Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: MudHen Brewing Company on Rio Grande Avenue in 

Wildwood. It’s right on your left a few blocks in after coming over the 

bridge. It’s also under the same umbrella as Dogtooth and Poppi’s, both 

on New Jersey Avenue. 

The vibe: It was a chilly Sunday night and not too busy. We had 

a nice run-in with Chet Kennedy, Ferry Park’s, husband of Director of 

Sales/Events Krystina Kennedy’, who said that was not the case the 

night prior. Glad to hear MudHen is still seeing some busy weekends 

this time of year. Dan and Nicole were sat in the dining room opposite 

the bar, which offered a stellar view of the patio. Firepits were blazing 

and there were a few groups enjoying the space. A few degrees higher 

and we would’ve headed out there ourselves. But it was no loss inside 

— our server Katie was a lot of fun and great to chat with. She had us 

cracking up all night and made it such an enjoyable evening. 

The beer: Nicole was craving an ice-cold beer and the Holly Beach 

Wheat fit the bill with notes of citrus and ginger. It didn’t take much 

convincing to have Dan try a sip. Thankfully, this brew sticks around 

year-round because it’s a firm favorite. 

The food: We started with our favorite pretzel sticks served with 

three dipping sauces. Nicole then heard the soup of the day and couldn’t 

pass it up. The chorizo and tortellini soup was hearty with a nice spice 

— a cup just wasn’t enough, so we’re hoping it sticks around for a while. 

For dinner, Dan went for the pulled pork sandwich with fries and Nicole 

enjoyed a chicken Caesar salad. And as always, we left room for dessert 

and split Caramel Apple Granny — apple pie topped with caramel and 

served with vanilla ice cream. 

The takeaway: You can’t go wrong with a night out at MudHen. 

Enjoy live music throughout the week and some tempting daily specials 

like Briskets & Brews Monday and Sizzling Steak Thursday. They also 

have quite the happy hour Mon-Fri. Check out the full schedule online

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

The calendar is closing in on February 

14, the celebrated day of budding 

romance and Cape May’s modern 

kickoff to the tourist season. New 

Jersey’s birds have been in the mood 

since last year. As early as December, Greathorned 

Owls begin establishing territories 

and renewing pair bonds. Perhaps our most 

abundant resident raptor, the jug-sized owls 

with distinctive ear tufts and yellow eyes, 

begin nesting in January and are incubating 

now and will do so even beneath an insulating 

blanket of snow. So why nest, now? Why not? 

There’s lots of food for large owls. Rice rats, 

voles, rabbits, skunks, possums, feral cats, 

ducks. Skunks are particularly favored, and 

it is rare to find a Great-horned that does not 

smell of skunk. I once saw a Great-horned 

Owl standing beside a rural road. Curious I 

pulled a U-turn and discovered the bird had a 

skunk in his talons that was too heavy to bear 

aloft. Nonplused, the bird walked the skunk 

into the woods and out of sight. 

While mostly active at night, Greathorned 

Owls begin calling at dusk. There 

are places on the Bayshore where three to 

four pairs can be heard at a time. This is the 

classic, measured five to seven deep hoot call 

with males making the deeper, lower-pitched 

call, Great-horneds also make a hair-raising 

shriek and a muffled, rapid series of hoots. 

To see Great-horned Owls, position 

yourself where you can view trees at the edge 

of the marsh. Owls will often take perches of 

strategic dead timber at dusk. Jakes Landing 

is a fine vantage point. If you arrive early, scan 

for Short-eared Owls that may be hunting low 

and slow over the marsh. They’ll resemble 

large, tawny moths. 

Another bird incubating eggs, now, is 

the Bald Eagle. Once rare, there are over 20 

active eagle nests in our region with other 

free-floating adults waiting their turn. 

Feeding mostly on moribund fish, or fish purloined 

from Osprey, eagles must work hard to 

secure food before Osprey return to our region 

in late March. Deer carcasses tide eagles over 

until then, but they’re also adept hunters, 

preying mostly upon puddle ducks. If you are 

standing on the hawk-watch platform at Cape 

May Point State Park and all the ducks lift off 

Bunker Pond and head in one direction, look 

the other way to see the incoming eagle. 

Don’t be dismayed if the bird lacks a white 

head and tail. Only adults have white heads 

and tails. Juvenile birds take five to seven 

years to gain these signature traits. Trust the 

ducks to know an eagle when they see one.

It is one of the most celebrated movies 

this Oscar season, but are you ready for 

it? Everything Everywhere All at Once is one 

of the best movies I’ve seen! But I was 

ready for it, and you might be too. Will 

it make my top-10 list of favorite movies? 

Not sure. But this movie was as moving as it 

was quirky. And I love me some quirky. But I 

wouldn’t be saying all this without the Marvel 

multiverse storylines of the past couple years. 

Let me explain. 

Everything Everywhere All at Once is a mind 

bender and absurdist comedy. It has plenty 

of LOL. I had to rewind a few times on the 

“everything bagel scene” (search that on 

YouTube). There are also, however, moments 

that are unbelievably… wait for it… it’s my 

favorite descriptor for a movie that is genuinely 

elevated… poignant. There, I said it. In 

the end, kindness wins out over meanness. 

A lost generation needs to be saved, and one 

mother must draw from multiple versions of 

herself to get that job done for her daughter. 

This battle is waging today, and we need this

truth and kindness today. If you disagree, 

check your meanness at the door — oh, and 

read a newspaper. 

So how does Marvel play in? The premise 

of Everything Everywhere All at Once is that multiple 

universes and other versions of us exist 

somewhere else. Too much? You’re out, you 

say? Fair enough. But this is fantasy fiction, 

so… maybe reconsider. The Marvel character 

Doctor Strange has pioneered the multiverse 

in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and Doctor 

Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). But 

this is not new. In 2011, indie film Another 

Earth made my top 10. Fantastic fantasy and 

( yep, you guessed it) damned poignant. 

Can this movie get confusing? Certainly. 

Might you fall asleep? I’ve seen it happen. 

Can you take this film too seriously? Caution: 

don’t do it. It’s absurdist, remember? Go with 

the multiverse flow and stay with it. This 

movie affirms the better parts of our human 

condition amidst deep adversities we all face. 

In my book, that’s worth 11 Oscar nominations. 

Last year’s The Power of the Dog got 12 

nods and won one award. That story was not 

nearly as uplifting. It’s bad when one jerk of a 

character in the end simply goes away leaving 

remnants of angst and despair. Oof… that 

bites. This year’s top nominated movie provides 

hope for next generations if we can only 

be kinder to one another. If it wins nothing, 

I’ll be sad but not surprised. I’m pulling for 

“multiple wins.” Hah, get it?

Show yourself some love this 

Valentine’s Day with a Thai massage. 

Winter can do a number on your body, 

causing your muscles to tighten as you 

brace against the cold. Thai massage, 

sometimes called assisted yoga, can ease that 

muscle tension like nothing else. Using traditional 

medicine techniques developed thousands 

of years ago, Thai massage works with 

your “Sen” lines, the energy lines that frame 

the human body. The goal is to stimulate the 

flow of energy and restore harmony. Travelers 

assert that Thai massage eases jet lag, and 

research proves that it helps to reduce joint 

stiffness and promote a sense of well-being. 

You’re clothed for a Thai massage, in 

either stretchy exercise wear, or, in some spas, 

a uniform resembling medical scrubs. As you 

recline on a massage table, or the floor, familiar 

spa music plays, and the technician places 

a warm cloth on your eyes and under your 

neck. Then, the technician moves your body 

into a series of poses with pressure that’s just 

short of uncomfortable. 

At first, you may struggle to relax, focusing 

instead on what the technician is doing. Is 

that her elbow? Is she sitting on me? Soon, you 

don’t care, because you’re lost in the stretches. 

The technician moves your body into shapes 

— now, you’re a ballerina in a horizontal arabesque, 

now you’re the figurehead of a ship. 

She pays attention to your feet and hands. By 

the end, you feel loose and relaxed, and free 

of the stiffness you came with. Most people 

enjoy some pain relief after one session. I felt 

like cooked spaghetti. It was wonderful. 

At Cape May Day Spa, (607 Jefferson 

Street, 609-898-1003), a Thai massage is $175 

for 50 minutes, $235 for 80 minutes. Call 

ahead for an appointment and ask any questions 

you have. If you love the experience, 

rest assured that the spa keeps records, so 

you can book with the same technician again. 

Massages can dehydrate you, so drink plenty 

of water the day before your appointment. 

Eat lightly before your massage. When you 

arrive, relax with a cup of herbal tea. Masks 

are optional, and mine did not interfere with 

the massage at all. After the massage, don’t 

hurry out — return to the sunroom and enjoy 

another cup of tea so you can prolong the 

relaxation. You may be starving, but wait 30 

minutes before eating, and start with a light 

meal. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

floor for $195, or Table Thai, a modified version 

performed on a massage table, for $165.

control your emotions. Look for the qualities

Day, do not sit at home and mope. Take a good 

friend to dinner. See about exchanging the 

ring for a watch to remind you that life is short 

and we shouldn’t waste it on the ambivalent.

I’m a foodie but my fiancé, not so much. I’ve 

been trying to introduce her to some foods out 

of her comfort zone and she’s been receptive. 

She is a connoisseur of a top-notch hamburger 

and anything Italian which I love about her. I 

want to take her to one of Cape May’s swankier 

restaurants for Valentine’s Day, but I’m afraid 

she won’t like my choice. Should I ask her? I

LOBOS is a stunning three-year-old Akita 

who came to the shelter when his owner could 

no longer care from him. He is a smart dog 

who knows several useful skills. Lobos can be 

a bit shy in the beginning but will lean in for 

pets once he’s comfortable. He enjoys being 

outside and exploring his surroundings — he 

especially loves car rides! 

SPOT is a calm and quiet gentleman who 

came to the shelter when his owner died. Spot 

and his sister Samantha had been with him 

since they were puppies. He loves to be with 

people and is friendly to anyone who meets 

him. Spot has great leash skills and prefers a 

walk more than playing in the yard. The shelter 

would prefer to keep him with Samantha. 

BEAR is a sensitive young boy who came to 

the shelter as a stray. He is becoming a happy, 

goofy and active pup whose leash skills are 

improving daily. He loves chasing his toys in 

the yard and climbing up on a lap. Bear would 

thrive in a calm home and needs a slow introduction 

to other animals. He has the potential 

to be a life-long companion.

owner. She came in with trauma to her back

MIDNIGHT is a 12-year-old cat who has 

tested positive for feline leukemia. She was 

abandoned at the shelter and is need of 

love and safety. Midnight is a bit over seven 

pounds but is gaining weight. He loves to be 

held and has a very pleasant and kind nature 

about him. If interested in adopting Midnight,

ROSE is a sweet angel who came to the shelter 

as a stray. She is about seven months old and 

very healthy — Rose is ready for her forever 

home. She is very smart loves to play. Rose 

would be good in a home with other cats, dogs 

and children. She is up to date on all vaccinations
