Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris
kicks off in style
Show organisers and government officials praised the industry for its strength
at the official opening ceremony
The ribbon cutting ceremony, presented by Vinexposium's
CEO Rodolphe Lameyse and attended by Olivier Becht,
Minister Delegate to the Minister for Europe and Foreign
Affairs and Marc Fesneau, Minister of Agriculture and Food
Sovereignty, united the wine and spirits industry together
yesterday morning.
territories", a symbol of the country's
terroir and heritage which is recognised
around the world and by the likes
of UNESCO. He went to stress the
industry's importance in conquering
international markets and as a form
of soft power which contributes to
the brilliance of France's international
image. Finally, he stressed "The state
is by your side”, highlighting the support
of Taste France and French embassies
around the world, as well as the
government's role in fighting climate
change
Mr Lameyse underscored the
importance of Wine Paris & Vinexpo
Paris 2023, which expects to welcome
30,000 professionals from more than 100
countries, as the number one trade show
for the export of French wine and spirits.
He praised members of the industry
for their resilience, saying "Thanks to
your courage and determination we
have managed to overcome the hardest
challenges."
Minister Delegate Becht then addressed
the crowed in Hall 2. He began by
applauding the French wine and spirits
industry for their performance as one of
the country’s leading exports. Despite
the many challenges of the past few
years, the minister struck a positive note
on the future, in particular highlighting
a more favourable trade climate with
the United States and Australia. “I am
honoured to be here. Thank you for
everything you do and who you are. I
wish you an excellent show", he said
before passing the microphone to
Minsiter Fesneau.
The Minister described France's wine
and spirits industry as the "motor of our
A fine evening
for wine and spirits
The Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023 Opening Cocktail Party welcomed movers
and shakers from across the wine and spirits industry
Show organisers and industry leaders marked the start of this year's
trade show with a special inauguration evening being hosted at the
Hotel de Talleyrand, also known as “Hotel de Saint-Florentin".
Attendees included U.S. Ambassador to
the French Republic and to the Principality
of Monaco, Denise Campbell Bauer and
Vinexposium CEO, Rodolphe Lameyse.
During her speech, Ambassador Bauer
stressed the importance of finding innovative
and sustainable solutions to growing food.
She highlighted the importance of close
international collaboration in order to address
these challenges, while also making clear the
wine and spirit industry has a key role to play.
Speaking at the exclusive event, Ambassador
Bauer said: “Since arriving in Paris a year ago,
I have been working closely with my team
here at the US Embassy to develop strategies
to accelerate action on how to grow food
more sustainably. Last September, I visited
Verzy in Champagne, and I learned (and
tasted) how climate has affected the wine
industry. Experts from the U.S. Department
of Agriculture are collaborating globally, with
scientists here in France and even NASA
to better understand how we can nurture
soils, manage pests and utilize water more
sustainably. I am hopeful that these important
partnerships will continue to grow and mature
like an old grapevine that yields amazing
fruit. I am convinced that viticulture can do so
much to help lead the world of agriculture to a
more sustainable future”
I NEWS I
Vinexposium and Bettane+Desseauve join
forces to boost international reach of wine
and spirits industry
The world's leading organiser of professional events dedicated to wines and spirits and
Bettane+Desseauve, announced the alliance at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023
Upcoming international editions of Vinexpo and Le Grand
Tasting will be held simultaneously in Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo
and New York, helping wine and spirits companies grow their
reputation with consumers.
Rodolphe Lameyse, CEO of
Vinexposium, applauded the news,
saying "This alliance is important
because it will give winemakers
the opportunity to access valuable
feedback from the people who actually
drink wine . At the end of the day, this
feedback is key to ensuring the wine
is meeting consumers' expectations
and for producers to respond to these
market expectations. This is especially
important given the industry has
become increasingly international over
the past 30 years."
The Grand Tasting, an event organised
by Bettane+Desseauve, a group of
experts specialised in publishing
content, including guides, magazines,
books and audiovisuals, will take place
the day before Vinexpo. While each
event will continue to be managed
independently, the combination will
create space for synergies - B2B
through Vinexpo and B2C through
Grand Tasting, enabling producers to
further develop their business in key
markets worldwide.
Thierry Desseauve, President of
Bettane+Desseauve, said: "Bringing the
best wines and those who make them
together with consumers has been
our mission since 2004. Combining
our expertise and our events with
Vinexposium's know-how and high
standards on the international stage is
a project that makes sense. Together,
based on our understanding of the wine
and spirits industry, we will continue
to help professionals build strong and
lasting relationships with consumers"
The Vinexposium and
Bettane+Desseauve alliance is
exclusively international, which means
both structures will retain their own
events in France but join forces abroad,
in Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo and New
York. It will bring extensive experience
in joining producers and the general
public, while helping wine and spirits
companies develop their reputation
across the value chain, both at the
distribution and retail level and with the
end consumer.
(…) THE
COMBINATION
WILL CREATE
SPACE FOR
SYNERGIES - B2B
THROUGH
VINEXPO AND
B2C THROUGH
GRAND TASTING.
The partnership was announced
yesterday at Wine Paris & Vinexpo
Paris 2023 and will begin with a
series of events, opening in Singapore
in May 2023, followed by Seoul in
October, Tokyo in November and
New York in March 2024. It will also
see the expansion of Vinexpo and Le
Grand Tasting's digital offers which will
complement the exhibition and meeting
spaces.
While Vinexpo remains exclusively
reserved for professionals, amateurs
and so-called prosumers will be
welcomed the day before for the Grand
Tasting. Producers and buyers will then
be able to meet at Vinexpo in a setting,
which is conducive to doing business
and tastings between professionals.
"We are delighted to collaborate with
Bettane+Desseauve, as this new
synergy will broaden the scope of our
events and help our clients succeed
in international markets thanks to a
tailor-made offer", said Mr Lameyse.
"It is essential for the wine and spirits
industry to maintain strong relationships
with consumers in order to adapt to the
challenges of declining consumption
and remain competitive in a constantly
changing market"
I NEWS I
Guala Closures Group and Labrenta
offering a wide range of closures
shortly after they joined forces
Italy's Guala Closures Group has a major presence at Wine Paris & Vinexpo
Paris 2023, less than a year after it took over Labrenta, a fellow Italian
stoppers producer also from Italy, which is also represented at the show.
Araex Grand sparks
interest as it showcases
its prestigious Iconic
wine
Araex Grands, one of Spain's leading fine wine groups,
is showcasing a premium wine called Iconic at Wine
Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023.
Iconic, a Rioja, is the result of a
collaboration between Michel
Rolland, a renowned oenologist,
and Javier R. de Galaretta,
a well-known Spanish wine
entrepreneur.
"It's very elegant and very
complex, which is critical.
Together with minerality, this
will make this wine last for the
next 30 years," said Javier, who
is Araex Grands Spanish Fine
Wines' president and CEO.
Araex combines 15 premium
and super premium wineries
and exports widely, including
to Germany, the UK, Canada,
the Netherlands, Switzerland,
China, Japan and numerous
other countries. Indeed Araex
is focused mostly on export
markets rather than Spain.
Remi Sanz, director of
communication for Araex Grands,
said a key focus for the group was
to raise the profile of some of the
wineries in markets where they
currently have less of an impact.
"The idea is to strengthen our
presence in the markets that are
not that big," he said.
Araex Grands, whose wineries
are characterised by their long
tradition and their efforts to
reduce their environmental
impact, has a physical presence
in five export markets and sells in
around 70 markets in total
Hall 5.2 / Stand D-097
Among the most-requested stoppers at the
moment are those made of wood, according
to Gian Marco Fiorini, the export area
manager for Labrenta.
"The trend is going with a wood head and,
depending on the client, a different kind of
stem," he said. "In the last year, in the last
two years, there's a lot of attention from the
medium and big brands for the presence of
the bottle."
The takeover, announced in mid-2022,
is designed to create both industrial and
commercial synergies between Guala
Closures Group and Labrenta, a renowned
producer of high-end tailor-made closures
for a wide variety of bottles containing wine,
spirits, beer, oil and vinegar.
Guala Closures Group as a whole has a very
wide portfolio. For spirits it produces nonrefillable
and anti-counterfeiting closures,
while for wine it supplies a huge range of
screw-caps. There are also aluminium
closures for water, beer and soft drinks, along
with aluminium and plastic closures designed
specifically to deal with the viscosity of olive
oil
Château La Vivonne brings old red
vintages and award winning rosés
to Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris
The producer of Bandol and Côtes de Provence relies
on traditional farming methods without pesticides to
make wine and has been 'organic certified' since
2021.
The Domaine has taken a
number of steps to promote
environmentally friendly farming
methods. For example the
harvest is carried out by hand
and the vines, a mixture of
Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cinsault
and Le Rolle, are planted during
the winter months without
using weed killer or synthetic
fertilisers. Founded in 1904, the
Domaine de la Vivonne near the
medieval village of Le Castellet in
the French region of Provence-
Alpes-Côte d'Azur, benefits from
a unique terroir between the
sea and mountains made up
clay, sand and limestone. The
Domaine, which has received
many awards and distinctions
for its wines and environmental
credentials, was acquired
by Michel Benhaim in
2010 and modernised a
year later. Since then,
the château has
made a name for
itself, producing
exceptional Bandol
rosés, which have
been selected in
the prestigious
Guide Hachette. It's
cave also boasts an
impressive collection
of red Bandol AOP,
including soughtafter
and awardwinning
old vintages
dating back to 1979
New research from global drinks analyst IWSR indicates that previous trends to shape
– will be targets for premium-and-above
spirits and wine brand owners. This
is a shift from pandemic times when
Millennials led the global consumption
bounce-back in 2021 in markets such as
the US, UK, France, Germany, and Brazil.
CHINA PEAKS,
BUT THE US AND INDIA
ARE POSITIONED WELL
FOR SPIRITS
China’s leadership in luxury spirits will
be threatened by the US in the next
few years. The US status spirits market,
spearheaded by high-end agaves, is
forecast by IWSR to add the most value
to this category than any other market
over the next five years. This will bring
it almost level with China while India is
also poised to make strong spirits gains.
POCKETS OF GROWTH
FOR BEER
The best opportunities for beer will be
in India, Latin America, and Africa. IWSR
expects global volumes to rise at a CAGR
of 1% between 2021 and 2026, driven by
Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Colombia
and India. Beer is also well-positioned
to grow in a number of Southeast Asian
markets.
SPARKLING WINE TO
THE RESCUE OF WIDER
WINE CATEGORY
The total wine category is in volume
decline, in line with historical trends, but
proseccos and champagnes continue
to grow and the high-end is gaining
across all sparkling wine segments.
Pent-up demand to celebrate weddings,
holiday gatherings and other personal
milestones after the pandemic has
accelerated demand for fizz.
PREMIUMISATION
DRIVES RTDS
Globally, the value of the ready-to-drink
(RTD) market will rise at a CAGR of 7%
between 2022 and 2026, outpacing
volumes. The value growth reflects
recent strong performances of premiumplus
RTD products across key markets.
E-COMMERCE
WILL MODERATE
Pandemic lockdowns drove rapid
alcohol e-commerce growth of over
40% in 2020 alone – compared with
value growth of 12% in 2019 and 16%
in 2021, across 16 markets that IWSR
A period of strong growth for high-end
spirits in China may moderate in the
coming years says IWSR.
focused on. But over the coming years,
growth rates will moderate as the market
enters a period of normalisation. The
overall trajectory will still be upwards
with alcohol e-commerce expected to
contribute an additional $10 billion to the
beverage alcohol sector between 2021
and 2026, reaching nearly $40 billion by
2026, across focus markets.
HOME PREMISE GROWS
EVEN STRONGER
Economic concerns are set to make the
at-home occasion even more significant
in the future, as shrinking disposable
incomes force many people to cut back
on visits to pubs and bars. IWSR expects
the on-trade recovery to be slower than
previously expected, although prepandemic
volumes will likely return by
2026.
MODERATION
INCREASINGLY DRIVEN
BY ECONOMIC WORRIES
Previously driven by health and wellness
concerns, moderation in alcohol
consumption is now being spurred by
a need to reduce household spending.
Consumers are choosing to cut down
rather than down-trade in many
markets
I EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW I
Italian wines have every
ingredient for success
Almost all the Italian regions are at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023
to showcase their wide range of native grape varieties
Luigi Ferrelli, Director of the Italian Trade Agency in Paris,
explains the winning combination behind Italian wines in
an exclusive interview with The Daily.
Why is the French market important
for Italian wine?
Naturally, the French market is very
important for Italy and even though
it's not the biggest importer, like
Germany or the United States, we are
seeing a growing appetite for Italian
wine and food products. Overall, we
PRESENTING
OUR WINES TO
THE YOUNGER
GENERATIONS
IS KEY
have seen an increase in the price
and reputation of Italian wines,
especially with sparkling wines
like Prosecco which have become
increasingly popular among young
people. Italian exports have not only
recovered, but surpassed pre-covid
levels. This year, Italy exported wines
worth 210.8 million euros to France,
up +18.37% compared to 2021 and
we are still one month away from
finishing the year. So we believe there
is room for expansion when it comes
to Italian wine. Also, when you look
at the numbers in detail, we see that
France is also becoming a valuable
redistribution platform for Italian
wine. Over the past two or three years
some of the biggest wine merchants
in Bordeaux for example have been
purchasing Italian wines and selling
them through their international
networks. This is why being here in
Paris, at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris
2023 is very important.
What are you presenting at Wine
Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023?
We have our national pavilion with
57 producers from 15 of the 20
different Italian regions. This is very
important for us, because the wealth
and variety of our wine offering stems
from these regional products which
are closely linked to the terroir. The
high number of native grape varieties
which Italy can bring to the French
and international markets is one of
the main strengths of Italian wine. It
makes our wine offering very varied
and unique, so that everyone can
find something they enjoy drinking.
Even just a few years ago, there were
some regions which were not very
well known. So while most people
have heard of wine from Tuscany,
Piedmont and Sicily, there are some
areas which deserve more attention in
our opinion, like for example Sardinia
or Calabria, which are at Wine Paris &
Vinexpo Paris with their own pavilion.
In total, there are between 250 and
300 Italian producers at the trade
show, most of whom are focused in
Hall 5. So there are still many, many
Italian wines to be discovered.
What makes Italian wine unique?
The success of Italian wine comes
from the large variety of high quality
products we have to offer. The wines
which we produce can therefore be
enjoyed with every different type
of cuisine. In the beginning, Italian
wine became famous through
Italian cuisine, but today it has
been adopted across the world.
The industry is increasingly looking
for unique products and Italy has
many wines which are made using
artisanal methods and respect for
the environment. This is also partly
because of the favourable climate in
places like Sicily, where there is no
need to use chemicals. People are
increasingly looking for products
which are different, not just popular
grape varieties like Chardonnay. So
one of our main objectives for this
year and next is to see more and
more Italian wines in restaurants
which are not Italian.
What are your key markets of
interest?
There are a number of traditional
markets which are very important to
us such as Japan. China is another
important market which has been
challenging over the past few years
due to travel restrictions, but is now
picking back up. South Korea is also
fast becoming an important export
market for us, not only for wine,
but also the agri-food sector more
generally. Singapore and Hong Kong
are of course important platforms
as well. North America, including
the Untied States and Canada are
of special interest, as is the United
Kingdom and Scandinavia
From next month, Italian wine classes
"Our objective is to present our wines to
French sommeliers who will then go on to
work in starred restaurants in France and
around the world", said ITA's Paris Director,
Luigi Ferrelli.
The Italian Trade Agency is looking to
inform the next generation of industry
professionals about the country's wide
variety of wines, which it says can be paired
with any type of cuisine.
"Today, wine lists have evolved to include
that this will continue to develop in the
future", Mr Ferrelli added
I TRADE TALK I
Looking for something unusual
and different to serve to increasingly
knowledgeable customers
A range of factors influence the wine-buying choices of The
Edition London hotel, including the region and the grape, as
well as the packaging shared in an exclusively interview with
The Daily Guiseppe D’Aniello, Head Sommelier and Buyer.
What kind of products are you
particularly interested in at Wine
Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023?
I really want to try something a bit
more unusual and different, focused
on quality and expression of the
terroir . Also I would love to support
more family business and smaller
producers.
What are the key criteria you look
for when deciding on whether to
purchase a new product?
I'm definitely looking for quality,
complexity and representation of
the region/grape. Also buying wines
for 5-star luxury hotels as Edition.
One more factor is the packaging,
which is very important too.
How are consumers' tastes and
expectations changing in your
market?
I believe that the UK but more
specifically London is one of the
best markets in terms of wine.
People here are mentally ready to
try something new and different.
Also I really believed the customers
are very knowledgeable and what
I have noticed after Covid is that
they wants to drink less but higher
quality.
What do you think is driving these
changes and does this present new
challenges?
Definitely people know more about
wine thanks to the TV Programmes
and different documentaries. The
new challenge is definitely the price
point. Unfortunately with Brexit all
the prices had a big increase.
What segments of the market
do you think will see significant
growth over the coming years?
I believe that Low Alcohol/Alcohol
Free categories will grow fast.We
have already seen a big increase
in biodynamic wines, natural wine,
organic and more sustainable
packaging in the London wine
trade
How to be on-trend as consumer
tastes change in an increasingly
small world
Head Sommelier & Buyer
Amanda
Wammer
Co-Founder
and director of
The importer and wholesaler of premium wines and spirits
is pleased that the internet allows customers to learn more,
although this brings with it challenges.
What kind of products
are you particularly
interested in at Wine Paris
& Vinexpo Paris 2023?
My shopping list includes
Whisky, Cognac,
Armagnac, Calvados,
Gin, Rum, Vodka,
liqueur and Japanese
wine and spirits with
high accolades and
innovative packaging.
Older vintages are a
priority.
What are the key criteria do you look for
when deciding on whether to purchase a
new product?
There are many elements that affect the
final decision, but some of the key criteria
are packaging, taste style, accolades, quality
consistency, price, payment term, and the
producer’s business vision. It takes time
and financial commitment to be successful,
every product is not an overnight hit, so
it’s important that the producers’ goals are
aligned and their support is critical.
How are consumers' tastes and expectations
changing in your market?
The consumers’ tastes are often affected by
trends locally or internationally, much like
fashion. It’s important to be on-trend and
satisfy those demands, but most trends
don’t last for ever. The traditional categories
of spirits (e.g. aged Scotch Whisky, cognac,
red & white wines etc.) are still central to
our needs and account for constant sales
growth.
What do you think is driving these changes
and does this present new challenges?
The world is smaller in many ways -
consumers have easy access to all kinds of
information from the internet, they are more
knowledgeable these days, which is fantastic.
But one of the drawbacks to the proliferation
of information is price transparency. Without
necessarily understanding the various
duties and other costs involved in importing
a product to one country vs another, they
see the cheapest price published anywhere,
forcing price competition and really
compressing margins.
What segments of the market do you think
will see significant growth over the coming
years?
The way consumers purchase wines and
spirits products is becoming easier and
faster. We’re finding major growth tends to
come from service-based channels - private
& corporate VIP clients rather than traditional
demographic segments such as gender, age,
price, and so on.
How important is Wine Paris & Vinexpo
Paris for buyers like yourself?
It’s very important as many of our working
partners participate in Wine Paris & Vinexpo
Paris. I can meet with many of my existing
suppliers at one event while also seeking new
products and developing new connections
Diverse shochus and awamoris
Japanese association
A rich variety of shochus and awamoris are on show in the Be
Spirits area of Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023.
The Japan Sake and Shochu Makers
Association is showcasing, among
much else, Kurokiri, described as one
of the most famous shochus of Japan.
This is based on the sweet potato
and has an especially rich heritage,
being the first shochu to have been
produced by Kichisuke Enatsu, as far
back as 1916.
The "Kuro" part of the name means
black, and is used because the shochu
is produced using black rice-koji.
It is the combination of this black
rice-koji with sweet potatoes that is
credited with giving Kurokiri a gentle
aroma with a flavour that is described
as rich and sweet. Typically Kurokiri is
enjoyed on the rocks.
"We want to promote it especially
in France, but also in Europe," said
Hisato Taura, from the division of
international business development at
Kirishima Corporation, which is based
in Miyazaki, a city in Japan's island of
Kyushu.
In total, the Japan Sake and Shochu
Makers Association has more than 30
shochus on display in the Be Spirits
section of Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris
2023. There are, in addition, three
awamoris being showcased at this
week's event.
The association said that their
products were becoming increasingly
popular in France, but things are in
their early stages, with plenty of scope
for further growth in sales in the
country.
A non-profit organisation, the
association is made up of companies
from across Japan, with members
producing sake, honkaku, shochu,
awamori and hon mirin.
The association can trace its history
back to 1953 and has around 1,700
members, among them around 1,400
sake breweries, around 275 shochu
distilleries and 13 mirin makers
Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023 are the perfect location for
the popular Canadian company to showcase some of its key
products.
Dunrobin Distilleries, an artisinal
Canadian spirits and bitters producer,
is showcasing its Canadian Rum and
Canadian Whisky at Wine Paris &
Vinexpo Paris 2023.
What makes the company's rum
unique, said Mark Watson, the
company president, is that it is made
using maple syrup, which gives the
drink a very Canadian twist.
"It gives it a unique terroir, but it still
has a tropical flavour," said Mark.
This authentic Canadian rum is craft
distilled from cane sugar and organic
black strip molasses before barrel
ageing in bourbon casks and blending
with the maple syrup.
The aroma of the rum is clean and
light with tropical fruit, while the
taste is off-dry with medium intensity.
Dunrobin says there are flavours of
oak, vanilla and butterscotch.
The company's whisky, meanwhile,
is described as approachable with a
perfect blend of wheat, corn and rye.
"It's recognised for its very smooth,
approachable flavour profile. On the
nose you have some vanilla," Mark
added.
The quality of the whisky is widely
recognised, with the company having
won multiple awards just in the past
couple of years.
It is perfectly suited, Dunrobin said, to
being served neat, on the rocks and in
favourite cocktails.
Adrian Spitzer, Dunrobin's CEO, said
the company has a small distillery
on its certified organic farm, with the
products subsequently scaled up at a
larger facility.
"We're very fortunate to have our own
organic lab," he said. "We grow our
own botanicals and do our own soil
development."
PRODAL 94 TO
Maison Sicile mines a rich family
expansion
As well has having a dominant presence
in its home country of Romania, Prodal 94
distributes its vodka and gin in more than 20
international markets.
The products are, said Ovidiu Chiscan,
Prodal's export director, characterised by their
high quality and competitive price.
According to Ovidiu, the gin market remains
"very dynamic" and is "expanding a lot", while
the vodka market is more challenging from a
price perspective.
"We're expanding the distribution. We're
looking for distributors in Africa, who could be
easier to find at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris
because France has a relationship with Africa,"
he said
A father-and-son team from Belgium have drawn on their
Sicilian heritage for their sprezza, which they say offers
something new to the market.
Maison Sicile, which is run by
Riccardo Natale and his son Simon,
has so far focused on its Belgian
home market, but is at Wine Paris
& Vinexpo Paris 2023 as part of a
major drive to secure international
distribution.
"Our family are based in Belgium but
originated in Sicily. My grandparents
came from Sicily to Belgium to work
in the mines," said Simon.
"This company is a way to go
back to our roots. We created our
own recipes based on Sicilian
classic products and methods.
We developed this in Belgium and
produce it in Belgium and Sicily."
Maison Sicile Sprezza is flavoured
with bitter almonds and has flavours
of cherry, according to Simon, who
said the aim was to create a unique
product.
"We always wanted to have
originality and provide something
that doesn't exist, something that is
an alternative to the current market,"
Simon added.
It is a product that can, he said,
please a wider range of consumers
than many typical drinks in the
same class, being sweeter and
having its own flavour and colour.
While Maison Sicile is, in Simon's
words, "a young company" that
is making its first trip outside of
Belgium, it has major international
ambitions, and is at Wine Paris
& Vinexpo Paris 2023 with the
aim of forging partnerships with
distributors and importers.
to attend Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris,
will present some of the region's finest
wines and spirits over the three days.
Their presence is being supported by
the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, as part
of its plans to revamp the wine industry.
For the first time, all of the exhibitors can
be found through an interactive terminal
which will be available at the booth
of AANA (Agence de l'Alimentation
Nouvelle-Aquitaine) in Hall 6, G129. The
terminal helps visitors and professional
buyers by making it possible to navigate
a map of the region. It also helps identify
what wine and spirits companies are
present at the show, broken down by
AOC or production region. Visitors can
then make their way to the stand or take
down the companies contact details.
This way buyers from European countries
and further afield can meet wine and
spirits makers from Nouvelle-Aquitaine
and explore new business opportunities.
The Nouvelle-Aquitaine rich and diverse
agricultural heritage has made it one of
France's leading regions for quality wine
and spirits. AANA works to promote
the work and commitment of Nouvelle-
Aquitaine producers by supporting
their commitment to environmental
protection, know how and origin.
which produce some of the most
renowned wine ands spirits, including
Cognac, Armagnac, Pauillac, Pomerol,
Saint-Emilion and Margaux to name but
a few.
To preserve its terroir and natural
resources, the region has made a
strong commitment to sustainable
and eco-friendly wine making over the
past 20 years. In 2021, 75% of the wine
region was certified for its eco-friendly
approaches and the number continues
to rise. Certified areas and those under
conversion to organic farming also
increased by 43%. This proactive ecofriendly
stance has been mirrored by the
Cognac appellation, which is aiming for
100% of the wine region's surface area
to be Cognac & HVE Environmentally
certified by 2030 at the latest.
ADVERTORIAL
“Les rosés de Provence, des rosés
qui se distinguent. ” at Wine Paris
& Vinexpo Paris 2023
Eric Pastorino, President of the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Provence and
President of the Syndicat des Côtes de Provence, discusses what makes Provence
Rosé so special in an exclusive interview with The Daily
What are you presenting at Wine Paris
& Vinexpo Paris 2023?
We are thrilled this year to have 87
winemakers & wine merchants from
the 3 flagship appellations of Provence
Wines (namely Côtes de Provence,
Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence and Coteaux
Varois en Provence) present at the
tradeshow, which is a number growing
each year !
Aside each winemaker’s & wine
merchant’s stand, the Conseil
Interprofessionnel des Vins de Provence
team is holding a dedicated area to
Provence Wines, gathering 105 Rosé
Wines available for tasting and an
educational map of the vineyard.
This year we are particularly excited
to launch the brand new advertising
campaign, which will be the first time
that the public will see it live !
Can you tell us about your new
advertising campaign Les Rosés de
Provence?
After several months of work, we are
delighted to present our new advertising
campaign in Wine Paris !
This new campaign is the first milestone
in the brand strategy promoted by the
CIVP : it brings freshness, modernity
and authenticity !
It was designed by the Parisian agency
Jésus et Gabriel, known for its creations
for France Culture, Libération, Eurostar,
Cinna, Drouot and Naturalia among
others.
It consists of a series of three visuals
showing a woman and two men from
the new generation of bartenders,
photographed in bars and restaurants in
Provence in order to highlight the origin
of rosés from Provence.
The campaign "Des rosés qui se
distinguent" reflects the unique style of
the Wines of Provence and their origin,
symbolised by the landscapes, the
vegetation and luminosity of the region.
What are the latest trends shaping the
world of Rosé in 2023?
The global market for rosé wine is
significant, with one in every ten bottles
drunk being a bottle of rosé. In addition,
the consumption of rosé has jumped by
more than 20% since 2002. Provence, a
long-standing rosé specialist, is France’s
leading wine region for the production
of AOP rosé wines, accounting for 40
to 45% of production. In this sense, our
ambition is to strengthen the leadership
of our collective premium brand !
Can you tell us about your event Vins
de Provence which is taking place in
Marseille?
Vins de Provence Experiences is a
professional event dedicated entirely to
Provence Wines. For this very first edition,
we will welcome 200 winegrowers and
merchants to present their wines to an
audience of 600 journalists, influencers
and major buyers from around the world.
The event will take place from February
27 to 28 at the Palais du Pharo in
Marseille (France). The ambition of this
event is to create not only a trade fair to
meet winemakers & merchants but also
an immersive experience to discover and
promote our Provençal cultural heritage,
with gastronomy shows delivered by
local chefs with the unique presence of
Chef Alexandre Mazzia, holder of three
stars in the Michelin guide, at the head
of one of the best restaurants in the
world. Visitors will also have the chance
to attend economic and technical
conferences & masterclasses. Finally, we
are very pleased to welcome exhibitors
and some visitors to an evening at
the Palais de la Bourse in Marseille, a
prestigious venue for sharing.
Why is it important for the industry to
meet at global events like Wine Paris &
Vinexpo Paris 2023?
For the Provence Wines winemakers
& merchants, as well as the Conseil
Interprofessional des Vins de Provence,
it is really important to be present at
global events like Wine Paris, to meet and
exchange with French and international
professionals from various markets. It is
a key moment for the actors of Provence
PROVENCE ROSÉS' MAIN
MARKETS AT A GLANCE
A market structure that now reflects a good balance between the
various distribution networks.
The distribution for Provence rosés can be broken down between
super/hypermarkets which account for around 25%, exports
around 42% and other channels 33%, according to figures by the
Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Provence (CIVP). Over the
past five years, exports of Provence rosé have jumped by 64% in
terms of volume and 100% by value over five years. There are eight
key target markets for Provence rosés between 2023 and 2025,
including the United States, Canada, Australia, England, Belgium,
Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland.
Wines not only to present & serve
their wines, as well as their new 2022
vintages, but also to announce the latest
Jean-Claude Mas
Founder of Domaines Paul Mas
Domaines Paul Mas full steam ahead
on whites with plans to cut carbon
The winemaker is presenting his new Viognier 2022 and sparkling cuvée
at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023
Jean-Claude Mas, Founder of Domaines Paul Mas, shares
more details about his plans in an exclusive interview with
The Daily. .
How was the 2022 harvest?
The 2022 harvest was challenging for
wine makers who did not have access
to irrigation because of the high
temperatures in April which forced them
to start picking their grapes early. Those
who did however, were able to postpone
harvesting and obtain a good level of
maturity. This year, we have some really
good quality white wines. As for the
reds, it was important to triage to ensure
the health and quality of the grapes.
Is climate change having an impact?
I think we are too focused on the
immediate and have lost the concept of
time, because if you look back 30 or 40
years, winemakers were already facing
these challenges. 1956 for example
was a terrible year for the vines. Also
we have to account for what we have
changed with our own hands, in the way
we cultivate and make wine. This makes
it difficult for me to comment on the
impact of climate change.
What are you presenting at Wine Paris
& Vinexpo Paris 2023?
We are putting our white and sparkling
wines under the spotlight, with the
presentation of our new Viognier
WE ARE
PUTTING OUR WHITE
AND SPARKLING
WINES UNDER THE
SPOTLIGHT, WITH
THE PRESENTATION
OF OUR NEW
VIOGNIER CUVÉE
2022
cuvée 2022. We are also announcing
the purchase of two new vineyards, the
Château du Larzac and Clos De Maro.
In terms of technical innovations, I
have been experimenting with resistant
cépages like Souvignier Gris. These
grape varieties will play an important
role in reducing CO2 emissions because
they require fewer treatments. We treat
everything organically and based on my
calculations, it saves around 350 litres of
gas per hectare per year, which means
I am saving around 30,000 litres of gas
in total.
It is worth noting however that with the
rise of inflation, consumers are more
focused on price rather than aesthetic.
The space for innovation is therefore
somewhat limited because people do
not want to necessary pay more.
You will be attending Vinexpo
Singapore later this year. How are you
approaching the Asian market?
The asian markets are particularly
interesting, but we cannot generalise.
Each market is unique and therefore
requires a different approach. Singapore
and Hong Kong for example are unique
because they have a large number of
expats. Then you have markets like
Malaysia and Indonesia, where a
significant percentage of the population
is muslim and wine consumptions
resembles the Moroccan market.
There is also the Philippines, where
peoples' purchasing power is very
low yet wine drinking is still part of
the tradition. Japan on the other hand
is experiencing a renaissance for old
world wines and in particular, those
from Languedoc. Then you have China,
where the market has reopened albeit
somewhat incrementally. Chinese
people are increasingly interested in
wine, especially red wines. So there is
no one-size fits all.
What are the other markets of interest?
I am also interested in other markets like
the United Kingdom and United Sates,
but this is proving more complicated.
I think we need to rethink our strategy
for promoting white and red wines in
the US. When you look at the shelves in
the United States, you see lots of pale
French Rosé but far fewer bottles of
whites and reds. This is something we
need to kickstart again
ROSORANGE
OVERCOMES
CHALLENGES
OF ROSÉ
Jean-Claude Mas, founder
of Domaines Paul Mas, has
developed a new concept
dubbed Rosorange. Made form
an assemblage of rosé and
orange wine, the new blend
offers certain advantages over
Rosé. In particular, using orange
wine overcomes many of the
challenges which are associated
with Rosé, including that it can
be made anywhere in the world
and usually, can only be stored for
a couple of years. The innovative
winemaker is at Wine Paris &
Vinexpo Paris, presenting his
latest white and sparkling cuvées.
Filare Italia offers
characteristics that
are produced with
maximum
sustainability
Filare Italia offers contemporary and innovative wines that
are produced using methods that focus on protecting the
environment.
The company's vineyards are located
in the Grave lowland area of Fruili
between Codroipo and San Daniele
on soils of alluvial origin in a climate
that is ideal for grape production.
The resultant wines are known for
their unique and soft characteristics
with aromatic notes.
The winery is the product of the rich
heritage of two families, Gardisan
and Tam, who have had winemaking
in their DNA since 1947.
There are 100 hectares of vineyards,
of which 40 are owned by the group,
with the two families owning the
remaining 60 hectares.
Sustainability is central to the
operations of the company, which
has made significant investments
in renewable energy and has also
made great efforts to ensure that
water is not wasted.
There is drip irrigation of vineyards
and sub-surface dripper lines, which
enable water use to be cut by about
20% through the efficient use of
software.
Another key environmental benefit
comes from the use of digestate,
which is generated from anaerobic
processes linked to the production
of biogas. This approach has
enabled the company to largely
replace chemical fertilisers.
The broad portfolio of wines includes
Ribolla Gialla, described as a white
wine with copper veins, combining
floral notes with hints of almond and
walnut.
To give another example, Prosecco
Extra Dry is straw yellow and has
notes of pear and apple along with
hints of acacia flowers.
There are several wines being
launched, among them Ribolla
Gialla Brut, Ribolla Gialla Extra Dry,
Prosecco Rosé, Filare 16 and Pinot
