Rodeo and welding
Eastland Career Center welding students Allie
Beerman and Arly Kisner are not just breaking the
mold in their school’s welding lab, but also in their
shared hobby. The two met through the rodeo circuit
in elementary school and both rode in the
National High School Finals Rodeo in Gillette,
Wyo., last summer. Beerman is a senior at
Hamilton Township Schools while Kisner is a junior
at Teays Valley Schools. They attend the
Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools’
welding program at Eastland Career Center in
Groveport. “I like to design and create new
things,” Kisner said. They have learned important
life lessons in rodeo that they are applying in the
welding program and when planning for their
futures. “A lesson that I’ve learned from rodeo is
that hard work and determination beat talent
every time,” said Beerman. “I’ve learned to do
whatever it takes to achieve my goals and I will
continue that mentality moving forward.” Kisner
said she’s learned that “you have to work for what
you want, not wish for it.” Beerman recently
applied to join the Union Local 189 for plumbers
and pipefitters. Kisner plans to pursue a bachelor’s
degree in architecture while continuing to
use her welding skills for summer work, including
assisting with her dad’s business. She’s eyeing
colleges that have a rodeo program in hopes that
this can remain a part of her life.
CW looks to upgrade pedestrian safety in its downtown
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
Pedestrian safety issues could result in
changes to Canal Winchester’s downtown
streetscape.
Public Service Director Matt Peoples reported
on potential safety changes to a downtown intersection
and pedestrian crossing during Canal
Winchester City Council’s Feb. 6 meeting.
“As part of the design for the 2023 street program,
we started talking about the downtown
streetscape,” Peoples said. “It really started with
some pedestrian safety issues a couple of years
ago. Residents came in with some concerns.”
According to Peoples, in addition to a lack of
clear direction regarding crossings at the intersection
of High and Waterloo streets and trees heaving
up tiles near CornerSmiths, bricks at the bottom of
the steps at 10 N. High St. are deteriorating.
Peoples said there are no true crosswalks, just
a large depressed curb which he said is inconducive
to direct pedestrian routes. The work dates
from a 1992 renovation of the area. The same type
of concerns were studied where pedestrians cross
from Shades to the other side of South High
Street.
“Everyone uses the existing brickwork as a
crosswalk,” said Peoples. “We thought it would be
a very good idea to put a (designated) crosswalk
there.”
Design suggestions also included a gateway arch in
the area, like the ones in Stradley Park.
“We were planning for this to possibly be thrown
into the street program,” said Peoples. “The total price,
not including the archway, is about $750,000. That’s
not something we really have budgeted. We do want to
address pedestrian safety down there, but we need
much bigger improvements from what we have now.”
The budget for the annual street program is approximately
$1 million. The cost for the intersection
improvement is projected at $500,000 and another
$250,000 for the street crossing near Shades.
“Hopefully, we can get this in next year’s budget,”
Peoples said. “That will be our project for that. This is
part of our vision. Downtown defines Canal
Daycare project in Obetz progressing
By Katelyn Sattler
Staff Writer
Fountain of Knowledge Academy is looking at putting
in a new daycare at the southwest corner of
Groveport and Bixby roads.
Founding Partner and Principal Architect of
SHYFT, Steve Reynolds, came to a recent city of Obetz
Planning and Zoning Commission meeting to present
the changes to the proposed day care.
The approximately 9,300 square foot daycare facility
would have a capacity of up to 170 children. A
secure checkpoint for parents dropping off their children
is at the west end of the building.
Reynolds said they are going to be bringing in colored
glass and try to provide a whimsical look. The
building is intended to be more plain in some areas to
Dr. Bender Scholarship
Canal Winchester City Council announced two
$1,000 scholarships will be awarded in honor of the late
Dr. John Bender, a former council member for 17 years.
Graduating seniors can review eligibility requirements
and submit applications online at www.canalwinchesterohio.gov.
Applications are also available in the guidance
offices at Canal Winchester High School and Bloom-
Carroll High School. Completed applications and
materials are due by 4:30 p.m. on March 31.
Recipients of the Dr. John Bender scholarship will be
the shadows, and the building and how that plays into
the different visuals.
“Our intent is the building will look different at 9
a.m. than it does at 3 p.m. and than it does at night
and that’s intentional,” said Reynolds.
The retention pond for stormwater runoff was
moved to the west. It now sits between the proposed
day care and the right-in-right-out drive along
Groveport Road. The retention pond now has an eight
foot safety ridge around the perimeter. The retention
pond will be four feet deep.
Mayor Angela Kirk asked to see an actual sample of
the building material next time.
The commission members liked what they saw and
Reynolds could start the process of moving forward.
Helping the food pantry
Madison Christian School recently donated 420
canned food items to the Obetz Food Pantry.
did have an alternative to add the doors and enclose
the structure completely to create the three season
shelter we were intending previously. That’s an additional
$75,000.”
The total for the contract with Ferguson
Construction Company, including alternatives and a
$3,600 savings in insulation, is $848,697. The contract
was unanimously approved by council. The structure
will be located next to the farmhouse in the park away
from the ballfields.
When asked about the construction timeline, Sims
said, “It’s a six-month duration. Obviously, there’s
some significant material acquisition early on. The
hope is we would be complete by the first of September.
My goal is to be able to have it for use this fall.”
•Council approved amending a city ordinance pertaining
to publication of notices in newspapers.
Finance Director Amanda Jackson said the city’s publication
deadline versus newspaper deadlines can be a
struggle. Notifications for items such as public hearing
variances and items appearing before planning and
zoning will now appear on the city’s website.
Dinner theatre at its best
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
A musical tradition started
more than 30 years ago is still
going strong under the leadership
of Canal Winchester High
School teacher and director
Todd Phillips, who is retiring at
the end of this school year.
Phillips is stepping down
from daily classroom duties this
summer, but the originator of
the district’s annual madrigal
dinner theatre production–
which takes place this year in
the Canal Winchester High
School cafetorium, 300
Washington St., on Feb. 18 and
19–still plans to help out with
after-school theatre activities
after he retires.
For now, he has one more
production to bring to the stage
and a memory full of past performances.
“Our first show was in Feb.
1990,” said Phillips. “We started
the productions for two main
reasons: first, there was nothing
going on at that time of year
and second, we were only doing
one theater production per year.
We didn’t have enough experience
to start doing full musicals.
I thought this would be a nice
bridge into musical theater. Little did I
realize that it would turn into a threedecade
plus tradition.”
According to Phillips, madrigal dinners
are a popular style of dinner concerts for
many choral programs. However, Canal
Winchester has taken the theatrical form
in a direction unlike many others.
While period dinner concert performances,
interactive theater and
Shakespeare productions are available in
many communities, Phillips, along with
student actors and his production team,
decided to marry the three popular aspects
into one complete production.
Over the years, Phillips penned and
rotated a dozen adaptions of various
Shakespearean plays for the madrigal format.
This year’s production is “Two
Gentleman of Verona”–one of
Shakespeare’s earliest works.
“I wanted a new challenge,” said
Phillips. “The other shows I have done two
or three times. The first couple of years we
did not do a Shakespeare play. The initial
introduction of Shakespeare plays was a
bit of a shock to our students. Once they
realized how great these stories are, they
realized they can actually do them.”
As the years moved on, the number of
students and their dedication to the quality
of work grew. Phillips now has two to
three times more students auditioning
than parts available.
Audience involvement is a major selling
point for the annual production. However,
included in the mix–and from the very
department will present Shakespeare’s “Two
madrigal. Tickets are on sale—and sell out quickly—
for the Feb. 18, 7 p.m., and Feb. 19, 2 p.m. performances
(left) and Mariah Fox (right) at rehearsal.
beginning–are select audience members
who become active participants in the production,
such as administrators, teachers
and community leaders.
“They make the best participants,” said
Phillips.
Creativity is a hallmark of theatre and
two years ago, due to Covid restrictions,
Phillips was forced to dig deep to come up
with a way to still bring Shakespeare to a
community when staging a dinner theatre
was out of the question.
“The students and I really wanted to do
the play and music for our families,” said
Phillips. “We rehearsed and videotaped
“Twelfth Night” and the music and then
produced a ‘Madrigal (No) Dinner’ movie,
which is available on YouTube.”
Former students often return years after
graduation to enjoy the madrigal from the
other side of the stage. Parents and friends
who longer have children in school still
attend the productions or volunteer their
time to help out behind the scenes.
The “Two Gentlemen of Verona” madrigal
involves approximately 100 student
actors and crew members. The pair of performances
include vocal soloists and
ensembles, guitar ensemble, Renaissance
recorder consort, English country dancers,
and a full five-course catered meal.
Tickets are on sale–and sell out quickly–for
the Feb. 18, 7 p.m., and Feb. 19, 2
p.m. performances and are $18, which
meal. For information or tickets, email
“80 for Brady” enjoyable and touching
I do not often experience a conflict of the
heart when it comes to choosing which
movie to review for my column, but making
a decision as to whether I wanted to give
my time and my dwindling coffers to “80
for Brady” had me well and truly torn.
Editor’s Notebook
Dedra
Cordle
I did have an interest
in this film because
it stars four legendary
actors: Sally Field,
Jane Fonda, Rita
Moreno, and Lily
Tomlin. But I also did
not have an interest in
this film because it
also stars Tom Brady
— one of the most legendary
NFL quarterbacks
who recently
retired for the second time and whose presence
looms over this film as much as his
specter will throughout the sport for all of
eternity.
Unlike most football fans whose loyalties
do not lay with the New England
Patriots (or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, or
whatever team on the west coast team that
may entice him to come out of retirement
later this spring), I have never been a
Brady-hater, but man has he been grating
for the past couple years. First there was
the acceptance of the pandemic-relief funds
for his multi-million dollar health and
wellness business, then there was the
drawn out first retirement that had him
basking in thousands of puff pieces for
months and then taking it all back, then
there were the bratty sideline antics when
things were not going his way for once, and
then there was the non-fungible token
scandal, and now I am just about tired of
seeing him and hearing about him. If you
add all that up, and then throw in the fact
that he is a producer on this film and gets
a percentage of the box office profit, it
makes you not want to be involved in anything
he is involved in, right?
Columbus Metropolitan Library partnered with BalletMet and
the Columbus Symphony to make a select number of passes available
for library customers to check out for free.
One BalletMet Culture Pass will be available at each of CML’s
23 locations beginning two weeks before each performance during
the 2022-23 season. Each pass is valid for up to two people (children
or adults). Ten Columbus Symphony Culture Passes will be
available at each library location beginning two weeks before each
performance during the 2022-23 season. Each pass is valid for one
adult (children under 16 are free). Passes are valid for
Masterworks performances only.
The Culture Pass program enables library customers to borrow
passes just as they would a book: using their library card. This
one-time pass, which must be checked out in person, grants customers
limited free access to institutions that would otherwise
charge admission fees. For information, visit
columbuslibrary.org/culture-pass.
After much internal debate between
this film and M. Night Shyamalan’s
dystopian adaptation, “Knock at the
Cabin,” I decided to stick with a vow I
made to support novels, movies, and television
shows that are women-led, womencentered,
and showcase people of a certain
age living active and full lives. That even
includes women’s lives that partially
revolve around finding inspiration from a
famous athlete named Tom Brady.
“80 for Brady” is an infectiously joyous
film. It has moments that will make you
cringe or even give you a headache because
of how saccharine it can be, but it is also an
engaging and lighthearted story about four
friends who take comfort in sport and in
each other. Thanks in large part to the
chemistry between the main cast, “80 for
Brady” has a charm that shines through
despite being centered around someone
who seems so devoid of it at times.
Loosely inspired by a true story, “80 for
Brady” follows longtime best friends Betty
(Field), Trish (Fonda), Maura (Moreno)
and Lou (Lily Tomlin) whose love for Tom
Brady and the New England Patriots
knows no bounds. Despite having lived on
the east coast for most of their lives, the
quartet had little interest in football before
Tom Brady came onto the scene. In fact,
they really didn’t want to watch that fateful
game between the Pats and the New
York Jets but had to because Lou’s television
would not change the channel. When a
young Tom Brady came in for an injured
Drew Bledsoe, the friends were smitten by
his good looks and calm demeanor in the
pocket. Instant fans were made that day,
and watching him play throughout the
years helped Lou through her cancer treatments,
took Maura’s mind off the loss of
her husband, gave Betty a release from her
demanding husband, and allowed Trish to
find a second career writing Rob
Gronkowski erotica. (Seriously.)
Despite their team making several
appearances at the Super Bowl, the friends
had never attended one of the big games
(probably because they cost more than a
down payment on a new home) but decide
www.columbusmessenger.com
to enter a contest through a local radio station
that would send them down to
Houston to see the 2017 matchup with the
Atlanta Falcons. Having little confidence
that their story of finding perseverance
through watching Tom Brady and the team
would win them the ultimate prize, they
try to put it out of their minds and hearts.
But then Lou makes the announcement
that they did snag the ultimate prize and
they would soon be embarking on a journey
towards “the best day of their lives.”
Naturally, things do not always do as
planned, especially in a comedy that features
Fonda and Tomlin together with all
of their chaotic energy.
Written by “Booksmart” scribes Emily
Halpern and Sarah Haskins, the script is a
nod to the fact that there is no age limit
when it comes to having fun. Not only do
the characters have a good time as they get
involved in various shenanigans during
their Super Bowl experience, but it seems
as if the primary and secondary actors are
having a good time, too. Watching all of
this together makes the action all the more
engaging to the audience too, despite how
outlandish some of the scenes may get.
Even with the more farcical elements
within this story, everything that happens
in this film is well-intentioned and
designed to garner laughs. Despite the
overall lighthearted tone of the film, there
are moments in which the story concentrates
of real-life issues related to cancer,
death, and love — all of which we can relate
to.
As a credit to the writers and director
Kyle Marvin, all of the transitions between
the silly and the serious feel natural to the
development of the story and, as a result,
makes “80 for Brady” as enjoyable as it is
touching — even with all of the mentions
and cameo appearances of a certain newly
retired quarterback.
at the specific CML locations listed above. Culture passes cannot
be reserved like traditional library items. However, customers
can check their availability at columbuslibrary.org by typing
“Culture Pass” into the catalog search bar.
Each participating organization offers their passes to CML and
its customers for free. CML does not purchase passes as it does
with traditional library materials. Each organization sets its own
Certain bands only strike gold once
with songs that become “one hit wonders,”
but that singularity does not diminish the
music.
The Groveport Madison Area
Community Choir is celebrating one hit
wonders with its upcoming show, “One
Hit Wonders: A Musical Variety Show,” to
be held in the Groveport Madison High
School auditorium 4475 S. Hamilton
Road, on Feb. 25. Show times are 1 p.m.
and 7 p.m.
“There are so many ‘One Hit Wonders’
(songs performed or written by artists
that only ever had one top 40 hit) that it
seemed like a good choice for a great selection
of music,” said Groveport Madison
Area Community Choir Director Terri
Christensen.
Christensen said one of the highlights
of this year’s show is a solo/video tribute
from Lori Motts-Byrd honoring Vietnam
Helicopter pilots with the song. “Spirit in
the Sky.”
“The segment is introduced by choir
member Ron White, who was a pilot in
Vietnam,” said Christensen. “It proves to
be quite moving.”
Currently the Groveport Madison Area
Community Choir has 80 adult members
and 17 youths with at least 20 back stage
and lobby volunteers.
“It’s a very diverse group of people that
comes together to give back to the community
by providing fun and quality entertainment,”
said Christensen. “A portion of
the proceeds go to charity (such as
Groveport Madison Human Needs) to
help folks in the area in need. The choir is
a family. They come together for other
events throughout the year to help in the
community as well. Our members are
from all over central Ohio.”
Jarvis sworn in as new trustee
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
Long time former Canal
Winchester city councilman Bruce
Jarvis was recently sworn in as
Madison Township’s newest trustee,
replacing Michele Reynolds who was
elected in November to the state senate.
A Madison Township resident
since 1991, Jarvis was appointed to
Canal Winchester Council in 1996
and served until 2010 when he
resigned to lead what was then called
Main Street Canal Winchester, later
reorganized as Destination: Canal
Winchester (D:CW).
Jarvis and then D:CW President
Bob Garvin led an effort to restore
the Interurban Depot in Canal
Winchester and founded the Canal
Winchester Blues & Ribfest. After
resigning from D:CW at the end of
2015, he was re-elected to one more
term on city council in 2016, serving
a total of 18 years.
When asked why he wanted to return to public service,
Jarvis said, “When Michele Reynolds was elected
to state senate last November, I knew there would be
a call to finish the last year of her term,” said Jarvis.
“I considered my skills and experience to be an asset
and wished to apply those in support of Madison
Township. I assure township residents that I am keenly
aware that they are the ultimate customer and that
I will strive daily to ensure township services are provided
in the most effective, efficient and professional
way possible.”
Jarvis foresees one of the biggest challenges facing
the township to be maintaining and enhancing township
services. He said the cost of providing services continues
to rise and township leaders must be smart about priorities
and potential outside financial assistance.
In identifying township strengths, Jarvis said,
“When it comes to fire and police protection, the township
has a great and welldeserved
reputation within the
community. At times it is literally
a matter of life or death
depending on the professionalism
of these organizations.
Equally critical are the employees
who maintain the roads in
the unincorporated areas of the
township; the same roads needed
by emergency units and the
residents.”
Jarvis felt if the trustee position
is half as interesting as he
thinks it will be, it is likely he
will run for the seat in the
November election for the next
four-year term. His Jan. 26
appointment was to finish out
Reynolds’ term, which expires
at the end of the year.
“All I can say is that when
you experience the ability to
BRUCE JARVIS
make a positive difference for
you and your neighbors through
public service, you naturally
want to do more...that’s why I serve,” said Jarvis.
According to a township press release, trustees
John Pritchard and Katherine Chipps cited Jarvis’
past local elected public service and the lengthy local
community involvement he brings to the position that
helped finalize their decision.
Initially, seven individuals submitted resumes for
the open seat, but before the first round of interviews,
one candidate withdrew. Six candidates underwent
two interviews each, one with the department heads
and the other with the two trustees. The trustees narrowed
their choice down to two individuals and felt
that as the day-to-day managers of township departments,
it was important for department heads to have
interaction and feedback regarding the candidates.
Reynolds resigned from her position as trustee
effective Dec. 31, 2022, and Jarvis will fulfill her unexpired
term through Dec. 31, 2023.
CW to host second Community Plan workshop
The city of Canal Winchester is assembling the
building blocks for a brighter future with its new
Community Plan — an ambitious policy document that
will inform development decisions in the city and
shape the community for decades to come, according to
city officials.
Through interactive, facilitated workshops where
residents, business owners, and stakeholders can collaborate
openly, the community is crafting vital components
to provide the basis of the plan.
The upcoming workshop will articulate strategies
for economic development, transportation, and sustainability
through a series of roundtable sessions.
Additional collaborative sessions will also gauge development
preferences for growth areas along Diley Road,
Bixby Road, and the historic Waterloo village. This
process will culminate in the community’s diverse perspectives
integrated into a comprehensive vision for
the draft plan.
The second Community Workshop will take place
Feb. 22-23 in the Council Chambers room at Canal
Winchester City Hall, 45 E Waterloo St. It will feature
a series of working sessions, roundtable discussions,
and public events.
“The public participation thus far in the planning
process has been great,” said Mayor Mike Ebert. “This
next set of workshops will take the conversations to
the next level by starting to look at some of the data we
have been able to collect along the way.”
Open Houses, with fun and interactive events suitable
for the entire family, will take place Feb. 22 from
6-9 p.m., and Feb. 23 from noon - 2 p.m. The workshop
will begin Feb. 22, with an Economic Development
Roundtable, followed by a collaborative work session
on development preferences. Activities Feb. 23 feature
a Transportation and Sustainability Roundtable followed
by further refinement of development preferences
based on public feedback. All Workshop events
are open to the public. Visit https://www.cwgrowingtogether.com/
to see the complete schedule.
The city of Canal Winchester and its Steering
Committee kicked off this process in June 2022. With
the assistance of McKenna, a consulting firm specializing
in community planning and design, the city will
create a plan that addresses current needs while facilitating
sustainable growth.
Those unable to join in-person can access workshop
presentations on the project website,
https://www.cwgrowingtogether.com/. The draft plan
will be available for review in May 2023.

ROOT EXPOSURE SENSITIVITY
Dr. Kelly
As we grow older, a number of
factors may cause gums to recede,
leaving the upper portion of
the root exposed and vulnerable.
Although this shrinking of the
gums, called gingival recession, is
age-related, it is not found in
every older adult and varies in degree
with each individual.
Gum recession and exposed
roots may be the ultimate result
of a build-up plaque that was not
adequately removed. Also, improper
or aggressive tooth brushing
can irritate the gums and
gradually cause them to recede. A
patient’s root sensitivity can range
from mild to severe and be triggered
by heat, cold, touch, and
certain spicy foods.
Treatment of sensitivity begins
with fluoride, which is absorbed
by the root, remineralizes the
tooth surface, and lessens the
pain. If you don’t find relief with a
fluoride rinse, your dentist may
prescribe a gel containing a
higher fluoride concentration. In
more extreme cases, your dentist
may recommend coating the root
with a protective veneer.
STATE REPRESENTATIVE
Committee
Assignments
Announced
The Ohio House of Representatives legislative
committees for the 135th General Assembly
were named this past week. I am excited to
share that I have been named Vice Chair of the
Higher Education Committee. Additionally, I will
serve on the following committees: Finance
Subcommittee for Primary & Secondary Education,
Economic & Workforce Development, Technology
& Innovation, and Insurance. Eagerly
stepping into these roles, these committees will
enable me to both contribute in areas I have
experience and some expertise and position me
well to advocate for our district’s communities
as we work to bring more and better jobs to the
area. As Vice Chair of the Higher Education
Committee and member of the Finance Subcommittee
for Primary and Secondary Education,
I am determined to improve access to
quality education at all levels for our young
people here in District 10, as well as throughout
Ohio.
Beyond committee appointments, I also have
been busy meeting with constituents from
District 10 as well as recognizing some of them
for their accomplishments. In late January, I had
the opportunity to attend Congressman Mike
Carey’s official Military Academy Nomination
Reception at the Grove City City Hall, where five
of our finest students from Ohio’s 10th District
received nominations to prestigious military
academies. The students, their nominations,
and current high schools are as follows: Isaac
Carter, Naval Academy, Grove City High School;
Brian Fitzsimmons, Naval Academy, Bishop
Ready High School; Luke McCoy, Air Force Academy
and Naval Academy, Grove City Christian
School; Samantha Paduchik, Air Force Academy,
Grove City High School; Zachary Swierz, West
Point, Bishop Ready High School.
By Sarah Slayman
Staff Writer
Steve and Christine Sisko saw
many families in need in their
community, so they stepped up to
help.
Founded in 2015, the Siskos
run Sisko Kidz, a non-profit foundation
in Columbus that aims to
aid under-resourced families
through material donations, education,
and community involvement
opportunities.
Children are particularly vulnerable
during tough transitions,
like divorce or being removed
from domestic violence situations,
and the challenges can
often leave certain needs unmet.
The compassion for struggling
families began when the Siskos
had different experiences growing
up watching family members
struggle to provide specifically for
disabled loved ones. This compassion
carried on to when three of their daughters’ cheer teammates
had a hard time obtaining what was needed to compete, such as
shoes or transportation to out of town competitions. They were
three girls with a troubled home life and the Siskos brought them
under their wing by helping meet those needs. The girls came back
later in life as well-to-do young adults and thanked them for being
a consistent helping hand that they now attribute their current
success to.
“This was the first example we saw of what kids can do with
themselves if you give them the resources and a bit of a structured
environment.” Christine said.
This experience drove Christine to begin what is now Sisko
Kidz from her kitchen. She would see someone in need through
Facebook, find whatever they were lacking and then Steve, after
work, would spend his time doing local pick-ups and drop offs. The
couple eventually collected a surplus of resources through donations
and personal purchases which they stored in their backyard
shed to distribute.
The initial desire was to help families of children with disabilities,
but the spectrum soon broadened to anyone with a kid that
could use some help.
The Siskos are involved in their community through coaching
and the local school systems and began to catch on to who was
struggling within their circles. This connectivity provided them
with many people excited to donate what they could. That backyard
shed has since grown to a 2,800 square foot storage unit next
to B33, the local bingo hall on Refugee Road, that the Siskos took
Messenger photo by Sarah Slayman
Steve and Christine Sisko in their 2,800 square foot building that houses
their charitable contributions for the local community.
over in 2018 to help sustain
their non-profit. A
large portion of the
earnings go towards
maintaining Sisko Kidz.
Christine has since
ended her 16-year
career at Nationwide to
give herself to the foundation
full time.
Since 2015, Sisko
Kidz has helped more
than 500 families and
donated more than
$70,000 of resources.
They’ve gifted items
such as washers, dryers,
sectional couches, and
even cars.
With the surplus of
connections and willing
hands, Christine said,
“We’re getting donations
now from just
about any angle you can
think of.”
They’ve additionally provided a child with a service dog, donated
150 full backpacks to students, paid off students’ lunch debt, fed
several families during the pandemic, and enrolled kids in sports
to keep them connected and busy.
The most rewarding story for Steve was providing a customized
tricycle for a little girl with Down Syndrome who had always
wanted to join her parents as they rode their bikes. Considering
the price of the specialized tricycles, her parents could not provide
her with a means to join them. Just in time for her birthday, the
Siskos gift arrived and she received it with much joy.
The Siskos also cared for a single father of three who recently
moved into his first home by providing the family with beds, lights,
an oven, a fridge, a couch, and first batch of groceries through
their organization. Sisko Kidz will be gifting him a car, turning an
hour long bus ride for his disabled daughter’s appointments into a
15 minute car ride. The family gets excited to see Steve’s truck pull
up and the father remarked, “It’s been Christmas ever since we
met you.” Remembering this impact helps the Siskos to continue.
“It’s rewarding,” said Steve.
Generosity often reproduces itself. Many families helped by
Sisko Kidz return to offer their own help through volunteer work
or donations. There are many volunteers who make Sisko Kidz
happen, but the organization could always use another hand.
Celebrating a veteran of WWII
World War II veteran Eddie Liebbrand was recently celebrated on his 99th birthday. He
and his fellow troops departed for Europe in August 1944. During the war he bravely
fought in 1944’s Battle of the Bulge and later became a prisoner of war under Nazi
Germany rule by December of that year. He and hundreds of other men were held for
nearly four months in a camp where they were denied basic needs and suffered watching
many of their fellow soldiers die of malnutrition, extreme temperatures, or violence
by their captors. He lost 62 pounds and was on the brink of death himself at the prisoners’
liberation on April 2, 1945. He returned home to Columbus and was honorably
Governor announces
DriveOhio funding
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lt.
Governor Jon Husted announced that $100
million is now available to support the
implementation of electric vehicle (EV)
charging infrastructure throughout the
state over the next five years.
DriveOhio, which is a division of the
Ohio Department of Transportation
(ODOT), began accepting proposals from
companies to install and operate EV charging
stations in Ohio.
“Having the capability to support more
electric vehicle charging stations is something
we’ve been working on for years,”
said DeWine. “The development of a
statewide network of charging infrastructure
will enable EV travel across the state,
support private sector investment, and
spur even more economic development
across the state.”
Funding proposals must align with
Ohio’s EV infrastructure deployment plan,
which requires that charging stations support
at least four direct current fast chargers
with at least 150 kilowatts per port.
Currently, Ohio has 13 charging stations
that meet these requirements and plans to
add 30 more locations by 2025.
“This investment gives Ohio another
opportunity to compete for the future of the
auto industry,” said Husted. “Leading in
the automotive sector has been a priority
for Ohio for quite some time, and as part of
that goal, we’ll continue to work towards
building up the EV workforce, so that businesses
have access to talent, and Ohioans
can secure a career in a new, innovative
industry right here in our state.”
Ohio’s EV infrastructure deployment
will focus on interstate corridors before
moving on to U.S. and state routes. Once
charging stations on federally-required corridors
are complete, the remaining funds
will be used for charging along additional
corridors, at state tourist attractions, and
freight corridors.
“This network will go a long way toward
improving the quality of life for Ohio drivers,
giving them initial confidence and flexibility
when driving Ohio’s roads for personal,
professional, or recreational purposes,
regardless of distance traveled or location,”
said ODOT Director Jack
Marchbanks.
“Ohio continues to lead in electric mobility,
giving us an edge in the procurement
process. With states across the country
vying for the same equipment, our plan is
deliberately crafted to attract the right
companies to meet the growing demand for
reliable charging across the state,” said
DriveOhio Executive Director Preeti
Choudhary.
Ohio’s EV infrastructure deployment
plan was approved by the Federal Highway
Administration last month, making the
$100 million in federal funding available
for EV charging infrastructure over the
next five years.
Proposal information and full guidelines
can be found at drive.ohio.gov/nevi.
Furniture Bank
The Furniture Bank of Central Ohio
(FBCO), is looking to the community to
help meet the current demand for furniture
and household goods.
Due to a recent natural disaster, FBCO
is assisting displaced Columbus residents,
who lost all their belongings, filling their
new homes with furniture and basic household
goods. However, donations of gently
used furniture and home goods are needed
from the community to meet the increased
demand.
“We are grateful to be able to help our
neighbors during this crisis but we cannot
do it alone,” said FCBO President and
CEO, Phil Washburn. “We are relying on
our community to help us restore hope for
these affected families by donating their
gently used furniture and housewares.”
The items of greatest need are full and
queen mattresses, dressers, sofas, and
kitchen dining sets.
Donations can be dropped off at
Furniture With A Heart at 2165 Morse
Road in Columbus, Monday through
Sunday, or at FBCO at 118 South Yale
Ave., Monday through Friday, from 8:30
a.m.to 3:30 p.m. Donations of the items listed
can also be picked up by calling 614-545-
3838. All donations are tax-deductible.
Community members that do not have
furniture or home goods to donate can purchase
items from FBCO’s Amazon Wishlist
that will be given directly to families in
need. The wish list can be found at furniturebankcoh.org/amazonwishlist.
For more information on donating furniture
and other home goods, visit furniturebankcoh.org/donate-furniture.
The mission of the Furniture Bank of
Central Ohio is to reduce the impact of
poverty by providing furniture to central
Ohio families and individuals struggling
with severe life challenges. Since 1998, the
organization has distributed nearly one
million furniture pieces and home goods to
over 75,000 central Ohio families by collaborating
with approximately 7,000 furniture
donors, 1,000 financial donors, 2,000 volunteers,
75 social service agencies and faithbased
organizations and many corporate
partners every year. Families visit the
Furniture Bank showroom to personally
select 5-20 pieces of furniture, including
beds, dressers, tables, chairs, and other
household items that are then delivered
the same day.
The Ohio Department of Development
and The Central Ohio Area Agency on
Aging want to remind senior citizens in
Ohio that assistance is available to help
with their home energy bills. The Home
Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) helps
Ohioans at or below 175 percent of the federal
poverty guidelines pay their heating
bills.
Applied directly to the customer’s utility
or bulk fuel bill, the benefit can help manage
heating costs. Senior citizens may go to
their local Area Agency on Aging office for
help with assembling the required documents
and completing their HEAP application.
Senior citizens may also visit
www.energyhelp.ohio.gov to apply online
or to download a copy of the application.
When applying, individuals need to
have copies of the following documents:
• Most recent utility bills
• A list of all household members
(including birth dates and social security
numbers)
• Proof of income for the past 30 days for
all household members (12 months for certain
income types)
• Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency
for all household members
• Proof of disability (if applicable)
HEAP benefits are applied to an individual’s
energy bill after Jan. 1. Applications
