Her ex and her teenage son both have strong alibies,
“In no particular order, being a kick-ass
mom, avoiding premature wrinkles
and creating a bridal studio where our
client’s expectations are consistently
exceeded... These are the things that
motivate and inspire everything I do at
home and behind the scenes.”
She says her wedding was a whirlwind
romance, they met through a mutual
friend in July of 2012 and tied the knot
in an intimate ceremony on the beach
in Mauritius in December of that
same year. “I think everything was
exactly as it was supposed to be at that
moment. If I had to change something
I would have loved a South-African
photographer, we have some of the best
in the world but all things considered, it
was perfect.”
She goes on to explain that they say you
cry when you move to Bloemfontein,
and you cry when you leave. “This could
not have been truer for me. When I first
moved here I cried almost every day
for a year but now I can’t imagine living
anywhere else. Bloemfontein is the
perfect big city with small-town values,
incredible schools, incredible people, and
we even have a Starbucks!”
“I would like to say the stars aligned
and the industry chose me, but it took
a few years of working in corporate, a
relocation, and some introspection.” She
worked as a bridal consultant initially,
but then she attended her first
bridal show in Amsterdam
and her passion for bridal
gowns and ‘stroopwafels’
just took off. It was like
fuel to my flame and I
have never looked back.”
Karlien says that Bridal has
been her baby for the last
eight years. “We specialise
in bringing the best the
international bridal industry
has to offer to our bride’s
doorstep. There is something
incredible about having a
bride walk in, opening her
eyes to silhouettes and
styles she never thought she
could wear, to play a part in
arlien
Jonker
living her childhood dream
Karlien Jonker, owner of Bridal Emporium –
an exclusive bridal boutique in the heart of the
Free State, says that she arrived in the City of
Roses having followed the love of her life.
building that confidence, it’s beautiful
and inspiring.”
On the question of what inspires her:
“At the risk of sounding extremely
cheesy, life. Life is worth celebrating.
The good and the bad. The failures and
the success stories. Realising it is not
a given, it is not a guarantee so I try
to celebrate every new arrival in store,
every school pick-up, every dinner at
home, every morning coffee with my
husband, every moment of growth
with my team, absolutely everything
is worth celebrating. Even your daily
steps.”
She also has to attend international
bridal shows in the fashion capitals of
the world a few times a year. “It is tough,
but someone has to do it,” she jokes.
Karlien says she chooses a new
wedding dress every week with all the
new arrivals in store; “It’s completely
normal to do an annual vowel renewal
right?” But what is important to
remember is that you need to LOVE
your wedding dress.
In 2023, at Bridal Emporium, they look
forward to their new collections which
are in the pipeline, and bringing the
runway to the everyday bride-to-be.
“Our most extensive and exclusive
Ukrainian collection has just arrived
in store and with Barcelona Bridal
Fashion Week hot on its heels in April,
we cannot wait to reveal our newest
additions in the studio.”
Wedding photography:
‘More than just pressing a button’
Text: JUSTINE FORTUIN Photographer: GYPSEENIA LION
ico Myburg is a local full-time wedding
photographer and videographer. He says
everything he knows about photography
is self-taught, with hours and hours spent
watching YouTube videos as well as tips he
got from friends who have made it in
the industry.
“I can actually pinpoint the exact
date when my love for photography started. It was on
a camping trip with my family and I just started taking
photos of nature and rocks by getting all the different
angles, I imagined I was a NatGeo photographer and my
parents and friends raved about the photos. When I look
back at them now, I realise my photography improved a
lot,” he says.
Rico, who studied Journalism and Media Studies at the
University of the Free State, says that when he first started
photography in 2013 he would have never thought
that he would be a wedding photographer. “The thing
I love most about wedding photography is that I get to
be a part of the best day in someone’s life and I get to
capture those memories that will last forever. It is a huge
responsibility. Nothing beats the feeling you get when you
see the bride walking down the aisle with her dad and the
groom sees her for the first time. I just love that I can be a
part of someone’s special day, even though I’m just their
photographer,” he says.
He adds that he has a passion for photography and enjoys
working with people. “What excites me about photography
is that every day you get to see and meet new people and
every experience is different. I am proud to say that 2022
was my most successful year and I really have to give God
all the honour, He blessed me with this talent and really
helped to grow my business through the toughest times.”
Rico defines a good wedding photographer as someone
who loves working with people and has a lot of patience.
“You should be there for your clients every step of the way.
From planning the timeline to fixing the groom’s tie or
helping the bride carry her dress. It’s the small things that
count and leave a lasting impression,” he says.
“For me, wedding photography is different from other
types of photography because there are so many aspects
to a wedding and unpredictable factors that play a roll.
You can’t reschedule a wedding and if it rains you have to
make the best of the situation and think out of the box.
Sometimes there can be a bit more pressure because all of
the moments only happen once. The bride walking down
the aisle, the first kiss and the first dance.”
Clear umbrellas are your best friend during the rainy season
and remember to always pack an extra pair of pants in your
car. I may or may not have ripped my pants at a wedding
before...
“For me, Bloemfontein is all about the people. Because if it
weren’t for all the amazing people of Bloem who gave me
a chance, I would not have been able to live out my dream
of becoming a full-time photographer. I just love all the
beautiful spots in Bloemfontein, from shooting downtown
to beautiful sunsets at Seven Dams. Bloemfontein also has
some of my favourite wedding venues and some of the
best wedding vendors that I have ever worked with.”
WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY FROM A TO Z WITH RICO:
Once I receive a new booking I try to meet with the couple as soon as possible so that we can get to know each
other and plan their timeline together. We then arrange a date for their engagement shoot. On the Friday before the
wedding I usually have a ritual that has to happen or I will feel unprepared. Batteries must be fully charged, all my
lenses must be cleaned and memory cards cleared and double checked. On the wedding day I usually start at 10am
to get some photos of the decor, then it is time for the groom’s preparation photos, then the bride’s preparation,
ceremony, family photos, couple photos, and lastly the reception. This all happens within 12 hours. When I say my
goodbyes I immediately take out my memory cards from my camera and put them in a safe spot for my drive home.
When I get home – usually at around 11pm – I know it sounds crazy but I immediately back up all of the photos on a
hard drive and the cloud. Only after that, I will have peace of mind knowing that the photos are safe. I will then have
a shower and go to sleep. A few days after the wedding I will send a preview of the photos to the couple. Editing
takes a few weeks and after that, I deliver the photos in special packaging with my branding and a few canvases.
“I always joke and say
that I’m not just the
photographer, I see myself
as an extra groomsman or
even a bridesmaid... There is
so much more to it than just
pressing a button.”
Chané
A Jill of all trades
Multi-skilled Chané van der Westhuizen talks us through
her journey as marketing and media coordinator,
florist, photographer, businesswoman and an overall
powerhouse for content creation.
“I have been working since high school, helping my
mom with her business and I have been working
multiple jobs ever since. I’ve loved photography since
I was 14 and I opened my florist shop in Bloemfontein,
Wildflower Floral Studio, years later. We sadly closed
down due to Covid but I have since started my own
business again.”
Her business ‘SheCreates’, is a local, female and queerowned
designing platform.
“We provide services like social media marketing
and design, wedding stationery design, brand guide
creation, and drawn illustrations. Recently though, our
best-selling product has been our curated wedding
planner. These planners have a customisable option
for brides to have their wedding colours and names
on. They date back to a year before your wedding and
include venue comparison checklists, responsibilities,
wedding day checklists, a month-to-month guide for
12 months before the wedding, a menu planner and
so much more. These 15-page e-planners are a lifesaver
and every bride should have one.”
As someone who has helped many brides plan their
perfect day and been a part of the logistics of wedding
planning in multiple avenues, Chané has now found her
partner and is planning her own walk down the aisle.
“My fiancé is incredibly intelligent, professional, and of
course beautiful. I’m the artsy flower girl but the one
thing we have in common more than anything, and the
thing that made us both fall in love, is our shared sense
of humour.”
“In terms of wedding planning, I’m that girl who has
been dreaming of her wedding day her entire life. I
know which flowers, dress, playlist and
guests I want. Obviously,
the first challenge for any bride will always be budget.
Finding the perfect dress until you see the price tag,
making the perfect Pinterest board and then getting
your first quote.”
As a bride-to-be, she explains that there are many things
to think of as it is difficult to determine what the most
important part of your wedding is.
“Other than the people and the beautiful woman I am
marrying, for me, it’s the flowers and the photographer.
A bit of a cliché since I do both of these, but it’s the
truth. I am choosing my wedding date around the time
of year my favourite flower is in bloom. If that season
was snowy or incredibly hot, I’d probably change my
dress cut before I changed my flower arrangement.”
She says that choosing flowers for your wedding is quite
a personal decision.
“I have done a wedding with white sunflowers and
blue thistle, and I’ve even had to dye blue orchids and
lilies. For both of these brides, there was a very personal
reason for their decision and though everyone had their
doubts it fit so perfectly into the rest of their weddings.”
Chané walks us through her step-to-step with brides
when it comes to choosing a floral arrangement.
“If a bride comes in for a consultation not knowing what
flowers to choose, we take it step by step. I would ask
them to go make a Pinterest board of some flowers that
they think are beautiful, we all know how easy it is to get
hooked!”
“I will also ask for a colour pallet of their wedding
decor and venue. If they want something a little more
romantic I will go through the meaning of some flowers
with them until they find a message that fits their
special day. For instance, the Lily says “I dare you to love
me”. The orchid symbolises thoughtfulness, making it
the perfect flower for a distant lover.”
As for her advice on marriage, she says: “Communicate!
Always, always, always talk to your partner.”
A legacy of designs
M Design is a well-known and loved name in Bloemfontein. This family business boasts 50 years
of lineage and legacy carried over three generations with three businesses.
Text: JUSTINE FORTUIN Photographer: GYPSEENIA LION
The ‘M’ in the name of the business stands for Mattig,
which is the surname of the founder of the original
M Design, Mattie Mattig.
The business initially started as M Design in 1972,
when Mattie made ribbons and rosettes for
agricultural shows from his garage in Universitas.
He passed on in 2021, but his son, Eugene Mattig,
continued with the operation and management
of the business and is still running the original M
Design Ribbons & Rosettes.
From the original M Design business, came two
others run by twin sisters Ilze Kirsten and Lizelle van
Niekerk.
M Design Jewellery is run by Ilze and specialises
in the retail, repair, design, and manufacturing of
jewellery in any type of metal. M Design Flowers &
Gifts is owner-operated by Lizelle and specialises
in making custom hampers for clients according to
their budget and own preference, as well as flower
arrangements.
Eugene het in 1980 betrokke geraak by sy pa se
besigheid. Hulle vervaardig rosette en baniere,
hoofsaaklik vir landbouskoue. “Deur die jare het daar
heelwat ander skoue bygekom, soos perdespring-,
bees- en skaap-kampioenskappe, asook honde-, kat-,
voël- en hoenderskoue,” sê hy.
Hy voeg by dat hy al meer as 40 jaar betrokke is by
die besigheid en dat dit vir hom ’n groot voorreg is
om voort te kan gaan met wat sy pa begin het. “Hy
was onafskeidbaar.

Ilze has a goldsmith who she works with
closely so they don’t only retail jewellery
anymore but custom-make any piece of
special jewellery as well.
“I have always loved all things bling and
shiny and always loved jewellery, so the
business stemmed from my own passion
for jewellery. Basically, I’m living my dream
making the dreams of others come
true by being part of the design and
manufacture of their most special piece
of jewellery – like their wedding bands for
example.”
She says her family and her heritage are
very important to her. “So, to be part of
the M Design Group of businesses and
carry on with a legacy started by The Big
‘M’, my grandfather Mattie, albeit each in
our own way, is very dear to me.”
Ilze is in the process of finalising their
website www.mdesignjewellery.co.za. “We
should be live by end of March 2023. This
year has also brought about the addition
of many new ranges to our collection,
such as gemstones and charms. I truly
believe the M Design Group can grow
even further. M Design Jewellery is also
an official Silver sponsor for Alicia Stols,
a semi-finalist in the Mrs South Africa
Competition this year.”
Lizelle says her business started as a
hobby in 2015 when she realised people
don’t have time to do gift shopping, she
started to work full-time at her business
in 2018.
“We offer the service of saving you time
and delivering a quality gift to someone
special on your behalf. I enjoy working
hard and consider myself blessed to be
able to do what I love most… spreading
love. The surprise on a client’s face when
flowers or hampers are delivered is
priceless. So many times I have shared
a tear of joy or even one of heartfelt
condolence with a client when delivering
a bouquet of flowers, on behalf of a loved
one far away”.
M Design Flowers and Gifts service both
private and corporate clients with gift
hampers, corporate gifting, wedding
favours etc.
She adds that M Design is a family name
she is proud of. “It is a great honour
to continue the legacy of M Design,
started by my grandfather many years
ago. I would love to see the M Design
group grow from strength to strength
and continue to be a trusted name in
Bloemfontein.”
formula applies evenly and comes in a spectrum of
shades.
Contour powder
Shape – a medium, warm brown contour powder with a
creates shape and definition around the face and leaves a
silky smooth texture. MUD has a variety of shades available
to match all skin tones.
Food. The one element of any event that brings people together,
apart from the music, and well … of course, the occasion.
Weddings are, for the most part, about celebrating with good
food and good company. This is according to local chef and
baker, Theresa Camacho from Better Together Events.
22 Get It Bloemfontein February 2023 getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein

“The canapés allow you to roam around
and interact with the other guests while
enjoying a sip of champagne or a cocktail.”
Canapés are a great way to get your guests mingling
before the formalities start as they stimulate the
appetite. This will also set the tone for your menu and
allow your guests to relax and enjoy the atmosphere,
as this is usually the time the bridal couple goes out for
their photo shoot.
What’s trending?
Harvest table style.
“One of the biggest benefits of having a harvest table
is that people can help themselves to what they will
enjoy the most.”
Theresa says that another bonus is that these
delectable displays of food also look beautiful.
Doubling up as a unique decor element for your
wedding.
Canapé must-haves, according to Theresa:
People are becoming more health conscious and
follow a variety of eating plans. The best menu for
canapés is one that has a variety of choices so that it
can fulfill most dietary requirements. Smaller items and
easy to eat work best, so that you can have a drink in
one hand and a delicious morsel in the other.
LEjiT 2.0
LEjiT Lekker Restaurant, as well as LEjiT Unplugged,
is a local favourite and it is starting the new year under new management
Text: JUSTINE FORTUIN
The new owner, Joanita Coetzee, promises that the LEjiT
everyone knows and loves will remain the same, with
better and improved services, coining it as LEjiT 2.0.
“Owning a restaurant has always been a dream of mine, since I
was a little girl. I always joked around with my brother when we
were younger and used to say that he would either go to school
for 24 hours or come and sit at my restaurant for 24 hours,” she
says jokingly.
She also says it was always a dream but she didn’t really think
that it would be something that would actually realise. “It was an
opportunity that was presented to me and with a lot of prayers
everything eventually just fell in place and it is definitely a dream
come true.”
Joanita has always loved LEjiT and says she had a longstanding
positive relationship with the restaurant in a personal capacity
and when the opportunity came for her to buy it, she did it
without any doubts. As she is a Chartered Account with her own
firm, this experience is totally different from what she usually
does, but she is definitely enjoying it.
“I like the fast pace, the crisis management, and the fact that you
have to think on your feet and make quick decisions to make sure
that customers are always number one,” she says.
Joanita emphasises that the only thing that is changing at LEjiT
is the management. The staff and what they offer, remains the
same. The only thing they want to bring to the table is better
quality and an overall better experience at the restaurant.
There are also no major changes to the menu. They hope to look
at that when the winter season starts as LEjiT traditionally releases
a revised menu for the summer and winter.
“A lot of customers have promised to send us a few recipes and
we are excited about that.
“This is also another way we would like to include them in the
overall experience at LEjiT,” says Joanita.
She adds that the one thing they would like to focus on is LEjiT
Unplugged, by expanding their catering and platter services in
Colourful & calm
We’re making sure our gardens look lovely and lively
while prepping for seasonal change
Herb of the month
Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is a calming herb that’s
also a delicious dessert herb, used for flavouring icecreams
and sorbet or added to fruit dishes and drinks. It
has a gentle lemon-mint fragrance and flavour that makes
a delicious tea, for sipping after dinner as a digestive or for
winding down after a busy day.
Lemon balm can be sown in summer through to autumn
and grows in sun or partial shade. The compact plants
(30 to 40cm high) are also suitable for window boxes
and pots. It grows in ordinary garden soil, enriched with
spadefuls of compost or in good quality potting soil.
Feed pots monthly with a liquid fertiliser like Margaret
Roberts Organic Supercharger. Space plants 30cm apart
and pick the leaves in the afternoon when its essential oils
are the strongest. Regular picking will produce a bushier,
leafier plant. It flowers in summer, producing small white
blossoms with sweet nectar that attracts the bees, hence
its scientific name. Melissa is Greek for honeybee. Water it
well during hot, dry weather.
Did you know that
Melissa officinalis is a dog-friendly
herb? A mild infusion in their drinking
water helps dogs with digestive problems
and helps to calm those with separation
anxiety. It even reduces flatulence. Note: If
used for medicinal purposes check with
a reputable source for recipes
and dosage.
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
Details: kirchhoffs.co.za
Garden tasks for March
• Start sowing autumn and winter veggies.
• This is the ideal month to sow sweet peas in well-prepared trenches 5cm
deep. Those sown now will flower in June.
• Other winter flowers that grow easily from seed are alyssum, African daisies
(aka Namaqualand daisies), Bokbaaivygies (mesembryanthemums), Linaria,
poppies, snapdragons, Virginian stocks, and indigenous winter colour mixes.
• Fertilise shrubs with 5:1:5 or 8:1:5 to strengthen them for winter. Water
camellias and azaleas regularly to encourage the development of spring
buds.
• Keep your lawn green during winter by fertilising now with Ludwig’s
Vigorosa and water regularly.
Indoor plant of the month
Philodendron ‘Prince of Orange’ is a beautiful multi-coloured hybrid from
South America. The new leaves emerge as golden orange, mature to copper
and finally turn green, with the three colours always present on the plant.
It is relatively slow growing and compact (up to 60cm high) which makes
it perfect for smaller spaces. To make the most of its colours, position it
to receive plenty of bright, indirect light. It can also take some filtered
morning sun. Like all philodendron, ‘Prince of Orange’ likes moist but
not wet soil. Water only after the top 3cm of soil has dried. Feed once a
month with a liquid fertiliser to encourage large leaves. Rotate every
now for a balanced plant. Details: lvgplant.co.za
Real talk from Bloem brides
For these women the big day has come and gone, for
some decades have passed, but they are still learning. It is
often said that no marriage is the same, so the experiences
can never be shared. Get It took a walk down memory lane
with some of our previous cover stars to take a peek at
what marriage has taught them over the years, and if there
is anything they would have changed from then to now!
Hende-Mari Strydom
Seventeen years of marriage built on a foundation of genuine happiness
is about continuous respect. According to Hende-Mari, you need to treat
your marriage with love, kindness and NEVER use the D word. “Making
threats is not a mature strategy for solving any problem. So don’t do it. I
think a good marriage is where each partner secretly suspects they got
the better deal.”
What she wishes she would change on her wedding day? “I wish I knew
half of the 220 people that attended my wedding. I also wish that we
had the destination wedding in Mauritius that we planned to have.”
Luxury that never goes out
Debbie says that she loved her
wedding and would not do
anything different. She got married
in the Mareetsane Community
Hall 14 years ago and what made
it special was that most of the
guests at their wedding were part
of the planning, preparations, and
execution of the wedding.
“From a young age girls dream of
their wedding day and when it
eventually happens, it is okay if you
change your mind until you are
totally satisfied with the outcome.
If you had a certain theme in mind
for your wedding and you see
something else you like even more,
why not?” says Debbie.
The best advice that she received
about marriage is a rule her
husband made, which is never to
leave or run away when they are
angry.
“Trust and honesty are everything
in a marriage/relationship, therefore
communication is very important.
FOCUS ON BRIDAL
Isabel Mohapi
Isabel, who will be married for five years
this year, says the one thing she loves
most about being married is having
a companion, someone she wants to
do anything and everything with, even
when it’s something as mundane as
grocery shopping or going to refill on
fuel after a long day.
Isabel’s advice for future brides? “It is
your wedding day … do what YOU want
to do, if you want a huge wedding and
can afford it, do it. If you don’t want a
wedding, then don’t have one … And
lastly, even though it is your wedding
… it’s your husband’s special day too, so
don’t forget to let him have his say.”
Heloïse Denner
Heloïse said her wedding was quite
traditional and sentimental. Their
flowers included her and other family
members’ favourites, and they had
little cubes of fruit cake at each place
setting, to remind them of weddings
in their childhood.
Heloïse emphasises the need to be
100% sure about the service providers
you use.
Her advice for your wedding: “The
day is about you and your husband.
Your family and friends are invited to
celebrate the two of you, don’t make
yourself unhappy to please others on
your wedding day. And, wear wedges!”
Nadine Saila
For Nadine her actual day was in
court where they just got married
by signing because they couldn’t
afford a wedding back in 2005 but
in 2010 they eventually had a “white
wedding” at Indaba Lodge and this
was the best decision for them. With
regards to wedding planning, Nadine
recommends getting a wedding
planner and sticking to your planned
budget.
Her advice on marriage: “Marriage is a
daily decision you make to stay with
your spouse, and it requires a lot of
sacrifice and compromise, but love
always wins.”
Building a wedding budget
in 3 steps
STEP 1: Set a realistic budget & guest count
According to Sarah, you need to start by sitting down and having an open
conversation with each set of parents. “Make sure they know that you are not
expecting any money from them, but that you need to talk about the money to
set an accurate budget. She says you need to answer the following questions to
establish your initial budget: How much are you, as a couple, putting toward the
wedding? Are your parents contributing? If so, how much? What is your initial
wedding budget?
STEP 2: List your “non-negotiables”
You need to define your priorities. “Having your heart set on a particular venue or
vendor may mean you have to adjust your initial budget,” says Sarah.
Rank each of the following categories to define your wedding priorities and based
on the category ratings, list your top three priorities: ceremony, flowers, overall
decor and lighting, catering and alcohol, music/entertainment, photography,
personal appearance and stationery.
STEP 3: Build your budget according to your priorities
“With your top priorities in mind, build your wedding budget according to average
costs and make the percentages match your preferences,” says Sarah.
Here are examples of how to set the percentages: 15% venue(s), 10% photography,
25% catering + alcohol, 5.5% bridal gown, 5-10% wedding planner and so forth.
Setting (and sticking to)
your budget is arguably
the most important part
of planning a wedding.
Sarah Chancey, founder
of Chancey Charm
Weddings, has put
together three steps to
follow, that will help
couples set, and stick
to a realistic wedding
budget.
Your first step
into the world of wedding planning
It’s a long walk down the aisle and your first step starts with picking a wedding theme.
We have put together a list of themes best suited for your big day.
It’s a long walk down the aisle and
your first step starts with picking
a wedding theme. We have put
together a list of themes best suited
for your big day.
According to Zola, a formal
contemporary theme is sure to
upscale your wedding while using
design elements from the present.
From draped fabrics to crystal
chandeliers, and tall centrepieces,
this theme caters for those with a
sophisticated taste.
If you are more of a traditional classic
person, Zola advises choosing a
classic glam theme. We are talking
over the top, with luxurious details
from the venue to the decor. To balance out the glitz and glam, choose
monochromatic colour palettes with metallic mixed in.
For those who are looking for a more natural theme, Zola suggests
considering an open-air courtyard to celebrate the beauty of nature
throughout your wedding day, opting for décor that incorporates nature
and eco-friendly edible favours.
If you’re getting married in spring, then Zola advises that you go full bloom.
Incorporate fresh spring flowers into every element of your wedding décor
– from elaborate table arrangements to a floral arbour. Keeping to the
seasonal theme, those getting married in winter can consider creating a
winter wonderland for themselves, we are talking full snow, snowflakes, and
glitter.
For the modern minimalist, less is more by limiting over-the-top décor. This
simplistic theme uses shapes, geometry, and small pops of colour to come
to life.
Now that you’ve selected the perfect theme for you and your partner, it’s
time to start planning the details.
“Every person is unique, therefore
we believe that your experience
needs to be unique. We cater for
all walks of life and customise
your dream design according to
your needs, wishes, occupation,
and budget,” says Louis Heathorn.
Text: BONOLO MOLOI
A unique jewellery experience
As a qualified goldsmith for over 20 years,
Louis Heathorn started his journey with
his apprenticeship at DN Jewellers in
Welkom, back in 2001. After completing
this and becoming a qualified goldsmith,
diamond setter as well as a diamond grader,
he decided to venture out on his own by
opening Heathorn’s in 2004 at Victoria
Square.
Venturing on into greater heights, Heathorn
has relocated to Northridge Mall in 2014,
where he joined forces with Melanie, who
had a retail jewellery shop at Pretty Gardens.
This move resulted in them having the
best of both worlds- a retail as well as a
workshop on the premises.
According to Louis, they specialise in the
design and manufacturing of jewellery
catered to meet your dreams. Furthermore,
they also design in 3-D and they retail in
a wide variety of gold and silver jewellery,
which they source themselves.
“We do repairs on most gold, silver, or
platinum items as well as valuations for
insurance purposes. And, we retail in
diamonds, lab-grown diamonds, preciousand
semi-precious stones as well as
moissanite, morganite, and cubic zirconia,”
he says.
Louis explains the process they go
through to meet each client’s unique set
of requirements. “After careful consultation
catered to showcase your individuality
and design, where the prospective client
can ‘see’ exactly what their item will look like,
we cherish our clients’ amazing responses,”
he says.
Since they import all their silver jewellery
themselves, they can ensure a unique
variety to cater to all their clients. “We keep
the quantities to a minimum of each design
to ensure our client’s individualism,” says
Louis.
“As every person is unique, we believe that
your experience must be met with that
in mind. We make sure that we cater for
all walks of life and customise your dream
design according to your needs, wishes,
occupation, and budget,” says Louis.
Being born and bred in Bloemfontein, they
are now designing for the second and third
generations of their clients.
“We’ve seen many family heirlooms being
re-designed for the next generation and it
is always a real honour and privilege to be
involved with the process. Bloemfontein is
a close-knit community and word of mouth
from our clients’ positive experiences is
always wonderful when they suggest us.
It is even better to hear that someone is
visiting us based on a client’s referral,” he
says.
“Trust is essential in this kind of business and
we pride ourselves to be open and honest
with our clients at all times,” says Louis.
Here are some tips from Heathorn’s
for choosing the perfect ring and
other accessories for your special day:
• It is advisable to try on different
styles and designs to see what
suits your hand best and how
comfortable it is.
• Always remember that you will
be wearing your ring every day,
so it needs to suit your lifestyle,
occupation and most of all, your
budget. It needs to be practical for
everyday wear.
• To the men out there, the same
piece of advice is applicable to their
ring choice.
• With a wider range of metals and
designs to choose from these
days, you are not kept out. You can
choose between Tungsten, Titanium,
gold, silver, Damascus and even
Silicone for the sportsmen.
• Wedding dresses normally take
out a huge chunk of the wedding
budget, therefore it is advisable to
keep accessories simple and within
your means.
interior design, and cutting-edge technology.
Co-owned by Driekie Thomas-Barnard & Kobus Thomas,
House of Interiors and D’Ou Jardin Café is a
must-visit destination for those seeking inspiration
iekie started working with her
leader, boasting a clientele spanning
the country, and opened the first
House of Interiors in Welkom 21 years
ago. Today, House of Interiors is located in
Bloemfontein and provides an exceptional showroom to
display their imported and locally manufactured products,
such as furniture, curtains, blinds, rugs, and bedding.
What sets House of Interiors apart from others in the same
industry is their commitment to sourcing the latest design
trends and technology worldwide. They attend various
expos, such as the Dubai Interior Design Expo, and bring
the best in the world to Bloemfontein, ensuring that they
offer clients what the world has to offer, rather than just
what is available locally.
In addition to their lifestyle centre at 38 Abrahamskraal
Road, Bainsvlei. House of Interiors also boasts its flagship
showroom and studio at 4 Brebner Road, Westdene. The
studio is a creative space where the team collaborates
with clients to bring their visions to life. The showroom
showcases the latest trends in interior design and features
a wide range of decor products, including rugs and
lighting.
House of Interiors is not limited to interior design; the team
of professionals can assist with construction and building
as well. House of Building, a sister company of House of
Interiors, provides construction services for those seeking
a complete solution for their home renovation or building
project.
Whether you’re seeking a full-scale interior design project,
a single remodel, or assistance with finding the perfect
decor product, House of Interiors can bring your vision to
life. Their combined passion, skill, and experience make
House of Interiors a one-stop-shop for all your interior
design needs.
Kobus Thomas joined the family business three years ago
and specialises in 3D design and smart home technology,
providing clients with a virtual rendering of their space
that showcases every detail, including motorised curtains
and switches. The duo’s combined skills, experience, and
knowledge are invaluable when it comes to executing
full-scale projects, remodelling a single room, or simply
assisting with finding the right piece of decor to complete
a space.
Their dedication to beautiful spaces extends to D’Ou
Jardin Café, which means “in the garden” in French, and
officially opened its doors in March 2022. The cafe boasts
a beautiful garden area, where patrons can relax and host
outdoor events. The space meets the same standards as
the showroom and is a testament to House of Interiors’
commitment to excellence.
D’Ou Jardin Café is open 6 days a week from 09:00 till 16:30,
and starting from March 2023, they will also serve Sunday
Where to say ‘I do’?
Wedding bells are
ringing but you still
need to find a venue
to celebrate your
special day. Get It
sourced a few pointers
to search for a perfect
wedding venue where
you can say “I do”!
According to the Pink Book, deciding
on the number of guests will greatly
narrow down your venue choices.
Once you have decided on the
number of guests who will celebrate
this joyous day with you, the next step
is figuring out how much it will cost
and how it fits into your budget.
The Pink Book advises that the cost of
a venue should not take up more than
50% of your total wedding budget. If
it does, “you will have to cut costs on
other elements and it might make you
look like a Queen serving McDonald’s
at a royal feast!”
The budget is secured, now you need
to consider what specific elements the
venue can add to the overall look of
your special day.
The Capital Hotel and Apartments
says that the theme and style of your
wedding come down to your personal
preference. Choosing a space that
aligns with your vision should be your
number one priority.
Find out about the availability of the
venue before setting your heart on it.
You wouldn’t want to be a bridezilla
over a venue?
Now that you fell in love with the
perfect venue and secured the
availability, you should ensure that the
catering and bar restrictions suit your
guests. This is also very crucial. Make
sure you know what is included and
what to bring, the Capital Hotel and
All about skincare and skin confidence
Inspired by her skincare journey, Lizelle Exclusive Skincare’s owner, Lizelle Barratt,
says that she can empathise with other people who have challenging skin
struggles. Her 35 years of experience comes with in-depth knowledge of many
skincare brands and a practical understanding of how to achieve results with
skincare ingredients, for skincare and skin confidence go hand-in-hand.
“Skin needs are completely individual and outcome reliant on how well your
skin will tolerate certain active ingredients. Personal preference for routine plays
a big role as well. I firmly believe that there’s no one simple recipe suitable for
everyone. I find that women are often overwhelmed with availability, too many
options, empty promises, and expensive regimes.” she explains.
For Lizelle, the bigger picture of skin confidence is dependent upon effective
skin care, skin rejuvenation, and natural-looking aesthetics. “Investing in
procedures, however, goingwithout skincare is like running a marathon without
training. You will end up disappointed. Skin rejuvenation is high on my priority
list this year. I offer:
TIXEL- for elasticity loss and texture improvement
PLASMATEK - removal of skin lesions and
NORDLYS IPL - unbelievable improvement of brown or red facial discolouration
Careful and effective skin rejuvenation can be a firm game changer
Her best advice to a bride-to-be is to book a consultation ASAP to make
adjustments in skincare which will permanently influence your skin
and it might cost less than you think, without risking a reaction to a
treatment before your wedding.
‘Every woman wants to feel special, look radiant’
Amelia Bellingan has been in the beauty industry since 2004 and she says the industry
has evolved remarkably from just focusing on beauty, to skin health.
This beauty massage therapist would love to see the women of Bloemfontein walk
out of the salon with not just radiant skin but also with knowledge of how to look
after their skin.
“Every woman wants to feel special and look radiant. That is why I use the IPL (Intense
pulsed light) to do all the lazer work. IPL is the newest technology for the removal of
pigmentation, facial veins, and unwanted hair. The plasmatek is used to remove skin
tags, cherry angiomas, warts, and milia and also works miracles with skin tightening.
And last but not least my specialty is doing relaxing facials and massages,” she says.
Her advice to brides is to start preparing well in advance by looking after their skin
before the big day.
“Skincare takes time so be well prepared and don’t forget the laser hair removal!”
Tamlyn Erlank is originally from Kimberley and has been in
the beauty industry for more or less 11 years. “Beauty has
always been my passion from a really young age and my small
business has been open for a little over a year,” she says. At Salon
Everything by Tamlyn, she specialises in skin care, massages,
waxing, and makeup. My plans for 2023 is to evolve as a therapist
and create beautiful memories with my clients. As well as to
deliver excellent customer service and to produce work they’d
be proud of. I really want to be proud of the brand I’ve created.”
Tamlyn says, when it comes to weddings, planning is the most
important part, including time management. “I would like to
encourage brides to take a few months before the wedding to
prepare their skin. This may include going for facials and keeping
that skin hydrated. Find some time to relax. Go for that massage
and remember it is all about you.”
particular passion and specialises in skincare and aesthetic treatments.
“Being a somatologist has not only uplifted me, but it has given me the skills and
knowledge to uplift my clients and make them feel as good as they look,” says
Catarina. In future, she plans to expand her practice. “I never turn down a challenge
and I am excited to learn more and grow in this field,” she says.
Catarina’s pro tips for brides are to stay hydrated by drinking tons of water and
getting enough sleep. She says that brides should make sure they have a good
skincare regime and go for regular treatments to help them achieve their wedding
glow. “Lastly, stay positive and enjoy the journey,” concludes Catarina.
African island
paradise
Nestled on the banks of the mighty
Zambezi, we explore the beauty,
tranquillity and luxury wilderness
adventure that is Tsowa Safari Island.
The sound of the birds and the rustle of our feet trampling on
fallen leaves and branches seems to quieten as we turn the
corner and come face-to-face with a majestic, hundreds-ofyear-old
baobab tree. It’s an extraordinary feeling, standing
in front of one of these beauties for the first time in your life.
Even more so when it’s on a little paradise island nestled on
the banks of the mighty Zambezi River.
A WILDERNESS ADVENTURE
As we continued to walk, mesmerised, around the
enormous trunk of this “tree of life”, we were delighted
to see a table set up with champagne and orange juice,
especially for us, to toast this special occasion.
This island bush walk was just one of the many activities we
experienced while visiting Isibindi Africa Lodge’s remarkable
Tsowa Safari Island near Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
True safari luxury, Tsowa is a little piece of heaven and by
far one of the most carefully thought out and sustainably
designed lodges we’ve ever visited.
With eight, beautifully appointed luxury tents, Tsowa is
the perfect retreat for modern day adventurers who enjoy
immersing themselves in the surrounding wilderness.
Our hosted group had arrived the day before after quick
flights from Durban to Joburg and then Joburg to Victoria
Wine and dine with a three-course
meal prepared in front of you
Falls airport, followed by a one-and-a-half-hour trip
(including road transfer, a 4x4 game drive and a 10-minute
boat ride).
It didn’t take long for us to unwind and embrace the
tranquillity and solitude this exclusive getaway offers and
the intermittent cell phone signals soon started to feel like
a blessing as we sipped our ice-cold sundowners alongside
the Zambezi while watching a large bloat of hippo play
and honk nearby.

Safari luxury at its absolute finest
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
After dinner on our first night, sitting under magnificent
stars with the fire crackling and eerie sounds of leopard
calling in the distance from the mainland just across the
water, lodge manager Eric Maruhwa shared a bit about
Tsowa's interesting history.
The true magic of this luxurious wilderness lodge, it
seems, is the passion and heart that went into its design
and creation. Isibindi Africa Lodges founders Brett and
Paige Gehren took their time deciding where to place
the lodge on this private uninhabited island, even 'bush
camping' on various sites before deciding where each
luxurious tent would be placed.
Of utmost importance to them was that the property
be built with respect to nature and that it blended in as
much as possible with the natural environment. There are
no cement foundations. The riverbank was not disturbed
during construction and trees were built around,
preserved and incorporated into the lodge's architecture.
You really feel like you are engulfed in the heart of this
natural habitat.
SHEER SAFARI LUXURY
Each incredibly comfortable (and sizable) tent is a
luxurious safari haven hidden under the tree canopy with
all the amenities you would expect from a lodge of this
calibre. Think indoor and outdoor showers, bar fridges,
stylish finishes and fabulous views. Absolute heaven.
The packages are almost entirely “all-inclusive”, with
delicious meals, snacks and drinks included. Every night
we dined like kings … three-course meals (cooked in front
of us), served with a selection of top South African wines.
Because it is small and intimate, Tsowa also offers
incredible flexibility in terms of meal times and activities
… you can be as busy or as 'slow' as you would like to
be. And alluring as lazing around the sparkling pool
with a book sounds, the activities available are well
worth exploring!
Included in each stay are guided island bush walks, game
drives, bird watching, river cruises and fishing. Additional
charges apply for guided game walks and canoeing (no
kids under 16 allowed), as well as day trips to Victoria Falls
or Chobe National Park.
We enjoyed a magnificent game drive in the Zambezi
National Park, as well as a thrilling canoe adventure on the
Zambezi (complete with crocs and hippo all around us!).
The birdlife, both migratory and indigenous, is prolific and
Tsowa has become a popular destination for birders who
are looking to tick off some “firsts” on their sightings list.
After a few nights spent on this remarkable piece of
paradise, the lovely staff waved us off as we jumped into
the boat and sailed towards the mainland to catch our
transfer back to the airport. Needless to say, it was hard to
integrate back into the “real world” after spending a few
days on this exquisite, remote African island ... but that is
all the more reason to start planning a trip back soon!
Relax and enjoy the view from Tsowa’s deck
There are both indoor and outdoor
showers at all of the luxury tents
Things you need to know before you book your stay…
Minimum stay of two nights (three-night stays
include a trip to Vic Falls). No children under 12 years.
Guests are transferred from the airport in closed, airconditioned
vehicles to a private entrance to the
Zambezi National Park, and then in an open 4x4
vehicle to the river’s edge, followed by a quick boat
trip across to the island. Rates (which are around
$485 - $580 US, per person, per night) exclude flights,
road transfer, park fees and Isibindi Foundation levies.
