Grant Community Center
Grant Seafood Festival
Free admission, free parking, over
125 crafters exhibiting, live continuous
entertainment, along with a
scrumptious menu of succulent seafood
make this a weekend no one
wants to miss. This is Grant’s 56th annual
festival, and it is the biggest fish
fry in the Southeast.
What sets this seafood festival
apart from others is that it runs
through a 100 percent volunteer effort.
All preparation, whether it be on the
grounds or with the purchasing, cooking
or serving of the various menu
items is accomplished by volunteers of
the community. No regular food vendors
have ever been on site. All booths
are run with volunteers; many booths
are made up of family members, often
times having several generations
working along side one another. It is
this complete volunteer effort that
makes this festival unique. The festival
is open on Saturday from 9 am to 7 pm
and Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm.
There is a stage with ongoing live
entertainment. Every year the festival
begins both days with an opening
ceremony including prayer by Patrick
Pittenger, Star Spangle Banner performance
by Chloe Chase and a Flag
raising by BSA Troops. On Saturday
Josh Blevins Band performs at 10 am,
Nate Bargatze isn’t a household
name...yet. The Nashville
Tennessee comedian has
spent the last 20 years touring and
will come to the King Center for
two shows on Friday, March 24th.
Bargatze’s material originates
from everyday life. His deadpan delivery
is characteristically his own. The
Atlantic published an article dubbing
him the ‘nicest man in standup’. He is
one of the few comedians on the scene
right now that performs a clean routine
that is suitable for all ages.
Bargatze began his stand-up comedy
career at The Boston in New York
City. He has appeared multiple times
on shows such as Late Night with
Conan O’Brien and The Tonight Show
Starring Jimmy Fallon, being one of
the first to perform stand-up on the latter.
He was part of Fallon’s Clean Cut
Comedy Tour in 2013, also winning
New York’s Comedy Festival and the
Boston Comedy Festival that year. He
wrote for the Spike TV Video Game
Awards and has performed multiple
times for American armed forces in
Iraq and Kuwait. He was mentioned
by Marc Maron as a “comic who
should be big” and by Jim Gaffigan as
one of the top up-and-coming comics.
Bargatze’s first stand-up album,
‘Yelled at by a Clown’ (2014), made
it onto the Billboard Top Ten Comedy
Charts for two weeks, peaking at No.
2. He released his second album, Full
Time Magic, in coordination with his
Comedy Central special in May 2015.
In 2017, he had a half-hour special released
on Netflix as part of The Standups.
In March 2019, Bargatze released
an hour-long Netflix special titled The
Tennessee Kid. It was filmed outside
Atlanta, Georgia. His next standup
special, The Greatest Average American,
was released by Netflix in March
2021. It was filmed outdoors at Universal
Studios Hollywood and was
nominated for the 2022 Grammy
Award for Best Comedy Album.
In January 2023, his latest standup
special, Hello World was released on
Amazon Prime Video. It was filmed in
the round at the Celebrity Theater in
Phoenix, Arizona. In the special, Bargatze
talks about his extended family,
growing up in a conservative household,
as well as the ups and downs of
having kids. He also talks about his
favorite pastime: golf.
Bargatze is also hosts the Nateland
podcast, which draws inspiration
from Seinfeld as it often turns into a
“podcast about nothing”. The show
also includes Aaron Webber, Brian
Bates, and Dusty Slay.
It should be noted that Bargatze
will turn 44 the day after the Melbourne
stop of the tour. Show times
on March 24th are 7pm and 9:30pm.
Tickets were still available as of this
writing at www.kingcenter.com.
The Recreation Of
Honey
Miller
By Steve Keller
Brevard County has a lot of
colorful characters. Some
pop up seemingly out of nowhere,
then disappear. We are
all lucky that singer/songwriter/
band leader Dave Miller isn’t a
flash in the pan. His band, Honey
Miller, has weaved in and out of
the music scene for over a decade.
Now Miller is yet again
poised to recreate himself.
To know today we must first start with
the past. As he states online, he began
to add musicians to his solo outings
“sometimes accidentally, sometimes
with intent.” Miller played with such
dignitaries as Jeff Stanton and Ryan
Perez (Rex Goliath), Ana Lusk and
Anthony Darama (Brevard Busking
Coalition/Oranga Tanga), just to name
a very few. Honey Miller, in all of their
incarnations, have played it all. From
tiny eateries in Cocoa Beach, to a twonight
stand at the King Center, audiences
both young and old have been
entertained.
“I am currently collaborating with
Jeff Stanton, Loosey Ross and Vince
Baldino currently creating folk/EDM
fusion music”, explains Miller. “That
is the new direction.” Over the years,
Miller has composed and performed
surf, funky rock, all with intelligent
and often times personal, honest lyrics.
The instrumentation may change,
but the sound remained consistent.
“I’m still writing blues rock &
rock songs. I am in the process of licensing,
multiple pop songs, which
we are combining together with EDM
beats,” he continues. Miller’s clever
use of using the past and the technology
available today sets him apart from
the other solo entertainers on the scene.
“Jake Salter of Tru Phonic encouraged
me to use backing tracks as a solo act
in live performances. Best advice I’ve
had in five years, thank you Jake Salter!
I truly could not do this without all
the great musicians in Brevard County
over the past 14 years.”
The solo spotlight suits him. “I no
longer have a band,” he quips somewhat
thinking out loud. Miller has taken
this opportunity to continue marketing
the music which has garnered
him a quite impressive following. “I’m
giving away one of my albums for free
via QR code complements of the locations
I’m playing at. I will drive everybody
to those locations. And since
I can’t stand half of the venue owners
in this town that are so f--king disrespectful,
I’m glad to have figured out
a way to drive people that want to hear
Honey Miller to those locations.”
So far, it’s starting to work as
the fans have been showing up. “I’m
gonna market the living f--k out of this
thing until I’m dead,” he deadpans like
only he can. “I am having more fun
than a barrel of monkeys and people
love it. Even the people that didn’t like
me that drove me to keep going and, of
course, my friends who encouraged me
to keep going!”
With all that he has going on that
is new, Miller hasn’t forgot what has
gotten him here in the first place. “I’m
releasing an old Honey Miller tune that
we found in the archives featuring Jeff
Stanton on the guitar. It’s called ‘I’m
Not a Junkie’.” He stated that the song
will be available for download and
streaming by press time.
The music scene is alive and well
as long as Dave Miller is around. Currently
doing the solo thing, it wouldn’t
be surprising if the next project is with
a philharmonic. Whichever project he
chooses to do, we are all lucky to bear
witness.
Check out everything Honey Miller, including
solo dates, on their social media.
Dave is currently performing solo
in three locations, The Tiny Turtle, Hogan’s
Irish Pub, and The Cottage Pub.
If you know Dave Miller, you know
that he is a “merciless” promoter and
supporter of his music. Rightfully so.
The Column
By Chuck Van Riper
Apocalypse 3.0
Here’s one of my favorite conspiracy theories. As
you may know, I was very disappointed in the last 2
apocalypses (apocalypsi?). The Y2K thing… nada, zilch,
nothing. 2012, the end of the Mayan calendar thing…
once again, doodley-squat. Very disheartening, indeed.
We really need an apocalyptic viewpoint based on reality
and facts. That never seems to be the case, though. Let’s
look at this next one coming up. Dedicated to all you “Ancient
Aliens” devotees.
I’m sure many of you have heard of Planet X. It is also
referred to by some as Nibiru. Nibiru was first described
by Zecharia Sitchen, whose faulty translation of ancient
Mesopotamian religious texts describe a planet whose orbit
takes 3600 years. This planet, once close enough to
Earth, wreaks havoc on it magnetic fields and causing a
catastrophic reversal in the Earths poles. For those of you
following along with the Ancient Aliens narrative, Nibiru
was the home planet of the Annunaki, who came to Earth
thousands of years ago to mine for gold to save their planet.
They created the human race to be their laborers. Well,
apparently, it’s about time for the planet Nibiru to make its
appearance again. Scientists refer to this as “Planet X”.
Now, scientists at Caltech have found evidence that
such a planet may exist. They deduced this not by actually
seeing it, but by anomalies in the orbits of distant planets
such as Neptune and Pluto and mathematical modelling.
If Planet X exists, it would be about the size of Neptune
and have a mass about 10 times that of Earth. Its orbit,
however, would take it way past Pluto at about 20 times
farther from the Sun as Neptune. Neptune is about 2.8 billion
mile from the Sun and takes about 165 years to make
a complete orbit. Interestingly, Pluto has yet to make a
complete orbit around the Sun since its discovery in 1930.
Its orbit takes 248 years. In contrast, Planet X is so far
away it would take 10-20,000 years to make one orbit!
Well, that would give you plenty more time for Christmas
shopping. I wonder what the Netflix yearly fee would be.
You could squeeze in a lot of movies in that time. According
to conspiracy theorists, Nibiru is right on the other
side of the Sun right now! That means any day now it
should be coming by to obliterate Earth by creating a poll
18 - Brevard Live March 2023
shift. Oh boy! I wonder if that will give us the ability to
tune into HBO Max for free for a little while. I say it’s
time to get out while the getting is good, but where to? I
want to go to the planet Eris.
Beyond Pluto is the Kuiper Belt, which is a vast
region of icy objects and small celestial bodies. This is
where we find the planet Eris. It takes about 557 Earth
years to orbit the Sun, so there’s still plenty of shopping
time come Christmas. There are things to get used to
though. For example, a pound of coffee on Earth would
weigh about 1.8 ounces on Eris. This is due to its gravitational
acceleration. So it would be easy to carry all your
groceries home, except for the fact that the surface temperature
is -400 F, so you might want to bring an extra
sweater or something. Its rotation on its axis is similar
to Earth, which means that a “day” is about 25.9 hours.
I don’t know if they do leap years there, but your TV
schedule wouldn’t be too much different. Right now, I
weigh about 180 pounds (yea, yea, yea, I’m going on a
diet) but on Eris, which is .082 of Earth’s gravity, I would
weigh 14.76 pounds. Problem solved, no dieting needed.
If I could jump 3 feet on earth, I could only jump 1.45 feet
on Eris, so I guess basketball is a no go there. The biggest
problem would, of course be getting there. If I could book
a flight (which is quite iffy these days) on a regular 747,
flying at an average of 570 mph, it would take 1.8 million
years to travel the 9.3 billion miles to Eris. I don’t think
my phone can stay charged that long. How many bags
of peanuts would I get? I know, that is a stupid idea. It
would be much better to take NASA’s Parker Solo Probe,
which travels at a much better speed of 430,000 mph.
Now we’re talking. Then it would only take 20 years to
get there. I wonder if that qualifies it as a smoking flight?
Will there be meals or just peanuts? How many in-flight
movies will there be?
So anyway, with the next apocalypse right around the
corner (Sun), start planning carefully and get supplies in
order. I’m saving up for 4000 pounds of coffee, 20,000
cartons of Camels, and 18,000 packages of Twinkies.
Twinkies never go bad! So, I’ll be all set. When Nibiru
comes screaming around the Sun next month, ponder a
trip to TOI 700 e. It’s an earthlike planet that’s only 100
lightyears away. Happy Apocalypse 3.0!
Gordon Lightfoot
Gordon Lightfoot has recorded 21
albums and has five Grammy
nominations. His songs have been
aired regularly for over 50 years, earning
him Radio Singles Chart Positions
in North America achieved by few others.
Lightfoot’s radio hits in the USA
have earned Five #1s, Five Top 10s
and Thirteen Top 40 hits. In Canada he
has earned Sixteen #1s, Eighteen Top
10s and Twenty One Top 40 hits.
Aside from his success in writing,
singing and performing his own
songs, Lightfoot has found fortune in
having his songs recorded and performed
by other great artists including:
Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Johnny
Cash, Hank Williams, Jr., Marty Robbins,
Jerry Lee Gordon, Judy Collins,
Johnny Mathis, Anne Murray, Olivia
Newton-John, Sarah McLachlan, Barbra
Streisand, Peter Paul & Mary, Harry
Belafonte, Jane’s Addiction, Richie
Havens, Glen Campbell, Toby Keith
and George Hamilton IV.
In June of 2012 Lightfoot’s legacy
was further enhanced when he was
inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of
Fame. Lightfoot was honored for his
role in defining the folk-pop sound of
the 1960s and ‘70s. In his native Canada,
Lightfoot has been decorated with
the highest honors bestowed to a civilian
including the Governor’s General
Award and the Companion to the Order
of Canada honor of merit. He has
Guess Who
The Guess Who was the most successful
Canadian rock group of the
late 1960’s and early 1970’s, and Canada’s
first rock superstars. The songwriting
team of guitarist-singer Randy
Bachman and lead singer-keyboardist
Burton Cummings wrote such classic
songs as “These Eyes”, “Laughing”,
“No Time”, “No Sugar Tonight”, and
“American Woman” (the first song by a
Canadian band to hit No. 1 on the Billboard
Hot 100 chart) before Bachman’s
departure in 1970. The string of hits
continued with “Share The Land”, “Albert
Flasher”, “Rain Dance” and “Clap
for the Wolfman”, among others, until
Cummings left to pursue a solo career
in 1975.
The Guess Who won two Juno
Awards and a Governor General’s Performing
Arts Award, and was inducted
into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame,
Canada’s Walk of Fame, the Canadian
Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Canadian
Music Industry Hall of Fame.
The Guess Who proudly have 11
Gold albums, 16 Top-10 Hits, and five
#1’s over their storied career and continue
to tour. The Guess Who officially
broke up in 1975, though bassist Jim
Kale and/or drummer Garry Peterson
have toured and recorded under The
Guess Who name since 1977. “The
Guess Who” name is currently legally
owned by former bassist Jim Kale,
who is now retired, but has allowed the
name to be used by the current lineup
of musicians.
Supervillains
The Kavasutra Kava Bar located
just off Palm Bay Road is celebrating
its second anniversary and
wants to invite everyone to a big party
with several live bands and DJs,
among them the popular Supervillains.
The band was founded in 1997 by
drummer/lead singer Dom Maresco
and guitarist/vocalist Scott ‘Skart’
Suldo’ when they were in their late
teens. Now 7 full length albums, 3 EPs
and thousands of miles driven playing
the continental US and Bahamas,
the band has become a headliner for
many festivals. The band also features
Brevard native BJ Hall (Abandon The
Midwest) on bass. Maresco comments
on the longevity of the band their
crossover appeal to have been successful
all of these years. “Really, just
being stupid and never quitting”, he
laughs. “We love music, I love to be
on stage and perform. We thrive off of
it, to be honest. We’re grateful that the
fans keep coming, and after a while
their kids start coming and the families
come. It’s multi-generational.”
Brevard County and surrounding
areas have hosted The Supervillians on
many occasions. This time they share
the stage with other bands from our
original music scene: Constant Throw,
Deserted Will, Effit, Never Ender, and
there might be a few more. Manager
Matt Battista: “We want to introduce
our venue to more people and attract a
little attention by throwing a big party
with a lot of music.”
Saltwater Hippy Band
By Steve LeClair
One of the great things about the
Space Coast is our beaches, filled
with warm breezes, beautiful sun rises,
calming waves, and enjoy the comfort
of the salt water. Based here in Brevard
County, The Saltwater Hippy Band
adds to that feel with southern rock,
along with some laid back classics and
a touch of country rock. What’s more
laid back than that hippy feeling! The
band has been together almost five
years now and solidifying the roster in
2019, they feel that they have now the
right mix of musicians and personalities.
The band started through some responses
on Craigslist as singer Tim
Hattaway joined up with some players
who all were already jamming together.
These musicians were starting
back a band that had been on hiatus.
It kind of sputtered for awhile while
they searched for players with matching
goals and musical influences. With
the band solidified, they started playing
at various venues and after one of the
original members left, it was decided
to rename the band. The four that remained
together have become musical
brothers and are having a great time entertaining
people, making new friends
and growing and improving as musicians.
Tim said, “I think our length
of time together, our common goals
and musical interests and our friendship
very positively impact our music.”
As the norm, everyone threw out
some suggestions and one of them was
Saltwater Hippy Band. Sort of perfect
for this group of guys. Tim told me:
“The name reflected our beach side attitude
and it attached also to the music
we played and pretty much describes
the members of the band.” The band
plays songs by groups like the Allman
Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd
Skynyrd, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray
Vaughan, Chris Stapleton, David Alan
Coe, etc… as well as a few originals.
So let’s meet the band!
Singer and Harmonica player Tim
Hattaway grew up in middle Georgia
in the 70’s, just a few miles down the
road from the home of Capricorn Records.
Needless to say, southern rock
was a big part of his life growing up.
Bands like the Allman Brothers, Marshall
Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZTop,
Hendrix and Led Zeppelin were some
of his favorites back then and still are
today. He really enjoys all types of music
though and thinks it shows in the
variety of music that the band plays.
He and his wife moved to Cocoa
Beach about 8 years ago after retiring
to be near family. He had played with
a friends band in Georgia for many
years and was anxious to make some
music connections here in their new
home. It wasn’t easy to connect initially
and was frustrating until he got
a call in response to one of his posts.
This led to the formation of the band.
He’s very thankful for his band brothers,
they love playing music for the
people and hope to continue for many
years to come! A fun fact: During his
time playing and singing in Macon he
was fortunate to be invited to perform
at the “Big House.” This is the former
residence and the now museum of the
Allman Brothers Band. He shared a
stage with some true music legends
such as Jaimoe, Chuck Leavell and
Paul Hornsby. Tim is big into hiking
and the outdoors. He, of course, loves
our beaches.
Guitarist and backing vocalist
Charlie Amrich moved to Brevard 15
years ago, played in several local bands
(including Dangerfish and Electric
Tide) then met up with Tim through his
Craigslist ad back in 2018. Charlie’s
music and guitar influences include
most of the usual suspects; Clapton,
Hendrix, Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, Santana,
Van Halen, along with a healthy dose
of southern rock bands like The Allman
Brothers, Marshall Tucker, The
Outlaws and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Charlie:
“I’m always amazed by a great technical
guitarist, but also love the raw,
rough around the edges energy of Neil
Young, Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)
and the experimentation of The Edge
from U2. To me, it doesn’t matter if
there’s a thousand notes or one, it’s
if you feel something when you hear
it. One thing that’s a lot of fun with
this band is, there’s plenty of room to
improvise on some songs and give it
our own twist.” He added, “The local
music scene is really incredible; that
there are so many great, live venues in
a county the size of Brevard. And you
can’t beat playing an outdoor gig in
the middle of winter, with palm trees,
a tiki bar or the ocean as a backdrop!”
Handling the bottom is Bass Player
Luis Torres. Luis talked about his
humble beginnings. “When I was a
teenager, my cousin and friends were
putting together a band and I get this
call, play bass with us. I said I don’t
know any of that but that didn’t stop
them from saying ‘let’s make a band’.
So I started taking lessons at 14 years
old.” After a few years he started to gig
in venues and stayed true to his musical
journey, learning his technique and
getting an education in music. “I have
been lucky to play with so many amazing
musicians and so many different
genres of music from death metal to
jazz and latin music.” Today he’s glad
to be part of the Saltwater Hippy Band
and “share my musical heart.”
Justin Kanner has been playing
drums since he was 13 years old. His
brothers had a extensive album collection
(Doors, Zeppelin, The Who, all
the greats). He’d listen and the drums
would stand out to him as he’d play
along with his hands on the dresser.
His first drum set was bought by his
father, and a friend showed him how to
play and it just took off! He’s now 60
years old and until joining the SWHB,
the bands he had been in never made
it out of the rehearsal space. He joined
the band about five years ago and
loves playing with them. Justin added,
“There’s no drama or back biting and
they are three of the nicest guys and
talented! I love this band because everyone
is on the same page. I wouldn’t
want to be anywhere else!”
The band plays out from four to
six times a month mostly in the Cocoa
Beach area; but they do perform
in other parts of Brevard frequently so
look them up on Facebook or Space
Coast Live and go check them out!
LOCAL
Lowdown
By Steve Keller
Welcome to March. As the saying
goes, will we go in like a Lion
or a Lamb? With all the talent here in
our Brevard music scene, my money’s
on a roar. It is also the birth month of
my children; Connor 26, Mathew 23
and Sage 19. Damn I’m old (look for a
50th birthday bash concert announcement
later this year). Lastly but certainly
not least, it is Women’s History
month. Plenty of great artists to share
with you this month so let’s go...
You know it’s going to be a good
month when we get a band announcement.
Dig if you will, The Circle
Line. Their debut single “I Find Myself”
is the next Bond theme if you ask
me. Compromised of scene vets Dave
Clark and the power couple of Bonnie
and Andy Harrington, this track rocks.
For fans of Lana Del Ray and Portishead
(Google it), not sure if this is a
record only project or if live performances
are in the works. In the meantime,
go their individual social media
for updates.
If metal is to more of your liking, Corium
should do the trick. I’ve been
watching their progress online and
have been impressed. Reminds me of
my days in Buffalo getting invited to
watch an unknown band called Cannibal
Corpse practice for their first
studio recordings. Corium have their
song, shows and merch game on all
point. Sometimes it can be easy to get
lost in a genre between here, Orlando
and Tampa, these guys plan on carving
their own path.
Let me bend on your empathy for a bit.
We have some peeps that need your
help. Since last column, Casket Culture
singer Josh Doyle was involved in
a horrific car crash after a show which
ended up totaling his car and mangling
his arm. He is on the mend but in need
of funds for the extensive surgeries.
Also ongoing is guitarist, promoter
and all-around nice guy Carlos Satana
(no, not THAT one). He is set to get
a cornea transplant this month. I have
affectionately dubbed it ‘Make Carlos
See Again’. You can purchase Deep Six
Promotion shirts with all the proceeds
going to the surgery. There are also
separate Go Fund Mes set up for both
Josh and Carlos online if you feel so
inclined. Ok guilt trip over. Or is it?
Stacy Lynn Cartechine, lead singer
of the local band Cover Story, went
through something every parent fears.
Her son Alex died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
at age 21 last December.
This is the same condition that my
stepson Mathew had prior to getting a
heart transplant in 2015. The condition
often goes undiagnosed as kids look
healthy on the outside. “He came home
from work, took a shower and literally
just dropped and died,” Cartechine
said. “He had sudden cardiac arrest.”
“This could happen to your kid,” she
continued.
Cartechine got involved with Who
We Play For, a nonprofit charity, to
help ensure other kids get screened
for undiagnosed heart conditions. She
is now leading the charge to eliminate
these deaths in young people through
affordable heart screenings.
The organization began after Cocoa
Beach High soccer player Rafe
Maccarone went into sudden cardiac
arrest right before a game in 2007. He
died the next day. His friends started
the Play for Rafe Foundation, which
later changed to its current name.It
helped Cartechine realize she wasn’t
alone. She met 19-year-old James Gibson
through the group. He was flagged
at high risk during a heart screening to
play basketball. Gibson had visited a
cardiologist, who diagnosed him with
the same condition as her son. “Until
we let enough people know about it,
that they should be screened, it’s going
to continue,” Cartechine said. Screenings
performed recently at Titusville
High are just some of the 30,000 the
group performs each year. Efforts
are being made with Brevard County
Schools to include student musicians
with the screenings in addition to the
student athletes.
Who We Play For wants to partner
with schools, sports clubs, colleges,
parents and other organizations to perform
heart screenings. info@whoweplayfor.org.
Do you like music? I’m guessing
so since you’re knee deep into this
month’s column. You know who also
likes music? Joey Ferris. So much so
that in addition to playing covers in
the local area, has recorded his original
music in a release called ‘We Were
Beautiful’. “The album has been in
the works since the first days of Covid
Lockdown. Big life changes for me inspired
me to write and record new music,”
he says. “I grew up in a small coal
mining community in Southern West
Virginia. Very little television, 2 radio
stations and a 45 min drive to the nearest
city. We learned to play instruments
and entertain each other.” Now Ferris
entertains the county with his originals
that are good old fashioned honest rock
with blues tendencies.
Nicole Luc Roberts is an educator by
day, songstress by night, sometimes
later in the day and a lot on the weekends.
A remarkable story of how she
got into music at age 15 and ventured
with her band from California, eventually
landing in Brevard. Life, love,
marriage and kids, breakups, and finally
returning to live performances
all make up her story which honestly
should be a movie.
Another great rock band closer to home
is Sky Club. They have expanded their
setlist and started to play the cover
band circuit. I expect a banner year
for these guys both with local exposure
as well as new music on the way...
Two other singer/songwriters that have
been entertaining the masses lately are
Alexander James and Corey Kipps.
Not sure if they even know each other.
If not, please consider this your introduction.
Both come from the original
music world initially. As busy as their
cover gig schedule has them, hopefully
they make time this year to record and
release new music. I am speaking it
into the universe as they say. Call me
if your need a drummer.
Anytime I’ll be able to give press
to Sounds of Nebula, I will. I was very
pleased to catch their set at SCMF last
year as they played to a near capacity
crowd. They have a specific sound, far
from any trends that are happening and
I respect that. A lot of bands have come
and go but this band has stuck it out.
Bravo ladies.
Wrapping things up this month with
another great charitable cause. Multi
Emmy award winning guitarist/composer
Brian Tarquin is releasing
“Brothers in Arms” with partial proceeds
to benefit Fisher House Foundation.
You may know him as the host of
WFIT’s Guitar Trax show heard Monday
nights from 10-midnight. Some of
rock’s greatest guitarists including Joe
Satriani and Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal
(Guns n Roses). Tarquin wrote and recorded
all instruments minus drums on
the album. I always love the marriage
of music and charity coming together
and this amazing lineup of players is
the cherry on top. Tune in to the show
to hear album tracks as well as details
on how to purchase.
FISHING REPORT
MARCH FORECAST
By Captain Pompano Rich
B
revard March weather is almost Spring but cool in
the mornings warming to 78 degrees. It’s a great time
to visit us. Especially since Spring Break is not till April.
The beaches and Inlets will provide 12 miles of condo
free lined beaches. Ihave been fishing the East Coast of
Florida for 60 years! Melbourne has always been my
March destination. The ocean, the beaches, the inlets and
the estuary abound with tasty easy to catch critters.
On calm days a party boat adventure is inexpensive
and truly a productive experience. I am talking a mile off
the beach in shallow waters. Slightly silty water one can
see the outlines of patch reefs while headed for your destination.
Virtually each one of these underwater islands
abounds in colorful and feisty 2 to 5 pound bottom dwellers.
Mate rigs everyone up with chicken rigs. (to catch
fish… Whut) I found this funny whilst lacking caffeine!
Three hook leaders with 3 pieces of the bait of the day.
Within minutes the rod tip is rattling and you’re pulling in
who knows what. Mate pointing at a reddish fish coming
up. Yes, a tasty lane snapper, and oh there’s a silvery fish
at the base of the leader. So it’s an ocean porgy. Your fish
receives a marking and placed in huge cooler. Back at the
dock the mate will clean your fish. Of course a generous
tip is welcome.
Head to the beaches south of the town Indian Atlantic
and there are numerous parks and beach entrys in route
to the Inlet. It’s a remarkable ocean for so many coastal
species. The best is the Carolina Traveler. El Pompano!
Here from the Carolinas to scarf up crustacea and enjoy
warmer sea temps. My fave by far.
Bring a seven and a 10 two piece rod and pick up some
sand spikes. The 10 to reach roughly 80 yard sand bars
and intersect the pomps. The seven to throw lures at bluefish,
mackerel and jacks that pound the surface knifing
thru balls of bait. Rigg’s will teach you which pompano
and whiting rigs to use to reach optimal success. Live
and frozen bait is never an issue. The Pompano King Pin
Capt. Matt Burr (Momma B’s charters) works full time. I
can honestly say that I don’t know anyone in Sebastian/
Melbourne that can out perform Matt. He’s on Facebook.
If you want to learn it all including Inlet fishing for snook,
redfish, drum, flounder, pompano and permit he’s the guy.
Rigg’s Outpost has it all.
