Coldest Night of the Year
Few things are guaranteed
but you can bet that
a Canadian winter will
have some chilly evenings,
some even downright
frigid. Folks who are experiencing
homelessness can
find this weather to be
life-threatening, but this
February you can help.
On Saturday, February
25th, 2023 Nelson CARES
Society will host the 9th
annual Coldest Night of
the Year(CNOY). The
Coldest Night of the Year
Noa Dagan, Housing Support
Worker
is a walk-a-thon fundraiser
that raises awareness and
funds for the most vulnerable
right here in our community.
The funds raised by the Coldest Night of the Year walkers,
donors and sponsors stay in the community to fund the Ready
for Home Program operating out of Ward Street Place. The
Ready for Home program supports those residents in navigating
healthcare and government documents, as well as many
other challenges, allowing them to remain safely housed. Nelson
CARES preserves, maintains, and develops safe affordable
housing, but sometimes acquiring a place to live is not enough
and people often need some help to maintain that housing.
Housing Support Worker with the Ready for Home Program
at Ward Street Place, Noa Dagan shares “Coming into this role,
I was already aware of how difficult to navigate the systems
(government, healthcare, etc) can be, so seeing what the residents
here are facing each day, and how incredibly resilient
and strong they must be to tackle this system, I am constantly
impressed by the experiences I hear about and how wonderful
the people that I am interacting with on a daily basis are. I try
to meet each person where they are as an individual, appreciating
what they have pushed through to get to today, and see
what skills I might have to help support them in what they
need. I want to help serve in a hands-on way and build these
relationships while helping them and myself become more
integrated into the community we’re building here at Ward
Street Place.”
Nelson CARES would like to invite everyone to spend some
time on the streets on Saturday, Feb 25th and to keep in mind
the challenges faced by those who spend years there. The walk
will be followed by a simple chili meal prepared by the class
from the Post Graduate Hospitality Management program
at Selkirk College with donations from the Kootenay Co-op
Story and Save On Foods. The event needs volunteers, team
captains, walkers, and donors. Come out and help make Nelson
a warmer place for everyone. Head to www.cnoy.org/nelson
or email cnoy@nelsoncares.ca.
Kootenay Connect offers hope
Extended federal funding helps Kootenay region contribute
to global biodiversity conservation targets
What do grizzly bears, badgers, and western painted turtles
have in common? They are three of the more than 30 at-risk
species in the Kootenays that will continue to be helped by a
large-scale habitat conservation project thanks to a big boost
in federal funding.
Managed by the Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP),
the Kootenay Connect Priority Places project began in 2019 as
a four-year project with a $2 million grant from Environment
and Climate Change Canada’s Community-Nominated Priority
Places (CNPP) program. Kootenay Connect includes over
30 partners collaborating on over 50 restoration projects benefiting
species at risk and the habitats they need for survival.
KCP recently learned the project will receive an additional
$1.95 million, which will extend this habitat restoration work
another three years.
“Kootenay Connect is providing on-the-ground solutions
to address the loss of biological diversity in our region,” said
Marcy Mahr, KCP’s Kootenay Connect Manager. “From rolling
grasslands and open dry forests to rich wetlands and towering
stands of old growth cedar-hemlock, all of these habitats
are essential to the day to day, seasonal, and long-term survival
of the species who call the Kootenays home.”
Four landscapes totalling one million hectares have been
the focus of Kootenay Connect: Bonanza Biodiversity Corridor
(north of New Denver), Creston Valley, Columbia Valley
Wetlands, and the Wycliffe Wildlife Corridor (north of
Cranbrook).
CNPP funding will now be extended until 2026 to support
conservation and restoration projects in the current areas as
well as three additional hotspots for biodiversity. This funding
boost will expand the Kootenay Connect project area to 16.6
million hectares, which is about 20% of the Kootenay Region.
“We’re going to see new conservation projects that address
the habitat needs of more species at risk along the Slocan
River, in the Duncan Lardeau Valley at the north end of Kootenay
Lake, and around Columbia Lake,” explained Mahr.
“It’s an exciting time for enhancing and connecting more
wildlife habitat with big implications for biodiversity in the
Kootenays.”
James (Jim) Murray Anderson
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our much-loved father, son, brother
and papa, Jim Anderson on January 18th, 2023 at the Trail Hospital with family at his side.
Jim was predeceased by his father James and survived by his children Barry and Heather
(Anthony), his grandchildren Caleb, Presley, Henry and Alice, and his mother, Catherine.
Dad was born in the Peace region, Alberta where he spent his formative years before moving
to Okanagan Falls in BC. As a young person he loved water skiing and skating on Skaha
Lake. He played hockey throughout his younger years and into adulthood and found a love
for the game of cricket while attending prep school in Vernon, BC.
In his late teen years Dad moved to Vancouver Island where he started logging in the
forests around Port Renfrew, eventually moving to Duncan to raise a family and start his
own logging company. With his time in forestry, he made many lifelong connections and
worked all around British Columbia.
Anyone who knew our Dad, knows his love for sports.
Once he retired from playing hockey, he could always be relied on to know old players and their stats and may have been
one of the longest running subscribers to his beloved Hockey News.
Dad had a great love for his family and friends. It was apparent towards the end of Dad’s life that he had surrounded himself
with amazing people who cared deeply for him.
Our family would like to extend our gratitude to the staff at the Trail hospital who treated our dad and family with such
compassion and amazing care.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 1:00 pm at the Salmo Legion.
Heritage Week 2023
Heritage BC is excited to launch Heritage Week 2023, an
annual event that celebrates heritage across the province, taking
place February 20-26. This year’s theme encourages everyone
to explore their local community’s heritage in all the ways that
excite them! This could look like joining a walking tour, taking
part in a workshop, or even cooking a family recipe at home.
Kirstin Clausen, Executive Director of Heritage BC explains
that “celebrating Heritage Week is easy. During Heritage Week
we encourage people to have fun, and partake in the many programs
and events that are being offered by communities across
BC. These programs showcase stories, activities, and engagement
and give us an opportunity to learn how we are connected
with each other. Heritage Week brings attention to how heritage
is always with us and in all ways strengthens our capacity
to bring about greater reconciliation, diversity and equity in our
communities:
Organizations province-wide are encouraged to create and
host themed events and activities that highlight our diverse heritage
across BC. Hosts submit their events to the Heritage Week
2023 events calendar which anyone can use to find activities in
their area. There are currently 45 events across 34 organizations
and counting, in communities from Qualicum to Terrace to
Fernie. As part of Heritage Week awareness, Heritage BC also
distributes 2,000 posters to museums, libraries, and organizations.
We also encourage municipalities to join the Province of
BC in making a heritage proclamation
“There are serious reasons to celebrate Heritage Week too.”
says Britney Dack, Chair of the Board of Directors at Heritage
BC. “It is an opportunity to recognize the enrichment brought by
our Province’s diversity, as well as acknowledge that indigenous
culture has always existed and is woven into our memory of culture,
place, and practice. Heritage Week allows for the coming
together of people from all walks of life, and from every community,
to showcase both the tangible and intangible cultural
heritage they value.”
Kootenay PRIDE is thrilled to be
coming back in 2023 to the streets,
flag poles, museums, parks, coffee
shops, and plazas in a big way for
another fully in-person event.
The dedicated team of busy volunteers
has started working on the
upcoming year with no shortage of
ideas for events for the whole family
as well as some adult-only events.
The PRIDE crew is hoping to be able
to offer the community more events
throughout the year leading up to
the long weekend in August, when historically the West Kootenays
has held the big Pride celebrations, events, and socials
including the parade. This expanded offering of events depends
on volunteer capacity. So if you are curious about how you can
help please join them.
“We are looking forward to working together to create a bevy
of events that have something for everyone, from games nights,
archive workshops, and dance parties…Pride 2023 hopes to
have it all. Come join the fun” Michael Wicks. Kootenay PRIDE
you are curious about how you can be part of the fun or if you
have an idea please watch our social media for the next meeting
Mr. Capone
sponsored by
Capone came to the centre as a stray who had been fighting his
way through life. Although he looks tough with all his scars and a
little rough around the edges, this handsome boy is a real love bug.
He is always seeking attention and can quickly be won over with
treats and face scratches, you will know once he starts his drooling.
He loves when you are willing to sit on the floor with him and just
let him nap in your lap and spend quality time with him. Capone
definitely has opinions about his toys being touched and also being
pet a certain way so a home without small children would be ideal.
He has done well with other cats for the most part, his confidence
takes others out of their shell.
If you think he sounds like a good fit for your home, please fill out an
application or call the centre for more information.
Apply Now for Leadership Summit
Expressing opinions, developing ideas and planning to take
action in their communities: these are some of the ways that
youth will be inspired at the Basin Youth Network Leadership
Summit, taking place in Kimberley from May 12 to 14, 2023.
Youth aged 14 to 18 are invited to apply now to this unique,
free opportunity, hosted by Columbia Basin Trust.
“This summit is an amazing opportunity for Basin youth
to meet new people, expand their friend circles and develop
leadership skills, all while having a great time,” said Justine
Cohen, Manager, Delivery of Benefits, Columbia Basin Trust.
“We’re so pleased that youth can once again gather in person,
to connect and share their perspectives with each other and
with the Trust.”
Basin youth already have significant impact in their communities,
and this action-packed weekend will spark their
desire and ability to continue this great work—now and into
their adult lives. Workshops will range from learning about
ꛫaqam’s Guardians in Training, to considering how being
a leader is like being a Jedi knight, to practicing teamwork
through activities like slam poetry and hip hop dance. Participants
will also be invited to share their aspirations for their
communities and the region as part of the Trust’s Columbia
Basin Management Plan renewal process.
The event is part of the Trust’s Basin Youth Network, which
helps communities increase local activities and opportunities
for youth. The Trust currently supports 27 local youth
networks.
By setting youth-focused community priorities and growing
their leadership skills, summit participants will be well
positioned to make a difference in their communities,” said
Mike Kent, Regional Coordinator, Basin Youth Network.
“Workshops at the summit are delivered in interactive, inclusive
and experiential ways that integrate learning and skill
development, while maximizing fun and creating lasting
positive relationships with other participants. I encourage all
youth 14 to 18 years old to apply now!”
To learn more about the 2023 event and apply online by February
28, visit ourtrust.org/youthsummit. Successful applicants
will be subsidized to attend this event for free. Columbia
Basin Trust supports the ideas and efforts of the people in the
Columbia Basin. To learn more about the Trust’s programs
and initiatives, and how it helps deliver social, economic and
environmental benefits to the Basin, visit ourtrust.org.
Angler finally hooks a winner,
Pat Kelly has been fishing Kootenay Lake since he was a child
and up until now the reward for a good day on the water has
always been a delicious trout dinner. That changed this week
when the Calgary resident won two $500 gift certificates for
his entry into the Kootenay Lake Angler Incentive Program.
Kelly entered the heads from 55 bull and rainbow trout in
January, the bounty from his past two months of fishing. “I
never win anything, but I got the call and I thought, ‘Wow, it
can actually happen,’” he said. “There’s still a truck to win, so
for the next few months I’ll be trying a bit harder.”
The Kootenay Lake Angler Incentive Program is a citizen-driven
initiative intended to reduce the over-abundance
of rainbow and bull trout in the lake and promote the recovery
of their main prey, the endangered kokanee salmon. Anglers
harvest rainbow and bull trout in the main body of Kootenay
Lake and then drop off the heads at local depots to enter a
monthly draw for a prize worth $1,000.
All entries are eligible for this year’s grand prize, a 2022
Ford F-150, with the off-road Tremor package, from Nelson
Ford. A 2022 Polaris side-by-side ATV from Main Jet Motor
Sports has already been awarded.
The lucky Calgarian spends part of every year at his cabin
near Sanka Creek, fishing from his Starcraft Chieftain with a
hard top in the winter and an open North Craft outfitted for
summer. Kelly can also be found fishing in the creek and shore
casting.“I’ve been fishing here since I was a little kid and I just
love it,” Kelly said. “A few years ago, I would come for a few
weeks here and there, but since Covid, it’s more like a month or
two at a time, depending on work.” Kelly has seen the ups and
downs of the Kootenay Lake fisheries over the decades, and he
is encouraged by the size of the trout in recent years. “Four or
five years ago, we were catching one and two pounders, then it
was two to three pounds,” he said. “Now we are catching threeand
four-pound trout. A week ago, I got a seven pounder, so
it’s nice to see them bouncing back.” Kelly is anxiously waiting
for the recovery of the Kootenay Lake kokanee population. “It
would be nice to see the government put millions of eggs back
into those spawning channels for four or five years and really
get things going again,” he said.
In the meantime, Kelly will use his gift certificates from
Wynndel Foods & Outdoor Gear and the Crawford Bay Market
to buy fuel and fishing gear in his pursuit of the derby’s
grand prize pickup truck.
HOW TO ENTER: Anglers must bring an intact fish head
(or full fish for Woodbury tissue sample) to one of four return
depos operated by co-sponsors Balfour Gill & Gift Gas Station,
Woodbury Resort, Crawford Bay Market, or Wynndel
Foods & Outdoor Gear.
Kootenay Lake Angler Incentive Program is managed by
the local West Arm Outdoors Club with support from B.C.
Wildlife Federation, Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC,
Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, Ministry of Forests,
Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development,
and several local merchants from around Kootenay Lake.
The Ministry urges anglers to continue to participate in this
program and harvest all of their catch within daily quota limits
to support the recovery of Kootenay Lake’s kokanee salmon.
