Where We’re Eating 

Here’s what the EZ team were chowing on this week 

Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Poppi’s Brick Oven Pizza in Wildwood. It’s across the 

street from one of their sister properties, Dogtooth Bar & Grill on New 

Jersey Avenue. 

The vibe: It was a busy Saturday night in Wildwood with a cheer-

leading competition being held at the Convention Center, so we were 

grateful to get a table out on their covered, and heated, patio. This is our 

preferred spot to sit when we visit Poppi’s, especially in the summertime 

— it’s spacious and a bit more relaxed. Inside, however, is just as 

good when you want to be at the center of all the action. They have an 

open kitchen where you can see their beautiful pizza oven and smell the 

garlic and oregano that hits every dish. Which brings us to our delicious 

dishes... 

The food: Dan and Nicole had been looking forward to this night all 

week. It’s been a while since we’ve stopped at Poppi’s and Italian food is 

our favorite. It was also a good choice because they’re BYOB, and Nicole 

gave up drinking alcohol for Lent... no temptations here. Poppi’s does 

offer a selection of Hawk Haven wines, so they keep things local while 

offering a little something to pair with your pasta. Speaking of... Dan 

enjoyed chicken marsala and Nicole went for the ravioli in their vodka 

sauce. This was after we scarfed down parmesan truffle fries and crispy 

rice balls. It’s safe to say we boxed up our leftovers, which we enjoyed 

on Sunday night. We skipped dessert — unheard of for us — but we 

couldn’t gorge ourselves too much. It wouldn’t be right... right? OK 

FINE, we went for ice cream at Cool Scoops in North Wildwood afterwards. 

We tried to hold off, but it’s just not in our nature. 

The takeaway: Poppi’s is open year-round and a great spot for the 

whole family. Seriously, what’s better than homemade Italian cuisine? 

Paninis, pasta, pizza... sounds like a homerun to us! And if you’re looking 

for something to do with the kids, Poppi’s offers a kids’ pizza-making 

workshop on select Saturdays and will continue through April. Visit

Early March is a difficult time to be 

a bird watcher. We are still several 

weeks away from the first songbird 

migrants, and we yearn for signs of 

Spring. Well, here’s one — Canada 

Geese are pairing up by mid-month and soon, 

females will be incubating eggs. Aren’t you 

impressed? Or do you deem Canada Geese 

not worthy of attention? Wrong, again. There 

was a time and not long ago that Canada 

Geese were rare in New Jersey, found here in 

small numbers in winter. In summer the birds 

were in the Arctic and Subarctic. Now they 

are native. 

What happened? We did. First, we cut 

down all the forest and then manicured our 

landscape to be open and water rich, like 

tundra and golf courses and corporate lawns, 

perfect goose habitat. On top of this game 

management agencies began managing in 

favor of increasing the goose population. They 

succeeded and by the 1950s surplus birds 

went prospecting for new ponds and marshes 

to populate. By the 1960s, I daresay, there was

not a suitable pond or wetland in the Garden 

State that did not host a pair of geese. Soon, 

they were here in plague proportions, a pest 

on corporate campuses, the bane of golf club 

groundskeepers. 

New Jersey’s Canada Goose population is 

so large the birds have taken to nesting in salt 

marsh, a habitat they eschewed even in winter 

but once home to the Snow Goose whose 

wintering flocks, once numerous, have all but 

disappeared from the Bayshore region. And 

the population is increasing, not declining. 

So what’s up? Climate change and agricultural 

practices. 

Where Snow Geese once foraged on 

salt marsh grass roots, now they shortstop 

in northern New Jersey where decreased 

snow cover puts waste corn and soybeans in 

Hunterdon County within reach of their bills 

all winter. Nature is dynamic, ever changing. 

While I miss the annual influx of Snow Geese, 

I revel in the abundance of Canada Geese we 

enjoy, now. Few sounds are as evocative as 

the resonant two-note bark of Canada Geese. 

Aldo Leopold once wrote an essay about it 

and don’t forget the U.S. Fish and Wildlife 

Service regarded the goose so highly, they 

made it their emblematic bird. So here’s to the 

Canada Goose, the goose of the moment. Fifty 

years from now, who is to say? Populations 

rise, populations fall. Someday we might be 

telling young birders that Canada Goose was 

found on every pond, and they’ll think us 

deluded.

GO BIRDS! 


Don’t mind me, I’m just ranting. The 

Oscars are this Sunday, and my 

love/hate relationship with them 

grows. As usual, some nominations 

have me baffled. Some movies that 

got multiple nominations are just… okay, 

know what I mean? And I loved the film that 

got the most nods. But it needs to stop, and I 

know how. Ready for this? Limit the number 

of nominations for any one movie to three. 

Wait, hear me out! 

The Banshees of Inisherin. Can you respect 

a movie without admiring it? Can you “get 

it“ but still somehow miss it? This movie was 

tough, but its life lessons were not lost on me. 

Sometimes friendships don’t work out. You 

need to leave people be. You need to check 

your mental illness. So, when it comes to the 

themes of that movie, you could say I’m able 

to “put my finger on it” — in fact, I’m able to 

put a few fingers on it. But nine Oscar noms? 

No. 

How about Top Gun: Maverick? Great action 

flick, right? Maybe even above par. Definitely 

had a lot of good stuff going on. But then 

again, so did some of the Mission Impossible 

movies from Tom Cruise, but they didn’t get 

any Oscar nods. Top Gun got six... that’s kind 

of over the top. OK, I know I have to stop. 

And Elvis? Well done, of course. You have 

to be an outstanding actor to go up against all 

the impersonators Vegas has to offer. So good 

job all the way around, but eight nominations? 

Look, don’t be cruel — but just limit that num- 

ber. Did I promise I would stop? How much 

did we learn from this film? The Colonel was a 

manipulator, Elvis was on uppers and downers. 

He gyrated. Got it. Not sure how much we 

need to reinforce all that. 

Meantime, wonderful films like The 

Woman King and Devotion (which I will review 

here soon) are snubbed. C’mon, Oscar, stop 

handing out nominations like Jell-O shots to 

millennials in a crowded nightclub or those 

crappy little Halloween candies you give the 

kids like every year. Oh, you know exactly 

what I’m talking about, cheapo. The Dum 

Dum lollipops and Tootsie Rolls. You need to 

grab heaping handfuls to make it worth the 

kids’ while to even show up. I may watch the 

Oscars this Sunday, or not. Cast a wider net, 

Oscar. And start by limiting nominations.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, rollerskate at Convention Hall! 

Oldsters have been complaining 

about youngsters forever. Almost 

3000 years ago, Socrates complained, 

”The children now love 

luxury; they have bad manners, 

contempt for authority; they show disrespect 

for their elders and love chatter in 

place of exercise.” Recently, researchers at the 

University of California at Santa Barbara have 

found one reason we complain — we don’t 

remember our younger selves. We forget how 

impulsive, antsy and ill-informed we were. 

We misremember our sassy comments and 

undone chores, so we expect teenagers to act 

like 50-year-olds without lumbar problems. 

The teenagers I encounter are, by and 

large, charming. Parents can get a glimpse of 

their kids’ delightful public faces by meeting 

them on the move. Take your teens roller skating, 

the wholesome activity that has always 

had a rebellious streak. 

Roller skating’s radical history began at 

the beginning — women were allowed to participate 

from the time the quad-skate was 

designed in 1863. Before women were allowed 

to dine alone at restaurants, shop without 

an escort, serve on a jury or cast a ballot, 

they were welcomed in roller rinks. Black 

Americans, limited to one night a week in segregated 

roller rinks, forged community connections 

there that helped in the fight for civil 

rights. Segregation had been illegal in Illinois 

for 60 years when protesters in Chicago forced 

a whites-only roller rink to allow black skaters 

in 1946, and roller skating was a visible part of 

the protests against police brutality in 2020. 

And, in 1914, a protest by kids in Tampa took 

down a law that made it “unlawful for any 

person to skate or use roller skates for the 

purpose of skating.” Offenders — or “kids on 

roller skates” — could be sentenced to 10 days 

in jail. That law was later repealed. 

You’ll find little to complain about while 

roller skating at Convention Hall, with its 

retro vibe and view of the ocean. It’s a Cape 

May tradition, updated by the flashing lights 

on the littlest skates. Sure, you’ll see some 

teens horsing around, but you’ll also see them 

teaching little kids and lending a hand to their 

fallen parents. Parents must accompany children 

to the roller skating sessions, which run 

through March 26. Admission is $5 per person 

for skaters and non-skaters. Guests may bring 

their own skates or rent them, $5 for regular 

skates, $7 for in-line skates. Sessions are generally 

Fridays 4-6 and 6:30 to 8:30, Saturdays

Dear Answer Lady 

I am having a dinner party. I do this about 

six times a year and the whole point is so I 

can do the cooking. One of the women who 

attends, who is new to our group, insists on 

bringing appetizers. Initially I said yes, but 

I discovered that she brings so much food, 

no one is hungry by the time we are ready for 

dinner. I was furious and when I asked her 

not to bring anything the next time – she did 

anyway. There is no way I cannot invite her; 

she married one of our close friends last year. 

What do I do without making myself look like 

an alley cat? — Meow 

Dear Meow, 

You are right to be offended. It is, after all, 

your party. The Answer Lady suggests one 

of two courses of action. Take said appetizer 

and put it in the fridge, telling her it will be 

lovely for dinner tomorrow. Or replace it with 

the portion you think is appropriate. That 

should put an exclamation point on the issue. 

Meanwhile, take the edge off by focusing on 

the cocktails. Go to Kaleidoscope and pick up 

a copy of “Tequila Mockingbird,” a recipe book 

of classic cocktails which will make everyone 

forget about apps and focus on dinner. 

Dear Answer Lady 

My mother-in-law died recently after a 

long illness. Her will stipulated that her estate 

be divided equally among the three children. 

Here’s my dilemma. My wife eyeballed a 

certain piece of jewelry among the costume 

jewelry that was the real deal and did not 

share that with her brother and sister. It was 

an expensive piece and has been assessed for a 

few thousand dollars. I feel terrible about this. 

She claims any of them could have taken the 

necklace and they chose not to. Clearly, they 

did not know its worth. Do you think I should 

out her? – Feeling Guilty 

Dear Feeling, 

Sure, definitely “out” her and then go see 

a divorce lawyer. This is between your wife 

and her siblings. However, it certainly tells a 

lot about the woman you married and that is a 

whole other matter, which only you can decide.

shelter when her owner was no longer able to 

care for her. She is transitioning well and loves 

human attention. Annabelle is social and very 

dog friendly with a slow introduction. She is 

quickly learning proper behavior cues and 

is very responsive to her training. She would 

make a great addition to any family. 

ONYX is a lively Patterdale terrier who is 

always on the move. He is a friendly little guy 

who loves to be with people. Onyx enjoys a 

brisk walk as well as playing in the yard. He 

came to the shelter because he didn’t get along 

with other dogs and gets very nervous with 

loud noises. He would do well as the only pet 

in a quiet household. 

NUGGET is a social, one-year-old boy who 

came to the shelter as a stray. He is a bit shy at 

first, but sweet and eager to please. Nugget is 

learning to play with toys and has wonderful 

leash skills. He gets a bit nervous around cats, 

so a slow introduction would be beneficial. 

Nugget would be a wonderful family companion 

and great with other dogs and children.

PAPRIKA is a survivor of a hoarder house 

who was then abandoned outside to fend for 

herself. She is a tough girl, but very affectionate 

when you meet her. Paprika is a little over 

a year old and ready for a home that will give 

her the love and care she deserves. She would 

do well in a home with other cats, dogs and 

children. 

BAXTER is a 16-year-old boy who has sadly 

found himself at the shelter. After months of 

TLC, he’s ready for a home. He tested positive 

for FIV, but it hasn’t affected him. Baxter is in 

need of a warm and loving home to enjoy the 

rest of his life. He is up to date on all vaccinations 

and neutered. Nugget would be good in a 

home with other cats and children. 

FIONA is s an eight-year-old lady who is 

quiet, sweet and playful. She is unfortunately 

one of 36 cats pulled from a hoarder house 

after a fire. Many of the cats suffered health 

complications due to years of neglect and lack 

of cleanliness. Fiona is deaf, but her overall 

health is good. She would do well in a home 

with other cats, dogs and children.
