Dixon-Searle is now ranked 

among the strongest men in 

Australasia. 

The 21-year-old finished second 

at the globally renowned 

weightlifting competition, 

Australia’s Strongest International 

Showdown, at Yapeen in central 

Victoria. 

“It was such a life-changing 

and humbling experience,” 

Dixon-Searle said. 

The competition pits some of 

the strongest men and women 

from across the world against 

each other to battle it out in five 

rigorous events: The Ukraine 

deadlift, overhead medley, frame

drag arm over arm, and atlas 

stone run.

on the world stage takes incredible 

discipline and endurance. I 

trained over six hours a day to 

achieve the elite strength needed

Crash Bash aims to keep drivers safe 

THE DANGERS of open roads 

and driving to the conditions are 

the focuses of this year’s Crash 

Bash programme. 

The Crash Bash road safety 

education programme is 

rolling out across Christchurch 

schools with the aim of keeping 

teenagers safe on the open road. 

The programme tours secondary 

schools as an interactive 

stage performance with actors 

from the Court Theatre. 

This year, Crash Bash 

celebrates its 30th year touring 

schools, with the focus on the 

dangers of open roads and 

driving to the conditions. The 

performance is targeted at Year 

11 to 13 students. 

“Poor handling and speed are 

our contributing factors in fatal 

crashes involving young drivers 

and many of these crashes occur 

on the open road. So that is 

why we have decided to make 

it a focus of this year’s Crash 

Bash,” said city council transport 

operations manager Stephen 

Wright. 

“We want 

young people to 

be aware of the 

risks that come 

with driving 

too fast and to 

understand that 

the choices they 

make when they

times more likely to be involved

the first six to twelve months of 

driving solo on their restricted 

licence than at any other time in 

their lives. 

“We want our young drivers 

to stay safe on the roads. Crash 

Bash will hopefully make them 

think about how they are driving 

and how they can avoid risky 

situations.” 

Crash Bash is funded by the 

city council and developed by the 

Court Theatre in collaboration 

with Canterbury Police.

I’m currently working towards 

my level 6 diploma in human 

performance at the New 

Zealand Institute of Sport.

to get the support I needed to 

meet literacy and numeracy 

standards, and turn my love for 

sport into a career. 

“I’m grateful to NZIS for 

supporting my education 

journey and sponsoring me to 

compete internationally.

THE SILENCE was broken at 

Fendalton Library as orchestral 

performers staged the first in 

series of interactive concerts. 

The Christchurch Symphony 

Orchestra has partnered with 

Christchurch City Libraries 

to perform 11 free concerts, 

especially aimed at children aged 

2-6. 

Their 45-minute concert in 

Fendalton last week featured a 

wind quartet, which combined 

song, dance and storytelling 

to entertain the young crowd.

head of programme development 

Selena Orwin believes the 

concerts are a great opportunity 

for young children to see 

orchestral instruments up close 

and join the musical fun. 

“We want to be as relevant 

as we can to the community 

and engage as many different 

types of people. 

“And concerts are not the 

only way of doing this. We 

love to get out and about in the 

community,” Orwin said. 

The CSO musicians will 

continue Music Trails with 

concerts at different libraries 

throughout the year.

A DOMINANT South Brighton 

claimed the top overall club title 

at the southern region surf life 

saving champs over the weekend. 

The club finished on 783 

points, ahead of Taylors Mistake 

in second (500 points) and 

Sumner in third (150) after the 

two-day event at New Brighton 

beach.

southern sports manager Luke 

Smith said South Brighton’s 

success in the beach events was 

a “point of difference” for the 

club. 

Rosie Falcous dominated 

the beach events for South 

Brighton, winning the under-17 

and under-19 beach flags and 

relay. 

The New Zealand Junior Black 

Fin also won the beach sprints at 

the under-19 and open level. 

South Brighton’s Skye Trist 

was once again a standout in the 

under-17 category, winning the 

board race, surf race, ski race, 

run swim run, and iron events, 

as well as four team and relay 

events. 

Her board rescue teammate, 

Matilda Nolan, also impressed 

over the two days. She was in the 

winning team in five events in 

both the under-17 and under-19 

categories, including the 

under-17 board rescue with Trist. 

Smith said the weekend was 

a “great event” in the lead-up to 

the TSB New Zealand surf life 

saving championships on 

March 9-12, also at New 

Brighton. 

“We had some really great 

conditions for an awesome 

weekend of competition at New 

Brighton,” Smith said. 

Waimairi finished on 126 

points in fourth place, while 

Brighton ended in seventh (68) 

and hosts New Brighton in 

thirteenth (24). 

The completion of the 

Canterbury surf life saving 

championships, where South 

Brighton leads the club points 

table, will take place this 

Friday with canoe racing.

As I write this, we are in a National 

State of Emergency in response to 

Cyclone Gabrielle, and rescue and 

clean up efforts are underway across 

the North Island. My thoughts are 

with all those affected by the extreme 

weather events of the past few weeks, 

especially those who have lost loved 

ones, homes, and livelihoods. 

We here in Canterbury have seen our 

fair share of tragedy, with the twelfth 

anniversary of the 2011 earthquake 

a poignant reminder this week of the 

devastation our city has seen. 

I know there will have been many here 

in Canterbury trying to get hold of 

loved ones cut off without reception. 

While emergency response teams 

worked as hard as they could to get 

communications back online, it has 

been an anxious time for a lot of us. 

Community organisations have moved 

quickly to provide flood relief and 

to support whānau and an all-of- 

Government response is already well 

underway. Our Government’s recent 

$11.5 million community support 

package will help to provide immediate 

relief for individuals, families, and 

households. 

In the coming weeks, we will have a 

better idea of what is needed where, 

but the initial response has been 

extraordinary. We will continue to 

support communities through this 

unprecedented event, as well as the 

recovery and rebuild. 

While the full impact of Cyclone 

Gabrielle is yet to be realised, we will 

get through this together. 

Finally, I’d like to acknowledge our 

emergency responders. They’ve 

put in the hard yards and put their 

lives on the line in the service of 

their communities. We all owe you 

enormous gratitude, thank you.

Making the most of the garden’s bounty 

Summer produce is 

in abundance at this 

time of year, but there’s 

no need to let it go 

to waste, writes the 

team at Love Food 

Hate Waste 

COURGETTES, tomatoes, corn, 

and stone fruits are a few of our 

favourite summer produce and at 

this time of the year they can be 

found readily available in stores, 

or your gardens may be full of 

ready-to-harvest produce. 

Make the most of these 

seasonal fruits and vegetables 

and turn them into delicious 

meals, tasty desserts or freeze or 

preserve them so you can enjoy 

them at any time of year. Here 

are some ideas: 

- Courgettes: Use as pizza 

topping; add into pasta or use 

as lasagne sheets; add to salads, 

risotto, and soups; make fritters, 

cake, ice cream, stuffed courgette, 

vegie bake, ratatouille, kebabs; 

grill on the bbq, or pickle. 

- Tomatoes: Make a salsa, 

stuffed tomatoes, pasta sauces, 

tomato sauce, or freeze to turn 

into a soup or to add to stews at 

another time. 

- Corn: Make fritters, corn 

ribs, succotash, soup or chowder, 

salad, cheesy corn, creamed 

corn, corn bread, add to stews 

and quiches, grill them to make 

elotes (grilled Mexican corn), 

or for a sweet dish make corn 

pudding. 

- Stone fruits: Turn into sweet 

or savoury sauces like peach 

sauce or cherry compote, make 

jam, preserve them, or enjoy in 

desserts such as pies, tarts, or a 

quick danish (see the recipe on 

this page). 

Late summer also means back 

to school and back to wondering 

how to make the most of the uneaten 

or half-eaten sandwiches, 

wraps, fruits, veges, or crackers 

brought home in lunch boxes. 

In many cases these foods can 

be saved so here are some of our 

ideas on what you can do: 

- Carrot sticks and corn 

cobs: If you are making a stir fry, 

stew, frittata, bolognese, or other 

mince dish for dinner add the 

veges in or save in a container or 

freezer bag and add to the meals 

another time. 

- Fruit: This can be frozen 

even if it is half eaten or has a 

few bites. Cut around the bitten 

area and cut into smaller pieces 

if needed and place in a freezer 

bag. Turn into smoothies, cakes, 

sorbets, or fruit filling for pies 

and crumbles. 

- Leftover sandwiches: Can 

be toasted in the sandwich press 

and eaten for dinner or as weekend 

lunch with soup. (However, 

if the original sandwich contained 

ham or chicken it is best 

not to keep them as the heat may 

have compromised their safety.) 

- Crackers: Save them and

place in a sealed container and 

once you have enough you can 

crush them and use them as you 

would use breadcrumbs. Stale 

crackers can also be revived by 

heating in the oven and they will 

be crisp again, ready to eat as 

they are. 

Quick peach danish 

Ingredients 

6 medium-sized peaches, thinly 

sliced 

¼ cup brown sugar 

2 Tbsp plain flour 

½ tsp cinnamon 

pinch of salt 

2 sheets puff pastry, thawed 

Optional 

¼ tsp nutmeg 

¼ cup sliced almonds 

1 egg, beaten 

Directions 

Heat the oven to 200degC 

(180degC fan bake), line a tray 

with baking paper or a baking 

mat. 

Mix sliced peaches, brown 

sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, 

and salt together in a bowl. 

Cut pastry sheet into nine 

squares, place on tray, brush 

with egg (if using). 

Arrange peach slices on the 

pastry, about four slices per 

pastry. Sprinkle sliced almonds 

on top. 

Bake for 15 minutes, reduce to 

180degC (160degC fan bake) and 

bake for a further 10 minutes. 

You may want to rotate the tray 

if it is browning unevenly. 

Once cooked, cool on the tray 

for five minutes then transfer to 

a wire rack. 

Tip: Try this with apples, 

nectarines, apricots, pears, or 

even pineapples.

NZ Real Estate Institute January Report | Year starts slowly

The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand’s 

(REINZ) January 2023 figures show house 

prices have declined but at a slower rate than 

seen previously. 

REINZ Chief Executive, Jen Baird says prices 

continue to ease but the pace of the decline is 

steadying, and the market has glimpses of a new 

life as January’s seasonally adjusted data shows. 

“January is traditionally a slower month as 

sellers and buyers are on holiday. This month is 

no exception, although intensified in Auckland 

by relatively poor weather, with the least 

number of sales since records began (excluding 

April 2020 during the country’s lockdown) at 

943 sales. The rest of the country has also seen 

a record low for the month with less than 3,000 

sales (2,759) nationally.” 

High interest rates, the ability to secure finance, 

commentary around a looming recession and 

this being election year can be added to factors 

for slow decision making from buyers. As a 

result, properties are spending longer on the 

market with 53 being the median days to sell 

for January 2023, 16 days longer compared to 

January 2022.” 

The median sale price has decreased nationally 

by 13.3% overall to $762,500 and decreased 

9.3% for New Zealand excluding Auckland to 

$679,000. The REINZ House Price Index (HPI) 

showed an annual decrease of 13.9% in the 

value of residential property nationwide which 

is in line with the sale price changes seen. 

Regional median house prices continue to 

decrease across the board, with Auckland 

dropping under $1,000,000 (to $940,000) in 

January 2023 for the first time in two years. 

The exception is three regions which saw 

marginal increases: Gisborne (+3.8%), Taranaki 

(+0.8%) and the West Coast (+5.3%). These 

were the only regions to see a rise in median 

price compared to January last year. 

Nationally new residential listings decreased 

16.0% year-on-year from 7,912 in January 

2022 to 6,646 in January 2023 and increase 

of 28.9 month on month from December 

2022. New Zealand excluding Auckland saw a 

decrease of 10.4% year on year from 5,512 in 

January 2022 to 4,635 new listings in January 

2023 and a 29.4% decrease from 3,381 listings 

month on month from December 2022. 

“The flip side to this is the seasonal effect 

of January. In seasonally adjusted terms, 

this month’s numbers show a January that 

performed better than expected. The sales 

counts are down for January 2023 compared 

to December 2022 for Auckland by 31.5%. 

When the seasonality is removed, the sales 

count numbers show Auckland performed 

19.4% better than expected when compared 

to December.” 

“Reports of more activity in the market are 

growing “Agents in many areas are reporting 

more attendance at open homes, more interest 

online and even more multi-offer situations. 

Inventory has increased 39.4% year-on 

year, now sitting at 27,732 properties which 

provides plenty of choice for buyers. Add to 

that prices that have eased over the last 12 

months, and some less bad economic news 

coming out recently, it seems there are more 

buyers active in the market. February and 

March data will tell us if they choose to act” 

adds Baird. 

“This is interesting data and does indicate a 

slowing of the decline. The coming months 

will be telling as the country braces for more 

activity both in the weather and the property 

market,” concludes Baird. 

“Salespeople around the country say owner 

occupiers remain active, and that there has 

been increased interest in out-of-town buyers 

looking in different regions. Sellers are tending 

to be more realistic and will usually meet the 

market through negotiation — however, many 

remain cautious with properties taking longer 

to sell, and investors sparse.”
