ZEPHYR IS preparing to rock 

out in front of the biggest crowd 

they have ever played to on 

Saturday. 

Made up of students from 

Avonside Girls, Christchurch 

Girls and Christchurch Boys’ 

high schools, the band opens 

Selwyn Sounds at Lincoln 

Domain. 

A sell out crowd is expected 

for the day-long music festival, 

which features Blam Blam 

Blam, Sir Dave Dobbyn, Mi-Sex, 

Hoodoo Gurus, Gin Wigmore 

and Stellar*. 

“It means a lot to us. It is 

great to have this opportunity to 

play in front of such a big crowd 

at such a big festival – it 

is so exciting,” said guitarist 

Reuben Anderson, 17 from 

CBHS. The four-piece band was 

previously known as The Jehts, 

which came third at last year’s 

national Smokefree Rockquest 

after winning the Canterbury

Fancy working 

on a steam tug? 

THE STEAM tug Lyttelton 

is calling out for deckhands 

and stokers to help the historic 

vessel continue operating on the 

harbour. 

The Tug Lyttelton Preservation 

Society made the appeal for 

volunteer crew members – and 

no experience is necessary to fill 

the roles. 

Society member Michael 

Fowke said help is needed on the 

wharf and deck. Volunteers are 

also needed to stoke the boiler 

and keep the old tug in shipshape 

condition. 

He said the work is not too 

physical. 

“We are looking for people 

from anywhere in the city to 

help, working a roster.” 

Fowke lives in Rangiora and 

comes in every week to help look 

after the vessel. The Lyttelton tug 

was built in Scotland in 1906 and 

was based at Lyttelton Harbour 

until 1970. Since then, the vessel 

has been taking passengers on 

harbour cruises to the Lyttelton 

Heads each Sunday afternoon 

over summer. The tug is also 

available for functions and private 

charters.

hours on Sunday afternoon and, 

if possible, on Thursdays when 

the vessel if cleaned up and readied

up. The deck crew then prepares 

the passenger areas. “We 

are so grateful to our incredible 

and passionate volunteers to keep 

the tug maintained,” said Fowke.

Zephyr set to blow the crowd away

“It is a big privilege and great 

to experience what is going to 

be a good time. It’s a bit nervewracking 

to be honest, we’ve seen 

the set lists of all the bands. It’s us 

then all these Kiwi legends really, 

so it is a bit nerve-racking to 

know these people are listening 

to us from back stage, waiting to 

go on.” 

Anderson said sharing the 

stage with musicians who have 

decades of experience in the 

industry will be both “exciting” 

and scary. 

“A lot of these people have 

been in the music industry for 20 

to 40 years. It’s intimidating but 

also very exciting to be able to get 

that sort of exposure,” he said. 

After Rockquest, the group 

decided to change their name 

to Zephyr. Bass player Scarlett 

Robson, 17, (CGHS) said the 

members were never really 

happy with the old moniker: “We 

wanted to freshen our image,” 

she said. 

Cawood, 17, said they had 

always planned to change their 

name. “When we came up with 

the name (The Jehts) we quickly 

decided on it, but we wanted to 

expand a bit so decided a name 

change was probably the best 

idea.”

songwriting and musicianship, 

which prompted them to write 

three original songs – The Relay, 

She Ain’t Got No Shame and 

Someplace New. 

Said Anderson: “The way 

we’ve written our originals is 

that I’d come up with some sort 

of riff or idea then I’d take it to 

the band and collectively we’d 

all work on that riff and create 

different sections and Cleo would 

add lyrics and vocal melodies 

and we’d all work together on 

structure from the original idea.” 

The band has similar musical 

influences. 

“Led Zeppelin, we really dig 

The Doors and Jimi Hendrix 

as well. Just that classic 70s 

psychedelic rock,” Anderson said. 

He has been playing guitar for 

two years and was influenced 

by some of the great rock 

guitarists. 

“I just fell in love with that 

sort of guitar work. You know, 

Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray 

Vaughan – all these amazing 

guitar legends, their music was so 

interesting.” 

They are all in year 13 and are 

under the wing of Selwyn Sounds 

director David Parlane. 

Cavell said Parlane’s industry 

contacts have come in handy. 

“It came about through a family 

friend, Debbie Haywood. 

“She talked to (Parlane) and 

said we were a young rock group 

that were trying to promote 

ourselves and he was looking for 

a group to work with so we met 

through that.” 

Cavell was the last to join the 

band. “Thankfully we all just 

ended up liking the same music, 

we never have to argue about 

what style of music we play,” she 

said. 

Robson has been playing bass 

for four years. “For a few years 

before we started the band, we 

all separately had an interest in 

the same music. We just came 

together and it worked out well 

that we loved to play it as well,” 

she said. 

The band plays at The Bower 

in North New Brighton every 

Sunday afternoon, which means 

they need to increase their 

repertoire of cover songs. 

Robson said: “At the 

moment we’re learning a lot of 

covers to do at gigs, including 

Selwyn Sounds, but we’d like 

to focus on making our own 

originals outside of Rockquest 

and expanding our own 

discography.”

THREE PAPANUI players have 

been named in two Junior White 

Sox teams set to travel to a United 

States tournament in June. 

Sydelle Sipiki-Samuelu has 

made the under-18 team, while 

Katerina Sumner and Shyla 

de Latour (non-travelling 

reserve) have been selected in 

the under-16 side. Six other 

Canterbury players have also 

been named in the two sides. 

About 250 teams are 

expected to attend the Top Gun 

invitational tournament in 

Kansas City, Missouri. 

Former White Sox captain and 

Olympian Kiri Shaw will resume 

her role as head coach of the Junior 

White Sox, but will be joined 

by new assistant coach, Carley 

Ratu. 

“You would have to say, 

American girls’ softball is the best 

in the world and we are lucky 

enough to get this opportunity 

to see and compete against the 

best,” Shaw said. “This whole 

experience is going to be massive, 

I can’t think of anything better 

than throwing ourselves into the 

firing line, so to speak.” 

The tournament is the start 

of the Junior White Sox’s 

preparations for the first world 

cup regional qualifers next year, 

ahead of the 2025 U18 softball 

world cup. 

Christ’s and St Margaret’s 

win South Island champs

CHRISTCHURCH schools took 

out all four trophies at the South 

Island secondary schools team 

tennis championships over the 

weekend at Wilding Park. 

Christ’s College was dominant 

in the boys’ championship grade, 

beating St Andrew’s College, 

Ashburton and Malborough 

Boys’ College without dropping 

a match and only three sets. 

Christ’s also won the boys’ cup 

grade, with Tasman Daly, Louis 

de Lautour and Nicholas Rayner 

winning every set at the two-day 

tournament. 

In the girls’ championship 

grade, the contest was a bit 

tighter, with the team title going 

down to the last match between 

St Margaret’s and St Andrew’s. 

After splitting the singles, 

St Margaret’s was victorious, 

winning both doubles matches 

to take the tie 4-2. 

In the cup grade, Avonside 

Girls’ High was unbeaten, 

dropping just 11 games against

teams and the St Margaret’s championship team.

fresh, spicy flavours – perfect for 

a warm midweek evening on the

Gazpacho with thai flavours 

This gazpacho is perfect for a warm 

late summer day. With a hint of thai 

flavours, it will surprise guests expecting 

a traditional gazpacho recipe. Serve on ice 

for extra chill factor. 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

6 medium red tomatoes, roughly 

chopped 

½ telegraph cucumber, chopped 

1 clove garlic 

¼ cup chopped red onion 

½ red chilli, chopped 

2 tsp fish sauce 

1 tsp brown sugar 

1 tsp sesame oil 

¼ cup lime juice 

Salt and pepper, to taste 

¼ cup chopped parsley or coriander 

Directions 

Into a blender place the tomatoes, 

cucumber, garlic, onion, chilli, fish sauce, 

sugar, sesame oil and lime juice, blitzing 

until smooth. 

Season with salt and pepper, place into a 

jar and cool. 

When ready to serve, stir through the 

chopped parsley or coriander. 

Serve on ice cubes with some extra 

sliced chilli and green leaves. 

Salmon bibimbap 

Bibimbap is a korean-style bowl which 

is all about mixing the ingredients 

together to incorporate the flavours and 

the delicious spicy sauce. Change it up by 

trying it with fried chicken or tofu. There 

are endless options for such a dish. The 

secret is in the sauce’s sweet and spicy 

umami flavour. You will find gochujang at 

the supermarket. 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

Sauce 

2 Tbsp gochujang 

2 Tbsp sesame oil 

1 Tbsp runny honey 

1 Tbsp cider vinegar 

2 Tbsp water 

1 tsp black sesame seeds 

1 clove garlic, crushed 

Bowls 

3-4 cups cooked rice 

400g salmon, cut into cubes 

1 apple, cut into sticks 

1 small courgette, grated 

1 carrot, coarsely grated 

1 avocado 

½ lemon 

1 cup coriander, leaves picked 

Directions 

Firstly make the sauce. In a small jug 

combine the gochujang, oil, honey, vinegar, 

water, sesame seeds and garlic, then 

set aside. 

Into your serving bowl place some rice. 

Add the salmon, apple, courgette and 

carrot. 

Peel and cut the avocado into slices, 

place in the bowl and squeeze over a little 

lemon. 

When ready to serve, drizzle with the 

sauce and dot around some coriander. 

Serve at room temperature. 

Sticky eggplant with chickpeas 

and noodles 

Long eggplants are skinnier than the 

regular large purple ones, and cook more 

quickly because of their shape. If you can’t 

find any, chop a large eggplant into 2cm 

cubes. I have used dried organic ramen 

noodles here. 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

2 Tbsp olive oil 

4 long eggplant, sliced 1cm thick 

1 small red onion, chopped 

1 Tbsp grated ginger 

½ cup chopped garlic chives 

1 cup chickpeas, drained 

200g noodles, cooked 

Salt and pepper 

Sauce 

¼ cup soy 

2 Tbsp gochujang 

1 Tbsp runny honey 

1 clove garlic, grated 

¼ cup water 

Directions 

In a large frying pan warm the oil. 

Add the eggplant slices, cooking for 8-10 

minutes until soft. Add the red onion, 

ginger and chives, continuing to cook for 

5 minutes until soft. 

For the sauce, combine in a bowl the soy, 

gochujang, honey, garlic and water. 

Add the chickpeas to the eggplant, then 

add the sauce, cooking until everything 

is well coated. Fold through the noodles, 

season and serve hot.
