crime spree

A 21-YEAR-OLD man made 

three false calls to emergency 

services within a week and even 

started lighting his own fires, 

rushing back to his crime scene 

to film the firefighters in action 

after he raised the alarm. 

Caleb Pope was sentenced on 

a lengthy list of charges relating 

to arson and burglary last week. 

Pope called Fire and 

Emergency NZ four times 

between March and June 

last year, falsely claiming 

he could see smoke coming 

from Hammer Hardware and 

The Famous Grouse Hotel in 

Lincoln, he could see a vehicle 

in the Waimakariri River, 

and he could also see smoke 

coming from a petrol station in 

Christchurch. 

Fire fighters attended each 

call but could not find any 

smoke or vehicle in the river 

and classified them as false 

calls. 

On March 28 last year Pope 

started a small vegetation fire 

on the side of Rolleston Rd then 

called Fenz, which attended 

and put it out. He did this again 

on May 27 on Days Rd. 

A week later Pope drove, 

while forbidden from driving, 

to a Repco store in Hornby at 

8.30pm. 

He approached a mediumsized 

rubbish skip and using a 

lighter, set several bits of paper 

on fire before throwing them in 

the skip.

want clubs to be more honest 

about their playing numbers 

after two division 1 sides 

surprisingly merged just 

weeks out from the start of the 

competition. 

Lincoln and Rolleston will play 

as one this season after Lincoln’s 

squad fell apart with retirements, 

injuries and 

players heading 

overseas.

then met on 

Wednesday and, after discussing 

it with players on Thursday, it 

was a done deal. 

Ellesmere sub union chairman 

Chris Thornley said the late notice 

of what was happening was 

frustrating as the draw for the 

season which starts on April 1 

had been done with Lincoln and 

Rolleston as separate teams. 

It would now have to be redone, 

he said. 

“We are a bit concerned clubs 

have not been honest (about 

playing numbers). There’s a little 

bit of frustration as it is such a 

complicated thing to do draws.” 

The sub union has sent an 

email to all clubs asking they be 

more up front in future. 

“If you (clubs) are flying 

close to the wind (with player 

numbers) we need to know what 

plans they might have,” Thornley 

said. 

Lincoln has been one of the 

power houses in Ellesmere rugby 

over the decades with its name 

etched many times on the sub 

union’s most prized trophy, the 

Coleman Shield.

by Bevan Sisson and Jody Smith, 

who had been appointed to 

coach Lincoln.

year Matt Cawley would also be 

part of the line-up.

Rubbish set ablaze to film firefighters

The fire engulfed the rubbish 

inside the skip, causing severe 

damage to the bin. 

Pope fled the scene, called 

Fenz and then returned when the 

firefighters arrived to film them 

in action. 

When questioned by police 

Pope said he was burning his 

court paperwork. 

Assistant District Commander 

Steve Kennedy said Fenz worked 

with police in relation to several 

incidents involving Pope. 

“False or malicious 111 calls 

go through the same process as 

all 111 calls, which means that 

they end up taking up valuable 

time of not only our 111 Fire 

Communication Centre staff but 

also the crews that respond to 

the calls,” he said. 

Kennedy said if crews were 

responding to false calls that 

would mean they are generally 

unavailable for any genuine calls 

that may come in. 

Pope also faced burglary 

charges involving stealing from 

his elderly neighbour, who was 

in hospital. He and an associate 

stole a barbecue, a heavy-duty 

vice, a table, a bench seat, a 

compressor and a vintage engine 

from the man’s shed. 

Everything was sold on Facebook 

marketplace to unknown 

people, except for the heavy-duty

vice which was recovered during 

a search of Pope’s house. 

Between June 17-20 last year, 

Pope and the same associate 

broke into a construction site in 

Wigram. 

Pope had a set of master keys 

and used them to unlock a digger 

for his associate to climb in 

and begin digging holes in the 

ground. 

The pair then stole two heavyduty 

digger ramps, hard hats 

and strops from the construction 

site before advertising them on 

Facebook marketplace. 

Pope and his associate also 

broke into a Christchurch City 

Council-owned sports building 

in Wigram, stealing a football 

launcher. This was later recovered 

at Pope’s address. 

Between October 2021 and 

January 2022 Pope was employed 

by a construction and engineering 

firm but only worked a total 

of nine days before quitting. 

After termination of employment, 

all employees are to cease 

use of company accounts but on 

four separate occasions, Pope 

used the account to purchase 

builder’s tools. He spent a total of 

$2702 at Bunnings Warehouse in 

Shirley and Mitre10 in Papanui. 

On July 6 last year Pope was 

working for a different construction 

company through a temping 

agency. 

Between 4-8pm, he drove to 

a construction site in Lincoln 

where he had been working and 

cut and ripped out copper cables 

from the ground. He also stole a 

hydrant stand, tools and a strop. 

That same night Pope was 

stopped by police driving a large 

tanker truck from the construction 

company during a time he 

was forbidden from driving. He 

also admitted to police that he 

didn’t have permission from his 

employers to drive the truck. 

Pope was given a sentence of 

15 months which could be served 

as home detention if he could 

find a suitable address, Judge 

Quentin Hix told him. 

Pope’s lawyer Sabrina Forrester 

said her client had a challenging 

upbringing with family members 

being in and out of prison, which 

was normalised in his youth. 

She said violence, mental 

health concerns and a mistrust 

of police had significantly shaped 

Pope’s perspective and could be 

connected to his offending. 

Forrester told the judge Pope 

was a vulnerable young man who 

had already been assaulted in 

prison and now understands the 

consequences of his actions. 

Judge Hix gave Pope discounts 

for his youth, remorse, challenging 

upbringing and mental 

health issues. 

He expressed his concern 

for Pope who was unable to 

find a suitable address to serve 

his sentence as one of home 

detention. 

“I just really worry because 

there’s nowhere for you to go 

to get out,” he told Pope before 

remanding him in custody.

music festival starts at 11am on 

Saturday at Lincoln Domain, 10 

truckloads of gear weighing 70 

tonnes will be in place. 

Event director David Parlane 

says the crew has spent the 

last week erecting fencing and 

preparing the venue to welcome 

the crowd. 

“We will be at capacity on 

Saturday,” he said. “It’s all 

consuming at the moment, but all 

is calm and everything is falling 

into place at it should.” 

The main stage was in at 6am 

on Monday, fresh from being 

used at Electric Avenue in Hagley 

Park over the weekend. 

“As soon as it finished on 

Saturday evening the stage was 

dismantled. It is on two very large 

trucks and once the trucks are in 

place, supports are put down, and 

the roof gets put on. It is a two 

day job to get the stage in place 

before we can start hanging lights, 

speakers, screens all those sorts of 

things.” 

“It’s a bit like a jigsaw puzzle, 

you’ve got to start with the edges 

then you’ve got to work your way 

around.” 

Parlane and his business 

partner launched Selwyn Sounds 

in 2017. Covid-19 restrictions 

forced the festival to be cancelled 

a month before it was to take 

place last year. Parlane said even 

though the team has run the 

event successfully over the years 

it has gone ahead, there is never 

room for complacency. 

To make events like this run 

like clockwork there is more 

going on in the preparation which 

members of the public generally 

never see.

morning and Parlane said they 

will have time for a “line check” 

before general admission gates 

open at 10am. There will 34 food 

vendors on site during the day, 

with “more than 200 people will 

be working at the event on the 

day.” 

The team will return to the 

venue early on Sunday morning 

and take two days to fully pack 

up. “You wouldn’t know there had 

even been a festival there. A week 

to pack it in, and a couple of days 

to pack it out,” Parlane said.

Crowd urged 

to help 

with cyclone 

recovery 

SELWYN SOUNDS will be 

the springboard for a district 

council fundraising campaign 

to help with the recovery from 

Cyclone Gabrielle. 

The district council has 

joined Local Government New 

Zealand’s Adopt-a-Community 

programme to support the 

hardest hit areas. Selwyn will 

support Gisborne Tairāwhiti. 

A number of fundraising 

events are planned, the first 

on Saturday at Selwyn Sounds, 

where district councillors and 

volunteers will be collecting 

funds. 

Said Mayor Sam Broughton: 

“We are a community of a 

similar size to Gisborne, with a 

large geography, a population 

of 50,000 and an expansive 

rural network of communities. 

So we’re asking our Selwyn 

community to get behind 

Gisborne. 

“We know from the disasters 

we’ve experienced here in 

Canterbury that recovery is a 

long-road.”

From hospital nurse 

Karin Bos was a nurse at 

Christchurch Hospital for 20 

years. Now she cares for 

some of the most precious 

wildlife in Canterbury. 

Heidi Slade reports 

KAITORETE IS one of the 

region’s hidden, natural gems. 

The 25km spit runs south-west 

from near Birdlings Flat along 

the southern edge of Te Waihora/ 

Lake Ellesmere. 

Home to banded dotterel, 

ground-nesting birds such as 

oystercatchers and endangered 

native spiders like katipō, as 

well as skinks and two species 

of flightless moth, the area is 

also populated with pests such 

as hedgehogs, mustelids, 

possums and feral cats. 

Bos has been working for Pest 

Free Banks Peninsula for 20 

months on various projects. She 

is now based at Kaitorete as a 

dog handler for its conservation 

dog programme. 

‘‘I’m excited to be a part of such 

an enormous, amazing goal,’’ 

said Bos who lives in Little River. 

Since December, she has 

worked with Mobab, a threeand-a-half-year-old 

border terrier 

trained to track hedgehogs. 

Recently the pair were 

joined by Terry, a 20-month-old 

welsh springer spaniel trained to 

track down feral cats. PFBP has

‘‘We are the only Predator 

Free 2050 project that is 

targeting that many species at 

once,’’ Sjoberg said. 

After spending 20 years 

as a surgical and cardiology 

nurse at Christchurch 

Hospital, Bos said she 

decided to pursue her 

passion for conservation fulltime. 

She has found what she calls 

‘‘the ultimate job.’’ 

Sjoberg said PFBP is 

‘‘blessed’’ to have Bos. 

‘‘Her strength 

is communication and being 

able to work under pressure,’’ 

which he says comes from her 

work as a nurse. 

He also praises her ‘‘detailed 

and concise approach.’’ 

It helps Bos to get in touch 

with the dogs and understand 

their behaviours. 

Mabob and Terry live with 

Bos on her property, which 

she likes to call their ‘‘palace.’’ 

She said they benefit from 

living with their handler as it 

helps the dogs develop a much

stronger bond with her. 

They are also expensive, 

highly-trained animals, so it is 

important to keep them safe. 

Sjoberg said ‘‘knowing the 

dog intimately so that the wag 

of a tail or scratch of an ear’’ 

indicates they are close to a 

pest is important. 

‘‘These are the little signs 

that Karin needs to pick up 

on and she’s so good at that. 

‘‘I was just blown away 

with how much those dogs 

love Karin.’’ 

While no two days are 

the same, Bos will check 

the ‘‘remote reporting 

network’’ daily to see 

which of PFBPs numerous 

live capture traps have been 

set off, she said. After her and 

the dogs investigate, she then 

lets them sniff out other 

predators. ‘‘They are detection 

dogs (and) they are pointing 

the animal out to me . . . 

I’m the one in charge of what’s 

happening to the animals’’ 

Bos said. 

Training the dogs takes 

20 to 24 months and 

involves expert trainer Billy 

Barton from Hawea. Barton 

specialises in training dogs for 

conservation purposes.

Daughter fights for stake 

in mother’s $20m estate

A WOMAN who amassed a 

fortune of at least $20 million 

with her husband, promised her 

three adult children a future of 

financial security – but not a cent 

was left to them when she died. 

All of Libby Glass’ riches were 

instead left to her husband, 

Denver Glass, and to charities. 

Now one of Libby’s daughters, 

Lisa Knight, has turned to the 

court to fight for a stake in her 

mother’s estate, claiming she 

had been guaranteed at least $1 

million. 

High Court Justice Rachel 

Dunningham heard the 

application and granted Knight 

leave to bring a claim for division 

of the estate. 

The judgment on the property 

relationship war tells the sad tale 

of a blended family crippled by 

broken relationships within. 

Libby and Denver, of 

Christchurch, tied the knot in 

1987. It was the second marriage 

for both of them. While they 

never had children together, the 

couple each has children from 

their first marriage. 

Denver had four children and 

Libby three: Nicole, Lisa and 

Stephen. 

When the couple first got 

together, Denver owned a home 

in Yaldhurst, which he retained 

after separating from his first 

wife. The newlyweds lived there 

until they sold the home in 1995. 

In the decades that followed, 

Denver’s meat processing 

businesses flourished and Libby 

established a fashion boutique 

in Merivale, known as Posh of 

Holmwood. 

The couple built a sizeable 

asset base through Denver’s 

businesses as well as through 

acquiring, renovating and selling 

opulent Christchurch character 

houses. 

The properties included a 

homestead at Racecourse Hill, 

on West Coast Rd in Darfield; 

the Greystones, Banks Ave; and 

the historic mansion Daresbury 

in Fendalton. 

Racecourse Hill has nine 

bedrooms and sits on 25.8ha. It 

was originally built in 1912. 

Libby and Denver lived in the 

properties while doing them up, 

using Libby’s passion for interior 

design. They also owned holiday 

homes in Akaroa. Each time 

they purchased a new house 

a trust was set up to own the 

property. 

Following the earthquakes, the 

couple created a plan for their 

estate, which the decision said 

was worth at least $20 million at 

the time of Libby’s death in 2020. 

As noted in the court 

document, Denver 

acknowledged he and Libby 

planned to give each child $1 

million during their lifetimes, 

instead of an inheritance. 

“They intended the money 

would be used to acquire family 

homes, or to pay off borrowing 

on such homes, and that the 

property acquired would then 

form an inheritance for each of 

their children’s family unit.” 

The balance left after assisting 

their children was to enable 

Libby and Denver to live in 

comfort and on their deaths to 

benefit charities. 

In their mutual wills, executed 

in 2018, Libby left her chattels 

to Denver to distribute them 

“as he saw fit” to her children 

in accordance with wishes she 

made known to him before she 

died. 

She noted in her will that, 

other than personal chattels, 

she had intentionally not made 

any financial provisions for 

her children or grandchildren, 

or Denver’s, due to the family 

being “adequately provided” 

for through family trusts and 

personally by her. 

Knight’s sister Nicole 

supported her claim to the 

High Court, while their brother 

Stephen did not. 

Nicole confirmed their mother 

had promised each child would 

receive at least $1 million as an 

advance inheritance. 

But actually the money had 

not been gifted to the children 

directly and was instead invested 

into property owned by Libby 

and Denver, in which the 

children could live.

Her daughter Lisa Knight is 

fighting for a stake in the 

estate and claims she had 

been guaranteed at least 

$1 million. 

Nicole, who fell out with 

Denver and Libby in the years 

leading up to Libby’s death, 

occupied a property in Australia 

with help from the couple and 

Stephen had a home bought for 

him in Christchurch. 

Knight and her children were 

provided an $800,000 home, also 

in Christchurch, for which she 

met the costs of rates, insurance, 

repairs and maintenance. 

“[Knight] agreed that it 

would be put into a trust, with 

Libby and Denver as two of the 

three trustees, although she 

understood the house would be 

hers when Libby and Denver 

died,” the decision said. 

But when Knight and her 

then-fiance purchased a home 

together in 2017, she wanted to 

sell the Christchurch property in 

order to release her capital. 

Denver refused to sell the 

Christchurch property unless 

he was registered as an owner of 

their new home. 

The decision said Knight 

was unable to contribute to the 

purchase price of their new home 

and the couple were “forced” to 

sell it at a loss. 

In order to extricate herself 

from financial control, Knight 

later negotiated a change to 

the ownership structure of the 

Christchurch house. 

She received a sizeable 

payment in return for being 

removed as a beneficiary to the 

trust controlling the house and 

by agreeing not to bring any 

claims against Libby’s estate.

Hopes dashed as pumpkin smashed

WITH SIX weeks until the 

weigh-in for a friendly giant 

pumpkin growing competition a 

serious contender has fallen out 

of contention – literally. 

Giant Pumpkins of Prebbleton 

organiser Marcus Peters is in 

his third year of growing the 

oversized vegetable, but has 

suffered a setback after a 50kg 

pumpkin fell from a home-made 

hammock and smashed into 

pieces. 

“I had this great vision of 

growing a pumpkin vine up and 

on to the roof,” he said. 

“I thought: ‘Wow, wouldn’t it 

be cool if I could pull off growing 

a giant pumpkin on the roof’, 

and I was there. But one didn’t 

quite make it to the roof it was 

hanging near the guttering, so 

I had an elaborate sling system, 

but one of the hooks failed as the 

pumpkin was 50kg. 

“Building a structure was on 

the day’s to-do list, then I heard 

thump, I just knew what had 

happened, and my heart sank.” 

However he still has “a couple 

of other contenders” – including 

a large green pumpkin which 

he discovered in his 250sq 

m pumpkin patch as he was 

cleaning up the remains of his 

broken potential prize winner. 

Twelve people have so far 

expressed interest in growing 

pumpkins to enter the friendly 

weigh-in. 

“It is the first year of this 

community based effort, but 

there’s definitely enough people 

taking part to give it a presence 

at the market in April,” Peters 

said. 

Prebbleton resident Helen 

Goy is hoping to grow a huge 

pumpkin this season, and is 

enjoying learning more about the 

process while having a bit of fun. 

“I bought the seeds at a 

fundraiser for the Prebbleton 

School PTA last year, and I hope 

my green fingers will help me get 

there, it’s a lot of fun.”

“I check them every day and 

they seem to have grown more 

overnight, one is about the size 

of a watermelon at the moment, 

and I’ve just found another one 

so I’ve made tents and beds for 

them to keep their heads and 

little bottoms dry.” 

Peters says the changeable 

weather has had a significant 

effect this year. “Pumpkins need 

consistent heat, but it has been 

hot then wet, then hot and wet, 

and recently colder than usual, 

so we’ve had a few fatalities along 

the way, as pumpkin succumb to 

mildew or rot.”

Former inmate’s evidence heard

A FRESHLY released inmate 

met with a potential murder 

suspect and serving prison guard 

twice David Benbow while a 

police investigation was at its 

height but denied helping cover 

his tracks, a court heard this 

week. 

Ex-Corrections officer 

Benbow, 54, who is standing 

trial for the alleged murder 

of Halswell builder Michael 

McGrath who disappeared on 

May 22, 2017, and whose body 

has never been found, was an old 

school and rugby league mate of 

Rua Pomare. 

The High Court in 

Christchurch heard a statement 

from Pomare, who has died since 

talking to police in 2017. 

He had talked about knowing 

both Benbow and McGrath for 

most of his life, growing up in 

Halswell. 

Pomare had gone to 

kindergarten, primary and high 

school with Benbow, playing 

league and fishing in their teens 

at Lyttelton wharf, Diamond 

Harbour, at Birdlings Flat, even 

flatting together a couple of 

times. 

He’d never seen Benbow 

become aggressive except on a 

rugby league field, he told police. 

Pomare did a stint in prison, 

the court heard, from July 2014 

to April 2017. 

The friends hadn’t had any 

contact while he was inside 

but in February or March 2017 

Pomare had been in the visitors’ 

yard when he looked up and 

saw Benbow in prison guard 

uniform, the court heard. 

They both got a shock but 

chatted for a few minutes – about 

how Benbow had become a 

prison guard, how his children 

were, “general stuff” - before 

Benbow was called away. 

Once he was released from 

prison, Pomare said he hadn’t 

had any contact with Benbow 

until he saw in the media that

McGrath had gone missing and 

Benbow was being named as a 

person of interest. 

He texted Benbow and said he 

was going to his mother’s house 

on Queen’s Birthday if he wanted 

to catch up. 

Benbow showed up on a 

pushbike, the court heard, 

and they chatted for 30-45 

minutes, about how he was 

handling things, why police 

were searching his Candys 

Rd property, and how he was 

“frustrated” about the situation. 

“I could see it was affecting 

him,” Pomare told police. 

He asked him directly: “What 

did you do with him?” 

Benbow replied that he didn’t 

do it, the court heard. 

He reportedly told Pomare

that police were looking up the 

wrong tree, which he took it to 

mean that he was innocent. 

Benbow also allegedly told 

Pomare that one of his children 

had seen their mother, his 

former partner Joanna Green, 

who had left him on March 

3, kissing McGrath and had 

seemed “very pissed off”. 

The old friends caught up

again on July 2 after Pomare sent 

him another text message, the 

court heard. 

Again at the house of Pomare’s 

mother, they chatted and again 

the “obvious question” for 

Pomare was whether he had 

killed McGrath. 

Benbow reportedly replied 

“no”. 

Pomare later denied doing 

anything to assist Benbow, 

the court heard. His mother 

Marjorie also denied that her son 

had helped Benbow in any way. 

Another close friend of 

Benbow’s today, Lyn-Marie 

Borlase, told the jury about 

supporting him while he was 

under police investigation. 

She asked him three times if he 

had killed McGrath. 

On the first occasion that she 

put it to Benbow, he allegedly 

“just had his head down”. 

“But that was his demeanour 

the whole time he was with me 

that night,” Borlase said. 

The second time Benbow 

allegedly replied: “Well, what do 

you think Lynny?” 

And on the third occasion, he 

became angry, she told the court. 

Benbow’s defence team has 

warned the jury of “investigative 

bias” and “tunnel vision” from 

police early in its investigations. 

The Crown allege he lured 

McGrath to his semi-rural 

lifestyle property in Halswell 

on Monday, May 22, 2017 and 

used his .22 semi-automatic rifle, 

with suppressor and sub-sonic 

ammunition, to shoot him dead 

and then dispose of his body, 

just weeks after learning he was 

seeing his ex-partner Green and 

telling a counsellor he wanted to 

“annihilate” him. 

McGrath’s body has never 

been found – and nor has 

a murder weapon - despite 

widespread searches of 

properties, rivers, waterways, 

and the city dump. The trial, 

before Justice Jonathan Eaton,

SailGP race

dolphins 

spotted

SAILGP RACE organisers will 

now rely on sighting hector’s 

dolphins to keep them safe 

during next month’s racing on 

Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour. 

A decision not to use a 

deterrent device means the 

mammals will now be free 

to swim where they like, and 

racing will be called off if they 

are seen or heard anywhere near 

the racecourse and high speed 

catamarans. 

Organisers for the March 18- 

19 event are employing several 

detection strategies focusing 

on four zones in the harbour, 

stretching from the harbour 

mouth to the racecourse. 

The SailGP Marine Mammal 

Management Plan states if 

dolphins are detected in zone

racecourse, the boats will be 

ordered to stop. 

Once racing has stopped, a 

SailGP spokesperson said the 

yachts “will simply wait until 

(the dolphins) leave”. 

In zones one or two, dolphins 

will be reported and tracked. If 

they are in zone three, racing 

will be delayed. 

SailGP is experienced with the 

issues and understands the risk, 

the spokesperson said. 

A key detection strategy will 

include trained dolphin observers 

and volunteers, stationed 

along both sides of the harbour 

and in boats, looking out for 

dolphins. Experts say they may 

locate some of the dolphins but 

not all of them due to difficulty 

seeing the mammals at any distance, 

particularly if the water 

comfort, control

measure will see a drone with 

artificial intelligence criss-cross 

the harbour. 

However, the drone can’t be 

used when the boats are racing

using two AI programmed 

hydrophones attached to buoys 

in the harbour, will operate just 

east of the racing zone. They will 

monitor continuously for the 

echo-location of dolphins. 

Underwater acoustic expert 

Dr Matt Pine was consulted on 

the MMMP and has now been 

employed to do the listening. 

He said the devices can pick 

up dolphins pinging, or echolocating, 

up to a few hundred 

metres away, depending on 

how noisy they are. 

“We expect in murky 

waters like Lyttelton Harbour 

and in busy environments, they 

will be echo-locating most of the 

time,” Pine said. 

However, dolphin expert 

Professor Liz Slooten, formerly 

with the Zoology Department at 

Otago University, disagreed. 

“He (Pine) is wrong,” she said. 

“When there is lots of noise it 

makes more sense for a dolphin 

to listen using its ears, because 

sound carries much further than 

echo-location. The dolphins may 

simply turn their echo-location 

off,” she said. 

SailGP and ChristchurchNZ 

will also be relying on spectators 

and race officials to report 

dolphin sightings.

single 

dolphin 

detection 

measure, said race organisers. 

Said SailGP head of event and 

commercial director Karl Budge: 

“Based on the advice of (the 

Department of Conservation) 

and other experts, we maintain 

full confidence in the efficacy of 

the plan.”

“We wouldn’t speculate 

on who might be held 

responsible if an incident 

was to occur,” said DOC

First XI eye maiden 

Gillette Cup spot

ROLLESTON College’s first XI 

are a step closer to qualifying 

for the Gillette Cup after beating 

Lincoln High School for the first 

time last week. 

Opener Ryder Allin scored 109 

not out to lead Rolleston to 230/1 

from 35 overs at Weedons, while 

his opening partner Nathan Edge 

scored 66. 

James Willats was the star 

bowler for Rolleston, taking 3/3 

from 2.2 overs in the 30 deg C 

heat, before his side knocked 

Lincoln over for just 93. 

Marshall Kahn and Billy Pascoe 

took two wickets each to help cement 

the 137-run victory. 

Rolleston are now preparing 

for the next stages of Gillette Cup 

qualification, while Lincoln has 

been knocked out alongside Rangiora 

High and Darfield High. 

The school has had a first XI for 

three years. Rolleston College was 

founded in 2017. This is the first 

time the team have made it past 

the first stage of the Gillette Cup 

qualification. 

VICTORY: Rolleston College passed their first hurdle on the 

way to qualifying for the Gillette Cup, beating Lincoln High 

by 137 runs. 

Rolleston will play regional 

round-robin matches in the competition. 

The winner will then move on 

to the regional finals with the

Young drivers splash the cash

IT WAS Generation Z v a 

roomful of Boomers. 

And for three of the sport’s 

youngest and brightest at the 

NZB National Standardbred 

Yearling Sale at Karaka and 

Christchurch they proved their 

talents aren’t just confined to the 

race track. 

The country’s top junior 

driver Sarah O’Reilly splashed 

out $25,000 on a Sweet Lou 

filly, fellow 23-year-old Korbyn 

Newman outlaid $17,500 on 

a Captain Crunch colt, and 

24-year-old Sam Payne bought 

three yearlings for a combined 

total of over $30,000, including 

one that left him gobsmacked. 

It was Lot 57 at Karaka, a 

Bettor’s Delight – Georgia’s Belle 

colt for $16,000. 

“I could not believe a Bettor’s 

colt went for that – I thought 

there must be something wrong 

with him, I would have thought 

he was worth $50,000 to 70,000,” 

said Payne. 

“I was just hoping he didn’t 

have his leg on back to front.” 

As it turns out the colt was 

just fine, and Payne is looking 

forward to seeing what happens 

next. 

“It is unbelievable,” he said. 

He bought another Bettor’s 

Delight – this time a filly (Saddle 

Ridge) for $7500, and then a Fear 

The Dragon – Divine Diva filly 

for $9000. 

“I own them myself and I’ll 

break them in and try and 

syndicate them and if not I’ll 

keep them myself.” 

Payne has bought yearlings at 

the sales in the past – just not 

in these numbers. “It’s a big ask 

(spending a total of $32,500) but 

it’s all part of building a good 

race team.” 

Both Payne and O’Reilly come 

from established racing families. 

For O’Reilly it was the first 

horse she’s bought “all by

myself”. Previously she’d been to 

many sales usually alongside her 

father Gerard, in much the same 

way as Payne has seen his dad

“It was a bit random – I didn’t 

look at the catalogue until the 

day before the sale,” said O’Reilly, 

“I liked the look of her in the 

photos but in person she looked 

even better and was a good 

mover.” 

She duly bought the Sweet 

Lou – Mermaid Explorer filly for 

$25,000. 

“I had a budget of under 

the $20,000 mark but I’m 

my own boss so it worked out 

okay.” 

So how was the experience? 

“It was a bit scary – but good.” 

While Mermaid Explorer was 

an unraced Bettor’s Delight 

mare, O’Reilly said a bit of 

research showed plenty of good 

winners in her family. 

“Her sisters left the likes of 

Cover Girl, Town Echo and 

Lauraella.” 

Town Echo was the most 

prolific winner with 12 from 44 

starts.

For Newman the experience 

of buying Lot 255, a Captain 

Crunch – Dreaminthemaking 

colt was “an adrenaline rush”. 

It was his first purchase at the 

sales. 

He’d seen the horse up close 

during the pre-sale on-farm 

parades and after consulting the 

likes of John Dunn and Regan 

Todd decided he was keen. 

Newman bought the colt along 

with his father Greg and uncle 

Mark. “We would have gone up 

to $35,000 so we think we got 

a bargain. We were bidding on 

another two earlier in the day 

and got outbid . . . we were only 

going to buy one horse and we 

are happy with what we’ve got. 

“He seems a cool dude.” 

While his and O’Reilly’s new 

purchase have already been “on 

the jogger”, Payne is giving his 

trio a week or so to get used to 

their new surroundings. 

“Ideally it would great to have 

a two-year-old up and going but 

we’ll start breaking them in and 

go from there.”

Earn and Grow 

Support for businesses and people looking for work are being offered over the 

month with the return of Learn Earn Grow Selwyn. 

Everything from business mentoring to return to work support, cross cultural 

communication and being accessible will be covered over the month. 

How should we grow — 

tell us what you think 

How do we want Greater Christchurch to grow and how will we get around? That’s 

among what Selwyn residents are now being asked to shape an ambitious growth 

and transport plan for the region. 

The Whakawhanake Kāinga Komiti (Urban Growth Partnership for Greater 

Christchurch) are inviting people living in Christchurch City, Selwyn and 

Waimakariri Districts to take part in the discussion to shape where and how their 

area will grow in the future and how its transport infrastructure can be futureproofed. 

The Huihui Mai (let’s come together) public engagement runs to 

Sunday 26 March. 

It asks if the Partnership’s work on how we accommodate more people and 

business in Greater Christchurch, while also providing a high quality of life for 

our people, a thriving economy and protecting our environment, is in line with the 

community’s aspirations. 

This work also includes a potential ‘turn up and go’ mass rapid transit system, 

which both responds to and encourages growth along its proposed route from 

central Christchurch City north to Belfast and south-west to Hornby. 

After a popular first year, the Learn Earn Grow Selwyn events series returns 

with the Council once again partnering with employment, business and 

community groups to run seminars, workshops and other events offering 

advice and support for people at all stages of their employment from those 

looking for a job, to people looking to hire, or grow their business. 

The events kick off today (Wednesday 1 March) with a seminar supporting 

businesses to recruit and support disabled employees, as well as keys to 

accessible customer engagement. 

One on one business mentoring sessions will begin the next day with business 

mentors from the Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce offering 

45 minute sessions on 2, 8, 22 March, 9.15am–1pm at Te Ara Ātea (bookings 

required). A returning to work series will also be on offer in the evenings for 

those who have been out of the work place and are looking to get work 

ready again. 

A business health check follows on Tuesday 7 March with legal experts 

from Parry Field Lawyers on hand to help business owners and managers on 

keeping up with all the legal requirements and understand how to keep your 

business 'healthy'. The session will help understand what questions you should 

be asking to assess the health of your business. 

Events later in the month will include the popular Selwyn Business Breakfast 

and Selwyn Jobs Fair. For more information on sessions or to book visit

Feedback will be used to inform plans about transport, infrastructure and urban 

planning, which will then go out to the public for consultation later this year. 

Greater Christchurch’s population is forecast to double to a million people over the 

next 60 years or even earlier, following rapid growth over the past 15 years. 

For Selwyn, a key balance is around retaining high-quality agricultural land while 

managing ongoing growth says Selwyn District Mayor Sam Broughton. 

“Selwyn is a strong farming area with extremely fertile land, much of which is 

already being used for food production. It is important that this high-quality 

agriculture land is retained for the use it is best suited to and not lost to housing 

development,” he says. 

“At the same time we recognise that we need to accommodate our growing 

population and that is why the plan for future growth is so important for 

our region.”

Selwyn 'adopts' Gisborne to help with 

cyclone recovery 

Selwyn is 'adopting' Gisborne to support the region with its recovery from 

Cyclone Gabrielle. 

Selwyn has joined the Local Government New Zealand Adopt-a-Community 

programme adopting the Tairāwhiti Gisborne District, with residents 

encouraged to give to the Tairāwhiti Mayoral Relief Fund. Gisborne was 

among the regions hit hardest by Cyclone Gabrielle, with thousands of houses 

damaged, an ongoing water crisis and massive infrastructure damage. 

Donating to the Mayoral Relief Fund 

gives direct support to the community for 

medium to long-term recovery projects, 

Mayor Sam Broughton says "We’ve all seen 

the devastation and we’ve heard from so 

many Selwyn residents looking to help. 

Adopting a community gives us a focus for 

helping, and allow us to help beyond the 

initial needs. We know from the disasters 

we’ve experienced here in Canterbury that 

recovery is a long road. 

"We are a rural community of a similar size 

to Gisborne, we share many connections, 

we’re whānau and as whānau we stick 

together for the long haul. So we’re asking our Selwyn community to get 

behind Gisborne.” 

Councillors and volunteers will be collecting at Selwyn Sounds on 4 March 

with further fundraisers being planned. 

“This is a whole community effort, if you’re a business, a school, a community 

group looking for a way to help, this is for you. Get creative, have fun and let’s 

get fundraising for Gisborne,” Mayor Sam says.

How are you finding using Council facilities? 

Selwyn residents are being asked what they think about the district's many community facilities in 

the annual Customer Experience Survey, which is now open until 12 March. 

The survey will help the Council to understand what people's experiences using the district's pools, 

community centres, halls and libraries have been like and what could be improved. 

There is a survey for each type of facility, so people can fill out one or all—depending on which ones 

they use. Data from the surveys is used by Council in annual reporting and to help it plan for 

the future. 

Council also wants to hear from residents who don't use any of the community facilities or services, 

to gain a better understanding of how more people's needs can be met. 

Last year’s survey revealed that 94 per cent of respondents were satisfied with their experience of 

Council facilities, and more than 70 per cent were happy with the facilities’ suitability, presentation, 

cleanliness, booking process and equipment. 

The 2023 survey is now open until Sunday 12 March, 11.59pm. 

Each person who completes the survey can go into the draw to win one of 10 Selwyn Aquatic 

Centre concession cards.

Thornley takes Franco Norton to 

‘next level’ with winning burst

FRANCO NORTON took 

Gemma Thornley on an 

unexpected and explosive ride 

to win the Fruit Bowl Handicap 

at Cromwell on Sunday. 

The pacer was in need of a 

super-sub driver when Thornley’s 

uncle, Craig, was unable to 

fulfil his commitments at the 

meeting. 

Thornley (left) stepped up 

when duty called and got a feel 

for the outstanding pacer in the 

process. 

While parked in the middle 

stages, the junior driver called 

on the favourite to give a big 

effort – and he unleashed an 

explosive burst of speed. 

“When I asked him, he just 

went next level,” Thornley said. 

She admitted there was some 

pressure on her when she was 

handed the chance to drive the 

favourite in a feature event. 

But eventually it only added 

to the thrill of her victory. 

“Especially when it is a good 

race like this, there was a bit of 

pressure driving a horse like 

him. It was a last-minute pickup 

drive and I was pleased I 

could deliver.” 

Thornley was in outstanding 

form last year and continued to 

put on a show at Cromwell. 

Franco Norton’s win was the 

middle leg of a winning treble 

for the junior driver. 

Thornley started the meeting 

with a win in race 1 driving 

Superfast Gorsey. Her 

Greenpark-based father Chris 

trains Gorsey. 

Thornley later won with the 

David Mitchell-trained, Asian 

Elvis, in race 9. Rough 

steps late in his effort for 

second at Cromwell on 

Friday potentially cost the 

pacer victory, but Asian Elvis 

delivered a much more polished 

display on Sunday. 

Thornley’s victories at 

Cromwell raised $1800 for 

women’s cancer research as part 

of the Australasian Harness 

Racing Teal Campaign. 

“It was good to get another 

win for Team Teal and keep 

making money for a good 

cause,” Thornley said after her 

win with Franco Norton. 

It was the reinswoman’s first 

is in her first year as a Team 

Teal ambassador and has 

registered six wins raising a 

total of $3600 so far in the sixweek

Questions answered about 

new winter grazing regulations 

Ellesmere Sustainable Agriculture 

is teaming up with staff from 

Environment Canterbury to offer an 

opportunity for farmers from across 

the region to find out more about the 

new winter grazing regulations that 

came into effect in November 2022. 

After the last winter grazing 

workshop that ESAI held back in 

October, farmers remain concerned 

about the new rules and how they 

are going to impact farming here in 

Canterbury. 

Many farmers are experiencing 

increasing pressure with the 

introduction of a host of new rules 

and regulations. ESAI has recognised 

that some farmers still require support 

and advice to assist navigating the new 

requirements. 

This follow up drop-in day has been 

organised to enable farmers a chance to 

come along and get more clarification 

on what needs to be done and get some 

one-on-one time with local specialised 

ECan staff. 

Environment Canterbury’s priority 

this season is education and so the four 

staff members that will be attending 

will be on hand to answer any 

questions farmers might have about 

the new regulations and can even 

help with your grazing management 

plan, determining if it is a permitted 

activity or if you require a consent and 

even help with consent applications if 

required.

Strong wool price indicator to 

give market insight

Ryan Cosgrove first got the idea for a wool 

data company while sitting in the auction 

room with a pen and paper. 

It was then he decided something needed 

to change which has subsequently led to 

the launch of his start-up Fusca which has 

partnered with Wool Impact to develop a 

strong wool price indicator. 

Mr Cosgrove has been involved in the 

wool industry for 12 years. His day job 

is business development manager (fibre 

products) at Carrfields New Zealand and he 

is also chairman of Campaign for Wool New 

Zealand. 

It had been a “passion project” to use the 

data collected to gain better insight into the 

market and communicate that data back to 

the wool grower, Mr Cosgrove said. 

There used to be a strong wool price 

indicator but that disappeared with the 

demise of the wool board, he said. 

Taking a mathematical and analytical 

approach, it would provide a visible and 

consistent benchmark for the sector and 

allowed it to monitor the impact of work 

being undertaken to drive demand and 

value. 

Fusca had the technology to develop 

a commercial data platform that would 

provide farmers and the wool supply chain 

with more detailed and accurate pricing 

data based on the weekly wool auction and 

export data. 

It was working with Wool Impact - a 

collaboration between the Government 

and sheep sector partners under the 

Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund 

- and representatives from each stage of 

the domestic supply chain to develop the 

methodology for the indicator so it was 

robust to seasonal variation and gave “a high 

level view of the health of the industry”.

to historical and up-to-date pricing 

information for all wool types sold and

allow users to personalise reports. 

Growers could load the exact type of 

wool they grew and then only view market 

reports on their wool type, seeing the trends 

and drivers for that type. 

“That’ll be completely new and hopefully 

give growers a feeling of empowerment 

being able to see it through the lens of their 

business,” Mr Cosgrove said. 

“There are a lot of cool people trying to do 

cool things with wool but without a way to 

accurately track value, outside of total FOB 

value, it’s hard to really measure impact. 

We want farmers and wool traders to have 

full visibility and transparency of the prices 

for their wool types and the comparative 

discounts and premiums available,” Mr 

Cosgrove said. 

While awareness needed to be raised as 

to the value of wool as a natural fibre, there 

was also a need to better understand what 

the drivers for value were and be able to 

monitor those, to increase demand and 

value, he said. 

There was no silver bullet for the 

beleaguered strong wool industry but, 

under the Campaign for Wool banner, 

the likes of communication, education 

and connecting with consumers was very 

important. Storytelling was something that 

had been missed in the past, he said. 

He was excited about the launch of Fusca 

and what it could mean, both in its first 

iteration and what it could become. It was 

hoped the indicator would launch at the 

end of March and the first platform would 

be ready for the start of the new season in 

July. 

ANZ’s latest Agri-Focus report said 

wool prices remained lacklustre and would 

need to “lift considerably” to contribute 

positively to farm profits. 

While there were plenty of initiatives 

under development for new uses for wool, 

most were still some way off large-scale 

production and were yet to impact farmgate 

prices.

The last harvest of summer beckons 

Keep on top of your 

garden with these tips 

from Daltons 

Houseplants 

Houseplants prefer to grow in 

relatively high humidity, so it is 

important to mist their 

leaves regularly with lukewarm 

water. This promotes healthy 

plant growth, as well as helping 

keep leaves clean. Inspect plants 

once a week, particularly on the 

underside of leaves, for pests 

such as mealybug or spider 

mites. They can multiple and 

spread quickly to other plants if 

left undetected. 

Report any older houseplants 

that may have become 

rootbound –always use a good 

quality houseplant plant mix and 

ensure the pot you are using has 

drainage holes and is clean. 

Veggie Garden 

Tomatoes should be coming 

to an end. Other vegetables to 

be harvested include, beans, 

beetroot, cabbage, carrots, 

corn, courgettes, cucumbers, 

eggplants, lettuce, melons, 

onions, potatoes, pumpkin, 

radish, silver beet, and spinach. 

Save seeds from varieties of topperforming 

summer vegetables 

such as tomatoes and beans. 

Continue sowing seeds and 

planting seedlings of beans, 

beetroot, cabbage, carrots, 

lettuce, radish, silver beet and 

spinach. 

Plant traditional winter 

vegetable seedlings including, 

broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, 

kale, spinach, and silver beet. 

Check areas for growing winter 

vegetables are raised with good 

drainage in preparation for the 

wet winter months ahead. 

When planting, always add 

fresh compost to the existing 

soil and rotate crops to different 

parts of the vegetable garden. 

Where possible, expand your 

existing vegetable garden to help 

with the household budget. 

Flowering Annuals 

Keep dead-heading plants to 

promote continuous flowering. 

‘Potted colour’ annual varieties 

are very reasonably priced at this 

time of year and will brighten up 

containers or special parts of the 

garden. 

It’s time to consider autumn/ 

winter flower displays so start 

sowing seeds of winter annuals 

e.g. alyssum, calendulas, lobelia, 

primulas, nemesias, pansies, 

polyanthus, snap dragon, 

stock, sweet peas, violas, and 

wallflowers. 

Bulbs 

The end of February marks the 

beginning of the bulb planting 

season. Bulbs thrive in an open, 

sunny position where the soil 

is friable (crumbly) and welldrained. 

Choose fresh, healthy looking 

bulbs early in the season so 

you are getting the best of the 

bunch. Before planting, add 

fresh compost combined with 

Daltons premium bulb mix to 

the existing soil and mix well (to 

about a 1.5 spade depth). 

Create a stunning display 

in spring by planting bulbs 

in groups. If you are going to 

mix varieties together, check 

blooming times and light 

requirements. Varieties to plant 

include anemones, crocus, 

daffodils, freesias, hyacinth, iris, 

jonquil, lachenalias, muscari, 

nerines, ranunculus, tulips, and 

watsonias. 

Mark where you have planted 

your bulbs with a label that 

identifies the species and date of 

planting. 

Strawberries 

Strawberry fruiting will come 

to an end, so leave plants to 

grow runners for next seasons 

plantings. Remove all plants that 

are more than two years old as 

after this time, fruit production 

can start to slow. 

Herbs 

Some herbs will flower and 

‘run-to-seed’ toward the end 

of February. If this happens, 

remove them, and replace with 

fresh new plants. 

You can also save leaves for 

drying – simply place them in a 

shallow tray in a warm, sheltered 

spot with good airflow for 2-3 

weeks until completely dry, 

then store them in an airtight 

container. 

Fruit Trees 

At the end of the month, late 

season plums and peaches will 

be maturing, and apples and 

pears will begin to ripen. 

On citrus trees, small fruit 

are now forming and will ripen 

mid-winter so water consistently 

during this important time. 

Mulch all fruit trees to help 

maintain soil moisture levels to 

aid fruit formation and ripening. 

Fertilise with Daltons premium 

fruit and citrus fertiliser.

T-Roc R adds to VW’s performance line-up 

GET IN QUICK is my advice. 

That is if you want a performance 

car with a high output 

internal combustion engine. The 

automotive world is changing 

quickly, hybrids, electric vehicles 

and models with low emission 

engines will soon dominate the 

global new car market. 

I was watching one of my 

favourite motoring programmes 

on Sky the other night and the 

reference was there’s already a 

huge shift away from high output 

engines in the marketplace. 

At least for the time being, 

Volkswagen is catering for those 

who want power and performance 

and in a stand out package. Sure, 

there’s the quintessential Golf 

GTi, but Volkswagen is marketing 

heavily the R series of performance 

models – Golf R, Tiguan 

R and now T-Roc. I’ve driven all 

three in recent months and this 

evaluation focuses on the T-Roc R 

(R meaning Race). 

The T-Roc sits in the smaller 

side of the sport utility vehicle 

range, it’s sort of a crossover really, 

but what it lacks in stature it certainly 

makes up for in practicality 

and honesty, it will easily cater for 

the small family and has already 

established itself as a success in the 

global marketplace. 

The T-Roc here is priced from 

$43,490, there are four models 

(including the R), the latter sits 

at $71,990, which if you stack 

it beside other performance 

hatchbacks and sedans around 

the same size it’s competitive, but 

bear in mind the Government will 

also have its hand out for a $1660 

fee to subsidise low emission 

vehicles. 

True to its R stablemates, the 

T-Roc gets a 2-litre turbocharged 

engine. I mentioned the Golf GTi, 

well, the R series engines in all 

three variants get a similar engine 

as the GTi but with even greater 

power outputs. 

In R form the four-cylinder unit 

has power outputs of 221kW and 

400Nm and, what’s more, they 

are achieved comprehensively 

across the rev band, Volkswagen 

lists5300 to 6500rpm for peak 

delivery of power with maximum 

torque almost meeting that from 

2000 to 5200rpm, such are the 

specific outputs that there is no 

power drop off at any point from 

idle to the redline. 

And that is the secret to the 

R series cars, the engine is an 

absolute belter with a strong midrange 

surge and dynamics which 

encourage vigorous throttle use. 

That’s because this engine has 

sound, I’m not saying it is noisy, it’s 

not, but it does emit shrieks and 

howls under urgency that is a joy 

to listen to. Add in the subdued 

bark from the exhaust and you 

have a car that from both ends

tempts the driver to muster in acceleration. 

On that subject, Volkswagen 

claim a 4.9sec time to make 

100km/h and the T-Roc R will 

also lunge through a highway 

overtake in 4sec. 

As I mentioned in my introduction, 

engines such as this just 

simply won’t fit with laws and 

environment protocols in years to 

come, how that all plays out I don’t 

know, but I can report that Volkswagen 

has done well to make this 

engine so feisty but reasonably fuel 

efficient. It also lists a 9.3-litre per 

100km/h combined cycle average. 

During my testing time I 

explored the engine’s potential on 

many an occasion, but I took the 

evaluation car back to the dealership 

showing a 10l/100km readout 

that I didn’t think was too bad. At 

100km/h an instantaneous reading 

of 6.1l/100km is achievable, the 

engine quite subdued turning over 

at just 1800rpm. Of course, at that 

speed it is waiting to be unleashed, 

and any throttle provocation will 

send the revs soaring. 

Drive is channelled to all four 

corners using Volkswagen’s 4-Motion 

system, the transmission is 

a seven-speed direct shift system 

which you simply treat like any 

automatic. As you would expect, 

there are paddle shifters on the 

T-Roc, and if you still like to hang 

onto a gearshift, manual changes

can also be carried out at the main 

shifter itself. 

When I refer to the entire Volkswagen 

R series models as being 

race ready, well, effectively they 

are. Sure, you can’t go to a track 

and start racing, but you can have 

a decent amount of fun in a closed 

circuit situation because the T-Roc 

R has functions and systems 

that encourage track use and 

drifting. 

Unfortunately, I’ve never had 

any of the R series models in that 

environment but I can tell you that 

on the open road the T-Roc R is 

an absolute dynamo and will haul 

in dizzy speeds with absolute ease. 

On my favourite open road routes 

it blasted through the tricky tight 

stuff with assurance and composure. 

It sits tightly on the road and 

steers directly on its low profile 

Continental performance rubber 

(235/40 x 19in). With the low 

profile tyres and firm suspension 

you constantly know you are 

driving a performance model, 

but the big bonus is the onboard 

ride is still compliant, occupants 

aren’t jolted when ruts and 

road ripples arrive, while body 

movement over the suspension is 

negligible. 

Hot hatchback buyers are spoilt 

for choice with a plethora of 

lively yet functional performance 

models scattered freely across 

several brands in New Zealand. 

Volkswagen has not made a choice 

easy, choosing between any of 

the three R variants would simply 

come down to the practical aspect 

of what each delivers. For me, 

I’d be hard pressed to go past the 

Tiguan R, even in standard form 

it’s long been a favourite; however, 

the T-Roc delivers much the same 

feel and it also has the benefit of a 

sizeable load area. 

However, it’s what’s at the 

other end that makes the R 

models so special, let’s hope 

that Volkswagen (and other car 

makers) can continue building 

their performance engines for 

many years to come. I know that’s 

a difficult ask when the world is 

demanding lower emissions to 

combat climate change, but I’m 

forever the optimist.

Police say the 25-year-old 

from Burnham recorded 1026 

micrograms of alcohol per 

litre of breath. The lega limit is 

250mcg/l. He was also charged

A DARFIELD farmer has 

spoken of watching a man leap into 

the flooded Hawkins River to try and 

save himself after a helicopter winch 

rescue operation failed. 

Rod May had taken his tractor to 

the scene on Greendale Rd, to try and 

reach the middle-aged man who had 

been clinging to the branches of a tree 

in the rising waters on Sunday night. 

The man had driven into the 

flooded river, escaped from his car 

and ca led emergency services from 

his ce lphone which he managed to 

keep with him. 

Ultimately, a second helicopter 

winch operation plucked the man 

to safety after he was swept downstream. 

It was a happy ending to the 

ordeal which had lasted more than 

three hours. The rescue was among 

several in Canterbury on Sunday in 

flooded rivers. 

May said he and his family had just 

had dinner when a neighbour alerted

Prebbleton Dairy targeted 

four times by youth believes a 

family group conference was a 

waste of time. 

The meeting involved one 

of the teens, a 13-year-old, 

his family, Oranga Tamariki, 

police and four other victims, 

including another dairy 

owner. 

Facilitated by Oranga 

Tamariki, youth justice family 

group conferences are 

intended to help youth take 

responsibility and leave them 

with a plan for the future. 

While the victims could 

speak a the meeting, Sangeet 

Mehta said the decision had 

already been made as to what 

would happen with the youth.

A BAR patron who won $1200 

on the pokies may have been 

targeted by thieves moments after 

she co lected the money. 

A group of men who were in 

the bar a the same time are the 

focus of police inquiries. It is 

believed they watched her being 

paid, and then quickly swooped. 

The incident happened at The 

Famous Grouse Hotel in Lincoln 

two weeks ago. 

After she was paid out a the 

bar, the men who had been 

si ting nearby went over and 

congratulated her. While she was 

distracted the money disappeared 

from her handbag. She only 

realised it was gone after she left 

the hotel. 

Police have taken CCTV 

security camera footage from the 

hotel which shows the men going 

over to the woman and mobbing 

her in a congratulatory way. The 

footage also captures a hand from 

one of the men going towards the

homes for retired greyhounds. The charity says that ex-racing 

greyhounds have not had the same experiences as pet dogs and

If you have just bought your first home or 

already own a property, then the answer to 

this is yes. 

Purchasing a home is one of the biggest 

investments you may make during your 

lifetime. 

It is, therefore, necessary to decide who 

will be the benefactor/s of your property and 

belongings should you suddenly pass away. To 

do this, you need to create a will. A will states 

who receives what in the event of your death. 

According to the Public Trust, over 50% 

of New Zealanders do not have a will. Young 

people, aged from 25 to 39 years, who are 

financially independent, feature highly in this 

area, and yet they are a group more likely to 

indulge in adventurous holidays and take part 

in risky extreme sports. Accumulated assets of 

this age group might include a bike, car, TV, 

house, and furniture, along with a vast range 

of electronic and digital gear. 

With the arrival of a family, having a will in 

place is even more essential and yet, according 

to the survey taken in 2014, only 30% of 25-40 

year-olds, with children, have a will in place. 

A will not only legally takes care of the 

property, and the monetary side of things but 

can also state who will take care of children in 

the event of an untimely death. 

What happens if there is no will 

The lack of a will can create problems 

over who will benefit from the estate - this 

is especially important if there are children, 

de facto relationships, children from 

previous relationships, family members with 

addictions, or where a business is involved. 

Where there is no will, the estate goes into 

‘intestacy’, which means a court will appoint 

an administrator, who does the same job 

as an executor, to manage the estate. The

Four steps to creating a will 

1. Nominate an executor – the person who 

will manage the distribution of your property. 

2. Choose how you want to be buried or 

cremated, and how you want your funeral 

to be held, i.e. small and private, at a church, 

or in a garden. Make sure family or friends 

know in advance what you want to happen, as 

the reading of the will may not be before the 

funeral. 

3. Appoint a guardian/s for your children 

(if under 18) and your pets. Discuss this with 

prospective guardians, so they are prepared 

and understand their responsibility. 

4. Decide who will receive what and how 

much; this may include money, property, 

and personal belongings, as well as selected 

charities.
