FROM THE NOTEBOOK...

THE

GAFFER

Welcome back to Deepdale this afternoon for the visit of Bristol City.

It’s the start of what will be a

busy month of Championship

action, with many of those

games coming here at home.

Today, we’ve got to try and back

up what we did in the win at

Birmingham City in our last league

game a couple of weeks ago.

I thought we were excellent there,

and the performance definitely

warranted the three points.

Then the performance in the cup last

weekend was fantastic out of possession,

but that’s gone now and we’ve got

to focus on building in the league.

We’ve had a really good week of

training leading into this game and

hopefully we can go and get a result

against a team, in Bristol City, who we

know can beat anyone on their day.

They’ve got some good players and a

good manager in Nigel Pearson, who

has plenty of experience and goes

about his business in the right way.

“WE’VE GOT

TO FOCUS ON

BUILDING IN THE

LEAGUE.”

Ultimately, though, it’s an opportunity

to get our home form going and

I’m confident we can do that today

with a positive performance.

As I mentioned, we have plenty of games

to come this month too, so we want to

make sure we start it in the right way.

I think we’ll find that come the end

of February, we’ll have a clearer

idea of where we are in terms of the

Championship table, taking us into the

final few months of the season.

Enjoy the game.

Ryan

NEW TEXT SERVICE AVAILABLE

Preston North End are launching a new text service on matchdays for supporters to report

any form of abuse, discrimination or anti-social behaviour at Deepdale.

The club prides itself on providing an inclusive and family-friendly atmosphere at the

ground, while also encouraging passionate support from the fans.

How to report an incident:

1. Via mobile phone – supporters can

use the text service by sending a text to

‘66777’. All texts must start with the letters

PNE followed by your stand, row and seat

number and also identify the location of

the anti-social behaviour, being as precise

as possible. For example, text ‘PNE I’m in

the Alan Kelly Town End, row 10, seat 34.

Male sitting directly in front of me shouting

racist abuse,’ to 66777. The club will then

make every effort to deal with the problem

as quickly as possible and you will not be

identified at any time;

2. Speak to the nearest matchday steward;

3. Report it via the Kick it Out App;

4. Email the club: enquiries@pne.com;

able to deal with the incident whilst it is

happening, for an immediate response use

options 1 and 2).

Thank you for your continued support.

THE MAIN

INTERVIEW

Delap

Liam

You’re 16 years of age and sitting down to take your English GCSE.

Oh, and straight afterwards you’re going to potentially sign for one

of the biggest clubs in world football.

It was some day for Liam Delap back in 2019.

Wrapping up his exam at his school in

Derby, he darted straight off with his

dad – former footballer Rory Delap – and his

mum, to take a look around Manchester City.

Instantly blown away by the facilities and what

they had to offer, it was a decision made easy.

“It was a bit of a surreal day really,” he smirked.

“I’d been with Derby for almost ten years,

since I was a little kid coming through

all of the age groups with them.

“They helped me so much and they helped

me become the player I am today.

“But when the opportunity came up at City, it

was really just one which I couldn’t turn down.

“I was happy with everything I saw there and I

trusted everything they told me, and then within

a couple of weeks I was starting pre-season.”

Before the move, he was already on track to

become a scholar with the Rams, but to make

the step to such an elite level, a future in football

suddenly became a very real possibility.

Liam relocated to Manchester to live onsite

with around 20 of the club’s younger

players, all committing their younger years

to trying to make a life in football.

And while that was, of course, the main

reason why they were all there, they

weren’t quite done with school just yet.

Liam added: “We always had to do our

work on the side, and it was drilled into

us from a really young age just how

important it was to get your education, just

in case it didn’t work out as planned.

“I don’t think anyone enjoyed it; I’ll be

honest, I hated the work side of it!

“But believe it or not, I was actually

really clever,” he laughed. “No one will

believe me, but I actually did well.”

His football did the talking, though, and he

earned a professional contract within 12

months of being on the books of the club,

putting pen to paper in July 2020.

The one and only » 19

20 « The one and only

He went on to have a remarkable season with

the Elite Development Squad, netting 24 goals

in 20 games, which unsurprisingly saw him

named the division’s player of the season,

while City lifted the trophy as a team.

The striker was certainly catching the eye

and soon earned involvement with the first

team, making his senior debut in September

2020, and he regularly went out onto the

training pitch with some of the world’s best.

Liam said: “You see all these amazing

players growing up, watching them play

and aspiring towards that level.

“It is kind of surreal as a kid to be going into that

environment and training with them every day.

“There’s just so much to learn from because they

are in the shoes of where everyone wants to be.”

There was no time for him to show

any sign of weakness, though.

Liam wasn’t there for a day out or to admire the

quality on show; he was there to be a part of it.

You could easily assume, with the big money flying

around in the Premier League and the status of

the top flight players, that they might look down

"WHEN THE

OPPORTUNITY CAME UP

AT CITY, IT WAS REALLY

JUST ONE WHICH I

COULDN’T TURN DOWN."

The one and only » 21

on a young kid coming into train with them.

But Liam’s experience was quite the opposite.

“I think the feeling and the environment at City is

top and I think everyone strives to push themselves

and push everyone around them,” he said.

“It is a team game and everyone has to push

their team-mates to get to the top, so that they

can perform week in, week out as a team.

“All of them were good with me to be fair.

A lot of the English boys are very good and

you see what Phil [Foden] has gone on to

do. He’s been in a similar position to us.

“The former captain, Fernandinho, was

very good with the younger lads.

“Everyone as a collective is really

good and they all seem to really want

to help the young boys achieve.”

It’s not just the players, though,

on hand to offer pointers.

According to Liam, Pep Guardiola – a serial

winner both in his playing days and as a

manager – always finds time to spend a moment

with individual players, picking out fine details

in their game that can be improved upon.

Ultimately, though, out on the training pitch with

the likes of Sergio Agüero and Gabriel Jesus,

competition was rife and Liam felt – back in

the summer of 2021 – that a move out on loan

might be the best for his development.

That was until an injury on the very first day of

pre-season brought that possibility to an end.

“There’s honestly nothing worse than that,” he

admitted, and by the time January came around, he

still hadn’t worked his way back into full fitness.

But then, after a summer which saw him become

a European Championship winner with England

U19, a loan move to Stoke City developed.

PNE and Ryan Lowe took an interest back then

and finally got their man in January, following

the forward’s recall to his parent club.

He’s made two appearances so far in his

short stint at the club, but he already

feels settled in his new surroundings.

“I’m really enjoying it,” he said,

with a smile on his face.

“I’ve had time to get to know everyone,

the players and the staff and the fans,

and I’m really enjoying it.

A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour

To mark the new season, we want to

make you aware of new measures

being taken across all of football

to ensure everyone can have a safe

and enjoyable experience. We are

supporting strong action from the

FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle

anti-social and criminal behaviours

that put all of us at risk.

This reflects the seriousness of

the risks to fans and staff – pyros

can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius

and cause lifechanging injuries,

while entering the pitch endangers

players, managers and match

officials.

We know those who commit these

illegal acts do not represent the

majority of supporters.

"I WANT TO SCORE AS

MANY GOALS AS POSSIBLE

OBVIOUSLY FOR MYSELF,

BUT I THINK THE MAIN

FOCUS IS ON THE TEAM."

Liam celebrates

scoring on his

senior debut

against AFC

Bournemouth in

September 2020.

“You spend every day with the same people so

you get to know them very quickly, which is nice.

“I’ve done it before, so you kind of get used

to it. Everyone’s doing the same thing, we

all have the same interest and it’s a great

group of lads, so I can’t complain.”

His debut was one to forget as a team, but his

second appearance was quite the opposite,

having earned his first start for the club in

a 2-1 victory away to Birmingham City.

Unfortunately, though, he was forced

to miss the Emirates FA Cup tie against

Tottenham Hotspur due to his involvement

with Stoke City in the previous round.

“It’s always disappointing to miss a night

like that, but it’s football,” added Liam.

“There’s plenty more games to come, so it’s

now about focusing on the next one.”

That is today’s visit of Bristol City, which marks

a return to Championship action, and a clear

run now through until the end of the season.

During that time, Liam is clear what he

wants to achieve, both on a personal

level and with his new club.

“I want to score as many goals as possible

obviously for myself, but I think the main

focus is on the team as a collective.

“If we can keep picking up these three points

and performing well then we’ve got a really

good chance of getting in the Play-Offs, and

hopefully we can end the season on a real high.

“I think it’s all in our control really, in

terms of how we’re going to play in

the coming games until the end.

“If we can grind it out and play well

together, then I think we can do it.”

» The lowdown «

Bristol City are the latest visitors to come to Deepdale, hoping to continue their recent unbeaten

run. Currently 17th in the Championship, manager Nigel Pearson will know just how important it

is to avoid a bottom-half finish come the end of the season, and they’ve made a promising start to

2023. In fact, their seven-game run without a defeat goes back to the final game of last year, and

within the streak has come victories over Birmingham City, Swansea City and most recently West

Bromwich Albion. In terms of transfers, the club swiftly replaced goalkeeper Dan Bentley – who left

for Wolves – with free agent Nikita Haikin. As for goalscorer Antoine Semenyo, who has been a key

man in recent years, he has departed for AFC Bournemouth. Injuries haven’t been kind to the squad

recently, either, as Andi Weimann has been recovering from a hamstring issue and joint top-scorer

Tommy Conway will be out for up to ten weeks. The previous encounter between the two sides at

Deepdale ended 2-2, with an equaliser from Emil Riis in the final minutes earning a last-gasp point.

Max O’Leary

26-years-old

Goalkeeper

Previous clubs:

Bristol City, Kidderminster Harriers (loan), Bath City

(loan), Solihull Moors (loan), Shrewsbury Town (loan)

Born in Bath, Max O’Leary started his career

with Bristol City. After working his way through

the ranks, the goalkeeper came on at halftime

in a 2-2 FA Cup third round draw to West

Bromwich Albion, in January 2016. Since then,

he was keen to prove himself and went out on

loan with Kidderminster Harriers just a few

months later. Despite this opportunity, his parent

club needed him after a month due to injuries

in the squad, so he would have to wait until

August for a move to hometown club Bath City.

Further spells at Solihull Moors and Shrewsbury

Town would follow, but O’Leary has now been

called into first team action at Bristol City this

season. His first game of the league campaign

incidentally came against PNE back in October

and he’s started each game since then, keeping

the far more experienced Dan Bentley – who has

since departed for Wolves – out of the side.

#26

Zak Vyner

25-years-old

Centre Back

Previous clubs:

Bristol City, Accrington Stanley (loan), Plymouth Argyle

(loan), Rotherham United (loan), Aberdeen (loan)

Following the departure of club captain Dan

Bentley, many fans of Bristol City believe that

Zak Vyner has all the qualities of becoming a

future skipper. A product of the Academy, Vyner

made his Championship debut in a 2-0 win over

MK Dons in 2016, before registering a further

three appearances in 2015/16. After loans with

Accrington Stanley, Plymouth Argyle, Rotherham

United and Aberdeen, the defender returned to

BS3 with an eagerness to prove himself. One

particularly successful campaign came in 2020/21,

during which Vyner made 49 appearances in total.

Also within that season came his first goal for

the Robins, against PNE in a 2-0 victory at Ashton

Gate, which saw the defender send a left-footed

half volley beyond Daniel Iversen. Now the most

frequently-used player in the squad, manager

Nigel Pearson has trusted him this season to

command the rest of a young defence.

Alex Scott

19-years-old

Central Midfielder

Previous clubs:

FC Guernsey

Playing for Guernsey in his early years, Alex

Scott made his debut at the club in August 2019,

to become their youngest ever player. It took

the midfielder just 15 appearances to make an

impression, as he joined Bristol City’s Academy

in January 2020. Making excellent progress

through the U18s and U23s, the club decided

to reward him with a professional contract,

which has seen him become integrated into the

first team squad. A standout 2021/22 season

for Scott included 39 games, four goals and

two assists – enough to earn the young player

of the year award as a result. A crucial talent

under Nigel Pearson, the youngster has risen to

become one of the first names on the team sheet

this Championship campaign and has attracted

the attention of some Premier League outfits.

Bristol City may have a job on their hands to

hold on to the midfielder again in the summer.

Nahki Wells

32-years-old

Centre Forward

Previous clubs:

Dandy Town Hornets FC, Bermuda Hogges, Eccleshill

United FC, Carlisle United FC, Bradford City, Huddersfield

Town, Burnley, Queens Park Rangers (loan)

Striker Nahki Wells formed the beginning of

his career in his home country, at Dandy Town

Hornets and Bermuda Hogges. After moving

to the UK and having a brief spell at Eccleshill

United, Wells featured for Carlisle and then

Bradford across three-and-a-half seasons. With

the latter, he took the 2012/13 campaign by storm

– reaching the League Cup Final and winning

promotion from League Two after scoring in the

Play-Off Final. Registering an impressive 53 goals

during his time there, moves to Huddersfield

Town, Burnley and QPR soon came about. This was

up until January 2020, when Bristol City signed

their man. Wells is on track to become the club’s

golden boot winner again, with nine Championship

goals to his name already this season – having

previously topped the charts in 2020/21 after

first, best, last...

We look back on victories over this afternoon’s visitors, with our first, best

and last win over the Robins here at Deepdale, starting 120 years ago…

FIRST

Our first win over the Robins came

in their second visit to Deepdale, in

March 1903, when the two sides were

second division teams.

The top two that season were

Manchester City and Small Heath

(Birmingham City), with the Lilywhites

finishing in seventh, six points and

three places behind their West Country

opponents.

The game in question was decided by a

spot kick, with the penalty converted

by Harry Wilcox – one of five he

finished off that season.

Wilcox ended the campaign with an

impressive 16 goals in all competitions,

but it was only enough for third place

in the scoring charts with Frank

Pearson (18) and Percy Smith (17)

finishing ahead of him… although there

weren’t many more with their scoring

boots on that season, as the next

highest after the three of them, ended

the campaign with just three!

PNE line-up: McBride, Derbyshire, Orrell,

Howell, Hunter, Tod, Walton, Wilcox, Pratt,

Pearson, Beaver.

Rabbi Howell was part of the side that got the first

win over the Robins.

Best - Callum Robinson celebrates against his

former club.

BEST

Our biggest ever home league win over

the Robins came when PNE dished out a

five-goal thrashing over City in 2017.

Tom Barkhuizen's sixth in 11 games put

North End a goal up at the break, as

the Robins largely foiled the hosts.

But the floodgates opened after the

break, firstly when Callum Robinson

went down and Aiden McGeady netted

from the spot.

Skipper Tom Clarke headed in a freekick

for the third, before Robinson's

two close-range strikes capped

the win.

North End manager Simon Grayson

said: "It ended up being a good night

for us. First half we got the goal

and said at half-time we had to be

quicker with the ball, move it around

quicker. We got full steam ahead,

got the penalty and then played with

confidence and swagger without being

too complacent and scored some very

good goals."

PNE line-up: Maxwell, Clarke, Baptiste,

Huntington, Cunningham, Barkhuizen

(Beckford, 78), Gallagher, Pearson

(Johnson, 71), McGeady (Horgan, 71),

Robinson, Hugill. Subs not used: Lindegaard,

Browne, Makienok, Boyle.

LAST

Daniel Johnson's first-half penalty was

enough for North End to beat Bristol

City a week before Christmas in 2020.

Johnson placed his spot-kick down the

middle after top scorer Scott Sinclair

was brought down by Taylor Moore.

Former Celtic and Swansea forward

Sinclair also saw a low shot deflected

wide and a volley well saved by Daniel

Bentley as PNE deserved their lead at

the break.

Dean Holden's side came out strong

in the second half, but excellent saves

from Declan Rudd helped secure the

win.

Speaking afterwards, manager Alex

Neil said: "I thought we deserved it.

First half we played some good stuff,

and we were better than them."

PNE line-up: Rudd, Fisher (Rafferty, 69),

Huntington, Davies, Earl, Browne, Gallagher

(Bayliss, 76), Barkhuizen, Johnson

(Stockley, 80), Sinclair, Maguire (Riis, 69).

Subs not used: Ripley, Harrop, Storey,

Holland-Wilkinson, O'Reilly.

Last - Daniel Johnson converts the winner from the

penalty spot

Rob Atkinson, born in Chesterfield, spent

much of his youth playing in France for the AS

Cannes Academy, having grown up in France

with his family. Upon starting his senior career

at Basingstoke Town in the 2016/17 season, he

would join Fulham soon after and play for the

U23s. The defender was loaned out to Braintree

Town in the National League, before making the

permanent switch to division rivals Eastleigh

in June 2019. By January 2020, Atkinson had

impressed enough to sign for Oxford United, with

a brief loan back to Eastleigh during his time

there. Becoming a regular for the U’s during

the 2020/21 season, he scored twice and kept

12 clean sheets in all competitions to set up an

appearance in the Play-Offs. Despite bagging a

goal himself, his side were beaten over the two

legs, but he won a spot in both the PFA League One

team of the year and Sky Bet League One team

of the season for his efforts. Bristol City won

the race for the defender in July 2021 and have

placed him firmly into the backline ever since,

under manager Nigel Pearson. Atkinson has good

memories of facing PNE, having scored both his

side’s goals in their 2-1 victory back in October.

Nigel Pearson started as manager of Carlisle

United and helped keep them in the Football

League at the end of the 1998/99 season, before

moving on to be assistant manager at Stoke City.

By 2004, Pearson switched to West Bromwich

Albion – again as an assistant – but took over

as caretaker manager when Bryan Robson left

in September 2006. Albion won three and drew

one of his matches, before he stepped down

in October for the Newcastle United assistant

role. With a short stint as assistant coach for

England U21s in between, Pearson took charge of

Newcastle in a caretaker position until February

2008 – becoming the next Southampton manager.

Despite keeping the club in the Championship

after a relegation scare, his time was limited to

just three months before moving on. June then

came around and Pearson was off to Leicester

City. Losing only four of their 46 league games,

Leicester were guided back to the Championship

and, in the following season, they reached the

Play-Offs for a back-to-back promotion push.

His successful two years ended in June 2010

when he became Hull City manager, but he would

soon return to the Foxes a year later. It took a

few seasons, but Pearson had his club finish

the 2013/14 campaign top of the Championship,

a further four years, he has managed at Derby

County, OH Leuven and Watford, before reaching

the point of joining Bristol City in February 2021.

THEY WORE THE SHIRT...

with Ian Rigby

For this season’s historical page, I thought it might be an ideal opportunity to

highlight the players who represented Preston North End exactly one hundred

years ago during the 1922/23 season. The country was still recovering from

the effects of World War One, but was slowly getting back on track.

JOHN STOREY

Despite being the least known

of the footballers that

represented Preston North End

during the featured 1922/23 season,

Storey still has a story to tell! Coming

from a very large family in the

former mining village of Marley Hill,

near Newcastle, he began his junior

football career in and around that

north east area of the country.

He played for Whickham Park Villa

before joining the Chopwell Institute

Football Club that won the Northern

Football Alliance League in 1920/21. By

November 1921, he had been spotted

and signed by PNE as a professional

footballer, with the Chopwell Institute

receiving £25. Storey must have known

deep down that he would only be a

reserve player at best, but playing in

the Central League was a far better

option than mining or working in a

factory. After just over a year as a

regular defender in the reserves the

opportunity arose to make his league

debut, when Wilf Yates was deemed

unfit to play at Deepdale against

Sheffield United two days before

Christmas 1922. His debut should have

been the main topic of the afternoon,

but his big day sadly did not attract

any mention from the local reporter as

North End had signed Alex Laird from

Glasgow Rangers for a decent £1,500

transfer fee on that same day. Storey’s

afternoon ended in disappointment for

him, though, as the Blades won 3-2.

On reflection, he did not let the team

down, but realistically would have

known that he would have to give way

to more experienced defenders. He

is only one of seven known former

Chopwell players to make a league

debut over the years. After that one

game he was back in the reserves,

but at least he was proud to say that

he wore the shirt. In May 1923, he was

placed on the transfer list and he was

soon snapped up by Hartlepools United

– as they were then known. He was

unlucky in the fact that he received a

nasty knock in their last pre-season

practice match and found himself on

the injury table as the new season

started. It was mid-September before

he made his Hartlepools league debut

in the Division Three (North) league.

After a dozen games at left back, he

was called upon to help the struggling

team as an emergency centre forward

against Accrington Stanley. Sadly, he

was on the winning side only once

whilst with Hartlepools. Mind you, as a

Hartlepools reserve player, the team

won the Sunderland Shipowner’s Cup

and the National Orphanage Hospital

Cup, too. Not many ex-North Enders

can claim to have won those two cups!

In August 1924, having been released by

his club, he had an unsuccessful trial

with Newcastle United, before joining

Grimsby Town, initially on a one-month

trial. With no league games under

his belt with Grimsby, it is not known

how his life panned out in later life,

as yet!

FOR

RECORD

with Mike Payne

Over the years many club records have been set by Preston North End players, and in this

new series of articles we look at some of those records that have been set, and broken,

here at Deepdale. Some are well known, but others are more obscure, and hopefully

fascinating. All records are up to the end of last season.

When looking through the

list of the 1,167 names

of the players that have

represented Preston North End

over the past 143 years, it has

thrown up some interesting

stories. I thought it might be a

good idea to have a ‘tongue-incheek’

look at some of them. We

have music, colours, animals,

body parts, food and all manner

of other things. Let me explain…

The music comes from three of the

greats: Michael Jackson, George

Harrison and Glen Campbell. What a

trio that is, although I am not sure how

our Jackson, Harrison and Campbell

would have sounded, but ours were

rather good at football. I also tracked

down the longest and shortest names

in the list. It looked as though it

was a three-way tie between Ricky

Heppolette, Willie Naughton and Willie

Robertson, who each had 30 letters

in their full names. That was until we

reached Raymond Christopher Patrick

Treacy, who has 31 letters in his full

name and pipped everyone. As for

the shortest name, that was easy,

John Kay with seven letters. Boring!

I know, I know, I need to get a life!

But there’s more. Who do you think

has the most middle names in our

findings? I say ‘our’ because my mate

Ian Rigby has this incurable desire

for finding out North Enders’ middle

names. There are lots of our former

Alex Sherry.

The one and only » 41

Brian Greenhalgh.

Ray Treacy.

players with three middle names, but

only one with four, and he is Danny

Welbeck, or should I say Daniel Nii

Tackie Mensah Welbeck. And before

you start counting, there are only 28

letters! There may be one other player

with four Christian names, but until

we find out what the G stands for in

the name Daryl Francis Roy G Russell,

we can’t be sure. He will need nine

more letters to eclipse Ray Treacy!

Do you fancy something to eat now?

How about Lamb (Alan) with Mustard

(John), or perhaps a bit of Ham

(Bobby), with a nice Sherry (Alex) to

follow? One of the other things noticed

is how many men we have had. By that

I mean, Chapman, Coleman, Stuckmann,

Trotman, Twentyman, Wayman,

Whiteman, Wiseman and Woodman! I

was also intrigued to find out if we had

more Davids than Johns. In the end

there was no contest as there are 46

Davids, but 99 Johns! One of the pet

hates when I am writing this series

is finding people christened John,

who were always known as Jack, for

reasons I am still trying to establish.

North End have actually had at least

20 John/Jacks play for us so far.

Parts of the body don’t escape my

attention, with Brain (Joseph), Hart

(Michael), Tonge (Michael), Foot

(George), Hair (Alex Sandy) and

how about Temple (Derek)? Clever,

eh? Although I think the less said

about John Thomas, the better!

The animals and birds come thick

and fast through the list. They include

a Beaver (John), a Fox (Frederick),

a Lyon (William), a Parrott (Troy),

a Wolf (George), a Sparrow (Paul),

a Crowe (Michael), a Rudd (it’s a

fish!) (Declan), Teale (Shaun) (a

duck!) and a Swann (Gary). And not

forgetting John Bird, of course.

We have had three Kings (Jack,

Stuart and Josh), but as far as I

know we don’t have any Queens. Mind

you there was a player we tried to

sign once called Gerry Queen, who

played at the Palace – Crystal Palace

that is. We should have signed him

to go with our Kings! We’ve also

had an Earl (Josh) and a Marquis

(Fred), not to mention an Abbott

(Pawel) and a Bishop (Charlie).

I have looked through this list on my

Tod (George), Day and Knight (Chris

and Jack) looking for English (John),

Scotts (Leslie, Thomas and William)

and Welsh (John), but so far I have not

found an Irish. This article has been

so interesting I thought of turning

it into a film, and I have the perfect

director, John Ford! I also found

three colours, Green (6), Gray (5) and

Brown (13), and you can make that 14

if you count Alan Browne with an ‘E’.

Smiths (15) beat Jones (9), but there

are 43 Macs registered with us. Oh,

and Williams with seven were also

up there. And did you know we have

had 12 O-apostrophe players join us?

As a southerner, there has always

been one name that I have had trouble

pronouncing. I have always wanted to

say Brian Greenhellg, but Riggers tells

me that Greenhalgh is pronounced

Greenolsh. What’s that all about? I

will finish this article with another

name that befits his nationality to

perfection, much better than any

other on the list. Alexander Robert

Bruce, a good old Irish name if ever I

heard one! Only joking, Brucey…

ACADEMY MATCH REPORT

SALFORD CITY U19s 4

PRESTON NORTH END U19s 0

A

young Preston North End U19s

side were defeated in their

latest Youth Alliance fixture last

weekend.

The side saw all 11 players from the

side’s previous outing, their FA Youth

Cup win at Gillingham, rested, with a

young side accompanied by first year

pros, Harry Nevin and Aaron Bennett,

who continued his comeback after

over three months out with a severe

hamstring injury.

The visitors made a relatively strong

start and created the game’s first real

opportunity in the 12th minute when Tom

Wilkinson rose highest to meet Bennett’s

corner from the left and the defender’s

powerful header forced a good save out

of the Salford goalkeeper.

Just three minutes later and the wind

was knocked out of PNE’s sails when the

hosts took the lead, after their attacking

midfielder was given space and found

the top corner with a strike from 20

yards.

And North End found themselves two

down just five minutes later, the Ammies

doubling their advantage in similar

circumstances as their winger was

allowed to cut in from the left flank and

curl a low effort into the far corner.

The hosts got their third on 27 minutes

when a cross from the left found the

Salford forward in space, who was able

to beat Tommy Davis to the ball and nod

home from close range.

PNE made their first change ten minutes

before the break when Josh Seary

replaced Charlie Goldsmith, who was

given a third of the match as he looked

to regain fitness after over six months

on the sidelines.

The Lilywhites had a good chance to

pull one back in the 39th minute, when

a free-kick was swung in from the left

by Bennett and flicked on by Nevin, but

a good reflex save from the Salford

’keeper saw him keep the lead at three.

The hosts almost made it four just

before the interval when the scorer of

their third goal latched onto a Seary

backpass but got his finish all wrong.

The second half saw a second change

in personnel as Izac Khan also returned

from injury – a knee complaint he

picked up earlier in the season in the

Lancashire Youth Cup quarter-final win

at Wigan – and he replaced Kasper

Pasiek.

The substitute was immediately involved

in the action when he was played

in down the left and sent a cross

towards the far post where Seary was

there to meet it, but he saw his effort

well saved.

Despite starting the second half in the

ascendency, North End conceded for

the fourth time on 55 minutes when a

cross from the right fell into the path of

a Salford forward, who was left with an

easy tap-in.

Kaedyn Kamara and Finlay Wallbank

were both introduced in place of

Bennett – who had got his first hour

under his belt after his time out - and

striker Callum Havard, but the side

were unable to get themselves a goal to

get them back into the game.

ACADEMY INTERVIEW

WELSH DISAPPOINTED

BY FIRST-HALF DISPLAY

North End U19s coach John Welsh was disappointed by the first-half display by the

young Lilywhites at Platt Lane, feeling they were ‘miles off it’ against the Ammies.

Speaking after the game,

Welsh said: “Overall, I’m

disappointed as it was a

poor performance.

“After their first goal, we were

miles off it really, we didn’t

press with intensity, we didn’t

win first or second contacts.

“We put in a performance that

we don’t want to associate with

this team.”

Welsh was particularly unhappy

with the team’s first-half display,

but said he saw a clear effort

from the players to try and

right their wrongs in the second

period.

“First half, we were particularly

disappointing,” he continued.

“We got them in at half-time and

gave them a bit of a shake-up

and I thought in the second

half we saw a reaction from

them which we wanted and the

intensity was definitely raised.

“The only positive today is that

from the first half to the second,

we were two different teams.”

Welsh believes there is a lesson

to be learnt for the players in

this defeat and wants to ensure

they stay focused on their

upcoming matches.

“We want to win games and we

want to play well, but a big part

of football is dealing well with

setbacks.

“We need to keep them going,

keep the confidence high within

the group because we’ve

got some important games

coming up so we need a good

atmosphere around the place.

“We will go through the analysis

with the lads on Monday,

highlight the differences

between the first half and

second half and then we will

move on.

“That’s football, you

play the game,

re-evaluate it

and then look

forward to the

next one.”

“THAT’S FOOTBALL,

YOU PLAY THE

GAME, RE-EVALUATE

IT AND THEN LOOK

FORWARD TO THE

NEXT ONE."

A

young North End side put on

a positive performance in

difficult conditions to take a

point from a six-goal thriller at the

Accrington Stanley Community Trust

Hub on Tuesday afternoon.

A brace from Finlay Cross-Adair and

a third stunning strike from Kian Best

in as many games got the goals for

the Lilywhites, whilst Cross-Adair was

also denied a hat-trick and a matchwinner

by a penalty save from home

goalkeeper Liam Isherwood.

With Jacob Slater and Josh Seary away

on international duty with the Republic

of Ireland U19s, Lewis Coulton and

Ethan Eccleston – who impressed on

his first Central League start – came

into the side that had drawn with

Blackpool a week previously on the

flanks.

It was a wild afternoon, with strong

wind, bright sunshine from one end

and a very heavy pitch, so when

skipper Noah Mawene switched ends at

the toss, PNE looked to take advantage

and did so early.

A clever ball from Best, using the wind,

flew over the Stanley defence down the

left and Cross-Adair raced onto it, into

the box and fired a vicious left-footed

shot past Isherwood into the top left

corner from 15 yards out on 11 minutes.

However, the lead didn’t last long, as on

18 minutes the experienced Jack Nolan

found space on the right to clip a cross

into the box, that hung on the wind and

allowed Owen Devonport to nod past

James Pradic.

Despite the conditions, the young North

End side were trying their hardest

to play on the deck and a slick move

saw the youngest man on the pitch,

Eccleston, find Mawene on the right,

who pulled the ball back for Cross-

Adair, but his first-time effort was just

over the bar.

The hosts went into half-time ahead

when they grabbed a second six

minutes before the interval. It was the

same pair combining as their equaliser,

with Nolan crossing from the right

and this time Devonport stooped at

the front post to head into the bottom

right-hand corner.

The leveller came midway the second

half and had been coming. Kacper

Pasiek, who was on for the injured

Coulton, worked space on the left and

found Best, who delivered a superb

cross with the outside of his boot and

Cross-Adair headed home from close

range.

PNE’s No.29 was denied a hat-trick

just two minutes later by a great save

from Isherwood, after a quick one-two

with Kitt Nelson opened up space in the

penalty area.

But, on 71 minutes, North End found

themselves behind again, when

Accrington – completely against the

run of play – saw a long, straight freekick

from Nolan spilled into the path of

home captain Harry Perritt, who poked

home from inside the six-yard box.

The last 20 minutes were all PNE,

though, and they were back on level

terms on 74 minutes when Pasiek

was brought down 25 yards out. Best

stepped up, whipping a superb freekick

from the left-hand channel into

the top right-hand corner, giving the

host’s goalkeeper no chance.

And three minutes later they had a

great chance to win it, when Cross-

Adair again exchanged passes with

Nelson, before being brought down by

Isherwood in the box. He got up and

took the penalty himself, going down

the middle, but the stopper denied him

with his feet as he dived to his right.

Chances though continued to come.

Nelson and Cross-Adair twice saw

shots either blocked or deflected wide,

but in the final seconds an opportunity

fell to Mawene after Eccleston’s pacy

run down the right, but a red-shirted

body somehow got a block in on the

line with Isherwood beaten and the

game finished 3-3.

PNE WOMEN 5

MORECAMBE LADIES 1

Preston North End Women

recorded an emphatic 5-1

Cup victory over Morecambe

Ladies, with Madison Hadley netting

four goals.

The Lilywhites started the game

very strongly, having control of

possession and putting the pressure

on the Reds from early on.

Hadley was the first PNE player

to get a shot on goal, she was

unlucky to see her shot go straight

into the goalkeeper’s hands.

Hadley continued to cause problems

upfront, going close without

finding the back of the net.

Charlotte Greenwood found

herself at the back post minutes

later, but was unable to stretch

to reach the ball in time.

The Lilywhites looked comfortable

in possession, passing out from

the back and building momentum

further up the pitch.

Another chance came, this time it

was Liv Askam who found herself

in front of goal but she squared

her shot just wide of the post.

Morecambe’s frustrations began

to grow after struggling to gain

possession of the ball and this was

to the home side's advantage.

Not long after, Beth Wilson found

herself in a dangerous position

and tested the keeper, whose save

spilled across the goal and there

was nobody on hand to tap-in.

All that PNE needed was a goal to

deservedly put them ahead.

And that elusive goal eventually arrived

when Hadley slotted home.

The girls got into their rhythm and

before half-time, they doubled their lead

with Hadley assisting Askam, who turned

her marker and made the most of the

one-on-one with the keeper.

Hadley was in the right place at the

right time for PNE’s third of the match,

before an unfortunate error by the

hosts led to Morecambe clinching a

goal back.

The Lilywhites reacted immediately,

with Wilson crossing into the box for

the impressive Hadley to complete her

hat-trick.

A change in position benefitted Natalie

Jacques and PNE, as the former got

down the right hand side and assisted

Hadley for her fourth of the afternoon,

finding the top right corner to ensure an

emphatic victory for the Lilywhites.

PNE Women's manager, Nigel

Greenwood, provided his post-match

thoughts:

“The game today was absolutely

fantastic. It was nearly the perfect

performance after the performance

last week.

“We asked for a reaction and that is

what we got. The football that was

played out from the back was out of

this world. Sometimes that is us at our

best.”

PNECET IN

ZANZIBAR:

APRIL 2023!

Preston North End Community and Education Trust is

co-ordinating a trip for a team of more than 20 volunteers to visit

Zanzibar in April 2023 to leave a positive lasting legacy of Preston

North End on the African island.

Preston North End Community

and Education Trust [PNECET]

is hosting a charity football

tournament on Sunday 5th March

to raise funds for its life-changing

volunteering trip to Zanzibar in April

this year.

More than 20 volunteers are travelling

to the African island, which is off the

continent’s south east coast and forms

part of Tanzania, to leave a lasting

difference and legacy of Preston North

End to positively impact the lives of

those on the island.

Taking place at PlayFootball Preston (PR2

3TX), squads of up to seven are invited to

take part in the fundraising tournament

at the cost of £70 a team. The age range

is 18-plus and abilities are welcome.

The women’s tournament will kick-off

at 9.30am to 12 noon, whilst the men’s is

set to start at 12.30pm, finishing at 3pm.

All funds raised will be distributed

evenly between those who are travelling

to Zanzibar.

Registration is from 9am before kick-off

at 9.30am, and further donations will

be invited with refreshments available

on-site.

To register an interest in your team

playing in the tournament, please

email alistair.white@pne.com. Once

your team’s place has been confirmed,

pre-payment in advance of the event

will be required by calling 01772

PNECET will be staying in Stone

Town for ten nights from 2nd

April 2023, for which Preston

residents have signed up to play their

part in making a vital difference to the

lives of those in Stone Town.

Stone Town has a population of 16,000,

but a large percentage of those living in

the city are surviving off less than 75p

a day. PNECET and African Adventures

are working with schools in Stone Town

to improve their facilities and provide

additional teaching resources, which is

where volunteers play a vital role.

With classrooms in the partner schools

in Zanzibar often lacking resources and

being overcrowded, teaching assistants

will deliver lessons, work with teachers

to set and mark homework, and support

students with their work.

The educational work of PNECET will see

volunteers focusing on sports delivery,

with coaching and teaching both in and

outside of PE lessons.

Meanwhile, to improve and expand the

facilities available to partner schools,

volunteers in building and renovation

will construct and renovate both new

and existing classrooms and school

facilities.

The trip will be coordinated by PNECET

staff member Alistair White, who has

previously volunteered in Africa to

support the lives of children living in

poverty.

Coaching at Deepdale?

In conjunction with the University of South Wales [USW] and the EFL Trust,

Preston North End Community and Education Trust [PNECET] offers the

opportunity to study various degree qualifications with lectures delivered

on-site at Deepdale.

PNECET’s courses provide students with the opportunity to gain work

experience in the sports industry alongside their studies, as well as the

chance to take up additional coaching qualifications such as FA certificates in

coaching football.

Students will mainly be based at Deepdale and Preston North End's

facilities throughout the academic year, however, they will also attend two

residentials a year at USW's Treforest Sports Park facility for induction and

practical assessments.

Lectures are sent from the university to the students' online learning

Learners studying a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport qualification on our

own Preston Centre of Sporting Excellence programme can move straight

onto the foundation degree course. We also welcome applicants from

external organisations. Entry requirements are three passes at BTEC level or
