GROWING UP in West
Melton put Aidan Copp on
a pathway to world record
success.
At a solo record attempt
in Tasmania, the 37-year-old
attained the highest number of
crossbred lambs shorn in eight
hours – 605 – smashing the
previous record of 527.
He sweated it out in
35-degree heat, on a mission to
reclaim the record he had first
attained in 2019, when he’d
shorn 524 sheep.
Now, living in the town of
Gunning in southern New
South Wales, Copp told the
Selwyn Times he first became
interested in shearing while
growing up on a lifestyle block
at West Melton.
He spent a lot of time helping
a neighbouring farmer as a
weekend and after school
job.
“Whenever they used to do
the shearing on his place, I was
the first one in there as a little
fellow, picking up the fleece
and stuff,” Copp said.

push to
expand
Rolleston

CARTER GROUP is determined
to push Rolleston out west as the
company prepares to launch its
second appeal relating to the area.
Currently Dunns Crossing Rd
forms the western boundary of
the town, but Carter Group wants
to establish 3770 sections in four
separate blocks along the undeveloped
side of the road, from
State Highway One to Selwyn Rd.
The company was turned down
last year by the district council for
two of the blocks, accounting for
2100 sections, a decision it has appealed
to the Environment Court.
The company is likely to
be turned down soon for the
remaining two blocks, following
a hearing commissioner recommendation
last month.
Commissioner Paul Thomas
recommended the district
council decline the Carter Group
rezoning applications, named
Plan Change 81 and Plan Change
82, pertaining to the two blocks.

rainbow over their town
on Thursday about
8.45pm. Resident Sean

rainbow, and that it had a
complete second rainbow

Tourists
fail to stop,
Tesla hire
car ruined

A $140,000 Tesla hire car was
extensively damaged in a two-car
crash last Thursday.
Hororata Volunteer Fire Brigade
chief Bruce Sayer said the driver
failed to stop at a stop sign at the
intersection of Coleridge Rd and
Scenic Route 72 at Windwhistle.
While the driver and three passengers
suffered minor injuries
following the crash, the 2022 model
car would most likely have to be
written off. The group of overseas
tourists had been visiting Terrace
Downs, and were on their way back
to their cruise ship at Lyttelton.
Sayer was grateful no-one was seriously
hurt in the crash, although
two people from the vehicle that
was hit were taken by ambulance to
Ashburton with moderate injuries.
He was also grateful that despite
extensive damage to the Tesla it
had not caught fire, as electric car
battery fires in general were difficult
to extinguish.
“We wouldn’t have had enough
water in the two trucks we had
there to put it out. When they
decide to burn, they go like a
Roman candle,” Sayer said.

“We’ve been quite lucky in terms
of recruitment, we haven’t had a lot
of applicants, but we’ve had high
quality applicants,” he said.
Bass said the teacher shortage was
a significant problem.
“Ongoing staffing right across
the country is a major issue, we’re
in the midst of a staffing crisis, but
I’m very lucky – touch wood – that
we’re fully staffed.
“The college recruited one new
teacher from the UK and one from
Fiji.”

Shearer’s self-belief
propels him forward

He left St Thomas of
Canterbury College at the end
of year 9 to attend Telford Rural
Polytechnic at Balclutha for one
year.
“I didn’t like school and I just
wanted to be on the land doing
something.”
It was at the polytech where he
got to first shear a sheep, at age
15.
“I loved it, the physicality of
it, and also the money side of
things. What some farm jobs
paid in a week, shearers were
making that in a day. It made
sense to me if I could get the
wool off these sheep, I could
make a lot more.”
At the age of 16 he was
working full-time as a shearer,
a job which has taken him
throughout his home country
as well as Australia, America
and Europe. He has also been
to the Himalayas, where he was
involved in an initiative to teach
local farmers how to machine
shear so they could profit from
their sheep.

shearing contract business,

spending other days in the
gym training for world record
attempts.
Copp is the current holder of
a second world title, as one of
five team members who shore
the most lambs in eight hours, a
record attained in 2015.
He is now gearing up for a
solo record attempt in late May,
for shearing the most merino
ewes in eight hours. The current
record is 497.
“I want to get it over 500, I’m
well into the 400s. I’m putting all
the training in to have a decent
attempt at it,” Copp said.
His training regime is
gruelling. After a full day in the
shed shearing, he will head out
for a 20km run with a weighted
vest on, or hit the rowing
machine for more than an hour.
This stood him in good stead
for the most recent world record
success.
“I knew I had the stamina and
the cardio to back it up if things
went my way,” Copp said.
“Your body is telling you to
ease up a bit, but you have to
control your mind and sort of
push through the pain.”
The pain had been felt most in
his lower back and legs, due to
having to maintain a bent-over
standing position for hours on
end.
Exhausted while talking to
journalists after the event, Copp
said he had not expected to shear
as many sheep as he did.
“I just tried to stay positive
even though I was in a little bit of
pain here and there, but I always
believed in myself,” he said.

Artists step outside
the chair for charity

“WHAT ARE we going to do
with these dusty old chairs?”
That was the question
Ellesmere Heritage Park Trust
members had for each other as
they cleared out items from the
Selwyn Heritage Centre museum
at Leeston. It was 2020, and
they were referring to dozens of
identical chairs that had been
donated over the years.
The stackable chairs, from
Christchurch furniture
manufacturer W. Toomey Ltd’s
Staka range, were once a staple
of schools, community halls and
churches.
Members decided the rather
plain wooden seats could be
transformed with a splash of
paint, and soon became inspired
by Christchurch’s Pop Up
Penguins project, which saw
colourfully decorated penguins
displayed around the city.
Today the old, dusty chairs
have been turned into works of
art, which will be individually
auctioned off next month to raise
funds for the museum.
Chairs for Heritage co-convenor
Mary Cameron said initially
the project was to be held in
2021, but was postponed due to
Covid restrictions.
Late last year they made about
40 chairs available for artists and
other members of the public to
take away and paint, almost all of
which have now been completed.
Chairs are displayed at
Lakeland Art Gallery, Leeston
Library, some Leeston and
Rolleston businesses, and the district
council chambers. Further
display areas are likely to be
added prior to the auction.
Cameron said not only had the
chairs been painted but some had
also been turned into sculptures
– including a lake fly, a running
man and a Scottish terrier.
“A lot of people have really
stepped outside the square and
thought very creatively about
what they are doing,” she said.
“The fact that people have
taken hours and hours of work
to support our initiative, that’s
wonderful.”
Chair artists had been from all
walks of life and all ages, and included
identities such as Wonky
Donkey writer Craig Smith, who
had been invited to paint a chair
by a trust volunteer who was a
fan of his books, as well as mayor
Sam Broughton and Selwyn MP
Nicola Grigg.
Cameron said money raised
at the auction, to be held next
month, would go towards
turning the museum from a large
tin shed into a fit-for-purpose
building. People who could not
make the auction were invited to
put in silent bids prior.

TWENTY years since Australian
rockers Hoodoo Gurus last
played in New Zealand, the band
is set to headline Selwyn Sounds.
Sir Dave Dobbyn, Gin
Wigmore, Mi Sex, Stellar*, Greg
Johnson, Blam Blam Blam and
Zephyr will also grace the stage
during the one day festival at
Lincoln Domain on March 4.
Fans of Hoodoo Gurus can
look forward to hits like What’s
my Scene, Like Wow – Wipe
Out, Bittersweet and 1000 Miles
Away.
Wigmore, a United Statesbased
Kiwi, will start her New
Zealand tour at the event and
Blam Blam Blam will be the first
big name act to take the stage.
Promoter David Parlane said
the first band on stage at 11am
will up-and-coming Canterbury
group, Zephyr. The band features
members of The Jehts, which
won the Christchurch Smokefree
Rockquest and were third in the
national final.
“They’re a group of four
people, very much a classic rock
band, they’ve got three original
songs. I’ve been to a couple of
their gigs and they’re a great little
group.”
Parlane and his business
partner launched Selwyn
Sounds in 2017 after a causal
conversation over drinks.
“Actually it was my business
partner [Craig Bradford] idea.
He said: ‘Why do we have to go
into Christchurch to see music?’
He then prompted me to do
something about six months
after that.”
Thirty-five vendors will also be
on site, selling everything from
pizza and Indian food to coffee,
ice cream and more.
“It’s like a mini food festival,”
Parlane said.
Along with the opportunity
to see and hear a great line
up of bands, he says the event
also benefits the community,
with 200 staff employed on the

day and local organisations

“Lincoln High School students
are looking after the car park
and all the funds they gather
from people parking there go
directly back to [the] school.
We have the leadership group
from the high school helping
us with scanning people at the
gate. They’re the face of Selwyn
Sounds.
“We also have the organisaton
Red Frogs keeping an eye on
people and helping people out
if they need a drink of water or
to ‘chill out’ somewhere. The
Lincoln Lizards rugby team
is running one of the bars,
and that it part of their major
fundraising,” Parlane said.
He said the event promotes
the district in New Zealand and
Australia with Hoodoo Gurus
on the bill. Due to the Covid
restrictions, Selwyn Sounds was
cancelled a month before it was
to take place last year.
“It was devastating for
everybody – artists, crew the
whole industry really,” Parlane
said.
He said the festival was “not a
cheap exercise”, costing “millions
of dollars” to put on.

different year in terms of ticket
sales, purely with what we’ve
been through with cancellations,
etc.
“People have been holding off
a little bit, but we are certainly
starting to see a significant lift
over the last seven days, and
we are looking pretty good for
another sell out event,” Parlane
said.

Shell of a job for ex-fire chief
Former Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Jeremy Greenwood has been a dedicated
firefighter since he was a teenager. The 45-year-old spoke to Susan Sandys following his
retirement after almost 30 years with the service
When did you first join the fire
brigade?
I joined the Southbridge
brigade in 1994, when I was
about 17. I was brought up on a
farm in Southbridge. I was pretty
young, but I was always keen on
the fire brigade as a young fellow.
So when I had the opportunity
to join, I took it. I enjoyed the
firefighting side of being involved
and the challenges that brought.
I moved to Lincoln when I was
about 21, closer to the city, so I
transferred to the Lincoln brigade.
I became chief in 2015 and retired
November 30 last year.
What are some of the bigger
callouts you have dealt with?
Over the years, in Lincoln we
have seen some really big fires
and incidents. We attended a
lot of big vegetation fires, the
McLeans Island fire many years
ago, the West Melton fire in
2003. Recently we were heavily
involved in the Port Hills fire in
2017, we were some of the first
crews to arrive for that. We were
the first trucks to respond into
the city after the 2011 February
earthquake, and we spent many
weeks rotating crews and helping
out. Also the first earthquake in
September, that was a busy time
for us as well. Damage occurred
around Lincoln. It felt like we
were dealing with chimneys every
day having to secure or bring
down unstable chimneys around
the district.
Did you feel sad retiring from
something that has been such a
big part of your life?
It was quite emotional. It was
sort of mixed emotions – sad I
was leaving, but the thought of
having a summer where I didn’t
have to work at fire brigade was
quite a nice feeling. I had thought
about it for a long time. It was
a real hard decision to make
because I really enjoyed it. Not
so much the firefighting side of
things anymore, but the challenge
of being chief and leading a group
of great people sort of spun my
wheels.
And saving lives, I guess?
Did you have any spectacular
moments of doing something
like that?
Not personally, but I do
remember as a crew we attended
a house fire in Lincoln one
morning and the crew made
access into the house and
removed an unconscious patient.
They brought him out and saved
his life pretty much. That’s one
that sticks in mind. I wasn’t the
chief then, I think I was driving
that day.
Was the brigade involved in
rescuing people trapped after
the 2011 earthquake?
Not directly. I do recall the
night of the Christchurch
earthquake we ended up in the
city and we had to check a
report of people stuck in the
elevator of the old Holiday
Inn in Cashel St.
It was so eerie cause noone
was in there. There was
cracks in the walls, so it was
quite an eerie feeling I guess,
searching for people. It was
about eight o’clock at night,
the report had come in earlier
in the day, they had obviously got
themselves out.
That’s how stretched emergency
services were that day, it was
hours and hours before you got
there. It was just chaos really. The
thing I remember is coming out
of the Holiday Inn and looking
up at the Grand Chancellor.
There were people in the top
window of the Grand Chancellor
waving out calling for help. We
ended up going ‘Oh my, that
place looks like it is on
a lean.’
That was
something
that stuck
in my mind
from that
earthquake.

‘Carnage on the roads’ takes a toll

Did no-one know there were
people stuck in the Grand
Chancellor at that point?
Not that we were aware of. We
got Urban Search and Rescue
guys to come along, they made
access into the Grand Chancellor
and got them down.
What were some of your most
challenging callouts?
Big vegetation fires were always
most challenging, but motor
vehicle accidents as well were
always challenging and can
be a little harder to deal with
depending on the circumstances.
And I guess that’s probably one
thing I noticed coming from
Southbridge to Lincoln, we
got a lot more motor vehicle
accidents. Lincoln is always busy
for accidents. I guess the busier
roads, a lot of uncontrolled
intersections where we ended up
having a lot of issues, so I have
seen a fair bit of carnage on the
roads over the years.
How much did the Lincoln
brigade grow in your time
there?
The brigade last year got over
300 calls. When I first joined
Lincoln there were over 100.
With the increasing population
and more people on the roads,
there’s just so much more going
on. When I first came to Lincoln
there was about 20 members

and now there is about 37. The
fire station is due to be replaced
within the next, I would say,
probably five years. That station
the brigade is in now was built
in 1969. It’s due for replacement,
so FENZ are actively looking for
suitable land for where it may go.
Equipment and appliances
must have developed over that
time?
My time in Lincoln I’ve seen
probably three or four brand
new appliances come through
the door. Being a busy brigade
you tend to be looked after for
equipment. When I first joined
at Southbridge if there was any
motor vehicle accidents we had to
wait for the Burnham army truck
to come. There was no cutting
equipment in any of the local
brigades, the likes of Rolleston
didn’t have it, Leeston didn’t
have it, Lincoln didn’t have it, we
always had to wait for the army
to arrive with the cutting gear.
Lincoln self-funded their
rescue equipment originally,
there was a big community push
for donations and the same with
Leeston.
Once you had the gear, as it
aged then it was replaced by the
fire service.
Why did you retire?
It was really a matter of,
I guess, having the chance
to refocus and being young
enough to be able to refocus into
something else. Being in the
brigade since 17, it has been a
big part of my life, I don’t really
know much different. I enjoyed
every minute of it, but probably
it was a big focus on fire brigade
and not on my career.
What is your career?
I’m a company manager. I
manage a number of different
little companies I guess.
(My business partner and I)
run Southern Rainbow in
Christchurch, we run a fuel
company called BSP fuels. At
Southern Rainbow, we do the
sales and exports for the parent
company Southern Clams in
Dunedin, which harvests wild
clams. I have spent a bit of time
travelling overseas for the export
side of it, I’ve been to China
about three times, Australia,
been to the US three times. Most
of our business is on the east
coast of the US – Boston, New
York. A lot of our clams go into
that market over there. They are
exported live, they are put on
an aeroplane and in the markets
within 48 hours.

Life and business after firefighting

Do you like the taste of
clams?
I have to say yes, don’t I? They
are nice, cooked the right way.
They are popular in the Italian
restaurant market. They use
them in the whole shell for pasta
dishes, and obviously your clam
chowders and that sort of thing.
Did you study business
management after leaving
school?
No, I just worked after
leaving Ellesmere College, I
think in sixth form. I became
a labourer. I didn’t do much,
I was young and dumb really.
Wanted to earn a bit of money
and drink a bit of beer. So my
career path wasn’t the flashest.
I’m pretty lucky to have gotten to
where I have got to, there’s been
some opportunities, so it’s been
good.
How did you get into your
line of work?
When I moved to Lincoln,
I was working in town in an
automotive workshop for a year
or so then I ended up with the
company I am in, in the fuel side
of it. I actually ended up driving
a fuel tanker doing on-site fuel
deliveries for BSP Fuels. So I did
that for a few years, all around
Canterbury.
What are your hobbies?
I quite enjoy doing a bit of
mountain biking. I enjoy water

sports, jet-skiing, we enjoy
travelling. (My wife Carol and I)
are heading to the UK in April
for about three-and-a-half weeks
to see our daughter up there, we
are going through the US, we
have about a week in the US.
Has it been good bringing up
your family in Lincoln?
Lincoln is an awesome place
to bring up a family. I have
two adult stepdaughters and
a 17-year-old son. It’s not so
quiet now, it’s getting busier and
busier, but the people in Lincoln
are fantastic. It’s got good
facilities but it is not getting too
big either, not like Rolleston
which is turning into like a
suburb of Christchurch just
about. Lincoln has still got a bit
of a country charm.
Do you have any life goals?
No, one day at a time.

Census 2023 —
make sure you count
Information about how to complete the 2023 Census is on its way to residents’
mailboxes or door this month.
The census is a nationwide survey that happens every five years. Every person who
is in the country on the night of Tuesday 7 March 2023 needs to do the survey.
The responses are combined to produce statistics that provide a picture of life in
Aotearoa and how it is changing. Peoples’ identities are kept private
and confidential.
Council Chief Executive David Ward says iwi, community groups, local and central
government, and businesses all use findings from the census to inform strategic
decision making and future planning.
“We know that Selwyn is one of the fastest growing districts in the country.
Information from the census helps us determine what services and infrastructure
we need to invest in for our communities. By taking part, you help us gain a better
understanding of what you, your community and the wider Selwyn district needs
for the future,” he says.
Stats NZ, which is running the census, is doing things differently than in previous
years. This year, there will be more people out and about collecting the census
forms and more assistance is available for people who want help to fill out their
forms. People will also have more choice about how they take part and can fill
out the census forms either online or on paper. There will also be more formats
available for disabled people.

Road projects to help safe school access
Upgrades around six Selwyn schools will be helping pupils travel more safely to
school this year.
The Council has been upgrading roads, pavements, entrance ways or signage around
six schools over summer.
Upgrades have been made to the popular
shared cycling and walking pathway on
Springston Rolleston Road outside Rolleston
College to improve access and address the
problem of people parking on the pathway.
Additional line marking, signage, upgrades to
entrance ways and increased marking of cycle
and pedestrian areas have also been added
around Rolleston College. While new signage
has been added around the McLaughlins Road
access to Darfield High School, with additional
line marking to be added. This work follows on from new parking bays and a shared
cycling and walking path that was added on Boundary Road last year, to assist safe
access to Lincoln College.
A new pedestrian crossing has been added on Broadlands Drive outside Clearview
School and is being added across Markham Way near the Rolleston School entrance,
along with a shared walking and cycling path along Markham Way.
A new kea crossing has also been installed outside Clearview School along with
traffic calming and road frontage upgrades to support slower speeds and improve
safety for pupils walking or cycling to school.
The first stage of safety improvements outside West Rolleston School has also been
completed with a new, 2.5 metre wide shared path for walking and cycling on Dunns
Crossing Road, additional line marking and upgrades around the kea crossing. The
Council and Waka Kotahi have been working with the school on a package of safety
improvements to tie in with Waka Kotahi plans to develop the State Highway 1
intersection with Dunns Crossing Road as the future main southern entrance
to Rolleston.
Plans are also in place for safety upgrades outside Leeston School on Darcy Street,
while the Council has supported Waka Kotahi's upgrade of State Highway 73 through
West Melton, which will improve safe access to West Melton School.
Water wisely this summer
Be smart with your water use around the yard, as warm conditions continue.
Being water wise saves money and helps ensure there is enough available at a
steady pressure for everyone to use.
People are encouraged to avoid watering between the hours of 6–9am and
4–9pm, when usage normally peaks and puts pressure on the water supplies.
Residents can also make the most of their water by following these tips:
• Water every few days (not daily). Watering every day encourages roots to
grow at the surface, making them more vulnerable to dry spells.
• Water for short intervals to let the soil absorb more water. For example,
water for three 5-minute intervals over a couple of hours, instead of
continuous watering for 15 minutes.
• Use a watering can or hose to give you more control of where the water
goes, so you don’t water the driveway, footpath or buildings.
• Only water what needs it. Consider letting your berm dry off
during summer.
• Use mulch or cover the soil with organic matter to help your garden
retain moisture.
• Check for leaks in your hoses and taps.
• Use the right sprinkler head to ensure it is applying a gentle amount of
water. Some sprinklers apply more water than the soil can absorb.
• Choose drought-resistant plants, as these don’t require as much water.

Duck, dip, dive — dodgeball
Calling all dodgeball enthusiasts and newbies to the sport: Selwyn Sports
Centre is now taking team registrations for its upcoming
dodgeball competition.
The fast-paced, action-packed sport is
suitable for all ages and abilities, with
games happening every Tuesday night
from 7 March.
Teams of six players can register for the
competition. Each team will be able to
play multiple games every week.
Registration is $30 per team per week.

New access as work continues to
Rolleston Town Centre
After a milestone year, the next stage of works is continuing in the Rolleston
Town Centre.
The past year saw the first commercial premises, the youth space and new
roads and car parks opened, with work on further commercial premises and
car parks ongoing.
The access to Christensen Parade from Rolleston Drive (past the Rolleston
Community Centre) will be closed until the end of April while the final car
parks are constructed. The Rōhutu Way entrance from Tennyson Street is
open and a temporary road will connect Rōhutu Way to Christensen Parade.
This entrance remains one-way with cars exciting via the temporary road to
Christensen Parade and then Moore Street.
Further landscaping work, new public spaces and upgrades to the Rolleston
Reserve will follow this year.

Council Resource Recovery and Waste Manager Andrew
Boyd says that in Selwyn, recycling picked up by the kerbside
collection service is taken to EcoSort, along with recycling from
neighbouring districts.
The open day will be an opportunity to learn about the facility’s
recent $16.8m upgrade, tour the materials recovery facility, ask
staff questions and get an up close look at a recycling truck.
“Having an understanding of where your recycling goes and
how the different machines process it can be a great way to
reinforce good recycling habits, such as making sure your recycling is clean and that you’re only
putting accepted materials in your yellow bin,” says Andrew.
The free open day is on 18 February 9am–1pm at 21 Parkhouse Road, Wigram (next to EcoDrop).

Prebbleton look to go one
better under new head coach

COVID MIGHT have delayed
Simon Fitzgerald taking the
reins as Prebbleton head coach,
but it is now full steam ahead to
get the club to its first Ellesmere
senior rugby championship since
1974.
Fitzgerald, from Belfast,
Northern Ireland, was due at the
club in 2020, but lockdowns got
in the way of his travel plans.
He arrived in September
last year, taking up the role of
Prebbleton’s director of rugby,
which he will now combine with
head coach of the division 1 side.
“I have coached in a lot of places,
but never been this excited for
a rugby season before,” he said.
Prebbleton have won the
coveted Coleman Shield just
twice in its 104-year history, the
last time in 1974. However, the
team came close last year, with a
heartbreaking one-point loss to
Darfield, while in 2021, the team
went down to Southbridge 28-24
in the final.
Fitzgerald is the only head
coaching change in Ellesmere’s
division 1 teams for 2023, but
many teams have other coaching
changes. Last year’s Coleman
Shield winners, Darfield, have
Mervyn Todd leading the team
again, while Waihora, Southbridge,
and Hornby’s coaching
teams are largely unchanged.
This year will be Fitzgerald’s
first coaching in the Southern
Hemisphere.
“New Zealand has been on the
radar for quite some time, so it’s
great to finally be here,” he said.

After he stopped playing
rugby around the age of 20 due
to injury, Fitzgerald “fell” into
coaching with his local club at
the time. Fast forward 10 years,
he has coached across the world,
– including the Netherlands and
Canada under-20 representative
teams – and has been director of
rugby at several clubs.
This season Prebbleton also
have some slight changes to their
on-field leadership team, with
last year’s co-captain Cam Hay
in the United Kingdom. Lock
Tom Brand has been confirmed
as captain after sharing the role
with Hay last year.
Last Monday Prebbleton’s
preseason training programme
kicked off, along with Fitzgerald’s
first opportunity to lead
a combined group of the club’s
senior players.
“I just want to give our
amateur players the freedom to
express themselves while playing,”
he said.
“We’re taking a different way
than before, based on feedback
I’ve heard, with different ways of
looking at things.”
“We’re not the All Blacks, we’re
not the Crusaders, I just want
our players to have a place . . . to
enjoy themselves and have fun,”
he said of his coaching focus.
Fitzgerald also added how
impressed he was of the environment
surrounding players at
Prebbleton.
“I’ve been pretty blown away
by the committed volunteer
base at Prebbleton, there’s some
amazing people and I don’t think
volunteers are credited enough.”
Fitzgerald will take over
the head coach role from
Dave Kettles who is no
longer coaching due to other
commitments.

A COOL, calm and collected
drive behind Lone Wolf saw
Sarah O’Reilly reach 200 wins
in the sulky at Oamaru on
Thursday.
Being tucked away four back
on the markers for much of race
6 wasn’t a problem for the Brent
and Tim White-trained pacer,
with O’Reilly expertly plotting a
passage to win.
After being stuck on 199 wins
for a couple of weeks, the junior
reinswoman was delighted to
tick off her 200-win milestone.
“It is a bit of a relief,” she said.
“(I was stuck on 199) since
Ashburton, so it has been a
couple of weeks – it was a bit
frustrating.”
Lone Wolf charged home late
to seal his victory.
Though the horse made some
mistakes early in his career, he is
showing plenty of improvement
with his manners.
Lone Wolf ownership includes
people from Lincoln.
“He is still learning, he was a
bit of a trick early on,” O’Reilly
said.
“He wouldn’t put his feet in the
right places, but we changed a bit
of gear on him and he is pretty
good now.
“He was a bit flat around the
corner because he gets his head
on the side a bit.
“I just had to wait for him to
balance up and when he did he
sprinted really well.”
The Brent and Tim White
stable have produced eight wins
already this season at a strong
strike-rate.
O’Reilly joined their team last
year and is loving her time there.
“The horses are doing really
good at the moment, which is
great,” she said.
“They do a good job with
them, they are really good people
to work for.”
A regular at race meetings
from Manawatu to Canterbury
and Southland, O’Reilly only has
one plan following her 200-win
achievement – to keep driving
winners all across the country.
Another milestone was ticked
off at Oamaru on Thursday when
Brad Mowbray produced his first
quinella as a trainer.
Second Amendment continued
an outstanding run of form,
taking out race 8 over his
stablemate Mighty Reactor.
In another success at Oamaru
on Thursday, Graeme Telfer
produced his 50th win as a
trainer when Barrytown took out
race 2.

As children head

are some suggestions to
help prepare a healthy
breakfast and fill up their
lunchboxes
Muesli slice
Ingredients
Makes 24 slices
2 cups rolled oats
1 cup wholemeal flour
½ cup desiccated coconut
2 tsp cinnamon
¾ cup sultanas or other mixed
fruit
½ cup canola oil
½ cup honey
2 bananas, mashed
Directions
Preheat oven to 180
deg C.
Line a slice tray with non-stick
baking paper.
In a mixing bowl, add the
dry ingredients and mix
through.
Add the remaining ingredients
and mix with a wooden spoon
until fully combined.
Place mixture into a lined slice
tray and press down firmly.
Cook for 30 mins until golden.
Allow to cool before cutting
into squares.

pudding
Ingredients
Serves 4
2 cups coconut cream
½ cup chia seeds (black or white)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1-2 Tbsp coconut sugar or maple
syrup
Options:
2 cups fresh or frozen berries
2 Tbsp raw cacao powder, 6
prunes
Dried fruit such as
apricots, dates, cranberries, seeds
and nuts
Directions
Pour the coconut cream into
a large bowl, add the chia seeds,
vanilla extract and sweetener.
Whisk together until combined.
Pour into a sealable container
and store in the fridge (ideally
overnight).
Whole-wheat and dulse
crackers with za’atar
Ingredients
Makes 40
Time 30min
185g (1¼ cups) whole wheat
flour
2 Tbsp ground flaxseeds
(linseeds)
2 Tbsp za’atar
2 tsp rapadura sugar
2 tsp dried dulse flakes (see note)
A pinch of fine salt
80ml (⅓ cup) extra-virgin
coconut oil, melted and cooled
60ml (¼ cup) water
Black sesame seeds to garnish
Directions
Preheat the oven to 180 deg C.
In a large bowl, combine the
flour, flaxseeds, za’atar, sugar,
dulse and salt, and mix well.
Add the coconut oil and
use your fingers to rub the
ingredients until they are all
coated in the oil and start to
clump together. Add the water
and bring the dough together
into a ball. It should clump and
hold together but not be sticky.
Add a little more water if the
dough is too dry or flour if it is
too sticky.
Place a sheet of parchment
paper on the kitchen bench. Take
half the dough, place it in the
middle of the paper and cover
with another sheet of parchment
paper. Roll out the dough until it
is the thickness of a coin (about
2mm).
Remove the top sheet of paper
and sprinkle over the sesame
seeds and a little salt. Return the
top sheet and roll again to press
the seeds and salt into the dough.
Remove the top sheet and
transfer the bottom sheet, along
with the dough, to a baking tray.
Score the dough into 20 or
so squares and prick well with
a fork. Repeat with the second
batch of dough.
Bake until golden, about 15-20
minutes.
Allow to cool a little before
cutting along the score marks.
The crackers will store well for
a couple of weeks in a sealed
container in a cupboard.
Note: Dulse is a red seaweed
that is available dried as whole
leaves or in flakes. This recipe
calls for the latter.

1. Service and maintain your
vehicle regularly
A well-maintained and regularly
serviced vehicle could reduce fuel
consumption by up to 4 per cent,
according to MTA (Motor Trade
Association). Use your car’s recommended
oil and fuel to help it run more efficiently
with less fuel.
2. Inflate tyres and align
wheels correctly
Ensure your tyre pressure and wheel
alignment are correct, as underinflated
tyres and incorrect steering will lead to
more fuel use.
3. Fill your tank
Removing the cap allows fuel to
evaporate, so using most of your
petrol before refilling may improve
fuel economy. However, there can be
contaminants at the bottom of the tank,
so a good compromise is to fill up when
there is a quarter tank remaining.
4. Drive smoothly
Be aware and anticipate stops when
driving. Accelerate smoothly and slowly
and stop gradually to avoid harsh
braking. Automatic vehicles only need
a light acceleration for the transmission
to change up. If you have cruise control
on long flat roads, you can maintain
a constant speed and reduce fuel
consumption.
5. Avoid long idling
When a modern vehicle is operating
efficiently, there’s no need for it to be
‘warmed up’. You could turn off your
engine if you are stopped for an extended
time. Avoid rush hour driving, as stopand-go
driving burns more fuel.
6. Remove unnecessary
weight
Weight adds to fuel consumption, so
offload any unnecessary items, such as
golf clubs, storage boxes, cycle racks and
roof racks, if not required.
7. Driving at the speed limit
It isn’t just about following the law; it
can also help lower fuel costs. The MTA
advises that fuel consumption increases by
around 6 per cent for every 10km/h faster
you go over 90km/h.
8. Air conditioning
When driving around town, use an
open window and fan; at higher speeds,
an open window creates greater drag, and
it is more fuel-efficient to use your air
conditioning.
9. Use your vehicle less
Driving less is an obvious way to save
fuel. Plan and combine several trips into
one, and for short trips, consider walking
or cycling if possible.

Jovellana suit sheltered areas
More plants, water pump keep algae at bay
Without a little TLC, water features can turn into algae soup,
reports James Wong
TO MY MIND, there is no other
garden feature that can provide
as much joy as a pond, reflecting
light, expanding the palette
of plants that can be grown,
providing enormous benefits to
wildlife.
Yet at this time of year, many
pond owners can find the dream
of a gin-clear reflective surface
often turns into a swamp of pea
soup. Here are a few simple tips
for tackling the issue.
Let’s start with the good
news. Combating the algae
responsible for the cloudy
green of ponds is theoretically
really straightforward. Much
like plants, algae are essentially
living solar panels, and need a
constant supply of light, nutrients
and carbon dioxide to survive.
However, unlike plants, they
do not have the ability to store
energy in roots or leaves to tide
them over lean periods, so if they
are deprived of light, nutrients or
carbon dioxide, they should die
off as quickly as they grow.
Now, here’s the bad news. In
practice this can be trickier than
it sounds. One of the best ways
to sort out an existing problem is
to add more plants to the pond.
This helps in two ways, as plants
directly compete with the algae
for light and nutrients, which are
the two factors over which you as
a gardener have the most control.
This is particularly the case
with large-leaved, fast-growing
species such as waterlilies that
quickly expand out to block
out the sun while drawing up
minerals from the bottom of
the pond. As a general guide,
covering about 50% of the surface
is ideal.
These results can be further
boosted with floating plants
such as frogbit (Hydrocharis
morsus-ranae) and water soldier
(Stratiotes aloides), which do
a great job without becoming
invasive like duckweed. As a
useful side effect, cutting down
light levels also reduces the
temperature of the water, which
further slows down algal growth.
Another simple thing to do is
to add a water pump with a filter.
This removes solid particles of
organic matter from fallen leaves
and dead plants, which break
down to fuel algae populations. It
also also helps to aerate the water,
which boosts submerged plant
growth, allowing them to out
compete the algae.
It is important to remember
it can take a while for these
initiatives to kick in. Plants do
not cover a pond overnight, and
pumps do not miraculous filter all
the nutrients in a day. So patience
is key, but that’s gardening for
you!

Jovellana genus, two are native
to New Zealand and two are
from South America.
Jovellana are typically semievergreen
perennial plants with
a mounding or creeping habit. A
striking feature of this genus are
the charming flowers, patterned
with distinctive bright spots,
a trait shared with its closely
related South American genus
Calceolaria.
Jovellana violacea, from South
America, bears mint-shaped
leaves atop reddish stems.
Its bell-shaped flowers are
light purple in colour, with eyecatching
purple spots dusted
over a yellow interior. This
mound-forming shrub displays
masses of these dainty fingernail
sized flowers from spring
through to summer.
The second South American
species, Jovellana punctata,
bears similar purple speckled
flowers, though showing
subtle differences in colour
and size.
Our native species of Jovellana
are just as charming. Jovellana
sinclairii is a subshrub –
herbaceous with soft woody
lower stems, Jovellana repens
grows into a low mat up to 2m
wide. Both bear the distinctive
speckled flowers.
Jovellana is thought to have
evolved in South America and
to have made it to New Zealand
relatively recently.
Grow Jovellana in a sheltered,
semi-shaded area where they
can be protected from harsh
afternoon sunlight.
Being cool-climate species,
Jovellana may not thrive in
warmer climates.
Whether growing the South
American or New Zealand
species of Jovellana, these plants
with their delightful flowers will
brighten up any garden.

Mixed parentage for EV Polestar
VOLVO MADE its intentions
clear quite early when the world
was viewing the prospect electric
vehicles would be a big part of our
motoring future.
It indicated all Volvos would
be electrified by 2040 and what’s
more it has a major interest in an
offshoot company – Polestar –
which makes just electric vehicles
which are designed, engineered
and developed with Volvo’s input in
Sweden but are made in China and
are landing here in big numbers –
thanks to the demand Kiwi buyers
are placing on electric vehicles.
You can guarantee Polestar
will have a complete line-up of
models soon, but this evaluation
focuses on Polestar 2 which is a
mid-size, compact sedan already
scooping awards worldwide for its
style, performance and all-round
desirability.
The Polestar 2 lands here in
three specifications, the variants
depend on how much range or
performance you want. If you are
wanting to be part of the New
Zealand Government’s Clean Car
Programme discount scheme there
are two models that sit beneath the
$80k threshold.
The standard range model with a
single motor driving out the front
wheels will give you 478km on a
single charge, along with a 7.4sec
time to make 100km/h from a
standstill. It is priced at $68,990.
There is a long range single
motor model that will take
you 551km and has the same
acceleration time, it sits at $78,990.
The evaluation car was the rangetopping
$93,900 long range dual
motor model that supplies power
to all four corners, it has a range of
487km and will scorch through to
100km/h in 4.7sec.
As these latter figures suggest,
the Polestar 2 is a quick car and
provides the buyer with all of the
credentials he/she would want
in an EV. In terms of charging, it
is also as quick as its opposition.
According to the manufacturers it
will fast charge from a designated
charge port in 35min (10 to 80 per
cent), and if you are confined to a
three-pin domestic output like I
am you can expect it to take eight
hours to reach full capacity from
low charge.
I’m pleased to say the charge
cable has decent length at 6m,
that is important to me because
I have to run the cable from a
garage socket that isn’t close to the
evaluation car parking space on my
property. I was pleasantly surprised
with the charge times domestically,
I could charge from 60 to 90 per
cent in just a few hours. Polestar
recommends a constant maximum
of 90 per cent charge, that way
the batteries will be preserved for
longevity.
Driving the Polestar 2 doesn’t
require any special technique, the
drive functions are quite universal,
the drive selector is a push/pull
mechanism sited centrally on the

console between the two front
seats. Up front there’s a large
central touch screen display that
will navigate you to all of the
vehicle’s functions – safety, comfort
and convenience. This device is
very similar to what I recognise
from the Volvo models I’ve driven
recently. It incorporates a large
power supply readout that will
keep you well informed of battery
capacity and other associated
graphics including live-stream
Google maps.
Because of its position in the
market, the Polestar 2 has a sporty
focus and it drives quite keenly.
You can expect that early surge of
power as it shoots off the line, but
you can also feel an urgency that
doesn’t wilt right through until
after the speed limit is reached.
That’s something buyer will need
to be mindful of, the smooth, silent
and stealth-like way it accelerates is
quite entertaining, but speed does
sneak up quickly and the legal limit
arrives before you know it.
The major benefit of the
acceleration process is its
overtaking time, if you are heading
out on the highway and want to
make that manoeuvre you can
expect a 4.2sec time to make
120km/h from 80km/h.
I took the evaluation car on
much the same route I would
normally travel in a fossil-fuelled
car, heading west towards the

its healthy range, it’s a car that
you can relax in and know that
it will take you on an extended
journey without fear of running
out of charge, especially now that
the charging infrastructure in the
region is growing rapidly.
When it comes time to tackling
the high country winding roads,
the Polestar 2’s handling balance is
biased towards sporty. The spring
and damper rates aren’t overly
firmed, but there is an emphasis
on controlling body movement
along with solid steering feel and
feedback, the latter can be chosen
from three weights – light to firm.

there is a lot of contact with the
road surface and that is relayed
well to the driver. Turn-in is direct
and a massive amount of surety is
transmitted from the rear as the
force generated by the rear motor is
noticed throughout the vehicle.
While there is that emphasis on
performance, it doesn’t come at
the cost of occupant comfort. You
can guarantee the designers have
incorporated that factor in the
development process. The Polestar
2 is a compact car at just 4.6m,
but that does translate to interior
space. There is room to spread out,
and when you are inside there’s a
wealth of features that keep you
comfortable for every journey.
Of course, there is full leather
trim, the front seat occupants
get heated seats that are also
electrically adjustable. Other major
items of fitment include a full
panoramic roof, and I particularly
like not having a start/stop button;
when you choose “park’’ in the
transmission and leave the vehicle
it will all shut down and lock
automatically, restarting when the
driver returns to the seat.
You can guarantee Volvo will
be looking at how well Polestar is
accepted by today’s market, and
I’m in no doubt that it will set the
benchmark in key areas in terms of
sales and overall performance.
However, there are a lot of
electric vehicles in the global
market and neither company can
afford to drop the ball in terms of
staying competitive.

taking entries and registering results and dealing with any enquires. This position is
largely based around the two months leading up to our annual October show.

A DARFIELD farmer has
spoken of watching a man leap into
the flooded Hawkins River to try and
save himself after a helicopter winch
rescue operation failed.
Rod May had taken his tractor to
the scene on Greendale Rd, to try and
reach the middle-aged man who had
been clinging to the branches of a tree
in the rising waters on Sunday night.
The man had driven into the
flooded river, escaped from his car
and ca led emergency services from
his ce lphone which he managed to
keep with him.
Ultimately, a second helicopter
winch operation plucked the man
to safety after he was swept downstream.
It was a happy ending to the
ordeal which had lasted more than
three hours. The rescue was among
several in Canterbury on Sunday in
flooded rivers.
May said he and his family had just
had dinner when a neighbour alerted
them. Arriving about 8.50pm, he saw
the floodwaters were too high for the
tractor, however, he used its lights for
i luminating the site where the man

A BAR patron who won $1200
on the pokies may have been
targeted by thieves moments after
she co lected the money.
A group of men who were in
the bar a the same time are the
focus of police inquiries. It is
believed they watched her being
paid, and then quickly swooped.
The incident happened at The
Famous Grouse Hotel in Lincoln
two weeks ago.
After she was paid out a the
bar, the men who had been
