Love Makes the
World Go ‘Round
February in Delray Beach is full of ways to show your
sweetheart love. Besides all the wonderful places you can
visit with your sweetie, there is also “love” as in tennis!
The Delray Beach Open kicks off February 10 and lasts
9 wonderful days bringing in some of the best tennis
players in the world!
Love on a budget? We can help! Our Delray Under $50 regular
feature suggests ways to woo your date without breaking the
bank. Love live music? We got you covered! The Arts Garage and
Old School Square have amazing concerts and shows scheduled –
something for everyone!
Like al fresco dining? Well, you’re in luck! There are 10
restaurants offering a 4-course dinner while competing for the best
table décor, right down the middle of Atlantic Avenue! The 14th
Annual Savor the Avenue is happening March 27, but tickets go on
sale February 1, and they go FAST!
We also celebrate Black History this month – our incredible city
has lots to celebrate! The Spady Museum is a cultural center always
open with amazing exhibits and programs highlighting the culture
of Delray.
More information on all of the above can be found inside – Locals
Only, Happenings, Gotta Know, and throughout the issue. Our All
America City is full of things to do, see, and indulge in with your
favorite person.
Our City Person this month is the fabulous Deborah Dowd.
Deborah is a retired schoolteacher that takes volunteering to a
whole new level! Some of the boards she serves are Old School
Square, The Achievement Centers, and Impact 100 PBC – but that’s
just the tip of the iceberg! She’s also served on city zoning and site
planning boards, task teams, and the CRA. After reading about
Deborah, you might need a nap!
February is a great time to stroll down the Ave or visit the Grove
– have a snack or meal outside and enjoy our beautiful city in
perfect weather.
Love
is the
whole
thing.
We are
only
pieces.
Arts Garage in
Delray Beach to
Present The Spirit
of Harriet Tubman
Marjorie Waldo, President & CEO of
Arts Garage, today announced the
nonprofit organization’s 2023 theater season
will conclude next month with another
thought-provoking production.
“Arts Garage’s four-show theater season
has offered powerful thematic performances
so far, and our final production
will be both inspirational and soul-stirring,”
says Waldo.
February 10 (Friday) at 8 pm
The Spirit of Harriet Tubman
A One Woman Show by Leslie McCurdy
(With music by Bishop Moore & the
Straghnettes of the Straghn & Sons Tri-
County Funeral Home)
On a barren stage with only a trunk of
costumes, Leslie McCurdy thrills her audience
with her passionate portrayal of The
Spirit of Harriet Tubman. For a breathtaking
hour, she embodies Tubman’s immortal
spirit from early childhood to her
elder years, sharing the life of the famous
Underground Railroad conductor by recreating
stories familiar and some rarely told,
using words said to have been Tubman’s
own. Through it all the audience learns of
the faith and conviction that drove Harriet
Tubman to follow her dreams.
Tickets: $30
Tickets are available for purchase by
calling the Arts Garage at 561.450.6357 or
by going online to www.ArtsGarage.org.
I
am thrilled to be featured in this month’s Atlantic Ave
Magazine’s Spotlight. My name is Jerilyn Walter and I
am the Founder/Broker of Posh Properties in Delray
Beach and Ocean Ridge. With little more than $900 in my
pocket, I had a dream of a local centric, community minded
brokerage that focused on cultivating a reputation of top
notch agents that know the territory. I am a graduate of the
Realtor’s Association’s Leadership Academy, and a member
of 4 Realtor’s Boards. From Jupiter to Miami we have made
that dream come true with experienced professional agents
that work for the customer not the commission.
While my background is very diversified compared to
most brokers, from Playboy Bunny to California Court
appointed Receiver, and now Successful Broker, I have used
my experience to create an inspiring work environment
and I lead by example. Nothing is more rewarding than to
know Posh Properties is where agents want to work and
customers want to come when buying, selling or investing
in real estate.
I hope you will stop by and give Posh Properties the chance
to show you what a difference it makes when working with
our brokerage.
locals only | delray under $50
By Darien Davies
Delray Under $50
Most Fun Small Town, Most Crazy Small Town, Most Small Town that Feels
Like a Big Town. Delray has it all. With a bustling downtown, Pineapple
Grove area, and little nooks and crannies in between, there’s more
to do in Delray now than ever, with events and happenings
spanning from daytime to nighttime. While it can
seem expensive at times, there’s a great
opportunity to enjoy all the City has to offer
without breaking the bank. Here’s what you can
do in Delray Beach in February for $50 or less.
February is Black History Month, and Delray Beach is
planning an exciting lineup of events to commemorate
the contributions of African Americans within
our city, across our nation, and throughout our history -
and everyone is invited! Not only is this a great opportunity
to celebrate each other and our neighbors, it’s also a
great opportunity to learn about the many ways a diverse
community makes a great community. Start the monthlong
celebrations with a Black Elegance Fashion Show
that will highlight the African American style and culture.
This event is held at THRōW Social on Wednesday, February
1 from 6 to 8 pm and tickets are $35. Next up is
a Black History Academic Brain Bowl where elementary,
middle, and high school students from across Palm Beach
County will compete for prizes in this Jeopardy-style
competition. This is held Saturday, February 11 from 9 am to 12
pm at the Field House at Old School Square. The fun continues with
the Second Annual Black History Youth Awareness Arts Fest. Hosted
outdoors at the Spady Museum, this community project aims
to engage Palm Beach County youth and community organizations
through art, music and black history. This free event is held Sunday,
February 17 from 4 to 9 pm What a lineup! Visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com
or call (561) 243-1077 for complete event details.
Well, we’re officially into the swing of things, folks! While
it might just be February, before we know it it’ll be summer,
then Thanksgiving, then New Year’s Eve, so the time
is now to start practicing smelling those roses. February is National
Time Management Month and if you need a little bit of relaxing, or
a little bit of dancing, then head to Old School Square for their Free
Concerts series. February’s show features Crossfire Creek Band,
which is a five-piece New Country/Top 40 Country band based out
of Tampa/Clearwater that is bursting onto the country music scene
with its unique flare and one-of-a-kind performances. Their highenergy
show features true-to-the-original cover versions of today’s
New Country from Luke Combs, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Kane
Brown, and more. The concert is held Thursday, February 23 at the
Old School Square Pavilion, 51 N. Swinton Ave. You’re invited to
bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy some jams under the stars,
and kick back and enjoy your time! Gates open at 6:30 pm and the
concert begins at 7:30 pm. Visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com
or call (561) 243-1077 for more information.
With practice comes perfect, right? Hopefully for these
professional tennis players, yes! February is International
Expect Success Month and not only can you expect
success for a handful of amazing tennis players, you can also
expect to have a successful and fun outing. The Delray Beach Tennis
Center is once again hosting the Delray Beach Open, which is
the world’s only ATP Champions Tour and ATP 250 event featuring
legends and top ranked ATP stars. You can expect to see every-

one from Bob and Mike Bryan, Ivo Karlovic and Sam Querrey,
to Taylor Fritz, John Isner and Tommy Paul. The entire event
lasts from Friday, February 10 to Sunday, February 19, with
daytime and nighttime matches and events varying by the
day. Not only are the matches fun to watch, there’s also merchant
tents, food and drink vendors, special highlights, and
more. It’s one of the best events to come to the Tennis Center
so make sure to mark your calendars and enjoy a successful
day and/or night out! The Delray Beach Tennis Center is
located at 201 W. Atlantic Ave. and single day tickets start at
$42. Visit www.yellowtennisball.com or call (561) 330-6000
for more information and to purchase tickets.
It’s either one of your favorite holidays or you skip right
over it on the calendar. Either way, there’s a reason to
celebrate because you can enjoy a party of deux (kisses
and candy) or a party of one (hey self, what do you want
to do? I agree!). If you feel like going out, you might as well
take advantage of some of the best locations Delray has to
offer. For some waterfront vibes, head to Deck 84 where you
can indulge in not only a menu to fit every palate, but also
one of the best al fresco bars that can pour any cocktail to
perfection. If you’d like something more intimate and cozier,
head to J&J Seafood Bar and Grill where you can toast to finding
your best fish in the sea with a menu that features all
the plenty of fish in the sea. If you’re picturing something
a bit more unique where you want to close the place down,
head to Dada. Their food and drink menu do not disappoint,
and their outdoor environment is one of the best in town. If
you prefer to get cozy on the sofa, head out for a margarita
and to-go tacos at El Camino because, well, as the song goes,
“tequila makes (her) clothes come off.” Zinger! Whatever
you do, do it with love. For restaurant locations, visit www.
downtowndelraybeach.com or call (561) 243-1077.
Now this is a holiday that is speakin’ my language. Red,
white, rosé or champagne, it’s always wine30. As if we
needed another reason to enjoy a toast - and thank you
for the invitation! - National Drink Wine Day is Saturday, February
18 so we should all take note and celebrate. Honestly,
it’d be rude not to. You can start and finish your into-the-gullet
gauntlet at The Wine Room where you can essentially sip your
way into wine heaven, and at your own pace. They have more
wine bottles than you can shake a grape vine at (200+ to be accurate),
and the beauty of the place is that you can swipe your
card, select your pour, and sip till your heart’s content. If you’d
like to enjoy some delicious fare while you indulge, do like the
Romans and head to Elisabetta’s Ristorante. Not only is their
Italian-focused menu perfect for a night out, but their Italian
focused wine menu features more options than the average
merlot and cab sauv. It’s truly confusing and libation liberating
at the same time. If being social and out about about doesn’t
speak your language, here’s a little secret: Bedner’s Farm Fresh
Market has some of the best wine deals in town. Grab a bottle
(or six, they always have BOGO deals), maybe some snacks, and
head to the beach or Veterans Park for some Intracoastal boat
watching action. Wait, did Mr. Wine create his own holiday to
honor the nectar of the Gods? Actually, yeah, that sounds about
right. Visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com or call (561) 243-
1077 for specific location information.
entertainment | GOTTa knOW
by tom craig
With this new year only ten days old,
music fans were shocked by the sudden
and unexpected passing of guitar
legend Jeff Beck. Jeff has been called “the
greatest living rock guitarist.” Beck’s influence
on guitar playing cannot be overstated. He
was the guitarist’s guitarist from his start with
the Yardbirds to the Jeff Beck Group, Beck Bogart
and Appice, then to his solo career. Beck’s
style was inventive, constantly changing, and
Just A Song Before I Go
defying categorization. He made a new category.
Jeff was inducted into the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame twice. First in 1992 as a member
of the Yardbirds, then again in 2009 as a
solo artist. Jeff, we thank you for all you gave
us, and know that the band upstairs just got
turned up a notch or ten.
While fans were still coming to grips with
Beck’s untimely passing, eight days later,
word came that David Crosby had also left
this world. Gut punch number two in a week’s
time. David began his career as a founding
member of the Byrds folk-rock group. The
group’s unique covers of Bob Dylan and Pete
Seeger, along with their psychedelic songs like
Eight Miles High, would rocket them to the top
of the charts. In 1967 David was fired from
the Byrds and would find his way to Coconut
Grove, where he discovered Joni Mitchell
playing at the Gaslight South. After taking Joni
back to California to get a record deal a year
later, an impromptu jam would bring Crosby,
Stills, and Nash together for the first time.
They would harmonize on Stephen Stills’s
song “You Don’t Have To Cry,” and the rest, as
they say, is history. The soundtrack of a generation
was born. David’s vocals, harmonies,
songwriting, and sheer joy of playing music
have few equals. David, I know the angels have
welcomed your voice with open arms, and
you will soar with your fellow musicians who
awaited your arrival. Thank you for your harmony
and your words and telling us to stand
up and speak our minds.
As this year continues, we can only hope
to keep more of these artists and poets than
we lose. Though we do not have any say in the
matter, what we do have are the songs, the stories,
and the memories they have left with all
of us. The music lives on!
The Audrey Hepburn
Estate: A Novel
by Brenda JanOWITZ
When Emma Jansen discovers that the
grand Long Island estate where she
grew up is set to be demolished, she can’t
help but return for one last visit. After all,
it was a place filled with firsts: learning to
ride a bike, sneaking a glass of champagne,
falling in love.
But once Emma arrives at the storied
mansion, she can’t ignore the more complicated
memories. Because that’s not exactly
where Emma grew up. Her mother and father
worked for the family that owned the
estate, and they lived over the garage like
Audrey Hepburn’s character in the film
Sabrina. Emma never felt fully accepted,
except by the family’s grandson, Henry—
a former love—and by the driver’s son,
Leo—her best friend.
As plans for the property are put into motion
and the three are together for the first
time in over a decade, Emma finds herself
caught between two worlds and two loves.
And when the house reveals a shattering
secret about her own family, she’ll have to
decide what kind of life she really wants for
herself now and who she wants to be in it.
The Family Chao
by Lan Samantha Chang
One of Literary Hub’s and The Millions’
Most Anticipated Books of 2022
A Goodreads Readers’ Most Anticipated
Mystery of 2022
An acclaimed storyteller returns with “a
gorgeous and gripping literary mystery”
that explores “family, betrayal, passion,
race, culture and the American Dream”
(Jean Kwok).
The residents of Haven, Wisconsin, have
dined on the Fine Chao restaurant’s delicious
Americanized Chinese food for thirtyfive
years, content to ignore any unsavory
whispers about the family owners. Whether
or not Big Leo Chao is honest, or his wife,
Winnie, is happy, their food tastes good and
their three sons earned scholarships to respectable
colleges. But when the brothers
reunite in Haven, the Chao family’s secrets
and simmering resentments erupt at last.
Before long, brash, charismatic, and
tyrannical patriarch Leo is found dead—
presumed murdered—and his sons find
they’ve drawn the exacting gaze of the entire
town. The ensuing trial brings to light
potential motives for all three brothers:
Dagou, the restaurant’s reckless head chef;
Ming, financially successful but personally
tortured; and the youngest, gentle but lost
college student James. As the spotlight on
the brothers tightens—and the family dog
meets an unexpected fate—Dagou, Ming,
and James must reckon with the legacy of
their father’s outsized appetites and their
own future survival.
Brimming with heartbreak, comedy, and
suspense, The Family Chao offers a kaleidoscopic,
highly entertaining portrait of a Chinese
American family grappling with the
dark undercurrents of a seemingly pleasant
small town.
Stone Cold Fox
by Rachel Koller Croft
perfectly wicked debut thriller about
A an ambitious woman who, after a
lifetime of conning alongside her mother,
wants to leave her dark past behind and
marry the heir to one of the country’s
wealthiest families.
Like any enterprising woman, Bea knows
what she’s worth and is determined to get
all she deserves-it just so happens that
what she deserves is to marry rich. Filthy
rich. After years of forced instruction by
her mother in the art of swindling men, a
now-solo Bea wants nothing more than
to close and lock the door on their sordid
partnership so she can disappear safely
into old-money domesticity, sealing the final
phase of her escape.
When Bea chooses her ultimate target in
the fully loaded, thoroughly dull and blueblooded
Collin Case, she’s ready to deploy
all of her tricks one last time. The challenge
isn’t getting the ring, but rather the approval
of Collin’s family and everyone else in their
1 percent tax bracket, particularly his childhood
best friend, Gale Wallace-Leicester.
Going toe-to-toe with Gale isn’t a threat to an expert
like Bea, but what begins as an amusing catand-mouse
game quickly develops into a dangerous
pursuit of the grisly truth. Finding herself at a
literal life-and-death crossroads with everything
on the line, Bea must finally decide who she really
wants to be.
Road of Bones: A Novel
by Christopher Golden
An American documentarian travels a haunted
highway across the frozen tundra of Siberia in
New York Times bestselling author Christopher
Golden’s Road of Bones, a “tightly wound, atmospheric,
and creepy as hell” (Stephen King) supernatural
thriller.
Surrounded by barren trees in a snow-covered
wilderness with a dim, dusky sky forever overhead,
Siberia’s Kolyma Highway is 1200 miles of gravel
packed permafrost within driving distance of the
Arctic Circle. A narrow path where drivers face
such challenging conditions as icy surfaces, limited
visibility, and an average temperature of sixty degrees
below zero, fatal car accidents are common.
But motorists are not the only victims of the highway.
Known as the Road of Bones, it is a massive
graveyard for the former Soviet Union’s gulag prisoners.
Hundreds of thousands of people worked to
death and left where their bodies fell, consumed by
the frozen elements and plowed beneath the permafrost
road.
Fascinated by the history, documentary producer
Felix “Teig” Teigland is in Russia to drive the
highway, envisioning a new series capturing Life
and Death on the Road of Bones with a ride to the
town of Akhust, “the coldest place on Earth,” collecting
ghost stories and local legends along the
way. Only, when Teig and his team reach their destination,
they find an abandoned town, save one
catatonic nine-year-old girl—and a pack of predatory
wolves, faster and smarter than any wild animals
should be.
Pursued by the otherworldly beasts, Teig’s companions
confront even more uncanny and inexplicable
phenomena along the Road of Bones, as if
the ghosts of Stalin’s victims were haunting them.
It is a harrowing journey that will push Teig beyond
endurance and force him to confront the sins
of his past.
Behind the Scenes with
Boca Raton Film Director,
Marvin Samel
by TJ Silverman | Photo by Jeff Daly. Copyright FeMor Distribution LLC 2023
Making a movie is hard work. Perhaps nobody knows that
better than Boca Raton’s Marvin Samel, who endured the multiyear
process of bringing his film from the page to the screen.
52 | february 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Samel is no stranger to hard work, as he ran one of the largest
premium cigar companies in the world, Drew Estates, before
selling the company in 2014. “I should have been on top of the
world. It should have been one of the happiest times of my life. My
wife gave birth to our twin girls, but around that very same time, my
mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s,” Samel said. As a way to
cope with the depression, Samel turned to writing stories about his
father, Mordecai. “These vignettes were simply a therapeutic outlet
for me, but I noticed after some time that something clicked on the
page,” he said.
What clicked was ultimately the discovery of his first feature film,
the 2022 Miami Jewish Film Festival Audience Award, iMordecai.
“Prior to directing this film, I had never even stepped foot on a
movie set,” Samel said. “I had a script like a million other people,
and I thought, now what do I do with it? After a year and a half of
fruitless searching, I finally met Dahlia Heyman (producer and
award-winning screenwriter) and Allen Bain (executive producer),
who helped bring iMordecai to life.”
iMordecai tells the true story about Marvin’s father, Mordecai,
who must now face the realities of a modern world – navigating his
first iPhone. It tackles heavy subject matters such as the Holocaust,
Alzheimer’s, and family issues, but all the while remaining upbeat
and positive. “I like to think that ultimately, through letting go, he
begins to heal the things he cannot fix and turn the pain of his past
into something beautiful,” Samel said. “It’s a journey that takes you
through every human emotion and teaches you that it’s never too
late for inspiration.”
The film which not only takes place in South Florida but is also
filmed here – is truly a love letter to the community. Scenes highlighting
South Beach, Aventura, Wynwood, and the iconic Florida coastline,
are just some of the visuals Floridians will be excited to connect
with. “This film was only right to be shot here in South Florida. This
is where these stories took place, and I wanted to make sure every
scene had a connection to my parents and our story,” Samel said.
“Even all the extras were Mordecai’s ‘frenemies,’ the neighbors who
would deal with my father doing crazy things all the time.”
The characters are a huge part of what makes iMordecai special,
so casting was quintessential to bringing them to life. In terms of
casting, the film hits a metaphorical homerun – comprising of Oscarnominated
and Emmy-Winning actor Judd Hirsch (Taxi), Oscar-nominated
and Two-time Emmy winner Carol Kane (Hester Street), and
SAG Award winner Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings). “The exasperation
Sean portrays of me with Mordecai is from actually seeing me on set
with my dad,” says Samel. “Sean was always watching and listening,
and he was always around when I was with my father in the days
leading up to filming. That’s what he drew on. Sean observed the dynamic
between us closely. It gave him inspiration. He was able to take
certain parts of my essence, blend it with his own, and make it into
something entirely new.”
iMordecai will be coming to South Florida theaters February 10th.
It’s a heartfelt comedy that reminds us all that family is complicated
— it’s also funny, aggravating, and able to teach us about resiliency,
survival, and love. For Marvin Samel, the lessons he’s learned from
his father, Mordecai Samel, have been both infuriating and enlightening,
but nevertheless, a priceless journey that continues to inspire
future stories for years to come.
Just Ask Allie And Brandon
It’s not every day, the publisher of
Every father’s dream is to ensure that their children are
happy and healthy. Still, for David Kirby, publisher of Atlantic
Ave Magazine, it was a dream come true to witness
the marriage of his daughter Allie.
“If you are a parent whose daughter recently got married,
you may remember your feelings that day.
I was filled with powerful emotions –joy and happiness (especially
after my speech was finished!)
For Kirby, preparing for the big day was a labor of love. “I
had faith (As did Traci, the bride’s mother) that these two
young people were soulmates destined to meet and spend
their lives together.”
To keep things easy (and harmonious), Kirby left most of the
wedding decisions to Traci and the bride. He was, however, consulted
on big-ticket items. “For me, it seemed best to give them
a budget and stay out of the way! They went a bit over budget,
54 | february 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

ut being the bride’s father was an
honor of a lifetime. And, who can
put a price tag on that?”
All weddings are a day of supreme
joy and elation. But to ensure
that Allie’s big day had the magnitude
of grace and graciousness, they
held the wedding at the magnificent
Ancient Spanish Monastery.
This North Miami Beach Monastery
was not only beautiful but
had a magical, mystical aura to it.
It was also the perfect place to witness
love and revel in its extraordinary
benevolence.
The monastery was built in 1133
AD in northern Spain. It was later
dedicated to the Blessed Mother
and called, The Monastery of Our
Lady, Queen of the Angels.
Cistercian monks occupied the
monastery for nearly 700 years. In
the 1830s, the Monastery’s Cloisters
were seized, sold, and converted
into a granary and stable.
William Randolph Hearst purchased
the Cloisters and the Monastery
in 1925. The structure was
dismantled stone by stone, bound
with protective hay, and packed in
over 11,000 wooden crates. It was
shipped to the US, but Hearst’s financial
woes caused it to be sold
at auction.
The massive crates remained in a
warehouse in Brooklyn, New York,
for 26 years. After Hearst’s death in
1952, they were purchased for use
as a tourist attraction.
After 19 months and the equivalent
of nearly $20 million (in today’s
currency), the monastery was
put back together. In 1953 Time
magazine called it “the biggest jigsaw
puzzle in history.”
History was just what this young
couple was looking for in their fairytale
wedding location. The massive
monastic spiritual enclave was enchanting,
and the ethereal angelic
site was perfect for the occasion.
“Wedding guests came from all over
the USA and England to celebrate
my baby girl’s wedding and witness
the next chapter of her life. It was a
joyous evening of laughter, elation,
and of course, love.”
You could say it was love at first sight for the couple who met in
college at the University of Florida. While young Allie was walking
down the street, she saw the most beautiful wolf-like dog. As she
stared at the dog, its owner (Brandon) was amused by the attention
of this pretty petite stranger.
“Wanna pet my dog?” he said from across the street. Though she
thought the invitation was a little odd, she crossed the street to pet
the dog. She couldn’t help but notice that the owner was tall, dark,
and handsome (an excellent place to start).
She tried to forget about the interaction and focus on her schoolwork,
but she couldn’t stop thinking about the cute guy and his dog.
Later that night, Allie’s friends decided to go to Piano Bar for ladies’
night. But she couldn’t get Brandon out of her head, so she mustered
up her courage (with the help of red wine) and knocked on his door.
He answered in his boxers and said, “Hi.” Allie blurted, “I was wondering
if you wanted to go to Piano Bar with me tonight.” Brandon
stared at her for a few seconds and finally said, “Wow, are you the girl
from earlier? You clean up nicely!”
The couple danced all night, and Brandon asked all the right questions.
The next night Brandon cooked her dinner. When she got to his
apartment, she saw his counter was filled with only organic ingredients
for a Mexican dish, her favorite!
At first, Allie played hard to get telling Brandon she was not ready
for a relationship, but he didn’t listen. From surprise picnics in the
botanical gardens to scenic drives on his motorcycle to pick sunflowers
at the farm in Micanopy. Before long, she was head over heels for
this young man.
After three weeks, Brandon had a dozen red roses delivered to her
apartment. In the evening, he recited a song he had written for her.
From that moment on – in Gainsville, they were inseparable.
On November 24, 2019, Brandon hired a guitarist to play for them
on the beach at sunset and then asked her to marry him!
The answer was an unequivocal yes. The rest is history.
The wedding took place on December 18, 2022, and it was a day
that the bride, the groom, and their families will never forget. It was a
fairy tale wedding that met – and exceeded – everyone’s expectations.
The beautiful dress was custom designed by Yanna Machi Atelier
and modeled after the elegance and femininity of the bride. The long
full skirt and elaborate train that fell to the floor was a metaphor for
the couples enduring boundless love. And, its old-world opulence
was reminiscent of the brides’ love of all things Bridgerton.
The bride’s father, David Kirby, is known for his business acumen
and kind demeanor. He is also known for his pragmatism and understanding
of the human condition.
“Though life’s journey can take you on a circuitous trail of blessings
and challenges, I look upon my daughter (and new son-in-law) with
awe and confidence. They are young (in their 20’s) with excellent
educations and advanced degrees. You cannot explain to be young in
words – only in emotions. The clean slate that awaits them is perfect.”
Indeed it is.
Alexandra is a medical social worker at a Fresenius Kidney Care
dialysis clinic, and Brandon is in his 4th year of medical school. Bran-
don will graduate this June and has applied for residency, but they
won’t know where they’ll live until March.
That uncertainty is not something that the bride’s father is concerned
with. He does, however, have sage advice for the couple.
“When I married, I had no fear of the life ahead. I was confident
that whatever the world tossed my way, I could handle it with ease. I
also remember my dreams and aspirations at the time.”
The advice Kirby gives everyone, especially newly married couples,
is that throughout life, things will happen. “At the time, they
might seem terrible or unfair, but my experience has been, I realized
I would not have changed a thing each time this happened. So, I tell
young people to look at each perceived negative that comes into your
life and roll with it as part of your journey.”
He continued, you will often be blessed with experiences and
outcomes you would never have had without these perceived setbacks.
“As Garth Brooks once sang, ‘Sometimes I thank God for unanswered
prayers.’”
There were many prayers last month at the wedding of Allie and
Brandon. But also thoughts of realistic proportion that come with
introspection.
“This young couple has no children and no mortgage; they’re not
even sure where they’ll call home! That, my friends, is the essence of
freedom most people might only feel once!”
Perhaps, but love is eternal, and emotions are part of the most sacred
spaces in our hearts.
“As a man accused of not showing emotions, I cried several times
that day! The wedding was everything I could have hoped for and
more. We are blessed.”
Auto Accidents
and Whiplash
Auto accidents are a common occurrence. Some sources
state that 900-1100 auto accidents happen every day. The
damage to the cars can be fixed, but what about the damage
that occurs to you? The most common injury is whiplash.
Whiplash can occur in accidents as low as 8.2 mph. So,
even if you feel good, it is best to be examined by a physician
within the first two weeks of the accident. To
help prevent further injury and a longer recovery, being proactive
about your injury and health is essential.
Accidents can cause damage to the cervical spine by way of whiplash,
which is a result of the sudden acceleration and deceleration
of the head and neck caused by the collision. This can cause damage
to the joints, ligaments, discs, and nerve roots of the cervical spine,
leading to neck pain, limited mobility, and even paralysis. The most
important part of treating whiplash post-accident in the cervical
spine is to initially rest and reduce any activities that can aggravate
the condition. Over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen
or acetaminophen, can be used for pain relief. Applying cold or
hot compresses can also help reduce swelling and pain around the
damaged tissues. Doing some gentle stretching exercises can also
help. If the injury is severe and persistent, a course of chiropractic
treatments may be recommended. Most chiropractic offices are
well equipped to give an accurate assessment, physical exam, and
x-rays following the accident.
58 | february 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Chiropractic treatment can be an effective approach to managing
whiplash. A chiropractor can work to reduce inflammation, improve
flexibility and mobility, decrease pain, and generally improve
your overall quality of life through chiropractic manipulations and
treatments, such as adjustments and soft tissue therapy. The chiropractor
will also create a personalized care plan that may include
rehabilitative exercises and lifestyle changes designed to facilitate
healing, such as posture correction and strengthening exercises to
correct muscular imbalances that could have contributed to the
whiplash injury.
A common treatment to help whiplash is cold laser therapy, also
known as low-level laser therapy or photobiomodulation, which is
an alternative medical procedure used to treat various conditions,
including pain. Cold laser therapy has been studied and found to be
effective in treating whiplash. It reduces inflammation, pain, and
the healing time of the affected area while improving range of motion
and ultimately improving physical function.
Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy is a safe, non-invasive
treatment used to decompress the vertebrae in the spine.
This technique involves manual manipulation of the spine to gently
stretch the compressed vertebrae, relieving back pain and discomfort.
Non-surgical spinal decompression effectively relieves symptoms
associated with spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease,
herniated or bulging discs, and sciatica.
Non-surgical spinal decompression is also used to treat the
chronic pain and discomfort associated with whiplash, which is
caused by a rapid back-and-forth neck and head motion. This motion’s
acceleration-deceleration force can cause the neck’s soft tissues
to stretch or tear, leading to nerve irritation and pain. Nonsurgical
spinal decompression can help to restore normal cervical
alignment and reduce discomfort associated with whiplash.
Take the time to care for yourself after an accident. It is crucial
for healing and recovery.
February is for Self-Love
With February comes the month of “love’” thanks to
Valentine’s Day. No better time than now to talk about
how “self-love” is imperative for your fitness journey.
Self-love isn’t about being selfish and it’s not about comparing
yourself. It’s about self-acceptance, self-respect, self-conviction,
and accountability for yourself! Self-love gives you the
strength and courage to pursue your goals relentlessly, even on the
days where throwing in the towel seems like the thing to do. Here
are 5 tips on how to practice self-love!
1. Stop comparing yourself TO OTHers!
Comparing ourselves to others is natural and so easy to do. Especially
with the insane world of social media today. Between crazy filters
and photoshop it’s so hard (sometimes, ha!) to decipher what is
real and what is not, making it super easy to get down on ourselves.
It’s the fake perception that perfection is all around us. And this can
be so super dangerous. That’s why as women we must focus on our
own journey and forget about comparing. I always tell my clients to,
“focus on becoming the best version of themselves!” When you shift
the focus to being the best version of YOU, you’ll eliminate the need
to be like anyone else.
2. Remember your value doesn’t come from
a number on the scale!
This is fundamental! I see so many women get down
on themselves because they don’t like the number that
is popping up on the scale. This drives me crazy that
so many women let a number on a scale determine
how they feel about themselves. I have some clients
come for a check-in where I can tell them that
they lost 3lb of fat and gained 3lb of muscle and
they still get down on themselves because, “the
scale hasn’t moved!” It boggles my mind, but it is
real. So, if you are a slave to the scale, go home
and throw it away asap! A number should ever
dictate the value you put on yourself. You are
valuable because you are you, not because of
your what your scale reads.
3. Take time for you!
Another one that’s so much easier said than
done! As women we can quickly grow accustomed
to putting others first. We often play the role of busy
moms, caretakers, business owners, and often a mix
of all three. This can leave little time for ourselves and
60 | february 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
lead to burnout from everyday life quickly. That is why I believe in
giving yourself at a least one hour per day for you. Taking time to
decompress whether it be for a workout, a head-clearing walk, or
even just taking a long shower with no one bothering you! Surely all
moms can easily relate to that one! Find what helps you decompress
and dedicate time to this. This daily time to ourselves enables us to
show up better for others and help to keep our own tanks full. Life
is so much easier and sweeter when we are not running on empty!
4. Watch your WOrds!
The world is full of harsh words and critique — don’t add your
own inner voice to the mix. Speak kindly to yourself! Speak as
though you’re speaking to someone you love. Some of the things I
say to myself I would never say to anyone else. So why in the world
do we do this to ourselves? It’s such an ironic thing. A good idea is to
come up with a plan when a negative thought arises! Think of specific
affirmations to say to yourself! Replace one negative thought
with THREE positive ones every single time you start to talk negatively
to yourself!
5. Be proud of HOW far you’ve come!
Lastly try and celebrate your accomplishments. No
accomplishment is too small because each small accomplishment
is what leads to the bigger results in
the long run. Even though you may not be at your
goal yet, think of how far you have come on your
fitness journey. Can you do more push-ups now
than you could 6 months ago? Can you run a
little longer, than you did 2 weeks ago? Maybe
your diet isn’t exactly perfect, but are you making
better eating choices than you were a year ago?
There is always something positive to focus on
and celebrate, always! And lastly, be patient
with yourself. Self-love may not happen overnight
but with time, it will settle itself into
your mind, booty, and soul!
8 Great Places to Visit
in the UK, After London
By linda brown
If you’re planning a trip to the UK, chances are you’re heading to London,
but maybe no further. The buzzing metropolis draws millions of visitors
every year, and many people feel it offers all they could want. But the UK
is packed with other amazing places beyond London, each unique in some
special way, so make sure you don’t miss out. Here are eight highlights
around the country, for starters:
1. Cornwall & Devon
These two counties are in the southwest of England and are
one of Britain’s most popular tourist areas. Offering such variety
with their long sandy beaches, inlets, moorland, hills
and valleys. The North Atlantic coastline is popular with surfers
and the hiking is great! The South Coast Path is a 630-mile hiking
trail and follows this most dramatic of English coasts, round Land’s
End and the Lizard point, respectively the most westerly and most
southerly points in England.
2. Elegant Bath
The graceful, little city of Bath makes a refreshing antidote to
London. Take a stroll around the famous Royal Crescent, visit
the historic Roman Baths and sip the curative spring water
in the elegant, old Pump Room. You can do your gift shopping in
the tiny stalls that adorn the river bridge. Stay until nightfall and
witness the magical floodlights - there’s a fairytale element to Bath.
3, The Cotswolds
A
little further north, you will encounter the rolling farmland
of the Cotswolds, where the quaint, little stone cottages and
Norman churches will take you back through the centuries.
Stop off in a sleepy, old village, such as Bibury, and walk around the
amazingly preserved Roman villa near Chedworth. You’ll find plenty
of classy eating places and craft shops in this charming, “olde
worlde” region.
4. The Welsh mining valleys
There’s a harsh side to British history alongside the fairytale
one, and you’ll feel it in the old mining valleys of South Wales.
Drive over the stark mountains and view the rows of workers’
cottages, now painted in bright colors. Take the elevator down
The Big Pit and learn how tough life used to be for the coalminers.
Then you could step even further back through history with a roam
around Caerphilly Castle - but mind those spooky, spiral staircases.
5. Vibrant Manchester
Visit the beating heart of the north of England. You’ll feel the
buzz of Manchester life as soon as you arrive. Take a tram
ride around town and check out the latest events at the
many theatres and concert halls. You’ll find plenty of stand-up comedy
and other fun shows in Manchester, and plenty of sport, too, as
well as top-notch culture.
64 | february 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
6. The Lake District
Around the coastline from Manchester, you will find the romantic,
hidden world of The Lake District. Climb the dramatic
mountains and take a boat trip around beautiful Lake Windermere,
the largest of the sixteen gleaming waters. Then you can ride
through the magical scenery on a splendid, vintage steam train.
7. Historic Edinburgh
Venture over the rugged border of Scotland - scene of many
a historic battle - and head north to Edinburgh for another
great experience. With the imposing castle on its great rock
and bagpipe music in the air, you will know you’ve arrived. How
about donning a kilt and joining in a Scottish dance reel? You would
certainly deserve a stick of delicious “Edinburgh Rock” after that.
COPYRIGHTED
8. York and the Yorkshire Dales
As you head back south to London, drop in on the ancient city
of York. Step inside the resplendent York Minster, browse
the little shops in the old Shambles district, then join an after-dark
ghost-walk around the twisty, cobbled streets. Take a drive
over Yorkshire’s wild moors and pretty dales, and make sure you
try all the local cakes, pies, and ales on your way through.
There are plenty more special places to see while you’re over in
Britain, not just in these parts but across the water in Ireland, too.
Browse the sightseeing websites and ask fellow travelers for their
recommendations. There is something for everyone in the UK.

Open Celebrates 25 Years
of Tennis in Delray Beach!
The Delray Beach Open
(yellowtennisball.com) is back
for its 31st year, celebrating
its 25th anniversary in Delray
Beach, Florida.
The Palm Beach County stop on the global ATP Tour annually plays
in front of over 60,000 fans in addition to reaching television audiences
in over 50 countries over the course of 10 days. The 2023
tournament, which will be held Feb. 10-19 at the Delray Beach Stadium &
Tennis Center on Atlantic Avenue in downtown Delray Beach, Florida, will
feature even more new events, food & beverage offerings and specialty
nights than ever before!
“We are thrilled to once again have some of the top stars from the ATP
Tour coming to play in Delray Beach this year,” said Mark Baron, Tournament
Director. “That on top of the fantastic off-court special events we
have planned, including VIP receptions and parties, luncheons, and activities
with our non-profit partners, should make this year’s Delray Beach
Open the best yet. It will all serve as a great celebration of the tournament’s
25 years in Delray Beach.”
The tournament has been both a launching pad for stardom and a place
for the game’s elite to raise the trophy. Recent Delray Beach champions
include Grand Slam semifinalists Cameron Norrie (2022 Wimbledon),
Frances Tiafoe (2022 US Open), Hubert Hurkacz (2021 Wimbledon)
and hometown hero Reilly Opelka. In 2014, Marin Cilic hoisted the Delray
Beach Open trophy before winning the US Open later that year. Juan Martin
joined by Grand Slam champions Luke and Murphy Jensen, DBO singles
champions Jan-Michael Gambill, Sam Querrey and Ivo Karlovic, as well
DBO co-emcee Jesse Levine for the legends event opening weekend.
Singles and doubles main draw action for the ATP 250 event starts
Monday, Feb. 13 and concludes with the finals on Sunday, Feb. 19. A
strong player field is already committing to battle at the quarter-century
celebration including world top 10 player American Taylor Fritz. Fan
favorite John Isner of the US will bring his big serve to the tournament
for the ninth time. Adding to its top-flight player lineup, the Delray Beach
Open announced that former champion Reilly Opelka has committed to
A full-service builder, Bella Homes
possesses a unique focus on
eco-luxury initiatives and clean,
modern design.
Every Bella Home is Certified Green by the Florida Green Building
Coalition, with LED lighting, energy-efficient appliances,
smart home technology, and more. From functional designs
to gorgeous custom finishes, there’s something special about every
single Bella Home. The Bella Homes team pours their heart and soul
into each home they build. With Managing Partner Stephen Petrucci’s
personal approach, the team is hands-on to ensure the details held to
their high standards.
CUSTOM HOMES
Working with clients on every detail of the home, Bella customizes
the build to match the client’s vision from architectural to interior design.
It’s about creating a home that supports the client’s lifestyle and
that process starts with a conversation and getting to know the client.
Bella Home’s in-house interior design team works directly with the
client in putting together the look and feel of the home from concept
to completion. The design is not complete until the house is furnished.
Having direct access to a full-service design team streamlines the entire
process for the client.
COPYRIGHTED
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
Stephen kick started his career right out of college at a young age.
By building his career from the ground up, he entered the real estate
industry and now focuses on understanding the client and what he or
she wants and needs in a new home. Originally from New York, Stephen
moved to Florida in the ‘90s and has made it his home ever since.
He articulates, “My background studying Real Estate and Finance at
Florida State University allowed for an easy transition into the world
of real estate, starting on the financial side and quickly moving on to
build custom homes.”

HOME IS WHERE THE FAMILY IS
Happily married since 2005, Stephen has two daughters and a son.
“Family is the most important aspect of my life, so we treat every Sunday
as a family day dedicated to spending time together. When we can,
we love going on family vacations as much as possible,” says Stephen.
When he’s not working, Stephen loves making time to catch up with
friends and family. He spends his days off enjoying the beautiful Florida
weather by playing golf or heading to the beach.
THE FOCUS BEHIND eacH CLIENT
The high demand for eco-luxury homes in the Palm Beach County
market has made Bella Homes’ growth. The company consistently has
between six to twelve active projects, with new developments available
to top producers at a pre-market level. “We’re constantly updating
our website to keep our partners up to date with every project,
including realistic renderings, construction progress footage, and detailed
brochures that notate the features and specs of each home,” says
Stephen. Stephen loves the challenge of collaborating with his creative
team and contractors to consistently bring innovative designs to the
custom home market. “To me, success lives in the team you surround
yourself with,” says Stephen. “It’s impossible to do everything yourself,
so working with amazing people on a day-to-day basis allows me to go
home and have that reward of spending time with my family. I truly enjoy
being surrounded by an incredible team and working together to
bring our vision to life. You can’t be just one person; you have to build a
team around it – that’s success.” In closing, Stephen says, “I want to be
remembered for having a quality, amazing product. I’m proud to play a
role in changing the landscape of South Florida. Driving down streets
and seeing homes I’ve built is a really exciting thing, so to have people
drive through South Florida and see all the different Bella Homes and
communities – that’s what I want to be remembered for.”
BELLA’S CURRENT proJECTS
Bella Homes recently sold four properties and actively has six properties
in the works. From transitional modern masterpieces in Boca
Raton to coastal modern masterpieces in Ocean Ridge, Bella brings the
utmost superior quality to each home. In Delray, we have the stunning
Vineyard collection consisting of four beautiful Bella Homes located in
a highly sought after Lake Ida neighborhood. Each home is a modern
Nantucket style influenced by the quaint New England Island off Massachusetts.
They offer
peaceful seclusion minutes away from the famous downtown Delray
Beach. In Boca Raton, we currently have one property in progress
which is located in Fieldbrook Estates and one located in Le Rivage
which is already finished and happily lived in. Fieldbrook is a recently
completed stunning new construction home featuring an expansive
loggia area that overlooks a gorgeous lake, newly on the market. Le
Rivage is a newly completed construction modern masterpiece in
an exclusive Boca Raton neighborhood on a lakefront lot. In Ocean
Ridge, we have two magnificent Bella properties coming together. One
on North Ocean Boulevard with beach access & breathtaking ocean
views. This home is a very rare opportunity as it is an open concept
home that invites modern clean lines, warm woods, & stone touches.
Our second location is a Coastal Model Home that is perfectly nestled
in exclusive McCormick Mile. This beautiful island home features a
resort-like view of the canal, with the opportunity to dock your boat in
your own backyard!
World Crystal
Bringing the Beauty of
Gemstones into the Light
By diane feen
There is a difference between a
shop for browsing and a gallery
that wows you with excellence.
World Crystal is both. It’s part museum and part gift shop
with gemstones at its core.
But don’t let the word gemstones scare you into thinking
that you don’t need another piece of art sitting on your bookshelf.
Quite to the contrary, World Crystal has beautiful items made
from rare gemstones in all colors and for every occasion. Want a set
of goblets in marbled white and bronze onyx? How about a cheese
cutter made of gemstones with gold electroplated edging?
The beauty of these items defies imagination, yet they are so
practical you’ll wonder why you never saw them before. The answer
is quite simple; few places sell this quantity and quality of
gemstone pieces in the city (or the country).
The person who brought these keepsakes and home décor items
to the United States is Marcelo Neves. The Brazilian native has
worked in his grandfather’s gemstone business in Goiás, Brazil,
since he was five. Back then, his grandfather collected gemstones
to sell to shop owners and collectors. Soon he opened a mine and
began to bring rare gemstones to the surface, where they could be
Marcelo Neves with his children at world crystal’s grand opening
70 | february 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
made into gift items, jewelry, and spiritual healing crystals.
Marcelo began wholesaling the gemstones as an adult but soon
realized he wanted to share these aesthetic treasures with others.
He also dreamed of coming to the US and finding a location where
the gemstones could bring harmony and happiness to others.
On his first visit to Delray Beach, Marcelo felt a synergy and simpatico
with his surroundings. He also had a feeling that the mystical
quality of his gemstones and artifacts would be a perfect fit for
residents and visitors of Delray.
“I wanted to do something that had a lot of meaning. I searched
for a location, and I fell in love with Delray. I felt the energy of the
crystals and the environment were in perfect sync.”
Marcelo could not have been more on target. This brightly lit
shop is like a museum where you can touch and buy rare one-of-akind
gemstones for décor, gifts, and healing crystals. It’s the perfect
fit for a beach town that values beauty and quality.
World Crystal is a world of beauty encapsulating reality’s more
magnificent aspects. There are tiny gemstone bonsai trees on onyx
stands with gold plating and wood branches. Pink onyx birds seem to
flit upward perched on a quartz and tourmaline stand, and colorful
gemstone clocks have gold numerals. It’s hard not to fall in love with
the pink amethyst heart held firmly in place on a black onyx base.
Marcelo Neves, owner
This gallery boutique has large one-of-a-kind gemstones that can
hold court in a home or an office building, but people love them for
varying reasons.
Some people collect gemstones for their beauty and décor, others
seek them out for gifts, and still, others understand their inherent
healing energy. Metaphysically speaking, there are healing gemstones
for every part of the body. And World Crystal has them all.
You can buy a package of Chakra stones that will guide you toward
a more enlightened existence. If you are not feeling the vibe
– but are open to the beauty of rare gemstones - you will still be enamored
with the textured emerald alligators and matrix chamber
ammonite fossils.
Many gemstones bring a mystical charge to help release energies
that could block your highest aspirations. As the story goes – the
spiral shape of ammonites are symbols of change and positive motion.
The spiral draws in negative energy, filtering it through the
chambers and releasing fresh, positive energy.
On a more practical note, there are bookends made of quartz
and agate, gemstone candleholders with electroplated gold inlay,
fuchsia quartz coasters with gold trim, two-tiered blue agate hors
d’oeuvre trays, and more.
Just recently, a visitor from Hawaii bought a large crystal Eagle
with an onyx and amethyst base. They also sold a large 6-foot
thinly cut onyx piece that is translucent enough to become a statuesque
light source.
World Crystal also has an entire collection of jewelry made of
fine crystals and gemstones. There are necklaces, rings, bracelets,
and keychains in every color of this precious rainbow. If you are
attuned to energy and vibrational flow, there are gemstones and
crystals to increase your energy flow and well-being.
“We know meditation works wonders for us - but you can increase
these benefits using the power of stones and crystals, said
Marcelo. “Just hold the stone or place it on the chakra you want to
work with, and picture what you want to improve. Amethyst, for
example, can increase your intuition and balance.”
There are so many gems and rare crystals to lighten up your
home and life; you must stop by this new Delray shop of wonders.
There are explanations for each crystal and gemstone and experts
to guide you toward the perfect piece. They have gemstone
chess sets, lamps, wood and gemstone cheeseboards, Mother Nature’s
most illustrious creatures, and everything in between.
The sizes range from very small to large pieces. Some are so precious
and colorful that they stand on their own as décor and emotional
upliftment.
The gemstones and crystals are from all over the world. They are
carefully curated and collected by Marcelo and his family.
Come to this eclectic shop that offers museum-quality precious gems
for any room of your home or your energetic harmony, and discover
these precious gemstones’ magical beauty and healing properties
A Little Wyld
The Fashion
Palace of Greatness
By Diane Feen | photos by melissa korman
A Little Wyld is a boutique that has
more in common with a museum
than a traditional retail store.
The reason is that owners Amanda Perna and Skye Dyer see
life on the bright side with colors that bloom in tandem with
your mood.
Luckily the weather forecast at this shop for children and adults
is perpetually on the sunny side. There might be cloudy days, but
you won’t feel anything less than optimal at this adorable Pineapple
Grove shop.
The clothing you see on the racks seems like those in a Hollywood
dressing room. Each item is so carefully curated it’s as if a
personal shopper was on site to tickle your fancy.
For the little ones, there are outfits fit for a queen (or a princess),
like pastel velour motorcycle jackets, feather-trimmed dresses,
tulle-tiered skirts, and everything in between. There are also colorful
dresses for women with novelty trim, cinched waist detail, fashionable
trousers, and more.
One thing is for sure; you won’t see these items anywhere else.
They are carefully chosen for their unique flair and sustainability.
“If you’re like us, you’re obsessed with colorful, one-of-a-kind, highquality,
ethical, sustainable, and a little bit of the unexpected.”
72 | february 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
That is why walking into this shop of wizardry is such a treat
and a treasure. Where else can you find Confetti Crayons in tonal
colors or handmade wood race cars (made in France) for your
fast-moving little one?
The depth and breadth of this shop defy gravity because the
owners have found that individuality has its rewards. “We carry
brands from all over the world that have clothing, accessories, and
toys that you won’t see anywhere else. We do a lot of research to
decide what will make our customers happy.”
You bet they do. Walking into A Little Wyld is the best pick me
up for fashion sake or a creative jolt. The owners, Amanda Perna
and Skye Dyer are artistic leaders in their field with a penchant for
kindness and courage.
Both women are mothers and wives whose only motive is to offer
others what they find uplifting. Others around town can feel the
difference between retail and renaissance in this material matter.
“A Little Wyld is my absolute favorite store for kids and women.
They have excellent bathing suits, clothes for every occasion and
toys! The owners curate the best of everything and have made it a
super fun shopping experience,” said Renee Phillips.
Phillips is right. Perna and Dyer are experts at finding things that
will put a smile on your face and pep in your step. They seek out
emerging designers who understand the fine details of fashion with
an upbeat flair for kids and adults.
Their shelves are stocked with European wooden toys and gift
items for any occasion. The shelves are also filled with hair acces-
sories, fashionable handbags, mini-acoustic guitars, artistic
greeting cards, and much more.
They have your back if you are busy but need to shop quickly.
“You can call the store and tell us what you’re looking for,
and we’ll send you photos and then ship what you like. Or you
can pull up in front of the store, and we will take out different
items to show you.”
These moms know how precious your time is and how a
simple task can complicate a busy day. Their retailing philosophy
is based on a high consciousness, not a high price tag. “We
try to make shopping as accessible and easy as possible and
also a pleasant experience. We also gift wrap your purchase
at no charge.”
A Little Wyld also caters to your desire for uniqueness and
creativity. That’s why they only order a limited quantity of
items, so you won’t see them elsewhere. If they are out of your
size, they will do their best to get it for you.
“We also try to protect the planet by buying items in recycled
materials that are going to last and be passed down to
others. Our toys and clothing will last for a long time. We pride
ourselves in that pursuit.”
They also offer unique, clever items that will fill you with
joy. Even band-aids come decorated with unicorns, spaceships,
and octopuses.
There are also decorative headbands by Amanda (a twotime
Project Runway contestant), jewelry for moms and little
ones, novelty candles, embroidered pillows, stuffed toys for
infants that vibrate, comfy novelty slippers, and gift items that
will wow your host.
The prices are affordable yet rich in style and structure.
There are ostrich feather bolero jackets, puff sleeve tops, sun
dresses in pop art prints for moms, and SPF-safe T-shirts and
swimwear for little ones.
They also have sale racks and an online shop (and Instagram
page) that will fill your imagination and closet. Shop or
browse in one of the most innovative, exciting shops in town.
It’s not just for kids – moms are also part of this retail gem.
“Our dream is simple - To infuse the bliss of childhood into
every product and shopping experience.
Engel & Völkers Delray
A Rare Combination of History
and Heritage Can Be Yours
By Diane Feen | photos by Ryin Gibbs
Delray Beach has become the celebrity
darling of the geographic lottery pool.
The Downtown area is an epicenter of culture, class, and real
estate royalty. Add that to the beautiful waterways and alluring
nighttime restaurants (and shops), and you have a
utopian landscape.
It seems everyone – from all corners of the globe – wants a part
of downtown Delray Beach. Especially one with a water view that
beckons you with its natural artistic sunrises and illustrious skylines.
That dream can be yours at 46 Marine Way.
This multi-level historic home was built in 1922 and is believed
to be of Addison Mizner heritage. The house was brought to Delray
by barge from Boca Raton (the home of this aristocratic design
sensibility) and is now firmly planted in front of the Intracoastal
waterway just steps from Atlantic Avenue.
74 | february 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
COPYRIGHTED
The stucco home has stately iron rod gates, an in-ground swimming
pool, a courtyard with a guest house, and beautiful Key West
style privacy courtesy of Mother Nature’s green.
One of its most auspicious selling points is its waterfront patronage,
which includes a view of the Delray Beach Marina and a slice
of heaven on the marina where you can sit and enjoy the view (or
keep your boat) on your private 53-foot dock.
“This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of waterfront property
in downtown Delray Beach. This Palm Beach style Mizner Mediterranean
home is directly across from the Delray Beach Marina with
outstanding views of the Intracoastal Waterway,” said private advisor-Broker
Leanna Fruin of Engel & Voelkers Delray Beach.
This charming waterfront home (with a private dock) will transport

you to an iconic landmark of Florida
history that is rarely experienced but
often talked about. The main house
features a one-bedroom, one-bath
home with the character and iconic
status of its creator, Addison Mizner.
It has a stucco exterior with terracotta
tiles, Pecky Cypress wood beam ceilings,
and Dade County Pine floors.
“There is also ample room to build
onto the home with new construction.
The opportunity is to take this vintage historic Florida facade
and turn it into a modern version of its heritage in downtown Delray,”
said Fruin, who adds that the property features a private easement to
the 53 feet of direct Intracoastal views with a deck and floating dock.
Also exciting is the upcoming plan for the City of Delray Beach to
add a seawall, brick paved street, and pedestrian walkway linking
Veterans Park to the Marina.
You can also walk to Delray’s vibrant Atlantic Avenue boutiques,
fine dining restaurants, and dynamic nightlife. It’s also a short walk
to award-winning pristine beaches and oceanfront panacea.
The home is south of the Atlantic Avenue bridge in the Historic
Marina District of Delray Beach. According to Fruin, this property
is a treasure that combines the past and present with a vision for
the future.
As for its investment opportunities, Fruin has this to say. “This
home is an iconic part of the scenic downtown Delray Beach waterscape.
The lot offers a tremendous opportunity to combine a
historic gem with modern-day living as a primary residence or
income-producing property. The two units in the best possible location
is perfect for short-term rentals with room to add value. All
that Delray Beach has to offer is at the doorstep!”
Fruin is an industry top producer with over 23 years of experience
selling South Florida luxury properties. She has achieved
unparalleled results and represents the highest level of luxury real
estate service the industry offers.
“I feel honored to represent like-minded people who understand
the uniqueness of the area.”
Also coming up in the immediate area is the Atlantic Crossing
mixed-use development. There will be additional upscale restaurants
and shops as well as nightlife opportunities.
The home is co-listed with Leanna Fruin and Savannah Fruin. Leanna
is a Broker Owner with Engel & Völkers and is one of only approximately
220 Private Office advisors
worldwide and one of only 21 Private
Office advisors in all of Florida, representing
the highest level of real estate
service the industry offers. Savannah
Fruin is an award-winning luxury waterfront
specialist and prides herself
in fulfilling the lifestyle needs of the
newest generations of wealth.
“We wanted to find our dream
home, not a simple request, on the
water, in Delray, and near the beach. Within days Savannah found
us an off-market property and connected us with our builder. A
perfect lot three houses from the beach, we could not be happier.
Savannah guided us through the whole process, and we are about
to move into our dream home. We are so thankful for what Savannah
did for us,” said Bill Hicks
With the luxury market tightening in south Florida, the Fruin
team has had great success assisting their clients with value-added
opportunity investments, whether it be constructing their dream
home with built-in equity, finding multi-tiered, value-added development
opportunities for all levels of investors or assisting owners
in determining the highest and best use in valuing their asset.
“We are here for you throughout the journey from scouting locations
to vetting architects and builders and recommending the
most talented designers. We have experience, knowledge, training,
high-tech access, and unmatched marketing capabilities. We have a
local, domestic, and international network to ensure competence to
meet your real estate needs.”
They also recently opened a Yacht Division in the Engel & Völkers
Florida network. Fruin’s husband, John, is licensed with the Yachting
Division.
they offer services and products guaranteed to put the pep
Massage Heights Delray gives you options that best suit your
lifestyle and preference. They offer hot stone massage, deep tissue,
and Swedish massages.
They also go the extra mile to ensure you get what your body
a youthful, glowing complexion. If you prefer an alternative service,
such as aromatherapy, it’s complimentary with every service. They
also offer assorted facials by professionally trained spa aestheticians.
The Essential Facial is for routine care, and the Clear Skin Facial
is focused on treating blemishes. Each facial is customized for your
specific skin type and your treatment goals.
For Massage Heights Delray owner Angela Wright, the need for spa
treatments and their effect on the health and wellness of clients was
always paramount. “I choose this career because I love to help people
Wendy Kupfer
Real Estate By Relationship
By nicol jenkins | photos by andrea blakesberg
Wendy Kupfer
embodies the meaning
of the word passionate.
A
seasoned professional with decades of experience guiding
clients through complex financial decisions as a former Citigroup
VP and Private Banker, Wendy now serves her community
as an agent with Balistreri Real Estate, where she specializes
in helping buyers and sellers navigate Palm Beach County’s
luxury real estate market.
Originally from Philadelphia, Wendy has lived in South Palm
Beach County for thirty-five years, raising her children and serving
multiple non-profit board positions, including the Rotary Club
of Boca Raton’s first female president. She is also the author of an
award-winning children’s book, “Let’s Hear It for Almigal!”
Her passion for helping others has allowed Wendy to successfully
transition from banking executive and author to South Palm
Beach County’s local real estate expert.
Wendy’s real estate practice is influenced by the concierge approach
that is the backbone of private banking: She chooses not to
take on too many clients at once so that she can focus on each client.
When representing buyers in their search for luxury properties,
from country club communities to waterfront estates, Wendy
78 | february 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
first seeks to understand their unique goals and then leverages her
negotiating skills and neighborhood expertise to give her clients a
leading edge over the competition.
When representing sellers, Wendy has an extensive marketing
plan to get the house sold for the highest price and in the shortest
amount of time. “I work very hard and go above and beyond for
each and every buyer and seller,” says Wendy. “When you hire me,
you get ME…never an assistant or a lockbox! I am personally at each
and every open house and each and every showing. Who you work
with matters!”
Wendy knows that impeccable marketing is the key to selling
her clients’ properties for top dollar. “The real estate market is still
thriving in Palm Beach County because it is a luxury home market.
Many clients are buying second or third homes, and pricing is still
strong. When the homes are staged, priced, and marketed properly,
they sell.” she adds.
Her brokerage, Balistreri Real Estate, offers a wealth of resources
that amplify these efforts. As a member of Luxury Portfolio International,
an elite group of the world’s top real estate companies, Balistreri
offers Wendy access to agents worldwide to help her seamlessly
serve out-of-state or international clients alike. Whether they’re looking
for existing homes or new construction, Wendy can easily guide
non-local clients through the entire process virtually. Most importantly,
her concierge approach means that she is always available to
answer her customers’ questions and assist them in any way possible.
“The real estate market is always adjusting, and
it’s important to stay current and to be at the top
of your game to provide the best possible client
experience.” Additionally, Wendy is coached by
Tom Ferry, the #1 coaching organization in real
estate. She is constantly learning and growing to
improve her clients’ experience.
Her resources, contacts, intimate knowledge
of the local market, and strong business acumen
have contributed to Wendy’s reputation for exceptional
client service. She works tirelessly to
serve her client’s best interests, and her clients
reward her efforts with enduring business relationships
that often blossom into friendships.
Here’s what some of her clients have to say:
“Wendy Kupfer is the consummate professional,
providing the perfect combination of expertise
and heart. She consistently strives for excellence
on behalf of her clients and makes every
challenge along the way a little easier with her
positive spirit and can-do attitude. She brings a
wealth of market knowledge and design sensibility
to her work, and working with her has been a
joy. I cannot recommend Wendy enough,” stated
client Richard Ditizio, President and COO at the
Milkin Institute.
“I have worked with many Realtors and can attest
that Wendy Kupfer is one of the most dynamic
and conscientious professionals out there, a true
‘people person’ whose genuine passion for client
service infuses every interaction with integrity
and warmth that sets her apart from others in the
industry. From our very first conversation, I knew
Wendy would be a delight to work with, and she’s
never let me down since!” stated Jess M.
“Working with Wendy Kupfer at Balistreri
Real Estate to both sell and buy a home was
an efficient and enjoyable experience. Wendy’s
ability to understand my needs, coupled with
her knowledge of the market, made the process
quick and easy, from helping me prepare my
house for showings to the listings we visited.
I felt as though I was Wendy’s most important
client. Wendy was always available to answer
my questions, making me feel as though I had
a friend on the “inside.” Wendy took the time
to explain everything, from making an offer to
working with the mortgage broker and the HOA.
The process from start to finish was personal
and professional, and I am thrilled to have found
my dream home! Whatever your real estate
goals, Wendy’s personal attention will help you
achieve your personal vision,” stated Vicki.
America’s Most
Romantic Small City
Delray Beach
By Linda brown
Delray Beach is known as a two-time All America City and
was named America’s Most Fun Small Town, but those in the
know—know that at its heart Delray Beach is a romantic city.
From quaint hotel properties and a
vast array of spas to beautiful ocean
views and romantic wine dinners,
Delray has it all and there’s no place better
than the village by the sea to spend Valentine’s
Day.
Here’s a few off the beaten path options
we hope you’ll explore.
Staycations — From the high end
and historic to boutique options and family
owned properties, Delray has quietly
become a great place to spend a weekend
living like a tourist.
About a decade ago, city leaders lamented
the lack of hotel rooms, but a
mini-boomlet of construction has suddenly
made Delray a hot place to stay for a long
weekend.
If you like historic lodging, consider either
the Sundy House, home of Delray’s first
mayor, or the Colony Hotel, which is considered
one of America’s most historic hotels,
and it might be haunted, rumor has it.
For a boutique option check out elegant
but casual Crane’s Beach House.
Luxury options also abound with the
magnificent Seagate Hotel leading the way.
So next time you consider gassing up the
car and getting out of Dodge, treat your significant
other to a long weekend right here
at home. There are plenty of cool options.
Nature — Delray has built an international
reputation for marrying small town
charm with big city amenities, but what’s
great about Delray is with a little effort you
can get lost in beautiful Florida nature.
Consider a visit to the underrated Lake Ida
Park which has miles of trails, an incredible
dog park, abundant wildlife, great bird watching
and a huge lake to fish, jet ski or boat.
Another romantic option for the nature
lover is Morikami Park, which features romantic
solitude minutes from downtown
Delray. The park and gardens are gorgeous
and provides many opportunities for picnics
and exploration.
Morikami’s gardens, a must see, is named
Roji-en: Garden of the Drops of Dew.
The six gardens were designed to be a
living exhibit complementing the museum.
Designer Hoichi Kurisu sought to create
a garden complex for the new millennium
and trust us he succeeded.
The gardens are inspired by, but are not
replicas of, famous gardens in Japan.
Says Kurisu: “My hope is that a visit to
the gardens will genuinely and deeply
touch each individual’s life. My hope is that
progressive ideas will be born and that action
will take root here, that the intuitive
conviction of such enduring qualities as
beauty, love, health and wholeness, integrity,
creativity, renewal, and selflessness
will be strengthened.
I will have accomplished my goal if visitors
to the gardens come away refreshed
and feeling better about themselves and
their world while looking forward to sharing
their experiences here with others.”
We also highly recommend a stroll along
the beach or beachside promenade, soon
to be improved as a result of great work
by the Beach Property Owners Association
and local architectural icon Bob Currie.
We remain amazed at the amount of people
who live here and don’t visit the ocean.
We advise you to take advantage this Valentine’s
Day.
CULTURE — Nothing says romance better
than sharing a meaningful cultural experience.
The Arts Garage has pushed the envelope
with provocative musical and theater
performances designed to rev your engine
and fire up your imagination.
On the February 4th enjoy The Motowners
Ultimate Motown Show Experience.
The Motowners are an amazing Motown
Tribute Band performing an array of Motown’s
Greatest Hits. Their repertoire is extensive
covering such groups as The Temptations,
The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, The
Supremes, Martha & The Vandellas, Mary
Wells and more. The artist’s collective
talent includes fine vocals and precision
moves featuring a variety of lead vocals.
The Motowners have performed on the
same stage as national artists and as well
as performed before high profile individuals
such as First Lady Michelle Obama. The
Motowners’ shows are nostalgic, classic,
upbeat and inspire singing along and dancing.
“Once you see a Motowners Show, you
can’t wait to see them again”, said by many.
They bring back memories of times past
and leave you with a happy feeling. Visit
www.artsgarage.org for more performances,
tickets and more information.
You may also want to stop by Arts Garage
during Downtown Delray’s First Friday
Art Walk on February 3rd from 6pm-
8pm. Tour their current exhibit and meet
Delray’s emerging artists in front of their
work. First Friday Art Walk is a night for
strolling and discovering the vibrant art
scene in Downtown Delray Beach through
a self-guided tour of Art Galleries & Studios,
featuring a myriad of artistic styles,
live entertainment, and more.
How Do We Count the Ways?
For most people, there are 24 hours in a day. Most
people hit the couch or turn on the TV when work or
family responsibilities are over. Not Deborah Dowd.
The former teacher - and inveterate volunteer – seems to have
created a life that is not measured in time but in activities. But
not the typical activities like shopping, but those more aligned
with her Catholic upbringing.
One has to wonder, is this woman living on an earth plane that has
36 hours in a day? Does she have a secret to accomplishing more in a
day than most people do in a week?
Perhaps, but she is not talking about time. On the contrary, she talks
about things she is passionate about, which are many.
Since she was a teen, Dowd set her sights on becoming an elementary
school teacher. She started teaching first grade at Spady (making
$7000 a year) and ended up teaching in Palm Beach County for
39 years. She was a teacher trainer, resource teacher, and District Coordinator
of ESOL. Dowd also took a sabbatical and attended the University
of London to get a master’s degree in International Education.
Though her Aunt Honey was her inspiration for going into elementary
education, it was her family tree that planted other seeds for
Dowd’s eventual destiny.
Her father James Clancy owned Christmas tree farms, so 10-yearold
Deborah helped with the trimming each spring. She also joined a
neighborhood garden club as a youngster.
“My mom, Mary Lou, gave me a small space to create my own garden
at age 8. I grew up in Fayetteville, New York, where there were rolling
hills and lots of land.”
She also attended Catholic schools from kindergarten to college. To
some, this might seem a hardship, but not to Dowd, who relished the
experience. “We loved my teachers, who were nuns. I still remember
all their names from every grade,” said Dowd, who easily rattles off
their names on cue.
Dowd has always been a multi-tasker. While teaching, in the 80s,
she opened a candy store. She did the accounting, managing, hiring,
and selling.
Though she is known for her sweet spot – it was not Dowd’s idea to
delve into the world of retail. “My father said, ‘She’s not getting married
and not making much money, so let’s get this going.’” The store in
Coral Springs did get going. But after five years of working weekends
and after school, she decided to close it.
But her sense of community was still her North Star. She started the
Seacrest Neighborhood Association, helped change zoning laws, and
partnered with the CRA to ensure the neighborhood’s beautification.
Dowd was also on city zoning and site planning boards and task
teams and served on winning All-America City committees.
In 2012 she officially retired from teaching and set her sights on
fulfilling her other mission –giving back to the community.
As a board member of the Achievement Centers for Children & Families,
Deborah volunteers for community events and spends time with
the children. She is also chairman of the Home Tour volunteers (100 of
them) for their March 15 event.
Those around her are amazed at the selflessness of Dowd’s philanthropic
orbit.
“Deborah is a volunteer you can always count on. It’s not unusual
to find her at the Achievement Centers in the gardens planting with
the children, reading books in the classrooms, helping students with
homework, or assisting with our events,” said Stephanie Seibel, CEO of
Achievement Centers.
Dowd has also been a devoted Old School Square board member
and Vice Chair for five years. “I go back to OSS from its inception. I
taught summer school at Delray Elementary School.”
She is also on the board of Impact 100 PBC and is involved in their
grant committee. Dowd also attends events by Roots and Wings and
Community Greening and is known – and revered – for her gardening
skills.
After she retired from teaching, Dowd took courses to become a master
gardener. True to her roots, she delved into this moniker with the
same enthusiasm and passion she brings to everything else. “I started
a veggie garden with kids at Achievement Centers and taught butterfly
gardening. Organizations have raffled me off to make butterfly gardens.”
They have also taken note of Dowd’s innate goodness. “I adore
Deborah. She is the consummate volunteer with a heart for children
and building community. If there’s a good cause, you can bet Deborah
will be volunteering. She never seeks attention or thanks, but those
of us who have worked alongside her know she’s invaluable. She has
touched generations,” said Jeff Perlman.
Though her volunteer activities and community building are masterclass,
Dowd sees them as part and parcel of being human. “I have
volunteered since I was in middle school. I babysat for little children
during Sunday mass so their parents could be devoted to mass. Volunteering
is part of my core and my family upbringing.”
Others around her see more than her enormous heart for helping
good causes. “Deborah is an incredibly giving person and a dedicated
friend who would do anything for you,” said master gardener (and fellow
volunteer at Daggerwing Nature Center) Sheila Bell.
Kari Shipley also sees Dowd’s golden heart in hues of light that surround
her. “Deborah’s positive attitude, kindness, and competency are
appreciated by everyone. She is tenacious, hard-working and can be
counted on to give her all with grace and a smile. She has made Delray
and PBC a better place to live.”
Frances Bourque agrees.
“I don’t believe there is one facet of this town Deborah has not put
her imprint on, including OSS, the Achievement Centers, and Mounts
Botanical Garden. All garnering her the prestigious Woman of Grace
Award in 2018.”
Dowd is an avid swimmer, gourmet cook, dog lover (she rescued
her golden retriever Muna), sports fan, and gardener. “I measure happiness
through my journeys and experiences that I am blessed to be
engaged in.”
dining | RECIPE
A Recipe for Romance
Whether you’re in a relationship or a
situationship, here are some ideas and a recipe
to get your evening off to a romantic start!
When planning a romantic dinner, don’t
forget to consider lighting, music,
decor, and of course, the food and drinks.
Candles and soft music are a great way to set
the mood for romance. Unscented candles
are best since they won’t interfere with
the flavors of the food you plan on serving.
INGREDIENTS
Four 8-ounce raw lobster tails in the shell,
thawed if frozen
6 tablespoons unsalted butter
One 10-ounce package frozen chopped
spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
Zest of 1/2 lemon (about 1 teaspoon),
plus wedges for serving
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
One 4-ounce package sliced fancy mixed
mushrooms
2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
2 sheets frozen puff pastry
(from a 17.3-ounce package), thawed
1 large egg, beaten
Outdoor dining can create a beautiful
ambiance by placing candles inside glass
candle holders.
Table decor can include fresh flowers or a
handwritten menu. Extend the same ambiance
throughout the home so you can continue the
romance long after dinner is over.
directions
Wine, champagne, lobster, and chocolate
are popular choices for a romantic dinner.
Below is a simple but elegant lobster dish to
serve your love on the 14th. Round out the
meal with a simple arugula salad, chocolate
covered strawberries, and bubbles or wine,
and you’re almost guaranteed a nightcap.
1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Position a wire rack on a baking sheet and set aside.
Bring a small pot of water to a boil.
2. Put the lobster tails in a large heat safe bowl, pour in boiling water to cover and let sit
until the shells just begin to turn orange, about 4 minutes.
3. Use kitchen shears to cut the shells and remove them from the meat. Insert a wooden
skewer lengthwise through each tail so that the lobster stays flat and does not curl up
while cooking. Set the tails aside.
4. Microwave 4 tablespoons of the butter in a medium microwave-safe bowl in 30-second
intervals until melted, about 1 minute. Stir in the spinach, garlic, lemon zest, a large pinch
of salt and a few grinds of pepper; set aside.
5. Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons butter in a medium nonstick skillet over mediumhigh
heat. Add the mushrooms, thyme, a pinch of salt and a few grinds of pepper and cook,
stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are soft and starting to turn brown in spots,
about 5 minutes.
6. Roll each puff pastry sheet into an 11-inch square. Spread half of the spinach mixture
on each sheet and sprinkle with half of the mushrooms. Cut each sheet in half, making 4
rectangles. Place a lobster tail at one end of each rectangle, parallel with the short side.
Roll the pastry pieces around the lobster and transfer to the prepared baking sheet. Brush
the pastry with the beaten egg.
7. Bake until deep golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes. Remove the skewers, slice widthwise
into pieces and serve with lemon wedges.
dining | RECIPE
Tuscan Porterhouse
Steak with Red Wine
Peppercorn Au Jus
Nothing says ‘I love you’ like a home cooked meal. If you decide to stay
in for Valentine’s Day (or any day), treat your loved one to a delicious
steak candlelit dinner. A Porterhouse Steak is the perfect steak for
two to share because it contains two large portions of everyone’s two
favorite cuts of meat on either side of the center bone: the top loin -
also known as New York Strip, and tenderloin - or filet mignon.
INGREDIENTS
1 (1 1/2 pound) Porterhouse Steak
(1 - 1 1/4 inches thick)
2 Tsp coarsely crushed black peppercorns
2 Tsp Kosher salt
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
3 Tbsp unsalted butter - cut into tablespoon
pieces - divided
3 Garlic cloves crushed
2 (4 inch) Sprigs fresh rosemary
5 Sprigs fresh thyme
1/2 Cup medium bodied dry wine
(merlot, Rioja, Chianti)
1 Cup low sodium chicken broth
98 | February 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Let steak sit at room temperature for 15 minutes.
Pat steak dry and season with peppercorns and Kosher salt on both sides.
In a 12 inch ovenproof heavy skillet, heat oil and 1 tablespoon of butter over medium
heat until butter melts. Add rosemary, thyme, and garlic - cook over medium
heat, stirring occasionally, until herbs and garlic become fragrant - about 1 minute.
Add steak and cook until nicely browned* - approximately 3 minutes on each side. Transfer
skillet to oven and cook about 5 minutes for medium rare, 10 minutes for medium.
Transfer steak to a platter and let rest for 10 minutes, reserve juices in the skillet.
Leaving garlic and herbs in the skillet, pour off the oil. Add wine and bring to a boil
over medium high heat, while scraping up browned bits, until reduced by half -
about 2 minutes. Add chicken broth and any juices from the platter where the steak
rests, boil until reduced by half - about 5 to 6 minutes. Whisk in the remaining 2
tablespoons of butter until well blended. Season to taste with salt and keep warm.
Transfer steak to cutting board and cut meat off both sides of the bone. Thinly slice
each piece and rearrange the slices around the bone on a platter. Drizzle with au jus.
Serve with a simple vegetable or salad as a side, and a nice red wine.
*When browning the steak, let it cook undisturbed - only flipping once - so a nice
crust forms.
misc | ask the petxpert
BY Bill Piechocki and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM
What are the Invisible
Health Risks in Your Home?
Our pets today are truly family members, sharing our lives
and living space. We invest our time, energy, and money to
keep them safe, happy, and healthy. From pet health care insurance
to the selections of veterinarians, groomers, trainers, and
foods and products, we are always seeking the best for the furry
members of our family.
Modern technology has brought us many health and sanitation innovations
designed to make ourselves and our pets live better. However,
we are seeing more diseases and health and well-being challenges
than ever before. Why can’t we see all the causes?
From minute particles in our air that settle on the ground and floor
to the chemicals and products we use to clean, sanitize and deodorize
our shared space with our pets, it can harm everyone’s health. The reason
is that many of these causes are invisible. Because our pets often
eat, sleep and live on the floor and ground, they are exposed to even
more compounds we do not see. We wear shoes and clothing preventing
us from absorbing these compounds directly through our skin. We
also wash our hands, bathe and clean our space regularly, which our
pets rely entirely on us, their caregivers.
Our pets are constantly bombarded with hundreds of unnatural
chemical compounds on a moment-to-moment basis. They absorb
the compounds from that no-rinse floor cleaner you use when they
are walking and sleeping on the floor. Deodorizing air freshening
sprays, plug-ins, and even some essential oils you used have now
settled on those same floors, often combining with your floor cleaning
product to create new poisons. Add to that the insecticidal, mold,
and mildew sanitizers, and our pets can be living in a toxic wasteland
in the name of clean.
We all believe we are using the safest, most natural products we
can find. However, no matter how much research, reading, or investigating
we do, do we really know the true nature of these products
and their safety? You see in the marketing “all natural.” Do you
equate that with safe or healthy? Is it a product found in nature or
its natural state, or has it been processed or altered along the way?
We know advertising and marketing laws allow companies to hide
certain compounds and processes. These hidden factors can alter the
safety and toxicity of the product.
We exercise and walk our pets outside and expose them to everything
that falls from the sky, the lawn and landscaping products, and
even cleaners and emissions from our vehicles which add to the toxic
load in the body that is the cause of most diseases.
While you can now see the causes, we can help our pets build immunity
and detoxify their bodies with the right foods and nutrition. Clean,
species-appropriate foods are the base for a healthy lifestyle and disease
prevention. Clean water is also essential in this process and eliminating
toxic drugs. The cleanest environment around the pets can also
help. Our pets deserve the best that we can offer.
