for 25 years!

The George Daily Auditorium was built in 1997, years 

before it was common for an Iowa school to have 

access to a state-of-the-art performing arts center. 

What began as a structure (a 696-seat auditorium with 

a black box and board room between the Oskaloosa 

middle and high schools) has become a non-profit 

creative arts ecosystem. The Friends of the Auditorium 

make a “Daily” difference by providing approachable 

professional touring seasons, accessible education 

programs, and energizing community resources. 

But many of the 1400+ students who spend 

time at the Auditorium each year want to know 

one thing: who was George Daily? We expect 

that men with structures named after them were 

powerful and wealthy, but George Daily was a 

brilliant loner who got by with very little during 

his lifetime. 

George’s inheritance of oil-rich land from his 

absent and neglectful father was of no importance 

to him until he established a will leaving his entire 

estate in a trust for the Oskaloosa community’s 

benefit. The Trust is a seed for growth, matching 

the investments made by the community for 

the community. 

The George Daily Auditorium grew out of our 

namesake’s legacy: when the community raised 

half of the funds for an auditorium, the Trust 

matched it. Today, a statue of George Daily 

sits on a bench under an apple tree in front of 

the Auditorium, playing checkers, one of his 

favorite pastimes. 

The founding agreement between the community, 

the non-profit, and the school district helps keep 

each group’s needs met without overextending any 

entity. Like George Daily, if you give more than you 

take, work together, make everything count, and 

share what you can, lots of little, builds an awful lot. 

So much so that the George Daily Auditorium has 

now been the site for 25 years of great community 

joy and sorrow, heated debate and harmonious 

collaboration.

You’ve seen touring Broadway shows like Million 

Dollar Quartet, Spamalot, and Fiddler on the Roof 

without driving 60 miles or paying for parking. Some 

of you have performed in Missoula Children’s Theatre 

shows or Oskaloosa Symphony concerts. Were you 

here when the smoke alarms went off because of an 

onstage fog machine, or a storm triggered the fire 

doors? 

Maybe you’ve sat in the blue Auditorium seats 

to see your child make their theatrical debut, 

perform in a community dance recital, or begin 

their musical journey in band, choir, or orchestra. 

You’ve been here for the parent orientations and 

school board meetings or to sign kids out from 

theatre camp in the lobby. 

Some of you have tied your red ties to be volunteer 

ushers during high school in the ‘90s and early 

2000s, and some have been season ticket holders 

since the beginning. 

And some of us don’t know Oskaloosa before 

August 1997. We’ve only known Oskaloosa 

with the Auditorium. In this place, you can see 

nationally touring shows, work on tech crews 

alongside professional theatre technicians, play 

with world-class musicians, practice directing or 

designing, or generally conquer the world with 

your curiosity. 

We have all had different experiences with the George 

Daily Auditorium over the past 25 years, but to quote 

one writer, Gene Luen Yang, “We all share the same 

tomorrow.” 

This year, we aren’t just bringing you world-class 

entertainment but also world-class experiences 

that will help shape our shared tomorrow at the 

George Daily Auditorium. The Auditorium and 

Oskaloosa are the Iowa host for Arts Midwest 

World Fest through 2025, allowing residents 

and visitors to experience the world through 

gatherings, workshops, and concerts exploring 

art, language, and culture with international artists.

MAKE A PITSTOP IN MAHASKA COUNTY AT ANY 

ONE OF OUR MOTORSPORTS TRACKS. 

Greenlight to Fun 

Eddyville Raceway Park located in Mahaska 

County is a World Drag Racing Alliance (WDRA) 

sanctioned 1/8 mile drag strip on 60+ acres of 

land. Eddyville Raceway Park opened in 1965, 

and over many years it has grown into an amazing 

track with weekly visitors throughout the spring, 

summer, and early fall months. Eddyville Raceway 

Park hosts many family-friendly events throughout 

the season, including weekly test and tune, nonpoints 

races, bracket events, junior dragsters & 

street cars, motorcycle races, and more. Some of 

the highly anticipated events include Nitro Chaos, 

Musco Lighting Night of Fire, Motorcycle Mania, 

and Funny Car Chaos. 

Not sure what drag races are? According to the 

National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), “a drag race is 

an acceleration contest from a standing start between 

two vehicles over a measured distance. A drag racing 

event is a series of such two-vehicle, tournamentstyle 

eliminations. 

The losing racer in each contest is eliminated, and the 

winning racers continue until one remains.” For a full

Dust & Dirt Doesn’t Hurt 

The Southern Iowa Speedway is a semi-banked, 1/2 

mile, dirt track located right in the heart of Oskaloosa. 

It is one of eight remaining 1/2 mile dirt tracks in the 

state of Iowa. The Southern Iowa Speedway continues 

to provide a seasonal mid-week Wednesday night 

race program for drivers & fans. The fast-paced racing 

events spin up dust, excitement, and community 

support. 

You can always catch sprint car racing on the first 

Monday in August. They also host Redneck Rally 

Races, Demolition Derbies, Concerts and other events 

on the track each year and have camping available. 

Racing season concludes with a Fall Challenge race

In July 2022, our community was designated by the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs as one of Iowa’s 

Great Places. This designation came out of a long history of excellent arts and culture organizations and 

projects, as well as the organized efforts of the community’s Arts and Culture Roundtable. 

This evolving group of committed arts and cultural organizations and individuals meet monthly to 

share successes and challenges and build partnerships with each other to strengthen the sector for 

community benefit. Branded as “Mammothly Creative,” the Arts and Culture sector provides educational 

and creative opportunities for Mahaska County residents and the surrounding areas. 

Seven groups led the charge in the application for Great Places: Astarox Productions, Fine Arts and Cultural 

Events of Mahaska County (FACE), the George Daily Community Auditorium, the Golden Goose Club, 

the Mahaska County Historical Society/Nelson Pioneer Farm & Museum, the Oskaloosa Public Library, 

and Studio Osky. These seven groups provide public access to literature, visual art, performance art in 

film, theatre, music, and radio (or at 

least podcasting), history, cultural 

education, and much, much, more. 

What are the creative and expressive 

projects in your future? What do you 

want to do with your instrument, 

your art, and your stories? When 

you come to Mahaska County, you’ll 

find that there is so much more 

to Arts and Culture that we came 

up with a new way to express it --

Astarox Productions 

Astarox Productions’ vision is to bring quality film 

and television productions to the heart of Iowa. 

With over 40 years of production experience, 

founders Paola Cipollina and Max Leonida have 

worked with international clients and now bring 

their expertise to William Penn University. Leonida is 

currently Artist-in-Residence at MUSCO New Media 

School at William Penn. Leonida and Cipollina both 

promote international projects and businesses 

to offer meaningful experiences for students and

Fine Arts and Cultural Events (FACE) 

of Mahaska County 

FACE was founded in 2003 with the vision to 

establish Oskaloosa as an arts and culture center. 

The organization now manages the Oskaloosa Art 

Center & Studios with a professional art gallery, small 

art supply store, co-op art gallery for local artists, a 

ceramics studios, classroom space, and performance 

venue “The Outer Space.” FACE hosts a variety of 

events and classes in the Art Center for all ages. They 

also manage the Oskaloosa Sculpture Tour, have a 

sculpture studio for classes and art use, and create 

public artworks around the city of Oskaloosa. FACE 

seeks to benefit the Mahaska County community 

through arts-related leadership, accessible and 

participatory programing, and encouraging and

George Daily Community Auditorium 

George Daily Community Auditorium provides equal 

access to high-quality live performing arts, arts 

education, and energizing community resources. 

Come to the Auditorium to enjoy a school band 

concert, youth theatre performance, or one of the

Golden Goose Club 

The Golden Goose Club is an organization made 

up of generous women who focus on improving 

their community. It has provided funding for many 

things that local art and culture groups need to 

help achieve their respective goals. Each of the 

“current” 177 members donate $100 per quarter to 

this 501(c)(3). Community improvement projects are 

presented to them each quarter, members vote for 

the project they like best and whichever project gets 

the most votes gets their funding for that quarter. 

Their donations have exceeded $320,000 toward 

community projects. This community is the perfect 

example of what people can accomplish by working 

together. The Golden Goose Club is a vibrant piece of 

what makes Mahaska County, a Great Place in Iowa. 

Mahaska County Historical Society/ 

Nelson Pioneer Farm & Museum 

The Mahaska County Historical Society preserves 

and protects the history and heritage of Mahaska 

County for present and future generations through 

historic preservation of 15 historic structures, exhibit 

development featuring local stories, and youth and 

adult programming. It also serves as a community 

gathering place for the annual Fall Festival each 

September. They are proud to be a resource for 

schools with their field trip program, researchers in 

the genealogy library and other historical projects 

and organizations throughout the county. The site 

is open to the public every May-September, but

Oskaloosa Public Library 

The Oskaloosa Public Library’s mission is to serve as a 

primary source of information, education, recreation, 

and personal fulfillment for all of Oskaloosa and 

Mahaska County. This mission is fulfilled with a 

Makerspace Lab, a genealogy room, programming 

for all ages, WiFi throughout the building, lots of 

comfy seating, interactive displays on the 1st and 2nd 

floor, and a collection of over 65,000 items available

Studio Osky 

Studio Osky is a creative revisioning of The Barley 

House 1916 property, once housing Mercy Hospital. 

The vision is to create a space for artists to access 

affordable studio spaces to pursue their artistic 

and creative endeavors. The vision also includes 

retail spaces, entertainment venues, classrooms 

and teaching spaces, and community rental areas. 

Founder Lauren Terrell arrived in Oskaloosa to attend 

William Penn University. She has been actively 

involved with the community since her graduation, 

including serving on several boards. Her passion for 

and pursuit of art in her limited free time inspired the 

creation of Studio Osky. For more info: https://www.

A CELEBRATION 

OF 150 YEARS 

The founding of Penn College was led by the 

Society of Friends united in the purpose of 

creating a Christian Liberal Arts College to offer 

broad religious and cultural education to youth 

and any others who wished to take advantage 

of the college program. Established when times 

were uncertain, money was hard to get, and the 

future looked dark. Yet in those trying times there 

were those who said, “We must go forward.” 

Old Main housed Penn College for 43 years. Classes 

began in 1873 with the first graduate in 1875. This 

building was the main structure on the college 

campus until tragically destroyed by a fire. Penn Hall 

was built a few blocks north of the original college 

location in 1916. Classrooms and administrative 

offices constructed in prairie-style architecture began 

functioning in September 1917. Today, Penn Hall is 

the heart of the Oskaloosa campus. 

A few memorable dates in Penn history: the first 

football team was in 1891, the first basketball team was 

in 1900, and the first May Day Celebration was in 1901. 

May Day was celebrated with plays, May Pole dances, 

King and Queen of May Day, and picnics. The first 

Penn Letter Club was organized in 1913 and the first 

Homecoming was held the same year. Penn College 

gained North Central Accreditation (NCA) in 1916. 

The Women’s Residence Building, Lewis Hall, at the 

time of construction in 1916-1917 was far superior to 

most college dormitories. The four “cottages” were 

named in honor of famous Quaker women: Margaret 

Fell, Elizabeth Fry, Mary Dyer and Sybil Jones. 

The cornerstone for Spencer Memorial Chapel was 

laid in October 1921. Given by Mary Spencer, in 

memory of her late husband, Harry L. Spencer, a 

successful, local businessman; they both believed that 

those who prosper in a community should contribute 

to its life and progress. Spencer Chapel has served 

many purposes over the years. The Chapel has housed 

spiritual gatherings, musical/theatrical performances, 

community events, and other student activities. It 

once housed a skating rink, a two-lane bowling alley, 

the campus bookstore and a small café for students. 

Closed since 1995 for renovations, the Chapel still 

stands proudly as the cornerstone of campus. 

Having a setback in 1931, Penn College lost its 

NCA accreditation. In 1933 Penn College became 

William Penn College. Leading the charge, Dr. 

Donald Schultze, Dean and Head of the Education 

department, devoted his energies and abilities 

towards NCA accreditation and National Association 

of Colleges for Teacher Education (NCATE). NCA 

accreditation membership was regained in 1960, 

Penn received NCATE accreditation for its teacher 

education program in 1965, putting William Penn in a 

position for growth. Highlights of the growth include; 

• Gift from Mrs. SC Peasley, given in memory of 

her husband who attended Penn College 

in 1881-82, enabled Penn to purchase the 

Gibbs house (1945) and the farm of over 

300 acres (1947). Peasley Hall became first 

men’s dormitory (1945), then converted to the 

Fine Arts Department in 1959. Peasley Farm 

was operated as a dairy by the college.

• Gymnasium was built by mid-year 1956-57 

• In 1961, building dormitory housing for men 

began. The first unit of Watson Hall was built 

and in use by September 1962, the second 

unit was completed in 1963. 

• Gift from Dr. Edgar (1900 graduate) & Mrs. 

Wilcox, the first phase of the new library was 

completed. 

• Opened in the Fall of 1966, the Student 

Center, now known as Dana Atkins Memorial 

Union, provided a college activity center, 

bookstore, health center and dining hall. 

• East Men’s Dormitory, now Eltse Hall, was 

built and in use by mid-year of 1966-67, 

named after Ralph Eltse (1909 graduate). 

• Groundbreaking for Edwin McGrew Fine Arts 

Center took place on May 21, 1973. The 

facility includes an art studio/classroom, a 

recital hall and choir/band room. 

From a generous donation by Willard (1921 graduate) 

and Edith Ware, the board approved their desire 

to name the building after Edwin McGrew (1895 

graduate). Ware Recital Hall, was named following a 

generous gift by Edith Ware in memory of her husband. 

In 2000, William Penn College became William Penn 

University and the face of William Penn began to 

change. It has been an exciting time. Enrollment 

increased when William Penn rejoined the NAIA 

allowing for athletic scholarships to be awarded to 

student-athletes. In February 2000, ground-breaking 

ceremony took place to build Twin Towers, a new 

residence hall. 

A few years later a major, capital campaign was 

implemented to address the growing needs of the 

university. Through the generous support of the 

community and alumni, the following were added: 

• Groundbreaking in 2008, Penn Activity Center 

(PAC) was the site for Commencement 

ceremony in 2009. The PAC is the hub of 

campus activities with indoor turf, basketball 

courts, volleyball and 300-meter track. In 

2020-21 the Science Center was completed 

on the third floor. State-of-the-art classrooms 

and laboratories for biology, chemistry, nursing 

and more were open for students in fall 2021. 

• Musco Technology Center (MTC), named for 

Musco’s generous support to the project, 

houses Applied Technology and New Media 

academic divisions along with an atrium that 

is host to numerous campus and community 

events. The MTC and classrooms were in 

operation by 2009. 

A good challenge to have, William Penn needed to 

add another residence hall to its campus to house the 

increase in student enrollment. Market Street, a 250 

bed dormitory was open for students the spring of 

2013. 

In 2014, William Penn received the gift of Mahaska 

Bowl, now known as Statesmen Lanes and Event 

Center. This gift has been instrumental in the growth 

and success of the men’s and women’s bowling teams. 

Community league play still exists, and the high school 

teams make full use of the lanes, as well. 

Community outreach became a purpose for William 

Penn not only for the citizens, but its students became 

engaged with community members and participated 

in activities. William Penn stands strong, despite the 

current ups and downs of higher education. William 

Penn has persevered and is poised to celebrate 

150 years of progress. The leadership continues the 

fortitude of its founders saying, “We must go forward.” 

• Statesmen Community Stadium hosts over 

100 athletic events for both the university and 

Oskaloosa Schools, annually. First game was 

played in fall 2011. 

• A top-of-the-line soccer field was created on 

the west side of the stadium in 2015, named 

Drost Field after a generous gift from Carl 

(1969 graduate) and Martha Drost.

Every holiday season, 250,000+ LED Christmas lights illuminate the 

facades of buildings surrounding Oskaloosa’s City Square Park. 

Stroll through the Square with a cup of hot cocoa in 

one hand and shopping bags in the other. Listen to the 

holiday music playing over outdoor speakers. Climb the 

stairs to the historic bandstand, where you can take in a 

360-degree view of Painting with Lights. You might just 

think you’re the star of your very own Christmas movie. 

Painting with Lights is the first and only display of its kind 

in Iowa, and is the result of countless volunteer hours and 

generous donations from individuals and businesses each 

year. The brilliant display of lights covers all four sides of the 

town square and takes several weeks to install. Fundraising 

and planning for the project happen year-round. 

Thinking about a visit to see the lights? Plan to spend the 

night. Around and nearby the Square, you’ll find coffee 

shops and cafes, restaurants, and retail including clothing 

boutiques, a music store, Brown’s Shoe Fit, Oskaloosa True 

Value, and the Book Vault, a unique book shop in a beautifully 

renovated historic bank building. Support small businesses 

with your Christmas shopping, then stick around to see the 

lights turn on! 

The Turn on the Lights ceremony happens on the 

Saturday before Thanksgiving. The lights glow daily 

4:30 pm to 11:00 pm through the first week in January.

Cycling enthusiasts will enjoy County Road T65 (take East Glendale Road), 

a nine-mile look at rural Mahaska County’s agricultural past and present. 

Two miles into your ride, you come across the 1844 Nelson Pioneer Farm 

& Museum, Iowa’s first museum to honor pioneer farming. As you 

continue, the scenery gives you a look at present-day sprawling soybean 

and cornfields. Your journey through Mahaska County’s farming 

community will comes to a conclusion at the intersection of G39, a safe 

Picnic Area spot to turn around and head back toward Oskaloosa.

Birding in Mahaska County is an ever-changing 

adventure! On the migratory path for many 

birds in both the spring and summer the 

variety of birds to be seen is always changing. 

A patient eye during migration will catch views 

of warblers, shorebirds, falcons, ducks and 

sparrows not usually found in Iowa. 

If you only have a few moments to bird, Maskunky 

Marsh in eastern Mahaska County is a must stop. 

It can be found about five miles east of Oskaloosa 

on Highway 92 at Snyder Road. The marsh has 

parking on both the north and south sides of the 

marsh. Plenty of bird viewing can be done from 

your car. If you have the time, a walk closer to the 

marsh is also possible.

From the north parking lot, you will view 

shorebirds, falcons, and ducks on the marsh. From 

one spot you can see the entire marsh and you 

never know what might be visiting for the day 

during the spring and fall migrations. 

From the south parking lot, you will view song 

birds in the trees and native grasses. During the 

spring, nesting is common in this area. 

With an eBird list of at least 161 species, 

Maskunky Marsh, maintained by Mahaska County 

Conservation, is a must visit.

While sitting in a coffee shop, have you ever 

wondered who had coffee there 100 years ago? Was 

it even a coffee shop? Or could it have been briefly 

owned by a fraudulent investment advisor who fled 

town with a stash of diamonds and cash?! Have 

you ever considered that your dentist’s office might 

have been a cigar store and pool hall? Or that your 

apartment was once a saloon? Or that your favorite 

hangout has hosted many presidential candidates 

over the years, including President Obama? 

These aren’t just flights of fanciful imagination. 

These are the secret past lives of several buildings 

in downtown Oskaloosa. And these historical “fun 

facts” have been uncovered, researched, and 

installed on historical building markers by a group 

of local history buffs so that you can discover them 

for yourself! 

Historical markers have been installed on ten 

buildings, all within easy walking distance of each 

other, including: Centennial Building, City Fire 

Department, Frankel Building, IBM Building, Iowa 

Building, Oskaloosa Public Library, Stapp Building, 

Trolley Place, and the Mahaska County Courthouse 

and Book Vault. 

Look for these! 

Each historical marker (plaques pictured above) 

includes the year the building was built, pictures 

of the building through the years, and interesting 

tidbits of information that are sure to charm 

community members and visitors alike. 

While on your self-guided walking tour, don’t 

forget to take a stroll down The Alley (between 

Bridal Dreams and Smokey Row Coffee) to check 

out the nationally and internationally recognized 

Oskaloosans featured on the “Legacy of Excellence” 

signs. The walls of this alley-turned-gathering-space 

are lined with stories about illustrious locals who 

went on to life in the public eye—some of whom 

have returned to The Alley just to share firsthand 

stories after seeing their sign!
