Taylors in top form
• By Jaime Cunningham
TAYLORS MISTAKE stood
out at the Canterbury surf
lifesaving championships over
the weekend, despite intense
heat and a shark sighting at
Waimairi Beach.
Taylor Chamberlain (main
photo) took out the top title
in the men’s open ski, board,
and surf race, as well as placing
second in the open two-person
board relay with Joe Hall. He
was also part of the open relay
team that placed third.
Lucy Stroud won the
women’s open ski, surf and
board races. Agatha Weston
(inset) was winner of the
under-19 surf race, and second
in the board race. Stroud and
Weston also won the open
two-person board relay
together, along with placing
second in the club’s open relay
team.
Taylors Mistake finished
second overall in the club
points table with 40 wins,
although half the event’s
programme was postponed
due to a shark sighting on
Saturday.
South Brighton topped the
table with an impressive 114
points and 67 wins, while
Sumner was third with 17.
The event’s canoe racing
programme has been
rescheduled to February 24,
while the remainder of the
competition will take place on
March 5.
SIGNIFICANT capital spending
planned for Banks Peninsula has
fallen victim to the city council’s
mission to keep the rates increase
below 5.6 per cent.
The city council proposes
removing nearly $13.4m from
the Banks Peninsula capital plan
for 2024 and nearly $10.8m from
following year, in a move that Te
Pataka o Rakaihautu Banks Peninsula
Community Board appears
to accept as inevitable.
A city council spokesperson has
reiterated that “no changes are
proposed to the council’s levels of
service”, but figures supplied to
Bay Harbour News show at least
eight peninsula projects are affected,
including the Head to Head
Walkway and the Barry’s Bay site
redevelopment.
The Head to Head Walkway is
a project former Banks Peninsula
councillor and Rod Donald Banks
Peninsula Trust manager Andrew
Turner has been pushing to get
completed quickly.
SuperValue owner fends off
egg poaching cruise ship crew
• By Tony Simons
LYTTELTON SuperValue is
facing pressure from cruise
ship crew members desperate to
buy eggs.
It comes after more than 20
crew from a cruise ship berthed
at Port Chalmers in Dunedin
last week queued to buy eggs at
the local Four Square.
They would have cleaned out
the shop’s entire egg supply if
staff had not stopped them.
Lyttelton Supervalue
owner Rob De Thier said the
supermarket has also been
approached by cruise ship
operators wanting eggs.
Rob
De Thier
“I am able to
help with one
dozen, just like
everyone else
gets,” said De
Thier.
“I have to
look after the
customers who
shop with us
regularly.”
A nationwide shortage of
eggs has impacted supermarkets
across New Zealand, leading to
rationing and bare shelves.
De Thier said he ordered
more than 450 dozen eggs
last week – but received
just 72.
“They were gone in less than
two days,” he said.
“We are in dire straits at the
moment.”
De Thier said he knows of one
supermarket owner who offered
to drive six hours to pick up
some eggs from a South Island
supplier, only to be told: “You
can drive here if you like, but we
can’t give you any eggs.”
Lyttelton-based company
Independent Provedoring
supplies eggs to cruise ships and
fishing trawlers at the port but
only in very limited quantities
because of the shortage.
Said company managing
director Winsome Dormer: “I
“We are getting around the
problem to some extent by
supplying dried and frozen
egg product imported from
Europe,” she said.
The lack of eggs is due to a
shortage of laying hens after a
new code of welfare system was
introduced.
It caused the price of eggs to
increase by about 16 per cent
compared to a year ago.
On Tuesday, the cost dozen
eggs ranged from $6.40 to $8.99
on the Lyttelton Supervalue
website.
Three-week
closure to
cool library
THE LYTTELTON Library and
Service Centre will close for three
weeks from February 20 so a new
heating system can be put in.
City council head of libraries
Carolyn Robertson said the old
boiler will be replaced with a
modern air conditioning system
that will provide cost-efficient
heating and cooling.
“And make everyone’s visits
to Lyttelton Library much more
comfortable,” Robertson said.
“The current boiler needs to
be restarted three or four times
a week, especially during winter,
which makes heating the building
far more costly than it needs to be.”
Work to decommission the
boiler and remove the chimney
will start on Monday, but won’t
impact visitors until the following
week’s closure. The library will
reopen on March 13.
“We won’t offer a temporary
library service in this case due
to the relatively short period of
closure, but our mobile library will
be visiting a couple of times each
week,” said Robertson.
The library’s free wi-fi will
continue to operate. The closest
libraries to use during the closure
are Matuku Takotako: Sumner
Centre, South Library and
Head to Head Walkway project affected
• From page 1
Andrew
Turner
Reuben
Davidson
Turner was
not available
for comment
yesterday,
but told Bay
Harbour News
last month it
had been an
aspirational
project for more
than 10 years.
“It is time to
see some real progress and a plan
for completion finalised within
the term of the current council,”
he said.
Community
board chair
Reuben Davidson
said he is
against deferring
spending
for the walkway
“as I see this as
an important
project that will
connect our
communities”.
For the remaining projects,
he said: “I think it’s a matter of
being realistic about when the
work will actually happen rather
than just getting it in on budget
as soon as possible.”
The impact of the plan changes
will, in many cases, be to place
the spending burden on future
councils to deal with, along with
any cost escalations.
SPENDING: The Head to Head Walkway is among the projects affected by the city council’s
proposed capital plan cuts, as is the Akaroa L’Aube Hill reservoir. PHOTOS: NEWSLINE
“Cost escalation is a potential
side effect, but given the
rationale for the adjustments,
there isn’t really any alternative,”
Davidson said.
To illustrate the impact of the
spending plan changes, while the
city council plans to cut $13.4m
in 2024, spending on Banks
Peninsula projects will increase
substantially in 2028 and 2029.
In 2028 an additional $9m is
budgeted and in 2029 an extra
$15m.
“I personally remain more
committed than ever to pushing
for the infrastructure and
spending support needed across
Banks Peninsula to improve
the environment and support
our communities,” said
Davidson.
The community board will
have the opportunity to make
it’s own submission on the plan
when it goes out for consultation
on March 10, and in the hearings
that will follow.
While much of the events industry was shut
pandemic the Sea2Sky Challenge managed
to navigate through the guidelines better
than most holding events in late 2020 along
March 12th for the eighth edition without
the restrictions of the last few years. With
individual and team triathlon, duathlon and
trail run options for juniors (5 years and up)
through to Masters of 80+ years there is
something for everyone. “In the last few years
we’ve had to split the event into groups of
100, tell spectators to stay away, mask up
along with other measures. It’s going to be
awesome to welcome everyone back this
year to finish the kiwi summer in style” says
In every city it visits, SailGP
teams up with a local community
purpose project as part of the
league’s host city climate
action charter.
The project is supported
by significant volunteer
efforts. So far, 11,262 native
with a further 16,000 plants
John
Kottier
to be put into the ground
before the programme ends
in June next year.
Programme manager
John Kottier said the work is
guided by principles of collaboration,
connection and mātauranga
Māori.
“This is all about mātauranga
– the Māori world view.
If we don’t fix the whenua
(the land) then we won’t
fix the ocean. There is a lot
of things going on in the
harbour. On a wonderful
day it looks pristine, but
it’s carnage going on
under the water. Siltation,
invasive species, all of those
things,” he said.
In Te Ao Māori, ‘Ki Uta Ki Tai’
refers to the journey of wai as
it falls from the sky, flows over
the land, and makes its way out
to sea. Ki Uta Ki Tai describes a
Māori understanding of sustainable
land management, where
each part of the ecosystem has
a relationship to the other, and
nothing can be separated.
“This idea of complete
interconnectivity between
natural resources is what
motivates us both in the field
and when planning for future
restoration efforts in the
harbour,” said Kottier.
“We’re lucky here in Whakaraupō,
our purpose is never
far from sight. When working
on the whenua there’s a view
straight out to the moana and
vice versa, a constant reminder
that what restoration we do on
the land has a direct impact on
the sustainability of the water.”
The SailGP funding is for
a water storage facility and
to partially fund wetland
construction on the stream.
The wetland will capture
sediment to prevent discharge
to the sea and provide habitat
for a wide range of species.
8 Rules of Love
How to Find it, Keep it, and Let it Go
by Jay Shetty
The author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Think Like a Monk offers a revelatory
guide to every stage of romance, drawing on ancient wisdom and new science.
Nobody sits us down and teaches us how to love. So we’re often thrown into
relationships with nothing but romance movies and pop culture to help us muddle
through. Until now. Instead of presenting love as an ethereal concept or a collection of
cliches, Jay Shetty lays out specific, actionable steps to help you develop the skills to
practice and nurture love better than ever before. He shares insights on how to win or
lose together, how to define love, and why you don’t break in a break-up. Inspired by
Vedic wisdom and modern science, he tackles the entire relationship cycle, from first
dates to moving in together to breaking up and starting over. And he shows us how to
avoid falling for false promises and unfulfilling partners.
By living Jay Shetty’s eight rules, we can all love ourselves, our partner, and the world
better than we ever thought possible.
Spare
By Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two
princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow - and
horror. As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes
must be thinking and feeling - and how their lives would play out from that point on. For
Harry, this is that story at last. With its raw, unflinching honesty, Spare is a landmark
publication full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about
the eternal power of love over grief. Prince Harry wishes to support British charities with
donations from his proceeds from Spare. The Duke of Sussex has donated $1,500,000
to Sentebale, an organisation he founded with Prince Seeiso in their mothers’ legacies,
which supports vulnerable children and young people in Lesotho and Botswana affected
by HIV/AIDS. Prince Harry will also donate to the non-profit organisation WellChild in the
amount of £300,000. WellChild, which he has been Royal patron of for fifteen years,
makes it possible for children and young people with complex health needs to be cared
for at home instead of hospital, wherever possible.
Bryce Courtenay: Storyteller
By Christine Courtenay
The long-awaited memoir of the late Bryce Courtenay – Australia’s bestselling author – as
told by his wife, Christine Courtenay. Bryce Courtenay was a born storyteller. The success
of his extraordinary debut The Power of One made publishing history, and in the years
that followed Bryce continued to entertain and inspire thousands of devoted readers
around the world with his sweeping epics and larger-than-life characters who embody
the strength and triumph of the human condition. What kind of man did it take to conjure
these tales? What kind of life? When Christine Courtenay began penning her own memoir
during lockdown, she found herself increasingly drawn to the remarkable story of her
late husband’s life and reflecting upon his astonishing literary legacy. From his humble
beginnings in Africa to his dazzling success in advertising and as a bestselling author,
Bryce’s extraordinary, rags-to-riches life story reads like one of his epic novels. It was a
life marked by all the big themes – overcoming adversity, love, loss, hard-won success,
fame and fortune, and holding tight to a dream. Storyteller is a fascinating, loving tribute
to the life and work of Australia’s most beloved and enigmatic writer.
The Book of Feeling Blue
Understand & manage depression
by Gwendoline Smith
How do you know if you’re just feeling a bit sad or if you are depressed? What level
of sadness is ‘normal’? How do you work out what’s going on when you feel down?
What kinds of treatment are available? How do you help a family member or friend
who is depressed? Psychologist Gwendoline Smith answers these questions and
many more. She specifically explains post-natal blues and depression; depression in
children, teens and older people; depression in relation to gender and sexuality; and
Covid blues. Her knowledge is based on much research, and both clinical and personal
experience of depression. She covers the full range of treatment options, from psychiatry
through to natural therapies. With her characteristic humorous approach, examples and
anecdotes, Gwendoline offers powerful strategies for addressing these issues. Based
on cognitive behavioural therapy, The Book of Feeling Blue will help you understand
depression and learn how to treat it.
Outward Bound an experience of a lifetime:
‘You have nothing to lose and much to gain’
“IF YOU are thinking of
applying for the Sumner
Ferrymead Foundation Outward
Bound scholarship, don’t think
about it, just do it!” said Ella
Lewis-Sandford.
“You have nothing to lose and
so much to gain.”
Ella won the 2022 Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation’s Outward
Bound scholarship, and has just
returned from the 21-day leadership
course.
“I have always wanted to go,
ever since I was a kid, and to
be sponsored was just the most
amazing opportunity. Because
I was fairly fit, I found it more
mentally than physically challenging.
Having said that, I did
wonder how I was going to do a
half marathon when I had just
completed a challenging threeday
tramp.”
Outward Bound puts the
aspiring leaders into groups of 14,
and it is the close bonds that form
within each group that helps get
everyone across the line. They are
also taught the skills needed to
achieve each of the tasks.
“We were taught to train the
brain to think positively, as a
positive mind set means you
can achieve so much more. We
were always ‘RASing’ each other;
AMAZING OPPORTUNITY: Sumner Ferrymead Foundation’s
Outward Bound scholarship winner Ella Lewis-Sandford has
just returned from the 21-day leadership course.
challenging ourselves and each
other to reframe the situation or
challenge we faced.
“RAS is the Reticular Activating
System; it is responsible for
how we perceive things. This was
particularly important for me
when I had to spend three nights
in the bush on my own as you
had no sense of time, no-one to
talk to, and you couldn’t move
far from your spot. So I established
a daily routine of eating,
exercise and reflection; I spent a
considerable amount of time reflecting,
and then writing letters
to those in my group, along with
one to myself which I will receive
in six-month’s time.”
Ella is both a Cycle Safe and
Surf School instructor, and hopes
to use the lessons she has learnt
from Outward Bound with her
students – especially the need
to live in the moment, and to
believe in yourself.
“Our instructors were great
mentors, and I would like to
think I could be a strong mentor
to the kids I work with.”
The Outward Bound scholarship
was sponsored by SBS
and the Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation.
SBS branch manager Brendon
McKenna said the scholarship
is strongly aligned to the bank’s
well-being focus, particularly
physical and mental well-being,
as Outward Bound helps build
Wednesday February 8 2023 Bay Harbour News
participants’ physical and mental
resilience.
“Because of the strong alignment
and our commitment to
the community, we were delighted
to sponsor the scholarship
again,” he said.
Said trustee for the foundation
John Christensen: “The Sumner
Ferrymead Foundation scholarships
and awards programme
offers academic scholarships for
second year university students,
apprentice awards for new apprentices,
Outward Bound scholarships
for both the leadership
and adapted programmes, and
an environmental award.
“This year we have a number
of new sponsors, including local
businesses; this is particularly
rewarding as we are all about
locals helping locals,” he said.
• Application forms for
the various scholarships
and awards can be found
on the Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation website; the
closing date this year is
Seasoned musicians, Rockquest
winners to share festival stage
• By Darryl Baser
TWENTY years since Australian
rockers Hoodoo Gurus last
played in New Zealand, the band
is set to headline Selwyn Sounds.
Sir Dave Dobbyn, Gin
Wigmore, Mi Sex, Stellar*, Greg
Johnson, Blam Blam Blam and
Zephyr will also grace the stage
during the one day festival at
Lincoln Domain on March 4.
Fans of Hoodoo Gurus can
look forward to hits like What’s
my Scene, Like Wow – Wipe
Out, Bittersweet and 1000 Miles
Away.
Wigmore, a United Statesbased
Kiwi, will start her New
Zealand tour at the event and
Blam Blam Blam will be the first
big name act to take the stage.
Promoter David Parlane said
the first band on stage at 11am
will up-and-coming Canterbury
group, Zephyr. The band features
members of The Jehts, which
won the Christchurch Smokefree
Rockquest and were third in the
national final.
“They’re a group of four
people, very much a classic rock
band, they’ve got three original
songs. I’ve been to a couple of
their gigs and they’re a great little
group.”
Parlane and his business
partner launched Selwyn
Sounds in 2017 after a causal
conversation over drinks.
“Actually it was my business
partner [Craig Bradford] idea.
He said: ‘Why do we have to go
into Christchurch to see music?’
He then prompted me to do
something about six months
after that.”
Thirty-five vendors will also be
on site, selling everything from
pizza and Indian food to coffee,
ice cream and more.
“It’s like a mini food festival,”
Parlane said.
Along with the opportunity
to see and hear a great line
up of bands, he says the event
also benefits the community,
with 200 staff employed on the
day and local organisations
supporting the event.
“Lincoln High School students
are looking after the car park
and all the funds they gather
from people parking there go
directly back to [the] school.
We have the leadership group
from the high school helping
us with scanning people at the
gate. They’re the face of Selwyn
Sounds.
“We also have the organisaton
Red Frogs keeping an eye on
people and helping people out
if they need a drink of water or
to ‘chill out’ somewhere. The
Lincoln Lizards rugby team
is running one of the bars,
and that it part of their major
fundraising,” Parlane said.
He said the event promotes
the district in New Zealand and
Australia with Hoodoo Gurus
on the bill. Due to the Covid
restrictions, Selwyn Sounds was
cancelled a month before it was
to take place last year.
“It was devastating for
everybody – artists, crew the
whole industry really,” Parlane
said.
He said the festival was “not a
cheap exercise”, costing “millions
of dollars” to put on.
Tickets are still available.
HIGHLIGHTS: The Hoodoo
Gurus (above left) will
headline Selwyn Sounds,
while Reuben Anderson,
and Mya Cawood from
(above) will open the
festival.
FERGUSON, JOE PERRI
“It’s been an extremely
different year in terms of ticket
sales, purely with what we’ve
been through with cancellations,
etc.
“People have been holding off
a little bit, but we are certainly
starting to see a significant lift
over the last seven days, and
we are looking pretty good for
another sell out event,” Parlane
said.
•The gates at Lincoln
Domain, off Meijer Drive,
open at 10am and the
festival is due to finish at
8.30pm.
ADVERTISING FEATURE
Sheltered by the embrace of the Port Hills and
with panoramic views of the ever-changing
harbour out to the distant Pacific, this fivebedroom,
three-bathroom architectural
residence is a stunning prospect in a phenomenal
location.
Constructed of timeless cedar and concrete
block, this home sits into the hillside and
maximises the inherent privacy of hillside
living. Sleek timber joinery, quality appliances,
a generous breakfast bar, and a butler's pantry
with an additional dishwasher are the hallmarks
of a well-designed kitchen. Situated to the rear
of the pavilion, entertaining is made easy by
the easy access to the sheltered rear patio and
barbecue area. A formal dining area sits
slightly elevated, while the living room
embraces indoor-outdoor flow through
sliding doors and is bathed in natural light.
Accommodation is expansive, with three
double bedrooms on the main floor, a family
bathroom, separate laundry, and an additional
media room. The intelligent design sees a
self-contained apartment on the lower floor,
while the top floor is reserved for an elegantly
luxurious main bedroom with walk in robe,
and stunning ensuite.
No element has been left to chance and this
property presents triple car garaging,
hydronic in-slab heating, a bioethanol
fireplace, two heat pumps, and newly installed
solar power generation.
Elevated above Governors Bay, this 1680m2
(approx) section offers unparalleled living.
Currently in zone for both Governors Bay
Primary and popular Cashmere High.
Opportunities like this just don't come along
very often.
