championships over the
weekend.
• By Jaime Cunningham
SOUTH BRIGHTON have the
upper hand in the Canterbury
surf life saving championships,
which had to be postponed halfway
through at the weekend due to a
shark sighting.
The club was leading and 114
points ahead of Taylors Mistake
(77), and Sumner (25) when the
shark forced everyone from the
water at Waimairi beach.
The competition will resume on
February 24 with the canoe racing
programme, while the remaining
events will take place on March 5.
Skye Trist was a standout for
South Brighton in the under-17 age
group, winning the ski, surf, and
board races. She also participated
in the beach sprints and two relay
teams.
Dylan Monk was impressive
in the ski events, winning the
under-17 ski race, and finishing
second in the under-19 event. He
was also third in the under-17
board race.
South Brighton saw plenty of
success in the under-15 age group,
with Eden Sheppard winning the
girls’ surf and board races, while
Tyler Lodge won the boys’ surf race,
was second in the board race, and
third in the beach sprints. He was
also part of the winning under-17
relay team.
South Brighton impressed during
the relay events, winning five of
six races in the hot conditions. The
club also dominated the open beach
sprints, making up the top three in
both the women and men’s events.
Host Waimairi currently sit
fifth on eight points, with North
Beach one point behind after Izzy
McCone’s win in the under-15
beach sprints. New Brighton are
ninth on just one point.
Beach flags, board rescue,
taplin and board relays, and other
events will be contested when the
competition continues on March 5.
Growing the urban forest
A FUTURE focused plan
outlining how Christchurch can
grow its urban forest has been
released for public feedback.
The Ōtautahi-Christchurch
Draft Urban Forest Plan 2023
sets out how to grow the tree
canopy and sustain a thriving
urban forest with healthy,
diverse and resilient trees located
on both public and private land.
The latest survey results
show had the city’s tree canopy
had reduced from 15% to 13%
between 2015-2019.
City council head of parks
Andrew Rutledge: “Our current
Andrew
Rutledge
urban forest
is not spread
across our
communities
equally, with
some suburbs
having more
trees than
others. We want
to prioritise
neighbourhoods
which are lacking trees to ensure
equitable tree coverage for all
communities.
“We want to grow our urban
forest as quickly and sustainably
as possible. Currently we plant
approximately 400 trees in our
parks per year of which 50 per
cent are new and 50 per cent are
replacing trees we have removed.
“This coming planting season
we’ll be planting about 2500
additional trees. This number
will steadily increase over
coming years towards a goal of
8000 trees per year. As part of
this we’ll be looking at how we
can balance the needs of our
community, when using our
parks, with prioritising growing
our urban forest.”
Actions to protect trees on
private land have also been
identified in the plan.
“There is currently limited
mechanisms to protect trees
on private land. Growing and
nurturing our urban forest will
require continued support from
a mix of sources, including
developers, property and
business owners,” said Rutledge.
“As a council we’ll also be
investigating ways we can
incentivise and support private
land owners to retain and plant
more trees”.
Feedback on the plan ends on
March 6. Go to the city council
website for more details.
Sister city
group visits
from Seattle
REPRESENTATIVES from
Christchurch’s sister city, Seattle,
have been welcomed by the mayor.
The relationship between the
two city’s stretches back 42 years
but it has been 11 years since an
official group last visited from
Seattle.
The city on the west coast of the
United States in Washington has a
population of about 740,000. The
14-strong contingent was formally
welcomed by Mayor Phil Mauger
during the city council meeting.
The last sister city visit from
Seattle was in 2012 after the
Christchurch earthquakes. The
people of Seattle donated an
ambulance to St John to help with
the city’s recovery.
The group includes members of
the Seattle City Council and the
Seattle-Christchurch Sister City
Association. For the first time a
First Nations tribal representative
is also visiting on behalf of a tribal
group from the Seattle area.
A member of the group, Seattle
councillor Sara Nelson, has a
special connection to the city.
She spent her honeymoon here
in 2002, and says the two cities
have a lot in common. “We both
live on subduction zones and the
city of Seattle benefitted greatly
from the learnings following
your earthquakes and how you’ve
rebuilt your city and become more
resilient from it,” Nelson said.
When is the best
time to sell?
I've met lots of homeowners who have used
the holiday period to ponder their options
for selling. A question I frequently get asked
is: "When is the best time to sell?
Selling a house is a big decision and timing
is a big factor in your ultimate result. If
you're planning to make a move in 2023,
here's a few points to consider:
Get ahead of the curve
Peak listing months are March to April and
November to December, so it pays to get
your home on the market ahead of these
busy listing months. When buyers have
more choice, they take longer to make a
decision and feel they can negotiate harder.
Selling ahead of the listing peak also puts
you in a cash position to take advantage of
the influx of new listings.
Don't rule out selling in winter
Many owners hold of from marketing during
winter. But it can work in your favour due to
the simple rules of supply and demand. If
your home is warm and well-presented, you
can still secure a great result. Just make
sure to create a cozy atmosphere.
Avoid long weekends
Your first weekend of open homes can be
Caleb Griffioen
caleb.harcourts.co.nz
make-or-break, so it pays to avoid listing
your home heading into a long weekend, when
people are likely to head out of town.
Think about the upcoming election
With election day set for 14 October, a number
of buyers will sit on the sidelines (or the
backbenches) until they know who forms the
next government. This will be a particularly
important factor for investment properties.
Think about the upcoming election
Most importantly, the best time to sell your
house is when it works for you and your family.
If you're ready to move on, don't wait for the
perfect moment.
Timing is key in selling your home, just like in
cooking a meal. Plan and prepare, and you'll
be able to sell your home quickly.
The right time is when it works for you
It's ok to put your own needs first. Ultimately,
the best time to sell is when you are ready to
make the move. So if you've just spent months
de-cluttering, gardening and sprucing up your
home - now's probably the best time!
Considering a move?
It's my job to help people make informed
decisions for the future. I'm just a call or text
message away!
Big crowd discover
Thousands of people descended on Thomson Park for the Love Brighton
festival on Waitangi Day. The water activities and ice cream stalls were
popular as the temperature soared past 30 deg C. But plenty of other
activities kept the crowd entertained. The highlights included a strong
Kapa Haka performance from Rawhiti School pupils and performances
from the Takumi Japanese Drumming Group, Shirley Boys’ High band
Midnight Buzz, and Brighton’s own Natural Magic Ukulele Band. Community
groups and clubs – including Coastal Spirit Football Club, Christchurch Circus
Trust and Maunga Ātaahua Mountain Boarding – took the chance to showcase
their offerings and recruit new members. All activities at the 12th Love
Brighton were free and aimed to build community spirit, engagement and
participation. •Kite Day, page 6
