TAYLORS MISTAKE stood
out at the Canterbury surf
lifesaving championships over
the weekend, despite intense
heat and a shark sighting at
Waimairi Beach.
Taylor Chamberlain (main
photo) took out the top title
in the men’s open ski, board,
and surf race, as well as placing
second in the open two-person
board relay with Joe Hall. He
was also part of the open relay
team that placed third.

women’s open ski, surf and
board races. Agatha Weston

under-19 surf race, and second

Taylors Mistake finished
second overall in the club
points table with 40 wins,
although half the event’s
programme was postponed
due to a shark sighting on

table with an impressive 114
points and 67 wins, while
Sumner was third with 17.
The event’s canoe racing
programme has been
rescheduled to February 24,
while the remainder of the
competition will take place on
March 5.

mission to keep the rates increase
below 5.6 per cent.

removing nearly $13.4m from
the Banks Peninsula capital plan
for 2024 and nearly $10.8m from

egg poaching cruise ship crew

LYTTELTON SuperValue is
facing pressure from cruise
ship crew members desperate to
buy eggs.
It comes after more than 20
crew from a cruise ship berthed
at Port Chalmers in Dunedin
last week queued to buy eggs at
the local Four Square.
They would have cleaned out
the shop’s entire egg supply if
staff had not stopped them.

approached by cruise ship
operators wanting eggs.

“I have to
look after the
customers who
shop with us
regularly.”
A nationwide shortage of
eggs has impacted supermarkets
across New Zealand, leading to
rationing and bare shelves.
De Thier said he ordered
more than 450 dozen eggs
last week – but received
just 72.
“They were gone in less than
two days,” he said.
“We are in dire straits at the
moment.”
De Thier said he knows of one
supermarket owner who offered
to drive six hours to pick up
some eggs from a South Island
supplier, only to be told: “You
can drive here if you like, but we
can’t give you any eggs.”

“We are getting around the
problem to some extent by
supplying dried and frozen
egg product imported from
Europe,” she said.
The lack of eggs is due to a
shortage of laying hens after a
new code of welfare system was
introduced.
It caused the price of eggs to
increase by about 16 per cent
compared to a year ago.
On Tuesday, the cost dozen
eggs ranged from $6.40 to $8.99
on the Lyttelton Supervalue
website.

Three-week
closure to
cool library
THE LYTTELTON Library and
Service Centre will close for three
weeks from February 20 so a new
heating system can be put in.
City council head of libraries
Carolyn Robertson said the old
boiler will be replaced with a
modern air conditioning system
that will provide cost-efficient
heating and cooling.
“And make everyone’s visits
to Lyttelton Library much more
comfortable,” Robertson said.
“The current boiler needs to
be restarted three or four times
a week, especially during winter,
which makes heating the building
far more costly than it needs to be.”
Work to decommission the
boiler and remove the chimney
will start on Monday, but won’t
impact visitors until the following
week’s closure. The library will
reopen on March 13.
“We won’t offer a temporary
library service in this case due
to the relatively short period of
closure, but our mobile library will
be visiting a couple of times each
week,” said Robertson.
The library’s free wi-fi will
continue to operate. The closest
libraries to use during the closure
are Matuku Takotako: Sumner
Centre, South Library and
Linwood Library.

The impact of the plan changes
will, in many cases, be to place
the spending burden on future
councils to deal with, along with
any cost escalations.

“Cost escalation is a potential
side effect, but given the
rationale for the adjustments,
there isn’t really any alternative,”
Davidson said.
To illustrate the impact of the
spending plan changes, while the
city council plans to cut $13.4m
in 2024, spending on Banks
Peninsula projects will increase
substantially in 2028 and 2029.
In 2028 an additional $9m is
budgeted and in 2029 an extra
$15m.
“I personally remain more
committed than ever to pushing
for the infrastructure and
spending support needed across
Banks Peninsula to improve
the environment and support
our communities,” said
Davidson.
The community board will
have the opportunity to make
it’s own submission on the plan
when it goes out for consultation
on March 10, and in the hearings
that will follow.

While much of the events industry was shut
down through the peak of the Covid-19
pandemic the Sea2Sky Challenge managed
to navigate through the guidelines better
than most holding events in late 2020 along
with 2021 and 2022. The event returns on
March 12th for the eighth edition without

SailGP to assist Ōmaru Stream project
THE ŌMARU Stream
restoration project will benefit by
$25,000 from the SailGP event in
Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour
next month.
The project, led by e Hapū o
Ngāti Wheke Rāpaki, aims to regenerate
the forests surrounding
the harbour by restoring vegetation,
reducing pests and enabling
biodiversity to flourish, as well as
reducing sediment running into
the water.
SailGP and ChristchurchNZ
are partnering with the team at
Rāpaki to support the project.
In every city it visits, SailGP
teams up with a local community
purpose project as part of the
league’s host city climate
action charter.
The project is supported
by significant volunteer
efforts. So far, 11,262 native
trees have been planted
with a further 16,000 plants

in June next year.

John Kottier said the work is
guided by principles of collaboration,
connection and mātauranga
Māori.
“This is all about mātauranga
– the Māori world view.
If we don’t fix the whenua
(the land) then we won’t
fix the ocean. There is a lot
of things going on in the
harbour. On a wonderful
day it looks pristine, but
it’s carnage going on
under the water. Siltation,
invasive species, all of those
things,” he said.
In Te Ao Māori, ‘Ki Uta Ki Tai’
refers to the journey of wai as
it falls from the sky, flows over
the land, and makes its way out
to sea. Ki Uta Ki Tai describes a
Māori understanding of sustainable
land management, where
each part of the ecosystem has
a relationship to the other, and
nothing can be separated.
“This idea of complete
interconnectivity between
natural resources is what
motivates us both in the field
and when planning for future
restoration efforts in the
harbour,” said Kottier.
“We’re lucky here in Whakaraupō,
our purpose is never
far from sight. When working
on the whenua there’s a view
straight out to the moana and
vice versa, a constant reminder
that what restoration we do on
the land has a direct impact on
the sustainability of the water.”
The SailGP funding is for
a water storage facility and
to partially fund wetland
construction on the stream.
The wetland will capture
sediment to prevent discharge
to the sea and provide habitat
for a wide range of species.

Outward Bound an experience of a lifetime:
‘You have nothing to lose and much to gain’

Lewis-Sandford.
“You have nothing to lose and
so much to gain.”
Ella won the 2022 Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation’s Outward
Bound scholarship, and has just
returned from the 21-day leadership
course.
“I have always wanted to go,
ever since I was a kid, and to
be sponsored was just the most
amazing opportunity. Because
I was fairly fit, I found it more
mentally than physically challenging.
Having said that, I did
wonder how I was going to do a
half marathon when I had just
completed a challenging threeday
tramp.”
Outward Bound puts the
aspiring leaders into groups of 14,
and it is the close bonds that form
within each group that helps get
everyone across the line. They are
also taught the skills needed to
achieve each of the tasks.
“We were taught to train the
brain to think positively, as a
positive mind set means you
can achieve so much more. We
were always ‘RASing’ each other;

challenging ourselves and each
other to reframe the situation or
challenge we faced.
“RAS is the Reticular Activating
System; it is responsible for
how we perceive things. This was
particularly important for me
when I had to spend three nights
in the bush on my own as you
had no sense of time, no-one to
talk to, and you couldn’t move
far from your spot. So I established
a daily routine of eating,
exercise and reflection; I spent a
considerable amount of time reflecting,
and then writing letters
to those in my group, along with
one to myself which I will receive
in six-month’s time.”
Ella is both a Cycle Safe and
Surf School instructor, and hopes
to use the lessons she has learnt
from Outward Bound with her
students – especially the need
to live in the moment, and to
believe in yourself.
“Our instructors were great
mentors, and I would like to
think I could be a strong mentor
to the kids I work with.”
The Outward Bound scholarship
was sponsored by SBS
and the Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation.

McKenna said the scholarship
is strongly aligned to the bank’s
well-being focus, particularly
physical and mental well-being,
as Outward Bound helps build

Seasoned musicians, Rockquest
winners to share festival stage

TWENTY years since Australian
rockers Hoodoo Gurus last
played in New Zealand, the band
is set to headline Selwyn Sounds.
Sir Dave Dobbyn, Gin
Wigmore, Mi Sex, Stellar*, Greg
Johnson, Blam Blam Blam and
Zephyr will also grace the stage
during the one day festival at
Lincoln Domain on March 4.
Fans of Hoodoo Gurus can
look forward to hits like What’s
my Scene, Like Wow – Wipe
Out, Bittersweet and 1000 Miles
Away.
Wigmore, a United Statesbased
Kiwi, will start her New
Zealand tour at the event and
Blam Blam Blam will be the first
big name act to take the stage.
Promoter David Parlane said
the first band on stage at 11am
will up-and-coming Canterbury
group, Zephyr. The band features
members of The Jehts, which
won the Christchurch Smokefree
Rockquest and were third in the
national final.
“They’re a group of four
people, very much a classic rock
band, they’ve got three original
songs. I’ve been to a couple of
their gigs and they’re a great little
group.”
Parlane and his business
partner launched Selwyn
Sounds in 2017 after a causal
conversation over drinks.
“Actually it was my business
partner [Craig Bradford] idea.
He said: ‘Why do we have to go
into Christchurch to see music?’
He then prompted me to do
something about six months
after that.”
Thirty-five vendors will also be
on site, selling everything from
pizza and Indian food to coffee,
ice cream and more.
“It’s like a mini food festival,”
Parlane said.
Along with the opportunity
to see and hear a great line
up of bands, he says the event
also benefits the community,
with 200 staff employed on the

day and local organisations

“Lincoln High School students
are looking after the car park
and all the funds they gather
from people parking there go
directly back to [the] school.
We have the leadership group
from the high school helping
us with scanning people at the
gate. They’re the face of Selwyn
Sounds.
“We also have the organisaton
Red Frogs keeping an eye on
people and helping people out
if they need a drink of water or
to ‘chill out’ somewhere. The
Lincoln Lizards rugby team
is running one of the bars,
and that it part of their major
fundraising,” Parlane said.
He said the event promotes
the district in New Zealand and
Australia with Hoodoo Gurus
on the bill. Due to the Covid
restrictions, Selwyn Sounds was
cancelled a month before it was
to take place last year.
“It was devastating for
everybody – artists, crew the
whole industry really,” Parlane
said.
He said the festival was “not a
cheap exercise”, costing “millions
of dollars” to put on.
Tickets are still available.

different year in terms of ticket
sales, purely with what we’ve
been through with cancellations,
etc.
“People have been holding off
a little bit, but we are certainly
starting to see a significant lift
over the last seven days, and
we are looking pretty good for
another sell out event,” Parlane
said.
