Not everyone born in the UK has

British citizenship automatically.

From 1 January 1983, British

nationality law changed so that it is

not enough to be born in the UK to

have British citizenship. This booklet

explains who is a British citizen at

birth and the rights of children who

are not born with that citizenship to

be registered as British citizens.

Please note: The information set out here does not cover all the

circumstances in which a child is or may become a British citizen.

Its contents do not constitute legal advice and are provided for general

information only.

Some cases may be complex and need detailed evidence. This may

include expert evidence. It is therefore very important to get advice from

a citizenship law specialist.

An explanation of some of the legal words used in this booklet is

given in the glossary at the end.
