for spring cleaning
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
Starting to feel that itch to do spring
cleaning in and around your home? If so,
you will soon have a safe place to unload
most of those unwanted materials.
At the Feb. 14 board of trustees meeting,
Administrator Shane Farnsworth
announced that Jackson Township will
once again host an extended cleanup campaign
in an effort to mitigate unwanted
items found on the side of the street and
Learning to build a fire at Scioto Grove
Messenger photo by Dedra Cordle
Throughout the year, the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks host a variety of outdoor adventure programs that provide
hands-on experiences for visitors looking to learn new outdoor skills. On Feb. 18, Scioto Grove Metro Park in Grove City was the
site of a ‘how to build a fire’ program that taught visitors the basics of building a fire in a safe and sustainable manner. Here,
Travis Campbell, an outdoor adventure program specialist, demonstrates how to successfully build a small fire using tinder and
kindling placed in an aluminum pan. For more upcoming outdoor adventure programs scheduled to take place at the local Metro
Park, visit their website at www.metroparks.net to search for activities.
Barn faces demolition but RecSchool continues
By Andrea Cordle
Grove City Editor
The Grove City Parks and Recreation
RecSchool program will continue, just not
in the big red barn at Gantz Park.
“We are fully engaged and committed to
providing dedicated preschool facilities at
the Kingston Center,” said William Vedra,
deputy city administrator, at a recent
Grove City Council meeting.
Vedra reported that they are making
modifications to the Kingston Center building
to find the best space possible for the
preschool. He said city officials plan to
update the classrooms in the building; one
of which will be dedicated to preschool programs.
“We will continue to provide pre-K programming
long-term,” said Vedra. “It is
still early in defining how big that space
will be.”
RecSchool, which was housed in the red
barn at Gantz Park, uses nature-based
activities to encourage learning in children
ages 3-4. It is operated by the Grove City
Parks and Recreation Department and
runs from September through May.
This past summer, the RecSchool was
shut down after city officials discovered
that a colony of bats were living in the
barn. A colony can consist of hundreds of
bats. According to Vedra, the bats caused
extensive damage to the barn. He said bat
“We are so excited to be able to bring back this
cleanup campaign that starts in the late spring and
extends to the end of summer,” he said.
The township transitioned to an extended cleanup
campaign as a result of the novel coronavirus. Prior to
the start of the pandemic, the township had hosted a
spring and fall cleanup event that allowed residents of
the township, the city of Grove City, and the village of
Urbancrest to dispose of hundreds of pounds of
unwanted household items free of charge.
“It was one of our most popular events — there were
literally lines of cars waiting in the surrounding neighborhoods,”
said Farnsworth.
To slow the spread of the virus, the spring and fall
cleanup event was canceled in 2020 but in its place the
extended community cleanup campaign was established.
S.A.L.T. at Evans Center
The Grove City Division of Police host Seniors and
Law Enforcement Together (S.A.L.T.) meetings at 1
p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at the Evans
Center, 4330 Dudley Ave. Adults of all ages are welcome
to attend. If you would like additional information
on other crime prevention programs visit
police.grovecityohio.gov or call 614-277-1765.
“We quickly discovered that the community preferred
to be able to drop off their unwanted items at
times of their choosing and not just one or two days out
of the year,” said Farnsworth.
He added that it has been a “real benefit” to the
community which is why they do not intend to go back
to that model this year.
“There are so many residents who participate in
this community cleanup program and we have found
that they are not just doing it for themselves — most of
them are helping out their neighbors or going out in
their own communities and picking up items they
found in order to better their neighborhood,” he said.
Starting on May 1, the residents of the township,
the city, and the village will be permitted to drop off
their unwanted household items at the administration
building, located at 3756 Hoover Road, Monday
through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., holidays excluded.
The service will run through Sept. 29.
Items accepted include residential bulk
trash, bulk items, scrap metal and tires.
The latter item is limited to four per vehicle
per trip. Hazardous items will not be
accepted, nor will batteries.
E-waste, with the exception of monitors
and televisions, are accepted year round;
some household furniture that can be
repurposed will also be permitted to be offloaded
through Sept. 29. Farnsworth
encouraged residents to give the office a call
at 614-875-2742 or send an email through
its website at jacksontwpfranklinoh.gov for
more details regarding items that are
accepted or not accepted.
The township will also offer summertime
brush pick-up services for residents in the
unincorporated areas. The schedule for that
service is still being planned; Farnsworth
said the schedule will be available in the
next township/Local Waste newsletter.
Although anyone within the township,
the city, or the village can participate in the
community cleanup campaign during normal
hours of operation, township officials
have requested participants sign in at the
office and let them know which materials
they are seeking to dispose of.
In other news, the board of trustees have
amended its 2023 board meeting schedule,
allowing for their second regular meeting of
the month to be held on an as needed basis.
Trustee Ron McClure said this action was
taken because they do not often have much
business that takes place during the second
board meeting of the month. If the trustees
do need to hold a second board meeting during
the month, it will be announced on the
township website, www.jacksontwpfranklinoh.gov.

The City Beat
City plans to buy Town Center property
By Andrea Cordle
Grove City Editor
The city plans to purchase another property
that would add to the redevelopment
of the Grove City Town Center.
At a recent meeting, Grove City Council
approved an ordinance to set aside
$202,500 from the general fund for the
ability to purchase the space at 3343
Columbus St. This is currently a log house
structure at Columbus Street and First
Street that houses the Hair Shoppe. This
legislation is an option contract with
Robert and Beverly Stephenson.
“We fully intend to exercise this option,”
said Stephen Smith, the city’s law director.
According to the legislation, the city will
pay for an option with the ability to close
on the purchase before the end of
December in 2025.
“That gives the city time,” said Smith.
Grove City Mayor Richard “Ike” Stage
said city officials did not want to take ownership
of the property right now. He said
the city owns the building behind the
Columbus Street property, which was the
old barbershop. The city also owns the
nearby parking lot by the Gold Star
Memorial.
Stage said the plan to develop that
space would be driven by the Broadway
Live plan.
In December of last year, the council
signed off on Axiom Venture’s preliminary
development plan for Broadway Live, a
mixed-use development that is planned
north of Columbus Street and east of
Broadway. According to Axiom, the development
would include about 200 apartments,
along with a dining and entertainment
district. It would include a public
plaza, a 40,000 square foot food hall and
event center, as well as restaurant, retail,
and office space. This would be built on
4.36 acres of land.
The Broadway Live proposal includes
RECSCHOOL
Continued from page 1
waste had been found in the wood, dry
wall, ceiling tiles, duct work, and into the
concrete block walls.
Vedra said after seeing the damage
caused by the colony, city officials were not
confident that they could restore the barn
and make the structure safe. The city plans
to demolish the barn.
“Economically, it makes more sense to
demolish the building. There is just so
much contamination,” said Vedra.
According to Vedra, the cost of the
demolition is just over $19,000. He said
they are working with a contractor to
schedule a date for the demolition.
As for what will become of the park area
once the big red barn is torn down, Vedra
said the city has no plans beyond restoring
the open space.
Community members were pleased
two pedestrian connections to other areas
in the Town Center. One would be the old
library site on Park Street with a First
Street promenade. The other would be a
connection to Beulah Park via the
Columbus Street extension.
In related news, the council approved a
resolution of intent to appropriate property
and easements for the Demorest Road corridor
reconstruction project. Road construction
has been underway on Demorest
Road, and this would extend that work up
to Southwest Boulevard.
According to the legislation, the
Demorest Road corridor is in need of
improvements to support safe vehicular,
pedestrian, and bicycle traffic. The project
requires that the city obtain space from
multiple property owners along that road.
Smith said the project requires right-ofway
on one side of the street. He said they
will begin the process of contacting property
owners.
“We will have the property appraised
and will offer a fair market value,” said
Smith.
In other news, the council unanimously
approved the development plan for Seasons
Grove, located at 1050 Lamplighter Drive.
At a meeting last month, the council
postponed the development plan to address
potential safety issues. The plan calls for
the Columbus Metropolitan Housing
Authority to build an 82-unit age restricted
community on just over four acres of land.
The living units will be inside of a threestory
building.
According to Jackson Township Fire
Chief Randy Little, the development plan
did not allow emergency vehicle access to
the back of the building. He said he would
like to see the developer make changes to
the plan that would allow maneuverability
for fire engines or medical vehicles.
The developer has agreed to work with
the fire department and city staff to make
sure the property meets safety requirements.
about the news that RecSchool would continue.
“We want to make sure the program
continues,” said Chris Emmerich at the
council meeting. “We didn’t want to see it
go away.”
Emmerich said she is part of a group of
people who have been gathering to support
preschool options in Grove City.
“We are going to have a RecSchool classroom.
That’s really what we wanted.”
Kari Mays also addressed the council
and said RecSchool is important to the
community.
“Thank you for working to make this
happen,” she said to city leaders.
Vedra said the dedicated RecSchool
classroom at the Kingston Center should
be ready by the start of the school year.
STATE REPRESENTATIVE
Committee
Assignments
Announced
The Ohio House of Representatives legislative
committees for the 135th General Assembly
were named this past week. I am excited to
share that I have been named Vice Chair of the
Higher Education Committee. Additionally, I will
serve on the following committees: Finance
Subcommittee for Primary & Secondary Education,
Economic & Workforce Development, Technology
& Innovation, and Insurance. Eagerly
stepping into these roles, these committees will
enable me to both contribute in areas I have
experience and some expertise and position me
well to advocate for our district’s communities
as we work to bring more and better jobs to the
area. As Vice Chair of the Higher Education
Committee and member of the Finance Subcommittee
for Primary and Secondary Education,
I am determined to improve access to
quality education at all levels for our young
people here in District 10, as well as throughout
Ohio.
Beyond committee appointments, I also have
been busy meeting with constituents from
District 10 as well as recognizing some of them
for their accomplishments. In late January, I had
the opportunity to attend Congressman Mike
Carey’s official Military Academy Nomination
Reception at the Grove City City Hall, where five
of our finest students from Ohio’s 10th District
received nominations to prestigious military
academies. The students, their nominations,
and current high schools are as follows: Isaac
Carter, Naval Academy, Grove City High School;
Brian Fitzsimmons, Naval Academy, Bishop
Ready High School; Luke McCoy, Air Force Academy
and Naval Academy, Grove City Christian
School; Samantha Paduchik, Air Force Academy,
Grove City High School; Zachary Swierz, West
Point, Bishop Ready High School.
Pictured below is a photo of West Point
appointee Zachary Swierz. To the left is Grove
City Mayor Ike Stage; I am on the right. Mr.
Swierz is a senior at Bishop Ready High School
and will head to West Point in late June to begin
Why can’t we just leave the clocks alone?
We’re well past the shortest day of 2022,
December 21, and quickly working our way
toward what will be the longest day of
2023, June 21. Each new day brings added
daylight as we approach that date. That
can mean only one thing, another dreaded
Daylight Savings Time is awaiting us just
over the horizon on March 15. Passengers,
fasten your seatbelts, secure your seat
trays, and lock your seats in the upright
position. We’re about to fly right into the
eye of another few days of unnecessary biorhythm
and circadian turbulence. And
then, under the assumption most of us
again survive this annual abuse of flipping
our clocks ahead one hour, we can all look
forward to retesting our resiliency by flipping
them back an hour on November 5.
We go through this pointless long standing
clock changing ritual twice every year
and then try to convince our bodies to play
along with the senseless game of gaining or
losing an hour in our creatures-of-habit
daily routines. We try to remember to move
the hands on our clocks one way or the
other an hour, hopefully guessing correctly.
We’ve memorized the saying, ‘spring forward,
fall back,’ or is it ‘spring back and fall
forward,’ to help us spin and abuse our
daily lives in the proper direction.
Setting the clocks is the easy part,
assuming you remember to do it on time
and to do it to all of them. This ensures you
wake up the next morning and begin the
day on the correct schedule and avoid
spending the day apologizing to everyone
“sorry, I forgot to change my clock,” or
being embarrassed for showing up somewhere
too early.
The brain is an intricately constructed
piece of equipment and sometimes the ball
bearings malfunction, especially in our
later years. Asking us to change our internal
clocks to match the reset clocks in the
house and then follow the new time places
undue stress on the bearings for a few
adjusting days afterwards and may
enhance the chances of breakdown or dysfunction.
I still chuckle over an incident years
ago. I was tired after a long, grueling work
week with way too much overtime. I awoke,
looked at the clock and panicked thinking
I’d overslept and would be late for my
important early Monday morning meeting.
I ran about like the Tasmanian Devil, got
myself into the car and sped away to work.
The roads were strangely empty and when
I got there, the parking lot was empty. It
was only then I realized it was Saturday.
Come on, fess up, we’ve all gotten confused
on what day of the week it is, and messing
with the brain twice a year with the time
changes only enhances our chances for
multiple other blunders during a day!
As many frustrating years as I’ve been
through it, and that’s been my entire life
that began back when dinosaurs roamed
the planet in the 1940s, it never gets any
easier. If anything, it’s only gotten harder,
because when you get to be my age, you
could care less about springing or falling in
either direction. Instead, all your attention
becomes focused on just trying to remain in
the stable upright position for later life’s
new routinely bumpy daily rides. And at
our age, we can manage gaining an hour,
but the last thing we want is to lose an
hour.
Dealing with the time changes was more
tolerable as a kid, sometimes even fun and
generated excitement. Turning the clock
forward in the spring meant you could stay
at the field and play pickup basketball
longer. It meant school would soon be over
for the summer. Sure, you lost an hour of
sleep, but we were young and could deal
with it. Besides, half the class was always
asleep anyway. Some of the teachers
taught like they were too. Turning the
clock back an hour in the fall was like a
weekend, you could sleep in an extra hour.
Yes, in those days I thought that was great
because I could sleep. These older days,
getting a few hours anytime is exciting,
regardless of what the clock says.
Since entering adulthood, the annual
clock changing has become about as much
fun as getting a flu shot in one arm and the
latest and greatest Covid booster in the
other on the same day and awakening the
next day rekindling memories of how I felt
the morning following a fraternity house
party.
You could always tell whether we’d
turned the clocks forward or backward at
work. When it was forward, there’d be a
steady stream of employees straggling in
late, sometimes even the boss. Then you’d
see the blank, space cadet employee eyes
walking the halls all day and nodding off
during meetings. The post-lunch normal
glucose high employee snoozathons would
increase even more and you could walk by
office doors and see bobbing heads staring
blankly at strategically placed computer
screens so no one could see eyes were
closed.
When clocks were set back an hour in
the fall, that meant lunchtime was also
moved back. Pre-lunch midday meetings
were always unadvised if you wanted to
conduct serious business with the embarrassing
gurgling, begging for food,
renowned stomach ensemble playing in the
background across the tables and around
the room.
There’s always the common chatter
across homes after time the changes: “I
don’t care what the clock says, I’m hungry
now,” or “I don’t care what time it is, I’m
tired and going to bed now.” When the time
Guest Column
Dave Burton
changes the other
way, “It’s too early
to go to bed, I won’t
be able to fall
asleep,” or “I know
it’s lunchtime, but
it’s too early, I’m not
hungry yet.”
If you have a dog,
you know their internal clocks are always
as exact as an atomic clock, right down to
the second. They know exactly when they
eat, go for walks, and get their treats and
cookies. Don’t even think of changing it or
be prepared for an impatient “Come on,
Pops, get with the program” stare down
they always win that leaves you with a
guilt complex. Even they know changing
the clocks makes no sense.
The public outcry ensues and grows to a
crescendo each year when the clocks get
turned forward and we lose an hour of
sleep. The politicians hear their voter base
loud and clear and jump into action at the
state and federal level to address the outrage.
Relentless legislative efforts across
the country result in multiple bills to make
Daylight Savings Time permanent. It
seems like all agree, the exasperating clock
changing routine must stop. Bills get
quickly passed by one branch of state or
federal congress then die just as quickly in
the other branch as they become stuck in
the quagmire of committees. More than
half the states currently have bills still
pending. The annual cycle completes as
unpassed bills end up sitting in limbo.
Public outcry slowly wanes only to reappear
when we play with the time again.
I’ve read many of the pros and cons that
are always rehashed every year surrounding
the topic of continuing to change the
time twice a year, or just making Daylight
Savings Time permanent. Most arguments
include aspects of safety, health, the economy,
productivity, cost, energy, and longer
evenings.
From my perspective, we revolve around
the sun, but our daily lives revolve around
our clocks and when you mess around with
those clocks, our spinning rotation gets off
kilter for days each time. Just make
All ages games are played on Saturday
mornings and each game lasts approximately
one hour. Each team will bat completely
through their lineup with each
player getting on base. The last player in
the lineup scores a homerun and brings
everyone home, then the teams switch.
This may happen more than once depending
on the team size and the flow of game.
Adult league games are played Tuesday
evenings and last approximately 75 minutes.
Regular baseball rules and offensive
and defensive skills are taught. Each team
bats until either gets three outs or bats
around the lineup, and the score is kept.
A multi-year project that aims to make
lasting improvements to one of the largest
properties within the South-Western City
Schools District will soon come to a close.
At its meeting on Feb. 13, the board of
education unanimously approved an item
for action that allowed the district to come
to terms with a local construction company
for the third and final phase of the transportation
lot improvement project.
Under the terms of the contract, the district
will pay the Columbus-based
Strawser Paving Company $471,300 to
remove old asphalt paving from under the
bus parking spaces and replace it with
roller compacted concrete for extra durability.
“This will alleviate buses sinking into
the asphalt,” said Evan Debo, the district’s
executive director of communications, in an
email explaining the scope of the project.
In addition to that payment, the district
will also pay $47,000 for owner’s contingency
for unforeseen items and/or owner
requested changes during the construction
process.
The final phase of the transportation lot
improvement project will take place over
the summer when the district’s fleet of
more than 200 buses sit idle.
The first phase of the project to make
improvements to the 13-acre lot on
Southwest Boulevard was completed in
2021 and the second phase was completed
in the following year. District officials said
the project had to be broken down into multiple
phases because of the scope of the project
and the logistics of relocating hundreds
of buses.
The need for the paving project was
sure your player is safe. Safety is the number
one concern. In addition, your role may
include, but is not limited to:
•Helping your player bat, field the ball,
run the bases, or simply being an encouraging
voice. (Keep in mind that each player is
different, as is their level of participation.
Please make sure your player is participating
to the best of their ability. If you are not
sure of what their ability is, consult with
the parents/caregivers.)
•Arriving 15-20 minutes prior to your
game(s) to meet your athlete and get organized
before the start of the game. Also,
upon arrival, check in with the buddy coordinator
who will direct you to your
assigned team.
•Remember, your main priority is your
athlete. Make sure they are the center of
attention for the time you are together. The
goal is to have them shine and enjoy the
game of baseball.
Transportation lot repairs close to complete
addressed at a board of education meeting
in 2020 when employees with the transportation
department began to notice fissures
growing underneath the asphalt. The
district has spent more than $935,000 to
address these issues in its first and second
phase of the transportation lot improvement
project.
In related news, the board of education
also approved a contract with Final Floor
Inc., a flooring contractor based out of
Sugar Grove, Ohio, to replace the gymnasium
flooring at Grove City High School in
the (estimated) amount of $205,856. The
board said this measure was needed as the
flooring was extensively damaged when a
water line burst at the school over winter
break.
District officials said the work to replace
the wooden floor will begin at the conclusion
of the winter sports season.
In other news, the district has approved
its summer school calendar for high school
students. Summer school will take place
from June 7 through June 30 (there will be
no school on June 19) and the instruction
hours will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The district will not provide transportation
during the summer session and there will
be no fee assessed to the students.
Central Crossing and Grove City High
School students will attend classes at
Central Crossing, whereas Franklin
Heights students and Westland students
will attend classes at their respective
schools. All students taking health or physical
education will attend Central
Crossing. The end of course exams will
take place on June 26, 27, 28, 29; Each
high school will test their own students.
Graduation is scheduled for Aug. 17 at 6
p.m. at Westland High School.

I have to admit that I have not been staying up-to-date with the
latest happenings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — after
releasing more than 40 films and television shows within a span
of 15 years, I am a bit tired of this world — but I also have to admit
that I always keep my eyes open for anything and everything
related to the “Ant-Man” franchise.
Ever since the shrinking superhero series made its theatrical
debut in 2015, there was something that felt different about this
property and truly set it apart from all of the other offerings that
had come before it — and especially those that came after.
I think much of that different feeling stemmed from it being
centered around an average guy — or in this case, an ex-con —
named Scott Lang who temporarily gains superpowers after he
accidentally dons a special suit that shrinks the wearer down to
ant size with the push of a button. Played by the affable and
charming actor Paul Rudd, Scott’s adventures in and out of the
suit made these films that were full of low stakes, fun hijinks, and
shifts-in-scale camera shots something special and something to
look forward to whenever this character had the opportunity to
shine in his own solo films.
When I heard that Marvel Studios had announced that “Ant-
Man” would be getting his third solo film, I was looking forward to
watching it even though the Marvel fatigue had already set in at
that point. But when I heard that this film was going to be the film
that would kick-start phase five of its ambitious plan to bring
every single Marvel comic book character to life on the big screen
(that might be a slight exaggeration), my excitement started to
wane because I knew what this probably meant: That Marvel
Studios had taken over this franchise in service of the greater
Marvel machine. And that is exactly what happened with “Ant-
Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.”
Gone are the fun hijinks, the usual quirky personalities, and
the laid-back feel of the first two films and in its stead is a proper
MCU blockbuster complete with high stakes, intense drama, copious
battle scenes, and shoe-horned lore and villainy to sustain the
next decade of Marvel film and television properties. The only
thing that really saves this film or makes it worthwhile to watch
are the performances of the main cast and the warrior ants who
make an appearance later on.
When the awkwardly titled film begins, we learn that Scott has
been on quite the tear in the years since helping save the world
from Thanos, the purple villain from the first three phases of the
MCU who “snapped” billions from existence. His tear nowadays is
not helping people, technically, but rather touring the country to
sell his memoir that recounts his transition from an ex-con to an
Avenger whose idea sparked the time heist that restored billions
of lives during the Infinity Battle. Although he is certainly proud
of his accomplishments (who ever thought he would be able to
write a best-selling book one day?), his 18-year-old daughter
Cassie (Kathryn Newton) is less than impressed by this latest version
of her father, believing that he should still be living up to the
title of his memoir and “looking out for the little guy.”
Because she has taken up the mantle to look out for the little
guy, it has gotten her into quite a bit of trouble with the law. After
her latest arrest at a protest for homeless rights, Cassie and her
dad get into an argument that leads the pair, along with Scott’s
superhero romantic partner Hope van Dyne/the Wasp (Evangeline
Lilly) and her parents Janet van Dyne and Hank Pym (Michelle
Pfeiffer and Michael Douglas, respectively), to accidentally get
sucked into the Quantum Realm, a subatomic world under the
Earth that is filled with beauty, mystery, and dangerous creatures.
One of the most dangerous creatures within this strange new
world is a time-traveling being named Kang the Conqueror (a fantastic
Jonathan Majors) who had laid waste to much of the
Quantum Realm. Having been trapped there for decades, Kang is
eager to get out and travel into a different timeline because there
is so much to see, so much to conquer, so much to destroy.
Naturally, it falls upon Scott and his not-so-merry band of troublemakers
to ensure that Kang does not get out and wreak havoc onto
www.columbusmessenger.com
In Entertainment
Marvel uses latest “Ant-Man” film to plan for the future
the world.
I am often puzzled by some of the decisions that the
executives at Marvel Studios make but introducing
Kang the Conqueror in the “Ant-Man” series was a
real head-scratcher for me. I think they wanted to
bring this new and menacing yet complicated villain
into a property that most of the general audience knew
well, but it created a very unusual tonal imbalance
throughout the entire film, and especially when Scott
and Kang met and eventually battled. I guess that is
just what happens when you try to shoe-horn a bunch
of lore and heavy action into a movie franchise that
has always been light on both.
“Quantumania” is a movie that is too reliant on CGI
and action to get points and plots across, but I maintain
that it did not have to go this way. Had Marvel
Studio trusted director Peyton Reed and writers Jeff
Loveness and Jack Kirby to come up with something
inventive that worked within the framework of the
previous two “Ant-Man” installations, this movie could
have been completely salvageable. Instead, Marvel
Sewage issues cause concern
By Hannah Poling
Staff Writer
Continued sewage concerns at the Community
Gardens mobile home park were discussed by the
Pleasant Township trustees.
According to trustee Nancy Hunter, she is still
receiving a lot of complaints about sewage issues in the
area.
Residents of Community Gardens attended a board
meeting this past November to share their concerns.
According to recent complaints, the issues have yet to
be resolved within the community.
The problem has been going on for the last several
years, first gaining attention when the mobile home
park was accused of dumping raw sewage into Darby
Creek. In November, residents stated that their
sewage problems are more extreme than ever and are
affecting everyone who lives inside the community.
Residents have reported that water coming out of
their faucets are colored and some reported going without
water all together for weeks at a time. Other residents
say sewage backs up on their property and there
is a lack of sewage pumps to support the number of
homes in the community.
According to the complaints received by Hunter,
these issues are continuing despite the trustee’s trying
to find resolution for these individuals.
Hunter said that she forwarded the recent complaints
she received to the state department of commerce
in an e-mail and she received a reply from stating
that they will try to address some of the concerns.
“I heard back from them. They have put it in their
system and they will be looking into the complaints,”
Hunter said.
Furniture Bank
seeking donations
The Furniture Bank of Central Ohio
(FBCO), is looking to the community to
help meet the current demand for furniture
and household goods.
Due to a recent natural disaster, FBCO
is assisting displaced Columbus residents,
who lost all their belongings, filling their
new homes with furniture and basic
household goods. However, donations of
gently used furniture and home goods are
needed from the community to meet the
increased demand.
“We are grateful to be able to help our
neighbors during this crisis but we cannot
do it alone,” said FCBO President and
CEO, Phil Washburn. “We are relying on
our community to help us restore hope for
these affected families by donating their
gently used furniture and housewares.”
The items of greatest need are full and
queen mattresses, dressers, sofas, and
kitchen dining sets.
Donations can be dropped off at
Furniture With A Heart at 2165 Morse
Road in Columbus, Monday through
Sunday, or at FBCO at 118 South Yale
Ave., Monday through Friday, from 8:30
a.m.to 3:30 p.m. Donations of the items
listed can also be picked up by calling 614-
545-3838. All donations are taxdeductible.
Community members that do not have
furniture or home goods to donate can purchase
items from FBCO’s Amazon Wishlist
that will be given directly to families in
need. The wish list can be found at furniturebankcoh.org/amazonwishlist.
For more information on donating furniture
and other home goods, visit furniturebankcoh.org/donate-furniture.
The mission of the Furniture Bank of
Central Ohio is to reduce the impact of
poverty by providing furniture to central
Ohio families and individuals struggling
with severe life challenges.
