fully involved within the unique
characteristics of it, the JCW makes you
feel special, simply because it is a very
special car.
The balance of power and handling is
insightful, the JCW is eager, especially in
sport mode, but there is also normal mode
which encourages moderate accelerator
use in order to glean those amazing fuel
usage figures.
One thing any prospective buyer
would need to consider is that the ride is

firm, sure BMW have done well to build
compliance into the system, and there’s
just enough suspension so that road
ripples and ruts are absorbed, but with
the low profile tyres there is a constant
reminder that this is a car that is built so
that corners can be challenged without a
handling compromise.
On that subject, I must mention as well,
the quality of the brakes, huge vented
discs are fitted at each corner providing
immense braking power. There needs
to be strong retardation, the JCW fair
flies between corners, but slowing and
stopping is quick and constant.
Inside, the JCW gets all of the trim and
specification you’d expect to find in any
BMW, and it is laid out in the style which
is retrospective making the Mini concept
true to the past and very much a standout.
The JCW Clubman is priced from
$75,940, as with all BMW product there
are a vast array of specification and trim
options depending on your taste and
need, and the evaluation car was carrying
several extras. However, it is still priced
firmly amidst its competition.
There are many high performance
models that share similar performance
around the same price, but the Mini
is much different in terms of styling, I
particularly like the rear doors system and,
of course, I like the interior design details
that hark back to the 1960s. What I’m
referring to there is the switchgear and
toggle arrangements that form part of the
centre console dash panel, they look and
feel great to manipulate. That attention to
detail is something to treasure.
When I met my wife 42 years ago
she had a Morris Mini and it served her
well for many years. Every time I’m in a
new generation model I relate to that
early 850. Sure, the Mini today is a vastly
different in terms of technology, but there
are many elements that transport you
back to that era.
