About The Artist
Helen Scalway trained as a sculptor at Kingston University and Chelsea College of
Art. She taught in various schools and colleges before becoming an artist in
residence in the drawing Studio at Wimbledon College of Art and in the Geography
Departments of Royal Holloway, London University and of Exeter University. She
has also worked with the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. She has shown in
many exhibitions in the UK and internationally, including the Royal Academy
Summer Exhibition.
She long ago realised that drawing was always her first love. She always found it
fascinating how people see, and what they manage to depict in their drawings.
According to Helen….
Helen Hitchman Scalway
“I’ve always drawn, ever since I was three and drew with my mum’s lipstick all
over the white tiles in the bathroom, I still remember being entranced by the
sensation of the soft lipstick gliding on to the hard shiny tiles and making
wonderful rich marks. I got punished for it, of course, but I kept drawing
compulsively, though not on the bathroom tiles anymore”.
In Helen’s words “Drawing has always been my main means of expression as it is
so good for thinking with, for remembering and imagining. I have loved teaching
it and doing it!”
If You Were a House, What House Would You Be?
Helen’s question is can we think about the self in spatial terms,
whereby the house or dwelling becomes a rich metaphor for
identity? Helen’s house images and models are intended as a form
of portraiture. The works are intended to be layered, objects and
metaphor together.
