Midway through February 2023 and the 1of1 space seems to be going through a 'lull'. There are days where
you can almost hear the crickets. Curating NFTs for this issue was a bit of a challenge when sifting through FF
and ExchgArt using NEWEST as the filter and being met with the same NFT day after day. Then, along comes
#DAMZINE with their #DamPFP theme for the month to save the day!
A fair amount of articles across the magazine this week with articles from newcomers, including:
Tiensuperman, illustriousboy, sol_nxxn and TycoonPal who have never been featured in #SHILLzine previously.
A little insight into the recently launched "Soltoshis" project and where they are going. An 'expose' on Solana
Rugs, by TycoonPal, that must have touched a good proportion of Solana users out there- some of these are
alive and kicking, where's the money? The Particles team hits us with another 'focus-on' the artist xDaylon. All
in all enough reading to keep you flicking through the magazine for the week!
And then there's the NFTs! A bunch of 'editions' NFTs that should catch your attention. Especially if you're
looking to get into the scene on the more thrifty side! A whole section of 1of1 pieces and, of course, the
DamPFP offering that is about to hit the marketplace. Over 100 NFTs to peruse, select, bid on, or buy.
All of this in a convenient 174 page magazine that you can access any time.
A special shout out to Alexandredesane whose piece graces our cover this week. Adesane has been working
his photography craft on Solana since 2022 with his particular style. Some weeks he hits the mark with
great interest drawn to his work. Other weeks he just continues to grind. This week, his shot on the streets
somewhere in France caught my eye and I just had to give it front cover honours. Do yourself a favour and
have a closer look at his work on ExchgArt and FF- his photos are meaningful, original, and definitely an insight
into the human condition.
Finally, as you flick through the pages, your eye may have caught a NEW logo sitting proudly next to the
#SHILLzine logo. I believe fresh content and a new slew of readers is about to be welcomed to this magazine.

Aurory, the upcoming online gaming platform, has announced the release of a new game mode

community predicted that it will be a rug. Proof that NFT traders will buy anything even if they know that it’s a rug, only

When @xdaylon set out to release a PFP series back in January 2022, his wanted to create something unique. In
a sea of generative apes and other critters, ‘Chain Walkers’ stood out and inadvertently established itself as an
OG 1/1 PFP series on Solana.

With an art journey that began in 6th grade, @xdaylon began to explore his creativity through music, traditional art and
3D modelling. In college he started to take on commissions from gaming communities, and he was soon introduced to
the NFT world for the first time.
Once he got his hands on a tablet, @xdaylon quickly discovered digital art and became obsessed. With the effects on
society and the isolation that came with the Covid pandemic, he begun to explore themes he describes as ‘beautiful
nightmares’.

This drive to create beautiful paintings, only to paint nightmarish scenes over the top of them, was carried over to the
‘Chain Walker’ series. In doing so, @xdaylon has established a style and PFP series which instantly recognisable and is
truly his own.

This Week we look at the most recent metrics on Solana DeFi.
At the time of writing, the Solana market cap is $7.8 billion with a 24-hour volume of $800 million. The price of SOL
is $20.93 and its market dominance is 0.77%. The Total Crypto Market Cap is $1.02T, down 4.2% in the last 24 hours.

Introduction
In our last State of DeFi piece, we covered the BONK rise to fame. Almost one month later, we will cover data suggesting
a different picture. Although certain metrics such as TVL have not yet shown a complete recovery, others are signaling a
comeback in DeFi, which counters the narrative that the downfall of SBF and Alameda/FTX ruined Solana DeFi forever.
Data shows that the sentiment around Solana has considerably improved since January 1st. In addition to a revival of the
Solana DeFi and NFT ecosystem, the overall sentiment in Crypto shifted from panic to greed in January, fuelling a broad
rally in most crypto assets.
Today we will dive into the current State of Solana DeFi with the latest on-chain data and the most relevant news of the
week.

Token Price
Like most major cryptocurrency assets, Solana went through a period of increased volatility to the upside, following the
momentum from its bounce off the $8.00 lows.
It reached its highest point at $26.80 and has since been ranging in the $20.00 to $26.00 area.

Total Value Locked (TVL)
While December was a tough period for Solana, January was the consolidation. TVL has been rather stagnant monthover-month,
as DeFi seems to struggle with retaining users and investments.
It hit a monthly high of $285M on December 26th, and a monthly low of $242M on January 11th.

However, BEN SPARANG◎ (@bennybitcoins), the Head of Strategic BD of the Solana Foundation, took a different approach
to interpret TVL. By introducing on-chain volume to the TVL data, @bennybitcoins calculated “DeFi Velocity”,
which paints a different picture.
Although the Solana DeFi ecosystem has been through a lot of hardship over the last quarter, it still remains the most
actively used on a DeFi Velocity basis, as introduced by @bennybitcoins. On a 7-day volume, Solana has a score of 1.83
while ETH has a score of 0.43.

In the following chart, I took the top chains by reported TVL from @Defillamma as well as their reported 24hr / 7-day
reported volumes I then calculated their “DeFi Velocity” (volume per dollar of TVL)
DEX Volume
In December, the volume of decentralized exchanges (DEXs) on Solana was at its lowest point since May 2022, largely
due to the impact of the FTX crash on several prominent DeFi projects.
On the other hand, January was the second biggest month by Volume in the last 12 months. Market sentiment, Solana
confidence recovery, memecoin madness, and founders doubling down on the chain, all contributed to a rally on all
metrics.
In January 2023, volume reached $1.93B, almost four times higher than the previous month.

Daily Active Addresses
The Solana Daily Active Addresses chart shows the daily number of unique addresses that were active on the network
as a sender or receiver.
The daily active addresses decreased around 28% month-over-month (MoM), from ~610K to ~434K. Solana had its
biggest day of the month on January 11th, with almost 644K active addresses in a single day. For reference, Polygon and
Ethereum Active Addresses grew -38% and 4.5%, respectively, in the same period.

Drill-Down to the Protocol Level
Data suggests that the BONK airdrop has brought the NFT community closer to DeFi.
Since its peak, the majority of dApps show a steady reduction in Daily Active Addresses, although activity remains higher
than pre-BONK levels.
Data shows that Jupiter Aggregator, Orca, and Raydium are the most used protocols for decentralized trading.

DeFi Majors Market Cap & Growth
The FTX bankruptcy is still present in everyone’s minds. However, data shows that January brought a recovery of trust
and confidence in the Solana ecosystem.

Orca is processing the most volume on a daily basis, having reached $138M in volume in the last 7 days, followed by
Raydium and Lifinity.

Priority Fees
The use of priority fees on Solana has become a popular topic due to the now distant FTX crash and increased activity on
the network.
Many users have turned to this practice as a result of the memecoin boom, which led several Solana DEXs to update
their user interfaces and include the option to set priority fees.
This is necessary due to the high level of congestion on the network, which causes normal fee transactions to fail multiple
times. The widespread adoption of priority fees is a positive sign of network strength, adoption, and appeal, particularly
in a bear market.
Data shows a solid increase in priority fees, from 20% to 50% of the total non-voting transactions.

Conclusion
On-Chain data shows that although the DeFi ecosystem is still a long way from a full recovery, the wounds are starting to
heal. In addition, both NFT and DeFi projects are finding new ways of integrating the best of each other into innovative
products for the Solana ecosystem.

A few people have asked for my opinion on this topic. Here are a few of my brief thoughts:
Centralization vs Decentralization
Centralization refers to a practice in which ALL policies, decisions and activities are controlled by a
central organization, in order to achieve their goals.
It’s pretty much Web2 standard. We’ve all worked under a CEO, for example.
Decentralization challenges the previous model by transferring this control to several entities or
persons, rather than one.
Ideally, this distribution of control drastically evens the playing field; empowering silenced voices
to finally be heard, while increasing transparency.
So, what’s an NFT?
An NFT is a unique digital object that represents ownership.
They are minted/backed through smart contracts that verify authenticity; eliminating the need
for third parties.
NFTs can be anything. Don’t overthink it.
Example:
How do you prove that you own the car you drive?
The answer is through Vehicle titles... AKA a piece of paper (that can be duplicated, fabricated, or
destroyed) ... serve as our means of proof of vehicle ownership.

The DMV, Bank, and dealership (third parties) provide you with the proper documentation
needed in order to legally drive and transact.
But what if... we purchased transparent, tamper-proof NFTs that certified ownership of vehicles?
This would make transactions infinitely easier whilst eliminating the need for third parties.
NFTs can be efficient to the point of total disruption. Trust me when I say some very powerful
people understand this concept fairly well. That is why Decentralizations scare banks,
governments and corporate structures as a whole.
We’ve barely tapped into this potential.
Centralized Leadership
Now, let’s look at the current state of Solana.
Yesterday, Hadeswap acquired Solana Monkey Business. For context: The original devs rugged the
project and it was taken over by MonkeDAO. The problem is that the OG devs still had ownership
of the collection, as well as access to royalties.
You probably know this already. No doubt, HGE has done a lot for Solana. But what are the
implications of this acquisition?

I’m not saying this is good or bad.
But, with two top projects underneath a more centralized leadership (that is still not audited), I
have concerns.

So what’s next for Solana NFTs ?
Once again:
If we are strictly going off definitions, the acquisition does indeed make the project feel much
more centralized. This could go incredibly well or it could go very south. There are many
workarounds, so overall; I’ll remain hopeful.
Programmable NFTs (pNFTs)
Metaplex will allow collections to upgrade to ‘Programmable NFTs’ with royalty enforcement and
protection. But it’s so much deeper than that.
pNFTs are “frozen” until conditions set by projects and/or Metaplex are met.
Immutable Edge @ImmutableSOL
pNFTs = “An always-frozen NFT”,.... until specific conditions set by the project or Metaplex are met. pNFTs mandate that
all actions taken on the NFT must be done through Token Metadata controlled by @metaplex
I have nothing against Metaplex. In fact, from a tech standpoint, I find pNFTs to be quite
fascinating. But my take is that pNFTs are not NFTs.
For NFTs to be truly decentralized, they must be immutable (unable to be changed). If not, they
are no different than the centralized standards and third-party interjections that we already have
in Web2.
The Verdict
Personally, I do think Solana NFTs are moving in a more centralized direction.
The domino effect that started with 0% royalty campaigns, alongside the emergence of NFT
AMMs was… simply unavoidable.
