PUBLISHER’S
INTRODUCTION
What has come to be known as The Baptist
Catechism finds its origins among the English
Particular Baptists who lived during the
Seventeenth Century. Baptist minister and
historian Joseph Ivimey (1773-1834) informs us that
in June of 1693 the London General Assembly of
Particular Baptist Churches determined
"That a Catechism be drawn up, containing the
substance of the Christian religion, for the instruction of
children and servants, and that brother William Collins
be desired to draw it up." 1
Who was this "brother William Collins"and why was
he entrusted with such an important task? William
Collins (c.1644-1702) was an ordained Baptist
minister who along with Rev. Nehemiah Coxe
(c.1650-1689) served as co-elders at the Petty France
Church in London. Evidence indicates that
Collins, who himself was "a graduate of the famous
1
Joseph Ivimey, A History of the English Baptists
(London: B.J. Holdsworth, 1811), 1:533
v
Westminster School" 2 could be depended upon to
serve the Particular Baptists as an able scholar and
trustworthy theologian, which suggests why he was
selected.
In addition to Collins being specifically selected
to draft up the Catechism, Ivimey also references a
letter written by Collins which reveals he had direct
involvement in managing funds for the Catechism’s
production while also overseeing its distribution. 3
Despite this intimate connection between Collins
and the Catechism, over the years the work would
commonly be associated with another Particular
Baptist minister - Benjamin Keach. As a result, a
majority of subsequent editions would be referred
to as "Keach’s Catechism". In fact, a 1764 edition
included a portrait of Keach opposite of the title
page.
The exact reason for Keach’s association with the
work is not entirely clear, however the most
Occasions (London: John Darby, 1714) as cited by Dr.
Samuel D. Renihan in From Shadow to Substance, The
Federal Theology of the English Particular Baptists 1642-1704
(Oxford: Regents Park College, 2018).
vi
probable solution begins with the appearance of his
name alongside Collins in an ‘advertisement’ to a fifth
printed edition of the Second London Confession
of Faith published in 1720. 4 The advertisement
references both Keach and Collins as owning
"property, right and title" to the Confession of Faith
and its associated Catechism and furthermore
selling those rights to John Marshall, a publisher and
bookseller.
Apart from this evidence, little connects Keach
to the Catechism which suggests it is entirely
reasonable to conclude that William Collins is the
Catechism’s original author, and early manager.
The only extant copy of the Catechism known to
exist is dated 1695 which by that time found the
work in its fifth edition (see facsimile title page). 5
This fifth edition was chosen by PBHB and utilized
for the current republication.
As a publishing guideline when reproducing
historic publications, we wish to allow the original
authors and their writings to speak for themselves.
Great care is given by our copy editor to ensure our
readers receive an accurate republication of the
original. When possible, as a rule, we have sought
to maintain original spelling, punctuation, and
Scripture citations. However, for sake of clarity and
to make this republication useful to the modern
reader spelling and capitalization have been
regularized and modernized throughout, but the
original punctuation and verb forms have been
retained.
This edition of the Baptist Catechism utilizes the
New King James Version for the proof texts
without prejudice to other editions and/or
translations. In not a few instances the language of
the NKJV is reflected in the language of the original
Catechism itself, which makes it a natural choice for
a modern edition.
The 1695 printed edition of the Catechism
followed the traditional manner utilizing letters of
the alphabet (with the exception of omitting j and
v) when citing Scripture proof texts. This has been
changed to numerical citations to make referencing
specific scriptures and their location within the
viii
Catechism more convenient (e.g. referencing how
Eph. 1:4-5 is understood in relationship to the
‘covenant of grace’ would be BC 23.1).
With an added table of Contents and Scripture
Index, we hope this edition will prove to be a useful
and reliable resource in the coming years for Baptist
churches.
For those familiar with the Westminster Shorter
Catechism, the Baptist edition will be familiar.
While retaining many of the doctrinal truths
reflected in the Reformed tradition, alterations to
the doctrine of baptism were carefully made by the
original author in order to harmonize the
Catechism with its parent Confession: The Second
London Baptist Confession of Faith (1677). 6
Since its original publication, The Baptist
Catechism has faithfully served throughout the
centuries as a trusted method by which parents,
children, teachers, and students learn, memorize,
and apply Christian doctrine to their lives.
Our hope is that by making it readily available in
a durable, hardcover edition, it will continue to
serve as an instrument by which current and future
generations will earnestly contend for the "faith
once for all delivered to the saints" (Jude 3).
TO THE READER
Having a desire to shew our near agreement
with many other Christians, of whom we have
great esteem; we some years since put forth a
confession of our faith, almost in all points the
same with that of the Assembly and Savoy, which
was subscribed by the elders and messengers of
many churches baptized on profession of their
faith; and do now put forth a short account of
Christian Principles, for the instruction of our
families, in most things agreeing with the
Shorter Catechism of the Assembly. And this we
were the rather induced to, because we have
commonly made use of that Catechism in our
families: and the difference being not much it
will be more easily committed to memory.
Q. 1-6. Humanity & the Bible
Q. 1: Who is the first and chiefest Being?
A. God is the first and chiefest Being. 1
1 Isa. 44:6. "Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel,
And his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: 'I am the First
and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God.' " 48:12.
"Listen to Me, O Jacob, And Israel, My called: I am He,
I am the First, I am also the Last."
Q. 2: Ought everyone to believe there is a God?
A. Everyone ought to believe there is a God; 1
and it is their great sin and folly who do not. 2
1 Heb. 11:6. But without faith it is impossible to
please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that
He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently
seek Him.
2 Ps. 14:1. The fool has said in his heart, "There is no
God." They are corrupt, They have done abominable
works, There is none who does good.
Q. 3: How may we know there is a God?
A. The light of nature in man, and the works of
God, plainly declare there is a God; 1 but His
Word and Spirit only, do it fully and effectually
for the salvation of sinners. 2
1
The Baptist Catechism
1 Rom. 1:19-20. Because what may be known of God
is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For
since the creation of the world His invisible attributes
are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are
made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they
are without excuse. Ps. 19:1-3. The heavens declare the
glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.
Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals
knowledge. There is no speech nor language Where their
voice is not heard. Acts 17:24. God, who made the
world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven
and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.
2 1 Cor. 2:10. But God has revealed them to us
through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes,
the deep things of God. 2 Tim. 3:15-16. And that from
childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which
are able to make you wise for salvation through faith
which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by
inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
Q. 4: What is the Word of God?
A. The Holy Scriptures of the Old and New
Testament, are the Word of God, and the only
certain rule of faith and obedience. 1
1 2 Tim. 3:16. All Scripture is given by inspiration of
God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
correction, for instruction in righteousness. Eph. 2:20.
Having been built on the foundation of the apostles and
prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner
stone.
Q. 5: May all men make use of the Holy Scriptures?
A. All men are not only permitted, but
commanded and exhorted, to read, hear, and
understand the Holy Scriptures. 1
1 John 5:39. You search the Scriptures, for in them
you think you have eternal life; and these are they which
testify of Me. Deut. 17:18-19. "Also it shall be, when he
sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for
himself a copy of this law in a book, from the one before
the priests, the Levites. And it shall be with him, and he
shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to
fear the LORD his God and be careful to observe all the
words of this law and these statutes." Rev. 1:3. Blessed
is he who reads and those who hear the words of this
prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it;
for the time is near. Acts 8:30. So Philip ran to him, and
heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, "Do you
understand what you are reading?"
Q. 6: What things are chiefly contained in the Holy
Scriptures?
A. The Holy Scriptures chiefly contain what
man ought to believe concerning God, and
what duty God requireth of man. 1
3
The Baptist Catechism
1 2 Tim. 1:13. Hold fast the pattern of sound words
which you have heard from me, in faith and love which
are in Christ Jesus. 3:15-16. And that from childhood
you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to
make you wise for salvation through faith which is in
Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God,
and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction,
for instruction in righteousness.
Q. 7-9. God
Q. 7: What is God?
A. God is a Spirit, 1 infinite, 2 eternal, 3 and
unchangeable 4 in His being, 5 wisdom, 6 power, 7
holiness, 8 justice, goodness, and truth. 9
1 John 4:24. "God is Spirit, and those who worship
Him must worship in spirit and truth."
2 Job 11:7-9. "Can you search out the deep things of
God? Can you find out the limits of the Almighty? They
are higher than heaven--what can you do? Deeper than
Sheol--what can you know? Their measure is longer than
the earth And broader than the sea."
3 Ps. 90:2. Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even
from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
4 Jas. 1:17. Every good gift and every perfect gift is
from above, and comes down from the Father of lights,
with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
The Baptist Catechism
5 Exod. 3:14. And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO
I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children
of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.' "
6 Ps. 147:5. Great is our Lord, and mighty in power;
His understanding is infinite.
7 Rev. 4:8. The four living creatures, each having six
wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do
not rest day or night, saying: "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God
Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!"
8 Rev. 15:4. "Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and
glorify Your name? For You alone are holy. For all
nations shall come and worship before You, For Your
judgments have been manifested."
9 Exod. 34:6-7. And the LORD passed before him
and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, merciful
and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness
and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving
iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing
the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the
children and the children's children to the third and the
fourth generation."
Q. 8: Are there more gods than one?
A. There is but one only, the living and true
God. 1
1 Deut. 6:4. "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the
LORD is one!" Jer. 10:10. But the LORD is the true
God; He is the living God and the everlasting King. At
His wrath the earth will tremble, And the nations will
not be able to endure His indignation.
Q. 9: How many persons are there in the Godhead?
A. There are three persons in the Godhead: the
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; and these
three are one God, the same in essence, equal
in power and glory. 1
1 1 John 5:7. For there are three that bear witness in
heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and
these three are one. Matt. 28:19. Go therefore and make
disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Q. 10-11. God’s Decrees
Q. 10: What are the decrees of God?
A. The decrees of God are His eternal purpose,
according to the counsel of His will, whereby
for His own glory, He hath foreordained
whatsoever comes to pass. 1
1 Eph. 1:4. Just as He chose us in Him before the
foundation of the world, that we should be holy and
without blame before Him in love. 11. In Him also we
have obtained an inheritance, being predestined
according to the purpose of Him who works all things
according to the counsel of His will. Rom. 9:22-23.
What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make
His power known, endured with much longsuffering the
vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, and that He
might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels
of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory.
Q. 11: How doth God execute His decrees?
A. God executeth His decrees in the works of
creation and providence.
