STUNNING
Subtle updates make for
an easy refresh
As the days continue to get longer and the temperatures slowly warmer, our
urge to spend more time outside grows as well. Spring is a time of renewal,
and for many that often includes decluttering, organizing and freshening
up our homes both inside and out. We have a few precious months to spend outside
before the bite of fall hits again. It’s paramount to enjoy these long warm days, and
there are several small improvements you can do both indoors and out to make this
summer even more enjoyable.
While yard work isn’t the top priority of most homeowners, simplifying your
landscaping will help limit the amount of time you spend weeding, raking, and
hauling lawn debris away in the future. Communities all across the West are asking
residents to conserve water. Droughts in the Southwest have strained watersheds, and
though the Northwest isn’t suffering the same shortages, water conservation is still
top of mind. Keeping a lawn and landscape green can take a tremendous amount of
water, especially in between rainstorms. Replacing your landscaping with droughtresistant
plants and grasses not only decreases your water use, but lowers your water
ill and, in some cases, can even qualify you
for a regional tax incentive.
There are many kinds of plants, tall and
short decorative grasses, as well as herbs and
ground cover that require much less water
to thrive. When planting, keep things close
together to help shade the soil and protect the
moisture barrier. Also, be sure to cover the
soil with porous rocks, or mulch. Professional
gardeners and landscapers in your area
will also be familiar with native plants to
specific regions and can offer more detailed
recommendations.
If you want to rid yourself of mowing entirely,
you might consider artificial turf. Materials
have come a long way since the spongy
bright green surfaces we most associate with
baseball and soccer fields. Today’s turf is
tailored to many situations depending on
use; everything from durable high traffic to
kids/pets, to decorative gardens. There are
three main materials used: nylon, which feels
most like natural grass but is not as durable;
polypropylene, which is highly durable but
does not have the same natural look as nylon;
or polyethylene, which has a more natural
look and is easier for pet clean-up and light
usage. While more expensive than sod, the
long-term water and time savings might just outweigh the upfront cost.
While still outside, you might also consider an outdoor dining area.
Those who enjoy their deck already might simply look to add
an updated table and seating or possibly a large sun shade
in order to enjoy the space during all conditions. Putting
in a single-level patio is also not as difficult or as long
of a project as it might seem. Choose whether you
want poured concrete, pavers, or a slightly elevated
deck with either wood or composite materials.
Contractors should be able to finish a job in less
than a week, and with careful planning, the
DIY crowd should be able to do the same over
a couple of weekends.
Inside the home, one of the easiest ways to
brighten and freshen up your look is to put a
new coat of paint on the walls. While color is
always a personal choice, dark and charcoal
grays as well as raspberry reds are a trending
favorite of designers in 2023. Vintage colors
from the ‘70s to early ‘80s, like mustard
yellows and pale greens, are also becoming
fashionable for those wanting a trendy and
bolder look.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by a cluttered shed
or garage, there are some simple steps you can
take to not only organize but create more space
and peace of mind. Generally speaking, the more
upright and off the ground your items are, the
more space you will have. Metal shelving is
easily installed with a couple of screws
into the stud. You can stack these
high to put less utilized
items like holiday
decorations up
and out of the
Tips for
NAVIGATING THIS HOUSING MARKET
As we approach spring 2023, the real estate market is beginning to stir from a slumber that began in
the summer of 2022. Although this is a typical seasonal pattern, mortgage rates are also starting to
gradually climb back into the 5% range. However, there are indications that rates could potentially
drop even further, possibly dipping into the high 4% range. As you navigate through the dynamic
real estate market, it’s crucial for your unique needs, objectives, and timeline to be carefully
considered and addressed.
My top recommendation is to hire a full-time local real estate expert who possesses
a deep understanding of the market and can create a personalized plan that caters
to your unique circumstances. If you are selling your property, it’s essential to
scrutinize the REALTOR®’s past listings’, their marketing strategies, services,
and also request their specific strategy for selling your home. For buyers, it’s
crucial to engage a real estate agent who actively listens to what you want,
has established connections with reputable lenders, title companies, and
vendors with a proven track record of working hard for others.
“Ben and Elite Realty Partners were professional, attentive and
knowledgeable on current market trends. Their work on getting
our house ready for sale was outstanding and first class. He
was always available and kept us informed of the negotiations
with potential buyers. I would highly recommend him.”
MANNY F., BONNERS FERRY
“Ben was wonderful and attentive to helping us sell our house.
Knowledgeable and committed to doing the very best at
marketing and preparing the sales process. Can’t say enough
about how fortunate we were to have him lead our sale.”
way. Vertical tool racks are also an easy way to keep your rakes, shovels and brooms upright, taking up as
little space as possible. You’ll be amazed at how much space you’ll save by putting in a wall-mounted bike
rack, and the tried-and-true peg board is an easy place to store and see small tools. Finally, tuck away kid toys,
decorations, seasonal goods, camping equipment, etc. in large plastic tubs and place them on your shelving.
Just be sure to label each.
While an entire home exterior paint job might be out of the budget, a few simple upgrades can also freshen up
your home’s curbside appearance. Start with a new mailbox, something that speaks to your personality. Next,
try updating your address numbers to something more modern. While you are at it, paint or stain the front
door. Finally, take your porch or garage lights to the next level with LED lighting, which can change colors
dependent on your mood or the season with a simple swipe of your phone.
While there is seemingly always some improvement we can make to our living spaces, summer is not the time
to get bogged down with a month’s long project. Give your home a small refresh this spring, and you’ll be ready
for an even more enjoyable summer.
Make an investment in your future.
Springtime in
Traditions to look forward to
by TAYLOR SHILLAM
Springtime in Bonners Ferry signals a change in seasons
worth celebrating, and there are plenty of ways to do so, from
the highly anticipated Bonners Ferry Rotary Easter Egg Hunt
to the start of Farmers Market season.
ROTARY CLUB OF BONNERS FERRY EASTER EGG HUNT
The annual Rotary Easter Egg Hunt has been kicking off the Easter
weekend in Bonners Ferry for years. Each year, on the Saturday
before Easter Sunday, children gather their Easter baskets and
bags, and bundle up for an event known to take place—rain or
shine. This year, the hunt begins promptly at 11am.
The tradition began decades ago with the Bonners Ferry Lions
Club and is now continued on by the Bonners Ferry Rotary.
Last year, over 120 dozen eggs were boiled and colored in the
days leading up to the event. Residents of the Restorium aid in
preparing the eggs for the event.
On Saturday, April 8, the egg hunt will be held in the parking lot
of the Boundary County Fairgrounds, located at 6567 Recreation
Park Road.
“We hide the eggs in different locations, depending on age factors,”
shares Glenda Poston of the Bonners Ferry Rotary. Participating
children will be divided into separate age brackets: ages 0 to 2, 3
to 4, 5 to 6, 7 to 8, and 9 to 10 years old. Parents are encouraged
to help their younger children under the age of 5 make their way
through the hunt.
Community support for the event has been consistent over the
years. “The rotary has held the egg hunt for the past four to five
years,” Glenda says, but the Bonners Ferry Lions Club started it
many years ago, probably 50 or more years.
The tradition began decades
ago with the Bonners
Ferry Lions Club and is now
continued on by the Bonners
Ferry Rotary.
18 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL march/april 2023
“It is so hard to determine the number of kids participating,
because kids are just kids and they are moving way too fast
to count,” Glenda says. Regardless, no child is left emptyhanded.
“We have a group of Rotarians and community
members that will help hide and ensure that all kids get
several eggs, approximately 20 people.”
Of course, the Easter Bunny will be in attendance.
“Like everyone else, we are concerned about eggs, so the
Easter Bunny will have some real eggs along with plastic eggs
for this year,” Glenda says. The concern lies in the ability to
get as many real eggs as they need. “We usually have well
over 2,000 eggs, and so there is concern about getting that
many eggs, hence the need for plastic eggs.”
One thing has been made clear within the decades-old event:
The egg hunt starts on time, and doesn't last long.
Glenda emphasizes the timely kickoff to the egg hunt. “I
encourage and stress that the hunt starts promptly at 11am,”
she shares. “Not five minutes late, but at 11am. It usually lasts
about 10 minutes, if that. These kids are fast.”
She encourages all who want to participate to show up at
least 15 minutes prior to the start time, “because we can’t
wait—or I should say, the kids don’t wait,” she says. “We
encourage all participants to find your marked-off area of the
hunt, bring a basket or plastic sack for the eggs, and when the
start time is announced to stand back, as it is all over in just
a few minutes.”
BONNERS FERRY FARMERS MARKET
CAROLINE WATSON
Bonners Ferry High School
Growing up in the year-round
sunshine of Southern California,
Caroline Watson never would
have imagined living in the
mountains of North Idaho, much less working
in secondary education.
"Honestly, I didn't actually pursue teaching as
a career, it kind of found me," Caroline said.
Yet, Caroline's unexpected journey to
becoming a PE teacher, yearbook advisor and
assistant volleyball coach at Bonners Ferry
High School (BFHS) has been full of blessings
along the way.
Caroline won a volleyball state championship
in high school and went on to play at the
University of San Francisco. At USF, Caroline
earned a bachelor’s degree in communication
studies and also met her husband, a Sandpoint,
Idaho, native.
After college, a chance encounter gave
Caroline an opportunity to begin her
coaching, and eventually teaching, career.
"One day while surfing, the former BYU
men's volleyball coach [Troy Tanner] had
recognized me from the volleyball community
and asked if I was interested in coaching
volleyball with him at this new high school —
[JSerra Catholic]," Caroline remembered.
Caroline agreed to give coaching a try, and
she also helped at the school by working as
a library assistant and tutoring students.
With some encouragement from JSerra's
principal at the time, Caroline decided to
get her teaching certificate from Long Beach
State University, and shortly thereafter took
a role as a PE teacher and JV boys and girls
volleyball coach.
Then, in 2010, Caroline and her husband
moved back to his hometown of Sandpoint.
That fall, Caroline began working at BFHS,
where she has taught for the last 13 years.
In addition to teaching PE, Caroline was also
hired to be the JV volleyball coach when she
arrived at BFHS. She coached alongside Janis
Tucker, a colleague and mentor who has made
a big impact in Caroline's life.
"[Janis] has not only been a mentor to me
in my teaching career but has also become
a close friend," Caroline said. "Janis is a true
example of a professional, intentional and
hardworking educator, coach and mentor."
Several years later, Caroline was approached
about becoming the school's yearbook
advisor. Despite having no previous
experience with yearbook, she has come to
relish the opportunities to connect with her
students that the new position affords her.
Caroline is the mother of three children under
the age of 8, who keep her busy and bring her
much joy.
"When I'm not working, I'm taking my kids to
soccer, baseball, wrestling, ballet, piano, etc.,"
Caroline said. "They are my life right now."

Students in the spotlight
SENIOR BASKETBALL PLAYERS by CHRISTIAN WEANER
Bonners Ferry Boys Basketball recently completed
its best season in program history, and the
team's five seniors—Braeden Blackmore, David
Hammons, Charles Henslee, Porter Schulte and
Ridge Williams—were a big reason why.
However, this success comes as no surprise to Badgers Head
Coach Nathan Williams, who has coached this group since
they were in elementary school.
"When the senior group was in fifth grade and the sophomore
group was in third grade, I saw a lot of athleticism, grit,
determination and fight in both groups," Nathan recalled.
"I remember telling them that if they stay away from girls,
drugs and alcohol, they will be state champions."
As the senior group developed over the years, one thing
Nathan said he noticed is how much they respect, trust and
genuinely care for one another.
"What truly makes my heart happy, and something I didn't
ask of them, is how they stand up and cheer for each other
on the bench," Nathan noted. "I don't ever see it because
I am focused on the game, but watching our highlights
brings so much joy to me when I witness their support for
one another."
Nathan first became the head coach for this group when
they were in middle school, and he was their coach ever
since. Each season, he constantly pushed them to be the
best basketball players they could be.
"I have been telling them since they were young that
everyone wants to win, everyone likes to win, but very few
are willing to put in the time and effort to win," Nathan
explained. "It is not easy to win, or everyone would do it.
This group has stuck it out, and I am so happy that it is
paying off for them."
After making appearances in the 3A State Tournament the
past two seasons, this year's team has had its sights set on a
deep playoff run since the beginning of the season.
"For me, it would be awesome to bring home a trophy and to
continue to make history with this group of seniors," Nathan
said. "They truly deserve it since they have worked so hard
in practice and the off-season for years to accomplish what
they are achieving."
Ultimately, regardless of how the season ends, Nathan's
desire is that the seniors will always be grateful for all they
accomplished during their high school careers.
"My hope is that one day they will look back on their
basketball season and have fond memories of their
teammates, coaches, and overall experience," Nathan said.
Each spring, since 1966, a group of young women
from Bonners Ferry are afforded the opportunity to
shine as they receive professional guidance, practice
valuable skills and gain one-of-a-kind experiences
through an inspiring national program—the Distinguished
Young Women (DYW) Scholarship Program.
“The program is open to all high school juniors
(homeschooled/alternative schools as well), so any girl in the
class of 2024 is welcome to participate,” states Andrakay Pluid,
chairman for Distinguished Young Women Bonners Ferry.
Those who choose to be involved in the program, which is free
to participate in and only requires that these young women
agree to a code of conduct that includes abiding by moral and
ethical principles, complete the registration paperwork, and
their journey to becoming the year’s Distinguished Young
Woman begins.
"Jurassic Quest” is the theme for the 2023 program, which
will take place at 6:30pm on Saturday, April 29, at the Bonners
Ferry High School’s Becker Auditorium. Tickets go on sale the
second week of April at Mountain Mike’s Health Food Store
in Bonners Ferry.
Each year, the DYW program typically awards $12,000 or
more in scholarships—funds that are raised entirely from
community donations—to be used for any educational
pursuit of the participant's choosing.
According to Andrakay, leading up to the April 29 program,
the selected participants will be busy practicing three nights
per week to learn routines for the on-stage presentation, for
which they will be judged in the following categories, with each
accounting for a percentage of their overall score: Interview
(25 percent), Scholastics (25 percent), Talent (20 percent),
Fitness (15 percent) and Self Expression (15 percent).
by JILLIAN CHANDLER
This year’s Distinguished Young Women participants are:
Avery Bayer, Braylyn Bayer, Shanlee Chaffin, Ana Chase,
Addy Heigel and Markynn Pluid.
“The participants will also participate in the Be Your Best
Self (BYBS) program, which is the community outreach and
service portion of the DYW program,” shares Andrakay,
“Throughout the program, DYW participants will mentor sixth-grade girls
For participants, the experience is sure to be life-changing, as they make
AN UNEXPECTED
OPPORTUNITY
Hope House's young new leadership
starts a new chapter for the
philanthropic organization
by CHRISTIAN WEANER
When Anna Pine began volunteering at Hope House back
in December 2021, she had no idea that less than a year
later, she and her husband, Eli, would be tasked with
running the organization.
Anna simply saw a need and was looking for a way that she could help
make a difference.
"[I realized] that there was a serious need in the community, and there
are many people that can't afford basic things like toilet paper, hygiene
products, even clothing," Anna explained. "I felt like I needed to do
something to help."
However, in the spring of 2022, when Hope House founder and director
Aimee Christopherson announced that she and her family would be
moving away, the organization—which has been serving Boundary
County for 15 years—was in jeopardy of closing its doors.
"If no one would have taken [Hope House] over after Aimee [moved],
it probably would have just shut down," Anna said. "I personally didn't
want to see that happen, so I talked to Eli."
After considering the time commitment and responsibilities of the
position for several months, Anna and Eli eventually agreed to take
over Hope House, officially beginning as the new directors in July 2022.
Under their leadership, the organization has held several successful
"Aimee put so much time and effort into this organization," Eli
explained. "And we just want to do it justice."
Hope House has been operating at its current location in Moyie Spring
since 2011.
The organization aims to help individuals and families by offering free
clothing, food, baby supplies and other household items that cannot be
purchased with food stamps. The organization is open every Friday and
Saturday with pickup times from 1 to 5pm.
In addition to their normal services, Hope House also sponsors several
special events throughout the year, like a winter clothing giveaway and,
most notably, the Back to School Bash barbeque and school supply
giveaway held every August at the fairgrounds.
In January, Hope House began a new weekly soup kitchen, which
offers free meals each Friday evening from 5:30 to 7pm at the Seniors
he was in high school, and this fall he was finally able to bring the idea
to fruition. This new project has been a big undertaking for Eli, who
plans the menu each month, purchases all the food and coordinates
the volunteers to prepare and serve it.
For Eli, raising awareness for Hope House and the resources the
organization provides, and seeing people's positive responses to the
soup kitchen, has been rewarding.
"I have had quite a few people come up to me saying that they really
appreciate getting a meal on Fridays and how much that has helped
them," Eli described. "Realizing that our efforts are being appreciated
and used [is rewarding]."
Hope House currently partners with the Community Action
public service entities like Boundary County Victim Services to make
connections and work together to provide individuals and families
with the resources they need.
"I'm trying to reach out to all the organizations because I know I can't
do it all," Eli noted. "The more people I have involved [with Hope
Anna and Eli were both excited and nervous at the opportunity to run
Hope House. They knew that the position would come with much
responsibility, but getting to encourage and help others is what the
couple enjoys the most.
"Seeing people being genuinely thankful for what we are doing and
knowing that we are making a difference in their lives is really huge,"
Anna said.
One year ago, neither Anna nor Eli could have predicted they would
be the directors of a nonprofit organization. However, today, they
are thankful for the unexpected opportunity to serve others through
Hope House.
"I feel like God called us to this, so I feel a sense of purpose through
The prospect of design updates
often brings visions of the family
and friends you’ll host and the
memories you’ll make in your
new space.
E
ach spring, new flower buds
emerge from the long-dormant
earth, basking the world in color
and sparking feelings of renewal, change
and fresh starts. Spring is nature’s gentle
way of shaking us awake after a period of
hibernation—inspiring and energizing us
with longer days and more sunlight. While
some opt for traditional spring cleaning,
others embrace the nudge offered by the
season change and choose to rejuvenate
their living spaces.
The prospect of design updates often brings
visions of the family and friends you’ll
host and the memories you’ll make in your
new space. As you start researching design
trends, it’s easy to get lost down the neverending
Pinterest rabbit hole. The countless
options and opinions can quickly become
overwhelming, causing major decision
paralysis. You want your space to feel like
it belongs in this decade (or century), but
trends can be fleeting, and any significant
changes need to withstand the test of time.
Your home is a personal space—it should be
a calm and comforting place that considers
your lifestyle and reflects what you like.
Connecting with the earth and bringing a
feeling of groundedness into your home is
reflected in the home design trends this year.
People are seeking stability and peace within
their homes, reaching for warm neutrals
with pops of rich colors, natural materials
and versatile pieces that make you feel safe,
comfortable and inspired.
A place we often start when considering a
home redesign is colors—and not just paint.
Wallpaper with bold patterns and textures
add visual interest to a myriad of surfaces
throughout the house. Colors affect our
mood, emotions and energy level, making
them an important factor in aesthetic and
overall vibe.
While neutrals have a timeless appeal,
people are ditching the cool white and gray
colors for creamy earth tones that give off
a homey feeling and warmer brown shades
that anchor the space and make us feel more
grounded. Sherwin Williams’ announced
their color of the year as Redend Point
(SW 9081)), a romantic warm neutral that
embodies all things cozy and tranquil.
march/april 2023 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL 35
MOSSY AND DEEP SHADES OF GREEN ARE ALMOST
CONSIDERED NEUTRAL FOR THEIR VERSATILITY.
Paired with creamier neutrals are bold colors that elicit a desired emotion from the space. Soothing greens, deep
blues and rich berry hues are taking center stage in 2023. Benjamin Moore chose a vibrant red-orange called
Raspberry Blush (2008-30) as their color of the year for 2023—this bold and refreshing hue energizes a room for
maximum impact. Mossy and deep shades of green are almost considered neutral for their versatility—used to
upgrade furniture and décor or make a bold wall color while balancing a room.
Bringing natural elements into your home means embracing the inconsistencies, imperfections and unique
beauty in raw, natural materials. Cookie-cutter design pieces from big-box stores made from synthetic materials
are being replaced with a newfound (or renewed) appreciation for durable, long-lasting organic materials.
Meaningfully investing in a few masterfully crafted pieces built for longevity is being more highly valued as
people want a story or connection to the items they keep in their homes.
One of the most beautiful and often underappreciated design materials is front and center: natural wood.
Furniture and design elements crafted from light- or mid-toned woods that lovingly embrace the natural artistry
of high-contrast grains add warmth and texture to a room. Think 1960’s and 1970’s rich mahogany end tables or
dark oak shelving. Even natural wood cabinets are making a comeback, mingling with natural stone to create a
mixed material kitchen. Integrate other wood touches with wooden-legged chairs, swap out picture frames for
wood versions, or display that one-of-a-kind wood carving you found in your grandma’s basement.
YOUR HOME SHOULD BE A PLACE WHERE YOU FEEL RELAXED.
The desire to feel more grounded and connected with the earth
means a shift from sterile white kitchens to natural materials,
whimsical colors, patterns and textures. Natural stone slabs for
kitchen countertops and backsplashes paired with dynamic colored
cabinets and warm wood accents are inviting and functional to an
area where families often congregate. While quartz remains a more
economical choice, colorful marbles, soapstone and limestone with
exaggerated, contrasting veining will become more prominent.
Not looking to do a complete overhaul? Swapping out your
backsplash, painting your island a vibrant hue, or even installing
a warm walnut butcher-block island makes a huge difference and
doesn’t require construction.
After all the change and chaos of the past several years, there’s a
general desire to reconnect with the things that really matter.
Mixing vintage pieces into your contemporary space elicits a sense
of nostalgic comfort and further personalizes your space. Adding
meaningful objects such as heirloom pieces or sentimental items
add character and depth to the space. Who doesn’t love a story
about the antique table your great uncle brought all the way from
Armenia? Pieces like these are part of your story and bring a sense
of history into your home.
look by thoughtfully picking out individual pieces that you love.
Peruse an antique store for treasures, and refurbish them to make
them your own. Or display unique trinkets, vases or sculptures
found while traveling. Vintage furniture, heirloom accessories and
one-of-a-kind, personalized pieces mix beautifully with modern
styles and are more sustainable than short-term, disposable items.
Combining antiques with a new, modern design can spark beloved
memories while honoring a bygone era and adding timeless
elegance to your space.
The architectural design and environment surrounding your
home can also help inspire your design. A French country interior
can feel out of place in a modern contemporary home, and a
mid-century modern style can feel conflicted in a coastal beach
house. Additionally, homes with ample shade from surrounding
evergreen trees may select light-reflecting colors to brighten the
interior. A home basking in warm, golden sunlight may need cool
colors to balance the bright warmth.
While these home design trends are things to consider, they
shouldn’t be the deciding factor. Your home should be a place
where you feel relaxed and content; somewhere that reflects who
you are and what you love.
Even if you don’t have familial heirloom items, you can create the
HEALING THROUGH NUTRITION
AND LIFESTYLE CHANGES
Off Grid Doc provides the personalized
care you deserve
By JILLIAN CHANDLER
40 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL march/april 2023
The Issas opened their practice—Off Grid Doc—and
started accepting new patients in June of 2021. Offering
direct primary care, medical weight-loss and metabolic
health programs, and one-time medical or metabolic
consultations, Off Grid Doc focuses on finding the root
cause rather than masking symptoms.
What makes Off Grid Doc truly unique is that it is a
membership-based practice. Patients pay an annual
membership fee, then all of their visits, as well as their
new patient labs, are included. “Because we do not
accept insurance, we are able to spend as much time as
necessary getting to the root of our patients’ medical
problems,” Dr. Issa states. “We are not limited to a 10- to
15-minute office visit. Our new patient visit and medical
or metabolic consultations are 90 minutes minimum.”
Their small practice, nestled in a home setting, allows
Dr. Issa to spend as much time as needed with each
one of his patients to give them the best quality of
care, and Off Grid Doc is available 24/7 to members of
their practice by phone, text and email. “Because of the
nature of our practice, we do not require our patients
to come into the office for every visit,” shares Celeste, who is the
office manager for their practice. “When appropriate, our patients
can take advantage of our telemedicine either by phone or a video
visit, which allows them to stay in the comfort of their home
when they are not feeling well, or weather does not cooperate. We
also offer house calls when needed.”
The inspiration behind opening this unique practice was very
personal to Dr. Issa. After his own father passed away from
obesity, diabetes and other metabolic-related health problems,
Dr. Issa looked at his own life and realized that if he didn’t do
something, he may not even live as long as his own father. Though
Dr. Issa had once been fit, physically active and ate a healthy diet,
he was devoting less time to his personal health. At the time of
his father’s death, Dr. Issa weighed 308 pounds and had many
health problems.
In May of 2017, he started thinking “outside the box” of medicine
that he had practiced with his patients and started implementing
in his own life—principles that changed the way he practiced
medicine and managed his own health. There was no surgical
procedure, special exotic supplement nor an expensive gym
membership. “I knew that because I wasn’t always overweight,
and my body wasn’t always sick, that my body could get better
by changing my lifestyle and nutrition,” he affirms. Over the next
100 days, Dr. Issa lost 94 pounds and transformed his health and
felt better than he had in years.
“Because of his natural love for teaching, Dr. Issa has developed
a simple plan for his patients to follow that will change their
life too,” smiles Celeste. “His general practice of medicine has
changed as well, and he no longer looks for a drug to prescribe
to fix your ailment but for why you have this ailment in the first
place and what could you change about your diet or lifestyle that
could actually fix it.”
“There are times when prescription medication may be necessary,
but we would prefer to find the root cause of the problem, and it
would be better than managing the symptoms with potentially
lifelong medication use,” Dr. Issa adds.
When it comes to what Dr. Issa finds most rewarding about the
work he does, it is “being able help our patients reverse medical
conditions like insulin resistance, diabetes, metabolic syndrome,
obesity, fatty liver, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and
help people reduce—or completely eliminate—the need for
medications for metabolic conditions.”
Having healed his own body, Dr. Issa has a passion to empower
his patients to reach their best health, and he continues to stay
on top of the latest research to help his patients reach their goals.
If you’re looking to take back your health and heal your body
through nutrition and lifestyle changes, all while receiving the
personalized care you deserve, Off Grid Doc is ready to lead you
on your journey to healing.
Gardening for your health
42 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL march/april 2023
Garden Grow?
by RACHEL KELLY
march/april 2023 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL 43
G
ardening is an investment in your well-being.
Vegetables, flowers, mushrooms, orchards or
trees … whatever is planted well will thrive.
And if it thrives, you thrive. The benefits of gardening are
numerous: from an increased sense of wellness to healthy
levels of vitamin D. The effort of gardening counts as
exercise and the product of gardening often leads to an
interest in eating healthier. No doubt about it, when you
get outside to plant, you harvest health. Also, planting a
garden is just beautiful. The scent of the apple blossoms
carried on the wind acts as aromatherapy. The sight of
green growing things encourages life under the ground
and above it, from worms to bees and butterflies. It’s no
wonder why we flock to forests, lakes and outdoor spaces
at all times of the year. Gardening makes those outdoor
spaces accessible just outside our door. Here are a few
ways your garden can promote your everyday health.
First, ask yourself, “How does my garden grow?” Yes,
it’s a children’s nursery rhyme, but it’s also a good rule
of thumb when planning out your garden. You want the
health benefits of your garden to last throughout the year,
so it’s important to consider which plants will bring you
the most joy. If you want the garden to benefit you every
day, year-around, you have to plant a garden that you find
sustainable. For some this means planting plants that seed
themselves. Examples of such plants include potatoes,
onions, anything in the mint family, evergreens, and a
huge variety of flowers. Self-seeding plants require very
little tilling and maintenance, and practically thrive on
their own.
Some gardens are made up of well-organized “weeds”
(by far the easiest sort of garden to grow), which are
exceptionally hardy in addition to being self-seeding.
When growing exceptionally boisterous plants, you might
consider planting in pots or plots. Examples include
anything in the dandelion family, mints, many herbs,
clover, sunchokes, and different grasses. Many of the herbs
and berries harvested for health benefits in the forests and
fields are considered “weeds.”
Another very practical approach to gardening for your
health means planting things that you enjoy eating, perhaps
things that you don’t always find fresh in the grocery store.
There’s no reason to become completely reliant upon your
garden, although it is nice to peruse the garden for dinner
rather than take a trip to the grocery store. However, the
more vegetables and fruits you plant, the more you will
find yourself branching out and enjoying things that you
didn’t know you liked. This often has to do with the very
real taste difference between fresh garden produce and
grocery store finds: Fresh is just better.
A vegetable garden is accessible, and it opens up doors
to produce and delicious foods that we might have not
previously had. This encourages us to make healthier
choices. An example would be the tomato. It’s relatively
easy to grow (make sure you plant the roots deep), and
its fruit is extremely abundant. When harvest time comes,
you will have basket after basket of tomatoes that are good
enough to eat plain, no adornment necessary. The excess
can be turned into sauce or salsa to be enjoyed all year.
Another example is the sugar snap pea, which during
the spring months is so abundant that you could gather
a basket daily from five plants. It’s also delicious without
any adornment or seasoning and full of protein, making
them a favorite for children on the go. Abundance will
The garden can be a place of privacy and rest, much like a mini
retreat. For this reason, you might want to plant according to
season, with something to enjoy in spring, summer, fall and
winter. For example, tulips and crocus will pop up every year
during spring, roses in summer and fall, and witch hazel in
winter.
It’s not important that the garden always be “practical” to be
a place of health. Growing a sense of well-being and safety
is not to be scoffed at, as the state of our mind contributes
considerably to our physical health. You might be inclined to
plant roses for their scent, mint because of its relaxing smell
in the bath, lavender because you like to cut the flowers for
the dinner table, or dahlias for their burst of color. There are
flowers that attract butterflies or hummingbirds, and plants
that simply provide greenery. There are a variety of trees that
do nothing for your plate but everything for lazy summer
days in your hammock. Whatever the reason, investing in a
garden is investing in your home and your health. And that is
an investment worth making.
Preventative Care is Self-Care
Put your health in your control
by DANIELLE LARSSON, BOUNDARY COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
Self-care. It’s the world’s latest favorite catchphrase. It seems
you can’t go anywhere without hearing or seeing it, and
honestly, out of all the phases our society goes through, I
hope this one is here to stay. The message is simple: You can’t
pour from an empty cup, so ensure you’re keeping yours full. For us
to effectively take care of others, we must first take care of ourselves.
Take care of yourself so that you can be healthy and happy, do your
job well, help and care for others, and do all the things you need and
want to accomplish in your typical day. Generally, when you think
of self-care, the things that immediately come to mind are: getting
a massage, working out, eating nutritious food, getting outside,
reading, and so on. All of those are very important to self-care, but
often what is missed is that preventative care is an instrumental part
of self-care.
Preventative care refers to tests and screenings performed to check
your health status so that you can make informed decisions on your
health and lifestyle. Preventive care includes regular physical exams
with your primary care provider (PCP), cholesterol and blood
pressure screening, eye exams, immunizations, cancer screenings,
and blood sugar levels.
Feeling anxious about screening labs and testing is natural, but taking
the time each year to go to your annual check-up puts your health
in your control. Getting a diagnosis, or ruling out a diagnosis, can
relieve your anxiety and provide reassurance that can be profoundly
helpful. Your PCP can help you identify risk factors through simple
blood tests, screening, and physical exams. Having that knowledge
allows you to mitigate your risk factors by making healthy lifestyle
changes or pursuing treatment recommended by your PCP. Early
detection allows for the best chance to cure or reduce the effects of a
disease. Knowledge is power; the sooner you have the information,
the better the opportunities for positive outcomes. You should not
wait for symptoms to be present.
There are different levels of prevention:
• Primordial Prevention: Pursuing a healthy lifestyle from birth.
For example, raising our children in a way that reduces exposure to
unsafe or unhealthy conditions, providing them with healthy food
choices while educating them on the importance of a well-balanced
diet and encouraging physical activity.
• Primary Prevention: To prevent a disease from ever occurring.
For example, immunizations.
• Secondary Prevention: This emphasizes early disease detection,
healthy-appearing individuals with subclinical forms of the disease.
For example, the beginning stages of a disease, with no apparent
symptoms, and detected through screenings.
Boundary Community Hospital and Boundary Community Clinics
are committed to providing the care our community needs. We are
proud to offer state-of-the-art laboratory equipment that allows inhouse
testing to be completed with results often in only a few hours.
Our Cardiopulmonary Department now offers echocardiograms,
stress tests, and pulmonary function testing. Our Diagnostic Imaging
Department is usually able to get you an appointment the same day
as requested and offers 3-D Mammography, 4-D Ultrasound, MRI,
CT scans, Diagnostic X-rays, and DXA Scans.
If you are ready to put your health in your control, you can schedule
an appointment with our new providers at 208.267.3655.
EASTER
TRADITIONS
DISCOVER THE MEANING OF EASTER AND
SOME OF ITS TRADITIONS
COURTESY ARTICLE
58 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL march/april 2023
As the arrival of Easter Sunday approaches on April 9 this year,
people all over the world are gearing up for one of the most
exciting celebrations of the year! This Christian holiday is
observed in almost 95 countries, with around 80 percent of the population
participating in the festivities.
Get ready for a feast for the senses as Easter Sunday comes alive with
vibrant colors, mouthwatering foods, and joyful traditions! From the
lively Easter egg hunts to the joyous visits with the Easter Bunny, this
holiday is full of delightful surprises and heartwarming moments.
For centuries, Easter Sunday has been celebrated as a tribute to the
resurrection of Jesus Christ. And as time has passed, numerous traditions
have emerged to mark this event, each with its own unique flare. Whether
you’re gathering with family or friends, there’s no doubt that the spirit of
Easter will fill the air, bringing people together with love, hope, and joy.
So, mark your calendars and join in the fun as we honor this sacred
holiday in our own special way. Let’s make this year’s Easter Sunday a day
to remember!
Sunrise Easter Service
One long-standing tradition is the sunrise Easter service, which dates
back to 1732 when the Moravian Church held the first service at dawn in
Germany. This practice honors the moment when Mary discovered Jesus’
tomb was empty early in the morning.
Ham/Lamb
Although the choice of what to serve for Easter dinner might come down
to taste preference, the menu holds great significance for some. In early
Jewish history, lambs were sacrificed as offerings to God and served
regularly as part of the Passover feast. Then, when Jesus died during
Passover, he represented the ultimate sacrifice for sin, the “lamb of God,”
so the animal evolved into a meaningful symbol for Christians. Many
Orthodox Christians still follow the Jewish Orthodox customs of not
eating any pork, so lamb takes center stage at their Easter meal.
The Easter Bunny and Easter Baskets
The Easter Bunny and Easter baskets are also popular Easter traditions
that have evolved over time. The Easter Bunny is believed to have
originated from ancient spring and fertility celebrations, while Easter
baskets may have originated with Middle Eastern farmers bringing
baskets of seedlings to be blessed for a successful harvest.
Hot Cross Buns
These festive rolls have their origins in ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece,
where they were considered symbols of honor for their goddesses.
Eventually, they gained popularity during Easter in England, where
bakers were restricted from selling spiced breads except on special
occasions such as the Friday before Easter.
Hot cross buns, baked on Good Friday, were believed by many English
people to never grow moldy and were therefore kept as good luck charms.
They accompanied sailors on voyages and were buried in piles of grain to
prevent rodents. Today, these buns mainly serve as a representation of the
Christian symbol of the cross.
Egg Tapping Game
The Easter tradition of egg tapping, also known as egg fighting, egg
knocking, egg pacqueing, egg boxing, egg picking or egg jarping, involves
two people tapping the pointed ends of eggs together until one cracks,
with the winner being the person who cracks the most eggs. This game
originated in Medieval Poland and is still played in many parts of the
world today. In Louisiana, the town of Marksville holds an annual official
egg-tapping competition with stringent rules and regulations, and
winners must demonstrate that their eggs are real by cracking and eating
Arrive red-carpet style via private plane from Honolulu to Lāna‘i. Concierge
transfers from Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport to Lāna‘i is
included with your reservation at Sensei Lāna‘i. Four Seasons’ staff members will
accompany you every step of the way, beginning with a 35-minute flight to Lāna‘i
on Lāna‘i Air, then transporting you to the resort—about a 10-minute drive from
the airport.
A retreat that fills the senses and a getaway where dreams become a reality, your
lavish stay at Sensei Lāna‘i, A Four Seasons Resort starts with a welcome upon
arrival that puts you in relaxation mode from the start. You won’t help but notice
the Cook pines lining your path to the resort, purposely planted to give you a sense
of belonging.
Make sure you take advantage of the wellness team of practitioners to learn new
techniques for a better you! Tailor-made fitness with Biomarkers, nutritionists and
meditation sessions are all at your fingertips! You will receive your itinerary for
your carefully planned stay. Do as little or as much as you desire!
Allow the personalized experiences menu to help guide you to a path of well-being
and a journey that deepens your connection to your health goals and intentions.
Your balanced itinerary should include a wide variety: Choose a spa treatment,
one of the fun on-site activities that interests you, an excursion, and a visit with
the health practitioner team members. Personally, you will see that co-founder
Dr. David Agus has given his expert touch on helping people discover ways to
a healthier existence. The techniques and information that were shared with me
about my own health were astonishing! Access these keys to a better way of life.
Explore the plentiful avocations on this expansive property that culminates land,
water and sky with hues of blues you have never seen. Some of my favorites: Wander
amidst the onsen garden pathways with beautiful streams and small bridgeways,
and soak in one of the 10 private tubs tucked into the garden hideaways. A favorite
discovery! Definitely observe the outdoor art collection and unique sculpture
displays. Swim laps or take a leisurely dip in the larger pool with an oasis of tropical
plants and trees that surround the pool deck. Having a quiet moment poolside
isn’t a bad choice either. Lounge chairs are conveniently tucked away to give you
privacy. To the Spa! Private massage hales are separate buildings for just you and
feature 1,000 square feet of bliss to extend your spa treatment. Enjoy a soaking
tub, rain shower, sauna, outside pools and streams after your massage. Top of the
list: Reflexology and Lomi Lomi. Amazing health benefits and de-stress activators.
Retreat for the Yogi ~ Restorative Aerial Yoga was another favorite; you may also
enjoy morning meditation and Sensei Yoga Flow.
If you’re looking for adventure, there’s the fun and freeing zip line, where you’ll
ride high amongst the trees and take in the view! Challenge your mind and body
with the ropes course while honing in on teamwork and problem-solving skills.
This is a super unique course designed on a moat. Welcome the day with a hike on
the Koloiki Ridge and bask in the beauty on this 4.9-mile journey to panoramic
views of Maui and Moloka`i. You’ll feel invigorated and appreciate the gifts of
movement and mother nature. If horses are your passion, check out the equestrian
experience. Riding or viewing these beautiful animals in the green pasture during
sunrise can be quite an experience as well as a magical photographer moment.
