DAN WHITLEY ~ EDWARD JONES

I moved to Fredericksburg in 2012 after transitioning out of the U.S. Army, where I was a

Blackhawk Helicopter Crewchief. I still serve one weekend each month in the U.S. Air National

Guard as an F-16 Crewchief. Our city is a wonderful place to raise a family and you may see

me on some of our biking trails, at a local BBQ restaurant or at an ice cream shop downtown

with my wife and three daughters. I am passionate about taking the opportunity to really make

a difference in the lives of the local families and small business owners I work with by taking

the time to listen and find out what is truly important to them. We use an established process

and partner together throughout life to help meet your long-term financial goals.

just two weeks a year. Tour the St. James’ House

decorative arts. Be sure to stroll the handsome

was originally home to James Mercer, an

attorney. Mercer was a member of the Virginia

House of Burgesses, the first judge of the

General Court in Fredericksburg, and the

attorney who drew up the will of Mary

Washington, mother of George Washington.

Mercer built the house on land once owned by

Fielding Lewis, brother-in-law of George

Washington. The house is particularly noted for

its fine collection of antique furniture and

decorative arts acquired by Daniel Breslin and

William Tolerton who, together, restored St.

James’ in the mid-1960s and eventually

bequeathed it to Preservation Virginia.

Washington Heritage Museums then received

the property and its collections by deed of gift in

2012. St. James’ House serves as the

By Jenna Elizabeth Edwards

The Garden Club of Virginia’s Historic Garden Week – an enduring

emblem of spring in the Old Dominion – celebrates its 90th anniversary April

15-22, 2023, with April 18, 2023 marking the showcase of historic King George

County within the Greater Fredericksburg region. You most certainly want to

mark your calendar and experience this venerated tradition, hailed as

“America’s Largest Open House” by publications including Virginia Living,

Garden & Gun, Veranda, and The Wall Street Journal.

As the country’s only statewide house and garden tour, Historic Garden

Week (HGW) draws nearly 26,000 visitors to approximately 30 Virginia

communities each spring and contributes significantly to state and regional

economies. HGW has generated a cumulative $518 million statewide impact

since 1969, according to a 2019 study by Chmura Analytics & Economics, with

the generous support of the Virginia Tourism Corporation and Bartlett Tree

Experts. The annual economic impact of HGW in Virginia is estimated to be

$12.5 million.

The Garden Club of Virginia (GCV), an active association of 48 garden

clubs with over 3,400 members, creates over one thousand floral

arrangements to enhance tour properties and dedicates the net proceeds

from its signature HGW event to the continued restoration and preservation of

Virginia’s historic public gardens and state parks, as well as to a research

fellowship program in landscape architecture. For more than a century, the

GCV has been the Commonwealth’s leading advocate for education and public

engagement on important environmental, conservation, and horticultural

initiatives.

The Garden Club of Virginia has a special history with Fredericksburg, as

its first landscape restoration project – Kenmore’s gardens – is said to have

inspired Virginia’s first Historic Garden Week in 1929, according to the George

Washington Foundation. The success of the Kenmore restoration launched the

Historic Garden Week as a vital annual event and has contributed to the

completion of nearly 50 GCV restoration projects to date.

The Rappahannock Valley Garden Club is delighted to showcase King

George County this spring, after the 2020 tours coinciding with the county’s

tricentennial celebration were sadly canceled due to COVID. That occasion

marked the only time HGW has been canceled, excepting once during World

War II.

Historic Garden Day 2023 is entitled “King George Unveiled: History,

Horticulture, and Homes” and will feature meticulously-restored 18th century

dwellings and their landscapes combined with graciously-designed modern

properties. Ancient outbuildings and boxwood parterres, sweeping terraced gardens, picturesque equestrian

amenities and old churchyards enhance the breathtaking beauty of this Rappahannock Valley tour.

A unique addition will be the inclusion of educational opportunities for novice and seasoned gardeners.

Cedell Brooks, Jr. Park will serve as the tour headquarters and country garden, where Central Rappahannock

Extension Master Gardeners will host tours of the native plant demonstration gardens, as well as provide

seeds, soil test kits, and educational materials. The King George Garden Clubs will host plant sales; Gateway

Bees will be on-site sharing information and selling honey; and for the first time during HGW, visitors can enjoy

a “pop-up” tulip picking garden, featuring over 12,000 tulips generously donated by Bloomia.

The success of Historic Garden Week would not be possible without the generosity of participating

homeowners and volunteers, as well as community partners.

“Historic Garden Week is a community-wide initiative that highlights the very best the area has to offer in

terms of its rich history, gorgeous landscapes, and enthusiastic, engaged community,” says Erma Baker,

Rappahannock Valley Garden Club HGW Tour Chair, “King George County has been a tremendous tour

partner and we are thrilled to highlight its beauty.”

WILD BIRDS UNLIMITED

Nest Wishes

Do more than just wish bird families the

best this nesting season. Give them the best

possible nesting nutrition with Nesting

SuperBlend. This high-protein blend with

added calcium is designed specifically for birds’

nesting and molting needs. It is perfect for birds

preparing to nest, while they nest and for the

young when they leave the nest.

When preparing to raise a family, the need

for protein and calcium significantly increases

for bird moms. A sufficient amount of protein

and calcium helps determine the number of

eggs she produces and positively impacts the

growth rate and health of young birds.

Young birds need calcium, protein and fat

among other nutrients while growing.

Most dietary calcium in young birds

is used for the formation of bone

production. Calcium is the most

challenging mineral for birds

because when they need calcium

they need a lot of it and they need

it right now. Besides the increased need, many

natural foods are often calcium deficient. The

added calcium of Nesting SuperBlend helps

fulfill this need.

As the nestlings grow, the high-protein

content is crucial for muscle and feather

development. Protein requirements are highest

for a bird until they reach their adult size and

weight. This often happens after they have

fledged from the nest.

After nesting, this high-protein blend

supports birds’ feather health. Young birds are

still growing out their feathers. Adult birds are

starting to molt all their feathers. Since feathers

are made up of over 90% protein, a highprotein

diet is a crucial from mid- to latesummer

for our backyard visitors.

Invite birds to successfully raise

families in your backyard with the

best nesting wishes and nutrition

in Nesting SuperBlend. See our ad

and coupon on page 37.

Memorial Day is more than a day off

from work or school and an opportunity to

grill hamburgers and hot dogs. It is a day set

aside to honor those brave Americans who

made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our

Country, so that We the People may enjoy

the liberties we hold so dear.

National Park Service Officials in

Fredericksburg developed the Annual

Luminaria program to honor American

soldiers who died in service to our Country.

The National Park Service (NPS)

enthusiastically embraced the idea, and the

Fredericksburg National Cemetery

Luminaria was born. Hundreds of Scouts and

volunteers gather on Memorial Day

weekend to assemble and place luminary

bags and American flags beside each grave

marker.

This year, the 28th Annual Luminaria will

take place on Saturday May 27, 2023. Scouts

from the Aquia and Mattaponi Districts will

prepare, place and light approximately

17,000 luminaries in and around the 12-acre

Fredericksburg National Cemetery, honoring

the 15,300 soldiers buried there; Most were

killed in battles around the City of

Fredericksburg, the Wilderness,

Chancellorsville and Spotsylvania.

As darkness settles over the Cemetery,

Scouts light candles that illuminate the

hillside. Visitors walk among the graves,

pausing to listen as Park Rangers and

Volunteers explain aspects of the Cemetery’s

history. Every thirty minutes “Taps” is blown;

its mournful tones reminding Americans of

the sacrifices made by others to secure our

freedoms.

The Luminaria is a stirring and solemn

tribute to America’s fallen heroes. Please

come witness this memorable event open

free to the public at 8 PM at 1013 Lafayette

Blvd, Fredericksburg. Parking available at

The Nap and The Flat Lunch

by Henry Michaloski

I rested in the grass beside my house

and I spied taking a nap was a furry little mouse.

Under a toadstool it slept in the shade.

I dare not stir, not a sound I made.

Its eyes firmly shut, dreaming beneath the willow

Barely moving, with an acorn cap for a pillow.

It must be an easy life for a mouse in the wild.

Few cares and food all around.

Only needs to watch for the fox and the owl.

Which can chase without making a sound.

I dozed off myself so quiet on the lawn.

Just me and my little sleeping friend.

A beautiful day since the earliest of dawn.

I wished it would just never end.

We snored in unison like an operatic duet.

As butterflies alit in the flowers nearby.

Enjoying our daydreams as the shadows would set.

And nary a cloud in the sky.

Just then out of the blue, the mouse began to stir,

awakened by the shading leaves in the sudden breeze,

It angrily brushed out it fur.

Then with no word spoken, the peace was broken.

The mouse unsettled became,

the whiskers stiffened, his eyes became angry with fire, the tail grew sharp.

What did I say? What did I do?

My conscience did enquire,

What changed the mouse’s cute little nap?

It raced to my face, gave my nose a squeeze.

“Roll over you big fellow!” it exclaimed.

“You’re laying on my cheese!”

FREDERICKSBURG’S

CEMETERY GATE

By Erik F. Nelson

The Fredericksburg Cemetery gate,

along William Street, sits high above the

street, entirely unusable. Across the street is

a house that requires a set of front steps that

rivals what one might see in San Francisco

or New York. The road has clearly been

lowered, but it wasn’t the City of

Fredericksburg or the Highway Department.

To know what happened, we need to go

back before the Civil War.

In the 1830s, 40s, and 50s,

Fredericksburg experienced a surge of

ecclesiastical construction. In 1833, the

Presbyterian Church built its sanctuary at

the corner of George and Princess Anne

Streets. Diagonally across that intersection

was the town’s original parish lot,

designated as such by the Virginia House of

Burgesses in 1728. The American Revolution

freed the Anglican Church from the British

Crown and the town’s well-established, but

now independent episcopal parish replaced

an earlier church with the current St.

George’s sanctuary in 1849. The

Fredericksburg Baptist Church moved from

its original Sophia Street location and

erected a new church at the corner of Amelia

and Princess Anne Street in 1854-55. The

Fredericksburg United Methodist Church

had constructed its sanctuary just west of

Princess Anne Street, on Hanover Street.

The common denominator in all these

church sites is that they sit on a plateau well

above any potential river flooding. As

Fredericksburg residents know, the

Rappahannock River has inundated Sophia

and Caroline Streets, but has never reached

that third street in from the river. Not

40

surprisingly, the town’s government

buildings also gravitated to that high

ground. The old town hall, in the same block

as the St. George’s Parish lot, stood on

Caroline Street, connected to the church lot

by the Market Square. The community

relocated its town hall to Princess Anne

Street around 1816.

In the early 1840s, these four churches

created the Fredericksburg Cemetery

Company. A new burying ground would be

on the western edge of the plateau where

their churches were located or were planned

to be built. Funeral routes between the

churches and the new cemetery would be

just a few blocks on level ground. The

company acquired a three-acre site in 1844

and built a brick wall around it, to keep

animals away from the graves. The

Company also erected a Gothic-Revival

sandstone arch with iron gates to serve as

the entryway off William Street. That

architectural style had apparently captured

the attention of the community, which

would also define a new courthouse in 1852,

constructed on Princess Anne Street of

course.

The cemetery on the western edge of

town stood amidst a collection of wagon

yards and related facilities associated with

overland routes to the west. The rise of

prominent churches was clear proof of local

prosperity, but Fredericksburg had a fragile

economy. It competed with larger cities to

the north and south to be a transshipment

point for agricultural products and raw

materials coming out of the interior. The

Rappahannock Canal had been a potentially

lucrative connector but was failing by the

1850s. The Richmond, Fredericksburg &

Potomac Railroad pushed through town in

the 1830s, but it was a north-south link. The

Swift Run Gap Turnpike Company, formed

in 1810, struggled to reach the mountains.

By 1822, it had only pushed out as far as

Orange Court House.

In 1850, the Fredericksburg & Valley

Plank Road Company held promise for the

future. A wooden road surface would cost

less than macadam and probably last for at

least ten years. Local officials, however,

could not agree on its Fredericksburg

terminus. Those with property near the

town wharves wanted the road to go there.

Those with holdings on William Street

wanted it to extend to their properties and

business concerns. After a spate of

acrimonious legal and political maneuvers,

the William Street terminus won out.

Subsequent road construction, however,

lowered the grade on the final approach into

town. The levelled road accommodated tired

wagon teams, but local funerals had to

negotiate a narrowed approach to get

through the cemetery gate.

The access to the William Street gate

was greater than it is today but had become

an unacceptable challenge. The Cemetery

Company filed suit. The earlier legal

wrangling over transportation routes,

however, appear to have tried everyone’s

patience. In 1853, the parties were directed

to arbitration and the Plank Road Company

prevailed. The commercial entity was simply

required to shore up the embankment it had

created when it cut through the slope. Less

than a decade after establishing a new

cemetery, the participating churches were

left with a compromised entry gate. It has

been that way ever since.

On May 3, 1863, four regiments from

the Union Sixth Corps advanced in column

through this road cut. Their objective was

the high ground to the west, where the

A modern brick wall has replaced

whatever stabilization measures were

taken by the Plank Road Company. It

could use some drain holes, however,

to relieve the pressure that is causing it

to lean into the roadway.

The 1844 cemetery gate sits high

above William Street.

University of Mary Washington sits today.

Another column advanced simultaneously

on Hanover Street as did other forces north

and south of Hazel Run. This Federal assault

on a broad front took hundreds of casualties,

but also punched through the Confederate

line and pushed out to Salem Church. That

story, however, is for a future volume.

Erik Nelson was a planner with the City of

Fredericksburg for 32 years and is now a consulting

urbanologist. He holds a graduate degree in history

from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Unit Price Living

by John F. Gillespie, Jr.

As I reflect on this past year and look to the

future, I’m constantly evaluating how I do things. At

this time, you too, may be reviewing your life goals and

financial house. As such, I want to share a mindset

shift and introduce you to the idea of unit price living.

My hope is that this shift will aid you in getting better

results as you move forward into 2023 and beyond.

To move from only focusing on the cost of bulk

items and begin to look at the cost in time and money

for individual items. To give you an example of this

thinking, consider this. Recently, I purchased 100 trash bags for $20. That’s 20 cents a trash bag. In

my home, I have a recycle can and a regular trash can, each of them uses a bag. Previously, I would

take both bags to the dump. Now, my practice is to rotate the bags. On the first trip to the dump,

I throw away the trash and bag, I empty the recycling bag, and then use that plastic bag as my next

trash can bag.

What kind of impact does that have? Instead of 50 trips to the dump, I now have enough bags

for 99 trips! In essence, I’m getting 199 bag uses for that same one box containing 100 bags. By

changing my approach to a unit price living mindset, in essence the cost of those bags went from

20 cents each to just over 10 cents each. I got 199 bag uses for the same 20 dollars!

Reducing the money that you spend on items has a compounding effect because it's money

you've already been taxed on both as income and sales tax for the purchase. What is the cost of

an individual egg, banana, square of toilet paper, paper towel or cost of driving a mile in your

vehicle? We have been conditioned to look at overall costs by buying in bulk, but we don't always

understand the individual costs. It becomes harder to throw away or waste an item when you know

the individual cost.

So how do we apply this to the things that we do in life? How do we implement this new

approach when the cost is not as apparent? In this case, you assess the impact upon your finite

resource of time, which is considerably more valuable given that you only get about 30,000 days in

a lifetime.

I was recently painting a room with a traditional paint roller. The process consists of getting

the paint roller wet with paint, but not too wet, so as not to drip paint everywhere, then applying

the paint to the wall. This traditional process includes many repetitive motions, each taking about

15 seconds. Reflecting on this task and applying the unit price approach, I decided to purchase a

paint stick roller. The paint is drawn into the stick allowing me to paint 2 walls without having to

refill the stick. Filling the paint stick once takes the same amount of time as getting paint on the

traditional roller one time. Painting with the traditional roller took 8 to 10 iterations of applying

paint to complete just one wall. Painting a room with a roller and all the extra motions takes about

2 hours. Comparatively, using the $25 paint stick took me 20 minutes! Saving 100 minutes per

room is worth the $25 tool investment in this instance.

Get the most out of your time and money by adding mindfulness to every aspect of your life.

Get off of auto pilot and evaluate how you spend your time and money. I would love to hear ways

that you use the unit price process in your life.

includes access to support groups, private counseling, wellness activities, and food

assistance. As Vice President of the Ruyts Foundation, I have witnessed firsthand the

generosity and willingness of everyone here to help in any way they can. Most

recently, we have paid mortgages, purchased fuel to heat homes, provided food and

gifts during the holiday to hundreds, and given baby clothes, formula, and other items

to families of Veterans who lost their battle. We have LCSWs who volunteer their time

to counsel and help navigate Veteran services short-term and long-term.

If you want to volunteer, please get in touch with Ruyts Foundation

at info@ruytsfoundation.org.

Please join us at our Annual Race to End Vet Suicide & Heroes Fest -IGY6

The number of Veteran deaths by suicide is on the rise. Every single day, 40-44 Vets

take their own life. Please help us on our mission to end this devastating statistic

WINERIES & BREWERIES

C

1781 BREWING CO.

Our Mission to create truly distinct farmhouse ales

and lagers on our Virginia farm, Reap what you Sow,

sustainability at 1781 Brewing Co, means leaving

little to no trace and replacing our carbon footprint

in meaningful ways. We are continually listed as a

Corporation for Conservation by Ducks Unlimited

and other nonprofits. In 2017, 1781 Brewing Co.

contributed to help conserve over 248,000 acres of

wetlands which are the most at-risk ecological

systems. We also are involved in several USDA

environmental programs for wetlands and forest

and maintain 60 acres of deciduous forest and

buffer zones for the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. All

1781 Brewing Co.'s spent grains and brewery refuse

goes to either compost for our vegetable garden or

to another local farmer, Todd Schlund for his Pork

production.

WILDERNESS RUN VINEYARDS

Wilderness Run Vineyards began as a twinkle-in-theeye

of Robert and Denise Pagan as they looked

across the farm they had raised their family upon.

With the help of their son Harry and lifelong friend

Brandon (and many others), they started reclaiming

what were once dairy pastures and began planting

long rows of vines. After seeing the fruits of their

labor and all of the natural beauty of the property,

they decided what they had built must be shared.

Wilderness Run Vineyards has continually set goals

for the growth of the vineyard and farm. Every year

they have planted an average of an acre of new

grapes. The addition of 1781 Brewing Co. on the

farm has added to a variety of new beverage

options for patrons. The combination of vineyard

and brewery located on their historic property has

allowed them to holdfast to ethos; making the most

out of time with family, serving patrons as they are

our family and giving back to the community.
